Andy Dowden, Managing Director, Andaman Marine Consultants, organisers of Phuket International Boat Show

With Andy Dowden, Managing Director, Andaman Marine Consultants, organisers of Phuket International Boat Show (PIMEX) Phuket old hand, Andy Dowden, Managing Director of Andaman Marine Consultants, organisers of Phuket International Boat Show has had more than 30 years’ experience in Thailand’s marine industry. We sat down with him to discuss boat show, marine industry and the future. “2016 will mark the 13th Phuket International Boat Show. Since the show’s launch in 2003, the island and its marine industry have seen many ups and downs. I’m proud of the show’s beginnings and what it has become – Southeast Asia’s longestrunning marine and lifestyle show and a key event on the regional marine calendar.” Looking forward to the future of the show, Dowden commented, “We’ll continue to work with all industry stakeholders – government and private sector – and will further develop the boat show platform to promote and market Phuket and Thailand’s marine industry.” With regards to the marine industry, Dowden explained that, “Phuket remains the yachting playground of Asia and the cruising grounds are second to none. While there are countries in the region with quality marine facilities, Phuket is still the place where most will come to play. 40 percent of the world’s population lives within a six-hour flight of Phuket and we are also within easy reach are two of the world’s biggest countries – India and China. While perhaps not yet into boating, the potential of the Chinese market is huge, both for charter and sales, which will also benefit marina, maintenance and other marine services.”

Looking to the future, Dowden is positive as regards the outlook for Phuket and Thailand’s marine industry. “I expect to see growth in the charter market, both in Phuket and around the country. Phuket has the onshore and offshore assets to become one of the best charter destinations in the world and I think business will grow considerably over the next five to 10 years. I also expect to see the development of more marinas – another policy by the current government.” “Lastly, in my opinion, the single most important boost to the island’s marine economy would be to develop a superyacht refit facility. The skills base on the island is already there but currently there is no yard capable of lifting yachts over 45m. As the number of yachts basing themselves in Asia increases, taking advantage of the year-round season, the potential for Phuket to be the best refit centre in the world is huge.” Phuket’s superyacht appeal looks set to grow. Pictured: Superyacht Perseus at the 2010 Phuket King’s Cup Regatta. Photo by Duncan Worthington.

When asked about superyachts Dowden shared his insights and support of recent government moves.

“The recent introduction of a 12-month superyacht charter license is a positive step and shows vision on the part of the government. While the licence has already come into effect, there are still some areas that need to be worked on. I believe these challenges will be overcome but it may take more time. However, the Phuket International Boat Show will continue to offer support and assistance wherever possible.”

Finale sets stage for next year’s 30th Anniversary celebrations

I

n honour of the His Majesty the King of Thailand, the 29th Phuket King’s Cup Regatta staged the most prestigious regatta in Asia, raising the cachet of Phuket as a premier sports sailing and high-end lifestyle destination. Consisting of five days of racing on scenic courses amidst the beautiful Andaman Sea islands, the regatta draws over 1,500 sailors and participants from around the world, reaffirming Phuket’s reputation as an amazing international marine sports and lifestyle locale. ADVERTORIAL

“Over the past three decades, there is no question that the King’s Cup, with HM’s imprimatur, has been the catalyst for the enormous advance of water sports in the Kingdom, resulting in many world class competitions coming to our shores. The latest show of faith is the international Optimist class approving a world championship next July to be raced at the Royal Varuna Yacht Club in Pattaya. I congratulate all the winners and all who have competed in a fair, friendly sail fest and urge all to return to Phuket for next year’s 30th Phuket Kings Cup Regatta,” said Whitcraft. Race Director Simon James concluded, “This year has seen one of the smallest number of protests in the recent history of the King’s Cup, and I think our course selection has resulted in making nearly every class really close, really competitive.”

Winners of 29th Phuket King’s Cup Regatta 2015 Kevin Whitcraft, President of the organising committee, said, “On behalf of the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta Committee, it is an honour to organise this most prestigious regatta to sail in honour of our King, the Regatta Royal Patron, who celebrated his 88th birthday this year. This year’s keelboat and multihull fleets consisted of 90 craft, divided into 13 classes, as well as some 78 dinghies in the International Dinghy Class, making a total record of 168 entries with over 1,500 sailors and participants from over 40 countries.”

BOATS.RIVIERA REVIEW

RIVIERA REVIEW.BOATS

The spacious and sumptuous saloon – which also features premium brand appliances and furnishings, including two lounges – offers a clear view not only of the almost 360-degree water-view vista but also the massive, widescreen 48” LED TV that rises electronically from the forward dash, creating a floating sports arena or movie theatre experience. “Natural light and fresh air is introduced through opening tinted saloon side windows which, in tandem with the massive front windscreen, filter light below through the companionway and to the accommodation deck,” says Mr Longhurst.

The future is now With her contemporary styling and impeccable bluewater heritage, the robust Riviera 57 Enclosed exhibits powerful and noble lines with muscular sheer forward and deep topside dimensions, giving her a freeboard akin to a much larger yacht altogether.

Riviera launches its new

Her hull lines run straight aft from the maximum midship beam of 5.13m (16’ 10”) which, in turn, provides an extremely buoyant lift and an easy planing surface, while her keel delivers straight tracking and great stability, enhancing her penultimate blue-water performance.

57 Enclosed Flybridge – the embodiment of innovation

The Riviera 57 Enclosed Flybridge creates a whole new indoor/outdoor living experience with a clever new cockpit design, complete with large transom and mezzanine lounges, wet bar, barbecue, fridge and icemaker. She also retains the cockpit connectivity which Riviera has made an art form, with an aft modern galley with high-end appliances and solid surface bench tops, as well as a beautifully crafted sliding door and awning window with solid stainless steel frame built into the rear bulkhead – the window opening out and over the mezzanine to position the chef right at the centre of the social scene.

Welcome to the newest member of iconic Riviera’s impressive and supremely seaworthy collection of flybridge luxury motor yachts – the 57 Enclosed Flybridge. Stylish, sophisticated and sublime, the three-stateroom/ two bathroom Riviera 57 Enclosed Flybridge – with full beam master stateroom – is the embodiment of innovation, from her fresh-thinking design to her state-ofthe-art navigation systems, and right through to her final fit-out and luxuriously polished finish. Riviera chairman and owner Rodney Longhurst says the 2015 Australian Marine Industry Exporter of the Year’s dedicated team has integrated easy-to-use and dependable marine systems into the new 57 Enclosed, including the full features of the innovative Volvo Glass Cockpit navigation and CZone digital switching systems.

“The Riviera 57 Enclosed Flybridge’s new and distinctive design has everything in perfect proportion but it is when you step aboard that the magnitude of the living and accommodation space reveals itself.

“The master stateroom is located amidships in the most stable part of the yacht, and defies convention for a vessel of this size, luxuriating right across the full beam and featuring a king-sized bed and with upholstered headboard detailing. “The forward guest stateroom mirrors the level of luxury in the master and positions a queen-size walk-around bed in pride of place, and also its own ensuite bathroom which, with twin entry, doubles as the day head. “The starboard stateroom is also air-conditioned and has adult-sized upper and lower beds, also with innerspring mattresses and a deck hatch for ventilation, as well as reading and overhead lighting.”

BOATS.RIVIERA REVIEW

A flybridge to look up to The new Riviera 57’s fully enclosed flybridge is another complete revelation, and as you ascend the highly detailed internal staircase you arrive at the state-of-the-art ergonomic forward helm. “Skippers will really appreciate the three massive clear, tempered windscreens with excellent visibility, and two fully adjustable chairs from which all essential navigational and systems controls are within easy reach,” says Mr Longhurst, whose passion for excellence underpins Riviera’s evolution on the world stage. “The Riviera Enclosed Flybridge’s all-new dash design has enough room for three 19” multi-function display screens, as well as dedicated switches for the horn and pantographic wipers with intermittent settings, the overhead and navigation lights, and also the intercom to both the galley and engine room. “You will also find convenient drink-holders, a centre console and a moulded recess forward for mobile phones, ensuring everything is right where it should be when you need it.” Seamlessly integrating the state-of-the-art Volvo Penta Glass Cockpit navigation system with CZone digital switching very much confirms Riviera’s commitment to merging technology with dependability and easy-to-use innovations designed to enhance your time aboard. And it places the supremely seaworthy Riviera 57 Enclosed Flybridge at the very forefront of world-class recreational flybridge yachts of this size. The flybridge is also enormous and comfortable with L-shaped seating which has rod or general storage underneath, table, slumber seat with fridge forward as well as a wet bar and sink. Subtly integrated above is a huge sliding electric sunroof which, together with sliding-open side windows, creates a virtual sky lounge full of light, space and fresh air.

Aft is a rear awning window and sliding door – also set in a strong and highly polished stainless steel frame – that open out to the teak-laid rear deck of the flybridge, which also has a lounge and aft docking station with joystick, throttles and steering wheel for IPS, or throttles and bow thruster for the shaft-drive model.

Your choice of pod or shaft drive And then there is perhaps the most heroic part of the Riviera 57 Enclosed Flybridge, the engineering department that makes it possible for owners to select their personal preference of either pod or conventional shaft drive propulsion. “There are three choices for a drive package for new the 57 Enclosed Flybridge – a IPS2-950, IPS2-1200 or the conventional D13 shaft drive,” said Mr Longhurst. The standard set-up is the very popular twin IPS2-950 (533kW / 725hp) pod configuration with D11 engines, which delivers Volvo’s impressive fuel efficiency, low noise levels, long cruising range and high top-end speed. The IPS pod propulsion system already offers the joys of joystick maneuverability, Dynamic Positioning System for station-holding while preparing lines and fenders or while waiting off a fuel jetty, as well Anti-Corrosion Protection and Auto-Pilot, and optional auto-trimming features. However, the Glass Cockpit takes the overview and control of engines and navigation, including optional charts, sonar and radar (even auto-pilot) to extraordinary new heights … and all in one place, and in the case of IPS, also extends to auto-trim and full slow-speed steering, as well as the outstanding maneuverability of SportFish mode, and the clean presentation of bait using the bypass exhaust features of Clear Wake. “Of course the option is yours to upgrade to the newgeneration IPS2-1200 (662kW / 900hp) system, with powerful D13 engines, or you can choose the innovative new Volvo Penta D13-Series (662kW / 900hp) shaft drive propulsion system.

The D13 shaft drive 57 Enclosed Flybridge models – also with glass navigation features at the bridge – have twin controls operating bow and stern thrusters both at the helm and aft flybridge docking station, as well as Electronic Vessel Control (EVC) levers integrating with cruise control, low-speed mode and single-lever mode. Courtesy of the Quickshift gearboxes, owners of the 57 Enclosed shaft drive models also have the choice to incorporate Twin Disc’s Express Joystick System (EJS) which smoothly and simultaneously actuates and controls engines, transmissions, propellers and thrusters, enabling a skipper to easily, precisely and confidently manoeuvre the yacht in challenging docking situations.

RIVIERA 57 ENCLOSED FLYBRIDGE Key features • Sleek external styling • New cockpit design creates an entirely new indoor/ outdoor experience • Wide walk-around side decks with thoughtfullyplaced rails for added safety • Large foredeck with optional sun pad or davit for tender • Luxurious internal furnishings, high-end appliances • Opening saloon side windows enhance crossventilation • Three-stateroom, two-bathroom accommodation plan. And with both pod and shaft drive models, the fully integrated CZone system enhances the ease of monitoring and operation of the Riviera 57’s onboard systems even further, extending centralised touch-screen control to lighting, pumps, batteries, entertainment systems and appliances. Riviera has indeed put to purpose every piece of available space onboard the new 57 Enclosed Flybridge, with cutting edge computer software allowing Riviera’s team of talented and passionate international designers to maximise living and storage space while at the same time ensuring there is convenient access to every key maintenance point, ensuring service costs are kept to a minimum. “Of course, this thoughtful built-to-last consideration for our Riviera family of owners is a key part of our ethos of doing all we can to help our valued owners achieve … ‘the ultimate boating experience’,” says Mr Longhurst. LIVING THE DREAM

A

s soon as we arrived the concierge took my car keys while a porter took our luggage. The check-in was as it should be: efficient, effortless and fast. A comfortable sofa to sit on, along with a complimentary drink and cold towel, while paperwork was being completed was a great way to ease into relaxed resort mode. We were a little early for the room, so opted to have lunch at the Trilogy Restaurant overlooking the pool. I chose a Wagyu Steak Burger with foie gras and caramelised onions for a tasty but fairly light lunch. My partner went for a traditional Pad Thai. Although at opposite ends of the culinary spectrum, both were cooked to perfection. After lunch, we headed up to our 6th floor room to change and then on to the 350 sqm. Sanctuary spa for a 30 minute body scrub, followed by a 90 minute deep tissue oil massage. I didn’t realise how badly I needed that, after an extra-stressful week at the office! Pure heaven – and so relaxing that I nodded off a few times and had to be gently woken up to change positions. If you have time, you might want to explore Dream Sanctuary’s “Five signature journeys… to awaken the soul and senses for total mind and body transformation”. Whichever way you look at it, a team of friendly professionals ready to pamper you is indeed something to be treasured.

We found our room to be perfectly balanced, offering simple relaxation, yet with a fresh, minimalist feel to it – but we spent so little time there! Our next brief visit to the room was to dress for cocktails at VU Rooftop Bar. This is THE best place to be to sip cocktails at sunset.

PHUKET LIVING.DREAM PHUKET HOTEL & SPA

Our plan to dine at VU was changed by a brief, but untimely, tropical shower. No problem! Guests at Dream enjoy abundant dining choices: VU, with an easy-eat menu and chill music, Trilogy Restaurant with extensive evening menu and middle-of-the-road music, Indulge – a gentleman’s bar downstairs with a tapas menu and jazz / blues tunes. And of course, there’s a full 24-hour à la carte room service option, or even your own private chef cooking in your room – which comes equipped with oven and counter top with crockery, cutlery and cooking utensils provided on request.

We relocated to the ground floor to Indulge wine lounge for dinner. I started off with a bourbon-based Dream signature cocktail called Naked, while my partner had a Dreamosa, a concoction of Tanqueray gin, orange basil, Thai syrup, lime juice and sparkling wine. We kicked off dinner with a flavoursome Lobster Bisque and for main course we both ordered a medium/rare Rack of Lamb, accompanied by a wine sauce and garden vegetables. Dessert was coffee and a Tiramisu for me and the Thai classic dessert, Mango and Sticky Rice for my partner.

The décor was very much old traditional gentlemen’s club style, with comfy leather chairs and loungers, a cigar cabinet and a meeting room adjoining.

The décor was very much old traditional gentlemen’s club style, with comfy leather chairs and loungers, a cigar cabinet and a meeting room adjoining. All of the restaurants had extensive wine, champagne, spirits and beer menus. The night was still young and we heard from the staff that there was a visiting group of 240 sailors partying at Dream Beach, so we decided to tag along and took the Dream BMW to Dream Beach. They are in the process of importing a traditional Filipino ‘Jeepnie’ for guest transport to and from Dream Beach, which will make for a more colourful option for the short hop.

Another cool feature was the opportunity to choose your style of pillow – so to avoid that next-morning painful crick in the neck.

When it comes to hotel rooms these days, the finer touches make all the difference. The dual control air-conditioning was a bonus, together with the ceiling fans. We were able to set the air-conditioning temperature fairly high and the fans on low speed – a good combination. But we were caught in a quandary: stay in our luxurious room and enjoy the amenities, including the large made-for-two stone bath tub, standing alone in the middle of the open bathroom, or go out and enjoy all the other amenities Dream has to offer. I am glad all my decisions are not so difficult!

Dream Beach was throbbing when we arrived, with a mix of DJ chill music and DJ backed by a brilliant saxophone player, who hopped onto the bar impromptu and played along with the tunes. The pool was full of dancing guests having a great time. The venue soaked up these 240 guests and more with ease and could easily handle at least double that before it would start to feel a bit crowded. We ended our night at around midnight and took the complimentary transport back to the hotel for our first real chance to explore our room. In our absence, the bed had been turned down, slippers and a mat placed just where needed and a complimentary packet of dried fruits on hand. We discovered that we could dial in a ‘Dream music programme’ with music on request including Chill, Contemporary, Classical and Jazz. The Dream team sets up an iPod and docking station in your room and your selection is played at turndown service in the evening.

We ended our night at around midnight and took the complimentary transport back to the hotel for our first real chance to explore the room.

Another cool feature was the opportunity to choose your style of pillow – so to avoid that next-morning painful crick in the neck. Available options included buckwheat (remains cooler than down/fibre or foam pillows), neck (posture shaped), cotton (soft and gentle) and non-allergenic (synthetic hollow-fill microfiber). We chose the cotton pillows which, together with the impressively comfortable ‘memory foam’ mattress, gave us a perfect night’s sleep.

A choice had to be made – it was morning now and breakfast beckoned, so we reluctantly dragged ourselves out of bed at around 9.30 and headed off to Trilogy. I enjoyed a big à la carte big breakfast of freshly squeezed orange juice, eggs, bacon, hash browns, fried cherry tomatoes, toast and coffee. My more restrained and health-conscious partner was happy to be served yogurt with cereal, fruit, juice and tea. Each to his or her own… One thing we noticed throughout both the beach club and the resort was the careful attention given to an even floor, with no tricky, hard-to-see dips and rises. Both places are disabled-friendly, with ramps where needed. There are also special room facilities for guest with impaired mobility. Doors are wide and lifts are strategically located.

PEOPLE.WORAWUTH HONGTONG

47

Worawuth Hongtong Where do you come from and how long have you lived in Phuket. which part of the island do you call home? I come from Ratchaburi, a small province in the west of Thailand. I’ve been living in Phuket for more than 10 years now, in the Thalang District near Layan Beach.

How long have you been in the property business? – and how did you get started in it? It’s been seven years now – I first started in a building contractors company.

Please tell us about your different businesses and how they all fit together We act as consultants for Villas Aelita and Villas Bangtao and Happy Village is a Thai-style project we manage through Nickels Perfect Properties, as we do The Happy Place Condo. But Verve Villas is my first high-end project, through a new management company called Prosperous Developer.

Which has been your favourite project since starting off in the business and why? It has to be Verve Villas as it’s a unique development aimed at those with modern tastes. With Verve Villas I’ve deliberately stayed away from the standard Thai-style design so common on the Island. ‘Best Quality, Style and Luxury’ is our Motto at Verve and this is reflected in the choice of materials we’ve used in this construction. Out of curiosity, I asked to see a dedicated room specifically set up close to reception for those with mobility difficulties. The doors were sliding, there were ample rails in the bathroom and plenty of turning space, with phones handy on the wall. There are a lot of smart things going on at Dream, not directed to any particular age group. Every detail is dedicated to the guests’ wellbeing, no matter who you are.

Checkout time was midday so we had time for a last swim and relax at the poolside bar. Not being daytime drinkers, we opted for a couple of fruit smoothies – a Mango a Go Go and an Orangasm, both enjoyed while we were partly submerged on our bar stools in the pool. We then transitioned to the poolside, partly-submerged loungers and then to the poolside salas to make sure we had our fill of relaxation before returning to our room. We looked at, but didn’t try, the well-equipped gym… there’s only so much time in a day.

What’s unique about Verve Villas? What makes it stand out from the crowd? What’s different is its design and style. If you look around the island a little, you’ll begin to notice similarities in the various building projects. We’re different; so if you’re seeking something out of the ordinary you’ll find it with us.

Where is your main target market? Domestic? International? If international, which countries will most of your buyers come from? Well, I build high-quality properties so they cost a lot and they’re definitely targeted at foreign customers, mostly within ASEAN countries such as Hong Kong, but we also market to Australian customers and even Thai buyers if they’re interested.

Back to our room for a final freshen up and a dip in a frothy bath full of bath salts for 30 minutes or so and we were ready to check out. We must have packed in three days of activities in just one day and night, yet still felt totally relaxed and refreshed. We definitely felt like we’d had a good, albeit short, break from reality at Dream – where the staff were knowledgeable, personable, courteous and, although unobtrusive, always there when needed.

What changes have you seen in the Phuket property market since you’ve become a developer? There’ve been big changes and so yes, it’s all different from when I first started out. I guess there’s a lot more choice nowadays because there are so many options – but this is good for customers.

What is your approach to marketing? We promote Verve Villas by marketing in magazines, online, social media, brochures and through property agencies. In that way clients will get to know us and what we have to offer.

What impact do you expect the coming ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) to have on Phuket’s property market? I think business will be made more exciting and I’m planning ahead for this.

What do you like most about what you do now? I really enjoy developing our properties with the best quality possible when it comes to materials and, of course, to install the best furniture. That’s my policy to ensure success.

What are the hardest things you have to overcome as a Phuket property developer? I think the real problem is corruption. That problem has still to be resolved and is the main reason for unforeseen higher costs in the whole process.

How would you describe your management style and how many people do you manage directly?

Fond memories and good experiences travel well – and we took a number of each away with us.

Sticking to the rules, and applying kindness but not pity. I have over 20 people in my management team, not including labourers on the construction projects.

TRAVEL.PHI PHI ISLANDS

TRAVEL.PHI PHI ISLANDS

PHI PHI ISLANDS Brought to worldwide attention by the 2000 Hollywood adventure drama, The Beach, the Phi Phi Islands are Thailand’s superstars. The islands are a bit of a backpacker legend and a hot topic of conversation amongst many travellers. Their natural beauty is enough to entice any visitor, as the sheer and stately limestone karsts and verdant jungle views are absolutely breathtaking. However, it tends to be the allure of the party scene that brings most visitors Phi Phi.

T

he Phi Phi Islands are located equidistant between Phuket Island and Krabi Province on the mainland. There are a number of speedboats and ferries leaving every day at various times and any hotel or tour operator can help with buying tickets and transfers to the pier.

Phi Phi’s main islands are Koh Phi Phi Don and Koh Phi Phi Leh. Koh Phi Phi Leh is a day-tripper’s paradise, and is where the majority of The Beach was filmed. Koh Phi Phi Leh is home to striking Maya Bay – the eponymous ‘beach’ of the movie. Sheltered on three sides by towering 100-metre-high cliffs, whitesand Maya Bay enjoys striking turquoise waters teeming with vividly coloured tropical marine life. Perfect for snorkelling, Maya Bay also has some great scuba diving.

TRAVEL.PHI PHI ISLANDS

TRAVEL.PHI PHI ISLANDS

Diving the Phi Phi Islands is also a popular activity, and avid divers from around the world come to Phi Phi Don to do so. There are a number of dive shops to choose from, and all have staff on hand who speak a variety of languages. For those wanting to learn to dive, the operators on Phi Phi Don have packages offering basic PADI and SSI courses, while more advanced courses are also available.

Phi Phi Don’s also famous for its nightly fire shows. There are a handful of talented fire dancers on the island that amaze the crowds on a nightly basis with their remarkable skills.

Back to that nightlife... on any given night, there’s a party to be found. Just about every beach bar and club on Phi Phi Don offers happy hour specials, where the island’s mixologists concoct refreshing cocktails utilising local ingredients such as coconuts, pineapples, and whatever fruit’s in season, while most of Phi Phi Don’s west-coast bars provide the perfect place to watch the sun set and hug the island’s cliffs. Phi Phi Don’s also famous for its nightly fire shows. There is a handful of talented fire dancers on the island that amazes the crowds on a nightly basis with their remarkable skills.

For the more experienced snorkeller, Shark Point, easily accessible from Long Beach, offers the chance to see black-tip reef sharks in their natural habitat. Snorkelling the areas around Phi Phi Don is a fantastic experience, as the waters offer ample marine life and the coral reefs are expansive. Snorkellers should exercise caution as currents can be strong and, during the SW monsoon season, the swell can be dangerous. If in doubt, go with an organised snorkelling trip.

But Koh Phi Phi Don is where the legendary nightlife is. The island’s infrastructure has been developed into a network of high-end resorts, affordable accommodation, restaurants, cafés and souvenir shops, as well as laid-back beach bars and clubs. Many travellers stop off on Phi Phi Don for a few days to get the most out of it. Although accommodation is plentiful on the island, it’s best to book beforehand to ensure the best value for money. However, if you do arrive on Phi Phi Don without accommodation, rest assured that one of the many touts at the pier will be able to help you sort out something for the night.

Although lazing about the island’s beaches and pools is a popular activity, for the more adventurous traveller, renting one of the island’s elaborately decorated long-tail boats is a must-do. Located pretty much near wherever you are, the long-tail boats offer half- and full-day trips to lesser-known sights and islands around Phi Phi, including Bamboo Island, Mosquito Island and Hin Klang.

And Phi Phi’s quickly becoming a foodie paradise. The island’s eateries offer local cuisine, lots of fresh seafood, Scandinavian fare and an assortment of Western favourites, as well popular Italian dishes, with pizza being an island staple. There’s also a small, local Thai market within the village if you want to buy fresh fruits and veggies or to sample a spicy Thai curry. The island’s souvenir shops sell the usual T-shirts, fisherman pants, sarongs and postcards, but there are also a few interesting artisan shops in the village well worth taking a look at, as they offer handmade leather goods such as bags and shoes at affordable prices. Phi Phi also has ample pharmacies and minimarts in case you’ve forgotten to pack your sunscreen, vitamins or toothpaste.

Diving around the Phi Phi Islands is also a popular activity, and avid divers from around the world come to Phi Phi Don to do so.

Koh Phi Phi Don also offers a bit of a jungle experience in the form of hiking up to the viewpoint in the centre of the island. The climb is somewhat strenuous and steep, and it normally takes 30-40 minutes. It’s best to take a water bottle along, as the hundreds of steps and twisting trails up to the peak can be difficult in the heat, and you may want to stop for a short break. Upon reaching the top of the viewpoint, hikers are rewarded with lush views of the island and its neighbours, along with the quieter eastern beaches. The Phi Phi Islands offer something for everyone. They make for a good day trip from Phuket or Krabi and are popular for a few days stopover on the way to other destinations further afield. Whether you are hoping to relax or to experience an epic beach party, the Phi Phi Islands is unlikely to disappoint.

TRAVEL.UNTOUCHED THAILAND

TRAVEL.UNTOUCHED THAILAND

A woman walking home from the fields.

The people of Issan are some of the friendliest and most hospitable you’ll meet.

Public transport is surprisingly effective, extensive and affordable, but to really get up close and personal with these roads less travelled, rent a vehicle and go explore on your own.

Untouched

A good place to start is in Ubon Ratchathani. The city, in the easternmost part of Thailand close to the border with Laos, is anything but a backwater – except perhaps in conventional tourism terms – and visitors will perhaps be surprised to see hip cafés and stylish boutiques next to traditional wet markets and modest street kitchens. Ever since a group of Lao princes fled Vientiane and was given royal protection by King Taksin in Ubon, the city has been a place of convergence for various peoples and nationalities, most notably Laotians, but also Chinese and Vietnamese. The diversity is first and foremost felt in the local dishes, which are a mix of pungent salads, spicy soups and fresh spring rolls. A good place to sample the food on offer is Talat Ha (market five).

By Lisa Lee

Seen from a travel perspective the north-eastern part of Thailand, or Issan as the Thais know it, is relatively untouched, which is all the more reason to go. Northeastern Thailand is the most rural part of the country with most of the population employed in agriculture.

The best way to experience Issan is by road. The region is the least developed in Thailand and although cities like Ubon Ratchathani, Khon Kaen and Udon Thani are rapidly developing, the vast majority of Issan comprises swathes of arable land and misty mountain ranges intercepted by roads of varying standards that connect the many small villages. Public transport is surprisingly effective, extensive and affordable, but to really get up close and personal with these roads less travelled, rent a vehicle and go explore on your own. Talat Ha in Ubon Ratchathani is a great place to visit to become familiar with some of the regional dishes of Issan.

Distances are not greater and you can traverse the region on a motorbike in a day or two.

A typical Issan meal consists of young papaya salad, minced duck salad, sticky rice and herby greens.

Farming conditions can be difficult in the Northeast, especially during drought.

Buffalos are still used in many small farming villages.

Maybe you won’t find that rare piece of jewellery or an ancient Buddhist relic, but you’ll no doubt be amused and entertained by the local colour.

Drive north along the border to Mukdahan, a small trading town on the banks of the Mekong River. The province is home to a number of ethnic minorities as well as sizeable groups of people from Laos and Vietnam, but it is the drive into town that is the most compelling reason to visit as it takes you along winding roads through lush forest, rolling hills and open fields. Once you enter the city, make your way to the river bank and marvel at the variety of bits and bobs on offer at the roadside market. Maybe you won’t find that rare piece of jewellery or an ancient Buddhist relic but you’ll no doubt be amused and entertained by the local colour.

From Mukdahan head west and let Route 12 take you through swathes of more or less arable land, through the province of Kalasin until you reach Khon Kaen, one of the largest cities in Issan and a technological and educational hub. Apart from Khon Kaen University and the city’s silk production, Khon Kaen is known for its grilled chicken, one of the cornerstones in what Thai people consider a typical Issan meal. Each villa can also be tailored to suit buyers’ needs by adding an additional bedroom, study, or rumpus room making it a truly unique development.

FINISH ‘Quality, style and luxury’ is our motto at Verve and this is reflected in the choice of materials we have used throughout. From sensual stonework, rich-tone Asiatic hardwoods, granite bench tops and expansive glass surrounds, Verve will impress from the moment you walk through the front gates. Our quality kitchen and bathroom fittings are a key feature as is the sloping roof design with hardwood ceiling and windows that afford an abundance of natural light. ISS Security services ADVERTORIAL

Leader in electronic security system integration

In stock Italian porcelain tiles and the highest quality European certified porcelain tiles from China, providing superior materials for home and office renovations as well as larger commercial, residential and condominium projects.

The need for integration The key systems of security are intrusion detection, access control, and video surveillance. If each of these systems is installed separately, administration and training can burden a company or property owner. Intrusion alarms occur on one system, access badges are administered in a stand-alone database, and intelligent digital video technology runs on dedicated computer equipment. Each system requires service, maintenance, administration, and training. ISS single system enables greater flexibility to add security components that can be easily integrated into the overall system, keeping the cost of capital expenditure low, and requiring little additional training.

With showrooms in Phuket and Bangkok, our boutiques offer compact, unconfused displays, taking the "bazaar" out of the tile showroom and presenting you with an easy reference point for all your floor and wall solutions.

We offer a wide range of solutions to flooring requirements in pricing, whilst maintaining the same high standards of material performance and customer care. TRAVEL.TRANG CAVE

TRAVEL.TRANG CAVE

TRANG CAVE by John “Caveman” Gray

Thailand’s limestone features not only provide uniquely beautiful mountains, but when brittle rock cracks and the rainwater attacks, the elements eventually create cavities known as caves. Over the eons, water passes through, enlarging them along cracks called fault lines. The combination of rainwater percolating through iron-stained rock and the pH differential (acidalkaline) eats away at the limestone. Eventually, some ‘wet’ caves grow large enough to allow human passage – including traversal by kayaks.

S

ome 17 percent of Mother Earth’s surface is limestone. Southeast Asia, especially Thailand, is peppered with limestone formations. Drive to Krabi and classic monoliths surround you. Thanks to plate movements, limestone is often uplifted, forming dramatic red, orange and yellow mountains and canyons that make great eye candy. Limestone is brittle and all things brittle eventually crack, resulting in magnificent formations that reveal even more spectacular hues. When limestone protrudes from the sea, the mineral’s basic white colouration is usually stained by iron, its symbiotic neighbour, creating the spectacular red, orange and yellow mosaics we know from Khao Sok to Satun

When limestone protrudes from the sea, the mineral’s basic white colouration is usually stained by iron, its symbiotic neighbour, creating the spectacular red, orange and yellow mosaics we know from Khao Sok to Satun

With a ceiling up to 10 metres high, the Philippines’ eight-kilometre-long Palawan Underground River is the king of limestone caves. It was created by freshwater percolation after the seas retreated. That underground river is spectacular enough, but a recent ‘discovery’ in Trang Province in southern Thailand now rivals the World Heritage site, not in length but in ‘decoration’ – meaning stalactites, stalagmites, fossils and flowstone along the limestone cave.

LOCAL TIPS: If you’re part of the five-star crowd, try the Anantara Si Kao. It’s spectacular, well designed, on the beach, luxurious and the Italian chef there is crazy enough to have you in tears of laughter. If you’re on a budget try the Pakmeng Resort next door. It has cable TV and air-con.

The valley is so spectacular I felt I was in a veritable Shangri-la, but training was more important than valley sightseeing so we returned to the village. Since my Thai is horrible, Tee delivered the Thai language training, consisting of kayak skills and safety.

Please DO NOT visit the Rocha Mong Kon Zoo and Aquarium at the far end of the beach. I’m a grown man and I cried. It was the first time I’ve ever seen aquarium tanks so small that even the fish were psychotic – and the zoo ‘prison’ next door is even worse. This raptor-rehabber was in tears over the zoo’s white belly sea eagle – one of the most majestic specimens I’ve ever seen. It’s never been out of its cage and the staff members are so boneheaded they don’t understand the eagle would return home every night if they treated it right and left the door open!

In Trang’s Tung Wa village, the locals have known the Ste Go Bon as it’s called, for eons. It’s not rocket science to them! The large cave entrance is obvious as it welcomes the many streams flowing in from the area’s dramatic amphitheatre-like valleys. Inspired by John Gray’s Sea Canoe’s (JGSC) success in Phuket, the Trang pu yai baan (local headman) purchased 25 sit-on-top kayaks for the village. However, the villagers had no training – essential when wishing to promote safe tours along a totally dark four-kilometre-long wet cave.

Land or sea limestone caves are incredibly delicate. Cave conservation is as important as human safety and no responsible person wants to harm cave decorations formed over thousands of years. After training, everyone joined in. There were a couple of tight squeezes but all went well in the end. Village guides helped neophytes negotiate the rocks and tunnels. No problems there. After an uneventful first 30 metres leading to a tight squeeze, Ste Go Bon becomes four kilometres of non-stop eye candy. Fortunately, most decorations are too high to reach, so they should remain intact for decades to come.

The valley is so spectacular thatI felt I was in a veritable Shangri-la, but training was more important than valley sightseeing so we returned to the village. Since my Thai is horrible, Tee delivered the Thai language training, consisting of kayak skills and safety.

They contacted JGSC lead guide Tee Ra Yout C and, along with our paddle guides, off we went to Trang with no idea of the treasure we were about to find. Ste Go Bon cave is fairly flat and shallow, making the extremely colourful cavern unusually safe as freshwater caves go. The stream runs through the village, so my first concern was the source. We drove dirt tracks into the jungle and eventually hiked, finding an impressive limestone amphitheatre valley sculpted by numerous high waterfalls.

From left to right: Narongrit Thongprue, Director of Satun Geopark, Teerarut “Tee” Mankul, Lead Guide and Kayak Trainer, Sermchai “Karn” Jitkeor and Teerayut “Sak” Chamnina.

The channel is wide, shallow and slow, so getting into trouble requires hard work. Those spectacular decorations are high, beyond reach, and thick. Only a true idiot would clamber off a kayak and struggle up a slippery slope to try to do any damage. Everybody applied the Golden Rule of kayaking as we all stayed together in the shallow waters. Way too soon there was light at the end of the tunnel, meaning the culmination of a spectacular trip. The cave decorations were varied and spectacular, the village kayakers well trained, helpful and professional, and at the trip’s end we found ourselves in the mangroves of Satun Province – in saltwater, the cave is that long! We paddled to a pier where our trucks were waiting to take the dazzled kayakers back to the village.

With Tee translating I presented cave safety and conservation. Tee emphasised my points. Land and sea caves must be respected. Taking caves lightly is very dangerous and cave protection amplifies the need for paddling skills. We stressed the essential concepts: • Never take off your lifejacket • Always use your flashlight • Never touch flowstone or decorations • Stay as a close group • Next time you buy kayaks, consult us first! windowonphuket.com

The two-province Ste Go Bon cave deserves to be on your ‘bucket list’. Visit it while you can!

LEGAL MATTERS.BORROWING MONEY

Raising money from your business assets

R

aising credit and finance in Thailand is tough. If you have a new business, banks will generally not wish to take credit risk until you have a proven track record of revenues to support any credit you take. Even then, credit will be subject to various conditions which may even include lodging land title as security (if your company happens to own land) or actually depositing permanently the amount of credit you wish to take in the bank’s custody – effectively defeating the purpose of taking credit. On 1 July 2015, the majority of various provisions of the Business Collateral Act (BCA) came into effect. The BCA was drafted by Government to try to help Small Medium Enterprises (SME) in Thailand to raise finance. There is also a wide attempt to try and limit the number of private ‘loan shark’ style arrangements often taken by business people who experience cash crunches but

There is also a wide attempt to try and limit the number of private ‘loan shark’ style arrangements... cannot obtain credit under the invariably inflexible, but highly profitable, banking system. The BCA provides a different way for businesses to leverage finance. The borrowers (the security providers) can now use deposit accounts, inventories, machinery, intellectual property, trademarks and the like as security.

Under the BCA, there is no ‘credit limit’. The limit relates to the value of the security in commercial practice. At the moment, the fees for registration of the collateral contract are unknown, as the fees have not yet been published in the Government Gazette. This process should be beneficial to those persons who wish to borrow or lend and would prefer some security which is identifiable and registrable, when the borrower doesn’t have land, or the lender simply cannot take security over land – or does not wish to. Another advantage of the procedure under the BCA is that enforcement of the security is also meant to be faster. It is stated in the BCA and supporting implementing regulations that, in the event of default, a judge must ‘immediately’ arrange for a trial date

Lenders (the security takers) can now register this arrangement at the Business Collateral Registration office. The contract between the borrower and lender is enforceable and binding only after it has been executed and registered.

This is very interesting, as the courts of Thailand are well known to be overloaded with cases at present, thereby making swift justice difficult.

Some knowledgeable readers may wonder how the BCA is different to the previous ‘micro-finance’ and ‘nano-finance’ policies of Thai Government and banks of the past. Under those schemes, borrowers simply didn’t have any security but the limits for borrowing were set at 200,000THB for micro-finance and 100,000THB for nano-finance.

and the proceedings will be conducted continuously until the civil hearing is completed. This is very interesting, as the courts of Thailand are well known to be overloaded with cases at present, thereby making swift justice difficult.

Desmond Hughes

If the BCA achieves what it is meant to, then there will be better opportunities for businesspeople to make arrangements to develop their businesses and for those that are wlling to help to obtain better protection and enforceable security. This would reduce, one might think, the ‘back of an envelope’-style loan agreements that often pass the desks of lawyers.

‘Life on Water’

Scott Bradley

S

cott Bradley of East Marine Asia is a man with a vision. He has a veritable arsenal of spectacular ideas to ensure that his vision continues to push his companies to the forefront of the yachting industry, not only in Phuket but also throughout Southeast Asia. The recent opening of an East Marine Asia branch at Ao Po Grand Marina proves that Scott’s vision is heading in the right direction. Scott has spent his entire life around boats. At the tender age of four, while living on a boat with his father, Scott learned how to sail his first dinghy. By the age of six, he was helping to build boats and in 1988 Scott became a qualified shipwright. Scott first came to Phuket 25 years ago when by chance he met Kanit Yongsakul, the owner of the Boat Lagoon. In those days, the Boat Lagoon was more of a private marina but Scott knew it had the potential to become much more. Khun Kanit approached him and asked just what he wanted to do. The answer was simple: “Build a factory.” So Khun Kanit helped Scott build the factory and in 1997, he opened his own yacht repair facility there. As a long-term expat on Phuket, Scott has seen the island change a lot over the years. He reflects on the sheer number of people that live here now, and how the influx of tourists has continued to help the island grow. Scott fondly remembers a Phuket that most of us have never experienced, “All of those years ago, the roads were so different. They were mostly dirt, and we actually rode dirt bikes to get around.”

At the age of four Scott learned how to sail a dinghy. By the time he was six, he was helping to build boats and in 1988 he became a qualified shipwright. Although Scott realises that Phuket is going through a bit of a slow time, he commends the changes being made to the infrastructure of the island, including how well the new airport is coming along. “It’s easy to complain about how the traffic has been lately, but people need to get over that.” He believes that all of the changes that the island’s going through will benefit his businesses and continue to help them grow. With the new Ao Po Grand Marina branch, Scott’s vision for his company is simple: to encompass everything that’s to do with water. Rebranding with the new motto ‘Life on Water’, Scott hopes more people in Phuket will start to embrace the yachting and water sports lifestyle. Scott is a savvy business man, and he credits the success of his companies to a number of factors: “We’ve got a pretty good reputation for boatbuilding, a reputation that’s spread by word of mouth and indeed in the beginning, we had lots of work from Hong Kong, based on personal recommendation.”

windowonphuket.com

window.phuket

windowonphuket.com

window.phuket

He also has a good team behind him, most of whom have been with him for longer than eight years. His staff members help him to maintain the goal of concentrating on high-quality products and service for their clients. “The main factor behind our growth is that we’ve always looked at really high-end products for East Marine.” A devoted family man, Scott is married and has two young children. He says his wife is an excellent cook, and enjoys Thai food with massaman curry his favourite.

Scott wants to push young Thai people to get them to enjoy sailing and hopes that one day the Royal Thai Navy will support sailing in Phuket as much as they do on the Eastern Seaboard. He’s doing his best to eat healthily these days and to take care of himself, having worked with a lot of toxins in his life, and has turned to a healthier diet in order to ‘keep clean’. Scott says that sometimes staying on track can be hard, especially because his wife is “putting stuff on the table that makes you not want to go out and eat.” Although free time can be rare for Scott, when he does have it, he enjoys relaxing with his wife and children at home. It may have taken 25 years, but in December Scott saw one of his dreams come true as he participated in the 2015 Phuket King’s Cup Regatta on his very own racing yacht which he hopes will continue to be a competitive in the future. Scott wants to push young Thai people to get them to enjoy sailing and hopes that one day the Royal Thai Navy will support sailing in Phuket as much as they do on the Eastern Seaboard. He feels that in order for the sailing lifestyle to gain more momentum in Phuket, Thai nationals need to get involved, whether as crew members or just by being adventurous and going out on a boat. “For Thais, the sailing lifestyle in Phuket could really evolve, and it could also turn into something to give back to the community,” he muses. “Supporting and doing things for the local community is important.” The best advice that Scott offers to those interested in yachting and sailing is to simply get out on a boat and give it a try. “The best boat is always someone else’s,” Scott smiles.

LIVING.RESORT WEAR

Being in style isn’t about showing off one’s wealth or taste anymore. Those who live in the tropics at least partially throughout the year know that the clothes you wear in the heat aren’t just a matter of fashion; everyday attire also needs to be functional and airy. Seasonal styles aside, natural materials like cotton, silk, bamboo fibre and their mixtures – all staple fabrics in resort clothing – provide comfort in high humidity. Even those who don’t consider themselves fashionistas will admit that being comfortable and presentable in high temperatures is a matter worthy of their consideration.

With more and more brands offering pieces that blend comfort and style, choosing the right day and evening attire can be challenging for both sexes. Many ladies get tangled up in picking out matching shorts and tops, bikinis and dresses, nightgowns and sandals, and pairing them with the right jewellery and accessories. A number of gentlemen, on the other hand, feel overwhelmed by bright hues and bold patterns that seem to be a must in current male summer resort wear.

Beach daywear To try and help with this, we’ve prepared some fashion advice and general guidelines based on what’s available in local boutiques. For both sexes, looking good on the island’s whitesand beaches or by turqoise swimming pools begins with the right swimwear – and you won’t go wrong if you look no further than 69 Slam! Once you have the bathing suit of your preference, you’ll want to pick out a rayon shirt or a top that covers arms and shoulders. Men who chose swim briefs would need a pair of longer trunks or beach shorts as well, while those who opt for bright boardshorts can combine them with a dark coloured yet light cotton T-shirt.

I the past, looking good in the tropics In was a statement made only by the rich and w ttrendy. Resort wear was initially marketed by classy brands to wealthy customers able b tto travel to warmer climates during the winter holidays. But so-called resort fashion w is no longer just for lounging around in ssun-soaked destinations; it’s become a yyear-round clothing style that’s all about relaxation, comfort, and – somewhat re surprisingly – an appreciation of nature. su

Regardless of the bikini style a lady likes – and ladies tend to own multiple swimming suits anyway – most will turn a few heads wearing a pair of denim shorts, a knitted beach dress or a simple but bright-coloured dress above knee length. If you’re looking for a bit of summer magic, local boutiques have gorgeous kaftans on offer, from rich-looking single coloured ones to shimmery kaftans in bright shades and with bold prints. As for footwear, the beach look comes down to a single principle: wear a pair of thongs if you’re heading to a sandy destination. Otherwise, opt for strapped open-toe shoes that match your outfit (ladies) or a pair dressy sandals in earth tones (men).

A great look for the fairer sex includes a pencil skirt and a knitted top paired up with flats or wedges. Midi and maxi dresses are also a lovely choice but it’s advisable to take a scarf to cover your shoulders (which is called for while visiting a temple or walking in the sun). You’ll also need sunglasses, a hat and jewellery that complements your outfit; bigger and bolder pieces go well with subdued sand tone combinations, and delicate ornaments match bright and otherwise eye-catching dresses.

Dressing for days when you want to be out and about, visiting attractions or brunching with friends, is the time most tropical wear disasters occur. Even if you apply plenty of sunscreen and plan to stay indoors most of the day, you still want to wear a lightweight attire made of natural fabrics that cover and protect you from the harsh Phuket sun.

Evening wear In Phuket, the sun sets rather early, so refreshing breezes and starlit skies set the scene for exquisite wining and dining in amazing outdoor settings. The cooler temperatures allow for a greater selection when it comes to evening wear, so both the ladies and gents can embellish their looks with light dinner jackets. Most women can’t resist an evening kaftan that flatters almost every figure. Flowing evening frocks are often a bit thicker than those made for daytime

The choice of lightweight pants and dress shorts will appeal to most as well, and lastly for footwear, funky espadrilles or a pair of closed-toe shoes made of breathable materials are a must.

Resort wear collections are a great opportunity for men to step out of their comfort zone by selecting a bold print or a bright playful shirt. Luckily, trends have surpassed leafy botanical prints as the only option and there are truly great colour combinations and styles for every taste. Regardless of whether you have the courage to give a colourful shirt a try or if you prefer to stick to classic designs, Phuket is the place to expand your collection. The choice of lightweight pants and dress shorts will appeal to most as well, and lastly for footwear, funky espadrilles or a pair of closed-toe shoes made of breathable materials are a must.

activies and they normally call for carefully selected, subdued accessories. Futhermore, many of the island’s boutiques offer beautiful and one-of-a-kind feminine silk tops that go well with timeless white pants. Alternatively, make a statement with a shorter dress that’s been embroidered with silver or gold details, and a pair of high-heel sandals. Men showcase their fine taste by choosing perfectly fitted items made of high-quality materials. At nighttime, many choose light-coloured shirts or suits that accentuate their tan. Cooler temperatures also mean that you can play with fabrics and wear a poplin or a silk long-sleeve shirt – or stay true to striking and printed items. Much like seasonal runway fashion, each resort wear collection brings its own styles. For example, 2016 catalogues are introducing a mix of crop tops, skirts, slouchy pants and hoodies, suggesting a modern twist that may not be everyone’s cup of tea. But there are classics that never go out of style, and Phuket is a place where some imagination and fabric awareness makes all the difference between hot and cool.
