The Anatomy of a DUI An Overview of Alcohol By Manuel J. Barba, DUI Defense Attorney In my last article I provided a brief overview of how alcohol is absorbed into the body. This article will focus on how the consumed alcohol distributes throughout the body. Distribution Once the alcohol moves from the stomach into the small intestine, it will absorb into the blood. Thereafter the alcohol is distributed throughout the body by the blood. Alcohol has an affinity for water. The blood will carry the alcohol to the various tissues and organs of the body, and will deposit the alcohol in them in proportion to their water contents. Brain tissue has a fairly high water content, so the brain receives a substantial share of the distributed alcohol. Muscle tissue also has a reasonably high water content and thus also gets alcohol. Fat tissue however contains very little water; thus very little alcohol will be deposited in the drinker’s body fat. This is one factor that differentiates alcohol from certain other drugs, notably PCP and THC, which are very soluble in fat.

en and men. Pound for pound, the typical female’s body contains a good deal less water than does the typical man’s. This is because women have additional fatty tissue, designed in part to protect a child in the womb. The typical male body is about 68% water, and the typical female body is only about 55%. Thus, when a woman drinks, she has less fluid -- pound for pound -- in which to distribute the alcohol. If a woman and a man who weigh exactly the same drank exactly the same amount of alcohol under the same circumstances, her blood alcohol concentration (BAC) would climb higher than his. When we couple this to the fact that the average woman is smaller than the average man, it becomes apparent that a given amount of alcohol will cause a higher BAC in a woman than it usually will in a man. In the next part of this article, I will discuss how the body eliminates alcohol. Stay tuned… and until then, be safe. DUI Defense Attorney Manuel J. Barba can be reached at 760-770-3377 or 951-6809125. For more information visit www. BarbaLawyer.com.

Alcohol’s affinity for water, and its lack of affinity for fat, helps explain an important difference in the way alcohol affects wom20

LEATHER REALM by Dave Murdock A while ago I spent a very pleasant evening at Streetbar and met a really interesting couple from Australia. They had never been to the bar before, in fact one of them, the big muscle bear, had never been to Palm Springs before. They were both very comfortable with themselves, each other and the environs, and made friends with the locals very easily. Both of them got up onstage to sing karaoke, even though one of them had never sang in front of an audience before. That turned into a touching moment because the one not onstage was rooting him on, giving him encouragement and basically telling him to “Sing out Louise!”, which he did and he had everyone in the audience rooting for him and when he finished the audience gave him a huge round of applause! By the end of the evening they both had their pictures taken onstage while they were singing, they both made fun and flirtatious remarks to the bartender, (in fact one even blushed, a rare event in and of itself) and all of them joked about going home together. They bought rounds, other people they’d met bought rounds, shirts came off on the patio and everyone had a great time. “OK” I hear you ask “So what’s the big deal? Everything you’ve describing happens pretty regularly in every gay bar in the universe.” Well, yes it does, but in this case the “couple” was straight and married (not to each other)! And today as I was thinking about what I was going to write about for this column they came to mind. 28

Here were two straight people, probably both fifty-ish, having a fantastic time in a gay bar, and, in turn, we were all having a great time with them. And today, as I was reflecting on that I thought “Hey, you know why we had such a great time? Because a) they were great people b) no one reacted to stereotypes. And that’s the point of all of this really. How do we react when we meet someone whose life experience, body type, skin color, etc. is different than our own? Do we run and hide? Do we turn our backs on “them” thinking we can have nothing in common? Do we turn our noses up because they don’t meet our criteria? And I’m not just talking straight vs. gay here, although that certainly would fit one stereotype. I’m talking about our own community. How many times have we missed out on great conversation and meeting good people because they’re not in our milieu, or not to our tastes? If a Leatherman meets a drag queen or a twink I think the automatic response is “We’ll have nothing in common.”, and move on to someone more like ourselves, because “they” couldn’t possibly meet our criteria. Well, speaking “ex-cathedra from my belly button”, as one of Heinlein’s characters puts it, I think it’s because of fear. That’s right, fear. We’re afraid we won’t fit into their circle, or afraid we’ll be made fun of by our peers for talking with “someone not like us”. After all, the basis for all discrimi- Continued on page 45

NAKED (HISTORY)! NOT LENNY KRAVITZ This hot historic photo taken right after this solider completed his heroic act. Naked. Photo taken by Horace Bristol (1908-1997). In 1941, “…we got a call to pick up an airman who was down in the Bay. This solider stripped off his clothes and jumped in to bring him aboard. JERSEY’S JOURNAL by Jersey Shore People continuously seem to amaze me. I am not the sanest person walking the earth, but at least I have a grasp on reality. How do you not tell the difference between a fake fur and a real one? Unlike a fur coat that is an inanimate object, people walk and talk and express themselves, so spotting a fake should be fairly easy in the long run as they are moving. But yet, once again, I am encountering people who can’t see what’s in front of their faces. It could be a serial killer or a box of cereal and in their mind they see dollar signs and their best friend standing in front of you while stabbing you in the back. Well, these days I see you with that knife, ready to plunge it in my back, but you can’t penetrate me. The knife becomes one of those trick rubber knives and as much as you stab away with that psycho music playing in the back ground, nothing happens. It can’t hurt you if you let it. I’m at that point in my life that I don’t even acknowledge that there is anyone remotely near me with a knife. You can’t get stabbed in the back by a non existent crazy person. The second you do me wrong, I cut you out of my life. If I cut you out of my life, well....you don’t exist. Things that don’t exist can’t hurt you. Instead of acknowledging the knife dwellers, start acknowledging the good people in your short lifespan and start making 44

those great memories and making life count as every second is valuable. Peace, Love, and Reality, Jersey

nation is fear. Fear of the unknown is the major cause of bigotry if we stop to think about it. The young Adonis basking in his own masculinity may not go up and talk to an old person, or a fat person or an ugly person, or vice-versa. How many times are we, the guilty parties, missing out on a good thing because we react to stereotypes? If the couple I described in the beginning of this article reacted that way we would have all been the poorer for it. But they didn’t, and we accepted them for who they were, and vice-versa, and a good time was had by all. So I’m challenging you. The next time you walk into a bar, leave your fears behind and go up and talk to someone you might not have thought about talking to before. Even if it’s nothing more than walking up to them and saying “Hi, how are you doing tonight?”. Maybe nothing will spark, maybe you won’t get into a great conversation, but so what? You’ll never know until you try, will you? -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------If you have any questions about the Leather scene, or would like to see an article about a specific topic or event, please send an email to

Transgender Notes

American Idol Assholes of the week! This show has reportedly, shamelessly exploited the transgender bandwagon! 21-year-old musician Ryan Cassata -- a transgender singer, songwriter and activist claims he was solicited by a casting director after initially being rejected by the show. Presumably because of transgender status only, In a YouTube video and an impassioned note posted to his Facebook page last week, Cassata derided the show for exploitation:

THAT IS FUNNY Did you hear about the homosexual letter? Only came in male boxes. I think my neighbor is stalking me as she’s been googling my name on her computer. I saw it through my telescope last night. I named my hard drive “dat ass” so once a month my computer asks if I want to ‘back dat ass up’. My husband and I were happy for twenty years. Then we met. That awkward moment when you leave a store without buying anything and all you can think is “act natural, you’re innocent”. A recent study has found that women who carry a little extra weight live longer than the men who mention it.

WEEKLY GUIDE TO THE STARS ARIES: March 20 - April 18: Emotions aren’t things to be ignored. A tiff could turn into something much more complicated if left unaddressed. CAPRICORN: Dec. 21 - Jan. 18: Some one is following you so watch and follow back. There is a problem your not addressing and its causing back strain. AQUARIUS: Jan. 19 - Feb. 17: Keep a problem to yourself if its the other person, if its impacting you let it out. THE LAST WORD by George W. Zander Since the first time there was a discussion in January, at Palm Springs City Council, about getting results by forming a Homeless Task Force, a there was actually on July 22 was a first meeting. Hooray!! Some leaders in the community around helping the Homeless folks in our city joined the Task Force. Arlene from Well in the Desert, Joy from Crystal Fantasy/Main Street; PSPD Community Officer Barron Lane, Bergett from Safe House of the Desert, and some from Riverside County Mental Health, Coachella Valley Rescue Mission, and Roy’s. Ginny Foat pulled the group together. There were sub-committees formed to reach out on the issues of Housing, Health, and Youth. Folks jumped on board. I was appointed as a member of the Youth Sub-committee, largely because of Equality California working on the issue. It is estimated that nearly 40% of homeless kids on the street in California are LGBTQ.

Now we have a start. At least we are on the way to get more money and more solutions to this challenge for our community and city government. Though it took way too long-welcome to government; we are now on the way to doing important work for all the residents of the city. Too many in our city, and I hope you are not one, look down upon this population. Homelessness is a tapestry of everywhere in the world, most of these folks are not criminals. I see an improvement already with the Task Force and Community organizing beginning! Watch this space.

In my fabulous and wonderful neighborhood of Warm Sands you cannot go anywhere without seeing these kids. The business owners especially the folks at Starbucks and Jack in the Box are all very supportive.
