TRAVEL.PHUKET’S BLOSSOMING STREET ART SCENE
In recent years, a lot has been done to make the streets of Phuket Old Town more aesthetically pleasing. Sidewalks have been repaved, ugly overhead electrical wires removed and buried underground, and many an old Sino-Portuguese building has been given a colourful facelift. Phuket Old Town has always been popular because of its oldworld charm, but perhaps more so nowadays due to the current application of fresh paint on oldstanding buildings in the form of some extremely colourful pieces of street art.

Painted by Mue Bon, this colourful bird adorns the side of a local restaurant on Phang Nga Road
The colourful street art murals on Dibuk Road are a popular spot to take group photos and selfies. The murals are a collaboration between a variety of local Thai artists

n mid-2016, an initiative between a well-known property developer and a local artist came to fruition. The initiative took on the name ‘F.A.T. Phuket’ (Food Art Town) and the project instantly became the talk of the town. Local artists and some of Thailand’s most famous street artists quite literally canvassed the streets to give the town yet another renovation as colourful paintings and murals started popping up all over the place. It is no secret that street art tends to be a controversial subject, quite possibly because the concept is often misunderstood. The days of young kids with paint cans spraying graffiti all over the place are mostly past. These days, street art takes on more creative and artistic forms; artists have become more innovative in their approaches, cumulating in some really great murals and gorgeous pieces of art.

Capturing the ‘shabby-chic’ essence of Phuket Old Town, street-art pieces and various murals have brightened up street corners, adding flair to external restaurant walls and noodle shops, enticing tourists as well as locals and expats to wander into previously dark alleys, and have generally added a colourful character to the already charming Old Town district of Phuket. It’s now common to see people posing for pictures in front of these large, colourful pieces of art.

TRAVEL.PHUKET’S STREET ART SCENE
Each unique, the murals and street-art pieces add a welcome dash of colour and a fresh coat of paint to the old town’s once-dreary Sino-Portuguese shop-houses in. The depictions are bright and cheery and some vividly display local culture.
Although hard to find, the hornbill is a gorgeous piece that pays homage to one of the island’s local birds
Take two examples, both by a popular Thai street artist with a deep-rooted Peranakan theme running through them, touching on Phuket’s prominent Thai-Chinese heritage. One features a character in an intricate batik sarong and kebaya – traditional garb worn by Phuket’s local Baba community – while the other is a large-scale interpretation of the annual ‘Hungry Ghosts’ (Por Tor) festival, the massive piece a showstopping red, painted in the form of a turtle, symbolising the red turtle sweet cake – the symbol of long life and good fortune – served during the ‘Por Tor’ festival.
In today’s social media age, the murals in Phuket have proven to be very interactive, prompting people to pose in front of, or alongside the works while their photograph is taken and promptly uploaded and shared to a worldwide range of social media sites and this can only be a good thing.
About the artists: Mue Bon Bon is a Bangkok-based visual and creative street artist skilled in a variety of media including installation, painting, video and performance art, as well as mixed-media. He is well known for his colourful street murals in Thailand and across Southeast Asia. Alex Face Patcharapol Tangruen is popularly known as ‘Alex Face’. One of Thailand’s most influential street and graffiti artists, he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine and Applied Arts from Bangkok’s King Mongktut Institute of Technology. An artist with a social conscience, his ‘Baby with the third-eye character’ can be found all over Thailand. Ludmila Letnikova Well known by her colourful hair and striking clothes, Luda is a Phuket-based expat artist originally from Russia. Luda is trained in graphic design, post production, illustration and art direction. She often collaborates with the Attitude Club and is a member of Phuket Sketchers.
Murals have added a splash of fresh paint to Phuket’s Sino-Portuguese buildings and shophouses
Rukkit Khuanhawate Rukkit is a popular street artist and graphic designer from Bangkok. Graduating with a degree in Art Education from Chulalongkorn University, he started painting street murals by stencil in 2011. He’s famous for his colourful and geometric style, and has painted street art in such places as far apart as Hong Kong, India and Dubai. Thaweesak Srithongdee Better known by his nickname ‘Lolay’, Thaweesak is a well-respected Thai graphic designer and a well-versed artist. Largely known for his local designs and acrylics, Lolay also draws on his international experience as he’s participated in several solo and group exhibitions abroad – and in 2005 enjoyed an artist residency in Japan. Other scenes often appear to pop up out of nowhere; as you wander the streets of the old town, an impressively large lion’s head graces the entrance to a parking garage while a pastel-rendered bird with large protruding eyes has made the side of a famous local eatery its ‘nest’. A hornbill, a native of the region, is brought to life under an abandoned awning, while a dancing Chinese troupe ups the ante of the entrance to a small but popular Chinese shrine. Indeed, wandering the streets of Phuket Old Town affords the opportunity to get up close and personal to this unique street art and provides a chance to see just how detailed the works actually are. Whether Phuket’s authorities have fully realised it or not, street art is a fantastic way to promote tourism: it is seen as fresh and contemporary and in today’s social media age the murals in Phuket have proven to be very interactive, prompting people to pose in front of, or alongside, the works while their photograph is taken and promptly uploaded and shared to a worldwide range of social media sites. This can only be a good thing.
Pichit Paidan Hailing from Mae Hong Son, Pichit is a prolific artist whose works depict life in the Kingdom in an epic manner. He is famous for bridging the gap between artists and communities, as well as local and national governments. His impressive paintings are an ode to society, mixing images of life in both northern and southern Thailand. Ton Lim (P7) Bangkok-based, P7 is an artist and designer who merges contemporary fine art with street-art sensibilities – no mean task. Interestingly, P7 is self-taught. He works all over Thailand and has also displayed on the international market. His work typically intertwines cartoon-like shapes, colours and figures.
Street art murals are getting people out and about, and producing some outstanding images on social media

Thalang Road photo opportunity awaits against the backdrop of a flowery, blue Land Rover
The fresh paint decorating Phuket Old Town enhances the certain charm of the area there’s no doubt about that, but perhaps the best outcome of this all is that visitors to the island, as well as locals and expats, have been prompted to get out and about more. Foot traffic within the already busy Phuket Old Town has increased, which shows that island folk and visitors are discovering more of Phuket and what the island has to offer rather than idling their time away in air-conditioned shopping malls. As the street art scene in Phuket continues to blossom and flourish, it’ll be grand to see more and more pieces providing unique photographic opportunities as well as scenes that shed a positive, affectionate, light on Phuket Old Town and the island as a whole.

A Creative Passion:
Rose Maitland Smith
W
e meet at Silk Restaurant at Andara Resort. I arrive early but mistake the precise venue. Rose is serene, unflustered by the delay. Beautiful, elegantly but simply dressed, glowing with health, I recall her resume: “Just turned 40… my heart still feels 24”. What’s more, she looks 24. Perhaps it’s a question of attitude for Rose is passionate about many things – indeed, ‘heart’, ‘enthusiasm’ and ‘passion’ are three of her favourite epithets. As the “proud mother of two wonderful girls” they represent her most passionate project. Now aged nine and eleven, they attend Kajonkiet International School, where they are already showing exceptional prowess as swimmers. By choosing KISP with its emphasis on Thai culture, she believes her girls will continue to be proud of their national heritage. As a Thai parent she is convinced of the importance of good manners and respect for others. Nonetheless, Rose would like them to spend time at a university in England or America (as indeed she did in Seattle at the tender age of 16), both to broaden their horizons and to hone their English. Still, that ‘project’ is some way away... Her enduring love for Phuket is another example of Rose’s passion: after all, the island was where she spent many vacations before deciding to call it home. Describing it as “this beautiful island”, she declares that she “loves to be in a place that surrounds me with inspiration,” adding that she and her family “would never dream of leaving it.” Praise indeed... Married to a British gentleman, she lives with her family in a modern home she planned in close harmony with the architect. Set on a spectacular rocky promontory, it provides her with amenities key to her well-being: a sense of privacy, close contact with the natural environment and an idyllic location in which to bring up her daughters. It is, moreover, “perfect…for living and entertaining friends.”
Rose hopes Phuket will not end up as another Singapore. She applauds its ‘simple lifestyle’ and ‘beautiful scenery’, and hopes it can stay that way When constructing the property, Rose retained the original mature trees, including coconut palms, and included large expanses of lawn in a gar den that slopes right down to the sea. By doing this, and by cultivating local plants, including shrubs such as buddleias to encourage butterflies, she has created a haven for wildlife. Not everyone in Phuket shares the same concern for nature and repose. Indeed it’s a matter for concern to Rose that the island is being developed too rapidly and without sufficient concern for its future. As she says, they don’t think about “the bigger picture”. She’d prefer the island’s evolution to continue in ways which will not destroy its charm. “The most disappointing thing… is that many people try to change it … in a completely wrong direction.”

No fan of big cities, Rose hopes Phuket will not end up as another Singapore. She applauds its “simple lifestyle” and “beautiful scenery”, and hopes it can stay that way. Apart from her daughters, she has a plethora of other interests. As befits someone who has more than 10 years’ experience of yachting, and as the holder of a degree from Mahidol University International College in Travel Industry Management, she is perfectly equipped for her current positions: Ambassador for Pommery Champagne, and, most importantly, the prestigious role of Official Ambassador for the forthcoming Thailand Yacht Show. This event, supported by the Ministry of Tourism, takes place from 15-18 December at Ao Po Grand Marina, and combines the “best aspects of yacht charter, boating industry and luxury lifestyle events”. Rose sees her key role as a public relations one: helping to put Phuket on the map as a world-class yachting venue and destination, and “linking people together who share the same passion… to get them to enjoy the same passion”.
Rose sees her key role as a public relations one: helping to put Phuket on the map as a world-class yachting venue and destination, and “linking people together who share the same passion… to get them to enjoy the same passion You may be sure that she is very good at it… In this connection, she’s recently returned from two celebrated expositions on the Cote d’Azur, the Yachting Festival de Cannes, and the Monaco Yacht Show, where she was able to promote the virtues of this island as a winter Mecca for superyacht owners and charterers. Rose’s enthusiasms don’t stop there. As befits her artistic inclinations, she’s a painter of some repute, who last year held a one-woman exhibition of her work at The Boathouse hotel in Kata. Her colourful canvasses are in the tradition of abstract expressionism. She’s a keen photographer and holds a student pilot’s licence. Flying gives her a sense of freedom and a confidence which she says comes from believing you can handle anything the elements throw at you. How does she manage to fit in all these activities? Part of the secret lies in her serene temperament and her sense of initiative; “I’ll never be shy about trying new things all the time.” She keeps fit and alert by going to the gym and working out at least six times a week. It shows… in mens sana corpore sano – a healthy mind in a healthy body. Add the ingredients of passion and pulchritude, and you have Rose Maitland Smith.

The Phuket King’s Cup Regatta Under Royal Patronage will draw a sizeable gathering of sailors from around the world to mark its 30th Anniversary year.
This year’s fleet will comprise around 13 different competing classes of yacht with crew, support personnel and families from many countries, including USA, Australia, Great Britain, Russia, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and China.
The regatta programme includes the Phuket Dinghy Series, International Dinghy Classes, keelboats and multihulls amongst its competitive classes, as well as a new CRX Kiteboard class. The 30th Anniversary Regatta is to be held from 3-10 December, 2016, at Kata Beach Resort and Spa, Phuket, Thailand.
The new CRX Kiteboard Class will provide a three-day open clinic for young riders from 5-7 December and a race in Chalong Bay during the regatta. More than 30 riders around Asia are expected to participate.
With dinghies and youth sailors included, something like 190 entries and in the region of 1,500 participants are expected to join the 2016 regatta, giving a welcome boost to local businesses in and around Kata Beach. In recent years, Phuket has also become home to fast-developing youth sailing talent. According to regatta president Kevin Whitcraft, “With so much interest in sailing and yacht racing among Thailand’s juniors, the regatta committee installed the Phuket Dinghy Series which has inspired youths from many sailing clubs in Phuket, Phang Nga, Songkhla and as far as Chonburi, to take up sailing since its introduction in 2010. There is great hunger and motivation, especially among young sailors here, for competing at world championships.”
Whitcraft said, “We are proud of our new wave of young Thai sailors. Bam Kamolwan Chanyim (KC Laser winner 2012), was the first female Thai sailor to join the Olympics in Rio, together with Keerati Bualong, KC Laser winner 2015. And earlier this year, our 2014 and 2015 Optimist winner from Phuket Youth Sailing Club, Nattapong (Max) Yuang-ngam was crowned World Champion at the Rooster International Topper 4.2 World Championships 2016 in Northern Ireland.

The abundance of nature in Kuraburi is outstanding, and perhaps none more beautiful than the crystal waters of the Nang Yon River – the perfect setting for Tarn Morakot Rafting, an exciting new business that promotes excellent eco-tourism trips while at the same time benefitting the community. Tarn Morakot Rafting is sustainable tourism at its best and the 20 dedicated bamboo rafts have been made by local community members and artisans. The bamboo rafting company ensures that tourism remains communitybased by only employing locals and offering career advancement in the form of on-site job training, all the while educating locals, visitors and tourists about green initiatives and corporate social responsibility. Tarn Morakot Rafting offers the unique opportunity to spend a day in the splendid nature of this region in the form of bamboo rafting down a long and winding lazy river that is crisp and clean, but more importantly shallow and calm.

Although Tarn Morakot Rafting is a relatively new business, the company’s founders are well known in the community. A group of four professionals, as well as longtime friends, they are no strangers to hospitality and tourism. Their collective goal was to start a company showcasing the natural beauty of Kuraburi – and they’ve certainly succeeded. Tarn Morakot Rafting’s location along the river is stunning, flanked by verdant trees and vegetation. It should be noted that the rafting grounds and the river are immaculately clean, no doubt a labour of love by the rafting staff. The water is inviting, and although a bit cool, so very refreshing. An exceptional, affordable day out in the sunshine floating on the Nang Yon River is what you can expect. The entire bamboo rafting trip takes just over an hour and life jackets are provided for the safety of guests.

Kuraburi Greenview Resort offers a variety of accommodation options in a rustic, natural setting
Kuraburi has a lot to offer, and it’s worth staying overnight to have time to visit all of the local community sights. If you’re looking for a great place to lay your head while exploring, Kuraburi Greenview Resort is a fantastic option for solo travellers, families and groups of friends. Nestled in a valley next to a private lake, Kuraburi Greenview Resort offers a variety of bungalow-style accommodation choices well within most travellers’ budgets. The resort has six different room types, including fan rooms, family rooms, bungalows and cabins. During high season from November to late April, room rates range from 1,500 baht to approximately 3,500 baht. Kuraburi, much like any other small Thai town, is home to plenty of restaurants and street stalls serving fresh, delicious food. However, if you are looking for a complete fine local dining experience, it’s highly recommended to check out a modest, Muslim restaurant in town called Tasmeam Shabu & Coffee.
Rooms, bungalows and cabins are spacious and clean and include such amenities as a refrigerator, coffee and tea maker, mini-bar and a landline telephone. Thai TV channels are also available as is Wi-Fi and a DVD player.
Tasmeam Shabu & Coffee is a quaint, cozy restaurant popular for its shabu hotpot dishes of thinly sliced boiled meats and vegetables, along with its strong coffee varieties. In addition, Tusmeam Shabu & Coffee also features a small menu serving simple, delicious dishes guaranteed to satisfy. Everything on the menu uses fresh ingredients and plays on local flavours. Items are well-presented in simple, bamboo dishes giving the meal a rustic feel. Recommended dishes from the menu include leafy vegetables cooked in coconut milk known as pak liang, root vegetables fried tempura-style and served with spicy Thai nam phrik, a popular steamed eggs dish called kai toon in Thai and a delightful, tasty stir-fried chicken dish with shrimp paste and chilies. The meal is rounded out with wild mushrooms and a variety of herbs including lemongrass steamed, wrapped, and served in bamboo leaves with a delicate dipping sauce.
The main lobby houses an on-site restaurant that serves American and Continental breakfasts as well as the option of a set menu for lunch and dinner. It also features a meeting room big enough to host large groups or teambuilding events. Staff members are informed and friendly and are able to answer queries regarding local sites to see or places to check out while staying in Kuraburi.

Nestled in the hills of northern Thailand, Lampang is a perfect place to wind down, relax, and get a taste of the city’s colourful past as a teak trade hub. When travel conversations centre in on the north of Thailand, cities like Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai invariably get the brunt of the attention. And sure enough, they both offer a plethora of cultural, culinary and shopping pursuits, not to mention stunning backdrops against misty mountains, mighty rivers and rolling hills. But what of a place that has all of that yet without hordes of tourists? Welcome to Lampang. Humans have settled in this part of Thailand for millennia and the area is rich in remnants from the many civilisations that have called it home. Mon, Lanna-era and Burmese-inspired temples are found on both banks of the river. Majestic teak mansions lining the old town, and the streets in the quiet residential area on the northern bank of the Wang River, stand in silent testimony to the city’s rich past as one of the centres of Thailand’s lucrative teak trade.

One of the city’s landmarks, and a good place to start exploring, is the Ratchadapisek Bridge which spans the Wang River from the eastern end of Thalad Kao Road. Its perfectly shaped white arches make for a striking sight. The bridge was allegedly the longest in the country when it was constructed in 1894 and has collapsed a number of times. Its current structure dates back to 1917. Both ends of the bridge display the Lampang provincial seal – a rooster, which is also found on the city’s famous and popular ceramic products that can be found all over Thailand. Those looking to buy a souvenir or two should head to Thalad Kao Road, the main commercial street in Lampang, lined with small shops, restaurants and small hostels. One of the more interesting emporiums here is a spice shop more than 100 years old, selling products from both Thailand and China. The spices are kept in old wooden cabinets and weighed on old-fashioned scales. For something a little livelier, head to Wangnua Road on Friday afternoons for its quaint local market, where locals set up stalls selling home-cooked food, old-school cooking utensils, secondhand clothing, accessories and shoes – as well as vintage furniture plus just about everything in between.
Khao soy noodles
The area around Ratchadapisek Bridge is also home to some of the best food in Lampang. Just off the bridge on the northern bank you will find Khao Soi Islam in a small alley where Khun Wittaya’s family has sold its popular noodles dishes since the 1970s. Served with either chicken or beef and a generous helping of both crispy and soft egg noodles, the succulent broth will make you ask for seconds. If you come before lunch, you might be lucky enough to sample the restaurant’s excellent chicken or beef satays as well.
An old scale in a spice shop
On the other side of the bridge, Kanom Jeen Pa Boonsri serves another northern specialty: fermented rice noodles served with various curries and fresh bean sprouts, green beans and herbs. Make sure to try the kanom jeen nam ngiaw – noodles served with a rich tomato-based curry, pork meat and blood cakes.

A flat fee maintenance and cleaning package is also available which will be deducted from commissions earned by Lofty.
For luxury villa owners, Lofty offers a premium service that only charges 5% commission plus a flat fee for full time services like private chefs, villa managers, and maids. Primarily through Airbnb, Booking.com, Agoda, HomeAway and its own Lofty Villas website.
It’s not an easy job but Lofty is uniquely qualified to take on the task with a management team that includes veterans from the Phuket hotel industry. Owners and guests will be impressed with the range and quality of services offered.
However, the company has also strong connections with the Chinese marketplace and sources a growing number of bookings through Ctrip, Tujia and Zhubaijia, along with connections to offline travel agents in China.
Owners receive a full set of professional photos upon signing up to the service and weekly property inspections are complimentary. Effortless Lifestyle
Location: The Anchan Villas are located just five minutes away from Layan’s white sandy beach. The site was chosen with care to ensure residents enjoy the peace and tranquility of a secluded neighbourhood with the convenience and prestige of residing in one of Phuket ‘s upcoming residential areas, where everything needed for comfortable living is nearby. Price range: From THB 25.5 million with flexible payment plan. About the developer: Anchan Villas is developed by Pearl Island Property Co., Ltd. Since it was established on Phuket in 2007, Pearl Island has earned a solid reputation as a professional design and property development firm delivering the highest quality products, situated in the most sought-after locations, and built to the highest international standards. As testament to the calibre of the project, Anchan Villas was awarded “Highly Commended” and “Winner” in the Best Phuket Villa Development category in the prestigious Thailand Property Awards 2012, 2013 and again in 2015.
Space: Anchan Villas are designed to be spacious and airy with an attractive and practical layout. The built-up areas start from 600 to 840sqm. and rest on plot sizes from 800-1,500sqm. Each villa features a large private swimming pool with a spacious terrace that connects to the master bedroom and main living room, combining your indoor and outdoor activities and contributing a comfortable and convenient tropical lifestyle. Management: Our management team also offers full villa maintenance and cleaning services, ensuring your villa will be well maintained both during your stay and while you are away. Villa rental management is also available for home owners who want a return on their investment by renting out their property while not there.
ADVERTORIAL Phuket’s popularity as a place to own a second home has resulted in a vast choice of properties being built; from near-beachside condominiums to secluded hillside villas. Most people prefer to aspire to private villas but their expensive upkeep and maintenance costs are sometimes enough to deter prospective buyers who opt for condominium living instead. However, this needn’t be the case. The View, a luxury low-rise development in the hills of Kata, is a perfect mix of villa living with the ease and convenience you would come to expect in a condominium. The concept at The View is to create an environment as close as possible to your own private home. But the beauty of it is that it all comes with the added extras not found in a stand-alone villa. Firstly, each unit is cleverly designed to maximise privacy, each with its own entrance to give the feeling of a separate entity, and each enjoying panoramic Andaman Sea views.
Concept: These contemporary modern style villas are an ideal investment as a holiday home in the tropics or a permanent residence offering the peace and tranquility of a secluded location, yet just a short distance from a pristine coastline with all modern amenities nearby.
“When building The View, I felt that it was important to balance the look and style of the building while making life for the residents straightforward,” comments architect Alex, from Denmark. “After all, many of the investors are expatriates in Southeast Asia, so they just want to fly in, enjoy their time at The View and then leave without having to worry about maintenance.” Its slick state-of-the-art minimalist design is not something you’d expect in a normal standard residential development. The kitchens and bathrooms are from Denmark and this modern and contemporary Scandinavian theme is consistent throughout. Some of these two-storey units have their own garden and pool, thus adding to the feeling of a private villa. Each unit can be opened up to enjoy the sea breezes, and The View has its own helipad – one of only six on the whole island. Unlike some private detached villas, residents at The View all have access to excellent facilities that include two swimming pools – one of which is an infinity pool – as well as a spa, a fitness centre and a clubhouse. Essentially, The View provides the simplicity of condominium living, but in a prime hillside location for those who desire a luxurious, effortless lifestyle.

LEGAL MATTERS.PRACTICAL TIPS FOR AVOIDING LEGAL ENCOUNTERS IN PHUKET - PART 2
LEGAL MATTERS.PRACTICAL TIPS FOR AVOIDING LEGAL ENCOUNTERS IN PHUKET - PART 2
PRACTICAL TIPS for dealing with legal
misdemeanor. If you have opinions about your own country, its status and its heads of state, then of course you can express them how you like, in your own country, subject to the laws of that country. Bear in mind that you may one day wish to visit Thailand again; it is wrong to think that because you may not like the laws of a country, you somehow have the right to choose whether to respect those laws or not.
encounters in Phuket – Part 2
I
n the last issue, I wrote about the kind of incidents that visitors to this great Kingdom can encounter and provided some tips about overcoming or mitigating issues such as: road traffic accidents, being asked and legally obliged to carry and present identification at all times, and avoiding losing your temper and violating very strict laws relating to insults. Amidst a backdrop of foreigners visiting other countries and falling foul of laws they don’t seem to have brushed up on, such as the Australian nationals who were recently arrested for displaying the Malaysian national flag on their underwear at a Formula 1 event, it seems appropriate to consider that every country has its own set of laws, rules and regulations. It isn’t a country’s obligation to inform every visitor what they should and should not do. In the age of ‘millenialism’ it seems there is a use of information gathering devices, but not enough use of the information available on them to ensure cultural sensitivities and legal obligations are properly dealt with. Here are some practical tips for common issues that arise in Phuket that can assist with ‘brushes’ with the law as set out in this Part 2 of a 2-part article:
1. Hotel injuries Recently we have been contacted by a number of tourists/visitors to Phuket who have suffered quite serious debilitating injuries in hotels. The circumstances of an injury can be very different on a case-by-case basis. Sometimes an accident really is ‘nobody’s fault’ and is just a quirk of circumstance. However, sometimes an accident can be due to negligence by way of an act of a hotel’s operations, or a failure to do something such as maintaining adequate life, health and safety measures at all times. If you happen to be someone who suffers an injury, or one of your friends or family suffers an injury, then you should take the following measures (a) Make sure that the facts of the injury are properly recorded in writing – the time, the place and the nature of what happened – as soon as possible after the injury. Do not hesitate in writing down this information, or if you are incapacitated, ask a friend or family member to do so for you, to avoid both memory and facts becoming clouded. (b) Take photos of the site of the injury. (c) If you start to engage in discussions with hotel representatives, make sure you are careful not to make any undue admissions and reserve your rights and position. Whatever you say could be to your detriment if you reach the point where you need to sue for compensation/damages. (d) If you are incapacitated so that you may not work, you should obtain medical certificates specifically confirming your inability to work and for how long it is anticipated this inability will last.
(e) You must keep a record of all medical expenses and bills. (f ) You must keep a note of the lost income you may have suffered. (g) You must keep a record of any and all other expenses, eg transport costs including any emergency flights or booking adjustment costs, extra accommodation costs and legal fees. (h) If there were witnesses, try and secure their agreement to record events and potentially be a witness at a subsequent date. This is easier said than done. (i) Do not leave the incident too long, and note that a normal claim can be limited by time to one year from the date of the injury. You should also liaise with a law firm in Thailand, and potentially in your home country, and work out with them if certain proceedings can be brought – through service of notices in ‘paralell’. Note that the structure of many hotels is that there is a hotel owner, a separate entity that ‘operates’ the hotel on a branded basis (which may have a head office outside of Thailand) and a mandatory insurer. Dealing with a personal injury claim requires an understanding of how to navigate these relationships.
2. Respecting Thai culture Thailand is world-famous for its hospitality. Not only is it a generally welcoming country, but it is also a very tolerant society in general, unless a foreigner or guest crosses the line.
•
Don’t disrespect any religious images –and that includes Buddhist images. In many countries, a Buddha image is displayed as an icon of coolness and may even be used in an image for commercial marketing. However, in Thai Buddhist society, this is not acceptable. Buddhism is generally very tolerant, so the rules of Buddhism will often not be forced upon visitors. But it is expected that there is an understanding that tolerance should not invite abuse. Even residents ignore these sensitivities and choose to adorn certain areas of their residence with Buddhist statues and images, not understanding the spiritual significance of such images and without receiving or seeking guidance from a Buddhist on what they are doing. Such persons may be forgiven for these mistakes, but the fact of them can be quite embarrassing and can paint a bad picture of foreign attitudes towards Thai culture, including Buddhist culture. If you don’t understand something, then learn about it before you seek to use the images and identity of that thing.
Enjoy your time visiting Thailand, and in particular Phuket. Everyone who cares about the country and this Province wishes that those who show respect will return over and over again. If you do encounter or suffer an injury or difficulty, take the same care as you would in your own country to deal with the incident properly.
Sometimes in Thailand there are reports of violent crime against foreigners, and this is sad and disturbing. However, this is not unique to Thailand, and it should be noted that many countries have danger zones where crime takes place on an indiscriminate basis; London’s streets have stabbings and now more gun crime; there is plenty of gun crime in the U.S. and currently a high crime and murder rate in Chicago. Thailand’s tolerance can lead to a false sense of the right to take advantage of the tolerance. When listening to stories of encounters that foreign visitors experience, unfortunately the issues may be self-created or a large part of the issue may have been contributed to through ignorance or deliberate misconduct. I often see, as I am sure you do, lists of ‘do’s and don’ts in Thailand. Really there are some people, particularly residents who have lived here for some years, who should know better. I mentioned some issues in the first part. Here is a special list of just two particular issues of significant note:
•
Don’t talk about the Royal Family in a disparaging way. It is insulting, and illegal to do so – a SERIOUS CRIME in fact. If you do break this rule and you try to engage another foreigner or a Thai in your conversation, then this means that you could be involving them in your

Monkey Hill (Khao To Sae) view point.
One of the great ways to enjoy Phuket is sailing in the many beautiful bays. There's no shortage of yacht operators and there's something to suit everybody. Activities range from sailing lessons through yacht charters to dinner cruises. Check out our marine pages for some of the operators who can help make sure you get the most out of your boating experience.
This hill towers over Phuket City and is easily spotted as it’s topped with wireless masts. The narrow approach road allows views of Phuket’s eastern beaches and at the top, there’s a jogging track. This is a favourite place for locals who come here to exercise or just to chill out. There are no specific facilities, but the Khao To Sae shrine makes a pleasant interlude. Don’t forget to bring a bag of peanuts to feed the monkeys, but watch out! Don’t get too close. The monkeys are wild. © Charter Catamaran - www.chartercatamaran.com © Charter Catamaran - www.chartercatamaran.com

‘Run for Kids’, the second ACCOR HOTELS ‘Heartbreak Hill Mini Marathon’ was held on 18 September at Naithon Beach. It was a huge success, with 17 ACCOR hotel teams in the South of Thailand attending.
ADVERTORIAL The teams were from Pullman Arcadia Naithon Beach, Sofitel Krabi Phokeethra Golf & Spa Resort, Avista Hideaway Patong, Mgallery By Sofitel, Pullman Khaolak Katiliya Resort & Villas, Pullman Panwa Beach Resort, Grand Mercure Patong, Novotel Phuket Kamala Beach, Novotel Karon Beach Resort & Spa, Novotel Phuket Resort Novotel Vintage Park Resort, Novotel Surin Beach Resort, Novotel Kata Avista Resort & Spa, Novotel Phokeethra & Ibis Styles Phokeethra, All Seasons Nai Harn Phuket, Ibis Phuket Kata & Patong, and Ibis Style Krabi Ao Nang Around 2,000 runners participated on the day and we sold 2,873 tickets, generating well over a million baht before cost deductions. We were also blessed by three donations from hotel guests as follows: An auction initiated by Felix von Jascheroff, a German TV Star staying at Pullman Phuket Arcadia over the weekend and who wants to help raise even more funds back in Germany; the Schmid Family, guests of Pullman Phuket Arcadia who donated 75,000 baht to the cause; a third donation came from the Langford Family, guests at Pullman Khao Lak, who donated 5,000 baht. There were three cheerleader teams along with a DJ to root for the runners and a lot of prizes in the lucky draw. Additionally, Athit – a special-needs runner from Bangkok who flew down for the race – was our ‘last’ runner who showed such a big heart, finishing the run in 3.30 hrs. The funds raised are aimed to improve the education and well-being of underprivileged children in the area. Our priority is to raise funds for local schools in Phuket and nearby provinces and to support the Accor Yim Kids Project which is a part of ACCOR HOTELS’ corporate social responsibility project.
