LEATHER REALM by Dave Murdock The dust has settled so I’d like to take this opportunity to send heartfelt CONGRATULATIONS to Clifton Tatum. He made Palm Springs proud over Memorial Day weekend at International Mr. Leather, coming in 1st in the preliminaries, and 8th overall out of a field of over 50 men! That’s what I call a great job. And congratulations to Patrick Smith, Mr. LA Leather for bringing the IML sash back to California. And now back to our series… In Part 1 I talked about responsibilities of a Top/ Dominant to your submissive/bottom/boy/ pup, in Part 2 I began a discussion on how to have a great time in a scene, Part 3 talked about the importance of communication and Part 4 was all about Trust. This week we’ll talk about Limits.
dominant has to be able to hear and understand those limits. Limits can be set in conversation before the scene ever begins, but they are most certainly set in a scene by the use of safe words. All the way from here I hear you say “What is a safe word?” I’m glad you asked. Just imagine a scenario where you couldn’t stop something that was painful, physically or emotionally. Not a great place to be, so some enterprising soul made up what we call safe words. They’re set up before the scene ever takes place, and are used by the submissive to set immediate limits. They can take many forms, many times as simple as the basic Green, Yellow & Red. Green meaning “Keep going, I’m enjoying what you’re doing”, Yellow for “I’m approaching my limit, so slow down or vary the intensity”, and Red means “STOP” (and stop immediately, the scene is over right that instant, not Stop when the dominant’s ready to).
Everyone (OK, with a few extremely rare exceptions) has limits. It might be the number of push-ups they can do, the number of hours they can work, the number of times they’ll look the other way. Those limits, and others like them, are set by the One very important caveat, these limits are individual. Only you can know where your set by the submissive. The dominant DOES limits are, and you usually don’t broadcast NOT set the limits. Again, these are basic them to others, at least until afterwards rules. Once you know each other very well when you might say “That was just the you MIGHT decide, together, to dispense straw that broke the camel’s back”. But in with safe words, but that only happens after the Leather scene at least two people have a long period of time together. Now I’ve to know your limits. First off the submisheard people say that “I’m the Top, why sive has to be in touch with his emotions should I take orders from the bottom?” and his body enough to be able to tell the Well, it’s very simple. You’re not the botdominant when he’s had enough, and the tom, and unless you want to switch places 26 Your weekly LGBT Gay Desert Guide. View our Free Digital Version on-line.

JERSEY’S JOURNAL by Jersey Shore Well, if you’ve been reading my column for a while and you have the memory much better than I do, you’ll know one of my personal mantras is “Because I can”. In a nut shell: Live your life and do what YOU want, Because YOU can! Now is the time for me to start practicing what I preach! Take care of MYSELF. Knowing that I come first, and not just in the bedroom. My health and wellbeing come first. My happiness and self-respect come first. I come first, because I can. I’m not being selfish. I’m being real. I am constantly thinking of others and it gets sickening when you get shit on. I don’t do scat! And don’t piss me off or on me. I don’t do water sports either! If I want to enjoy life, then back off and let me. i could be dead tomorrow and i wasted so much time with surgeries, health, wealth, and death, that this middle aged old fart wants to enjoy the simple life. Minus Paris and Nicole! There are enough drunken sluts around this town! I don’t need the competition. So, I’m working on my health, physically and mentally. Physical is starting to loosen up my body and get it moving, like the tin man in Oz. Squirt, squirt, here! Squirt, squirt, there!!! Starting small, but every little bit helps. Now for my mental health. I’m starting to feel human through medication. Now I must implement a positive attitude and start getting out and live my life to the fullest. It might sound 40
easy to most people, but when you are challenged with issues, you have to deal with that card you were dealt. Mine was a Queen of hearts, but the card was bent and ripped. Well, I have scotch tape and I’m going to gamble big. The Queen of hearts has never failed me. It’s the Joker that never needs to get drawn. Peace, Love, and YOU, Jersey Dragapalooza@aol.com Throw Back Thursday’s returns Aug. 4th with the 50th Anniversary of “The Sound of Music” Check out when I appear at Copa on Thursdays. and let someone take you to places you’re unwilling to go, use them. I don’t care how experienced you are you cannot tell what the submissive is feeling or experiencing. I’ve also heard that safe words stop the submissive from “exploring their limits”, and that their use by inexperienced bottoms stop the timid from reaching nirvana. To that I say, “Bullshit”. Sorry guys, the bottom always retains the right to control what is being done to them. Naturally you want them to get to the place we describe as “floating”, where the endorphins kick in and the physical rush begins, something like a runners high after they’ve “hit the wall” but keep on going. But, again, that’s their choice, not yours. If they want to stop, then stop. You can always explore why they wanted you to stop, and then the next time you play together you’ll have more information to better understand how to get them to expand their limits. If you don’t respect their safe words then you’ll lose their trust, and if you lose their trust the scene is over, forever. To be continued…

THAT IS FUNNY Oh, you’re straight? Well, so is spaghetti until it gets hot and wet. My friends say that I’m gay because I don’t like football. What a bunch of idiots. I’m gay because I like cock. Moses was leading his people through the desert for 40 years yelling hello GPS! can anyone get a signal. 4,153,237 people got married last year, not to cause any trouble but some one allowed a threesum. Politicians and diapers have one thing in common. They should both be changed regularly, and for the same reason.

THE LAST WORD by George W. Zander Equality California Institute and Transgender Law Center are launching a huge project together. The coalition will implement a statewide public education campaign to combat widespread public misunderstanding about transgender and gender nonconforming people and the issues they face. It will also include other LGBT and civil rights organizations as well as groups serving communities of color and the faith community. The effort is not part of any political or legislative campaign and exists solely to change attitudes towards transgender Californians through research and education. While the past few years have seen a tremendous increase in visibility for the transgender community, that hasn’t necessarily been matched by a rise in public understanding. Unfortunately, this gap in public understanding contributes to the lethal dangers faced by members of the transgender community daily. The transgender community has come under increasing fire from right-wing activists across the country, facing a spate of bills and initiatives in various states targeting the right of transgender people to use public facilities corresponding to their gender identity. In California, right-wing activists last month filed a ballot initiative that would require a person to “use facilities in accordance with their biological sex in all government buildings.” Anyone offended by the presence of a gender non-conform-
ing person in a restroom could sue that individual or the government for damages. The campaign aims to introduce the public to transgender people and the issues they face in a number of settings. California’s diverse communities and prioritizing communities most impacted, including transgender and gender non-conforming communities, immigrants, youth, low income and communities of color are hugely impacted. It will conduct research and outreach across California and work with community and faith leaders in a field campaign to conduct door-to-door, oneon-one conversations. The campaign will also identify and train spokespeople – including transgender youth and adults, their friends, families, employers and educators – to tell their stories on air, in print and through social media. We will be contacting our local community in the Desert to continue this project. More to come. Follow Equality California’s work at www. eqca.org And of course, be sure you are registered to vote. Stop by Village Fest’s Desert Stonewall Democrats booth in front of LULU!!
