RLYC Commodore YM Tunku Dato’ Yaacob presented the trophies to the winners of the Prime Minister’s Challenge, LADA-IRC Challenge Trophy, the RLIR IRC2 Challenge Cup, the Langkawi Sports Class, the Malaysia Multihull Challenge, RLYC Commodore’s Challenge and the Tunku Abdullah Sportsmanship Award. RLIR 2016 is grateful for the continued support of the Tourism Malaysia and Ministry of Youth and Sports Malaysia as well as its commercial sponsors and supporters. A big ‘thank you’ to our international and regional media partners; IMAGE asia, SEA Yachting, Sail-World Asia, Yacht Style, HOMME, TRAXXfm Radio & RTM and Spectrum Outdoor.
The Royal Langkawi International Regatta (RLIR) 2016, held from 11 to 16 January 2016, turned out to be another exceptionally exciting and successful regatta with 37 entries from local and international yachts.
The Royal Langkawi International Regatta (RLIR) 2016 is organised by the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club (RLYC) and sanctioned by the ISAF and Malaysian Sailing Association (MSA), and supported by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Malaysia. The RLIR is part of the Asian Yachting Circuit.
Alive’s first time at the RLIR was rewarded with the Prime Minister’s Challenge Trophy for the Racing Class, with Millenium Racing coming in second and Oi!, last year’s winner, in third place. The young all-Malaysian crew of Team Ulumulu managed to slip into fourth, ahead of Jelik and Trader.
RLYC and RLIR 2016 organisers would like to take this opportunity to thank all participants, partners and sponsors, media and government agencies for their support that contributed to a successful regatta.
Fujin, skippered by Mick Tilden, stole the show to take the LADAIRC Challenge Trophy over Uranus, Emagine, Megazio and Insanity in the IRC 1 Class.
Following on this success, we look forward to continuing these ongoing relationships for another year to organise the 15th regatta which will be held from 9 to 14 January 2017. Until then, fair winds to all for another regatta filled with excitement and challenges both on and off the water.
This year, the IRC-2 yachts competed for their own trophy – the RLIR IRC-2 Challenge Trophy – which was claimed by Mata Hari. RLIR regular Phoenix had to settle for second place ahead of newbie Foreign Affair. Singapore Management University (SMU), skippered by Koh Ling Ying took the Langkawi Sports Trophy. The new multihull in the lineup, WOW skippered by David Liddell won the Malaysia Multihull Challenge Cup while Sophia skippered by Phil Auger and Astrid Graham won the RLYC Commodore’s Cup.

BOATING.CAPE PANWA HOTEL PHUKET RACEWEEK
ADVERTORIAL
Firefly racing at its best as Mamba bears down on Moto Inzi.
The local international regatta Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek Local support is at the heart of Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek and it always has been. Born in Phuket, launched and operated by people in Phuket and with ongoing support from the Phuket Yacht Club, Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek has tirelessly worked with the local community and has never lost sight of the importance of keeping the regatta true to its roots. Since the beginning the regatta has always had strong support from local businesses who understand that the regatta is part of the island community. “Whilst we are seeing more and more international participants each year, we are also working closely with the local business and sailing community to ensure the regatta retains its essence. The formula laid down on day one, and that has been adhered to ever since, is still at the core of the event today and we are very proud that the regatta remains an important part of Phuket,” said Mr. Byron Jones, Managing Director of organisers Media Business Services Co. Ltd. (MBS). Founder of Phuket Raceweek, IMAGE asia continues to support the regatta through their print and online media. Publisher of a series of targeted tourist guides and maps, as well as the island’s leading glossy, WINDOW on Phuket, word of the regatta is carried far and wide in several languages. Local support, however, is not just in the form of sponsorship. Many of the local sailors and fleet have been regular competitors and no more so is this evident than in the local multihull fleet.
Firefly favourite Neil Ayre travels from China to compete at Phuket Raceweek.
As well as encouraging a strong showing from the local sailing community, many other areas of support are needed. One area often overlooked from outside is the need for boats and onwater support. Raceweek organisers confirm Illuzion will return this year and will again be providing the indispensable start boat from which the Race Management team will operate the races. Elsewhere will be a dedicated media boat, essential to get the shots and stories needed to spread the word of racing and sponsors, and this again will be provided by Absolute World Group. Other returning sponsors include Sailescapes, Phuket and Krabi Boat Lagoon, Electrical Marine – who provide the on-water race management communications – Quantum Sails and ISS, who are again handling the onshore security, while joining the regatta as a sponsor for the first time this year are Asia Catamarans. “We cannot run the regatta without support from many corners. Participants are essential to a successful regatta but equally important are sponsors, big and small, and bringing all of these different elements together is what makes Raceweek so special,” added Mr. Jones. Not a Cloud in the Sky
Still on the ‘not-just-boats’ theme, the popular Phuket Raceweek Regatta was making itself visible in the TYS pavilion. “It’s proved very good for us to be here at TYS,” said organiser Byron Jones. “ We have been able to remind our regulars of the dates of the 2016 event (20-24 July), and a lot of new faces have enquired about entry. It’s been a very positive experience for us, and we look forward to a bumper edition of Phuket’s premier summer sailing regatta.” www.phuketraceweek.com
The last day of the Thailand Yacht Show (TYS) started with brilliant blue skies and stayed that way. If there is too much of a good thing this might be it! Hot tropical sunshine was the order of the day but did nothing to deter a steady flow of visitors to an event that promises to become the number one marine event in Thailand, and possibly the whole region. After wowing the gallery with amazing aerobatics for the last three days, the FlyBoard demo team of Daniel Kaufman and World Champion Suksan Tongthai bowed out with another extraordinary performance. For those who fancied trying to keep their balance on top of a super-powerful pair of water jets there were free trial sessions – and for those that didn’t quite manage it, there was a swim… but nobody seemed to mind.
Capt Jean-Pierre Delstanches has been at the helm of the properly classic superyacht Nanou, a Benetti 30m, for 10 years now – almost since the day she was launched. Nanou is a perfect example of a boat that has been meticulously cared for; after cruising for an astonishing 46,000nm, she looks as if she came out of the yard just yesterday. Nanou has been in Asian waters for just over a year and is an active charter vessel managed by Burgess.

All good things come to an end, however. The exhibitors stands and tents were being packed away just as M/Y Ocean Emerald, the spectacularly futuristic Norman Foster-designed 41m Rodriguez, hosted the closing party on the dock. As the visitors left the pontoons, TYS Managing Director Andy Treadwell commented on four days of what has been a hugely successful inaugural event. “I think we got it about as right as we could in the circumstances,” he said, “but I have some really good ideas for improvement next time round…”
Still, there’s a lot more than just boats at a good yacht show. The ancillary services and facilities have their place, too. Increased government support for boating in Thailand will inevitably lead to greater demand for marinas, and the forthcoming development at Port Takola near Krabi, is exhibiting at the TYS. Five years in the planning, phase 1 of Port Takola will be operational at the end of May 2016, and – unlike many marina developments in Asia – it’ll be a case of ‘marina first, property later’. With pontoon systems by Marinetek, haul out and repair/engineering facilities, and fuelling facilities and a touch-and-go charter dock for anything up to 50m superyachts, this is definitely a fully featured development. Add in the proximity to Krabi International Airport, and it has all the hallmarks of a well-thought-out facility. www.porttakola.com

Grilled Australian lamb chops BY ORIENTAL SPOON Ingredients 31/4-31/2-inch range, Australian lamb chops | 200g cooked Puy lentils | 1tbsp of rosemary | 2 large cloves grilled garlic, crushed | 4tbsp extra-virgin olive oil | salt & pepper | grilled zucchini | grilled cherry tomatoes Method: In a small bowl, mix the rosemary, salt, pepper, grilled garlic and two tablespoons of olive oil together. Coat the lamb chops with the mixture, massaging it into the meat with your fingers. If you are working with double rib chops, cover and let stand at room temperature for 30 to 45 minutes. Heat the remaining two tablespoons of olive oil in an oven-proof sauté pan over high heat. When the oil is shimmering hot, sear the lamb chops on all sides, about 2-3 minutes per side. At this point, if you want your lamb chops rare, they are likely cooked enough. Remove them from the pan cover them with foil and let sit for 5-10 minutes before serving. If you would like your chops more cooked, you can put them in a 400°F oven for 3-5 minutes, or keep them in the hot pan, remove from heat, and cover the pan for a few minutes. Then remove from the pan to a plate, cover with foil and let rest 5-10 minutes before serving. Place the lamb chop on the Puy lentils and decorate with rosemary, grilled tomatoes and zucchini. Now it’s ready to serve.

The east and west coast beaches of the island each provide their own unique slice of beach heaven.
Weddings in Phuket why not choose Phuket for your wedding destination? Everyone who’s done it knows it; there are so many meticulous details that go into planning a wedding. A date must be set, the venue chosen, dresses and formal wear acquired, the elaborate minutiae of flowers, linens, dinnerware and cutlery, music and a photographer must be selected, and cakes, wines and champagnes to be agreed upon to maximize the celebrations on the big day. Photo courtesy of Luxury Events Phuket
For most, a tropical wedding on a sun-kissed island is the type of bonding that dreams are made of. Saying “I do” to the backdrop of a breathtaking sunset represents the perfect storybook wedding fantasy but a tropical wedding doesn’t have to be only a dream… In Phuket, there’s a wide variety of venues, event and wedding planners, as well as suppliers, that go above and beyond their duty to make many couples’ tropical wedding dreams come true.

Why choose Phuket as your wedding destination? There are so many answers to that question, beginning with the island itself: Simply put, Phuket’s gorgeous. The natural beauty of the island hosts some of the very best scenery that Southeast Asia
windowonphuket.com
window.phuket
has to offer, including lush, green tropical foliage and an amazing assortment of colourful tropical flowers, such as rare species of orchids and sweet-smelling frangipani. Phuket’s beaches are world-renowned for their rugged beauty, and rightfully so. The east and west coast beaches of the island each provide their own unique slice of beach heaven. Some beaches are backed by lovely casuarina trees and native palm trees, while others roll on for as far as the eye can see. The island’s beaches make for a picture-perfect postcard backdrop to your wedding day.

Another reason to choose Phuket as your wedding destination would have to be the wide variety of venues to choose from. If a beach wedding is not what you are looking for, there are many luxurious five-star resorts around the island that offer wedding services and packages. Some of the resorts offer chapel-style weddings, while others turn their special event venues into wedding locations. The highly-skilled and experienced event management teams in Phuket’s resorts will rise to even the most challenging of requests, ensuring that every tiny detail of your wedding is exactly what you wished for.

Another reason to choose Phuket as your wedding destination would definitely have to be because of the wide variety of venues to choose from on the island. Most five-star resorts also offer all-inclusive wedding and honeymoon packages, making Phuket an affordable choice for a tropical destination wedding not only for the bride and groom, but also for friends and family members who wish to come and help celebrate the special day. One more factor in making Phuket an affordable tropical destination wedding choice is the wide availability of international flights to and from the island. If you’re hoping to have a more minimalistic beach wedding, Phuket is also a wise choice. There are several one-stop wedding planners here that will

help you manage your big day. They are well versed in planning tropical destination weddings and can offer oodles of good advice as well as practical consultations regarding your wedding. As these wedding planners are well connected throughout the island, they can arrange absolutely everything you need, including catering, reception setup, transportation, a DJ or live musical entertainment, recommendations for a place to stay and – in the most extreme cases – even a dress for the bride and appropriate attire for the groom and wedding party.

Other available services include budget management, hair and makeup, photographers or videographers as well as flower arrangements, specific ceremony requests and vows. Wedding planners can also source the perfect cake from some of the best pastry chefs on the island and they can help you realise all of your unique and challenging wedding choices and ideas that make sure your tropical wedding is as near perfection as can be. Ceremony enhancements are another great reason to choose Phuket. Many couples who come to to tie the knot choose traditional Thai ceremony enhancements such as Buddhist blessings or the traditional water ceremony, which in Thai weddings is the most important part of the wedding, as this is when the couple actually becomes husband and wife. Many western couples incorporate these traditional ceremony enhancements into their wedding as they’re a unique feature, characteristic of Phuket. These enhancements add something extra special to your wedding – unique memories to be remembered for years to come. It’s little touches like these that help ensure your wedding goes above and beyond your expectations. So yes, Phuket’s a perfect choice for a tropical destination wedding. The island is lush, the venues and beaches unique, and the services on offer are some of the most professional and affordable in the world. Why would you not choose Phuket as your wedding destination? That’s the real question!

r Rushapol Sdawat’s hands are known for creating and mending. As the facial and reconstructive specialist at the Phuket Plastic Surgery Institute (PPSI) in Phuket International Hospital, he spends much of his days perfecting contours and cranial structures to his clients’ specifications. But it’s in his spare time that Dr Rushapol gets to use his hands for a passion that moves the rhythm of his heart – guitar-making. “I know how to change the shape of a face. Now I’ve learned how carpenters work, it’s the same. To change the shape, to grind it out, to reassemble, it’s the same as the human skull. I understand what they’re doing, especially when making guitars,” he says. At 46 years old, Dr Rushapol is an avid guitar collector with over 140 examples stored in a dedicated room in his house in Sam Kong. As a luthier – a guitar-maker and designer – he has created over a dozen acoustic prototypes though he’s recently moved on to designing environmentally-friendly carbon fibre guitars. Dr Rushapol keeps busy when he finishes his surgical duties at the hospital. He spends time on the badminton court, plays the guitar, studies astrology regularly, and has added Aikido training to his martial arts repertoire. As the top neuro-surgery student at Siriraj Medical School in Mahidol University, he was offered a faculty position upon graduating. Instead of choosing to become a brain surgeon and professor, he decided to go into general surgery specialising in the abdomen in order to save lives. But soon after, he made the change to go into plastic surgery.
The main purpose of surgery is to save life, to save function and to save the appearance. Plastic surgery definitely improves appearance; it also improves function and, in the case of burn victims, plastic surgery can save lives. “The main purpose of surgery is to save life, to save function and to save the appearance. Plastic surgery definitely improves appearance; it also improves function and, in the case of burn victims, plastic surgery can save lives,” he says. After eight years of working on reconstructive surgery such as breast enhancements, organ repairs, severe burns, nose reconstruction and more at Sawanpracharak Hospital in Nakhon Sawan, personally handling over 10,000 cases, he was offered an opportunity in 2008 to move to Phuket. Intrigued by the idea of working on cosmetics, the only realm within plastic surgery to which he had yet to dedicate himself fully, Dr Rushapol jumped at the chance.

“Dr Sanguan Kunaporn (PPSI) called me in 2008 because they wanted to create a strong team of specialists for this centre. I made up my mind to move here in one minute!” he explains. Now, as a specialist focusing solely on the face and cranium, he spends days treating many clients, mostly patients who fly in from Australia and the west. “This is the best place to live in Thailand. It has something for everybody and is very beautiful. When you first come you always want to go to the beach, but then if you don’t like that anymore, there’s always something else to do,” he says. “I’m lucky to have a place here.”
A devout Catholic, Saint Joseph’s Church in Cherngtalay is where you’ll find him on Sundays. “Certain people live here, people who can help me and I can help them. Smart people live here who are also good people...” As a second-generation Chinese-Thai, Dr Rushapol grew up with a strong focus on education, although he loved drawing and practicing Tai Chi in Lumpinee Park with family members. Phuket allows him to continue his interests within the wide range of people who live on the island, while also perfecting his skills as one of Thailand’s foremost facial specialists. A devout Catholic, Saint Joseph’s Church in Cherngtalay is where you’ll find him on Sundays. “Certain people live here, people who can help me and I can help them. Smart people live here, who are also good people... the living cost here is high for Thailand, but it’s still much cheaper than many places in the world, like New York for example,” he says. For Dr Rushapol, the fact that patients seek him out is what helps get him up in the morning. “Phuket allows me to express my ability in cosmetic surgery. Before Phuket, every choice was forcing me to do reconstructive work, fixing organs with other parts of the body. Surgery is why I moved here, it allows me to do what I’ve never done before in my life... the social part of surgery which is cosmetic,” he says. Still, the main reason he got into surgery in the first place has always remained with him. “Life comes before function, function comes before appearance. This is still is my guiding principle.”

TRAVEL.KOH YAO YAI
TRAVEL.KOH YAO YAI
Koh Yao Yai, or ‘Big Long Island’, is nestled in the middle of stunning Phang Nga Bay. Surrounded by epic limestone crags, it epitomizes every fantasy of a tropical island paradise. Koh Yao Yai is a sleepy island rich in towering palm trees and lush vegetation. The island’s beaches are ample, covered in soft white sand, and its hidden turquoise bays often deserted. Koh Yao Yai’s coast is hugged by dense mangroves rich in regional wildlife, and sunsets viewed from the island are truly spectacular. Miraculously, Koh Yao Yai has managed to avoid becoming another overcrowded, hectic beach resort as tourism development on this 30km-long island lags behind its frenetic island neighbour to the west.
A day on the island genuinely feels like a throwback to a simpler time, light years away from rapid development, crowded roads and technological advances.
Koh Yao Yai street scenes include plenty of palm trees, friendly locals in the market and children playing in the sea.
Koh Yao Yai’s shallow waters are calm and safe for swimming.
Koh Yao Yai feels and looks old in a very charming way. A day on the island genuinely feels like a throwback to a simpler time, light years away from rapid development, crowded roads and technological advances. The local inhabitants of Koh Yao Yai are proud of the island’s rustic charm, and have all of the best intentions of keeping the island’s current appeal intact.
Life in Koh Yao Yai putters along at a leisurely pace and this laid-back vibe provides the perfect atmosphere for exploring all the island has to offer. The coast roads are long and winding and although not fantastically well maintained, they and the off-the-beaten-path dirt tracks, are manageable. Crossing the island by motorbike affords breathtaking sea views, the chance to wander past rice paddies and green fields and the opportunity to appreciate the authentic ‘shabby chic’ of the wooden stilt and teakwood houses as well as the intricate architectural details of the island’s various mosques.

The local community is predominantly Muslim, and much of the island’s livelihood relies on the fishing industry, farming and rubber tree plantations.

The local people are very open to engaging in conversation with tourists, even if their English is not fluent. There’s a smile, a nod or a wave waiting on every corner of Koh Yao Yai. Watching the locals interact with each other is like observing a big family at a long overdue reunion. Everyone knows each other, jokes are cracked, hugs are shared and there’s a distinct feeling that each community member on Koh Yao Yai looks out for the others.

The local people are very open to engaging in conversation with tourists even if their English is not fluent. There’s a smile, a nod or a wave waiting on every corner of Koh Yao Yai.
Whilst exploring Koh Yao Yai, it’s important to respect the local inhabitants’ traditional way of life. The locals are conservative Thai Muslims. It’s not acceptable to go shirtless or wear a bikini unless you’re on the beach. There’s nothing in the way of nightlife and certainly no party scene on Koh Yao Yai. Alcohol, outside of the sparse scattering of hotels and bungalows, is not readily available as most shops and restaurants don’t sell or serve it. Dogs are not welcome, and you’ll need to leave your pork yearning behind for the duration of your stay on the island. Although there is a scattering of bungalows and homestays on the island, accommodation on Koh Yao Yai tends to be mid-range to luxury. Koh Yao Yai attracts a more mindful type of solo traveller, couples on romantic getaways, and families looking for a quiet beach holiday. It’s possible to reserve bungalows and homestays over the phone but it’s
also recommended to have a Thai friend to help in booking clarification. If arranged beforehand, local bungalow and homestay owners are happy to meet guests at the pier and provide transportation back to the selected accommodation. The beaches of Koh Yao Yai are worth dipping into. Most are covered in white sand and are often deserted. The shallow bays with turquoise waters are idyllic, as well as calm and safe for swimming. However, it’s important to pay attention to the tides as most of these narrow beaches turn to mud flats at low tide. There is one exception on Koh Yao Yai and that’s the beach known as Loh Paret on the west coast. Here, it’s possible to swim all day without the worry of watching the tides or having to get out of the water before it turns to mud flats. Loh Paret is also the best place to experience Koh Yao Yai’s spectacular sunset views.
Life on the island putters along at a slower pace; a day on Koh Yao Yai feels like stepping back in time.
Aside from exploring the island’s coastline and beaches by motorbike, there are a variety of other activities available around the island. Local tour operators are quick to offer mangrove and local karst island kayaking trips. Fishing and diving excursions are also available, and snorkelling trips are offered at nearby islands. ATV off-roading is also available on Koh Yao Yai, and for those interested in sustainability, agricultural tours are a unique way to experience the island’s rubber plantations and abundant coconut groves.
GETTING THERE Koh Yao Yai is only accessible by boat. Several ferries from Phuket, Phang Nga and Krabi run throughout the day and resorts and tour operators are able to organise speedboat and long-tail boat transfers. Car and passenger ferries leave from Chianvanich pier on the outskirts of Phuket Town to Loh Jark pier on Koh Yao Yai’s southwest coast. The ferry to Phuket’s Laem Hin departs from Koh Yao Yai’s Laem Yai pier, near Loh Paret Beach. Bang Rong Pier on Phuket’s east coast is the launching point for ferries to Klong Hia pier in the north of Koh Yao Yai. The white sand beaches of Koh Yao Yai, often deserted, are worth dipping into.

Another interesting and recommended activity is stopping by one of the island’s local fresh markets. Here it’s possible to find delicious phad Thai wrapped in banana leaves, local Muslim curries, fresh fruit and sweet treats for a fraction of the price you will find anywhere else in Thailand. If a particular food item catches your eye, note that the local ladies and market vendors are eager to let you try before you buy. Speaking of food, the local Thai restaurants on Koh Yao Yai serve up authentic, fresh cuisine at extremely cheap prices. Seafood options, although more expensive, are still highly affordable. There are a few coffee shops around the island, as well as many street carts selling delicious fried chicken, sticky rice, juicy mangos and noodle soup. Western fare is readily available in the high-end resorts, and made to order in most bungalows and homestays if the ingredients are on hand. Known for its rustic charm and slower pace of life, Koh Yao Yai is quite possibly the most unspoiled island in the Phuket and Krabi region. Accessible only by boat, the island’s pristine appearance and traditional way of life are appealing to those looking to experience the Thailand of yesteryear.

Songkhla night market offers a wide selection of snacks and drinks.
Most people associate southern Thailand with the idyllic beaches of Phuket, Krabi and Koh Samui but few people know that just a couple of hundred miles south of the popular tourist destinations empty beaches, authentic night markets, and quaint fishing towns await.
Thailand
Southern Thailand is more than Phuket, Krabi and Koh Samui. Travel to Hat Yai, Trang and Songkhla for some authentic culture, fiery dishes and southern hospitality.
Trang’s dim sum restaurants are numerous and delicious.

A good place to start your journey is in Trang, some 100km south of Krabi. Trang is perhaps best known as a transit hub on the way to nearby islands which is a shame because the town itself actually offers plenty of culture, charming coffee shops and, a short ride away, long stretches of empty beaches. A large portion of Trang’s population is made up of the descendents of Chinese immigrants who came to Thailand in the 18th century and all around town you will see traces of this cultural legacy; a dim sum restaurant here, a traditional Chinese medicine

shop there. Traditional Chinese coffee shops, or raan kopi as they are known locally, are great places to soak in the local culture and Yu Chiang is an especially atmospheric example. The place is owned by a family of Chinese descent and locals sit around marble-topped tables with hot cups of tea or kafae boran, strongly roasted robusta coffee which is sweetened with condensed milk. West of Trang town you’ll find Pak Meng Beach, which is a long stretch of practically untouched strand. Unlike many of the beaches in popular tourist destinations like Phuket and Samui, Pak Meng beach is almost deserted. Bar a few shacks along the beach road selling freshly caught seafood and colourful sarongs, you are likely to have the whole place to yourself. Renting a tuk tuk from Trang to Pak Meng is easy and affordable.

Colourful shopfronts in Hat Yai

From Trang, head southeast to southern Thailand’s largest city, Hat Yai. Like Trang, Hat Yai most commonly finds itself on travellers’ itineraries as a transit to nearby locations but for those willing to spend a few days there, the town has excellent southern food and a great night market. Hat Yai is known for its fried chicken and a good place to try this regional speciality is Gai Tod Decha. Owned by a Muslim family, the restaurant masters the art of making crispy yet not dry chicken, which is served on khao mok, fragrant rice spiced with cardamom, turmeric, cloves, garlic and coriander seeds. The dish comes with a slightly sweet chilli sauce, sliced cucumber and a generous sprinkle of deep-fried shallots.
Just a short drive from Hat Yai is one of the most charming towns of southern Thailand, Songkhla. Initially a part of the Malay kingdom, Songkhla used to be a trading port where Indian, Persian and Arab merchants came to sell and buy goods and when Chinese immigrants arrived they cemented the city’s eclectic nature.

The area around the old port is especially atmospheric with houses full of patina, old Chinese teahouses and souvenir shops. The newer part of the city is concentrated along Chana Road, which every night around five o’clock transforms into one of the most bustling night markets in southern Thailand, with a heavy focus on food. Here you can find turmeric spiced fried fish, spicy khao yam, satays, tee tarik and homemade ice cream.

LEGAL MATTERS.WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW WHEN SEEKING TO BECOME A THAI NATIONAL
LEGAL MATTERS.WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW WHEN SEEKING TO BECOME A THAI NATIONAL
What you should know
Section 12 of the Nationality Act, B.E.2508 (1965) states that foreigners who apply for naturalization can file an application with the competent official according to the form and in the manner prescribed in the Ministerial Regulations. The granting or refusal of permission for naturalization as a Thai rests upon the discretion of the Minister. In case the Minister deems it appropriate to grant permission, he shall submit the matter to H.M. King for Royal
when seeking to become a Thai national.
Practically speaking, it is not that easy for foreigners to become a Thai national under this process, even though the process may appear straightforward...
F
oreigners do not have the right to vote, or become a candidate, or participate in Thailand’s politics according to the Constitution of the Kingdom of Thailand. Foreigners do not have the right to work in Thailand unless they follow the Alien Work Act. Foreigners do not have the right to do business in Thailand unless they follow the Alien Business Act. Foreigners do not have the right to own land in Thailand unless they invest their money the Kingdom (at least 40 million baht) and get approval from the Minister of Interior for such investment. Then such foreigners can own land only for residential purposes, but not more than one rai, according to the Land Code and the Ministerial Regulation. Foreigners do not have the right to own a Condominium in Thailand unless they follow the Condominium Act. Therefore, it is fair to say that the rights of foreigners are heavily restricted in Thailand.
The fee to apply for naturalization is 5,000 baht and to apply for naturalization for their child (one person) is 2,500 baht each time. The fee of a certificate of naturalization is 500 baht.
To avoid these limitations, foreigners may seek to become a Thai national and, if successful, they can benefit from the same rights as Thai citizens. The following are the ways in which a foreigner can become a Thai national:
Foreigners do not have the right to own land in Thailand unless they invest at least 40 million baht in the Kingdom and get approval from the Minister of Interior
Desmond Hughes
(1) Having become a legally recognised adult in accordance with Thai law as well as being a legal adult in their own country. (2) Having good behavior.
Naturalization is defined in Sections 10, 11 and 12 of the Nationality Act, B.E.2508 (1965). Section 10 is the general qualification while Sections 11 and 12, paragraph 2, define the exceptions. A foreigner who has qualifications according to Section 10 of the Nationality Act, B.E.2508 (1965), as per below, can apply for naturalization.
Kochakorn Suwannachuen
Without having to apply for naturalization, a foreign woman who marries a Thai man can file an application for acquiring Thai nationality with the competent official according to the form and in the manner prescribed in the Ministerial Regulations. The granting or refusal of permission for acquisition of Thai nationality shall lie with the discretion of the Minister according to the Section 9 of the Nationality Act, B.E.2508 (1965). Practically speaking, it is not that easy for foreigners to become a Thai national under this process, even though the process may appear straightforward from the above description. There are often delays in the processing time and there are many documents that may be requested in addition to the basic pack of first application documents. There is also an interview process which may be repeated several times.
Sanction. After the Royal Sanction, the applicant shall make an affirmation of loyalty to Thailand. After publication in the Government Gazette under Section 5, the competent official shall issue a certificate of naturalization to the foreigners as evidence. The Ministerial Regulations B.E. 2510 (1967) according the Section 10 and 12 of the Nationality Act, B.E.2508 (1965), says if a foreigner who applies for naturalization has a domicile in Bangkok Thailand, they shall file such application with a Public Security Police Commander. If a foreigner has a domicile in another province, he or she shall file such application with a Superintendent of such province.
(3) Having a regular occupation. (4) Having a domicile in the Thai Kingdom for a consecutive period of not less than five years prior to the date of filing the application for naturalization. (5) Having the ability to speak, listen and understand the Thai language as prescribed in the Regulations. Under the exception of Section 11 of the Nationality Act, B.E.2508 (1965) a foreigner needs only one of the following qualifications as listed below to apply for naturalization, in addition to conditions (1), (2) and (3) of Section 10. (1) The person has rendered distinguished service to Thailand or has done acts to the benefit of official service which are deemed suitable by the Minister. (2) The person is a child, wife or husband of a person who has been naturalized as a Thai or has regained their Thai nationality. (3) The person used to have Thai nationality. (4) The person is a husband of a Thai national. Under the exception of Section 12 paragraph 2 of the Nationality Act, B.E.2508 (1965), foreigners who apply for naturalization can also apply for their children who are not a legal adults in accordance with Thai law, but have a domicile in Thailand in addition to condition (2) of Section 10. windowonphuket.com

PEOPLE.KAWEE NGANTAWEE
Kawee Ngantawee Phuket native Kawee Ngantawee, developer of the Layan Tara villas project, sees steady growth and higher standards prevailing in Phuket over the long term as a consequence of ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) memberhip.
Where do you come from? I was born in Phuket; this is my hometown
Which is your favourite project since you started your business? Layan Tara, because it’s the kind of place I would like to live in.
What’s unique about Layan Tara? It’s affordable luxury. Layan Tara is a collection of beautiful tropical villas and pool villas in a very private resort-style setting with three zones, each with villas to suit different lifestyles, so you always get just the right kind of space for your needs. The villas come fully furnished and fitted out with everything you need to just bring your bags and move in, hassle free.
Where’s your main target market? Layan Tara caters to three specific markets: We now have luxury villas available leasehold and freehold with flexible payment plans for private local and international buyers at prices well under the market average for this class of residence. Property agents and investors can benefit greatly from our rental assistance programme and resort-style common areas and services. Thirdly, Layan Tara is an excellent option for tour operators and groups with international clientele seeking high-end accommodation.
What changes have you seen in Phuket’s property market since you’ve been a developer? Phuket’s international tourism industry has grown fast, and the local population has grown with it, so there has been a boom in large and small properties. This has brought stability, confidence and choice to the Phuket property market, making property investment here a wise choice. However, real quality can still be hard to come by so we continue to focus on high standards.
What is your approach to marketing? Layan Villas caters to private and corporate investors seeking villas priced 10 million baht upwards, so we work with buyers directly or through reputable agencies in this particular market. We also advertise in quality publications such as Window on Phuket to maintain brand awareness.
What impact do you expect the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) to have on Phuket’s property market? It’s clear that Phuket has the opportunity to flourish as a regional hub for quality tourism, commerce and leisure, so I’m confident we’ll continue to see steady growth and higher standards prevail over the long term.
What do you like most about what you do now? Working with a dedicated and innovative team. It’s very stimulating and it’s great to be helping to build a better Phuket together.
What are the hardest things you have to overcome as a Phuket property developer? Is it finding a good labour force, or is it the island’s infrastructure, or something else? Tell us what makes your life different than it would be in, for example, Singapore. Yes, finding a reliable labour force can be a challenge so we have our own well-trained and dedicated team in all areas of expertise. There are challenges every day. However, the tourism and property markets in Phuket are a mainstay of the country’s economy, so more investment in infrastructure is essential if we are to be on par with Singapore.
How would you describe your management style? When you have dedicated and enthusiastic staff it’s better to have a hands-off approach and let them (your staff ) do what they’re good at. TRAVEL.SONGKRAN IN PHUKET
TRAVEL.SONGKRAN IN PHUKET
Thailand’s New Year celebration is a wet and wild event throughout the country, but the Phuket version is the most international and perhaps the most boisterous of all.
The word Songkran is from the Sanskrit ‘Sangkranti’, which means ‘to move upwards’ or ‘to be about to change’. On the eve of the festival, Thais spring clean their homes, symbolically expelling any bad luck from the old year and prepare for good fortune in the new. Food and
No visitor who has ever been here during the month of April can have avoided coming into contact with the enchanting, hilarious, and occasionally exasperating and downright dangerous watery explosion of public celebration which is Songkran.
Thais who have moved from their home towns always try to return to their families for Songkran and all forms of transport are booked solid. For this reason you should try to avoid travelling before, during or immediately after the holiday, particularly by bus or train. In many towns and villages, a Buddha image is carried in a procession through the streets and people sprinkle water upon it, to show their respect. In the southern provinces, village elders are invited to the temple and young people splash water on their heads, signaling their blessings of health and long life. The elders respond by wishing the young, vigour, wealth and happiness. In another delightful custom, Thais visit their elderly relatives bringing them new clothes for the coming year.
Thailand's most celebrated festival is Songkran n – the Thai new year. It starts on April 13 and lasts asts for between three and ten days, depending on ket). where you’re resident (Just three days in Phuket). For most, it’s lots of fun and an excuse to cooll off at what is usually the hottest time of the year. However, there’s a deeper significance to o n our Songkran which is rooted in our history and in ps it beliefs. Allow us to tell you about this. Perhaps will enhance your enjoyment of the event.

other contributions are offered to the monks at the temple early on the morning of the 13th, after which there are ceremonial prayers. Water is also poured on the ground, or on the roots of an ancient tree, symbolising a blessing to ancestors.

TRAVEL.SONGKRAN IN PHUKET
ELECTRICAL SUPPLY HARDWARE AIR CONDITIONING PLUMBING
Patong is host to the most frenzied Songkran celebrations, while Phuket City comes in at a close second. In addition to days of street parties, there are a number of traditional activities to join as well.
68 E2
Increasingly, though, urban Thais have come to celebrate the holiday in a frenzy of water-throwing. Nobody is immune. One of my fondest memories of Songkran is of an immaculately uniformed policeman (they’re normally very big on dignity) smiling good-naturedly as he emptied water from his highly polished boots. Unfortunately these high jinks can sometimes get out of hand. Motorised gangs with high pressure water cannons, iced water and lots of enthusiasm, get each other (and anybody else) wet, in running battles through the streets. But speeding traffic, wet roads and alcoholic bravado make for a dangerous cocktail. In the recent past, the holidays have been marred by tragic loss of life and injury so, inevitably, the authorities have moved in to safeguard life and limb. Thailand’s New Year celebration is a wet and wild event throughout the country, but the Phuket version is the most international, and perhaps the most boisterous, of all. Tourists, expats and Thais alike arm themselves to the teeth with water guns, powder and buckets and let loose for three days of heavy dousing (and, it must be said, some heavy drinking too). Water battles take place along all the main roads throughout the island, and pick-up trucks turn into roving water-war vehicles overloaded with people who splash everyone they pass by as they cruise the soggy streets.
Patong is host to the most frenzied Songkran celebrations, while Phuket City comes in at a close second. In addition to days of street parties, there are a number of traditional activities to join as well. At the time of writing the full schedule of events had not yet been finalised, but porbable activities include a merit-making ceremony at Queen Sirikit park in Phuket City on the morning of April 13 and festivities at Saphan Hin park on each day of Songkran from 9am to 6pm. More sacred aspects of the festival that can be seen around the island include processions of Buddha images and ceremonies to pay homage to elders with scented lustral water. Forget about getting anywhere on these days without getting soaked, especially if you’re on a motorbike. And no one’s immune to a drenching, not even officials on duty. There really is no way of avoiding a soaking, unless you stay in your hotel. Our advice is, ‘If you can’t beat them, join them.’ But don’t forget to put wallets, mobile 'phones, cigarettes, lighters etc in a watertight plastic bag.

LIVING.LAGUNA PHUKET INTERNATIONAL MARATHON
DOUBLE THE FUN AND ‘RUN PARADISE’ at the 11th Laguna Phuket Marathon 4 – 5 June 2016
ADVERTORIAL
A
fter a record breaking, sold-out year in 2015, when close to 6,000 runners participated in the AIMS measured and certified marathon (42.195 km), the half-marathon (21.097 km), the 10.5km run, the 5km walk, and the 2km kids’ run, this year the 11th Laguna Phuket Marathon is doubling the fun by spreading the races over the course of two days – 4-5 June, 2016. Runners participating in the 2km, 5km and 10.5km events will get to go first on the afternoon of Saturday, 4 June, while the half marathon and marathon races will take place early morning on Sunday, 5 June. This way, runners and spectators alike will have the chance to fully enjoy both the races and activities at the event. This arrangement also provides a chance for runners participating in
the half marathon and marathon races to squeeze in an extra practice or warm-up run in the 10.5km run on Saturday afternoon before their big race on Sunday. All they’ll have to do is register for races on both days. And all that effort will certainly not go unrecognised as the organisers of the Laguna Phuket Marathon, Go Adventure Asia, have designed finishers’ medals for the 10.5km run, the half-marathon and marathon to join together to create one spectacular, unique medal. Early-bird registration for the 11th Laguna Phuket International Marathon is coming close to an end with the deadline on 29 February, 2016. For more information and registration, please visit www.phuketmarathon.com

Wat Chalong
101 D3
The most popular of all the temples in Phuket is Wat Chalong, built during the reign of King Rama II (1809-1842) and since subject to much extension. The temple contains several structures and halls, one of which features a gilt-covered statue of the famous and revered Luang Poh Cham, plus statues of Luang Poh Chuang and Luang Poh Gleum, all ex-abbots of the temple. The Grand Pagoda is decorated with wall paintings of scenes from the Buddha’s life and features various Buddha images.
Kathu Waterfall
53 C4
Phuket can’t compete with Niagara or Victoria when it comes to waterfalls. However, we do have several picturesque cascades, and during the southwest monsoon a large volume of rain is deposited on the hills, so the run-off can produce some spectacular volumes over the waterfalls. One near to the main resorts is Kathu Waterfall, which has a shaded walk through the jungle above the falls. The only sounds to disturb the serenity are the wild bird calls and the sibilance of the rushing waters. At the foot of the cascade is a small restaurant - a favourite meeting place for Thai families on the weekend.
Explore the island If you have the time and inclination, why not rent a motorcycle or car and explore Phuket independently? Get hold of IMAGE asia’s free Map of Phuket or buy a copy of Streets of Phuket and you can’t really get lost. This is an island, so if you keep going you’ll eventually be back where you started! Follow the winding coast roads and discover uncrowded beaches. Head inland and visit small farming communities, where people still live in much the same way as they have for hundreds of years. Remember that you must wear a crash helmet on a motorcycle; it’s the law and it makes sens! For those visiting from Europe or the United States, note that we drive on the left here! Motorcycle rentals start at 150 baht per day and small jeeps are available from 900 baht per day. If you rent for a week or longer you’ll be able to negotiate a better rate.
