But how many are there? Where are they? Which is the most beautiful? Why? On this page, and on Page 12, you'll find most of Phuket's beaches. The number in the blue circle corresponds to the same number on the Page 12 map, making it easy to plan your beach itinerary. We recommend renting a car – and driving carefully!

PEOPLE.MICHAEL NURBATLIAN
21
Thoroughly modern renaissance man
Michael Nurbatlian
M
ichael Nurbatlian strode across the lounge, all welcoming smiles, and asked me if I needed a coffee or tea. That set the tone for a relaxed and engaging chat, with a contrasting backdrop provided by a turbulent Andaman Sea, its breakers pounding the granite boulders beyond the vast infinity pool. For this was Kata Rocks, one of Phuket’s iconic resorts, with its 34 sky villas, perched on a rocky promontory directly overhanging the infinite ocean. ‘Infinity’ is a keyword here. For the sky is literally the limit in terms of the resort’s aim to please its exclusive clientele; Michael’s position is marketing director of ‘Infinite Luxury’, the cutting-edge design and development company which operates the flagship resort. He has come a long way in a relatively short space of time; proof that youth – Michael is 30 – is no barrier to giddy heights when you have the passion, the application and the intellect to go with the ambition. Michael has an unusually cosmopolitan background. A member of a distinguished Armenian family who moved to Beirut in the late 19th century, his father – whom he refers to as his ‘best friend’ – was the Lebanese Ambassador to Thailand. So it was hardly a cause for surprise that Michael should decide to pursue his career here. Schooled in Switzerland, he thinks in French and speaks impeccable English, but the culture with which he identifies most closely is that of Buddhist Thailand and oriental philosophy. He also speaks Armenian and Arabic. Originally he thought about becoming an architect, for Michael has a lifelong interest in the visual and arts, but decided on marketing after a BA in Political Science at the American University in Beirut. Then followed an MBA – the qualification which has unlocked so many doors for so many future CEOs – at the prestigious Glion Institute of Higher Education in Montreux, Switzerland. The topic? “The Impact of Digital Branding on Guest Loyalty in Luxury Hotels in Thailand.” After that, Phuket – with its high-end hotels and life-style resorts – was a natural destination. Michael has broadened his professional experience with remarkable assiduity. First at the Millennium and Copthorne Hotel chain starting 2008, then at Indigo Pearl (2010-11), followed by a spell at Intercontinental Hotels (2011-2012). A longer period (2012-2016) found him with the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group – at the Legendary, 140-year-old, The Oriental Hotel – as the Director of eCommerce and Digital Marketing. Only in post here for three months, Michael is clearly a Kata Rocks devotee. He waxes enthusiastic about the state of the art spa with its eight treatment rooms, sublime aromatherapy, innovative chromotherapy (or colour therapy) and water bed treatments for spinal ailments. And we visit the temperature controlled wine cellar which features hundreds of prestigious bottles and has a unique system for enjoying a glass, by deploying a credit card to select wine from one of the many brands on display. A technological marvel.

Working with a team of five dedicated Thai marketers, Michael’s primary concern is to develop guest allegiance to the image of ‘Infinite Luxury’, by ensuring that its flagship Kata Rocks consolidates its role as a luxury resort leader through brand and digital marketing, PR strategies, by developing better distribution systems, by refining search, booking and reservation engines and even exploring the emerging Chinese market. Glancing upwards at a TV showing silent images of great cuisine and views, he opines that at this exalted five-star level, this is an effectively subliminal way to go – above strident discounts and hard sells. The team issues its own monthly ‘Kata Rocks Journal’, which keeps readers alongside with the website, up-to-date with upcoming events, activities and promotions. Obviously, there is also a Facebook page. ‘Infinite Luxury’ has also branched out into the area of designing, yachting rendezvous, and is also realising and managing luxury property projects by offering its expertise to interested investors. In Michaels’ capable hands, the brand will surely continue to grow and flourish.
He has come a long way in a relatively short space of time; proof that youth - Michael is thirty - is no barrier to giddy heights when one has the passion, the application and the intellect to go with the ambition. Michael’s range of personal interests is eclectic. A keen supporter of animal rights and wildlife protection, sustainable development and environmental issues, he puts his money where his mouth is, having eliminated meat from his diet and following a predominantly plant-based lifestyle. Unsurprisingly, he is a keen keep-fit enthusiast, a contributor to various charities and an assiduous member of Rotary International. Like so many of us, Michael fears for the future of a nature endangered by the global ‘apres moi, le deluge’ ideology. He argues, with conviction, that Phuket Island needs a policy of systematic regulations based on long-term urban planning, instead of piecemeal projects involving ‘soft’ targets which do little to protect or preserve our fragile natural environment. Perhaps, Michael agrees, businesses too could do more to encourage sustainability. Not short of self-belief, Michael is a frequent speaker at conferences and hospitality industry events, where his expertise in the fields of luxury branding, and his experience of digital marketing strategies to increase customer engagement and brand loyalty, can reach a wider and interested public. Judging by my experience today, he has no difficulty in captivating and engaging an audience – of one or a hundred.

BOATS.CAPE PANWA HOTEL PHUKET RACEWEEK
23
A record-setting 2016
Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek Photos by Scott Murray/ Phuket Raceweek 2016 was perhaps one of the toughest Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweeks. The line-up of 47 boats was a record and the diversity of nationalities – more than 25 in total – was impressive. However, conditions made the 13th event the most challenging with sailors encountering light winds, strong currents, testing swells, and 180-degree wind-shifts. Held from 20 to 24 July off the southeast coast of Phuket, Raceweek was headquartered at the Cape Panwa Hotel with most of the fleet anchoring offshore enjoying the beachfront hospitality.
Close racing in the Cruising / Charter class saw everything poised for a final day showdown. However, with racing called off in the afternoon of the final day due to lack of wind, Remington was crowned class winner by a single point from BeauX Esprits in second and Venture in third.
The organisers and title sponsor Cape Panwa Hotel delivered four lavish beachside parties with copious amounts of food and drink for the 500+ participants. It all kicked off with a Caribbean-themed opening party sponsored by Mount Gay Rum and finished with a lavish gala dinner presided over by Mr. Kalin Sarasin of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, and Admiral Kraisorn Chansuvanich, President of the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand.
New for this year was the Platu One Design class. Racing with identical sails, these pocket-rockets enjoyed some bow-to-bow racing and after four races it was the Singapore entry Phuket Boat Lagoon Weasel that came on top, one point ahead of Phuket Boat Lagoon Fox with Absolute One Design third.
On the water standards were equally high, with a race management team lead by the unflappable World Sailing International Race Officer, Simon James, who spent more hours than anyone searching for wind, setting race courses, and timing the last boats home. ADVERTORIAL
Across the eight classes this year the racing was close. With just two grand prix yachts in IRC Racing I class it was a chance for these TP52s to get some early points on the board for the 2016/17 AsianYachting Grand Prix championship, and a chance to see where they are at with their boat optimisation programmes. Competing for the second time was Ray Roberts and his crew on Millennium Racing who managed to get the better of past winner Peter Ahern and his crew on Oi! In IRC Racing II it was a competition of four Beneteau yachts against three others, and this time round it was the ‘others’ that sealed it. Phuket-based Australian, Scott Bradley, skippered Emagine to a one-point win over David Dimmock’s Singapore entry Loco, with Gust, skippered by Ben Copley, securing third. It was a tough battle in IRC Racing III between an Australian crew who chartered the Mumm 30 Foreign Affair and Dane Niels Degenkolw and his Thai crew on Phoenix and by the end of the series Phoenix finished three points clear of Foreign Affair with Sailescape’s Farrgo Express in third.
There were 19 multihulls competing over three classes. Winning three out of four, Alan Carwardine’s Asia Catamarans Hurricane defended their title from John Coffin’s Java and Peter Wood’s Top Cat. Also defending his title, John Newnham on Twin Sharks raced in the Firefly 850 Sport one-design class and won with a comfortable three-point victory over Voodoo in second and Blue Noze in third. The Corsair class saw four identical Corsair Pulse 600s on the start line and Mick Tilden on Pixalux won by seven points from SuDu 4 who won the tie-break from Zam Bevan’s Multihull Solutions H30 in third. Now in its 13th year, Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek is aging gracefully and this year welcomed a record fleet. Also encouraging is the number of Thai sailors taking part, making up 20% of the fleet this year. While the fickle wind made it tough for all, the onshore facilities and services were excellent while the race management team did an excellent job in trying circumstances. The 14th Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek will take place from 19 to 23 July, 2017. CAPE PANWA HOTEL PHUKET RACEWEEK www.phuketraceweek.com.

Details of the refit have not been revealed, however those interested in learning more about Sanlorenzo’s interior capabilities can visit her this December at Ao Po Grand Marina.
The new 47ft boasts incredible living space as well and is available in two layouts — a 3-cabin Owner version, and a 5-cabin Charter version. This versatility, combined with her cruising capabilities and Fountaine Pajot’s pedigree for excellence, makes the new 47ft the perfect catamaran for the Asian market. If you are interested and wish to get in touch with Multihull Solutions, contact Rachel at: rachel@multihullsolutions.com.

to language: My very first contact with Thai nationals happened years ago during an internship in the United States. For a year we worked side-by-side on a small international team with three Thais and everyone adored them: they were kind, witty and welcoming people. However, a tiny issue dogged them like a shadow: most of the time no one could comprehend
much of what they were saying! Being a linguist with a few languages under my belt, I was shocked by my Thai colleagues’ spoken English skills. Though their written expressions were almost perfect, when they opened their mouths their English magically turned into a cryptic language similar to the one made up by J.R.R. Tolkien in his Lord of the Rings trilogy.

LIVEING.A FUN GUIDE TO LANGUAGE
LIVEING.A FUN GUIDE TO LANGUAGE
Basically, most of the time, while you don’t quite understand what your smiling waiter is saying, it’s safe to assume he is ‘swallowing’ the second half of words. So in pursuing clarity, slow down and repeat the key one(s) while accentuating their second half (“You mean, how is my wiNe or my wiFe?”). Also, spelling important words out often helps. As I’ve already mentioned, Thais’ pronunciation conceals their knowledge and, unless beginners, they tend to read and write with more understanding than you would assume.
?
‘Thaiglish’ pronunciation – when you don’t understand what’s being said. Two problems arise when talking to Thais in English: One is the accent dilemma, as most locals apply Thai rules when pronouncing English, and the other is a vast difference in grammar and sentence structure. Some of us who’ve settled in Thailand have learned to break into those insights and have adapted accordingly. But I’ve discovered that in order to avoid comical and frustrating scenarios, most English-language native speakers could well benefit from a few language tips. As an English-language teacher here for about two years before becoming a writer, I quickly identified a few problem areas.

?
Proper English – when you are the one who’s being misunderstood.
Language tip My English students were all adults, typically placed into one of three groups: Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced. Yet, I quickly learned that pronunciation was a problem of the same intensity at all levels. In fact, I found that it was easier to teach beginners how to speak properly than it was to correct those who were already fairly fluent – old habits die hard… But there was no way around it, so with patience worthy of an army officer, I created entire classes focused on pronunciation practice. Initially dreaded by my students, those classes quickly became rewarding little niches full of fun and laughter – and surprisingly, they turned out as valuable for me in my own study of Thai. You see, in Thai there are sounds that come about by joining consonants we know. Not only there are d’s and t’s but there are also their combinations of /dt/, there are p’s and b’s but also a mix: /bp/ and so on. Furthermore, there is an array of sounds that don’t get pronounced at the end of words – following a (Thai) rule that makes all t’s, d’s, n’s, and s’s almost silent. When applied to English, as we all know, this creates linguistic chaos. Imagine that what’s in brackets in the words below isn’t pronounced but that those exact words are indeed being referred to:
Language tip Ever asked for a knife at a Thai restaurant but got a napkin instead? It can be frustrating indeed… But each time you are misunderstood by a local, there are things you could’ve done to prevent that from happening. Firstly, although its alphabet is complex, thankfully Thai is a language with a simple sentence structure made up of subject-verb-object or an adverb. There are no articles, no tenses, and no plurals. In reality, if you’re having an important conversation with a local and measurement of some sorts is a crucial piece of information, I would suggest that you double- and triple-check that you really understand one another. For example, if a Thai colleague tells you: “I go to Phuket Tow(n) with my frien(d)”, it theoretically remains unclear whether they're referring to a single or several friends. Not only that, but this may be an invitation to go with them (tonight, tomorrow, next week) or simply a sharing that the event has already taken place. Some of those parameters may naturally reveal themselves through the context of the entire conversation and this is often the case. But when talking about quantity, however, I always accentuate TWO

menus or FIVE plates, and when talking about time I make sure my todays, yesterdays and tomorrows are clear as crystal as well. Furthermore, expressing politeness in these two languages is as different as night and day. While Thais add a polite ka/krab at the end of every single sentence, in addition to frequently smiling, wai-ing and nodding, in English we use long strings of words to express the same notion. But if we know that, in Thai, these points are achieved quickly, it is no surprise that expressions such as, “Would you be so kind as to…” or “Do you think we could possibly…?” are met with blank stares. All those words without even reaching the key one? Quite a challenge! In the end I wish you good luck and great experiences in The Land of Smiles. A knack for languages is a good talent to have, I’ll admit; but I also know that even the smallest of efforts to expand our communication skills is often vastly rewarding. Try adapting your English a bit while here and see what happens. It’ll often be for the good.

Phuket’s
Vegetarian Festival
Each year,at this time, the area around Phuket’s Fresh Market becomes congested with food stalls and everywhere is festooned with red lanterns and Chinese dragons, all centred on the Jui Tui shrine. One of the fascinating aspects of Phuket’s cultural traditions is the complex fusion of Chinese religious beliefs, with those of the original inhabitants of the island. It all began in the early 1900s, when tin ore was discovered in the Kathu area and hundreds of Hokkien Chinese were drafted in to do the mining. They either brought their families with them or intermarried with the locals. A thriving community blossomed and, in 1825, the Governor Praya Jerm moved the provincial capital from Ta Reua to Kathu.

TRAVEL.PHUKET S VEGETARIAN FESTIVAL
The Chinese community had such critical mass that an itinerant Chinese opera company visited to entertain them
An alternative explanation may be that since Kathu was a swampy jungle and it was the time of the monsoon rains, the visitors may have introduced a malarial strain – to which they themselves were immune – to the local mosquitoes, which thrived in the damp conditions. When the rains stopped the insects’ breeding ponds disappeared and the epidemic abated naturally. Be that as it may. The following year, the Haio Lan and Lian Tui regalia and sacred scripts were brought from China. When this precious cargo arrived at Bang Niao, the whole community went there to welcome the ship. The tradition of processions was thus born. On the first night of the ninth lunar month, the sacred 10-metre lantern pole is raised to facilitate the arrival of the gods, and at midnight, nine lanterns are suspended, one for each god. In a slightly anomalous add-on, the Hindu god Shiva is also believed to be present, and just to be on the safe side, offerings are also made to Lam Tao and Pak Tao. The festival then continues for nine more days with much burning of incense, banging of drums and letting off of fireworks to ward off evil spirits.
The Chinese community had such critical mass that an itinerant Chinese opera company visited to entertain them. Here the story gets a little confused, d, but basically the whole area was struck by a major epidemic and almost everybody except the operaa players became sick. Following their beliefs, the players had stuck to their religious calendar, which at this time of year required quired that they observe a strict vegetarian diet and offer prayers to two Chinese gods, Kiew Ong Tai Teh h and Yok Ong Sone Teh. The residents attributed their heir invulnerability to these religious observances. es.

One of the strange and even controversial aspects of the various processions is the activities of the Ma Song or ‘possessed horses’. These religious zealots transform themselves into a trancelike state and perform acts of mortification which range from climbing ladders with steel blades for rungs, walking across red hot coals and immersing themselves in hot oil. In a further, rather gruesome, practise, adherents pierce their faces and tongues with everything from skewers to bicycle spokes to axes. Oddly enough, this self mutilation results in little bleeding or subsequent scarring. Stranger than fiction. However it’s not for the queasy so probably best not to bring the kids! For most, however, the festival isn’t so fraught. Many restaurants and stalls all over the island will fly yellow banners decorated with red script, proclaiming that they are offering authentic vegetarian dishes – and they are delicious. Somehow the cooks manage to prepare dishes which are just as tasty as normal meaty fare, but without the meat.

Long tail boats can take you around the island on a half day trip
Koh Lipe may have lost its status as secluded paradise but there are still plenty of reasons to visit this beautiful island

Koh Lipe still wows with its white sandy beaches
Getting your bearings on Koh Lipe is easy. The island is tiny and it’s easy to walk from one beach to the next. The famous Walking Street
The small island of Koh Lipe in the southern Andaman Sea rose to fame in the early 1990s when its unspoilt white sand beaches drew travellers from near and afar. Staying in simple bamboo beach huts and managing on just a few hours of electricity each day, they spoke of paradise found. A lot has happened on Koh Lipe since then, but the island remains a popular island getaway for both Thais and foreigners. Getting your bearings on Koh Lipe is easy. beaches; by far the busiest beach is Pattaya Beach, where the water is calm for most of the year and the sand is deliciously fine. Pattaya Beach was the first to be developed and unfortunately also the first to become crowded, so expect a fair bit of hustle and bustle, not least after nightfall. Sunrise Beach is located, not surprisingly, on the long eastern side of the island and features a relaxed, laid-back vibe with very little going on after dark. On the northern coast, you will find the smaller Sunset Beach, which is home to a number of smaller, upscale resorts.

Restaurants, bars and shops centre on and around Walking Street, which connects Sunrise and Pattaya beaches. Here you’ll find everything from tattoo parlours and souvenir shops to seafood barbecue joints and cafes and restaurants serving western and Thai food. For a great cup of freshly brewed coffee and something to satisfy those afternoon sugar cravings, head to Kafair, a cosy café on Walking Street; try their pancakes with maple syrup or tuck into a bowl of homemade yogurt and muesli. For dinner, don't miss King Crab, also on Walking Street. Don't expect fancy surroundings or particularly attentive service; the focus here is on the seafood, which you choose from a display at the entrance. Simply point and tell them how you would like it prepared, then sit back and tuck into sea bass, snapper, tiger prawns, or the restaurant’s namesake, crabs.

One of the most popular dive sites is Stonehenge where large granite formations attract schools of barracudas and trevalliers as well as the occasional leopard shark or whale shark.
Given Koh Lipe's pristine waters, diving is a popular activity and several resorts and hotels offer PADI diving courses and dive trips to sites around Koh Lipe or surrounding Koh Adang, Koh Rawi or Koh Tong. One of the most popular dive sites is Stonehenge where large granite formations attract schools of barracudas and trevalliers as well as the occasional leopard shark or whale shark. If diving is not your thing, why not explore the waters around Koh Lipe from the deck of one of the many long-tail boats, so called after their makeshift motors, the propellers of which sit at the end of a long shaft. There are countless long-tail boats around the island just waiting to be chartered for a daytrip of swimming, snorkelling or simply exploring these tropical waters. A girl plays with a puppy on

MAGICAL
NATAI BEACH
It’s a magical spot as it’s not often you’ll find beach in Thailand with so little development.
Imagine a beach totally free of parasols and beach chairs as well as completely clear of strolling vendors; a beach where the white sand stretches as far as the eye can see and rolling waves gently kiss the shoreline. This beach does exist, and surprisingly, it’s not far from Phuket. Natai Beach is truly ‘Paradise Found’ and is just a short jaunt from Phuket’s iconic Sarasin Bridge.
In places, Natai Beach appears to be as wide as it is long. The shoreline is backed by large, tropical and casuarina trees accompanied by verdant vegetation. It’s a magical spot as it’s not often a beach with so little development is actually found in Thailand. Drinking in the natural beauty of Natai Beach is easy. Not only is it a gorgeous natural parcel of land, but often it’s nearly deserted, giving it a very exclusive beach holiday feel. Sunsets here are nothing short of stunning, and at any given time of year the skies put on a delightful show of oranges, purples, pinks and blues enhancing the already dramatic backdrop of this beach. The old, wooden Natai Beach bridge is a popular attraction in the area

Natai Bridge is a photographer’s dream. It’s an ideal spot and considerably photogenic once the sun begins to set.
The beach appears to stretch as far as the eye can see Local life around Natai Beach embraces the abundant nature of the area
Natai Beach hosts a public pier that’s the heart of the action in this peaceful area. The pier is busy early in the morning and just before sunset, as fishermen prepare to go out in boats in the early hours and bring their fresh catches back towards the end of the day. A lot of people also fish off of the pier while others take a stroll to stretch their legs. Although the pier is not very big or long you get a strong sense of community here, watching the local people meet and greet each other throughout the day.
Refreshingly, there are a number of rubbish bins placed in strategic spots along the 10km coastal stretch of Natai Beach, encouraging day trippers, locals and tourists to keep the beach clean. This little campaign is obviously working as Natai Beach is almost free of debris. The roads that wind to and from Natai Beach snake through tiny villages, shrimp farms, undeveloped land and towering palm trees. Every now and again, a farm hugs the narrow roads. People native to this part of Thailand are quite friendly. Theirs is a simple life that relies on natural resources, and most of the local village people we encountered were farmers or fishermen. You can expect loads of friendly smiles, waves and nods of the head when making the trek to the beach and there’s no need to worry if you find yourself lost, as the locals are very kind and quick to point you in the right direction.
Natai Beach holds another special treat in the form of Natai Bridge. An old wooden bridge that is no longer functional, Natai Bridge is a photographer’s dream. It’s an ideal spot and considerably photogenic once the sun begins to set. If you’re looking to snap that picture-perfect postcard moment with a camera or a smartphone, this is the quintessential landmark to frame your background. The bridge is located near a luxurious resort, but the beach is open to the public. Any local will enthusiastically give directions to Natai Bridge if asked. The narrow, winding roads to Natai Beach are hugged by shrimp farms

We recommend you stop at any number of these local haunts for steaming noodles, spicy curries, grilled meats and heaping plates of fried rice.
Located just a short drive over Phuket’s Sarasin Bridge, Natai Beach is a long, lovely stretch of undeveloped beach featuring white sands, towering trees, gently rolling waves and stunning scenery. It’s an idyllic location and offers a tremendous amount of solitude as well as a chance to appreciate nature. Natai Beach makes for a relaxing day trip from Phuket as it has a deserted island feel along Phang Nga’s gorgeous coast.
There’s not much in the way of food available at Natai Beach, although there’s a beachfront restaurant that offers a wide variety of Thai dishes and fresh seafood at affordable prices. There are also a variety of small local restaurants on the main road before turning off to Natai Beach. We recommend you stop at any number of these local haunts for steaming noodles, spicy curries, grilled meats and heaping plates of fried rice. All of the local restaurants are accustomed to takeaway orders and the few small convenience-type stores sell all other necessities, including bottled water, beach mats and snacks. Accommodation in and around the Natai Beach area tends to be high end. There’s a scattering of deluxe villas and private, four- and five-star resort accommodation choices around this area and access to these places is strictly off limits unless you’re a paying guest. A few budget bungalow accommodations can be found just near the beach and prices vary depending upon the season, but it’s best to keep in mind that none of this accommodation is fancy. In fact, most budget bungalows offer almost nothing in the way of amenities, only a bed to sleep on and washing facilities.
The wide open spaces of Natai Beach are a welcome attraction for locals and tourists alike
Getting there Natai Beach is easily accessible from Phuket International Airport and Sarasin Bridge. It’s located just 25km from the airport. Follow Route 402 north from Maikhao Dream Resort & Spa Natai Phang Nga until you reach Khok Kloi. Here, the road signs are well marked and will lead you directly to Natai Beach.
Natai Beach is quiet and undeveloped, making it the perfect relaxation spot and a peaceful day trip

Nakhon Pathom Our first stop was Nakhon Pathom, one of Thailand’s oldest cities and home of the world’s tallest Buddhist monument, the Phra Pathom Chedi. Looming dramatically over the entire city, the 127-metre orange-glazed spire glittered in the early morning sun as we scrambled off the train. The time allotted for the stop was just 30 minutes, so we only had time to reach the base of the monument, snap a few pictures and grab some of Nakhon Pathom’s famous khao laam – sticky rice and coconut steamed in a segment of bamboo – before rushing back to the waiting train. Nakhon Pathom and its colossal chedi deserve more time, but this visit was enough to whet our appetite and ensure that we would return for a more extensive visit.

Getting there Operated only on weekends and holidays, the rail trip to the historic Bridge on the River Kwai, Kanchanaburi, is entertaining and provides sobering lessons in some of the darker history of World War II.

The train leaves Bangkok’s Hualamphong Station at 6.30am, returns around 8.00pm and costs only 200 baht air-con and 100 baht for a car with open windows and a fan. Although air-con is more comfortable, viewing and photography is easier in the cars with open windows. There are guides on the train offering commentary in Thai, but they often stopped at our seat to explain things in English. Once off the train, people fend for themselves, but this didn’t present any problem as we simply followed the crowd to the various sights. It is a good idea, however, to bring your favourite guidebook along to help fill in details.
Don’t make our mistake of not having breakfast before arriving at the station. Hualamphong’s food vendors don’t open for business until after the train departs! Also be sure to purchase your ticket a couple of days in advance as seats often sell out before departure.

After leaving the bridge and Kanchanaburi town, the railway moves into the mountains and is cut into the side of limestone cliffs overlooking the Mae Nam Khwae Noi. The narrow roadbed was made by blasting and hammers and chisels wielded by prisoners and conscripts. The toll in human lives making this section of the railway was incredible, but today this is often forgotten as people concentrate on the remarkable scenery. The best views are found in the cars with fans and open windows. Passengers in the air-con cars are invited to move into the fan cars for a better view.

Death Railway Bridge For those expecting a wooden bridge like the one in the famous movie Bridge on the River Kwai, the present bridge spanning the Mae Nam Khwae Yai is quite different. The first bridge - completed in February, 1943 - really was constructed of wood, but was replaced by a second bridge made of steel shipped in from Java by the Imperial Japanese Army a couple of months later. In 1945, after 20 months of use, the bridge was destroyed by Allied bombs, but rebuilt after the war using much of the steel from the original structure. Today, to maintain historical accuracy, the bridge is most often referred to as the ‘Death Railway Bridge’. The tourist train stopped at the station adjacent to the bridge andwhere we were able to walk out onto the famous structure. Although there was a festive air and loads of group pictures taken with the bridge in the background, for many it was a time for serious reflection. An estimated 90,000 to 100,000 conscripted labourers from Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia and Indonesia and 16,000 Allied Prisoners of War (POWs) died constructing the bridge and the 415 km ‘Death Railway’, a tragic reality commemorated by the current bridge.

Nam Tok Sai Yok Noi Stomachs screeching for food, we arrived at the end of the railway shortly before noon. Nam Tok Sai Yok Noi is a charming little place with a cascading waterfall and a pool at the base of the falls. If you have a bathing suit or a change of clothes, jump in the water with the locals. It’s a great way to beat the heat! Thankfully, there were numerous places to eat around the little train station, with barbecued chicken being a speciality. We found the dining spots across the road, below the station, to have better quality eats at lower prices. Many Thais bring their own food and eat in the area below the falls. The waterfall is in a national park and there are numerous wellmarked trails leading away from the falls, taking hikers to additional falls, limestone caves, the remains of a Death Railway bridge and streams fed by springs that bubble up out of the ground. Remember to leave yourself time to return to the train as it departs at 3.00pm
Stunningly Beautiful Beachfront Luxury Residences at Rawai Beach. The ultimate waterfront lifestyle awaits here! Luxx Villas at Rawai Beach are low density, luxury five-storey, fivebedroom villas each measuring 600sqm, just 130m walk from the sea on Phuket’s scenic east coast.
Allied War Cemeteries Our last stop, on the way back to Bangkok, was at Kanchanaburi town to visit the Kanchanaburi Allied War Cemetery. There were pick-up truck taxis at the station to take us to the cemetery for 10 baht, but they really weren’t necessary as the cemetery was only a short walk away. The well tended cemetery is the final resting place for hundreds of Australian, Dutch, French and British soldiers who died building the Death Railway. The seemingly endless rows of graves are topped with plaques containing the names, nationality, age, military insignia and a short epitaph for the soldier interned below. Among other things, virtually everyone who visits the cemetery expresses shock at the youth of the men who lost their lives. Most were in their early twenties.
Each Villa has sea views from the second to the fifth floor, passenger lift, and rooftop swim spa with sun terrace and BBQ area. Designed by an Australian developer now living in Phuket, with more than 10 years of experience to the highest specifications and European standards. Rawai Beach Luxx Villas, Phuket represents a very attractive investment opportunity, just five minutes from Rawai, next to The Eva and Aqua Residences, with a private international primary school 50m away. A luxurious home and lifestyle opportunity, with very limited availability, in one of the most beautiful and sought-after locations in Phuket.
EACH FIVE-STOREY FAMILY RESIDENCE FEATURES • Luxury kitchen, dining and entertainment areas with spectacular sea views • Master bedroom on level three • Five bedrooms • 12m balconies • Incredible sea views • Rooftop spa swimming pool, deck and BBQ areas • Easy 130m walk to the beach • Security and CCTV • Key card system (optional) • Intercom (optional) • Maid’s accommodation • Passenger lift from level one to four
Priced at 39.9 million baht with roof pool and lift (or without these at 36.9 million baht)
During the journey back to Bangkok, the train stopped at Bang Sue Junction before continuing on to Hualamphong Station. This is a convenient stop for many as Bang Sue is located at the terminus of the MRT subway line. The exact itinerary of this trip varies with the seasons and what happens to be open, but it always includes Nakhon Pathom, the Death Railway Bridge and a visit to the Allied War Cemeteries. If you are looking for an interesting and informative escape from Bangkok, this is an excellent way to spend a day away from the city.

LEGAL MATTERS.LEGAL ENCOUNTERS IN PHUKET – PART 1
LEGAL MATTERS.LEGAL ENCOUNTERS IN PHUKET – PART 1
PRACTICAL TIPS for dealing with ‘legal encounters’ in Phuket – Part 1
That said, foreigners are known for ‘getting angry’ or as many Thais describe ‘jai rohn’ (literally translated as ‘hot heart’). When this happens, it will most likely involve a miscommunication, confusion, or a non-acceptance of the result of a certain situation by the foreigner.
N
ot many people want to read about the laws before they engage in the pleasures of Phuket, be it as a tourist or as a part- or full-time resident. However, the same pleasure seekers can often be surprised, if not shocked, to discover that the laws of the Kingdom of Thailand aren’t ‘the same as back home’ and aren’t based on ‘western logic’ but were written, at the time of discussion and enactment, on the basis of what was good for Thailand, and for Thai people.
However, the reality is that it is actually a visitor’s obligation to understand and comply with the laws of the land and accept responsibility for mistakes in understanding. There are, of course, some practical tips for common issues that arise in Phuket that can assist with ‘brushes’ with the law as set out in this Part 1 of this 2-part article:
1. Road traffic accidents You will see regularly in the English language newspapers reports of road traffic accidents. If you ever pick up a Thai language printed newspaper or check online, you may also see such reports together with quite graphically shocking images, albeit with certain parts pixelated as a small mercy to the viewer. You might think graphic images of the results of accidents would result in the reduction of them, but unfortunately that is not the case. In Thailand, when a road traffic accident occurs and you are involved, you must remember the following: (i) Call the insurance company immediately. (ii) If you get out of your vehicle to inspect damage, then make sure you get back in the vehicle whilst you await the insurance company representative. (iii) Don’t accept that you will be ‘told’ by the insurance company, or any other party, to simply ‘accept blame’ for the accident because it will be ‘easier’. However, do not become heated or angry when not accepting blame if an accident wasn’t your fault. (iv) Keep a record of explanations, visibly write down what people are telling you, so they become conscious that there is a record. (v) If you hire a car or buy a car, invest a few thousand Thai baht in a webcam, which has both front and back camera coverage. These are easy to install and can

This can result in a tantrum which may include insults. There are very serious penalties for insulting a government officer; there are very serious penalties for insulting somebody’s heritage or parentage; there are very serious penalties for writing negative comments on a forum in an insulting manner or for posting videos on YouTube, causing damage to Thailand. If you wish to stay in Thailand, and not become embroiled in defamation cases in the courts or worse than that, cases relating to the ‘Computer Crime Act’, then you are strongly recommended to curb your temper and withhold any insults.

cut through any lies on who did what in an instant. It can also record any violent behaviour, which has been known to involve machetes, knives or guns. (vi) Don’t sign a witness statement in Thai at the police station, or even in English, until you have consulted a lawyer. You may be pressured to do things quickly as a police station is busy and won’t want to spend too much time on a road traffic incident. However, you will not be able to change what you have said if you have sworn it was true and later realise it wasn’t correct.
Please note that defamation laws in Thailand work in a very different way to those in many other countries. You must accept the laws of the land you are in as they are, as opposed to the laws you wish them to be. If you encounter any difficult situations, keep smiling and work out how to get out of the situation with minimum damage, for all participants. Visit our 3,000 sqm. showroom
2. Presentation of your identification documents in different circumstances Unfortunately, by law, foreigners in Thailand are required to carry at all times their original passports, or equivalent ID, which is unlikely to be anything other than the passport. To Patong
Remember that Thai nationals also have to carry their ID, so this law doesn’t ‘target’ foreigners. In practice the authorities will often accept Thai driving licenses or national ID cards as acceptable, provided they aren’t checking visas, or provided you aren’t suspected of committing a crime.
To Patong
King Power
Laws aren’t usually written in any country by any government with the wellbeing of foreigners elevated above that of the indigenous population. It is often said, on those notoriously analysis-poor web forum comment sections, that ‘Thailand doesn’t have laws which favour or protect foreigners’.
These people find a way to display their feet up in the air, against the back of chairs or on airport seating; they push to the front of queues, wear inappropriate dress at temples, on motorbikes or in public places and will not even know what a ‘Wai’ is, or care. Fortunately, this is still a reflection of a minority of people.

Clearly this isn’t practical if you are scuba diving, paragliding, kite surfing or conducting similar activities. Therefore, you should (a) take a photo of your passport photo page and visa page and store the photo on your phone, (b) keep a colour copy of both pages in your bag and (c) keep the original secure, preferably in a safe.
3. Becoming embroiled in insults / getting angry in person or in writing Many tour guides, written in English, refer to ‘Dos’ and ‘Don’ts’ in Thailand. The problem is, the people most likely to commit faux pas and cultural gaffes are the type of people who wouldn’t bother to check out cultural rules first.

THE FOURTH DIMENSION OF FURNITURE ADVERTORIAL
Ambiance counts Light is a fundamental part of life and it noticeably affects our well-being; for example bright, cool-white morning light has a very different effect compared to the warm glow of candles or soft light bulbs. When dealing with inside lighting, one tries to mimic daylight in an effort to highlight the room’s assets. Correct lighting complementing furniture and furnishings blends harmoniously with the atmosphere of any room in your house, adding another layer to the design – creating a fourth dimension. If used skillfully through correct lighting, subtle nuances are created, enhancing your home’s ambiance while different areas are separated or accentuated to create a perfectly composed holistic effect.
Due to their low heat, small fixture size, and the long service life, LED lights are ideally suited for this purpose in any colour you choose, resulting in a realistic and warm effect. With the Loox LED system any area in your house or office can be illuminated for functional and decorative purposes and it’s surprisingly simple. Loox light ideas are flexible, easy and reliable to implement. With the Loox LED system it’s simple to develop and plan flexible light ideas and designs plus it complements a wide selection of different components ranging from light fixtures to switches. The easy to use plug-in system with its clearly marked colour coding connects all the elements with a compact driver. Larger systems with multiple or different drivers can also be installed. All components are of certified quality and provide long-term reliability and peace of mind.
Ya Nui Beach seen from Windmill View point
Windmill View point As the name suggests, this hilltop boasts a modern windmill – the only one on the island. It can be found on the south of Phuket between Nai Harn and Promthep. This isolated spot offers superb views of the tiny Ya Nui Beach and the main Nai Harn Beach. There are always yachts anchored off both beaches and in December the anchorages really come alive as the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta gets under way.

Phuket Bird Park
Parasailing & Paragliding
Phuket Bird Park has just opened on Chaofa West Road not far from Sukho Spa. It boasts more than 100 bird species – macaws, hornbills, eagles and owls from Asia, Africa and South America on 22 acres of land. There’s a garden with a natural waterfall, thus keeping them close to their natural habitats. Open daily from 9am to 6pm. Enjoy bird shows three times a day at 10:30, 1:30 and 3:30pm. You will be impressed how well a flamedcoloured parrot named ‘Andaman’ will help you feed the birds. Entrance for children 300 baht, adults pay 500 baht. 102 G3
Phuket Bird Park
Ever wish you could fly like a bird, soaring and diving effortlessly with the wind in your face, and experience views of this beautiful island from a new and exciting perspective? Phuket now offers you the chance to do exactly this. It’s called parasailing. The parasail is a specially designed parachute which you wear, and which is then towed behind a speedboat; suddenly you are airborne and looking down on mere mortals. There are several operators on beaches and prices start at 2,000 baht.
The Big Buddha Rising from the hills of Chalong, forming a gleaming presence that can be seen from clear across Phuket’s south, sits the Big Buddha. A decade ago, the huge statue was commissioned for a temple in Kata, but at some point someone looked up to the top of the verdant hill rising behind the temple and thought, “Why not?” Thus, an ambitious plan was born.
Thalang National Museum Built more than 20 years ago, it depicts scenes of times past with life-sized mannequins, the main tableau featuring the legendary Phuket Heroines, Lady Chan and Lady Mook, whose clever battle tactics saved the island from the invading Burmese forces in 1785. Another scene shows King Rama I honouring the sisters for their bravery and bestowing them with the titles Thao Thepkrassatri and Thao Srisunthorn.
On the Big Buddha hilltop there are encouraging signs to be found. In the large meditation hall on one afternoon, a small group of Thais and foreign tourists can be seen receiving blessings from two monks, a peaceful scene familiar to anyone living in Thailand, but for visitors it reveals the contemplative, tender side of Thai culture not always evident in the brash tourist areas.

Phuket’s Floating Market:
Floating Market shape up in this respect? Pretty good – and getting better every day.
A vibrant mix of traditional and modern, you can buy a bowl of noodles from a ‘floating’ vendor or a thousand varieties of Thai snacks, soft drinks, great coffee or ice cream from one of the waterside shops.
There really is something for everyone here: Beachwear and accessories, hats and shoes galore, inflatable toys for the kids, traditional Thai outfits (they make great gifts for the folks back home), herbal remedies, cosmetics, fresh and dried fruits and more... and more... PLUS every kind of snack and fast food you could want AND one or two comfortable places to grab a cold beer, gin and tonic or whatever you fancy while you rest your feet.
For more serious hunger pangs, there’s a typical food court, a pizza restaurant, curries from Patthalung and more. A good feed is a critical part of any shopping trip – and the floating market does not disappoint. What next? You could take a boat trip around the market, drop into the ‘superhero’ café-bar – or one of the other spots where the man of the house can relax while the lady browses... or why not start shopping now?
Finally, if time allows, why not get a foot massage, a Thai massage or dangle your feet in a fish spa.
You absolutely MUST visit @beach for the latest hats, bags, fancy flip-flops, beachwear and more. Don’t miss out! This is arguably the best-stocked shop in the whole market! And the prices are, of course, unbelievably attractive. But there’s lot more than shopping. Take a stroll around the boardwalk, chat with the vendors, see how relaxing life on the water could be in days gone by.
