OUR TRANSGENDER COMMUNITY, by Thomi Clinton TRANSGENDER L.A.T.E. FESTIVAL Coinciding with National Coming Out Day, TDOR Palm Springs will have a historical moment in Coachella Valley and possibly Riverside County. From Oct. 10th to 12th, there will be a festival called the Transgender L.A.T.E. Festival at the Tolerance Education Center in Rancho Mirage. At this event there will be a wide variety of Transgender Movies, Local Transgender Singers and Musicians, and local Transgender Artists. After each evenings presentation there will be a Q & A from Allison Lenore Annalora and others. Allison is dear friends with those in the Screaming Queens documentary whom have shared their life with her about that pivotal time in our history for California human rights. To my knowledge and Google’s knowledge, nothing like this has occurred in the Valley. The importance and relevance to support this will allow future events like this to occur. Maria Roman’s “Remember Me In Red” will be shown again for those that missed the event and for those that did not attend that event we sold out. “Screaming Queens” is a wonderful documentary with original black and white footage about the first Transgender Rights riot that occurred in San Francisco. People thought Stonewall 24

was the first but it wasn’t. This is a must for everyone. “Just Call Me Kade” allows people to understand the need for acceptance of Transgender kids. “I’m Not Les” allows us to see one person finally coming out as Transgender and that small towns ability to be accepting. “Self-Made Man” is a must if you want to know how a female transitions and becomes male. The documentary called “The Believers” is a must for anyone that sings in groups and choirs. The believers are about the first Transgender Gospel Choir in the world. The funds that we raise from this festival are applied towards the statue project for the Valley. This TDOR vigil statue, again, is the first known in the world. For those that are not familiar with any of this please take a moment and learn more at: www.TDORPalmSprings.com. Facebook: Thomi Clinton.

FROM THE DESK OF THE PUBLISHER by Will Paige 2014 Election information. SAFE AT HOME Domestic violence, stalking, and sexual assault cross ethnic, racial, age, gender, religious, national origin, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic lines to affect millions of Americans each year. Fortunately, there is Safe at Home, an address confidentiality program administered by the California Secretary of State’s office that offers victims anonymity and a new start towards a brighter future free from fear. Safe at Home participants can use a free P.O. Box instead of their home address to help them maintain their privacy when receiving first-class mail, opening a bank account, completing a confidential name change, filling out government documents, registering to vote, getting a driver’s license, enrolling a child in school, and more. Register to Vote http://www.sos.ca.gov/ elections/elections_vr.htm Election Date November 4, 2014 Your registration must be postmarked or submitted electronically no later than October 20, 2014. Register online or at the Equality California booth during StreetFest in front of LULU bistro. California’s 36th Congressional District has been designated a battleground by

ballotpedia. The district has very close to even numbers of Democratic and Republican voters. The district was won by President Barack Obama by 3.2% in 2012 and 3% in 2008. Additionally, incumbent Raul Ruiz is a freshman representative. Ruiz will face state representative Brian Nestande (R) in the general election on November 4, 2014. Summary of Ballot measures, please note that this data, while accurate at the time, was written in no way to attempt to provide an indication of how to vote, and has not been curated. Each voter is urged to read and research each item. In fact, I should not have even printed it, but we at the DDG think our voters are the smartest. Our top comedy writers added the last line. Proposition 1 Water Quality, Supply, and Infrastructure Improvement Act of 2014. Authorize $7.12 billion in general obligation bonds for state water supply infrastructure projects, such as public water system improvements, surface and groundwater storage, drinking water protection, water recycling and advanced water treatment technology, water supply management and conveyance, wastewater treatment, drought relief, emergency water supplies, and ecosystem and watershed protection and restoration. Wait, do we have an issue with our water? Continued on page 38

Continued from page 25 Proposition 2 State Budget. Budget Stabilization Account. Legislative Constitutional Amendment. Establishes a strong rainy day fund in the state constitution that will force the legislature and the governor to save money when times are good, and pay down debts and protect schools from devastating cuts. Both Democrats and Republicans support Proposition 2. Republicans and Democrats married to a single idea, that fact is scary! California Proposition 45, the Public Notice Required for Insurance Company Rates Initiative. The measure, if passed, would have public notification before rates changed, as well as review by judges, but 38

large group health plans offered through employers would be exempt. Let’s hope it’s not run by the PUC! Proposition 46 Drug and Alcohol Testing of Doctors. Medical Negligence Lawsuits. Initiative Statute. This one is very tricky. According to some, Proposition 46 would impose the insulting requirement of random testing on all doctors who have hospital privileges, and require that the Medical Board of California discipline any doctors whose tests are dirty. NOT US! As if random drug testing is ok if you’re a working stiff or an airline pilot, but a drunken doctor…never! Proposition 47 Criminal Sentences. Misdemeanor Penalties. Initiative Statute. It would reduce some property and drug-possession crimes from felonies to misdemeanors, unless the defendants had prior convictions for serious crimes such as rape, child molestation or murder. This really is a drug war white flag and not soft on crime. Too many people are classified as felons because we thought that would stem the tide of drug use. Let’s be real: don’t send kids to jail for pot possession with a GED and not expect them to earn a bachelor’s degree in criminology. Proposition 48 Indian Gaming Compacts. Referendum. Designed to overturn two tribal gaming compacts passed by the Legislature and signed by Brown. MEH…

WEEKLY GUIDE TO THE STARS ARIES (March 20 - April 18): It’s never easy when someone you look up to disappoints, but it’s only human to have feet of clay. We’d be pretty boring without them. TAURUS (April 19 - May 19): What you have to offer doesn’t meet demands. So do you cop to it or bluff? Sometimes you need a little finesse, but today you’re going to need a lot. GEMINI (May 20 - June 19): The person challenging you may huff and puff, but he won’t be able to blow your house down because your foundation is solid. Hang tough and you’ll prevail. CANCER (June 20 - July 21): Avoid arguments today because people’s wordplay is better than yours and you’ll only get flustered. LEO (July 22 - Aug. 21): Try not to look

bored when sitting through the long life lecture. It will only make this pedantic type stop and start again from the beginning. VIRGO (Aug. 22 - Sept. 21): Are you speaking to people’s higher or lower nature? Lamenting the state of affairs is easy. Doing something constructive about it is the true creative challenge. LIBRA (Sept. 22 - Oct. 21): There’s no talking reason to a relative. It’s not your job to get him to face facts. Life will do that soon enough. SCORPIO (Oct. 22 - Nov. 20): You’re getting too fixated on others’ successes. Don’t you recognize window-dressing when you see it? Be proud of your own gains. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 21- Dec. 20): Fear of making the wrong move could

PSYCHOLOGICALLY SPEAKING by Mark Jeremy Trybulski Dear PS: I have trouble with social interaction; approaching people, starting conversations and carrying conversations in social situations are difficult for me. It seems to me that the normal person knows how to carry on polite conversation. They understand how to ask relevant questions and convey interest and attention; they know how to carry on a conversation and contribute in a way that doesn’t overpower the flow. And then there’s me! I have no trouble interacting at work or in school situations, and I have no problem talking about me or contributing stories about myself and my experiences; it is when we go over and above that introductory level that my skills seem to be sorely lacking. I have two gay friends who are married and

44

they seem to be very well-liked by the people around them. They aren’t, for the most part, individuals who go out seeking or relying on attention to be happy. However, they seem to have no problem in social situations and people actually seek them out. When I compare myself to either of them I feel dull and boring. I feel like they have qualities I lack and would like to have. I am just wondering how to improve myself in social situations. Signed: Dull and Boring. Dear Dull and Boring: Before I went to school to get my degrees I thought I was stupid. My partner, well ex-partner, is a very intelligent man; my best friend is Mensa. When the three of us would get together I could carry myself

Continued from page 44

in a conversation just so far; and then I felt lost andstupid. I actually went to school to get my AA to prove that I was not stupid. What I found out was that I'm not stupid; rather, I just was not exposed to nearly as many resources as they. Once I started taking classes and building up my knowledge base and becoming more secure in what I knew, I was able to converse with individuals easier. Fast-forward about 10 years. I have my degrees, my state licensure and my own practice. I just returned from a visit with my Mensa best friend, and one of the things that I was so proud of, and she could not understand why, was that I was able to have a very deep conversation and hold my own with her. When she and I discussed it, I realized that I was the one who is limiting myself by thinking I was stupid and was not able to converse in meaningful ways with her and others. She cared for me for who I was and what I knew; I was disliking myself for what I did not know instead of accepting myself for who I was. What I finally came to realize is I do not need to know everything. I have my areas of expertise, and fortunately for me, many people I encounter are fascinated by the fact that I'm a psychotherapist; and so I have no problem discussing related things with them. In addition, as I say to people, I embrace my "retardedness". I have noticed that there are people who choose to resent me because they are jealous of my ability to make new friends easily. However, what they are not seeing is that when they sit on the sidelines with a seemingly superior attitude and wait for people to come to them, they are sadly disappointed and take out their frustrations on other people needlessly. To be honest, I believe these individuals are insecure, themselves. What does all this mean to you? I think you are going into conversations or socialization expe-

riences mentally concerned that you will not be able to effectively communicate and "be liked". You may even feel like you won't be accepted for who you are; once you fully accept who you are, things can begin to change. The way I see it, the thing that both of your friends have in common is that they both accept themselves for who they are and actually like themselves! Self-assuredness is a trait that is very attractive. I just am myself in social situations and I don't care what other people think about me most often. One thing you might try doing is discovering some of your interests and exploring, through books or movies, a bit more about them. You never know in social situations what someone is going to be interested in; you just go with the flow of the conversation and wait for the appropriate time for you to interject your knowledge. Never feel trapped in a conversational dynamic; you will feel held-hostage and negative thoughts will form. I have learned that most people do not, or cannot, tolerate "dead air" in a conversation. As a psychotherapist, I have been trained to deal with it very effectively. In session, I just let there be silence until the client decides to speak. I do not feel the need to interject dialogue in such moments. In a social conversation, if there's dead air and I can tell that people are feeling uncomfortable because of it, I just talk about myself. LOL Mark Jeremy Trybulski is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the State of California (MFC53284). He has a private practice in Palm Springs, in addition to conducting Internet therapy that reaches nationwide.

JERSEY’S JOURNAL by Jersey Shore Halloween is fast approaching. Actually, it will be here and gone before you know it, even thought the stores started displaying Halloween in May. It comes and goes quickly, like tricks in a hooker’s motel room on a Saturday night. It’s one of those holidays that, whether you are a kid or an adult, it’s always fun to celebrate. Like tricks, there are treats. Candy as a kid and man candy as an adult. As adults the costumes seem to get shorter and more non existent, which isn’t a bad thing. It’s the one holiday where any costume or character turns into “slutty”. Slutty Nurse, Slutty Nun, Slutty Smurf, Slutty Pumpkin, you name it, we will make it slutty!

In my closet for many years has been a new, never worn Fred Flintstone costume. A light weight long tunic and wig. Period. Now that is a unencumbered-some costume. It sure beats the ball crusher. I’ve never had the opportunity to wear it. With all that said and done, no matter what I wear, Halloween is about fun. It’s that feeling in the air that just screams, enjoy at any age! So, see you out on Arenas in your near naked costumes. Enjoy it because you won’t get another excuse to be nearly naked in public until Pride…one week later! Peace, Love, and Halloween,

I always seem to be working every Halloween, which I don’t mind. If a pay gig approaches, then I must accept the Universe’s gift. Plus, Boy Jersey as a Slutty anything is not requested often or at all. Lucky me gets to wear three pairs of dance tights, holding down hip pads, ass pads, my huge manhood (play along) followed by full body under garments, waist cincher, and a body suit. I am so hairy I could be a gorilla, sans any costume. To top it all off, shoes, gloves, costumes, and wigs!!! Perform and change. Repeat 4 more times!!! And how can I forget Makeup!!!!!! Even my eyebrows get covered. Drag is a very interesting concept.

THE LAST WORD by George W. Zander Thank you Will Paige, and the Desert Daily Guide, for sponsoring an excellent Cathedral City candidates’ forum. The forum was moderated by Melina and yours truly. CCBC was a great venue. Thanks to Richard for sponsoring the event at his resort. The attendance was about 150, way higher than any in the past where we were limited in space. All but two of the candidates attended. There were questions from the citizens of Cathedral City. The questions were mostly asked to all the candidates and were not known in advance. The tone was professional and not combative, which is always welcome in politics. There were questions on various important issues in the city including several on the LGBT community. The budget, hiring practices for police and fire and creating business opportunities were all addressed.

Several VIPs attended, including Greg Pettis, Bud England, Paul Marchand, Chuck Vasquez and former mayor George Stetler. Now - the important part. Be sure you are registered to vote and remember to vote AND tell your friends, co-workers, family and folks you meet out having fun…ask them…are you registered to vote?
