We all know at least one of those places… they never advertise but they’re busy. Why? ‘Word of mouth’. People tell their friends, “You must try..” and the word spreads. In this monthly column, we spread the word further about the great-value nooks and crannies that we know about on Phuket.

Roxy Bar Phuket

5pm - 1am. Near Bangkok Bank on Phang Nga Rd. not far from the On On Hotel, Phuket Town A little, but well popular, bar in the middle of Phuket Town. Roxy brings you a fun atmosphere and fantastic food option with their interesting menu featuring Turkish, Western and Mexican food. With a large projector screen you can enjoy live sports and there's free pool and wi-fi. There's a quiz night every Wednesday. Happy Hours from 5 - 8pm every day, when all normal 'house' beers are just 50 baht a bottle.

The Cook Restaurant T

8am – 9pm. Closed on10th, 20th & 30th of each month. Phang Nga Rd. next to Sinthawee Hotel Serving Thai and western food as well as a selection of Thai style pizzas such as 'green curry' or 'tom yam goong'. Great food with reasonable prices as Thai dishes start from 35-40 baht. They also serve free fruit after your meal. Note the fit out is very basic.

Pruchic Bar & Restaurant

10am - 11pm. Maikhao Beach, near Holiday Inn Hotel Maikhao A small local family restaurant located near Holiday Inn Maikhao resort. In a truly beautiful natural setting, it offers tranquility and a cool breeze. There's some really tempting Thai food, including traditional Phuket dishes that comes with the kind of friendly and warm service that makes you feel you're at home.

N.C. Restaurant

Nakkerd Seaview Restaurant

7am - 5pm. Opposite Royal Phuket City on Phang Nga Rd. A one-stop shop for many cheap eats including Hokkien noodles, haw mok, kanom jeen any kind of rice dish, baked goods and sweets and excellent massaman curry. Deep fried crab meat balls served with plum dipping sauce are recommended. Their food is displayed in the counter so all you need to do is point at what you want. Opens in the morning and gets busy at lunch time.

8am – 7:30pm. Chao Fa Rd. East on the hillside near Big Buddha, almost at the top of the mountain The place is a tiny restaurant selling inexpensive tasty Thai food and cold drinks. A nice place to chill out after visiting the Big Buddha. The place offers you a fabulous seaview over Karon Beach. The yellow crab curry is wonderful.

Branch 1: Domestic Chiangmai Airport Branch 2: On Bypass Rd., Phuket

Kanokpan (Kwan) Pranveerapaiboon "I think I've already achieved my ambition. Now I just want to do the best I can everyday." When did you set up the business? We started The Twovillas Group in 2003, and we rebranded our business to 'The Attitude Club' this year. What was behind your decision to (a) set up a business in Phuket and (b) set up this particular business? My husband and I are from Phuket. Originally, he and his partner set up the architectural firm called 'Roof Co., Ltd'. They had 10 years' experience in designing resorts, hotels and residential homes and I had experience in the property business. In 2003, we had the opportunity to start a small project with two private pool villas in Saiyuan, hence the name 'Two Villas'. We continue to be successful with affordable pool villas. What were you doing before you set up the business? I used to work in the tourism industry then moved into the property business with a property development in Cherngtalay. What’s special / different about The Attitude Club? What are its unique points? It's the combination of design and value for money. We always develop new designs, offering a different product to the market. And we have offer excellent after-sales service together with a management team to take care the of the villas. Why would someone choose to use your product / service compared to your closest competition? The Attitude Club is a Thai developer with good references from 18 completed projects, and the quality guarantee for every unit. What do you think is important in running a business? Be honest with every one − yourself, your partners and employees and especially your clients. What are the main challenges as they relate to your role? Everyone is different and you have to find a way of working with this; you can't change other people but you can adjust yourself and compromise with others. …and what are the biggest difficulties you have to overcome? My own temper when I'm facing unexpected circumstances. What is your main target market? Property investors and the second home or retirement markets.

Marketing is obviously an important part of every business – what is your approach to marketing The Attitude Club to your target market? The best marketing is word of mouth. Good quality and after-sales service is an important part of our marketing strategy. Our approach to quality is recognised by the agents and is passed on by our clients to their friends. Of course, a good relationship with our property agents and other business partners is essential, too. What do you like most about what you do now? Designing creative marketing concepts and being a good boss. And what do you like least…? I enjoy and love every thing I do. Everything is valuable experience. I just can’t think of anything I like least. What do you (and the business) hope / expect to achieve within the next 3-5 years? We are already successful in property business and we expect to be successful in the hospitality business as well within the next fve years. What do you see as your biggest successes to date? The Attitude Club is one of the few local businesses that is well known in foreign market and amongst international agents. To what extent does the current global financial mess affect your business? Just a little bit. Phuket is an international destination for tourists and retirees. The property market is still strong in both retirement and investment markets. Is The Attitude Club involved in any CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) programmes? If so, please outline briefly. Yes, of course. We co-operate with government offices like Vachira Hospital and the Red Cross for blood donation. We also have a beach cleaning day every year, and one of our projects has the concept of “Organic Passion” to avoid the use of non-toxic materials. And we're implementing an organic garden for the project landscape. Also, in the Vegetarian Festival, we ran charity booth. Please give us an overview of your typical day ‘at work’. What tools (if any) do you use to schedule your time? Every day after work, I always plan my schedule for the next day. My smartphone helps me manage my schedule and alerts me in advance to what is on my schedule. How would you describe your leadership style? Honesty and kindness. What is your over-riding ambition at this stage in your life? I think I've already achieved my ambition. Now I just want to do the best I can every day.

h c a e B Kamala

rs e b m o c h c a e B r Bay of Bliss fo and Billionaires Welcome to the Phuket Hot List, our bi-monthly series that gives you an insider’s peek into the island scene. This month, we’re checking out the west-coast town of Kamala Beach, where the high life and a casual tropical vibe manage to co-exist in harmony.

Kamala Beach

Hot Properties In a year of screaming headlines of impeding global economic doom, the hills and headland that slice between Kamala and Patong continue to buzz with building activity, with everything from bamboo lookout huts to luxury condos and villas in the works. No amount of gloom can stem people’s desires for sea and sunset views, it seems. The six-bedroom Banyan Villa, the first completed villa in the Waterfall Cove estate along Kamala’s “Millionaire’s Mile” offers an impressive perch for those coveted views. Managed by Helix Property Services, Banyan began welcoming its first rental guests in October. It features live-in staff including a cook, an 18-metre infinity pool, four huge master bedrooms with Jacuzzi bathtubs and showers that open to the outdoors, plus all the bells and whistles for entertaining in style. There are only two other land plots in Waterfall Cove, one of which is under development while the third is still available for sale, price available upon application to Helix.

Novotel Phuket Kamala Bay

Along the same road, the Paradise Group – part of Hong Kong magnate Allan Zeman’s Lan Kwai Fong Group – is busy adding 13 more lavish villas to the Kamala headland. “Evolving from the sell-out success of 26 Andara Villas and 37 Andara Residences, a new phase has now been launched, Andara Signature Resort Villas, to meet the ever increasing demand from clients looking to invest in high-end resort managed property on the Island of Phuket,” said Jonathan James Gascoyne, Director Sales, Marketing & Development. Among the highlights of these four-bedroom luxury homes is a grand master bedroom pavilion with private reflecting pool. Prices range from 180 to 240 million baht on the seven remaining villas for sale. The villas are due to be complete in February 2014.

Kamala’s north end is seeing lots of building action, too, including the development of the Novotel Phuket Kamala Bay. Construction is well underway and it’s due to open in the first quarter of 2013. The modern-style resort will have 168 rooms and a range of facilities including a swimming pool, business centre, spa and pool bar “to meet the needs of both leisure and business travellers”. The Novotel sits on an absolute beachfront location where the sunset-seeking crowd is sure to flock. In September, the Bangkok Mass Transit System Public Co., Ltd. (BTS) quietly announced in one of its obligatory filings with the Stock Exchange of Thailand that it had sold off a huge chunk of land of 455 rai near the Novotel for a whopping 1.65 billion baht. The sale netted the company a tidy 385 million baht of extraordinary profit, according to The Nation newspaper. No reports revealed who bought the land (and emails to BTS were not returned), so this parcel of prime property will be one to watch in the coming months and years.

Hot Eats Vanilla Sky Bar & Lounge at the Cape Sienna resort is one of our favourite Phuket sunset cocktail spots, and its menu has just been revamped with more focus on value. The “small bites at small prices” tapas selections include a shrimp cocktail skewer, monkfish fillet in Thai herb and Vanilla's tiramisu, each at a price of 69 baht. The wine list, meanwhile, has nearly 30 labels of wine for less than 1,400 baht net. And the fabulous sunset views? Still free! 1. Viva Flowers Shop & Coffee Cafe, 2. Viva Flowers Shop & Coffee Cafe, 3. Vanilla Sky Bar & Lounge, 4. Vanilla Sky Bar & Lounge Tapas

Skyla's Beach Bar self-evident

Skyla’s Beach House has a happy, blissed-out ambiance, and no wonder given its picturesque location right on the beach at Kamala’s north end. The Skyla crew happily defy the lackadaisical surfer-dude stereotype: on our visit we were warmly greeted as old friends and the service was swift! Every food item on the menu is 100 baht, from sandwiches to Thai dishes, and there’s a good selection of beer and cocktails. We came only for lunch, but those wishing to stand-up paddle or surf can grab one of the boards stacked up at the back of the restaurant. Lessons are on offer, too.

The Viva Flowers Shop & Coffee Café on Rim Hat Road caught our eye for its whimsical sign, and the place is just as cheerful as its name. After climbing an insanely narrow staircase to the covered rooftop café we enjoyed a sweet, creamy latte with a hint of cinnamon. On the ground floor is the flower shop where there are also some funky clothes and gifts including handmade floralthemed cards on sale. We were charmed by the friendliness of the staff, especially when, after waiting a few extra minutes for our lattes, we were reassured with a smile and told, “Sorry, we’re so busy.” We were the only ones there!

Hot Pursuits 1. Oasis Royal Thai Spa, 2. Oasis Royal Thai Spa

Well off the beach but as soothing as a sunset is the Oasis Royal Thai Spa. It’s not the cheapest place to get a massage in Kamala but certainly one of the most stylish and serene. Oasis specialises in lengthy two- to five-hour packages and if you go as a pair you can enjoy two for the price of one. The most elaborate treatment is the Seaside Sensation, a five-hour session at 7,500++ baht that combines a steam-sauna session, a two-hour massage, facial, body scrub and wrap and a dip in the pool. Hearing that Kamala had become the lawn bowls capital of Phuket we went to investigate and found the Kamala Lawn Bowling Club tucked away down a quiet lane behind Phuket FantaSea. Here, we a met a fun group of mates out playing on a sunny afternoon – their quips and jokes were being rolled out more rapidly than the bowls. The club’s social scene is clearly a big draw, with a 150-baht barbecue every Friday and the bar’s beer-o’clock runs for a generous three hours: from 5pm to 8pm all beer is 50 baht only. To play, the cost is 350 baht per person or 200 baht for members. The pitch is well-maintained and lit by floodlights after dark to allow for playing in the cooler evening hours.

Recipe

Seared Tuna Loin with baby zucchini and soy pearls Ingredients • 150 gm tuna loin • 80 gm baby zucchini

• 1 pc roma tomato • 10 gm lemon zest

For pearls • • • •

1 ltr canola oil 2 gm agar-agar 125 ml water Finely grated zest of 1 lemon or yuzu

• 3 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon or yuzu juice • Sugar (optional) • 3 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce

Working rapidly, drip small or larger droplets into the cold oil. As they sink into the oil they will harden, forming small pearls. If the mixtures in the bowls start to gel before you have time to use them, reheat and they will turn to liquid again.

Method For the Pearls Pour the oil into a plastic container with an opening wide enough to accommodate a slotted spoon, then cover or close tightly and place in the freezer overnight. Combine the agar-agar and water in a small saucepan and bring to a boil over high heat, stirring until the agar-agar is dissolved. Divide between two small bowls, to which the different flavourings will be added. Add the lemon zest and then lemon and a little sugar to taste, if desired, to one of the bowls, stirring to mix well. For a bright yellow colour, add artificial colouring or a little turmeric, if desired.

Remove them from the oil with a slotted spoon. Repeat with the soy mixture. Place in a plastic container and in the fridge until ready to use.

For the Tuna Season the tuna with salt and pepper. Heat a pan and add a small amount of oil. Place the tuna into the pan and cook on each side for about three minutes. Remove from the pan and let it rest on a warm plate. Slice the zucchini into strips and place into a pan of boiling water for two minutes. Remove and place into a bowl of Ice water to stop the zucchini from cooking more.

Add soy sauce to the mixture in the second bowl, stirring to mix well.

To serve

Allow both to cool a little.

Arrange the zucchini on the base of the plate. Slice your tuna and arrange onto the zucchini.

Remove the oil from the freezer. After a few minutes, when the oil is getting transparent but is still quite thick and cold, at a temperature of no more than 20 degrees, start making the pearls. Transfer the lemon mixture to a large syringe.

Drizzle some of the pearls over the top of the tuna. Add a few sprigs of coriander for the burst of flavour. Garnish with tomato hearts and lemon zest.

Patong Seafood

International

Baluchi

Indian

Take a journey into the home of real Thai food! Patong Seafood Restaurant was the first seafood restaurant to open in the then village-like Patong. It has changed very little from those days except for a major refurbishment after the 2004 tsunami in which major damage was sustained.

Baluchi is located in the heart of Patong and in Karon yet the relaxed atmosphere of both restaurants with soft background Indian music, creates a great ambience to relish a hearty meal with your family or to entertain your friends or clients.

The restaurant was rebuilt as it was in original Thai style with open dining area and a high circular design ceiling. Only the freshest seafood is brought straight from the boat and market to give you the finest selections, which are on display – chilled and ready to eat. The kitchens at Patong Seafood Restaurant are a place to behold, where their chefs with simply so many years of experience, prepare your seafood and other Thai delicacies to perfection.

They take pride in using only authentic and fresh Indian spices, freshly ground in their kitchen and fresh, not frozen, meat. Homemade paneer (cottage cheese) and yoghurt, tandoori kebabs, naan and rotis, Mughlai curries and the best Indian long grain basmati rice dishes are just some of the specialties which their Indian master chef serves daily. One can taste the most mouth-watering tandoori kebabs in town, not to mention the variety of breads baked freshly in the tandoor or a delicious variety of prawn, chicken, mutton or vegetable biryani.

The first thing that you will notice are the friendly staff. The smiles, the attentiveness and the helpfulness in making your choice are something you will appreciate and you will then know why many visitors and locals come back time and time again to enjoy this real taste of Thailand.

People Profile

Claude Sauter and Celine Masson Claude Sauter, General Manager of the Panwa Beach Resort Phuket, and Celine Masson, founder of Siam Indigo restaurant, are well known as one of Phuket’s most charismatic expat couples. Here, they reveal how their longing for an Asian adventure led them to Phuket, where they’ve lingered on for nearly two decades. Where are you from? Claude: Switzerland. Celine: France. When did you first come to Phuket? Claude: Celine and I have been together since meeting at a Swiss ski resort in 1990. We were living in Paris and we had the idea to move to Asia, so we started looking for work. I was hired as the F&B manager at the Cape Panwa Hotel and arrived on Phuket in January 1994; Celine came seven months later. Celine: Not long after I arrived, I met Khun Wallee Pachantabutr at the Cabana Resort (now the Impiana Phuket Cabana Resort & Spa) in Patong, who took me in and hired me to help with public relations. She’s a special woman in my life – I’ve learned a lot from her. We lived in Cape Panwa so it was challenging to drive to Patong in my small Nissan NV. I remember we put a sandbag in the back of it so I could make it up the hill. What convinced you to stay in Phuket? Can you tell us more about your life here? Claude: In 1998, we decided to return to Switzerland. I went to Lausanne and Celine was in Zurich. We survived for one winter. Then we went back to Phuket, just for a holiday. We’d lived in Phuket but had never been there on holiday before. It was then that we realized: Phuket is nice! We flew back at the end of November that year and both started working at the Cabana. But after five years of working at the same place we decided, never again! Later, I went to work at the Kamala Bay Terrace. Celine left the Cabana in August 2004, and that same year I moved back to the Cape Panwa Hotel. We seem to have chosen a fortuitous time to leave those jobs, since both the Kamala Bay Terrace and the Cabana were destroyed in the December 2004 tsunami. Celine: After I left the Cabana resort, Claude convinced me that it was time to do something on my own, and at the same time an architect friend of mine came to me to ask, “What about your dream?” After spending a year walking around Phuket Town looking for the perfect venue I finally found a shop along Phang Nga Road, which was at the time was a travel agency with cheap rooms for rent upstairs. I signed a contract and one week later I found out I was pregnant. After an extensive restoration, we opened Siam Indigo bar and restaurant in 2006. My daughter and my dream restaurant were welcomed into the world within weeks of one another. Tell us more about the Panwa Beach Resort & Siam Indigo. Celine: Siam Indigo serves Thai and fusion cuisine in an historic Phuket Town shophouse that’s been designed in a bright, contemporary style. The beautiful artwork of local artists hangs on the walls, which are always changing because our guests often buy them! We’ve just started a mingling night every Friday, when every dish and cocktail is 100 baht, and in high season we’ll have a resident DJ. Claude: The Panwa Beach Resort was a Novotel for 10 years, and now it’s under management by Marco Polo of Hong Kong. It’s currently being expanded and renovated into a more “active” resort with 200 rooms, a spa, conference facilities, a gym and a kids’ club. We expect the renovation to be complete by March 2013.

Where do your kids go to school? Our daughter and son, aged three, are at Headstart International Phuket. We’re very happy with this school. It’s run with a lot of heart and soul. Whereabouts do you live in Phuket? We live in a condominium in Cape Panwa. It’s easy for both of us to get to work from here and we love living in Cape Panwa. Where are your favourite places to go in Phuket? We like to spend time with our family and meet with good friends. In the low season, it’s brunches. In high season, it’s beaches. Are you involved in any local charities, clubs or associations? Claude: I’m the current president of the Phuket and South Thailand chapter of Skål International, the biggest tourism association in the world with 20,000 members. In Phuket there are about 60 members. It set up a fund to help about 20 children in Khao Lak and Rawai who were affected by the tsunami, and we continue to give donations of about 8,000 baht per child per year. We’re also doing programmes together with the Phuket Has Been Good to Us foundation and we hope to initiate more partnerships with other associations in Phuket to help society and the environment. What do you like most about living in Phuket? The quality of life. Living on an island is quite nice. We’ve considered moving to other places like Bali, but when we started looking at houses, schools, etc, we realised that back in Phuket we’re spoiled. Switzerland is well organised, and Phuket is a mess by comparison. But if we moved to Switzerland then we’d be back in a rigid system. Anyway, it’s not the place that makes you happy, it’s what you do. For our personal and professional life Phuket has a good balance. What's the most difficult thing about living here? We have no regrets about living here. Some people complain that there’s a lack of culture in Phuket but it’s not true. Sometimes, however, it’s not so accessible. You might find out about an event three days after it happened. Some expats find living abroad to be a strain on their family life. What’s your secret to having a successful marriage in Phuket? Celine: We’re not perfect but at least we talk, and we listen. We give each other our freedom but we’ve also told each other, “I can be anywhere as long as it’s with you.” Claude: Maybe it’s love.

Spa

Lemongrass House To visit this home of award-winning spa oils, creams, soaps and so many other exquisite products is a delight. The aromas are enchanting. At Lemongrass, you can enjoy a spa treatment to sample and choose from their huge range, then take home your choice to enjoy at your leisure. They even have a great range of kid’s spa products.

Bobby Duchowny studied aromatherapy – a healing art that promotes massage, when combined with specific herb and spice oils, as a method to reduce stress, boost energy and heal certain physical ailments – at the American Aromatherapy Association. Some years ago while on holiday in Thailand, he visited an organic farm in Petchaboon province and became interested in the natural healing properties of Thai herbs and spices. “I was particularly attracted to lemon grass as it was used in many popular Thai foods, as a medicine for stomach disorders and even as a repellent for mosquitoes,” he recalls. Bobby used lemon grass as his signature herb to create a line of essential oils, face and body creams, shower gels and bath crystals, which he and his wife Palita sold at Bangkok’s world-famous Weekend Market. What started, several years ago, as a modest enterprise has blossomed into a successful operation offering over 90 oils and a wide range of body care products through many outlets, as well as supplying many of Thailand’s top resorts and spas with aromatherapy oils. “Our advantage is that we produce the freshest spa products and our stock is never kept longer than three months; using fresh spa products can be likened to eating fresh food rather than processed food.”

Based on his years of experiences at some of the top spas in Southeast Asia, Bobby has developed a full line of healthy skin care products. For example, his hydrating face and body creams have 25 per cent aloe vera, white orchid and cucumber extracts. And he’s developed a revitalizing mineral muscle soak made from Andaman Sea salt crystals, blended with white orchid and chamomile extracts, to help draw out impurities and soothe and revive tense muscles. “People are sensitive to different scents at different times of day. It’s a good idea to get a variety of essential oils and experiment with what smells and feels good to you,” he says. “Our aromatherapy massage and body oils can be either uplifting or calming to the spirit. They’re carefully balanced handblended oils created by adding pure essential oils to nourishing, vitamin E enriched, sweet almond and jojoba base oils. Lemongrass has won many awards, including Condé Nast Hot List 2007, and has been featured in several top magazines, including Time Magazine’s “Best of Asia”. According to Time, “If you want to smell like no one else, try mixing a selection from the more than 90 natural scents at Lemongrass House.” Lemongrass House is located in Cherngtalay, Surin Beach and Chalong, where you can buy their full range of spa products at modest prices, making perfect gifts for friends and family who can enjoy the aromatic scents of Asia in the privacy of their homes – no matter where in the world they live. Spa

The Royal Spa To experience The Royal Spa is to feel the true beauty of nature and reflect on the power of body, mind and spiritual connections.

The Royal Spa and Health Club In the heart of bustling Phuket Town lies a quiet haven of heavenly peace. With the continuous sounds of water, trickling, bubbling and steaming, and with the sweet fruity scents that fill the air, the being is enticed into a flowing stillness of body and mind. The Royal Spa and Health Club is a popular tropical day spa with both locals and visitors alike, which is managed by the Royal Spa Development and Management Company. With an excellent reputation in the spa development industry through its experience and attention to detail, the Royal Spa and Health Club offers a distinctly personal experience. Of the signature treatments, the Royal Stone Therapy is one that is particularly interesting. The Hot Stone massage technique, founded 5000 years ago, uses black volcanic stones, which are heated and placed on the body, producing a profound effect, stilling the mind and easing the body. Unlike many of the high-end spa complexes on the island, which market themselves exclusively to tourists, the reasonable prices and relaxed but professional staff at the Royal Spa, means that many local Thais, as well as tourists, are beginning to use the spa. This has helped to erase the often stiff, and over-formal atmosphere at many of Phuket’s spa resorts, giving the Royal Spa an ambience of authentic relaxation and pleasure. All the therapists working at the Royal Spa have been trained at the in-house 'Phuket Spa Academy', established in 2004, to provide a comprehensive spa training course. The curriculum and assessments provide a measurement of therapist expertise and knowledge within the Thai spa industry. Since then, the Royal Spa Development and Management Company have provided comprehensive and professional spa management, and development programs, for spa retreats throughout Thailand. Their aim is to provide a standard of service and expertise throughout the Thai spa industry, to ensure a high quality of service and standard of treatment, throughout Thailand. It truly offers the ‘one stop services for Thai spa business’ and a quality of relaxed professionalism, rarely found in luxury spa resorts. Right now The Royal Spa have 12 branches that are managed in resorts in Patong, Kata, Karon, Panwa, Ao Chalong and Phuket Town and you are welcome to experience our spas with us anytime. As a special for our 8th year anniversary, we offer 'BUY ONE GET ONE FREE' value.

Spa

Sukko Cultural Spa Sukko means "Beyond Happiness". My first feeling when I stepped through the impressive gates of the Sukko spa was, "I’m in paradise". The Sukko staff are dressed beautifully in traditional Thai style and the spa design, influenced by the ancient Siamesee capital, creates a haven of calm yet regal serenity. I felt I had left all my troubles behind.

Chilled out by the soothing background music, my mind was filled with a peaceful wellbeing as I enjoyed the warm traditional welcome (again from Sukko culture) of the ‘Flower Floating Ritual’ – similar to ‘Loy Kratong’, where the idea is to float away past stresses and wish for luck and joy from that moment on. A variety of 40 spa treatments – prepared by Sukko's certified Thai Herbalist and based on ancient Thai medical theory – is offered at Sukko, in packages lasting from 2 hours to 4 hours. Each package has a specific purpose and can be selected to suit your lifestyle or the way you feel on the day. These herbal recipes and procedures have been handed down through generations and are totally free of petrochemicals, synthetic perfumes or colouring. Some of the herbs and spices are grown in Sukko’s own herb garden and picked just for your treatment, ensuring they are as fresh as can be. I was pampered with the “Be Balanced” package; a 3 hour experience that left me feeling relaxed and refreshed. This three-treatment combination began with 30 minutes in the steam room and the Jacuzzi, followed by a Thai Turmeric Body Scrub designed to soften your skin and awaken your senses. The scrub was followed by Sukko Special Body Massage, performed by hands, using finger pressure on energy points and smooth strokes along energy lines. During the movements of the massage, the molecules of essential oils in Sukko elegant aromatic massage oils are absorbed through the skin and into the bloodstream to benefit the nervous system and other parts of the body. “Is this pressure okay?

“The Best Spa In Southeast Asia”

Too strong? How are you feeling?” my therapist asked me from time to time. “Mmm…perfect…” were the only responses that seemed to suit how I felt. Sukko Spa’s restaurant, Suk Savoey Spa Cuisine, presents a unique concept: "Menu by Blood Types" and "Menu by Element". For those who want to exercise, the Suk Sanan Club provides a myriad of fitness opportunities, including ‘Rue Sri Dat Ton’ (the hermit self stretching), a traditional Thai exercise or, for something more strenuous, try ‘Thai Martial Arts’, a traditional and effective art of self-defense.

THE CHARM RESIDENCE

CHOICE

Location

Space

The Charm Residence is the closest condominium to the beach in Patong, Phuket's best-known beach, making the resort special. Patong Beach has virtually no other developments that are within 50 meters to the beach and are available for outright ownership, making this a unique opportunity for investors. The location will not only strengthen the ability to rent the units once completed, but will also strengthen the potential for capital growth as there are few locations that are as close to the beach as this project. Since the project is located at the northern end of Patong Beach it is only minutes away from the entertainment/shopping/restaurant district, which make up the heart of Patong, but is still at the quiet end of the beach with less noise and less traffic.

The common areas of the development such as the infinity rooftop pool and sun deck add value to the properties within the project. High quality finishing of the common areas and resort amenities plus the interiors of the units makes this a high quality development.

The development is easily accessed off of the main "beach road" (Thaveewong Road).

Specification The Charm Residence offers 3 main styles of units: pool access unit, standard unit and duplex unit. The individual units have large beds and wardrobes, pantry and dining facilities, spacious bathrooms with bathtubs and showers, a lounge area with a couch and entertainment center with writing desk. The furnishings have been carefully selected to ensure ease of maintenance and longevity.

The location is ideal for families, retirees and couples alike.

Price Range Prices start from 5.9 million baht to 16.8 million baht.

Concept The Charm Residence is seen by its attention to detail in the design components of the resort, including the tropical architecture and the contemporary interior decor. The Interior decor has Asian influences mixed with contemporary design elements, which are both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

U.S.-THAI AMITY TREATY: AN OVERVIEW

In early October, a number of American warships, including the U.S.S. John C. Stennis, made a port call in Phuket, exhibiting the longstanding relations between the United States and the Kingdom of Thailand. Such relations also extend deeply in the economic realm, with significant U.S. investment in the country. American investment has been greatly facilitated by the Treaty of Amity and Economic Relations (the “Amity Treaty”), which provides certain benefits to American citizens and companies investing in Thailand. This article provides an overview of the Amity Treaty. Current Status The Amity Treaty, which was signed in 1966, expired on 01 January 2005 as a result of Thailand’s WTO commitment. The Amity Treaty has not been renewed or officially extended. Due to a WTO rule which prohibits special treatment towards nationals of a particular country, Thailand cannot officially maintain the Amity Treaty while also being a WTO member. However, despite its expiration, the Thai government has stated that it will continue to honor the Amity Treaty’s provisions. Moreover, the US government continues to encourage American investors to utilize the Amity Treaty. It is currently uncertain how long Thailand will continue to honor the Amity Treaty, but no indication has yet been made that this policy will cease. It is also uncertain how the status of companies registered under the Amity Treaty after 2005 would be affected if Thailand ceases to allow American investors to set up companies under the treaty (“Treaty Companies”). Eligibility The Amity Treaty applies to the following: • American citizens; • Business entities established under Thai law which are majority American owned; or • Business entities that are established under American law.

• Fiduciary Functions (Please note that the Thai-language version of the Amity Treaty translates “fiduciary functions” as “taking care of others’ property”); • Banking involving depository functions; • Land ownership; • Natural resources exploitation; • Domestic trading in indigenous agricultural products; Treaty Company Registration To set up a Treaty Company, a specific administrative process must be followed. For example, to establish a Treaty Company that is a limited company (one of the more common corporate forms in Thailand), the American entity must submit its Articles of Incorporation, Bylaws, and an affidavit of its manager to the U.S. Commercial Service at the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok. The Commercial Service will then issue a certificate affirming that the applicant is American. This certificate, along with the original copies of the abovestated documents, a completed application obtained from the Department of Business Development of the Ministry of Commerce, and extensive supporting documents, must then be submitted to the Thai Department of Business Development of the Ministry of Commerce. The application and supporting documents must contain details of the type of business for which the application is being made. The process is generally much simpler for individuals seeking to set up “sole proprietorships” in Thailand. Conclusion For American investors, the Amity Treaty is a beneficial investment tool. As long as the Treaty Company does not engage in the restricted areas, such a company can potentially have a competitive advantage over other foreign-invested entities. As a result, eligible investors should consider utilizing a Treaty Company in their Thailand-based investments.

For U.S. companies that are subsidiaries to a parent company, the parent company must be majority-owned and managed by U.S. citizens. In addition, for an American company seeking to directly invest in a Thai company under the Amity Treaty, the majority of the American company’s shareholders, as well as the majority of the shareholders of newly formed company (after the share purchase), must be U.S. citizens. Benefits Pursuant to the Amity Treaty, American citizens and companies may set up a company or branch office in Thailand. The main benefit, however, is that such Treaty Companies are viewed as “domestic”, and are thus permitted to do almost anything a Thai company can do, except for certain important limitations. Notwithstanding these limitations, Treaty Companies can therefore engage in “restricted businesses” as set forth under the Foreign Business Act. Therefore, Treaty Companies can participate in any type of business in Thailand available to Thais except the following areas: • Inland communications; • Inland transportation;

The Melting Pot

I'm pleased to say high season is almost up on us and rather surprisingly the sunshine appears to have arrived early, despite a very wet September. Clear skies are forecast until May and one can already sense the excitement as ever-increasing enquiries filter onto our computer screens and clients from all parts of the globe wander through our doors again. I don’t suppose I'll ever get used to it − the sudden flurry of prospects that always seem to appear between now and the end of the year, which generally follows a couple of quiet months. I disappeared to the UK for a few weeks to get away from it in the hope of an Indian Summer (a late summer heat wave after an otherwise poor English summer). But not a hope. The weather there was not much drIer than here and colder to boot. I'm pleased to be back in Phuket; it has already plunged to 12 degrees back home. This made me check the temperature of some members of our staff ’s home towns; Norbert from Montreal: 10 degrees, George from Novosibirsk: 6 degrees, Maria from Vladivostok: 14 degrees; no surprise that we’re all here and winter hasn’t even started yet back home. Perhaps that’s why you won’t find a more friendly bunch of comrades: Canadian, Russian, Filipino, Indian and Thai, and me of course, the compulsory Englishman, all waiting to serve you. I'm embarrassed to say, however, that amongst all my colleagues I have the least linguistic ability − apart from some schoolboy French and a long time ago German, when I lived there between 1979 and 1982. It’s almost all forgotten now. The rest of my crew speak English, French, Russian, Spanish, Portuguese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese, Hindi and Thai so between us, or should I say them, there aren’t many clients we can’t assist. That’s just as well because, at one time or another, we’ve helped them all to find suitable properties to buy or rent, and this year promises to be no different. The disparity of nationalities is growing and, despite the fact the global thirst to learn English is growing faster, communication still remains a difficulty for many, especially in the complex field of property ownership. Try reading a UK Land Registry title deed and you’ll see what I mean. I spent my formative years in the planning department of the UK Land Registry and it took me a long time to learn 'Officialese', the governmental version of Gobbledygook. The first client I sold a property to after opening our first office in Thailand was Japanese. This was a twist of fate because it was while escorting the gentleman around the island, and struggling a lot because he spoke virtually no English and my Japanese was, well sayonara to that, I introduced him to Norbert Zuber, who was then the sales director of a big development on the island. To my complete surprise Norbert spoke Japanese and the gentleman ended up buying from us. Seven years later, we have two Japanese speakers: Norbert who joined the company as Sales Director in 2008 and more recently Maria from Vladivostok (separated from Japan by the small strip of water known as the Sea of Japan). These days, though, we don’t get many Japanese clients. I'm told not many Japanese like buying homes overseas and if they do they prefer the US or Canada.

happy to leave behind a much colder climate in every sense of the word. I must confess I do find our Russian clients a little difficult to weigh up; they're not the most expressive of people, but they do appear to like having me along apparently because the presence of a long-standing experienced English professional gives them confidence. We get a surprising number of French clients. I say surprising because, on the whole, European numbers have been declining for obvious reasons, but French clients are on the increase and again we're quite fortunate because Norbert just happens to speak fluent French, having been raised in Montreal. It appears the French are becoming a little concerned about their government’s leftist views (apparently a 60 percent CGT is planned in addition to the already high wealth taxes) and many are understandably moving their hard earned cash overseas. The French stick together and once they find someone they feel comfortable with the word gets around. Vive la difference! Over the past seven years we've had so many nationalities through our doors, it got me thinking which was the most unexpected or unlikely? That would definitely have to be the Ecuadorian. Ecuador is just about the most difficult country in the world to get to from Thailand and with the whole of South America, the Pacific and the Caribbean on their doorstep, one would have to ask why would an Ecuadorian come here? The answer: because he first came to Thailand as part of a cultural mission and loved it, Phuket in particular. He now spends about four months of the year here and, though he speaks relatively good English, the addition of our Spanish speaking Rentals Manager, Hiede Depayso, has pleased him immeasurably. He now has complete confidence that he can leave his property for months at a time in her very capable hands without any need for concern − and he’s right! There's no doubt we all like to feel comfortable with the people we're going to place our faith in and language is a major factor. We all understand the need for good communication and the closer to home the person you are dealing with appears to be, the more likely you are to feel comfortable with them, even if it’s only because of the same language. Now you know what an Ecuadorian and a Filipino have in common. When you’re away from home and in unfamiliar territory you want to understand what you’re getting into and if you can’t understand the language it’s going to be tough. When considering buying or renting property, it’s important to understand the small print let alone the language. Communication is everything; wars have been started through lack of it. Phuket is steadily becoming a melting pot for many nationalities but seemingly without the tensions often associated with international communities. Perhaps that’s one of the reasons for its great success; after all what is there to be tense about?

When we first opened in Phuket there weren’t many Russians arriving either, but that’s all changed and it's hardly surprising as the word spreads to the far flung edges of that vast country, none of which is too far from Phuket. We now not only have Russian tourists and second home buyers, we have Russian businesses and a large number of ex-pat Russian residents, most of them

Mr. John Clendon Managing Director of Univanich Palm Oil based in Krabi, re-contacted Helicam to take new aerial imagery along with high quality ground imagery for their new marketing material and an aerial virtual tour. The imagery had to show different aspects of Univanich Palm Oil from research to seedlings to generating electricity from waste. The Helicam pilot (Phil) flew into action firstly using the Helibot helicopter fitted with an 18mega pixel stills camera. A ground base monitor allows Helicam pilot / photographer (Phil) to compose his shots while the Helicopter is airborne. All ground and interior images were then taken using a Canon DSLR camera. The finished imagery has been used on their new graphic exhibition stand and informative posters that were on show at Palmex 2012 in Krabi. Old Phuket Town Much of Phuket’s development has taken place in the last ten years and the building style is resolutely modern – some say, stridently so; but parts of Phuket City are little changed from a hundred years ago. At that time the island was a busy trading port and supported a thriving tin mining industry. The then captains of industry built their prestigious homes in the SinoPortuguese style. Narrow housefronts ornately decorated with

red and gold, the mystic signs representing sacred guardians of the access, yielded to storied accommodations with tall ceilings and interiors often incorporated delightful gardens. Nowadays the streets in the Chinese quarter have transformed themselves into busy thoroughfares featuring antique shops, speciality restaurants and more. Well worth a visit.

Loy Kratong Festival This event is one of the most beautiful and popular festivals in Thailand. It’s traditionally celebrated on the full moon night of the 12th month in the lunar calendar, which usually falls in November. This year it’s on the evening of the 28th November.

During the festival, Thai people will construct a small float from a section of banana tree trunk, decorate it with banana leaves and flowers and add a candle and three sticks of incense. It’s also common practise to include some nail clippings or a few strands of one’s hair, and a small sum of money. The candle and joss sticks are lit and the krathong is floated away on any open stretch of water. As we’re living on an island, this obviously is likely to be the sea. The belief is that this offering to the gods will take away all the bad luck of the past year and thus bring good fortune in the year to come. If you don’t have a banana tree conveniently to hand then many small shops will have ready-made offerings on sale for a few baht. It’s a seasonal cottage industry which is worth supporting. A word of caution, though. In past years, some constructors, in an effort to improve the buoyancy characteristics of their merchandise, took to using

As the sun sets and the moon rises above the horizon, the crowds start to gather on all the accessible beaches. Food stalls appear from nowhere and a carnival atmosphere prevails. For those who still need to buy a krathong, last minute stocks will be available. If you’re planning to get there by car it’s a good idea to arrive early, as parking can be a problem alongside the popular beaches. On the bigger beaches there may also be organised events like beauty contests, fair games, firework displays and handicraft markets. Many people will also make paper lanterns (called khom loy in Thai) which climb into to the sky powered by the heated air from a candle wired inside. This illuminates the canopy at the same time. The sight of hundreds of these tiny flickering points of light climbing into the night sky makes for a delightfully romantic backdrop to the party. If you’re planning to do this, don’t forget to make a wish at the launch – this is the land where wishes come true. Trust me. The origin of the festival goes back to the time of the Sukhothai Kingdom around seven hundred years ago. A lady called Noppamas whose beauty was apparently legendary was the chief consort to thee king k at the he ti ttime. ime m . As a tribute to her beloved she created the first krathong shape on ng in the shap ape of ap a lotus and presented it to him during the celebration n of the festival. festival al. His al Hs Hi Majesty was so taken with the tribute that he ordered thatt the the practise practis ise is should be perpetuated and a tradition was born. The ladies of today who win the beauty contests will be crowned Miss Noppamas in memory of the originator of the custom.

polystyrene for the hull. It’s obviously not very ecologically or politically correct to introduce lots of lumps of nonbiodegradable stuff into the seas around us, which, in due course, may return to pollute our beaches. The gods will not be amused. Take care. As we’ve said, the tides are supposed to carry all your bad luck away, so the further the krathong drifts the less likelihood there’s that ill fortune can come back to bite you. A hot tip, if you launch from the sea gypsies’ village in Rawai, with a 20 baht note on board, the village kids playing in the water will ensure that your craft carries a respectable distance. The gods help those who help themselves. The kids, of course, do the same with the 20 baht.

Enough history. Loy Krathong is a lighthearted celebration of the end of the monsoon rains and a great excuse for a party. Enjoy.
