LEATHER REALM by Dave Murdock Sometimes it’s a pain in the ass following the Leather codes of Trust, Honor, and Respect. It’s just sometimes seems more convenient to tell that little white lie, or to pretend you didn’t hear someone backstabbing another member of the community, or to let an untruth go unchallenged. Bertrand Russell wrote “We have in fact, two kinds of morality, side by side: one that we preach, but do not practice, and another that we practice, but seldom preach.” And therein lies the rub. As a Leather person one is taught, and then one teaches, that you always take the high road. You always give someone the benefit of the doubt. You always check facts before believing rumors. You always tell the truth about your skills. You always protect a fellow Leatherman’s reputation until such time as it is proven that he longer deserves respect. You trust your Leather family implicitly because they will never harm you. You honor those who came before you AND those who will take your place. You respect your fellow Leathermen at all times. Sure you’re supposed to do all of those things, and you teach newbies that’s the way to do it, but in reality we are all human, hard as that is to believe sometimes <grin>. OK, now we get back to Bertrand Russell again, because I think he’s hit it on the head. You’re taught to do one thing, but then reality happens and you have to make choices. You tell that little white lie, either to spare someone’s feelings, or to save face. Is that 26

going against the Leather code? Well, yes it is. You’re supposed to be honest with your Leather brothers and sisters because they need to know what you are really thinking. And you’re supposed to own up to any transgressions you might have made because that’s the honorable thing to do. You raise your hand way up high and say “Yup, I screwed up”, and then try to make amends, even though it’s not a very comfortable situation to be in. Either way you are continually finding yourself at a moral crossroads. So, what do you do? Well, as I said, we’re all human and sometimes we don’t make the right choices, even though we know they’re right. But does that make the choice correct? No, it doesn’t. I recently found myself in a situation where I read another Leather person castigating a respected (and very influential) member of the community, and then went on to criticize another organization without trying to offer constructive criticism first. I could have let it slide, neither of the communications was made public. Neither the person nor the organization would be hurt because they probably wouldn’t find out. And, the person making the comments was a friend, and someone who has been in the community for a long time, and thus deserved my respect. I knew if I said something that it would cause a firestorm, something no one needs in their life, but I sincerely couldn’t, in good conscience, do so. And I got heat for it. No, I’m certainly Continued on page 41

RESORT PALM SPRINGS STYLE THE TWENTY DOLLAR TRICK The twenty dollar bill trick is sweeping the travel industry and becoming extremely popular, especially in Las Vegas. When you check into a hotel you simply slip the front desk clerk a $20 bill with your credit card, while asking “Do you have any complimentary upgrades available?”. The general rule of thumb is that the front desk clerk will check for upgrades and if they cannot find anything they will return the $20 tip, making it risk free!

DID YOU KNOW?

Do you know James Smithson’s legacy. Smithson was the illegitimate child of the 1st Duke of Northumberland, born in Paris and never once set foot in the Americas. It was very likely Smithson was gay. One of Smithson’s college mentors, William Thomson, was accused of having sex with a young boy and fled to Italy. What is not really known is why Smithson left his money to the U.S. having never visited Nonetheless, this scientist who lived a solitary life on the sly and whose career had little impact, would be attached forever to an institution of learning in a nation without inherited titles. But 1829 he had trust the US would be the beacon of light for all the people of the world. “I then bequeath the whole of my property, . . . to the United States of America, to found at Washington, under the name of the Smithsonian Institution, an Establishment for the increase & diffusion of knowledge among men.” We do not know if Smithson was gay but we got from him 100 sacks of gold and a divided congress ultimatly did the right thing for the people. “Modern civilization depends on science … James Smithson 38

not holding myself up as a paragon of virtue. I’m usually the one holding up my hand and saying “I f***ed up, sorry” And, in hindsight, I realized that there was a better way to handle it by talking to the person privately, instead of in a an email, and it’s something I did apologize for. But it does serve to illustrate my point. You have to make hard choices sometimes, and sometimes you’re right and sometimes you screw up. And sometimes you do the right thing for the wrong reason, or at the wrong time. So, where does that leave us? Well, I think that striving for the correct thing to do is what we should hold up as the hallmark of what makes a perfect Leatherman. Does that mean we’ll always achieve it? Decidedly not. Sometimes you’re tired, or hurt, or angry and it influences your decision making at the moment. That, however doesn’t make it right, it only makes you human. So the next time you have a moral decision to make at least try to figure out why you’re making that decision and try to decide if it’s the right thing to do. OK, I’m not telling you anything you haven’t heard, I know that. Just consider it a gentle reminder. If you have any questions about the Leather scene, or would like to see an article about a specific topic or event, please send an email to LeatherRealm@gmail.com.

Pentagon to Lift Transgender Ban in the Military In a statement, Secretary of Defense Ash Carter said We have transgender soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines — real, patriotic Americans — who I know are being hurt by an outdated, confusing, inconsistent approach that’s contrary to our value of service and individual merit,” he said. The Williams Institute at UCLA estimates that 15,500 transgender people currently serve in the armed forces.

THAT IS FUNNY I need volunteers For what? I’m going to the airport wearing an expensive black dress with a diamond necklace and glasses of champagne in both hands, waltzing through, casually reminding my chauffeur to haul my bags in for me. I need 4-5 attractive people (race+gender doesn’t matter) wearing clothes that are not better than mine, and cool sunglasses begging me not to leave, on their knees, barely grasping my dress because they want me to stay but at the same time they know the dress is worth more than anything they can ever afford. Turning around ever so slightly and almost spilling, but not quite all the way there, my champagne, I’ll laugh and say quite loudly, “darlings I have to visit my ACTUAL husband!” Back in my day, we didn’t have menu screens. When a movie ended it was replaced by a tranquil, bright blue screen that suddenly became screeching, demonic static if you didn’t turn off the TV in time.

THE LAST WORD by George W. Zander Amid celebrations and marriages around the nation, there are still a couple of nasty blemishes. First....There are daily news reports that state and local officials that are continuing to deny marriage licenses to same-sex couples — and in some cases are shutting down operations entirely. Nasty. So, Congressional Democrats have jumped on this. In a letter dated July 9, the group of Democratic lawmakers led by Rep. Mark Pocan (D-Wis.) calls on U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch to take steps to enforce the ruling and ensure same-sex couples can obtain a marriage license in all 50 states. “The state and local officials standing in the way of marriage equality for all are standing on the wrong side of history,” Pocan said in a statement. “The Supreme Court’s ruling was clear: Marriage equality is a right enshrined in the Constitution. Denying samesex couples their constitutionally protected rights is backwards and has no place in our democracy. This contempt for people who want nothing more than to be happy with their loved ones is an affront to our Constitution.”

couples, but nonetheless urges “appropriate steps” and “any actions necessary.” Second- We have, which is not a surprise, heard that LGBT hate crimes have elevated around our nation and locally since June 26. There have been beatings, shootings and harassment and general elevations in homophobia and trans-phobia. Even on Arenas Road in Palm Springs (sacred ground) there was one clearly deranged man wandering the street and ended up attacking two over- 70 year old men. Folks grabbed him and held him until the PSPD could get him in jail. He has been accused of hate crimes. Even though we have little trouble in California with the first one, the second one needs us all to be aware of our surroundings and our be vigelent.

The letter doesn’t specify what action the Justice Department should take to ensure clerks afford marriage licenses to same-sex George W. Zander Field Manager, Equality California 760.409.0208 george.zander@eqca.org Visit us at desertdailyguide.com and Like us on Facebook.com/desertdailyguide
