Phuket's fame and fortune is founded primarily from its stunning beaches – and they are still the fundamental reason most, if not all, holidaymakers hit this tropical island year after year. But how many are there? Where are they? Which is the most beautiful? Why? On this page, and on Page 12, you'll find most of Phuket's beaches. The number in the blue circle corresponds to the same number on the Page 12 map, making it easy to plan your beach itinerary. We recommend renting a car – and driving carefully!

BOATING.GALEON 500 FLY REVIEW

BOATING.GALEON 500 FLY REVIEW

Galeon 500 Fly The Power of Innovation When it comes to innovative features and pure excitement, the Galeon 500 Fly has no equal. Amaze yourself with this, the ultimate party boat! Highly customizable, with three distinct aft configurations to choose from, the 500 Fly offers flexibility when it comes to cockpit arrangements. Choose between a full-sized garage with a sundeck on top, a classic L-shaped sofa and crew cabin setup or the innovative roto-seat option that includes a compact garage. Best of all, all three will let you take full advantage of the unique beach mode that extends the width of the cockpit to a stunning 5.8 metres by dropping down both the port and starboard sides.

Galeon 500 Fly wins the IBI Boat Builders Award 2015 in the ‘Innovative on Board Solution’ category When it comes to innovative features and pure excitement the Galeon 500 Fly has no equal. Amaze yourself with this, the ultimate party boat!

This luxury leisure craft is designed by awardwinning Tony Castro and built by Galeon Yachts, a Poland-based motor yacht builder. Galeon Yachts are distributed in Asia by Asia Marine Yacht Services in Hong Kong. “The Galeon 500 FLY revolutionary concept created a big buzz at the Cannes Boat Show last year,” says Vincent Tabuteau, CEO of Asia Marine. “The boat features a unique ‘beach mode’ function, which extends the width of the cockpit to six metres by dropping down both the port and starboard sides. It is the perfect setting for our tropical cruising grounds in Phuket.”

The bow rest area comes with a transformable seating arrangement – the first for a yacht in this class. A swift and automated system will quickly alter the sundeck into a comfortable seating area and auto-level it to a proper position. An optional, soft top bimini is also available for extra protection. Up top, the sizable flybridge can be fitted with a wet bar, sundecks, and a second helm station for easier maneuvering. With two different garage options and a powerful hydraulic bath platform, you can choose between a rich variety of engaging water paraphernalia.

Asia Marine was appointed Thailand exclusive dealer in December 2015 and the first Galeon was ordered at the Phuket International Boat Show (PIMEX) in January. The boat is expected to arrive in Phuket in September.

Kanom jeen This is a Phuket breakfast favourite, and it should be noted that ‘some assembly is required’ to fully enjoy this dish. You first need to select your curry – beef, chicken, fish, crab – which is put in a bowl with rice noodles. Then you’ll find a selection of crunchy vegetables including radish, sprouts and green beans, plus sauces, spices and herbs at your table, which you add and mix according to your taste. Artful eating at its best. Haw mok

SCENE

This spicy crab mousse cake steamed and served in banana leaf makes for a rich and zippy complement to any meal, especially kanom jeen.

Tropical Phuket is most famous for its beaches, but to experience the real heart and soul of the island it’s essential to delve into its local food culture. Throughout Thailand, eating is a joy and an all-day topic of conversation − and Phuket is no exception. When Thais are not busy eating they’re often talking about their last meal . . . or their next one. This is just a theory, but we believe that if people were to learn the vocabulary for Thai food only, they’d be able to follow 80 percent of the chatter here. From the lively markets to street stalls, to tiny family-run eateries with three or four tables, fresh fare is inexpensive and easy to find in every corner of Phuket. And with so many roving motorbike food carts, lazy gourmets could just stay home or find a shady spot along the road and wait for the food to come to them!

Here’s a sampling of some of our favourite cheap Phuket dishes, none of which will cost you more than 50 baht

There’s no shame in eating cheaply here. We’ve seen some prominent local businesspeople and politicians happily slurping up 40-baht bowls of noodles at no-name stalls on several occasions. Immaculately dressed office ladies can often be seen at street-side food shops tucking into a plate of khao kha moo (stewed pork leg) or a similarly cheap rice dish, their designer handbags delicately balancing on a plastic stool beside them. Takeaway is also popular, and most every food vendor here will be able to box up or bag their meal offerings and assorted condiments with great skill and lightning speed. Their ability to cinch a plastic bag airtight with a quick wrap of a rubber band is impressive – we’ve never had a leaky bag of fish sauce yet!

Satay Grilled lightly curried meat (usually pork) on a stick served with a spicy peanut sauce plus a side of sliced onion and cucumber soaked in vinegar. If you turn up at a party with a bagful of satay, you’ll be very popular indeed.

One of the easiest ways to find a tasty variety of cheap eats is to visit a local festival, of which there are many throughout the year in Phuket. Some of the best events for satisfying your local food cravings include the Phuket Old Town Festival in JanuaryFebruary, the Chalong Temple Fair held annually during Chinese New Year and the Patong Beach Carnival in December. In Saphan Hin public park in Phuket City, there’s usually a festival of some sort or another about every month. The festival themes may vary, but they’re always teeming with food vendors.

And no meal is complete without a selection of sweets or snacks! Here are some of our top choices: Salapao (steamed Chinese buns stuffed with BBQ pork or bean), khao tum mud (banana and sticky rice wrapped in banana leaves – only 10 baht per piece!), kanom krok (little round servings of coconut pudding, often topped with corn), kanom buang (crispy wafer with coconut cream and shredded coconut), sangkaya fuk tong (pumpkin and coconut custard), khao lam (sticky rice in bamboo – the black rice variety is our favourite), sakoo (steamed tapioca balls stuffed with pork and peanut, served with lettuce and chili). One sweet that’s almost too pretty to eat is luk chub, a sugary bean candy skilfully shaped to look like tiny fruits, vegetables or chillies.

Roti A Thai-style pancake. This fried dough is served either sweet with banana and sweetened condensed milk or savoury with a small curry dish at the side. It was an early-morning beef curry roti that convinced us of something that the locals have long known: spicy breakfasts are a true delight.

These are just a few of the endless choices of fresh ’n’ cheap eats on sale around the island. With only a few baht to lose if you don’t like a particular snack or meal, there’s no excuse not to be an adventurous and exploratory eater in Phuket.

Hokkien noodles

Dim sum

When served in a soup, this is a refreshing dish with round noodles, thinly sliced pork, shrimp and a delicious egg-noodle dumpling stuffed with herbed minced pork. Also in hot demand for the lunch set are ‘dry’ Hokkien noodles, usually stir-fried with a mix of pork and seafood – very hearty and filling, especially if an egg is thrown in.

For most dim sum shops you need to arrive early in the morning to avoid missing out on the best of these tiny servings of steamed pork, seafood and vegetables. Diners are charged by the bowl, about 10-20 baht per serving. To find a dim sum shop, look for an open restaurant with either huge metal pots with rounded lids or stacks of bamboo steamer bowls.

TRAVEL.AYUTTHAYA

TRAVEL.AYUTTHAYA

Story by Lisa Lee Photos by Keith Leung and Lisa Lee

Located just an hour from Bangkok, Ayutthaya makes for a perfect day trip. But how can you see the best this ancient town has to offer in just one day? Here are a few suggestions on how to make the most of your time.

In its heyday during the 15th and 16th centuries, Ayutthaya was one of the greatest cities in the world. Benefitting from prosperous trading links with the Arab world, Europe and the Far East, its streets and marketplaces were graced with imposing temples and royal palaces. Today, much of that grandeur is gone but the charm remains and while many of the temples are now merely relics of their former self, the city is well worth a visit.

Tuk tuks are a fast and convenient way to get around the many sights of Ayutthaya.

One of the best ways to explore Ayutthaya on your own is to rent a bike; head east to the Ayutthaya Railway Station where bicycles are readily available for hire. The quality of the bikes on offer varies, so it’s a good idea to take one for a test ride. To rent a bike is

cheap – just 40 baht for a whole day and most of the shops open in the early morning, so you can get the most out of the day as you’re not required to return the bike until nightfall.

Today, much of that grandeur is gone but the charm remains and while many of the temples are now merely relics of their former self, the city is well worth a visit. 1000 WORDS / SHUTTERSTOCK.COM

Given Ayutthaya’s location on the river, the city has a proud tradition for barges and a lively river trade.

1000 WORDS / SHUTTERSTOCK.COM

Ayuthaya grew on the back of trade, which was conducted along the river. Today the river is a great way to get a feel for the town.

Located on the Chao Phraya River, Ayutthaya has a proud boat-making tradition, with many of the royal barges having been made here in the former capital. While today’s barges are mostly made in Bangkok, it’s still possible to see the old techniques at the Thai Boat Museum, located across the King Naresuan Maharaj Bridge, along Ho Rattanachai road. Surrounded by well-kept, tropical gardens, the museum is part of the private home of Professor Paitoon Khawmala and his wife, Rattana; the elderly couple are more than happy to give you a tour of the exhibition, which contains traditional Thai boats and models of royal barges. Khun Paitoon was a professor at the Technical School of Shipbuilding and it’s his hope that the museum will help educate people about Thailand’s proud shipbuilding tradition.

Just around the corner from the Thai Boat Museum you’ll find one of the famous landmarks of Ayutthaya: Wat Mahathat. The temple is perhaps most famous for its Buddha head which is lodged in the roots of a large tree close to the entrance. The head is in fact one of the few remaining at the temple – most of the Buddha images were destroyed when the Burmese invaded Ayutthaya in 1767, their heads cut off as a way of adding insult to injury. Behind the temple is a picturesque lake and park, perfect for a spin on the bike.

Rice barge on display at the Thai Boat Museum.

In its heyday during the 15th and 16th centuries, Ayutthaya was one of the greatest cities in the world. Benefitting from prosperous trading links with the Arab world, Europe, and the Far East...

Make your way across town to Wat Phra Si Sanphet, set within the old palace grounds where it functioned as the royal chapel. Two of the three iconic, bellshaped stupas were built in 1448 by order of King Boromatrailokanat, while a third was added at a later stage, together with a 16-metre gold-covered Buddha image that the Burmese melted down and stole when they invaded.

Clockwise from top: Sai mai is Ayutthaya’s most famous snack and there is a road dedicated entirely to shops selling these famous pancakes; sweets at the night market along Bang Lan road; Bang Lan road gets busy in the late afternoon when the vendors start to set up; a lady cuts kanom krok at the night market.

It’s believed that King Rama I gathered the remains and brought them to Bangkok where he placed them in the chedi at Wat Po. If you’re feeling extra energetic, swing past the Wat Loyakayasutharam and its giant reclining Buddha. The site isn’t as impressive as Wat Mahathat or Wat Phra Si Sanphet, but the sheer size of the Buddha image is.

By now you’ve probably worked up an appetite, so from Wat Loyakayasutharam follow the Chao Phraya River along the western and southern bank until you reach the so-called ‘Roti Road’ along U-Thong Road near Ayutthaya Hospital. The road takes its name from the many stalls serving Ayutthaya’s most famous dish, roti sai mai, a light pancake wrapped around thin, colourful strands of sugar not dissimilar to cotton candy. To the uninitiated, all the stalls seem to sell the same thing but that’s far from the truth – each stall claims to be the best, following decades-old recipes, so go ahead and try a few different ones; you might be surprised. Finish the day at the bustling night market along Bang Lan Road. Despite its modest size, the market has an impressive collection of Thai comfort food and snacks, including moo ping, satay, kanom krok and phad thai.

TRAVEL.TAKUA PA

TRAVEL.TAKUA PA

Located on Route 4 north of Khao Lak in Phang Nga Province, the quiet little town of Takua Pa is known as being a transit point for travellers catching buses further afield. However, Takua Pa is unique in its own right and well worth a visit. Nestled by the Yan Yao River, Takua Pa was once a famous international port. Traders began to arrive in the 1300s, and by the late 1800s the town was booming thanks to the tin mining industry.

Takua Pa was an important tin dredging area during those days, and the town saw an influx of Chinese migrants as well as Dutch, Portuguese and British traders. When tin prices began to fall in the 1900s, the traders moved on but the Chinese community stayed and assimilated into Thai society. Chinese culture is evident everywhere you look in Takua Pa. There are a handful of intricate Chinese pagodas as well as a few old Chinese-style tea and herb shops. Chinese-style red lanterns line most of the streets and many of the local families are of mixed Thai-Chinese heritage.

Street mural in Takua Pa Old Town.

Sino-Portuguese architecture in Takua Pa Old Town enhances the charm of the small town.

The entire Takua Pa district is a really interesting place to explore. There are a lot of historic buildings, a fascinating old library filled with black-and-white photos from the tin mining era, as well as many Chinese temples, shrines and Buddhist wats. Old camp walls line the outskirts of the Old Town; built to surround a governor’s residence in the 1800s, the walls make for a rugged yet peaceful scene of urban decay. Takua Pa street scenes include intricately painted murals, cute places to take photographs and market vendors.

Takua Pa Old Town dates all the way back to the 13th century and is a cultural enclave filled with loads of history and ancient Thai culture. A wander through the historic old district affords the opportunity to examine the beautiful Sino-Portuguese architecture, artsy little street art murals and interesting shops, as well as to mix with the locals who, although quite shy, are full of smiles.

Exploring Chinese pagodas and temples in Takua Pa is interesting and educational.

Every Sunday, there is a classic market on Sri Takua Pa Street in the heart of Takua Pa Old Town. The street begins to buzz in the late afternoon, and the market comes to life. Local vendors sell fresh fruit, gooey desserts, a variety of grilled meats and classic Thai iced tea and coffee. The food is fresh and affordable; do try the caramel-graham waffle cookies. These cookies are a local speciality and absolutely delightful.

The market’s atmosphere is laid back with one-ofa-kind souvenirs including vintage postcards, ‘Takua Pa My Home’ T-shirts and Chinese lacquer ware for sale. Many of the vendors set up shop in front of their homes and, if you’re lucky, you may be invited inside to examine old photographs and listen to Thai country and western music. The Sunday Market on Sri Takua Pa Street is really quite charming, and the perfect way to wind down a day of sightseeing.

Slow life in Takua Pa

The days of the tin mining industry in Takua Pa are now gone and expansive plantations and rubber tree farms have taken its place in the local economy.

Charming Sino-Portuguese architecture in Takua Pa Sri Takua Pa Street Market is held every Sunday a good way to experience local life.

The bridge is located on private property but has become a popular stop-off point for day trippers taking photographs and selfies.

A big part of the allure of Takua Pa is actually getting there. Nature is abundant in Phang Nga Province, and the road passes through a lot of rural and natural landscapes. By observing the traditional local lifestyle of the small villages and coastal towns, one notices that life moving along to a slower tempo here. GETTING THERE

Sightseeing in Takua Pa is become more popular with the younger crowd.

From Khao Lak, head north on Route 4 to Takua Pa. Route 4 first reaches the new town. It is approximately seven kilometres further to the Old Town. Buses and taxis run frequently between Khao Lak and Takua Pa and a round trip costs approximately 600 baht. If you have your own transport and head to Takua Pa Old Town for the Sunday market, well-marked street signs will guide you where to park.

Equally fascinating is Khok Kanoon Bridge, used by tin mining workers in the olden days. The bridge is located on private property but has become a popular stop-off point for day trippers taking photographs and selfies. This antique iron bridge crosses the Yan Yao River and if you come from Takua Pa Old Town, cross the bridge and keep going straight you will come to the Takua Pa bus station. A visit to Takua Pa would not be complete without sampling the district’s original Thai iced coffee. Locally known as ‘gafe bolan’ this ancient recipe is brewed from robust, full-flavoured beans and the coffee is served with whipped cream on top and garnished with anise. This Thai iced coffee is found in nearly all of the shops in Takua Pa and makes for a refreshing treat while sightseeing.

farms have taken its place in the local economy. The countryside is brightly verdant and the small roads twist and turn at a leisurely pace. Local fruit vendors ply their wares along major roads. Takua Pa is old, historical and charming. A day exploring the quiet town is truly a cultural affair that provides insight into a former booming port town that was once famous for being one of the most cosmopolitan places in all of Southern Thailand. A daytrip to Takua Pa is well worth the effort. Start off from Phuket early, and don’t forget to take your camera.

PEOPLE.ALAN R. COOKE MBE

57

Alan R. Cooke MBE U nderwater construction expert, author of professional manuals, ex RE Sapper, paratrooper, UK Honorary Consul, journalist, cricketer of note, Hash House Harrier, Johnnyon-the-spot after the twin disasters of the tsunami and the One-two-Go air crash, Member of the British Empire (MBE), businessman, life-saver, self-styled “journo”, “bullshit” detector and foe of all things phony. You may well ask: How many people are being described here? The answer is one: Alan R. Cooke MBE. Now into his 80th year and survivor, not only of countless dives, but more recently of massive heart surgery which he characteristically dismisses as getting “a new cow’s heart valve and four by-passes”, it is our good fortune that he recently decided to chronicle this extraordinary life in his autobiography, reviewed on the following page.

Alan’s first visit to Phuket in 1986 was to supervise the complex underwater construction of the quay wall of the Deep Sea Port at Cape Panwa – a project which he recently revisited and which is still in great shape. But there’s no substitute for a face-to-face meeting… Alan casts his mind back to his first year in the army as a sapper, when he attended and passed three trade courses, one of which was a Royal Navy air diving course to 180ft depth. “I volunteered for every available course, including the diving one,” he says. That decision effectively defined his working life – he rapidly became an expert in the dark arts of marine diving for various construction projects.

If ‘retirement’ to Phuket in 1994 was intended as a retreat into obscurity, it proved the exact opposite. An astute businessman, he established Island Furniture with his Thai partner Siriporn in 1997. For many years he worked for Halcrow and Partners, travelling all over the world from Libya pre-Gadhafi to Dubai, the Seychelles, Ghana, Indonesia and many more, always learning on the job, and pioneering new procedures along the way. As he says, “Always based on careful advance attention to detail, essential in all diving and construction matters.” A jewel in the company crown. Alan’s first visit to Phuket in 1986 was to supervise the complex underwater construction of the quay wall of the Deep Sea Port at Cape Panwa – a project which he

recently revisited and which is still in great shape. That achievement he rates simply as one of many underwater construction projects he has undertaken.

As the founder and President (in his capacity as UK Honorary Consul) of the team responsible for getting yacht import duty in Thailand reduced to zero – an act of huge commercial benefit to Phuket – Alan has not always bothered to seek credit for this achievement. If ‘retirement’ to Phuket in 1994 was intended as a retreat into obscurity, it proved the exact opposite. An astute businessman, he established Island Furniture with his Thai partner Siriporn in 1997 – still fully operational and the location for this interview – then built The Courtyard, an adjacent office block of 31 units, two years later. As Alan is keen to emphasise, Siriporn has always been beside him: partner, aide and supporter. As the founder and President (in his capacity as UK Honorary Consul) of the team responsible for getting yacht import duty in Thailand reduced to zero – an act of huge commercial benefit to Phuket – Alan has not always bothered to seek credit for this achievement. “It’s a matter of record. Should others like to invent fairy tales – it’s up to them to make fools of themselves and be laughed at behind their back,” he says.

Alan founded the Phuket Hash House Harriers when he was here in 1986, an organisation which has gone from strength to strength in the last 28 years, and continues to flourish today. Still on boating, and enthusiastic about major events on the island, Alan invested in Image Asia Events, providing substantial backing for the annual Phuket boat show (PIMEX) founded by that company. Alan founded the Phuket Hash House Harriers when he was here in 1986, an organisation which has gone from strength to strength in the last 28 years, and continues to flourish today. He was also the founder of the now-defunct British Business Association of Phuket and donated the land for the picturesque Alan Cooke Cricket Ground – which featured its inaugural game in November 2011. Few, if any, have done more to shape this island as we know it than Alan Cooke. However his MBE award citation stated simply: “For services to Thailand at the time of the Tsunami”.

Our Man in Phuket the book

E

verything on the previous page – and much more – is contained in the pages of Our Man in Phuket. Alan is no elegant prose stylist, not interested in the niceties of language. But then he wouldn’t want to be. Much of the book’s impact and immediacy comes from his demotic, “tell it as it is” approach. The years roll back as he refers to ”nooky”, “birds”, “piss-ups”, “ prats” and “tom-tits”, or the “doodlebugs” that blew away half of his grandmother’s Paddington house. Ever the pragmatist, his response to his future wife’s marriage ultimatum outside Marble Arch tube station is, “Oh shit” before muttering “Oh, all right then.” The arrival of his first-born elicits the comment: “just another sprog… keeping me poor for the next 20 years”. An earthy sense of humour allied to a wry capacity for selfdeprecation pervades the memoir. Alan notes, for example, that “a good diver’s hand linesman should be able to feel every move his diver makes, especially when he farts.”

The Lake House

When deciding on where to live in Phuket, his house’s location had to meet the “triple D” factor: the “Drunken Driving Distance” that he could manage from bar to home without mishap. His own gaffes, mainly small social ones, are those of a “plonker”. Ever willing to take on challenges, he volunteers – admittedly for a sizeable fee and a bottle of brandy – to bring ashore a decayed corpse in Ghanaian waters full of rotting fish and where visibility is absolute “zero.“ Marooned in Kuwait at the time of Saddam Hussein’s invasion, he organises the escape of a group of expats to Saudi Arabia. As with most endeavours in his life, Alan succeeds. For most readers, the most captivating parts of the memoir are about Phuket – which he adores – and to which he has contributed so much, despite the “file and forget” attitude of officialdom, which he frequently manages to circumvent. Describing his sojourn on the island as his “fantasy life”, settling here effectively ends his 38 year marriage to Marie. The abrupt termination still gives him pangs of remorse. But ever the pragmatist, Alan finds a Thai partner, who wins him over by selling him a mattress for five times what he intended to pay. Alan and Siriporn are still together. With characteristic generosity, he built a walled compound where nine members of his extended family live to this day.

Alan R. Cooke MBE If the book has a weakness, it resides in its rather slap-happy grammar and syntax. Nothing a decent edit could not fix – if this fascinating book ever runs to a second edition. And an index would be useful. But these are minor cavils. On the credit side, Alan’s own sketches of underwater projects, coupled with photographs, add variety to the sprightly text, and the contributions from “outsiders” – particularly the correspondence between Alan and various troubled expat “nutters”, is hilarious. All in all, this is a book that pulls no punches, a read as entertaining and plain-speaking as the man himself. Our Man in Phuket by Alan R. Cooke MBE is published by Kris Books

LEGAL MATTERS.DANGEROUS ACTIVITIES

LEGAL MATTERS.DANGEROUS ACTIVITIES

Dangerous activities

It is also important to note that, in 2015, the Thai government promulgated a new law to monitor operators of “amusement equipment” in amusement or theme parks. The law is entitled Ministerial Regulation re: control on amusement equipment B.E. 2558 (2015), effective 24 April 2015 (“Ministerial Regulation”). The Ministerial Regulation was drafted to improve safety measures for such equipment. It provides rules, measures and conditions in construction, permission to use, inspection methods, safety measures as well qualifications of the materials used for, or necessary related parts of, the amusement equipment.

Phuket is one of the most famous places in Thailand when it comes to choosing where to go for that special vacation. The island offers many beautiful beaches and outdoor activities for simple relaxation or more adventurous fun.

Under this Ministerial Regulation, “amusement equipment” means a construction built for play in an amusement park or similar, which consists of a “main structure” and “supporting structure”, and has any of the following: (i) movement which causes the user to move with a speed of not less than 5 metres per second; (ii) the height between the ground where the amusement equipment is situated and the highest point where the user goes up to is not less than 2.50 meters; (iii) not less than 15 horsepower (11 kilowatts) of mechanical power; or (iv) water is needed for some parts of the amusement equipment in order to operate and the water depth shall not be less than 0.80 meters.

If you decide to enjoy your time in Phuket engaging in sports or activities which are considered dangerous – for example bungee jumping, parasailing, hang-gliding, scuba diving or renting jet-skis – you might wonder, if anything goes wrong and causes damage to your health and/or property, or even results in loss of life of your friends or family, how will you recover compensation in Thailand. According to Sections 420 and 437 of the Thai Civil and Commercial Code (“CCC”), if you are injured or your property is damaged by taking part in any of those activities, and if you can prove that the damage occurred due to faulty equipment (by their mechanical action), the operator, who willfully or negligently injures you, will be liable to compensate for the damages.

In Thailand, an operator of those dangerous activities is not required by law to have a third party liability insurance, except in the case of amusement or theme parks, as mentioned below. However, if they have one, and your claim for damages is covered by the insurance policy, then you may be able to sue the insurer as another party in a claim in the event that the operator refuses to pay.

Even with all the protections of law in place, there can be no replacement for common sense and checking the licenses, insurance and competence of the operator of any dangerous sport activity or amusement park equipment. Desmond Hughes

You must also check your own insurance package to see whether the insurance covers you for damages occurred while participating in these dangerous sports. Normally, such activities are excluded or attract a higher premium. Please also note that

In Thailand, an operator of those dangerous activities is not required by law to have third party liability insurance, except in the case of amusement or theme parks. negligence and use of alcohol or intoxicating substances, or even prescription drugs, may exclude claims. You may have noticed that most operators of dangerous activities generally make an announcement, or even ask you to sign a form before you carry out any activity, specifying that they will not be liable or they will have restricted liability for any damages incurred as a result of any action deliberately or negligently committed by them in relation to the activities. In Thai law, such terms and/ or announcements cannot be raised as an exclusion or restriction of the liability of the operators. The operators are liable for any damages incurred, according to Section 8 of the Unfair Contract Terms Act, B.E. 2540 (1997). With the above in mind, if you expect to take part in any of these dangerous activities, you should first look for the most suitable insurance plans for yourself, carefully check the equipment (to the extent that is possible) before taking part and verify with the operators whether they have taken out insurance for third party liability.

Any construction, demolition or relocation of amusement equipment must be carried out after obtaining approval from the Tessabaan (Municipality Office). An operator is required to have insurance for third party liability with the insured amount as specified in the Ministerial Regulation.

Some of those dangerous activites mentioned above may fall under this Ministerial Regulation if the equipment is considered “amusement equipment” under the Ministerial Regulation. With this Ministerial Regulation, those taking part will be ensured that there are safety standards and they will be protected from accidents when they play at an amusement park. Even with all the protections of law in place, there can be no replacement for common sense and checking the licenses, insurance and competence of the operator of any dangerous sport activity or amusement park equipment. It is notable that accidents have occurred in other countries such as the U.K. in recent times at amusement parks, and therefore it must be accepted that there is an inherent risk in using any such equipment in any country, including Thailand. The owner or the possessor of amusement equipment which has been operated and owned prior to the effective date of the Ministerial Regulation will also be required to comply, so there is some retrospective effect of this Ministerial Regulation.

The CCC allows the injured to claim for a wide range of expenses incurred, which includes medical treatment as well as the loss of earnings on account of disability to work. The claim for damages arising from a wrongful act is barred by prescription – which means a time limit, after one year from the day when both the wrongful act and the person bound to make compensation became known to the injured person, according to Section 448 of the CCC. You must therefore be very careful not to delay too long or forget about this time limit when negotiating compensation.

TRAVEL.PERANAKAN TRADITIONS IN PHUKET

Baba Nyonya cuisine is a must try

Explore the Peranakan traditions of Phuket Old Town and you will definitely see another charming side to local life on the island.

Traditional Peranakan attire is often spotted on the streets of Phuket Old Town. Batik sarong wraparound skirts, lacy button-up Kebaya blouses, and intricate beaded slippers are worn by many Phuket Baba ladies as they stroll about town tending to their daily business. During special occasions, such as the Phuket Old Town Festival, as well as birthdays and weddings, most of the Peranakan community wears traditional clothing in celebration of their heritage.

Baba cuisine encompasses the very best ingredients of Royal Thai Cuisine, local Hokkien Chinese food, simple Thai dishes and Malay favourites.

Recently, Phuket was deemed a ‘City of Gastronomy’ by UNESCO, and this prestigious honour was no doubt bestowed due to the delicious flavours of Phuket Baba cuisine. Baba cuisine encompasses the very best ingredients of Royal Thai Cuisine, local Hokkien Chinese food, simple Thai dishes and Malay favourites. The combined flavours deliver a taste that is not too spicy, not too sweet and not too salty – and the dishes deliver a unique blend of delicious Asian fusion food.

Traditional Peranakan dress

Due to the constant preservation of the local Peranakan traditions, heritage tourism is booming in Phuket. The interesting history and culture of Phuket Old Town, along with the unique architecture of the Sino-Portuguese shop-houses and mansions where wealthy Phuket Babas lived, have all opened a gateway to cultural tourism on the island. Explore the Peranakan traditions of Phuket Old Town and you will definitely see another charming side to local life on the island.

There are a wide variety of small restaurants and cafés in the Old Town quarter that serve Baba cuisine. Popular dishes include moo hong (salted boiled pork), mee hokkien (stir-fried Hokkien noodles) and yum som o (Thai pomelo salad with marinated shrimp and roasted coconut flakes). Unique to Peranakan family recipes, these culinary delights provide insight into the local culture while delivering a delicious, one-of-a-kind meal.

Wat Koh Siray

PHUKET

84 E6

Wat Koh Siray, with its golden reclining Buddha, sits on a hilltop from which there are spectacular views of Rassada Harbour and adjacent islands on the one side and views of rubber plantations on the other. It also overlooks the picturesque Sea Gypsy village of Laem Tuk-Kae. From the road you climb up a staircase flanked by huge dragons. The outside temple hall is surrounded by other Buddha images that you can walk around.

Parasailing & Paragliding

Sea Canoes

Ever wish you could fly like a bird, soaring and diving effortlessly with the wind in your face, and experience views of this beautiful island from a new and exciting perspective? Phuket now offers you the chance to do exactly this. It’s called parasailing. The parasail is a specially designed parachute which you wear, and which is then towed behind a speedboat; suddenly you are airborne and looking down on mere mortals. There are several operators on beaches and prices start at 2,000 baht.

Sea Canoes make a silent exploration of beautiful tidal sea caves and remote tropical coastlines, promoting alternative non-polluting marine leisure activity. Professional guides and attention to safety standards make the whole delightful experience convenient and safe, even for young children.

Phuket Aquarium

116 G2

Whether you confine yourself to a walk along the beach or engage in swimming, snorkelling and scubadiving, there’s no doubt that marine-related activities are one of the prime attractions for visitors to Phuket. For those who are inclined to do their research in a more leisurely style, or who would like to know more about Phuket’s surrounding waters and its marine life, the Phuket Aquarium is the answer. The aquarium, which is also a marine life research centre, is located right on the tip of Cape Panwa and is a 13-kilometre drive from Phuket City. There’s a local bus service to the aquarium, which leaves Ranong Road daily from 9am to 3pm, every hour.

Sapan Hin

95 D4

This is a public park located by the sea at the end of Phuket Road. There’s an old dredgershaped monument called (somewhat unimaginatively) the ‘60 Year Mine Monument’, which was built on the headland at the southern end of Phuket Road in 1969. This monument commemorates one Captain Edward Thomas Miles, an Australian who brought the first metal ore-dredger to Phuket in 1909, hence the ‘60 year’ bit. In former times, Sapan Hin was regarded as the gateway of Phuket because the promontory was the chief trading port for freighters. As time went by, more land was reclaimed and developed into parks and public facilities, which now include a sports centre, large playing fields, restaurants and the island’s main boxing stadium. It’s also the site of two colleges – Phuket Community College and Phuket Vocational College.

Weekend market

The most popular weekend market, about 1km south of Central Festival, is officially called ‘Chao Fa Variety’ but is universally referred to by its Thai name ‘Talad Tai Rot’. There you’ll find a bewildering choice – everything from clothes to electronics. If you’re after handicraft items like tooled leather goods, Buddha images or second-hand books, you’ll not be disappointed. And if you’re hungry, there’s a huge selection of Thai snacks – all freshly prepared on the spot. The market opens at 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays − when it's cooler. It’s a good idea to arrive early to avoid the crowds and traffic. Car parking can be a challenge.

Every day many Phuket residents visit Sapan Hin to jog or just to enjoy walking along the mangrove-lined paths. In the evenings people turn out to play tennis, basketball, volleyball, soccer, lawn bowling and takraw. Others come to picnic and enjoy snacks and drinks available from the small market. At the south end of Sapan Hin is the Kiew Tian Shrine, which plays a significant role in the annual Phuket Vegetarian Festival; all the street processions end here. To get to Saphin Hin just hop in a Tuk- Tuk or taxi; they all know it.
