The Anatomy of a DUI An Overview of Alcohol By Manuel J. Barba, DUI Defense Attorney In my last article I provided a brief overview of how alcohol is absorbed into the body. This article will focus on how the consumed alcohol distributes throughout the body. Distribution Once the alcohol moves from the stomach into the small intestine, it will absorb into the blood. Thereafter the alcohol is distributed throughout the body by the blood. Alcohol has an affinity for water. The blood will carry the alcohol to the various tissues and organs of the body, and will deposit the alcohol in them in proportion to their water contents. Brain tissue has a fairly high water content, so the brain receives a substantial share of the distributed alcohol. Muscle tissue also has a reasonably high water content and thus also gets alcohol. Fat tissue however contains very little water; thus very little alcohol will be deposited in the drinker’s body fat. This is one factor that differentiates alcohol from certain other drugs, notably PCP and THC, which are very soluble in fat.

en and men. Pound for pound, the typical female’s body contains a good deal less water than does the typical man’s. This is because women have additional fatty tissue, designed in part to protect a child in the womb. The typical male body is about 68% water, and the typical female body is only about 55%. Thus, when a woman drinks, she has less fluid -- pound for pound -- in which to distribute the alcohol. If a woman and a man who weigh exactly the same drank exactly the same amount of alcohol under the same circumstances, her blood alcohol concentration (BAC) would climb higher than his. When we couple this to the fact that the average woman is smaller than the average man, it becomes apparent that a given amount of alcohol will cause a higher BAC in a woman than it usually will in a man. In the next part of this article, I will discuss how the body eliminates alcohol. Stay tuned… and until then, be safe. DUI Defense Attorney Manuel J. Barba can be reached at 760-770-3377 or 951-6809125. For more information visit www. BarbaLawyer.com.

Alcohol’s affinity for water, and its lack of affinity for fat, helps explain an important difference in the way alcohol affects wom20

LEATHER REALM by Dave Murdock Before Solomon starts to scribe this weeks column I want to remind you that Palm Springs Leather Pride is October 29 – November 1 this year (you can read all about it at desertleatherpride.com). But, before that can happen local bars and organizations have feeder contests that select their contestants that will enter the Mr. Palm Springs Leather Contest. So, be sure to check with your local bar and find out if they’re going to run a contest and if they are, get your applications in now. It may seem early but our first feeder contest to date is Mr. Chill Leather on September 12th and Tool Shed’s contest is the following week, so dust off your leathers and get your applications today! On with the show. By this time I’m sure you’ve all heard the old jokes, “What do you call someone in Palm Springs that advertises as being versatile?”…. BOTTOM!” “What do you call a Top in Palm Springs? Someone who can hold their own legs up.” So why all the Top/bottom references? It’s all a lead in to what I wanted to discuss this week. I’ve covered this before, but I keep getting questions about it so I guess it bears more explanation. Here’s the most confusing thing to most people. In the Leather scene the words Top and bottom don’t necessarily refer to sexual positions. That always seems to be the sticking point in trying to explain Top/ 28

Bottom dynamics. In a scene the Top is the dominating force. He (or she) controls the scene, nominally sets the pace, and administers the sensations. The bottom is the one whose body is receiving the sensations. A top can go my many names like Sir, Daddy, Master, Trainer, etc. and is usually referred generically as a Top or a Dominant or an Alpha. It is perfectly acceptable (although not prevalent for reasons I’ll go into in a moment) for the dominant one in the scene to direct the submissive (or boy or slave or pup) to be the sexual top. However, the Top is still the one controlling the situation. I have no statistics, but it’s my experience that even though this situation can and does happen, most times it doesn’t because a personality that’s dominant enough to control that type of scene, in most cases, is dominant enough to want to play the role sexually too. Confused enough? It’s REALLY simple. The one in control is the TOP, the one being controlled is the bottom. However there are caveats to that statement. Even though we always say that the Top is the one controlling the scene, in reality (except in very specific situations) the bottom is the one who, at least sub rosa, is the one with the final say. He can stop the scene at any time by use of his safe word, even if he is the most submissive slave. But, and this is a big

way. The “A” division has the highest skilled players. The “D” division, nicknamed the “developmental division,” consists of nine teams of players who are building their skills. Anyone 18 and older, at any skill level, is invited to join the league for the upcoming fall season, which begins Oct. 4. Interested new players are advised to participate in one of the league’s fall clinics, which take place on consecutive Sundays in September: Sept. 6 from 4 to 6 p.m. on field 5, Sept. 13 from 8 to 10 am on field 7, and Sept. 20 from 4 to 6 pm on field 5. All clinics take place at Demuth Park in Palm Springs, located on Mesquite Avenue just east of El Cielo Road. The purpose of the clinics is to assess player skills so they can be placed in the appropriate division. All attendees will be placed on a team. Interested people should visit PSGSL.org and sign up. The league embraces diversity and encourages members of the LGBT community to come to Demuth Park on Sundays this fall from 2 to 6 p.m. on fields 5, 6, 7 and 8 to enjoy a fun, exciting, entertaining and family-friendly afternoon of slow-pitch softball. There is a snack bar at fields 7 and 8; bring a chair or a blanket to better enjoy the day. The PSGSL is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization, which accepts donations and team sponsorships to help players offset the costs of playing. For more information, contact the PSGSL visit PSGSL.org. JERSEY’S JOURNAL by Jersey Shore Well, I’ve started rehearsals on a new show, this one is appropriately entitled “Mixed Nuts”. The crazy is in my favor this time. I’m not the only nut in this show, I am mixed with Lili Rose (Walnut) and Fleet Easton (Peanut), who are singers. As you know I am ever so lovely described as “ a lip synching drag queen”. Of course I can do so much more than that, but people like to pigeon hole you into ONE category. I am first to admit that singing is NOT on the top of my list of capabilities, but entertaining is, and you will be entertained.

creative and happy. And with Lili and Fleet I get to do that. We all get to be ourselves. We can be annoying to each other. What, you didn’t know? All people can be annoying, if they are being thier true selves. If they aren’t hurting anyone, then what’s the issue?

Along with my co-stars we will be singing Duo’s and trios and we-ohs!!! Word had gotten out about this show already and we are just starting to book various locations. All before we are done rehearsing!!! It shall be interesting! I’m used to having the freedom of movement because of the ability to lip-sych. It’s shouldn’t be moving your lips and maybe knowing the words, it should be knowing every exact breathe and syllable, every word and the meaning of it, the power of the noise you are making, and don’t be afraid to look ugly!

CCBC Resort & Coming soon to YOU... Mixed Nuts. Contact Jersey at: Dragapalooza@aol.com and on Facebook under Jersey Shore

BUT, it is the Top who has conceives of and executes the scene itself. Even though both of the participants have discussed, at least in general terms usually, what is going to transpire, it’s up to the Top to formulate exactly what will happen and then he has to do all the work to make sure that the scene goes well both physically and psychologically. I think that’s why bottoms outnumber Tops. It’s hard work to be a good Top, and something that takes countless hours of training to perfect all of the skills necessary. So, now you have (hopefully) the definitions of what it means to be a Top or bottom in the Leather Scene. But no amount of verbiage can substitute for experience. So if you want to REALLY find out what the words mean then I suggest you get out there and find out for yourself through exploration. Then and only then can you viscerally understand what being a Top or bottom is all about. If you have any questions about the Leather scene, or would like to see an article about a specific topic or event, please send an email to LeatherRealm@gmail.com.

Detroit Assholes of the week! Around 5am on Saturday, Amber Monroe – a Detroit resident who friends described as an outgoing, charismatic individual who “loved to dance” – was shot and killed as she exited a vehicle near the intersection of 6 Mile and Woodward, according to police. The area, known as Palmer Park, was the location of three separate alleged hate crimes against transgender women in 2014. THAT IS FUNNY Two couples decide to spend the weekend away together at a posh hotel. When they get there, one guy suggests they indulge in partner-swapping as a trial. After 2 hours of solid sex by the fireside, the guy turned to his new partner and said, “Wow! This is the very best sex I’ve had in years! I wonder how the girls are doing?” Three gay men died, and were cremated. Their lovers happened to be at the funeral home at the same time, and were discussing what they planned to do with the ashes. The first man said, ‘’My Benny loved to fly, so I’m going up in a plane to scatter his ashes in the sky.’’ The second man said, ‘’My Carl was a good fisherman, so I’m going to scatter his ashes in our favorite lake.’’ The third man said, ‘’My Jim was such a good lover, I think I’m going to dump his ashes in a pot of chili, so he can tear my ass up just one more time.’’

WEEKLY GUIDE TO THE STARS ARIES: March 21 - April 20 That nasty spring air could bring out infantile tendencies. Don’t let a disagreement lead you to pick up your toys and go home. TAURUS: April 21 - May 19 You may have a verbal agreement in place, but that doesn’t mean you’re spoken for. Tell a potential prospect that you’re still all ears. GEMINI: May 20 - June 21 One moment you’re being summoned forward and the next you’re being shooed away. Evidently a superior’s left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is. CANCER: June 22 - July 22 You’ve been feeling better than usual. This makes you more driven and forceful albeit in your own

46

subtly understated way. LEO: July 23 - August 22 You could rekindle an old spark if you’d only let bygones be bygones.VIRGO: August 23 - Sept. 22 Before discounting what you have to work with, take a closer look. You could be underestimating what the situation offers. LIBRA: Sept. 23 - October 22 Is someone on your side or not? Sometimes it’s the harshest critic who’s the most determined to see you succeed. SCORPIO: October 23 - Nov. 21 Skepticism can be healthy, but not now. You don’t want to ride the brake because it will only hinder progress. SAGITTARIUS: Nov. 22 - Dec. 20

It’s best to say nothing if you can’t tell if people know what’s going on or not. You don’t want to be the one to spill the beans. CAPRICORN: Dec. 21 - Jan. 19 A recent spate of good fortune has put you in a forgiving spirit. Be sure to include yourself because you’ve been way too hard on yourself. AQUARIUS: Jan 20 - Feb. 18 You’d be justified in sidestepping a responsibility but that’s not your style. Even if it’s OK with a boss, you still have to answer your conscience PISCES: Feb 19 - March 20 Your love life should get a hearty boost. This provides you with the impetus needed to act on those romantic longings.

THE LAST WORD by George W. Zander In case you have missed it, there is an amazing little phenomenon occurring in our little city. It is a General Election in Palm Springs. For the first time in over a decade there is a large group of interesting candidates running for Palm Springs City Council and Mayor. There is also a race for two seats on the Desert Water Board. So far three are running. Two incumbents have decided not to run, (for council and mayor) so the numbers running are many. By August 14, all will be in place. In the past few elections, incumbents- well funded incumbents I might add, ran and won. This November will change the leadership of the City at council, and perhaps with the staff as well.

Senior population and visitors certainly have a good time here as well. The politics is how much should the city concern themselves about making so much money for that industry. Millions for the mall. And less for neighborhood improvements, the homeless residents, a struggling Police Department- that is well run and staffed, but simply needs more staff. Measure B (remember Measure B) was suppose to help our PSPD. The mayor’s campaign said it would. So, pay attention. The best part is that all the candidates are around an want your vote. They will all sit down with you and discuss the issues. This is easily the most important election since 2003. Participate. And register to vote...... it will be very fun

The issues are many and complex. The giant elephant in the room is the Museum Fashion Plaza .aka, the Mall. The cost of this project would be a giant in any city’s budget. For a town or size, it is a record. It is great for tourism, which, lets face it ,after Health care, tourism is our own job creator. No problem..we are trendy for youth- witness the 5000 folks this last weekend at the Splash House- drinking, music and swimming. We have done all this for decades in our town. The more the merrier.
