OUR TRANSGENDER COMMUNITY, by Thomi Clinton Organic Brain vs. Bio Chemistry Woody Allen once said being bisexual gives one a 50% better chance of getting laid any given night. Differences remain personal expressions by creating a version of the “norm” that matches the way we feel. Sex, gender and sexual orientation are actually three very different norms for Transgender people. Sex is, generally, doctor assigned based on your genitalia at birth. According to the American Psychological Association, it refers to a person’s biological status and is typically categorized only as male, female, or intersex. Gender refers to the attitudes, feelings, and behaviors that a given cul22

ture associates with a person’s biological sex. Sexual orientation refers to the sex of those to whom one is sexually and romantically attracted. While these categories continue to be widely used, research has suggested that sexual orientation, in reality, does not exist in such definable categories, and instead occurs on a continuum. As we begin to think about a world not tied to a binary “Gay and Lesbian” or “Male and Female,” we can become more inclusive and reduce this form of Heteronormative discrimination.

FROM THE DESK OF THE PUBLISHER by Will Paige Well, this week was a great surprise, meeting Cake Moss at CCBC this weekend and going to court for a seatbelt ticket, which I intend to fight while enjoying the beginning of the endless summer that is about to hit Palm Springs. Everyone smells of clean pool water and coconut oil. The hot men are running around shirtless, and everyone seems happy in our desert cities again. October is getting closer and we have Halloween and the zombie walk to get ready for, along with pool parties, Prides, men living with men, women living with women, all together is paradise. As usual, CCBC books the hottest talent, from Jersey Shore, Brian Damson, Raquela, and now add Cake Moss to that mix! Not a newcomer to LA, but fairly new to the desert, I am sure we will be seeing much more from her, as rumor has it she has a few more gigs booked at CCBC. Cathedral City voters, we a have set up an LGBT candidates forum at CCBC on Sept 29, so we all can get to meet the new and incumbent candidates. The LGBT Candidates’ Forum is for all candidates for Cathedral City Mayor and City Council on Monday, September

29th at 6:00 PM, and is sponsored by the DDG and hosted at the CCBC Resort. In summary, this will be conducted in a format that allows all candidates two minutes to introduce themselves, followed by a question and answer session with questions taken from the audience, with answers limited to one minute. All questions will be screened, and inappropriate and distasteful questions will be removed. Candidates will then have one minute for a closing statement. The actual forum will be run by George Zander and Melinda Tremaglio. As for the court system, I can’t say I am impressed with the new changes, and have already complained to the people on the third floor so I am sure they will address the system in my favor quickly. I even offered to buy a library or some wing with my name on it, but they said no. How can that be, I thought? Surely it appears that justice today is only a few dollars away. I mean, really, now I have to pay them bail money to order a trial for a seat belt ticket? Bail is supposed to be some form of property deposited or pledged to a court to persuade it to release a suspect from jail. I actually went to court to Continued on page 38

PSYCHOLOGICALLY SPEAKING by Mark Jeremy Trybulski Dear PS: I have anxiety that is deeply affecting my life and my relationship. I am the “passive aggressive nice guy”. Under stress I get anxious, overwhelmed and indecisive easily. I tend to get stupid and over react. I am in a rut where my partner gets angry at me because he thinks I am going to forget something important or do something stupid, and I feel fearful and embarrassed most of the time. I know he cares about me and is trying to help me in his own way, but I beat myself up a lot. I feel like I am spiraling in a bad direction. How can I manage imperfect situations and feel like I am taking steps in a positive direction? Signed: Out of Control Dear Out of Control: Most people act “stupid and reactive” under stress. It is human nature. However, I believe you have crafted an image of yourself that this is the way you are and so that is the way you act. The brain is like a sponge. It only does what we tell it to do. If we perpetuate negative self-talk about ourselves, the brain listens and learns and reacts accordingly. Eventually you are running on auto pilot mode and the auto pilot is running YOU, when you should be running yourself. Habits, or in psychobabble schema, are developed like this. Habits are made, be they mental or physical, and habits can be undone. It sounds like you may be worrying a bit about things that could happen down the line. How about if we just agree that things will happen. However, what is important to keep in mind are the successes of the day. Successes are not just the typical definition thereof, but also the realization that we all can make mistakes, recognize them and continue to move forward from the knowledge. It should be all about how you handle things in the moment and not so much energy spent on what could/will occur around the corner. By reinforcing the moment successes in your mind, you are training your brain to learn and remember these positive coping strategies that will, eventually, be second nature to you for future events. If you also focus, in a semi doubtful way, of how you may handle future things, you are sending your brain mixed messages. The main message you want it to learn is that you can and will handle anything that comes your way - without doubt! Mark Jeremy Trybulski is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the State of California (MFC53284). He has a private practice in Palm Springs, in addition to conducting internet therapy that reaches nationwide.

JERSEY’S JOURNAL by Jersey Shore I have so much “catching up” in life to do. The past decade or so are kind of a blur. A lot has happened to me at that time like death, near death, major surgeries, minor surgeries, etc., etc. All life events like you have, but sprinkle on Anxiety and Depression and being poorly medicated. I know I am not alone. That depression has negative connotation and some people think that depression is just being a lazy ass and not getting off the couch. Well, I will tell you this my friend, I admit to being a lazy ass, but when you feel like a human magnet and your bed is the refrigerator. I write this with a good sense of humorous. I always forget and suddenly, realize that my brain works a little different than most. It’s like a computer, all different brands and sometimes it runs well, but this model has been used frequently and had been dropped a few too many times, The memory is Completely gone. It holds very little information, then it just disappears. You might find a strange file somewhere as certain information is retained. Now add “medical marijuana” to the list of “programs””. The computer needed that the application or it might have died, but at the same time. What was I talking about? I like Vanilla Ice Cream. With maybe a swirl of chocolate, but not too much or all the time. I really don’t have a sweet tooth. Oops, I wasn’t talking about ice cream. Do I need to restart this thing. Yes, sometimes you do.

Hold on. And after all that, I never made the whole point of this article. What kind of “Medication” did I buy from CAPS? It is good!!!! Oh my point in this article, FINALLY, I’m not alone, other people have been where I am or way worse because mental illness plays a huge part in many peoples lives at all levels. Most people have it and some don’t and in MY opinion is that it is very capable to live a productive life and if diagnosed correctly and with the right kind of medication. There are MANY people being treated improperly with depression and by not living healthy you miss so much in life and feel guilty every day that all that time was wasted. So, an expert has come in and now we are slowly and gradually going to make the computer run so it can function and sorta “Catch up” on lost data. It won’t run perfectly. But who or what does? THE LAST WORD by George W. Zander The history-making coalition that delivered the presidency to Barack Obama in 2008 and reelected him in 2012 has a distinct attitude toward the 2014 election: They really are not concerned.

ley Kaplan for Cathedral City City Council, and Marge Doyle for the Hi Desert Hospital Board. Check out these folks on their Facebook pages and remember them when you go to vote.

A new poll finds that just 68 percent of African Americans, Latinos, young people and unmarried women who voted in 2012 and are “likely” to vote in 2014 -- the four key parts of Obama’s coalition -- say they are “almost certain” to vote in the upcoming midterm elections. That’s up four points from April, when 64 percent said the same. But it’s still lagging far behind other voting groups.

Also, for those who are in Cathedral City, attend the Candidates forum on September 29, sponsored by the Desert Daily Guide, where you can meet and greet all the candidates.

Locally here in our Desert this is a huge number, as most of these folks voted for Dr. Raul Ruiz for Congress and will vote for other Democrats such as Karalee Hargrove and Eduardo Garcia for the State Assembly, and great local candidates such as James Williamson for the Palm Springs School Board, Shel-
