LEATHER REALM by Dave Murdock Most of you have been in a bar and noticed someone wearing a vest festooned with multicolored heraldic pins and/or back patches. Sometimes the vest is made of denim, especially if the owner belongs to a motorcycle club, but, most often today it’s made of leather. But what do all the pins and patches mean? Generically they’re called friendship pins or run pins or club colors, and the whole thing started, you guessed it, back in the days of the first gay motorcycle clubs in Southern California that began the biker look that was adopted by the Leather community. When going to a club sponsored event (or “run”) the members of that clubs wanted some way to distinguish themselves and to honor their organizations, and so the back patch was born. To commemorate a specific run special pins were made, sometimes just with the club emblem and year, sometimes with slogans and sometimes just the logo and year (the variety only limited by the imagination of the designers). They first adorned the cloth motorcycle caps then in general use that have been more or less replaced by the typical leather biker/confederate style cap or the more formal Muir cap. The shift to wearing leather vests adorned with pins probably began with Oedipus Motorcycle club in LA in the early 70’s who began the practice of wearing run pins on leather sashes that were worn for formal events. The designs on the back patches are obviously meant to denote that you are a member of that specific club or organization. 26
Sometimes they are extremely heraldic, and only utilize symbols, like the 3 pronged spear of worn by members of Trident International, sometimes they include at least a part of the name, like the opposing mace and flogger surrounding the number 13 emblazoned on a black leather glove that sit under the words “Chicago Hellfire Club”. Especially when the patch is only a symbol it’s perfectly appropriate to politely approach someone and as what organization the patch signifies and even what the symbol itself means. Now, don’t get upset if they don’t know, sometimes the meaning behind the symbol gets lost in the clubs history, sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes the meaning is obvious as with a trident standing for TRIDENT, other times it’s much less obvious. Avatar Club Los Angeles central logo is that of an artists rendition of the first letter of the Sanskrit alphabet! Sometimes they’re very simple, again using Trident as an example, and sometimes they’re extremely complex, each color and pattern having a meaning, similar to heraldry. While it’s important to club members to know the meanings of the emblems they wear, it’s not as important, except as an intellectual exercise, for non-members to understand the exact meaning. What is important, however, is the meaning behind whether something is a run pin or the club colors. Run pins are given out to those who attend specific events, be it a motorcycle club run or the anniversary of a bar or organization. There’s Continued on page 41

RESORT PALM SPRINGS STYLE THE TWENTY DOLLAR TRICK The twenty dollar bill trick is sweeping the travel industry and becoming extremely popular, especially in Las Vegas. When you check into a hotel you simply slip the front desk clerk a $20 bill with your credit card, while asking “Do you have any complimentary upgrades available?”. The general rule of thumb is that the front desk clerk will check for upgrades and if they cannot find anything they will return the $20 tip, making it risk free!

JERSEY’S JOURNAL by Jersey Shore I heard the juiciest story about you the other day. I heard it from that guy who knew you a year ago. Or he saw you walking around Arena. It’s got to be true because that guy who you met a year ago said so. Are you that gullible that you believe everything you read and hear? Of course you must know I am being sarcastic. If you don’t, then I also wonder what else you believe. That drunken gay drama. I avoid it like the plague. Life is too short for gossip and drama and here say. If I decide to go on line and read something, even if it’s regarding health issues or something informational, I think of the source and use my best judgment to find my answer. So much of what is on the world wide web is fabricated. ANY fool with a computer and too much time on their hands can create anything they want. Well fabricate me into one rich bitch! Then I can buy a private island and get the fudge outta Dodge. I don’t hear too much said about me. I try very hard to be a good person, but I am human. I’ve have had some obstacles and if someone wants to TRY to bring me down, then all I have to say is Good Luck to you, ya vicious prick! It comes back three fold. Apparently your life is lacking something like depth and feeling. Apparently you are miserable and well, you did it to yourself. It’s not my problem. I have 40
a great life and you being jealous of my life or successes means nothing to me. It’s kinda pathetic because my life is very dull, so that means your life must really suck donkey balls, and if you like sucking donkey balls then I guess your life IS better! Add that fact to your Wikipedia entry. That might be the one true fact on that site! Peace, Love and Truth, Jersey Contact Jersey @ Dragapalooza@aol.com or follow on Facebook @ Jersey Shore.

also friendship pins, so called because they are meant to be distributed to friends of a specific organization, and, many times the friendship pins are highly prized because it means you have been recognized by that organization, or at least by one of it’s members, as being worthy to wear their pin. Club colors, on the other hand, are supposed to be worn only by members of that specific organization. Most clubs have patches that are only given to full members of the club, and, sometimes a slightly different version if you are an associate member. In either case it is considered in extremely bad form to wear the back patch of an organization to which you don’t belong, unless of course you have been made an honorary member of that club. In most cases if you withdraw from a club you turn in your colors because you are no longer a member. Many people have several vests, more typically the bar vests are covered in pins that denote one’s history in the leather community. Other times the vest only has one or two pins that have special significance to the wearer. In either case when wearing a vest that is ornamented by your club colors it usually is a club sanction that while wearing the colors you will refrain from embarrassing behavior because you are acting as a representative of the club. So there, the history and meanings of colors and pins in a little over 700 words.

Transgender Notes
Thanks to three people the West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles will no longer dictate how transgender residents can dress for driver’s license photos, reversing a policy that many LGBT advocates consider unconstitutional. The state formally changed its policy July 1 after three transgender women threatened to sue, saying they were harassed or forced to remove makeup while trying to update their driver’s license. Michael Silverman, executive director of the Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund, said the changes in West Virginia and South Carolina showed that government officials were being forced to become more cognizant of the way they treated transgender people. THAT IS FUNNY Birthdays are kinda funny in a way that we get presents for basically not dying for a year. I hate when doctors ask “how are you?” I’m at the doctors office how the fuck do you think I am! Don’t be that person who gets bitten by a zombie but keeps it a secret from the rest of your group. My sisters friend brought brownies in cupcake wrappers to my house and I picked one up and turned it over and noticed there were Oreos baked into the bottom so I gasped and said to my dad “THESE ARE NOT REGULAR BROWNIES” and my dads eyes went so wide and he whispered “pot?” Before you send someone an ugly message perhaps ex-foliate your skin, set some life goals and contemplate why you’ve reached this point.

THE LAST WORD by George W. Zander When I spoke in December, 2014 about taking care of our unhoused population in our city, I threw out the idea, based on a discussion at the Police Advisory Board meeting. Something needed to be done which was not just using PSPD time and energy. At the first council meeting in January, the mayor thanked me for my comments and appointed Ms. Foat and himself as a sub-committee to form a Task Force on the issue. And now today is July 1st. And we have not progressed. Homeless encampments and resources are needed. It is important that we fight for them because of what we can do for people’s day-to-day quality of life is paramount to being a top tier city. Homelessness encampments are absolutely necessary today for someone who is on our streets. They are temporary, yes, but they are important. They are a first step toward something bigger and better opportunities for our residents’ lives. They provide needed shelter, security, resources and hope. They give folks an address. They can give folks a way back. One of the most important political points that needs to be emphasized is that for the most part, when you hear elected folks saying, “Oh, we can’t be regulating or allowing encampments in various parts of the city, that’s not a real solution.” That’s not it, it is
simply a reason not to do something that can really help people Nearly every morning as I go to my local Warm Sands Starbucks, are the visions. Yesterday. 2 boys, probably under 18 were sitting in the parking lot and one was crying. I asked what they needed and they said water..so I went inside and grabbed a couple of bottles of water...that ends my knowledge ... or folks sleeping on the porch of the EQCA office- they simply need water and the bathroom..but I know they appreciated it. Also 40% of LGBT kids are homeless in this state. Many are victims of human trafficking. We need to reach out to our bothers and sisters in the LGBT community. What better city to do something. I will end with a plea do not wait..we still have 3 months of summer remaining. Our residents are suffering. From Martin Luther King,Jr., his words sum it up. “We are now faced with the fact that tomorrow is today. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now. In this unfolding conundrum of life and history there is such a thing as being too late. This is no time for apathy or complacency. This is the time for vigorous and positive action.” Thank you. I look forward to working together with all on this community challenge. .....
