The Anatomy of a DUI An Overview of Alcohol By Manuel J. Barba, DUI Defense Attorney In my last article I provided a brief overview of how alcohol is eliminated from the body. This article will focus on how Alcohol affects Men and Women differently. Alcohol in Men vs. Women As I discussed in a previous article, alcohol has an affinity for water. This means that alcohol is attracted to body tissues and organs that have a high water content. Once the alcohol moves from the stomach into the blood, it will be distributed throughout the various body tissues and organs by the blood in proportion to their water contents, and deposited in those tissues and organs by the blood. Brain tissue and muscle have a fairly high water content, so the brain and muscle receive a substantial share of the distributed alcohol. On the other hand, fat tissue contains very little water so very little alcohol will be deposited in the drinker’s body fat. The affinity of alcohol for water, and its lack of affinity for fat, helps explain an important difference in the way alcohol affects women and men. Pound for pound, the typical female’s body contains less water than does the typical male’s. This is because males generally have more muscle mass than do females. Also, females generally have more fatty tissue, designed in part to protect a child in the womb. The typical male body is

20

about 68% water, and the typical female only about 55%. Thus, when a woman drinks, she has less fluid -- pound for pound -- in which to distribute the alcohol. Thus, if a woman and a man who weighed exactly the same drank exactly the same amount of alcohol under the same circumstances, the woman’s BAC would climb higher than his. This is because more of the alcohol will remain in the woman’s blood stream than in the man’s blood stream, because more of the alcohol in the man’s blood stream would be deposited in the muscle tissues. When we couple this to the fact that the average woman is smaller than the average man, it becomes apparent that a given amount of alcohol will cause a higher BAC in a woman than it usually will in a man. This explains why the average female will usually become intoxicated sooner than the average male, assuming they drink the same amount of alcohol. Thus from a practical perspective, when consuming alcohol, women should consider the fact that they will achieve a higher BAC than will a man, drinking the same alcohol beverages. For example, consider “Jack,” he weighs 170 lbs., drinking five Corona beers (4.84 alcohol concentration) on an empty stomach. He starts drinking at 9:00 p.m. and takes his last drink at 12:00 midnight, thus consuming the beers over three hours. Jack’s BAC would peak at 12:30 a.m. at 0.069% (+/- 0.027%). Now consider Jill, also weighs 170 lbs., drinking the same five Corona beers on an empty stomach. She also starts drinking at 9:00 p.m. and takes her last drink Continued on page 42

LEATHER REALM by Dave Murdock When I submitted my article last week I noticed that it was my 33rd article for the magazine. At first I doubted my eyes, I actually went back and counted to make sure I hadn’t numbered them wrong. But I was correct, I have been writing this column for over 8 months now. Eight months isn’t a long time, comparatively, but it still surprised me that it had been that long. And that got me to thinking about time and our perception of it.

never heard of most of the songs from this gay icon. He’d heard of Stonewall, but only in the same way that you’ve heard of the depression or Houdini. If I had said “The Mattachine Society” I’m sure he would have thought it was some heavy metal band.

For me it seems as if the Leather community has been around forever and, because I’ve been a part of it for so long, personally that’s almost true. I had my first BD/SM experience when I was 21, over 44 years ago. (Do the math, yes, I’m 65, still chicken here in glorious Palm Springs). But in reality, in context of a global timeline, the organized gay Leather community has only been in existence for the blink of an eye. Notice I said organized, I’m sure some of those gladiators were getting it on, but no one that I know of wrote about it back then.

So I looked back at the leather timeline. What If you were born in 1990? That would make you 25, 4 years OLDER than I was when I had my first Leathersex. The Satyrs Motorcycle Club, the first gay motorcycle club was already 37 years old. Alan Selby, the S in Mr. S, opened the very first Mr. S in London 22 years before you popped out. Chain Male #1, a seminal photo essay on SM and bondage was published 21 year before. What year do you think the first Leather bars made their appearance? The first one I know of is The Gold Coast in Chicago in 1958, followed shortly by The Big Dollar and Keller’s in NY, and the Why Not in SF. The year you were born the famous Tool Box (successor to the Why Not), had already been closed for 19 years.

You’ve all seen those article where they have statements like “If you graduated in the year 2000 you: A) always thought cell phones were small, B) you’ve never know a world without MTV, etc., etc.) Well, first off I’ll put a Gay spin on it. Friends and I saw the late, great, Jim Bailey perform as Judy Garland and a young(er) friend who was there had no idea of what role Judy Garland played in the Stonewall riots, had

OK, so why the trip down memory lane? Well, it’s evident that the public appearance of the Leather lifestyle is relatively young, but, just like my friend not knowing about Judy Garland songs, it seems as if our Leather history is ancient, at least to all of you twenty-something’s out there. Aristotle wrote “If you would understand anything, observe its beginning and its development.” After all, that’s why the Continued on page 45

Michael Sam, the first openly gay player drafted by a National Football League team, is stepping “away from the game at this time.” After being cut last season by both the St. Louis Rams, who drafted him, and the Dallas Cowboys, Sam signed with the Canadian Football League’s Montreal Alouettes. After a brief absence in June, he played sparingly, and then decided to leave the team. Sam’s heroic efforts are recognised not just by the many talented athletes that tried to go professional. He should also be recognised by the gay community., for the way he lived his out-ting in-front of millions of die hard straight people and won grace and dignity for the rest of us. Naked (Hentai EXPOSED) Hentai IS ART! Gay history is full of deceptions and lies created by well intentioned people to castrate our gay heritage and vilify them as monsters to little children. Hentai is not gay s a perversion

Hentai is a Sino-Japanese compound term widely used in modern Japanese to designate a person, action or state that is considered queer or perverse, particularly in a sexual sense. Unlike the English term ‘queer’, however, hentai does not have predominantly homosexual connotations but can be used to describe any sexual acts or motivations other than what might be termed ‘historic/biblical’ sexual relations Left: A depiction of a male homosexual couple from the January 1928 edition of Hentai shiryō..

at 12:00 midnight, consuming the beers over three hours. Jill’s BAC would peak at 12:30 p.m. at 0.081% (+/- 0.033%). In this example, the amount of alcohol consumed was the same – five Corona beers. The circumstances surrounding the drinking were also the same – both Jack and Jill each weighed170 lbs, both drank on empty stomachs (no food), and both consumed the five beers spread over the same three hour period. Yet at 12:30 a.m., Jack’s BAC would peak at .069% and Jill’s BAC would peak at .081%. In this specific situation, it would be unlawful for Jill to drive a motor vehicle at 12:30 a.m. because her BAC at that time is “0.080% or more at the time of driving.” Considering that Jack’s BAC peaked at 0.069% at 12:30

a.m., he would never have reached 0.080% under this specific scenario and could drive legally assuming he is not impaired. In the next part of this article, I will discuss how alcohol is eliminated from the body. Stay tuned… and until then, be safe. Attorney Manuel J. Barba can be reached at 760-770-3377 or 951-680-9125. JERSEY’S JOURNAL by Jersey Shore I guess most people don’t realize my sarcasm regarding, well, everything. I don’t take things too seriously, not meaning I don’t care. I prefer to approach each situation with humor and humility. Let the pot (on the stove) not get stirred up. Let it simmer on low and turn off the stove top.

After the surgery where 95% of my abdomen was redecorated with Mesh accents and relocating entry ways, my nurse who was also a friend, said That I was such a good patient. That statement struck me a bit odd, as I guess I was brought up well. You can still be polite while in pain. Like a Bride-to-Be who gets married suddenly has the right to act like Godzilla? What bothers me is the people who sit there and take it. I dust off my hands because I am out. Walk away. Sanity is more valuable. Lock me in my house until the divorce! That’s gonna be a long two weeks! You need to laugh. Laughter IS the best Medicine. Every emotion is important to let out, like crying, but I would try extra hard to let the ones that are positive out as many times as you can for a happy life. It’s easy and free! Like me! The results are better than Botox. I think crack off a pile of dog poo is better than Botox. I never had the need to paralyze my face, as my face is my fortune. And look how wealthy I am. Now that was Sarcastic!!! 44

Peace, Love, and Laughter, Jersey Throw Back Thursdays with Jersey Shore @ UltraMax Cinemas. Event starts at 6pm Mixed Nuts...coming soon! Contact Jersey @ Dragapalooza@aol.com or on Facebook under Jersey Shore

Leather Archives and Museum was born in 1991, to record our history. If you aren’t already doing it make sure that your Leather club or organization has a historian, and that they make sure that everything the club does is documented and recorded. Many clubs lose their history because no one took the time to record it. Even our very own PSLOD has yet to appoint a full time historian, and Avatar Club LA has only had one on and off, relying mostly on institutional memory. But why keep the records? Well, for me it’s because it’s fascinating to find out where we came from. Every time I see one of my Avatar brothers who was a founding member of the club I pump him for information. And every time I do so another piece of the puzzle falls into place for me. I find out the why’s and wherefores, not only of our organizations but of our Leather Culture. So, hunt down the founding members of your clubs, talk to the men and women who helped shape our history, and then write it down. You’ll find the effort well worth while. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------If you have any questions about the Leather scene, or would like to see an article about a specific topic or event, please send an email to LeatherRealm@gmail.com.

Transgender Notes

“I think I killed a he/she,” claimed accused Killer and coward Marine Pfc. Joseph Scott Pemberton, told the court in Olongapo city, northwest of Manila, that Jennifer Laude was choked unconscious but breathing when he left her in the shower of a motel. Activists demanded again on Monday that Pemberton be turned over to Philippine custody, saying the current arrangement “is a continuing affront to our national sovereignty.” Murder and Suicide attempts are alarmingly common among transgender individuals. 41% try to kill themselves at some point in their lives, compared with 4.6% of the general public. NEW SURVEY The 2015 U.S. Trans Survey Is now available! The 2015 U.S. Trans Survey is the new name of the largest survey ever devoted to the lives and experiences of trans people. THAT IS FUNNY A boy goes to the drug store with his dad and sees the condom display. Boy: “Dad, why do they do packs of one condom?” Dad: “Those are for the high-schoolers for Friday nights.” Boy: “So, why do they make packs of three?” Dad: “For the college guys for Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.” Boy: “Then why do they make packs of 12?” Dad: “Those are for married couples -- you know, January, February, March.” A twink goes on a hot date and ends up making out with a hot dad in his car. The daddie asks if she would like to go in the backseat. “No!” Yells the twink. Things get even hotter, and the daddie asks again. “For the last time, no!” says the twink. Frustrated, the daddie asks, “Well, why the hell not?” The twink says, “Because I wanna stay up here with you!”

WEEKLY GUIDE TO THE STARS ARIES: March 21 - April 20 A friend is moving up in the world and you’re in for the long haul. Let yourself ride on somebody else’s coattails for a change. TAURUS: April 21 - May 19 A dispute at work is more complicated than it looks, so play it by ear. You’ve just begun to scratch the surface of what’s been going on. GEMINI: May 20 - June 21 Let an association develop on its own. You and the other party are in no position to make long-term plans although you’d like to one day. CANCER: June 22 - July 22 Let someone else take the credit for what you’ve done. Everyone knows the truth. What you lose in recognition, you gain in cachet.

46

LEO: July 23 - August 22 This is an excellent time to renegotiate a contract or loan. You could wind up with some unexpected money in your pocket. VIRGO: August 23 - Sept. 22 You can still back out if you want to, but what looks like an expensive step will pay for itself weeks from now. LIBRA: Sept. 23 - October 22 Lately you’ve been streamlining acquaintances. There’s nothing wrong with fraternizing exclusively with people you know are in your corner. SCORPIO: October 23 - Nov. 21 Someone finally gets back to you about an offer. It’s not as much as you hoped, but it makes for a nice start. Let the negotiating begin!

SAGITTARIUS: Nov. 22 - Dec. 20 You’re in the stronger position so you don’t have to get high-handed. Simply allude to what you could do and the defiant steps back into line. CAPRICORN: Dec. 21 - Jan. 19 It looks like you’ll finally get what you want after weeks of handholding, coaxing, and cajoling. And it’s definitely worth it. AQUARIUS: Jan 20 - Feb. 18 An opponent can be just as stubborn as you, but it’s your sincere conviction that winds up giving him moment for pause. PISCES: Feb 19 - March 20 You’ll be garnering a win, but not without putting some noses out of joint. You can always offer to help straighten them out again in a couple of weeks.
