Traveler

A Guide To Getting Out Of Town This week: Idyllwild, CA

It is often thought that the area surrounding Palm Springs is a barren, desolate sand-filled landscape filled with palm trees and surrounded by mountains. That the wilderness of the northern states and parks, where trees stand tall and the air is crisp and cold, are things that can only be seen in those very places. But alas, there is a getaway just around the mountain bend. It’s a tiny little sleepy mountain town known as Idyllwild, and it’s somewhere you can escape the desert heat, if only for a couple of nights. Coming from the northeast, it felt like a bit like home. Everything seems to move at a slower pace, and there’s none of the bustling nightlife that you can find in Palm Springs. In fact, everything seems to completely shut down after around 8 PM, as if time were to stop and pick up in the wee morning hours. It’s a place where hikers and out-of-towners can feel welcome all the same. There are many little fireside inns and villas peppered about, but we were graciously given the chance to stay at the Bluebird Cottage Inn (whose ad you can find on page 44). Offering both lodges and cabins, we managed to score the Falcon, which came with its own fireplace, kitchen, and Jacuzzi-like bathtub, complete with jets to make your bath feel that much better. The first thing we did once we arrived was lament on how ill prepared we were to stay. If only we had known of the amenities, we could have brought along steaks for the grill outside and copious amounts of bubble solution for the fancy bath. Next time, we said. In town, there’s hardly a shortage of places to visit. The fort springs to mind, with all sorts of stores selling everything from moccasins and boots, to

6

jewelry and stuffed-animal cuddly bears, to even cigars and candy, and even a store devoted mainly to all sorts of jerky and salsas. It’s a menagerie of places that don’t seem to fit into any similar sort of niche, yet co-exist in the realm all the same. On the main drag, there are restaurants offering up world famous burgers (what restaurant doesn’t have a world famous burger, anyhow?) and a tiny little one-movie theatre straight out of a Stephen King novel. We decided to try out one of the burger joints, the Lumber Mill, and if their burgers weren’t world famous, they were at least some of the best we had enjoyed in quite some time. Everyone inside was chatty and welcoming, the type of small town hospitality that only seems to exist in movies. Yet it seemed that a few of the more interesting locales were hidden off to the wayside. The Fairway Market has prices that

are closer to your local supermarket’s fair and its selection far more vast. If you want something a bit out of the ordinary, you can always swing up to the Funky Bazaar. Far off the beaten path but not too far that you can’t even find the place, it is three stories of oddities, surprises, and plenty of freaky yet elegant art. You’ll be led on your tour by Peter, the owner, who’s just as quirky as the building he runs. Though the “girl’s room,” featuring dolls straight from your worst nightmares, is one of the things that makes this place stand out, it’s the openness to art that really brings it to the forefront. Peter mentioned how the Bazaar is a haven for artists that don’t fit into the norm of the mainstream, and the pieces on display merely reflected as such. It was inspiring, as well as a bit harrowing, which came from a shirtless portrait of singer Iggy Pop skewed through what seemed to be a magnifying glass. It is art, though, so it’s always up to interpretation of the viewer. Maybe you’ll have a different idea on it. And if you are into art, there’s always Dore’s Mountain Art Gallery, with his famous metal art installations. Just make sure to set up an appointment to visit before you venture over. Above all else, though, the one thing that’s very easy to forget is that the views are absolutely spectacular. Driving along these winding roads, one is awash with the wonder and

beauty of what feels like an anomaly in the desert area. Lush greenery and stunning scenery allow for just having your breath taken away merely by stopping along the side of the road to snap some pics. At night, everything shuts down, and one can see the stars sparkle amongst a clear, unfettered sky. Just beware of traveling out at night. My other was terrified awake at 2:30 in the morning by a pack of what sounded like coyotes howling and scattering about, a sound they likened to “the screams of the souls of demon children.” So you might want to bring earplugs and make sure the deadbolt is securely fastened, just in case you’re not into encountering that sort of thing. If you’re dying to escape the triple-digit temperatures of the summer, and the idea of fighting the multitude of tourists in Big Bear or the insanity of highways, skyscrapers, and smog that is the greater Los Angeles area, you could do worse than a jaunt through Banning up Highway 243. And if you stop in any of these wonderful places, don’t forget to mention that the DDG sent you! Let us know if you want to see more! (Photos by E.F. Johnson)

TRUE WEST “I wanted to write a play about double nature, one that wouldn’t be symbolic or metaphorical or any of that stuff. I just wanted to give a taste of what it feels like to be two-sided. It’s a real thing, double nature. I think we’re split in a much more devastating way than psychology can ever reveal. It’s not so cute. Not some little thing we can get over. It’s something we’ve got to live with.” Sam Shepard Sam Shepard’s TRUE WEST, like most of his works, is inspired by myths of American life and popular culture. TRUE WEST is about the sibling rivalry between two estranged brothers. Austin is a college educated Hollywood screenwriter working on a screenplay while house sitting for his mother. Enter his older brother, Lee, a drifter and a thief who has been living in the desert. Instead of robbing the neighborhood, Lee steals Austin’s production deal with a pitch about an idea for a western causing Austin to lose his mind. The only problem is Lee can’t type. By the end the brothers have switched roles and nearly killed each other, but were never closer. Directed by Mark Blanchard and Starring Sean Kanan (The Bold and the Beautiful, Karate Kid III); David Steen (Django Unchained, Resevoir Dogs); Tristan Rogers (Young and the Restless, GH’s Robert Scorpio) TRUE WEST runs May 30th thru June 8th Ticket Prices: $35 and $40 for VIP seating. Performances run Friday and Saturday at 8:00pm; Sunday at 2:00pm. Get your Tickets Now! CALL THE BOX OFFICE TODAY (760) 323-5123 One of our most endearing plays. it hits on all levels of family, the sins of the father, Sibling rivalry, and locations, set from 50 miles west of Palm Springs through the Mojave Desert, a postmodern adaptation of Cain and Abel. But with a twist, when brothers’ personalities have taken over each other in a deadly game, and mom’s old home will never be the same. Or just if you hate your brother, you will love this play.

COOK’S NOOK Summer is coming up faster than you can possibly realize. So what does that mean? Why, summer foods, of course! You see, some foods are best when they’re in season, and though things like strawberries grow all-year round, you really want them during the summer, when they’re ripe and fresh for the taking. Some other ones to be on the lookout for during the hot months: - Watermelons are best when they’re heavy and they feel right. - Summer squash...well, the name does say it all. - Apricots are big during the summer months, so keep an eye on your local farmer’s markets. There are many others that are best from May to August, so your list might be more expansive than ours. Just remember what works and what doesn’t for your tastes!

FROM THE DESK OF THE PUBLISHER by Will Paige We have some great pictures to share from the community this weekend. Adrian is a photographer, and he’s doing a better job at photography as he goes along. We hope you all enjoy them. We have CCBC, The Barracks, Arenas Road, Legends of Palm Springs, Oscars and the Veterans for Peace Memorial Day lunch. So, let me start out with a personal story, of humor, failure and lessons learned. I am sure you may have heard how I flubbed the pledge of allegiance to the flag at the Veterans for Peace Memorial Day lunch. To be honest, my generation was probably the first to have the state mandate to be optional in high school. Also, there is that troublesome verse that I don’t need to get into, and I was preoccupied, as it was not on my agenda. Plus, I was working the projector to have Congressmen Ruiz’s videotaped message played. Also, the sun was in my eyes. Fortunately, it’s always best to sit next to Rev Kev, who chimed in for me and saved the day, or we all would have been saying the lord’s prayer, as that was all I had in mind. My take away from all this is that you just keep moving. Mistakes happen, and it’s all part of life and growing. Oh, and many thanks to Rev Kev! Speaking of the Veterans for Peace, it was a great turn out, and we had many speakers that are directly involved with the quality of life for all of us, as well as all people that have been oppressed. We are talking about people that represent you, in state and local government. As Greg Pettis, a councilman in Cathedral City and chairman of the Riverside County

Transportation Commission, told us, it would be nice to see more local and state politicians at this event that are willing to reach out to the people that attend this event. Keynote Speaker State Assembly Member V. Manuel Perez spoke of his commitment to our lager community, both in the past and the future. Perez is the Democratic challenger to Riverside County Supervisor John Benoit and hoping to replace him. I know we all say no politician cares, but if you meet and talk to them you will see how much they care, not just by words but through action as well. And they are the people that you may need some day, because not all politicians will fight for us. Our needs continue to be many, and fighters few. People around the nation and the world are still being oppressed without a voice, save small free press like ours and the other great locals, both gay and straight. Nothing impresses me more than when I see a great LGBT story in the Coachella Valley weekly without being sensationalized or shocking. It’s just another new story, like it should be. Here are but a few stories shared at this Memorial Day luncheon: Mario Lazcano of “Comité Latino,” who accepted the VFP Special Achievement Award 201 on behalf of all of the members of Comite Latino and the work they do. Lazcano, from Mexico City, was granted amnesty in 1986 under President Ronald Reagan, as were nearly 3 million undocumented immigrants in the United States. And that could have been

Continued from page 25 enough for him. His fight was over, and he could sit back and enjoy the American way of life. But he did not. Instead, he became an activist so that another family could live in a nice house and their children could be wellfed and well-dressed, with the opportunity and stability to go to school and have better futures than we did. And the story of Immigration is a story of Memorial Day, as many Latino men and women, documented and not documented, have served this country, fought in wars, and sacrificed their lives. As a person of Portuguese decent and a member in good standing in the LGBT community, Veterans for Peace supporter, and purveyor of marijuana reform, I have learned some things. We need to stand behind groups like Comité Latino and, from a human rights issue, one equally important as we learned from the current marijuana movement. When you make things legal, you remove the temptation to exploit people, from threats of deportation, driving legally and all the other activities of our current failed immigration system. As one that has never heard a valid argument for deportation beyond criminal activity, for a path to citizenship, change is a must. I never rode in a car with Martin Luther King and Ambassador to the United Nations Andrew Young, but this year’s winner of the Morris Kight Peace Award, Father Ned Reidy of Pathfinder Church, has. Although I had never personally met Father Ned, he is a bit of a hero to me as a catholic boy. I call him the last heretic, and am hoping to get an interview, as I wrote about it years ago. Now, I profess I don’t yet have the whole story,

WEEKLY GUIDE TO THE STARS ARIES March 20 - April 18: Sometimes a cloudy day can have a silver lining. Like when it rains when it’s still sunny out? That’s totally weird. TAURUS April 19 - May 19: Not everything is as it seems. I mean, you could simply be a figment of my imagination! If only I can learn to turn metal into gold... GEMINI May 20 - June 19: Don’t judge a book by its cover. Unless it’s written by authors like the guy that did “the Da Vinci Code.” You know it’s gonna be bad then. CANCER June 20 - July 21: The early bird catches the worm. But that doesn’t mean you need to wake up at 3:50 in the morning and make so much dang noise!

40

LEO July 22 - Aug. 21: Those living in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. I mean...duh! Stop breaking all the windows, Steve! VIRGO Aug. 22 - Sept. 21: Everyone unto their own. You know, whatever that means. Do you... happen to know what it means...? I totally do. Just seeing if you do. LIBRA Sept. 22 - Oct. 21: An apple a day keeps the doctor away. I mean, unless you’re eating rotten apples, in which case...what’s wrong with you?!? You need to cut that out right now! SCORPIO. Oct. 22 - Nov. 20: Honesty is the best policy...if you want to get in trouble. When someone breaks something, blame it on Jeff. Always Jeff.

SAGITTARIUS Nov. 21-Dec. 20: There’s no point in crying over spilled milk. But you better clean it up. That’s how we get ants! CAPRICORN Dec. 21-Jan. 18: Teaching a man to fish can feed him forever, as long as he’s fishing at the right lake. I think that’s how that goes. AQUARIUS Jan. 19 - Feb. 17: Good things come to those who wait. So you might as well sleep as long as you like. Everything will probably work itself out somehow. PISCES Feb. 18 - March 19: The worst a person can be is smarter than they are. So dumb it down a little for the normal folk, will ya, Professor Maths?

but I would compare his experience with the Roman Catholic Church identical to Galileo Galilei in 1633. But this was 1999, when his views on gender justice so shocked the Vatican that they called him on the carpet (the red one, I assume) and Father Ned Reidy left the church and opened Pathfinder Community of the Risen Christ, a Catholic faith community, a sacramental people, and open to all who are hungry for God. Not since medieval time has the world missed a good old fashion stake burning for the good of the church. And this was no exception. In the end Father Ned joined with Rev. Joni Miller pathfinder community of the Risen Christ. Today some still question Galileo’s outrageous assertion that the earth moved under our feet and zipped us around the sun as we should remember that somebody up there has a great sense of comedic timing.

JERSEY’S JOURNAL by Jersey Shore Well, I’ve kind of been slacking in the article department. I’ve been busy with shows, which isn’t a bad thing, but at the same time health issues pop up just to annoy you. Once you pass forty, I guess every bump and lump acts as the speed bumps of life. We do need to be reminded to take care of ourselves. Plus, I haven’t been feeling too creative these days. Usually my warped brain can spit out articles like porn stars spit out their paychecks. You can only preach so much while wondering if people are listening and learning. So, instead of preaching I am just going to talk. Hopefully you will get something out of this stoner’s cognitive mind. I’ve also had plenty of life experiences. A few life and death scenarios, in fact. Some of my past work experiences involve porn, sex shops, and bath houses. I’ve experienced celebrities in their rarest form. You name it, I’ve pretty much experienced it. I’m not saying I am better than anyone. I’ve just been there and done that.

Nothing bizarre fazes me these days. I am amazed at what shocks people, like nudity. We are born naked, and we have pretty much the same things under our clothes. Those said parts are used for biological experiments. Never mind all the porn you watch. I am around naked men all the time. I find that my brain gets desensitized. I act like I’m excited, but in reality it’s nothing new that I haven’t seen already. I guess my point is to lighten up. Unless it spits at you, it can’t hurt you. Peace, Love, and Experiences, Jersey
