ADAMSARTEXPOSE’Douglas Simonson and the Male Form Can a boy from the remote cattle country of western Nebraska become one of the foremost artists of the male figure? Douglas Simonson has done just that. He is recognized as one of the world’s most recognized artists of the male physique. Born on a ranch in western Nebraska, Douglas Simonson knew from and early age that he wanted to be an artist. His mother, who was also an artist, supported his aspiration. At the age of 19 he moved to Hawaii to work on achieving his dream. In Hawaii, he studied art formally at the University of Hawaii and the Honolulu Institute of Art. The majority of his talent was by his own determination and self study from which he developed his own style and originality. As many contemporary artists have done, Simonson worked at a variety of careers, with varied experiences, to help him continue his work in art. In 1981, with the help of two close friends, he wrote, illustrated and published a book titled “Pidgin to da Max.” This became one of the best selling books in Hawaii. He has since completed 14 books featuring his art, published in five languages.
flyers. With the advent of technology during the past two decades, the web has become his primary gallery. Here he has shown thousands of his works of the nude male. Other products, in addition to his drawings, paintings, and prints, have evolved, including limited edition prints, calendars, e-books, cards, and photography. He also has a blog titled Simonson’s Artist’s Blog. This provides ongoing insight into his new works, his process of creating, and gives a personal touch to his art for his many fans. His figures evoke an emotional overtone, exposing the male body as physically beautiful and natural, in a variety of environments. He works in pencil, ink, acrylic and photography. He also paints landscapes and other environments where he works with his models. His style includes representational realism, caricatures, abstracts, and photographs. He recently moved from Hawaii to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. He maintains a studio and office in Lincoln, Nebraska. He can be contacted directly by U.S. Mail at Douglas Simonson, PO Box 22278, Lincoln, NE 68542 or at douglas@douglassimonson.com or by phone at (308) 221-1360.
After his success with “Pidgin to da Max,” Simonson delved into his repressed fascination working with the male figure. His insecurities about A drawing of his work is reproduced in this article creating art that featured the nude male were put depicting his representational work with the male aside in the early 1980’s when he began focusing figure. on this as his primary subject matter. His early concerns regarding a concentration on the male figure began to fade as he realized that this is what he had been meant to do. The new energy and enthusiasm from his work began to pay off as he produced drawings, paintings, and prints from his inspiration of the models he worked with. Today, Douglas Simonson has gained the wide recognition he deserves as one of the foremost artists of the male figure. He has shared his work initially with hundreds of thousands of fans, from which he gained a global following through displaying his24 work inYour mailings of colored printed weekly LGBTslides Gay and Desert Guide. THIS WEEK With Will So much is going on this week, as the DDG launched a new set of products and services including an all-new web site and mobile app. See page 50 There’s a new Pride in town, and it’s called LGBT Days. Cathedral City is bursting with Pride. See schedule below or page 7 for poster. We are grateful of the support our straight businesses have given this event as well. It shows they have trust in the Gay Community, our people, our leaders and our future. This admits that many parts of the nation are still at conflict with gay rights; we continue to prove our point that we simply want equality. This is the main reason for the Desert Daily Guide itself. While others spend the days playing politics, we list everything we can each week without regard to who is advertising with us or not. For us, our advertiser pays for this service, and we will never turn anyone away from at least some level of promotion. So you can thank our advertisers by patronizing their business.
to support our Gay community, then we should show our appreciation as well. This is one way to make sure our local community holds together in both the good times and the bad. Those of you that remember, every year I ask everyone to visit the many Pride booths and this year is no different. What is different is this year we are helping to build up the LGBT community in Cathedral City, and there is a lot in motion now. I am sure we can use all the help we can get building up community, not just in the big cities, but more importantly in the underserved communities. The DDG has, at its heart, catered to the local community, but we are also looking to expand that to all underserviced sectors of the LGBT community. We now even include the weekly schedule of the Desert Center for Sexuality Awareness in Palm Desert. Please join us for LGBT Days this weekend.
In this, the DDG promises to never forget April 3rd about the small local gay business, local Friday Night: bars, and restaurants or retail store. Remember, even Harvey Milk started from a Opening Night Kickoff, 6 pm to 8 pm, small camera shop, so a gay bar, restaurant Festival Lawn, Downtown Cathedral City and store keeps our community healthy hosted by Bonta Restaurant (Palm Springs and vibrant. As you enjoy the festivities, Gay Men’s Chorus, Simeon Den’s Dance please stop by Digs or Barracks or another Group, and Equality Hot Air Balloon local bar and have a drink, and get to know Rides) Visit us at desertdailyguide.com continued on page 25 31 them. Veterans Notes
Vet could lower health care costs for nearly 190,000 low-income and non-service connected veterans in the next five years, according to VA. Net worth no longer included in elibility! If you have been turned away, the Veterans Affairs Department no longer will include net worth as a factor in determining whether a veteran is eligible for VA health care. Until now, some veterans with illnesses not linked to their service and who are not rated for a service-connected conditions have been allowed to receive care at VA hospitals and clinics if their combined income and net worth were above VA thresholds, as long as they were willing to make copayments for that care. LE
LEATHER REALM by Dave Murdock Merriam-Webster’s Online defines symbology as “the art of expression by symbols” Now, stop and think for a moment how many symbols we see everyday. We all recognize that the cross is a symbol for the Red Cross or a hospital or medical facility, the peace sign is the symbol for peace, and if a frilly flamingo-clad Martini glass doesn’t mean you’ve found a gay bar I don’t know what does…. Symbols tell a non-verbal tale that you recognize instantly, and the Leather crowd took to symbols with a passion rivaling that of Imelda Marcos for her shoes. Big Brother was watching, and it got tedious to have to explain over and over in the bar that you were a Top into water sports. So a system of symbols was born. First of all, and probably most importantly, it is almost universal that carrying keys, hankies, and the wearing of things like wristbands, etc. on the left means that you’re “flagging” that you’re a dominant/top. Wearing those same items on the right means that you are submissive/bottom. For a while it was VERY confusing because one coast had it reversed, making for some very interesting first dates. It seems as though the entire nation has settled on the left being Dominant and the right being Passive interpretation
now. Past that, the most widely know symbol in the Leather community is the “hanky code”. The most common ones are: Black = Heavy S&M, Grey = Bondage, White = Jerk-off, Light Blue = Oral Sex, Dark Blue = Anal sex, Red = Fisting, Yellow = Water sports, Hunter Green = Daddy/Boy. Much of the hanky code has fallen by the wayside with the introduction of the Internet, but you still see it out there. I also think that after a while it became very difficult in a dark bar to figure out exactly WHAT that hanky color was. Is it yellow for watersports, orange for anything goes, or gold for three-ways? Let’s not mix those up, shall we? But let’s delve deeper. If you see someone wearing what’s known as a Muir Cap (it looks like a policeman’s cap made of leather) you can assume they are a dominant or a Master, and wearing a leather baseball style cap usually means that they are a boy or a submissive. Someone in a harness, either chain or leather that just encompasses their upper torso, is probably a dominant, but if they have another piece of harness running from the sternum into their nether regions you can usually assume they’re a bottom. If you see someone in a collar being led Continued on page 48

CABANA BOY NOTES: Party VACAAAAA!
Summer is almost here, boys, and the cabana boys want you to start right here. But if you must vacation, then you just must. New York: A 30-mile-long barrier island to the south of Long Island, New York’s Fire Island is full of gay New Yorkers honking and spraying each other with salty sea-water. What were you thinking? Nudity allowed in restricted areas. San Diego: Black’s Beach, the most famous nude beach in America and it’s on again off again but this time it’s on, so that means it’s on and the clothes are off again. Ogunquit, ME: Ogunquit Beach. When the warm weather hits, gays from the Canadian border descend on this quaint New England beach. Gay bars, shopping, and candles. CAUTION: Canadian men like to pee outside, so it might not be an invitation. Besides, it’s polite to ask before planting your tulips.

around by someone on a leash the person with the collar is a slave and the leash-holder is his Master. If the one wearing the collar is on all fours he’s probably a “puppy” with his pup trainer. And the final important piece to pay attention to is a “collar.” This is traditionally a chain worn around the neck and closed by a locked padlock, indicating that the person wearing the collar is an “owned” property. Now why is all this important? Well, first of all it will give you a more or less instant “read” on what someone is interested in. And in most cases, if you remember all this, it could save you from an embarrassing faux-pas. But most importantly, remember that apparel is a symbol. Don’t go into a leather bar wearing a collar and wonder why no

one is talking to you. It’s not a fashion accoutrement; it means that you belong to someone, and others should not approach without that person’s permission. Oh, by the way, don’t go into a Leather bar wearing the entire contents of the cologne bottle, either. It just screams “TOURIST” and will only earn you dirty looks and a lot of sneezes. And, before I forget to mention it again, in upcoming issues of DDG I’ll also be answering any questions about the Leather Scene that you may have, so if you have a question, comment, witticism or criticism please feel free to email me at LeatherRealm@gmail.com. I can’t promise an answer to every question, but I’ll do my best.

WEEKLY GUIDE TO THE STARS ARIES: March 21 - April 20 There are benefits of maintaining decorum. Let everyone retreat to their separate corners. TAURUS: April 21 - May 19 You can never tell what new surprise a loved one will spring on you. Hopefully it’s pleasant, as you’ve had enough of the other kind. GEMINI: May 20 - June 21 It’s hard to revisit game plans in midstream, but the terms that you agreed to weeks ago no longer apply. CANCER: June 22 - July 22 A debt that you’ve been dreading finally rears its ugly head. But don’t cower. It’s not as unmanageable as you initially feared.
LEO: July 23 - August 22 Time ushers in a different kind of friendship. Or at least puts a new twist on an old one. It’s not something that you will soon forget. VIRGO: August 23 - Sept. 22 You’ll soon have cause to celebrate not getting what you want when you learn that you narrowly escaped a debacle in the making. LIBRA: Sept. 23 - October 22 Is a certain someone really in a position to open doors? Or is this person just leading you on? Don’t waste time speculating. Ask. SCORPIO: October 23 - Nov. 21 Count to ten before answering people’s requests. You’ve been bombarded with a lot of demands lately and it’s beginning to show.
SAGITTARIUS: Nov. 22 - Dec. 20 Fine-tuning is OK but don’t go overboard. You could hobble progress by getting too fixated on trivialities. CAPRICORN: Dec. 21 - Jan. 19 Respond immediately to any communication that you receive by net or post. AQUARIUS: Jan 20 - Feb. 18 Though pushed to the breaking point, you’ll continue with a certain relationship. You’ve been through too much to call it quits. PISCES: Feb 19 - March 20 Don’t lean too heavily because friends can only shoulder so much emotional weight now. Try to be more upbeat for their sake, and yours as well.

JERSEY’S JOURNAL by Jersey Shore Fame. It does crazy things to crazy people. These days, with all the crap-ortunities to become famous for 15 minutes, the sale of souls is through the roof! The ability to bad mouth someone regardless of whether it’s true or not is as easy as taking a shit (after 6 cups of coffee), but the ones who believe it are just as bad. My motto, for a reason, is unless you hear it come out of my mouth, then it’s not accurate. It just amazes me that people believe what they are told. Just because it is said doesn’t mean it’s true, and these days, people will stab their mother for a chance to get ahead. So if I were to ask if you have a conscience, you would say yes, only because you are very delusional. I came from Hollywood. I know how it works. I just have to sit back and watch you fall. It’s a huge shame you must destroy others along the way. I think that is what bothers me the most. If you have this plan of stardom and fame, well, don’t involve me by dragging me down so you look good. And shame on the people who are foolish enough to go along with the ride. Your self credibility is pretty much tarnished.
FAME
rob you, who will just be rude verbally. I miss the times that were a tad bit simpler. With all the Social media and how people have become famous for no apparent reason because of social media, it’s become a look-at-me world. I will act like an idiot and eat bugs for fame which is fleeing and will not last long, but I have to be like everyone else. No one is an individual these days. Let’s just jump on the bus of clones, all fighting for the same destination. I, for one, will drive my dirty ass Element AKA Drag Mobile to wherever makes me happy. I would rather be a happy and true person than someone who wants something that will not be what you thought it was. It always never is. Step outside the box and look in, then you will see the truth. The truth will set you free. Peace, Love, Snap out of it! Jersey

THE LAST WORD by George W. Zander Allies from sports stars to conserva- Supporters of the law, which pretive state Governors to regular old LGBTQI support have rallied around us like never before! It feels great to receive that screaming support from everyone. Sunday, Mike Pence, the Republican governor of Indiana, tried to jump away himself from his law of intolerance and divisiveness, into which he had put himself and his state. After coming under huge criticism from around the country, he said that he would now support legislation to “clarify” that the state’s new Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which he signed into law last week, would not discriminate against gays and lesbians. His interview with George Stephanopoulos on Sunday was impossible to follow. He ducked and weaved like he was playing in the NCAA basketball tournament. Memories of Condi Rice, a past criminal who worked in the Bush administration who could never answer a question with a no or a yes.
vents the state from “substantially burdening a person’s exercise of religion,” say it protects the rights of people and business owners from compromising their religious beliefs; opponents say it opens the door to discrimination. Similar laws in 17 other states are not going to be passed or get a signature from a Governor. His political life has been built around the Bible and is use everywhere - schools, government offices and businesses. Now he is on center stage and 2015’s biggest bigot! Congrats, Governor Pence.... you are now well known. And you wanted to be President? That isn’t going to happen!
