LEATHER REALM by Dave Murdock Before I begin this weeks reflection I want to hand out kudos’ to a few people. First and foremost to Clifton Tatum, Mr. Palm Springs Leather, who, along with his celebrity list of hearthrobs, his entertainers and co-emcee, raised $7400 for LGBT Youth at the Copa on July 5. That brings Cliff ’s total to $17,000 that he’s raised so far for LGBT youth. That’s why I love my Leather brothers and sisters. They usually understand that you get by giving. Next on the list is Chill and the indefatigable Tommy Hamilton for hosting their first bi-weekly Leather Party. This one featured the current International Mr. Leather, Patrick Smith from LA, and a hairy chest contest. I heard it was a blast (I was out of town and couldn’t go) so follow my lead and put July 25th on your calendar so you don’t miss the next one. Back to topic, I’m sure you’ve heard the term Old Guard before, usually in reference to someone of my advanced age (feel free to disagree with me vehemently <grin>), who supposedly had all of these rigid rules and regulations and who, according to a few young pups, have forgotten how to have a good time because they’re too rigid and all caught up in SSC (safe, sane and consensual play). OK, I’m guilty of the latter. Yes, I promote safe play because I want us all to be around for the next play date. Guilty as charged, so sue me. Just because something makes you feel good doesn’t give you or anyone the right to do it. 26

But in reality I’m NOT (gasp) Old Guard, and I’ve been in the scene over 33 years. In fact, back then in the bronze age of the Leather Scene, I don’t think that anyone had even heard the term, I know I hadn’t. In fact, let me dispel a myth here. There is no Old Guard, and there never has been one. Yes, you hear about it, and I’ve probably used the term myself in this column to illustrate a point. But when I sat down to think about the topic I realized that I could not pinpoint where the term originated. Online research, including the Leather Archives and Museum, just sort of muddied the water, no real definitive answers there either, so I went to Larry Townsend’s seminal work “The Leatherman’s Handbook”, written in 1972. Guess what I found. There was no mention of a rigid code of behavior! And this was written at a time when all things Leather were becoming codified. Think about it. The beginning of organized Leather, dating from the late 40’s and early 50’s to 1972 covered a span of only 20+ years. In the timeline of history that’s less than a blink. Satyr’s, the oldest continually operating gay motorcycle club wasn’t even founded until 1954! So if Mr. Townsend hadn’t noticed any rigid rules that needed to be talked about by the time he wrote his book they probably didn’t exist, period. To further illustrate the point, I’m a member of Avatar Club Los Angeles, one of the oldest gay S/m clubs in Continued on page 41

JERSEY’S JOURNAL by Jersey Shore This week I lost some weight and had some guys checking me out. Last week I gained some and weight and no one looked at me. Last month I was much thinner than today. I almost got laid! I would have if I lost an extra 5 pounds. Same person, but just thinner. Goes to show you what a vain world we live in. You can change that! Stop thinking like an idiot. What makes me laugh is the people causing all the judgement ain’t all that themselves. Perfection doesn’t exist. No one is perfect. That is probably the only perfect fact, that no one is perfect, so stop picking people apart for petty reasons. I don’t have to say that it’s what’s inside that counts, but I am thinking I should. You all seem to forget that. I remember being at a bar and this “hot” guy walks in and like a magnet all the boys flock to him. It doesn’t seem to matter if he’s an asshole because his is all tight and pretty. I can go on and on about personality and humanity, but you don’t care about that. He’s hot. I am often asked what my “type” is. My type starts with kindness and politeness, and as for physicality, I don’t have a set type. Everyone is different and it could be the difference of a warm inviting smile or a nice set of eyes. I like non conformist body types. I find the hairless, perfectly worked out bodies, boring. I love exploring a man’s body and finding surprises within each crack and crevice. 40

So to sum it up...Perfect is boring. Realistic is an adventure. Life is an adventure. Peace, Love, and Adventures, Jersey

the country. Avatar educates interested parties on fetishes and lifestyle. In all the time that I’ve been a member I have not once heard anyone say anything about any rigid Old Guard code of behavior. Yes, there are protocols, most of the arising out of the fact that many of the organizing members of the early motorcycle clubs were returning servicemen so they were comfortable with “Sir, yes Sir”, and the like. I think that what people mean when they use the term Old Guard is a set of behavior that includes playing nicely with others, helping one another and playing safely. Things you learned in kindergarten. They’re really only the same codes that grease the wheels of society and they are a part of the Leather scene because it was considered good manners to play (and live) that way, and not just in the Leather scene. Not all of us can be into Leather 24/7. Most of us have to work or go to school, all of us go food shopping, eat and sleep. So the next time you hear someone referred to as Old Guard, feel free to challenge the statement. Maybe, in today’s society, some have chosen to bypass manners (read protocol) as too cumbersome or boring. That’s their choice. Call a spade a spade, but don’t call it Old Guard! If you have any questions about the Leather scene, or would like to see an article about a specific topic or event, please send an email to LeatherRealm@gmail.com.

Transgender Notes

Pentagon to Lift Transgender Ban in the Military In a statement, Secretary of Defense Ash Carter said We have transgender soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines — real, patriotic Americans — who I know are being hurt by an outdated, confusing, inconsistent approach that’s contrary to our value of service and individual merit,” he said. The Williams Institute at UCLA estimates that 15,500 transgender people currently serve in the armed forces.

THE LAST WORD by George W. Zander Caitlin Jenner accepted the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at ESPY on Wednesday night and it blew the world away. Most were in tears when she received a standing ovation from many of the biggest most well known sport stars. Her speech was ten minutes long and it will absolutely be the most well known and crucial public outing since Ellen screamed “I’m gay.” The huge message to the workld, was this, “Trans people deserve something vital, they deserve your respect. From that respect comes a more compassionate community. My plea tonight is one join in making this one of your issues as well. “OK girls, I get it. You get the shoes, the hair, the makeup, it was exhausting. And the fashion police, please be kind on me. I am new at this.” This amazing scene will live for a long time in folks memories. All of us who watch this were mezmorized and moved by the unfolding scene.

we had a spokesperson like this woman who would speak for all of us. “But the real truth is, before a few months ago, I had never met anybody else who was trans, who was like me. I had never met a trans person, never. Now, as you just saw, I dealt with my situation on my own in private, and that turned this journey into an already incredible education. “It’s been eye-opening, inspiring, but also frightening. All across this country, right now, all across the world, at this very moment, there are young people coming to terms with being transgender. They’re learning that they’re different, and they are trying to figure out how to handle that, on top of every other problem that a teenager has. If you have not watched, please do. And pass this on to folks who still need education!!! Cheers to all!!!

There were nay sayers and disenters as one would expect. Some said this should be honoring current athletes and do not mix “politcs” with this show. There were some nasty blogs out there as well. Those of us in the LGB community all remember the taunts and the bullying...and none of us will ever forget this and all wish George W.
