‘Champion sailor and captain of industry’

W
e meet at the beachside setting of the Phuket Yacht Club, with stunning views over Chalong Bay. Home from home for Scott Duncanson. Why? Scott is a household name among the local sailing fraternity. Not only is he Commodore of the Phuket Yacht Club (formerly ACYC), but a dedicated racer who has just returned from winning the prestigious Coronation Cup at Jomtien Pattaya, one of four annual regattas which make up the Platu 25 One Design Championship.. Scott talks enthusiastically about Thailand’s largest fleet of one-design keel boats. Designed by New Zealander Bruce Farr specifically for Thai weather conditions, it is a mono-hulled, 7.5 metre design named after a famous Thai fish, Pla-Tu. In the course of the Pattaya regatta, helmsman Scott and his four crew defeated teams from Japan, Russia, United Kingdom, Singapore, Malaysia and the highly fancied Easy-Tiger team from Sydney, Australia. A sweet victory. Incidentally he is the only skipper to have won this event back-to-back and this 2016 victory made it a history-making three-peat in his boat Kingdom Property. Asked about his number of triumphs in sailing events, Scott modestly declined to remember… They are many. His prowess as a sailor is legendary. He describes his most recent triumph in the following terms:“Winning a one design regatta such as the Coronation Cup stirs up different emotions, especially after all the hard work in creating a programme to attract sponsors, countless hours of boat preparation, forming a crew, training, tuning and racing… As you cross the finish line there’s a huge relief of pressure and stress, then there’s the blurred celebration with the crew and competitors at the presentation ceremony and finally … then realisation that we did actually win.”
He is the only skipper to have won this event backto-back and this 2016 victory made it a historymaking three-peat in his boat Kingdom Property He is passionate about other, equally worthwhile things. As befits a leading security expert, Scott – ironically talking while his fiveyear-old is absorbed in a smart phone game – is deeply concerned about the dangers of the media revolution. While useful as a business tool, there are huge security risks. Social media makes its users vulnerable, not just to the prying eyes of Thai authorities, but to exploitation by unscrupulous, unseen agencies and criminals. Hence his distrust of Facebook. Scott wistfully observes, safety and security is not a priority for most Thais. Scott’s concern for ecological matters is equally heartfelt. He lives with his wife Cattaleeya and two boys, Ryan aged five and Zac aged eight in Parlai, very close to the new dolphinarium. He thoroughly disapproves of the venture. And while he is aware that in some respects, Phuket has made positive strides –“When I first came it was tough buy a loaf of nice bread or get a decent cup of coffee” – he agrees that so called “development” on the island has been too haphazard and to the detriment of the environment . windowonphuket.com

It is hard to imagine Scott doing anything by halves. His obvious success as a business executive mirrors his winning ways as a yachtsman. With an Australian background and experience in innovative areas such as Computer Aided Design (CAD), Scott’s budding interest in matters maritime led to his morphing into a shipwright designing and building boats. Leaving Adelaide for Thailand in 1991, and working for four years in the then fledgling marine industry, Scott has worked for three different international security companies, the most recent being the over-hundred-yearold Danish company, ISS Facility Services, where he now fills the role of General Manager, Aviation and Southern Thailand. ISS is a massive enterprise operating in 77 countries worldwide, with more than half a million workers, including 35,000 in Thailand alone.
With an Australian background and experience in innovative areas such as Computer Aided Design (CAD), Scott’s budding interest in matters maritime led to his morphing into a shipwright designing and building boats. In the company’s Southern Thailand region, which consists almost exclusively of Thai personnel – 1,000 of them – much of his time is spent communicating with his large team of sub managers. Developing operating procedures and raising service quality standards are always high on the agenda. If you will pardon the pun, it is not all plain sailing. He bemoans the fact that good workers are difficult to recruit and that site level turnover is a staggering eight percent per month and labour shortages are a fact of life. Nonetheless, ISS Facilities Services, which specialises in aviation, commercial security and support services at Suvarnabhumi, Phuket and Chang Mai airports has an enviable track record, both globally and locally, filling the Number One spot in the International Association of Outsourcing Professionals (IAOP) awards 2013-15. Scott is now 50 but looks, behind the shades, and even after a hard day’s night on the red wine, much younger., He is obviously in great physical shape. But he anticipates the day when he will spend less time racing, and more time helping to develop the sport among young people and especially his children. He enjoys teaching and passing on his expertise. A friend, Duncan Worthington , recently opined that not enough was being done in Phuket at grass roots level. Scott agrees, saying that he would like to change the stereotype of sailing as an activity dominated by “rich old codgers”. How nice, he mused, it would be to sit here and watch the sailing with your young family, or even better to watch them actually participating. Scott’s oldest, Zac, is not only a fine swimmer, but is already ‘messing about in boats’. If Scott has a hand in such developments, they will surely happen. With its spirit-possessed mediums performing shocking acts of self-flagellation, the Phuket Vegetarian Festival is a colourful spectacle that’s become famous around the world. But a month before the Veg Fest is a more gentle, less well-known yet no less important, event for the island’s Hokkien Chinese community: the Por Tor Festival. The Por Tor Festival has a long, rich tradition in Phuket and similar festivals are held throughout Southeast Asia, China and Japan. Known also as the Hungry Ghost Festival, it starts on the first day of the waxing moon on the seventh lunar month of the Chinese calendar. During this month it’s believed that the gates of hell are opened, allowing ghosts trapped inside to return to earth to enjoy feasts prepared by their living relatives. It’s also a time to help those who may be wandering lost in a deathly realm: the forlorn spirits of those who died suddenly or died away from family, or otherwise missed the chance for a proper send-off.

The festival’s first day is typically spent at the family home, where an elaborate feast is prepared. The table is set with all the dishes placed in the middle, plus a plate of rice for each of the departed relatives. Sticks of incense speared into each serving of rice are lit, then all the family members sit off to the side or go to another room. When the incense is burned through, it indicates the ghosts have finished dining, allowing the living relatives to come to the table to start their meal. Feeding their forsaken dead relatives gives the living a chance to show respect to their ancestors. Preparing meals and making offerings at the Chinese temples are acts of loving kindness and mercy, giving shelter and sustenance for suffering, starving spirits. The name of the festival in Phuket originates from the Chinese god Por Tor, who is the king of hell. He’s the gatekeeper and judge to whom the recently departed must make their case in their quest to reach heaven.
At the Por Tor Gong shrine near Saphan Hin in Phuket Town, temple walls are lined with murals depicting this entrance to hell, as well as gruesome scenes of the punishments Por Tor metes out to hell-bound spirits. Every Chinese shrine around Phuket stages ceremonial offering events, but the Por Tor shrine is the main one since it’s dedicated to the Por Tor god.
Local historian Khun Chaya NaTakuathung, who offers culture tours with Phuket Heritage Trails, says some believe the inclusion of turtles in the festival originated from early Hokkien migrants to Phuket, who had a difficult passage by sea from the Fujian region of China.
Red turtle cakes, called ‘ang ku’ in the Hokkien dialect, are the most vivid offerings prepared for the festival, and Phuket is the only known place where such turtles play a ceremonial role.
The journey reminded the migrants of a story in Buddhist legend about a Chinese Taoist monk who made a journey to India to learn more about the Buddhist teachings that were spreading across the region. While at sea a storm swept up. The monk began to pray and a huge turtle rose up out of the sea. Some believe the turtle led the ship to shore while another story tells about how the turtle lifted the ship on its back and carried it to safety.
The turtles, which represent longevity, are made with glutinous rice flour and decorated with a fondant icing. The colour red is chosen for good luck, success and wealth, while some turtles are white for purity and others are yellow to represent high status and royalty. Phrases like ‘good luck’ or ‘good health’ are inscribed on the cake as well as name of the person, family or business making the offering. Several shops around Phuket Town specialise in making the turtles and some order very large and elaborate turtles, costing 50,000 baht or more.
In addition to the turtle cakes, an abundance of food dishes are proffered for the famished lost souls. The temples are brimming with bags of rice, whole roasted ducks, pork and chicken, piles of fresh fruit and vegetables. Even whiskey and wine cooler bottles are on offer, keeping things festive. Despite the seemingly dark themes of death and hell, the Por Tor festival is a lively, family-oriented event. Not only is it a feast for the ghosts, but a fascinating feast for the senses offering a peek inside Phuket Hokkien culture, perhaps in more accessible and palatable ways than the better-known Vegetarian Festival.

Method: Tom yam: Place stock, herbs and chilli paste in a saucepan and bring to boil. Add lobster shell and season with salt and fish sauce. Add mushrooms and tomatoes and finish with cream and lemon juice. Phad med: Place the wok on heat and add oil. The food trucks scattered across the island are convenient and serve their fare up quickly – ideal for those who are super-hungry or workers who have limited time to dash out for a lunch break. They’re also on the scene late in the evening, which quite literally makes for a great midnight snack.
In the heart of Phuket Town, there’s a unique food truck serving up Korean fried chicken in a tiny courtyard that houses a full-on restaurant of the same nature behind it. The chicken is crispy, delicious and well worth a try. Further south, Chalong has a popular sushi truck that’s hard to miss as it’s decorated with Japanese samurai flags and almost always has a crowd around it. Most nights, the sushi truck is parked on Chaofa East Road, just north of Chalong Circle.

Then there’s a food truck that parks on Soi Saiyuan on the way to Nai Harn Beach every afternoon until late evening. They love meeting new customers and always have a big smile for returning ones. One fantastic fact about this food truck is that the girls are open to suggestions as to what to serve, foodwise. If the facilities in the truck allow them to make any requested or suggested dish, these girls will certainly try.
Patong plays host to a very hip burger truck with a modern feel to it; you’ll find it parked on Bangla Road until the wee hours of the morning. The staff members are young and friendly, serving a variety of beef and chicken burgers with French fries and onion rings. Take our advice and try to get there as soon as they open as there always seems to be a queue and the wait for a burger can be up to 20 minutes.

Yet with Khao Sok National Park right on Phuket’s doorstep, it doesn’t have to be like that – it’s actually possible to sunbathe on Phuket’s lovely beaches in the morning and find yourself in the almost untouched wilderness of Khao Sok in the afternoon. And getting to Khao Sok is easy: Most tour operators can arrange transport and, with local roads in good condition (in the dry season), renting a car and driving yourself is also an option. The latter also gives you the opportunity to explore the national park on your own once you get there.

The lake is surrounded by verdant and thick jungle and parts of it have become popular photographic spots due to the huge blocks of limestone karst jutting out of the water, forming majestic islands.
A network of smaller or larger trails snake their way through the park and, if you’re lucky (and stay quiet), you might be able to see some of the park’s rare wildlife. There is a 300-baht entry fee which comes with a detailed map of the park. If you’re not comfortable with roaming around on your own, guided tours can also be arranged at the park entrance. Covering more than 700sqkm, Khao Sok National Park is a nature-lover’s paradise. It’s covered by one of the oldest evergreen forests in the world – believed to be over 160 million years old – complemented by huge limestone mountains that rise up here and there, dramatic waterfalls, inviting and cooling swimming holes, deep lakes and mysterious caves. Phuket’s eclectic sister city A young traveller chases pigeons across Chinese shrine grounds near the junction for Little India.
Located in the Strait of Malacca, just off of Malaysia’s northwest coast, Penang’s strategic setting saw it become a thriving destination for traders travelling to Asia from Europe and, further afield, from the Middle East. Nowadays the island’s population has grown to 1.6 million and Penang still retains its role in the region as a melting pot of colonial architecture with delicious food, plenty of beaches and a rustic, almost vintage, urban style. In September 2014, Phuket and Penang became sister cities. The decision was based on their historical parallels of Chinese immigration, rubber tree plantations and tin mines, as well as both housing a variety of interesting Sino-Portuguese shop-house buildings. Recently, Phuket was recognised by UNESCO as one of their ‘Cities of Gastronomy’ and, coincidentally, Penang’s George

Penang is a veritable explosion of cultures; everywhere you look there are Chinese, Malay, Dutch, Indian, British and Portuguese influences; this is truly an island that functions on sensory overload. The streets are filled with hustle and bustle and around every corner there’s a Chinese shrine or Hindu temple with the familiar smell of incense wafting out.
Penang has become well known for its delicious and affordable street food, too. The UNESCO World Heritage Site centre of George Town has become a hotspot for local food tours and a haven for international food bloggers eating their way around the island.
The small lanes and alleyways of Penang come alive in the morning and maintain their momentum throughout the day; vendors sell everything from steamed buns and old-style black tea to rolled tobacco and Chinese herbal medicines and elixirs. There are flower vendors on every corner, fresh markets displaying exotic fruits and vegetables to wander through, a temple to visit or a coffee shop to settle down in with a good book and a cup of strong, local coffee.

There is a large variety of hawker stalls in Penang selling Chinese, Malay and Indian delights such as noodle soups, curried prawns, as well as dosas, samosas and fried bananas. Penang is also famous for its Peranakan cuisine, which is a fusion of Chinese and Malay flavours. The food in Penang is fantastic. There is a whole lot of bang for your buck so it’s best to try a bit of everything.

Penang boasts some excellent sightseeing destinations scattered across the island and it should be noted that most taxi drivers are happy to take you to the various spots of interest for a reasonable fare. One of Penang’s most scenic spots lies just outside of George Town, and is known as Penang Hill. The summit is 821m and it commands a panoramic view of the island. The air is cool and the vegetation lush and green atop Penang Hill, making it one of the most visited viewpoint destinations in the region.

Malay fisherman, and are a throwback to Penang’s yesteryears. Interesting steel sculptures reiterate the oral history of Penang in a very clever manner, and if you are brave enough to wander the city and find them all you will have a newfound understanding of just how eclectic the history of Penang really is. Another interesting place to visit that showcases the island’s history is the Clan Jetties, the most developed of which is Chew Jetty – a commercial hub with restaurants, shops selling souvenirs and even a modest homestay. The Clan Jetties were, and still are, home to the original Chinese families that settled in Penang, of which there are about 20 remaining. This colonial island offers much in the way of beaches, nature, upscale restaurants and shopping, but if it’s a bit of history and culture that you seek, then head to George Town. Here you’ll find authentic street cuisine from a mish-mash of cultures, interesting Chinese shrines and Hindu temples, charming old SinoPortuguese shophouses and a real vintage feel. Penang sets a refreshing change of pace, and is well worth exploring for a few days.
Getting There Firefly offers direct flights from Phuket to Penang every Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The flight leaves Phuket at 3:20pm and arrives in Penang at 5:35pm. Penang is an eclectic mix of charming shophouses and fabulous street art.

Although, these measures create some awareness amongst the wider population, there is still a great deal of work to be done to create a greater sense of environmental responsibility. It may be the case that similar litter prevention measures may become the norm in other parts of the country, such as in Phuket, if individuals do not start to recognise their joint responsibility for protecting their local environment.

Burning Trash Another significant environmental issue is of the burning of household waste, which is common across rural areas and in local communities of Phuket. Burning trash significantly worsens air pollution around us, and unreasonably interferes with an individual’s enjoyment of their property and life.
But, whilst it is easy to get caught up with the beauty and serenity of the island, we must recognise that Phuket has a growing waste problem. As a resident or tourist, it is important to be aware of, and respect, Thailand’s waste-related laws. In comparison to violation of Thailand’s drinking and drug laws, which are always prioritised under a tourist’s or foreign resident’s ‘DON’T DO IT’ list, laws concerning littering and waste are often overlooked and unfortunately taken for granted.
This area of environmental concern is perhaps given less importance than littering and illegal dumping, which are widely evident in public places. However, it must be acknowledged that burning waste has severe implications on the wider ‘public health’ and may also result in catastrophic risks to the life or property of another.
Illegal Dumping A key environmental issue which is taken lightly is the illegal dumping of waste, not only by corporations but also individuals. According to Navigation in Thai Waterways Act (volume 14) (last amended in 1992), dumping of any refuse/waste (including oil and chemicals) into a river, canal, lagoon, reservoir or lake which is used as a public passage, and which may pollute the environment or disrupt navigation in Thai waterways, is prohibited. Any person who breaches this law, will be punished by imprisonment not exceeding six months or by a fine not exceeding 10,000 baht, or both. In addition, according to S.380 of the Criminal Code, anyone who causes contamination of any well, pond or reservoir which is reserved for the public will be subject to imprisonment for not more than one month, or can be fined up to 1,000 baht or both.

Throwing Litter It must be accepted that littering is a serious and growing problem in Thailand; even more so, it is becoming evident across many of the country’s coastal areas. It is important to understand the rules and regulations concerning littering in Thailand, as the implications of such acts can often be easily dismissed. Environmental regulations are issued under various laws, such as
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration created its ‘litter police’ (in Thai referred to as ‘thetsakji’) who are authorised to inspect and penalise (via fines up to no more than 2,000 baht) any person found throwing litter on the streets, in particular cigarette stubs. Cleanliness and Orderliness Act BE 2535 (1992) which prohibits the discharge of waste in public places. Furthermore, Section 20(1) of the Public Health Act, authorises local governments with powers to prohibit the discharge, emptying and leaving of waste or sewage to exist in a public place. In addition to regulations concerning littering, there have been government enforcement measures introduced to further curb the growing litter problem in the country. Bangkok is a good example of this. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration created its ‘litter police’ (in Thai referred to as ‘thetsakji’) who are authorised to inspect and penalise (via fines up to no more than 2,000 baht) any person found throwing litter on the streets, in particular cigarette stubs.
Burning trash may well trigger criminal liability for arson due to unforeseen consequences, such as causing injury to another. According to Section 220 of the Criminal Code, whoever sets fire to any material which may belong to himself and thereby causes injury to the another person or to a thing belonging to the other person, will be punished by imprisonment not exceeding seven years and may be also fined around 14,000 baht, or both.
Conclusion Despite clear rules and regulations concerning waste and environmental protection, Thailand faces a serious problem in controlling the amount of increasing waste on its land. For Phuket to maintain its global appeal of a leading holiday destination and attractive investment hub for the hospitality sector, further waste management and control measures may need to be enforced to preserve its reputation. This is not only the responsibility of the government but also requires the joint efforts of residents and tourists, who should be aware of the need to act responsibly and, ideally, should have some knowledge of waste-related laws.

oji Nishizawa from Japan won the 2016 Laguna Phuket men’s 42km marathon, finishing in 02:37:53 while the Philippines’ Lany Cardona won the women’s division in 03:23:00.
The UK’s Neil Pearson finished second in the men’s marathon in 02:47:16h followed by Mario Maglinao coming in at 02:49:54, breaking 2015 record. In the women’s marathon, Thailand’s Wilaiwan Kumpituk came in at 03:24:33 and Xiomara Templeton, from the USA, placed third in 03:31:10. The Philippines dominated the 21km half marathon races, taking four of the top six spots. The winner of the men’s race was Richard Salano, who finished in 01:15:18, followed by Australia’s Chris Truscott in 01:16:56 and Gregg Vincent Osorio. In the women’s half marathon Singapore’s Vivian Tang won in 01:27:11 while defending women’s champ Christabel Martes from the Philippines followed in 01:28:13 and Jho-An Banayag, also from the Philippines, placed third in 01:29:17.

The Laguna Phuket Marathon is a family-oriented marathon, offering everyone a chance to participate in the races. The 2017 Laguna Phuket Marathon will be held June 3-4, 2017. Registration for the 2017 event with super early bird entry fees is open on either of the two websites listed at the end of this article. More information about the Laguna Phuket Marathon is also available at +66 2 236-2931-2.
Thai runners ruled the 10.5km half marathon that took place on June 4 with Rattakarn Lamanee winning the 10.5 km men’s race in 00:37:56 and Wilaiwam Kumpituk winning the women’s race, finishing in 00:41:49. Also participating in the 10.5km run was Babu Seenappa, running wunderkind and youth advocate for children living with HIV/AIDS. Babu finished the 10.5km run in 00:51:55.

This year was also the first time that the races took place over two days. The 2km Kids’ Run, 5km Run & Walk, and 10.5km Run took place near sunset on Saturday 4 June, while the half marathon and marathon runners had an early start on Sunday morning.
Overall, the 2016 Laguna Phuket Marathon attracted over 6,000 participants from 54 countries, making this year the first time the event has broken the 6,000 entry mark, as well as setting new records for entries in each race distance.

The clear waters that grace Phuket’s coasts entice travellers, as well as locals and expats, as the water is warm all year round. However, from May until October it’s extremely important to exercise caution on Phuket’s west coast beaches; this time of year is known as the southest monsoon season. The monsoon brings a lot of rain, stirs up dangerous creatures such as jellyfish and stonefish, and also produces rough seas and high waves, as well as extremely dangerous rip currents.

Know how to swim It’s also important that you know how to swim. If you don’t, please refrain from getting into the water. Swimming in the sea is far different than swimming in a pool, and the ocean floor is not flat and can often change quickly and drastically. If you want to get in the water but can’t swim, wear a lifejacket and stay in the shallows.

Lifeguards are aware of their beach surroundings and conditions much more than holidaymakers. If you’re playing in the surf, or choose to swim when the lifeguards say it’s safe, please make sure you keep them in your sights at all times.
Heed warning flags
Be aware of rip currents
During this season there are often yellow and red flags placed on the beaches. If you’d like to swim, it’s best to speak to a lifeguard before going in the water. If there is no lifeguard present, use your very best judgement.
Rip currents are caused when waves break away from the shore and cause a strong circulation in the water that results in what we know as a rip current.
Red flags are warning signs advising beachgoers not to enter the water. Yellow flags indicate moderate currents and surf, warning that the water is rough and dangerous.
Check the weather It’s important to remember that storms and the beach do not mix. Check the weather before heading to the beach. If it’s a stormy day, use the time as an opportunity to explore some of Phuket’s other tourist attractions. Remember, the weather during the

If you get pulled out by a rip current, the most important thing to remember is to remain calm. Let the current carry you for a while and save your energy. Don’t try to swim against the current, instead gain your composure and start swimming horizontal to the shore. Ton Sai and Bang Pae Waterfalls Located in the Khao Phra Thaeo National Park, these waterfalls, at 18 metres high, are the tallest on the island. Phuket Botanic Garden Phuket Botanic Garden should be on your list of attractions to visit while in Phuket! The garden is in the Chalong area not far from Chalong Temple and features an amazing horticultural display split into 30 zones, each containing different species.
