Phuket's fame and fortune is founded primarily from its stunning beaches – and they are still the fundamental reason most, if not all, holidaymakers hit this tropical island year after year. But how many are there? Where are they? Which is the most beautiful? Why? On this page, and on Page 12, you'll find most of Phuket's beaches. The number in the blue circle corresponds to the same number on the Page 12 map, making it easy to plan your beach itinerary. We recommend renting a car – and driving carefully!

ADVERTORIAL
A regatta for keelboats and multihulls
One of the truly standout international sporting events in the Southeast Asia region, the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta prepares to set sail once again, swelling Phuket’s visitor numbers and making a large contribution to Thailand’s important tourism industry. Inaugurated in 1987 to celebrate the 60th birthday of His Majesty the King of Thailand, this event has been held every year since, during the first week of December. The Phuket King’s Cup Regatta 2015 will be held off Kata Bay, Phuket, from 5 December to 12 December, with various international racing classes competing. Approximately 150 boats and 1,500+ sailors will compete for one of sailing’s most prestigious trophies. Consisting of five days of racing with challenging, scenic courses held amidst the beautiful Andaman Sea islands, the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta hosts some of the world’s fastest independent racing teams, in addition to its famed prize-giving party series. A big draw for Thai companies and international brands keen to have their presence on a highly visible cosmopolitan platform, the race series and parties are not-to-be-missed events on the Phuket local calendar. The regatta offers sponsorship and media engagement opportunities as well as premium networking opportunities at party venues each night following conclusion of each day’s racing. The region’s largest regatta includes dinghies, keelboats and multihulls amongst its competitive classes, and will feature a ‘sail past’ to celebrate His Majesty the King’s birthday. Competing sailors hail from USA, Australia, England, Russia, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, China and Cyprus, with even wider international representation amongst crew members. CROSSING
Be
efore rampant development and 21st century transit systems changed its face forever, Bangkok was ‘The Venice of the East’, with life revolving around its network of canals. But then Bangkokians fell in love with their cars, turned most of the klongs into roads and largely got rid of a water-based lifestyle – and a superb way of navigating the city. Today, while a far cry from its heyday, Bangkok still boasts a system of public water transport that’s cheap, efficient and fast. And – for adventurous visitors – offers a glimpse of a way of life far-removed from the street-side hurly-burly.
ON THE WATER There’s an off-beat way of getting around Bangkok that offers an experience to remember and a sense of achievement, and has the added bonus of beating the Thai capital’s notorious traffic jams. And there’s an element of excitement too — rare on a public transport system Story by Grenville Fordham — that makes each journey an adventure. Photos by David Found
Travelling by klong is not, however, for the fainthearted. At the smaller jetties, boat drivers swoop in and slam the engine into reverse – causing a great surge in the pier-side water – while passengers clamber from slippery jetties onto the heaving vessel. Surprisingly, it’s rare to see anyone suffer more than a minor indignity in the process.
The drivers are competitive, while the water – contained between concrete embankments – can become surprisingly choppy. Bouncing over the waves, it’s not unusual for the bow wave of a passing boat to drench a whole section of passengers. Then there’s the vicarious pleasure of watching others gingerly getting on and off... But don’t be put off. It CAN be quite safe, and going by klong is a must if you want to experience the unseen side of Bangkok – and avoid the gridlocks which refuse to be tamed by hi-tech mass transit systems. The only route currently operating (on long boats powered by massive V8 diesel engines) runs from Democracy Monument in the west to Ramkamhaeng in the east.

TRAVEL.BANGKOK BY KLONG
TRAVEL.BANGKOK BY KLONG
Most of Bangkok’s tourist attractions are west of Pratunam, but it’s still worthwhile going east. Ask for Wat Mai on New Petchburi Road: your first interim stop – so get ready. You’ll disembark on the left side; signal your intention by standing just after passing Prasan Mitr pier (right) and climb carefully onto the side as Wat Mai draws close. Be ready to jump – the driver might only slow down! Hesitation is the enemy of successful klong travel. Wander through the temple to the road, turn right and look for a tiny passageway clustered with food stalls about 10 minutes away. At the far end is a quaint ‘ferry’ across the klong to Bangkok’s main mosque and a large Muslim community – many living in stilted houses over the klong. If it’s Wednesday there’ll be a thriving market in the square. With its Muslim influences, the food here is different – and delicious.
If you’re at the end of a row it’s your responsibility to work the splash-screens.
Unless you’re unusually agile and adventurous, start at the Pratunam (Thai for ‘watergate’) terminus – and avoid rush-hour! Mid-morning’s ideal. Pratunam pier is located across the road from one of Bangkok’s best-known shopping malls, Central World Plaza. There are two piers – the south pier serves the east, the north pier the west. The system’s easy. You clamber aboard and sit on one of the hard wooden benches, or – if it’s full – stand around the exposed
Be ready to jump – the driver might only slow down! Hesitation is the enemy of successful klong travel.
engine avoiding the spinning fan belts. After departure, an attendant collects fares – still only 10 baht to the western terminus, Panfe pier. If you’re at the end of a row it’s your responsibility to work the splash-screens. En-route to Panfe, you’ll glimpse Jim Thompson’s House. Note where it is; on the return journey you can disembark close by for a 10-minute walk to one of Bangkok’s most famous tourist attractions. This winding section of Klong San Saeb is lined with once-grand timber houses and shops on stilts that afford a rare opportunity to witness how many Bangkokians still live. You’ll see houses tilted at crazy angles – floors sloping up to 30 degrees – yet still occupied; kids swimming in the murky water; small-scale commerce, cooking and domestic chores going on along the raised towpath. Here life is lived outside – indoors is for sleeping. Next, weave your way between the houses and food-stalls to the east out onto the towpath. A gentle five minutes stroll will bring you to a tiny pitch-roofed jetty. Here you catch your ride back – but be warned: this one’s not for the nervous! Most visitors to Bangkok never use the klongs – and miss an adventure that would keep them in after-dinner tales for months! Klong travel needs a touch of ingenuity and a brave heart, though the rewards are well worth the effort. But forget notions of reclining idly in a picturesque long-tail boat, putputting gently along tranquil waterways – you’re on public transport and this is not, after all, Venice!
When you arrive at Panfe, you’re just a short walk from Democracy Monument. Look left and you’ll see the Golden Mount round the corner. A longer walk (or a tuk-tuk ride) will get you to Dusit Zoo, Chitlada Palace, Khao San Road (Banglamphoo), Wat Po, the Grand Palace and others.

Climbers from all over the world come to Krabi to scale these heights. Many beginners also try their hand here.
By Seema Prabhu
Rock climbing poses the ultimate challenge to body and mind: Seema Prabhu scaled the cliffs of Krabi on her first foray into this thrill-seekers sport. Climbers from all over the world come to Krabi to scale these heights. Many beginners also try their hand here, whether they are looking for an adventurous day out, or are more serious about the sport. I was one of those making my debut.
“If people can walk, they mostly can climb,” says Gop, from King Climbers. “It’s natural. When we’re born, we crawl around on all fours first, after all.” But as I stood at the bottom of the sheer, soaring cliff face, craning my neck in disbelief, his words, like my arms, seemed to lose all their power.
The romantic image of a solo learning experience, where I could pretend I was the first person ever to ascend the rock, quickly vanished as I turned the corner to find what resembled a small climbing factory. A whole gaggle of firsttimers like me with their guides were gathered around the base of the cliff.
The monumental rocks in Railay are part of a 30 million year old chain of limestone karsts - stretching from China down to Borneo – and formed from compacted shell and coral. As I squinted into the sunlight, the summit was way out of sight, hidden behind jagged outcrops and the odd solitary tree that had managed to get a hold in the grudging rock.
Some had already started to climb, after coming to terms with an audience watching their every nervous, straining move. Coloured ropes zigzagged along the cliff face and equipment bags littered the ground. The air was ringing with shouts of encouragement and instructions from the guides: “Move your left foot up a bit! Right hand first!” Though how you were supposed to know which instruction was meant for you, I had no clue.
Most people start at the One-Two-Three climbing area on East Railay Beach as it has many relatively easy routes (as well as some fingercrunchingly hard ones) and also it’s the closest to the climbing schools. Ton Sai beach, adjacent to Railay and also popular with climbers, is another good spot to learn. What with all the commotion and the shock of finally being up close to the imposing mass of limestone, it was difficult to take in the techniques of belaying (holding and releasing the rope for the climber), tying knots and making a harness that Wang, my guide, was patiently trying to explain.
Nervousness is part and parcel of the climbing game. “You don’t need to be physically strong to climb,” says Luang from the Hot Rock school, “I’ve seen people with one leg do a great job. It depends more on what’s inside of you, how mentally tough you are. It’s all about fighting your fear.”

The view from the narrow ledge where I rested was thrilling: the full, sweeping expanse of East Railay bay at low tide, the marooned longtail boats basking in the warm afternoon sun. Behind stretched the dense, impenetrable jungle that cuts Railay off from the mainland roads. It doesn’t take a long time to become a competent climber. “After a three-day course, most people should be confident and able enough to lead a beginners’ route,” says Gop. Because you don’t need any special skills, other than the will to climb, Robin – the owner of King’s Climbers – is keen to promote the sport to families: “The message we’re trying to get across is that anyone can climb, young or old. It’s the perfect group activity and kids especially love it.”
Getting there Although Railay is not an island, it’s only accessible from the sea. Longtail boats leave regularly from Krabi Town (100 baht), Ao Nam Mao (50 baht) and Ao Nang (60 baht). For Ton Sai beach, take a longtail boat from Ao Nang (60 baht). Rock climbing is also available on Phi Phi Island in Krabi Province; ferries leave from Krabi Town and Phuket daily. Climbing Schools All the climbing schools offer broadly similar programmes (1/2 day, one day and three day courses), including instructor, insurance, all equipment and refreshments, at similar prices (from 800-5,000 baht). Instructors are not certified (the schools are currently lobbying for the creation of a Thai Climbing Association, which could provide teaching certification), but they’re all experienced climbers of many years and all have training in first aid. Their standard of English is good.
This fear, I soon realised, diminishes greatly if you both understand and trust the few pieces of equipment used. I tried to concentrate on what Wang was telling me. In Krabi, the reasonably safe sport climbing technique is usually used. Sport climbing is a form of roped climbing where metal bolts, placed close together permanently in the rock, are used for protection. With the danger element removed, emphasis can be placed on technique and doing hard moves. If you slip, your harness and rope will arrest the fall after 50 centimetres at the most. The rope is run up to a fixed end point (an ‘anchor bolt’) and back down again, by the guide who climbs first (or ‘leads’). You stay on the ground, pulling and cutting slack on the rope as he climbs and descends, keeping it taut enough to stop any fall (also known as ‘belaying’). This setup is called a top-rope. And once in place, which takes a matter of minutes, you are ready to climb.
True enough, it suddenly seemed to make no difference how many people were around and who was watching. Now it was just me and the cliff face. The ascent, at first easy, quickly becomes hard. Arms tire surprisingly fast but a quick glance down gives you the adrenaline to push your shaking muscles that little bit further. It becomes a sort of primitive challenge: you or the rock – who is going to win? Sheer will, rather than my meagre muscle power, kept me going. Eventually, I made it to the top of the rope, with help from my partner and guide, who allowed me to hang and recover strength before making my final assault.
Dipping furiously into my chalk bag to absorb the moisture from my palms, I was both eager and hesitant to start. “The attraction of climbing for me,” Gop had said, “is that your whole being is concentrated on only two hands and two feet on the rock. Everything else disappears. It’s about self-control and trust.”
Climbers are certainly a mixed crowd, and it’s a friendly scene. During the course of the afternoon, plans were made for drinks that evening. Even the seasoned climbers, who had been loudly talking technical and looking pitifully at the “Ooh, my arms really hurt!” brigade, softened after a while. “Some experienced climbers tend to look down on the beginners, who they think are only doing it because it’s trendy or to take a break from the beach,” says Luang. “But most climbers have a good heart and can remember when they first started. They say ‘welcome to climbing’.” With more than 600 bolted routes graded from F4 (beginners) to F8c (pros, based on the French grading system), there is in any case little need for the two to get in each other’s way. Experienced climbers can just turn up here and get on with it. The climbing schools sell equipment and route books and also provide guides for those that need one. If you’ve come alone, the schools can often put you in touch with a partner; the message board outside Cliffsman Climbing is also a useful resource.
This fear, I soon realised, diminishes greatly if you both understand and trust the few pieces of equipment used.
In order to preserve this climbing paradise, several associations have been formed by the climbing schools. A percentage of their income goes towards the upkeep of the bolts, safety rescue training and environmental clean-ups. They also send Thai climbers to competitions like the Asian X-Games.

The associations’ role is vital in combating occasional negative publicity about climbers damaging the worldfamous cliffs. “From time to time there are moves to stop climbing in Krabi,” says Gop. “But that would be wrong. This is a world-class destination, being managed properly and the people who come here love it.” It’s safe to say that most of the climbers, old and new, who troop back to the bars of Railay each evening, exhausted and happy, would drink to that.

PROPERTY.PHUKET PROPERTY INSIGHTS
ADVERTORIAL
The Emerald Development Group has won the Thailand Property Awards 2015 Emerald Development Group Co., Ltd., led by Mr Sawit Ketroj CEO, has become the leader of Phuket property developers. There are many projects under The Emerald brand in various locations such as Patong, Kalim and Phuket Town, as well as at Ao Nang, Krabi.
and is committed to creating the best quality residences. Emerald is also dedicated to ensuring optimal customer satisfaction when transferring ownership and has always received excellent feedback from clients and partners.
Over the past five years Emerald have had seven projects in total, impressing both foreign and Thai customers with high-quality construction materials and many sales.
The Emerald Development Group was established 100% by Thai people and its main market is foreign customers.
The outlook today for the residential property market in Phuket is solid. One of the most popular locations in Thailand for overseas buyers, Phuket has seen villa and condominium sales growing year-on-year since 2013 and the indicators are that the demand for affordable villas and condos will continue to be strong. The entry level sector consistently proves to be the strongest performer, while the luxury segment is the weakest. However, it should be recognised that the total value of entry level homes sold in any particular year is still less than the total value of luxury sales over the same period! During the first decade of this century, the predominant Phuket property buyers were Europeans, Russians and Australians – with virtually no Thais in the mix. However, there has been increasing demand from Hong Kong and Singapore buyers since 2012. Also since 2012, banks have been far more active in offering mortgageloans, although Thai banks continue to be reluctant to lend to foreigners. However, the increased availability of loans has meant that Thai buyers have become very active in the acquisition of entry-level villas and condominiums. Thai developers, in particular, are acutely aware of this segment and are increasingly designing projects specifically to attract Thai buyers.
At present there is one completed development – Kathu Gold Condominium; one development in the handover process – The Emerald Terrace Condo @ Patong; and five developments under construction – The Emerald Nirvana Residences, The Emerald Central Condo and The Emerald Ao Nang Condo @ Krabi as well as a development located in the heart of Patong named The Emerald City Life Condo @ Patong designed in a modern-classic style.
In 2015, the Emerald Group was nominated at the Thailand Property Awards 2015 for Best Condo Development (Phuket) and Best Boutique Developer (Thailand) under the criteria of design and common areas, location, value for investment, developer background and sales. The event was held at the Plaza Athenee, Bangkok. The Emerald Group was the winner of the ‘Best Condo Development’ (Phuket) category for The Emerald Terrace Condo @ Patong and runner-up in the ‘Best Boutique Developer’ category.
PHUKET PROPERTY INSIGHTS An overview of Phuket’s residential property market – an eclectic mix of residential offerings, ranging from low budget entry-level studio and onebedroom condominiums, from 1-3 million Thai baht through to multi-million-dollar luxury properties.

The outlook for the villa and condominium market will remain positive. Demand will continue strong for affordable condominiums and villas, especially in the entry level and midrange sectors. With regard to condominiums, we have noticed that both the new supply from developers and the market take-up indicate a preference for one-bedroom and studio apartments, with lower buying prices than the more ‘traditional’ two-bedroom offerings. However, it’s worth noting that the majority of buyers looking to acquire a resale condominium continue to show a preference for two-bedroom units. The price per unit of new villa launches in Phuket has fallen and is moving closer to Pattaya prices, which range from 3-9million Thai baht. However, the downward price move disguises an increase in price per square metre; the unit size has been getting smaller as the demand for lower unit prices goes up. Thai publicly listed developers, such as Amari and Sansiri, continue to dominate the entry level sector, offering affordable units that attract the interest of foreign and Thai buyers, while foreign developers appear to be holding onto their dominant position in the mid-level market. Unsurprisingly, the west coast continues to be the most popular location, particularly the northwest coast and Patong. Properties offering sea views, easy beach access and a variety of nearby entertainment options naturally command the highest prices, whilst distance from the airport is an additional value consideration. Buyers looking for a luxury, high-end, property in Phuket will find a plethora of distinguished properties to choose from, whether a condominium, apartment or villa. It’s worth noting that properties in this sector, whilst undeniably available only to those that can afford the price tag, do represent extraordinary value when viewed in world terms. Such properties tend to be tightly held and, whilst new signature properties are occasionally offered, these days, more often than not, only become available as resales – especially so in the villa segment.

ISS Security services ADVERTORIAL
Leader in electronic security system integration
In stock Italian porcelain tiles and the highest quality European certified porcelain tiles from China, providing superior materials for home and office renovations as well as larger commercial, residential and condominium projects.
The need for integration The key systems of security are intrusion detection, access control, and video surveillance. If each of these systems is installed separately, administration and training can burden a company or property owner. Intrusion alarms occur on one system, access badges are administered in a stand-alone database, and intelligent digital video technology runs on dedicated computer equipment. Each system requires service, maintenance, administration, and training. ISS single system enables greater flexibility to add security components that can be easily integrated into the overall system, keeping the cost of capital expenditure low, and requiring little additional training.
With showrooms in Phuket and Bangkok, our boutiques offer compact, unconfused displays, taking the "bazaar" out of the tile showroom and presenting you with an easy reference point for all your floor and wall solutions.
We offer a wide range of solutions to flooring requirements in pricing, whilst maintaining the same high standards of material performance and customer care. LEGAL MATTERS.LEGAL RIGHTS OF PARENTS AND CHILDREN
LEGAL MATTERS.LEGAL RIGHTS OF PARENTS AND CHILDREN
Legal Rights of Parents and Children
T
he diversity of nationalities in Phuket can provide a rewarding tapestry that can be seen in children’s classrooms, on sports fields and in school plays and musicals. Parents lovingly admire and feel proud of their children. I even hear there is a new kids’ club planned not far from my office. Great news all round for Phuketians. However, do parents actually know about some of the rules which apply to their legal relationship and standing with their children? I have heard comments such as, “I can just put that piece of land in my son’s name; he can apply for the building permit.” and the like over the years and in that age-old practice of trying to ‘save legal fees’, mistakes are made. The rules in Thailand do offer some surprises... My father upset me recently by leasing out the front of our house to a noodle seller. I didn’t say he could do that. Can I sue him for misappropriating my property or exploiting it for financial gain? Subject to some exceptions, generally no. Under section 1562 of the Civil and Commercial Code (CCC), no person can enter a civil claim, or institute a criminal case, against his own ascendants, unless that person or a close relative of such person, makes a request – upon which the case can be taken up by the Public Prosecutor.
If I separate or divorce from my wife, can I force maintenance payments for our children’s education?
(4) disposing of the whole or the part of a claim the purpose of which is to create a real right on immoveable property or on mortgageable property.
I believe in ensuring my children go to school, but my wife seems to think that the children can learn at home and is very relaxed about the concept of education. I can’t believe that it is fair on children not to educate them properly. Are there any laws or rules about this in Thailand? If I separate or divorce from my wife, can I force maintenance payments for our children’s education?
(7) making a loan of money.
Yes there are. Under Section 1564 of the CCC, “The parents are bound to look after their children and to provide a proper education for them in the period of their minority.” A mother or a father can be subject to a case regarding maintenance.
Don’t use your children to manage your property interests, without seeking advice on whether you need permission to do so and on how to structure your collective interests. As a parent, what are my obligations and scope of power in terms of managing my children’s property? Under s.1572 of the CCC, parental power includes the management of property of a child but such management has to be exercised with the same care as would be exercised by a person of ‘ordinary prudence’. Would it be OK for me to put some land and buildings in my son’s name, lease it out to some tenants, borrow some money against it from the bank to pay for my wife’s new car and and use the rental income to buy some diamonds for my girlfriend? Only with permission of the Court. Under s.1574 of the CCC “A person exercising parental power cannot enter any of the following juristic act with regard to the property of the minor except with the permission of the Court: (1) selling, exchanging, sale with right of redemption, letting out property on hire-purchase, mortgaging, releasing mortgage to the mortgagor or transferring the right of mortgage on an immoveable property or on mortgageable moveable property.
Desmond Hughes
(5) letting immoveable property for more than three years So in short, don’t use your children to manage your property interests, without seeking advice on whether you need permission to do so and on how to structure your collective interests.
“A person may transfer... a property to a minor, subject to its being managed... by a person other than the person exercising parental power.” If I do transfer property to my child in death or as a gift, are there any other rules which I need to comply with? Under s.1577 CCC, “A person may transfer by legacy or gift a property to a minor, subject to its being managed, up to the time of majority, by a person other than the person exercising parental power. Such manager must be named by the transferor, or in default, by the Court...” So you must choose and appoint a ‘manager’. Not you or a fellow parent. At what stage does a child become responsible and competent and therefore can manage his or her own legal affairs, including property and the other matters which are subject to rules requiring parental input until such time? There is no specific age. Instead the law provides for a Latin language-based test of ‘sui juris’ which means ‘the capacity to manage one’s own affairs’. As this is quite an ambiguous test, anybody relying upon a young person’s legal capacity should first check such capacity and take precautions to ensure that such capacity is verified and would stand the test of any challenge.
window.phuket
If the Court rules that I may not look after my child anymore, do I still have to pay maintenance for the child’s upbringing? I would like to move to another country now my wife obtained custody of my child… Under s.1584 of the CCC, “A person who has been deprived partly or wholly of parental power is not thereby relieved from the duty to furnish maintenance to the minor according to law.” Many parents, divorcing parents and separated partners simply don’t understand the rules relating to being a parent, the scope of rights and duties and nuances of Thai law relating to property and other immoveable assets. Further, many parents don’t understand their legal maintenance obligations in respect of their children and, unfortunately, many fathers and mothers do not have sufficient funds available to assert their rights in law according to what is considered fair and just.
If in any doubt, parental consent should also be obtained and any manager of property should also be involved, even if it is considered that their input might not be any longer necessary. Phuket is truly a place with plentiful shopping and gift options. For an ample selection of everyday products – such as clothes, shoes, accessories or cosmetics – there are malls in Patong, Phuket Town and on major roads throughout the island with huge choices of goods similar to those in international shopping destinations. In prominent department stores, bestsellers and new collections are displayed in bright windows. Buying a fashionable surprise for your significant other, whether it’s a new perfume, a pair of jeans, or a planner will be simple enough; every store has countless sales assistants just waiting to help you get it right.

Giving gifts is as old as humanity itself. Even in primitive caveman culture, it was common as a means of showing affection. Throughout history, gift-giving has been related to expressing appreciation, displaying status symbols, wishing someone good luck or a means to secure personal favours from leaders and sovereigns.
In the USA and Europe, gift exchanges between family members were relatively subdued and simple until the late 19th century – very different from the gift culture our generation is accustomed to. In modern-day society, holiday gift giving often gets associated with consumerism and profit-oriented brands. Regardless of your view on holiday commercialisation, remember that giving, at its core, is about celebrating the

humanity of people around you. When personalised and chosen with the right sentiment, gift-giving can form new, and deepen existing, connections. Do you dread this time of the year because of gift shopping, or do you get excited that you get to show appreciation to those you love? To help you express your feelings in a creative way this holiday season, we’ve checked out what Phuket has to offer and gathered some ideas to help get you started. For something a little more exclusive to Thailand, Phuket has large specialised centres such as textile and silk outlets. Thai silk shops offers endless gift options to choose from at various locations around the island, including silk ties and scarves, bags and wallets, shirts and kimonos, children’s wear as well as beachwear such as wraps and kaftans.

If you’d rather create a memorable moment for your loved one instead of giving them a material possession, Phuket’s a place where you can get very creative. For instance, all ocean lovers enjoy a watersports session, ranging from surfing, paddle-boarding and parasailing to sailing, snorkelling and diving; the best part of this idea is that this is something you can do together. If you’d prefer to stay on the beach but also add a little romance, why not book a romantic beach picnic for two through one of the island’s agencies? 93 A2

For technology lovers, the selection of gadgets available on the island is surprisingly wide and includes well-known international brands as well as a multitude of Asian counterparts that are usually cheaper. Gladden your techie enthusiast with a mobile phone, a tablet, a new camera, or get them a case or an accessory for a device they already have. E-book readers are another ‘in’ option for both genders of every age.

Phuket’s renowned restaurants are another great opportunity for reigniting romance or celebrating together during the holiday season. Take your family to one of the many beachside gems with stunning views and sumptuous meals, or simply gift a dinner reservation. You could also purchase a massage or a daycare package at one of the local spas with seemingly endless choices of Asian-based treatments for the utmost in relaxation. From simple to luxurious beauty parlours, most places will have Thai and oil massages as well as packages for couples. Even if choosing gifts seems challenging at first – particularly if your family is extensive or you have a long list of friends – it’s ultimately rewarding. Most of the time, the value of a gift lies in the details that show your true appreciation for, and understanding of, the receiver; just think about your own all-time gift favourites. Whichever way you choose to show you care this holiday season, don’t forget to garnish it with a handful of inventiveness and a large pinch of cheerfulness.

If more athletic water-based activities are what your family is about, a number of choices – including wakeboarding, cable skiing, wake surfing and knee boarding – are to be found throughout the island. A variety of wakeboard parks and, the latest arrival on the scene, open ocean wakeboarding, will cater to your needs, and it’s good to know that they have instructors for beginners as well as various daily packages.
Phuket is the ultimate tropical holiday destination. Although world renowned for its pristine beaches and vibrant nightlife, the island also offers a wide scope of unique choices for family oriented activities sure to please both children and adults. Whether it’s taking advantage of Phuket’s natural environment, trying your hand in extreme sports, or exploring unusual attractions, Phuket excels in providing something for everyone.
For the bold family seeking extreme adventures, Phuket has a number of exciting choices to satisfy that adrenaline rush, including zip-line and canopy tours through the hillside jungles. Many of these tours are set up as team building eco-adventure activities. High above the trees, you can experience Phuket’s natural scenery firsthand and, if luck is on your side, come face to face with some of the island’s native jungle species of lizards and birds.
Due to Phuket’s ideal location, there are many waterbased activities that can be enjoyed, including swimming, snorkelling, lazing on idyllic beaches, island hopping, and boat trips. You can rent a surfboard at some of Phuket’s west coast beaches during the monsoon season; a few offer surfing lessons as well. Stand-up paddle boards (SUP), sea canoes, and fishing gear are also for hire if you look around. If you’ve had too much of the sand-between-yourtoes experience but still want to soak up the sunshine, Phuket has a gigantic water park in the north of the island that plays host to a variety of wave pools, a ‘lazy river’ and exhilarating waterslides.
The island also offers a wide scope of unique choices for family oriented activities sure to please both children and adults.

Another popular extreme adventure in Phuket is zorbing, the recreational ‘sport’ of rolling down a hill inside a gigantic, transparent, plastic orb. At 190 metres, the course in Phuket is actually the longest in the world. It’s a safe, fun-filled activity for the whole family, guaranteed to bring about laughter and a whole lot of smiles.
Does your family love games? Phuket is a playground for the increasingly popular real-life ‘room escape’ games. Escape games require quick wits and logic, and allow you to keep your mind sharp by utilising your intelligence in a practical manner. Your entire family can be locked in a room for a total of 60 minutes, counting only on each other to find your way out by using in-house clues and hints. As you solve the puzzles, doors to additional rooms open and once the final door opens your family will be set free. These games foster team spirit, and are a fun and interactive way to pass time together during your holiday.

TRAVEL.FAMILY FUN ACTIVITIES IN PHUKET
Behind this attraction stretches a giant maze that will provide hours of entertainment. From the outside, the maze looks relatively simple, but once inside be prepared to be challenged again and again. Truth is, it’s a lot more difficult and a lot bigger than it seems.

One of the quirkiest family attractions in Phuket, and also one of the most popular, is an unusual and intriguing museum that lets visitors become part of the display. Engage and interact with bright, modern 3-D installation art and photo backdrops while being stunned by the optical illusions exhibited. Families can enjoy a creative, stimulating afternoon exploring the museum and posing for photos in, and in front of, the gorgeously painted murals.
Phuket also features some distinctly odd and offbeat attractions, including an upside-down house adjacent to a giant maze. The upside-down house has inverted furniture and décor, allowing for some fantastic and hilarious photo opportunities including ‘dancing on the ceiling’ and other gravity defying poses. Aptly enough, you enter the upside-down house through the roof and directly into the attic! Once your brain comes to terms with the fact that everything in the house is upside down, the fun truly begins. Don’t forget your camera, as this place is sure to leave your family with a lasting holiday memory for years to come.
Phuket’s a rare gem when it comes to family holidays. The island’s beaches are second to none.

For families travelling with young children and toddlers, Phuket’s hotels have well-equipped kids’ clubs serving up an array of interesting activities to keep the little ones entertained. These well-planned kids’ clubs have indoor playgrounds, games, arts and crafts and are even available for private bookings to host a birthday party, or more structured play dates for larger groups of kids.

A wide array of beach clubs dot Phuket Island, hosting a variety of activities including pizza making, surf classes, face painting, Thai cooking class, balloon making and pool games for children. Most beach clubs feature comfortable, spacious restaurants serving up the island’s most delicious cuisine and great coffee and cocktail menus for the adults. A day at any of Phuket’s beach clubs is a real treat for the entire family; the activities are endless and the staff go out of their way to give you the very best experience.
Other museums on the island offer a more historic, cultural look into Phuket. The island’s rich history provides the perfect backdrop for an educational outing highlighting the influx of Chinese immigrants, the tin-mining days, the indigenous sea gypsy clans and a colourful look into Phuket’s ‘Baba’ heritage. Speaking of which, a wander through Phuket’s ‘old town’ is an attraction in itself.

PEOPLE.PHILIPP GRAF VON HARDENBERG
“Nowadays many believe that success and happiness have to do with accumulating material wealth. But there’s a very true American saying; ‘you can only eat one steak a day, so why have 20 in your fridge?’” – says Philipp Graf von Hardenberg, Thanyapura Phuket President & CEO and the founder of Children’s World Academy Foundation.

Philanthropist by trade:
Philipp Graf von Hardenberg
P
hilipp Graf von Hardenberg is a man with a big last name and an even bigger reputation due to his restless engagement in humanitarian causes. He was recently named one of Forbes Asia’s 40 ‘Heroes of Philanthropy’ for having established the Yaowawit School and Lodge for underprivileged children in Phang Nga, Thailand. Yet he appears to be down to earth – a trait that probably contributes to his success. Philipp came to Phuket right after the tsunami in 2004. His trip to Thailand had been booked prior to the disaster as he was going to help a friend run a small orphanage north of Chiang Mai. He was supposed to assist with fund raising activities and even bring his two daughters to volunteer at the orphanage. However, he ended up in Phuket after only one day in Chiang Mai. Six weeks later he found a piece of land where he then built a boarding school for local children who’d lost their parents or were otherwise underprivileged. Today, the school and orphanage accommodates 126 children aged 4 -14 years old. Although Philipp didn’t move to Phuket permanently until 2014, he travelled to Thailand on a yearly basis and considers the school as close as his own family. He finds that having a family and a fulfilling profession, along with helping the socially disadvantaged, are the most important things in life. He believes that success is happiness and that fulfillment comes through balance.
Philipp came to Phuket right after the tsunami in 2004. His trip to Thailand had been booked prior to the disaster as he was going to help a friend run a small orphanage north of Chiang Mai. Talking about his family and children, Philipp says he finds something inherently wrong with the way we speak about children, calling them ‘ours’ as if they were property. They’re their own people and we can’t and shouldn’t try to decide their life and destiny, he believes. He’s been married for 29 years and considers equal partnership in a relationship most important. He says it’s crucial that we make decisions together as much as possible, even if it isn’t always easy. He relates that the previous weekend spent with his wife was one of his happiest; they’d told their kids that they were away from Phuket, while in reality they stayed home reading books and just enjoying each other’s company.

Asked about his life in Phuket and Thailand, Philipp replies that Phuket’s a wonderful place to live as long as you get away every once in a while. He misses a rich cultural life, so he takes any opportunity to play catch-up when he goes away. But the usual complaints about Phuket, such as the traffic for instance, seem trivial to him as they’re common wherever you go. Sharing his view on Thailand, he says it’s important to remember that we’re guests here and that we need to learn the local way of doing things. He took time to learn about Thai culture and Buddhism when he initially came here, and he believes that we all have a chance to blend our own experiences with the culture we’re immersed in.
Asked about his life in Phuket and Thailand, Philipp replies that Phuket’s a wonderful place to live as long as you get away every once in a while. He also believes that we’re all equal and in every team; each member has an immense contribution. As an example, when Philipp was originally introduced to the staff as Thanyapura’s CEO, he asked all the dishwashers to stand up. Then he asked his employees: “On a night when all our capacities are full, who’s more important – people who wash the dishes or the CEO?” “Without each member’s valuable contribution, we have nothing,” he says. He believes that, “Everybody should find a working environment in which they can bloom and be happy,” and that it’s happiness that gives us balance in life. Self-confidence is very important to enjoying success in life and Philipp feels we should be teaching kids to be confident and curious; these traits are important in his school’s curriculum. He adds that he continually encourages his employees to be open with him: “If my employees aren’t brave enough to tell me where I’m right or where I’m wrong, how can I continue learning?” If you would like to learn more about, or to support, the Yaowawit School and Lodge, go to www.yaowawit.org
