THE 'FUN REGATTA' ONLY GETS BETTER!
Despite rumours that it wouldn't happen, Ao Chalong Yacht Club (ACYC) stepped in and organised a successful event that moved 300 people around Phang Nga Bay Held from February 9 to 13, The 14th Bay Regatta has once again been hailed as the 'FUN Regatta'. An astounding sailing route and anchorages leaving from Phuket through majestic Phang Nga Bay to Krabi and back to Phuket, with five nights of prize giving presentations and parties, have combined to make this a memorable on Asia's yachting circuit. Impressive course designs through the stunning scenery of Phang Nga Bay and the provinces of Phuket, Phang Nga and Krabi, in addition to great parties, led to this year’s Bay Regatta being hailed as the best yet.
Praises of the event are many... “Enough can’t be said about the fantastic efforts of the Ao Chalong Yacht Club and The Bay Regatta organising committee. They've staged a truly unique and magnificent regatta amongst some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. The party venues were awesome, 5 star food and beverage each night, sleep ashore, sleep on a yacht, the choice was yours. It just doesn’t get much better than this.” Scott Duncanson, Quantum Fusion M, winner of Racing Class
"We would like to convey our thanks for a fantastic regatta, definitely the best Bay Regatta in the 14 years of the event. The opportunity to sail some of the world’s most beautiful sailing areas was again fantastic, the competition was very strong and the parties were needless to say amazing. Count us in for next year hopefully with Simba sailing." Paul Kendall, Sunsail Lychee, winner of Bareboat Charter Class. (Paul Kendall is Rear Commodore of the Changi Sailing Club.)
The London Corinthian Sailing Club chartered four boats - Venture, Kinnon, Villon and Rachawadee - and have sailed in many other regattas but this was their first experience of The Bay Regatta and they found it to be much more fun! Says London Corinthian's Steven Gear-Evans, Venture, second in Bareboat Charter Class, "This was the most stunning race course we've ever been on. We'll definitely be back!"
"This has been the best Bay Regatta ever!" Kevin Perrins, Rusalka, fourth in Cruising B Class

"This was my 5th [Phang Nga] Bay regatta, and each year I bring new friends along who have a great time. I think you pitched it just right in terms of venues, and it was nice to see the Ao Chalong Yacht Club hosting the final night so well. I hope you will be organising it again for many years." George Eddings, The Frog, fourth in Multihull Class
Day 1 saw the Regatta racing in Phang Nga Bay off the east coast of Phuket, with the party/prizegiving held at The Village Coconut Island (Koh Maphrao), also the venue for the previous night's opening party. Day 2 followed a course to the anchorage at The Paradise Koh Yao Boutique Resort and Spa. Particularly scenic surroundings took the fleet next day to Krabi at the Sheraton and then, on the last day, off to a more stimulating sail to the southeast point of Koh Yao Yai. The final party was held by the Ao Chalong Yacht Club (ACYC). Although low winds plagued the first two days, resulting in shortened courses for most classes, the last two days provided some terrific sailing with a particularly invigorating sail back from Krabi. In Racing class, Phuket local Scott Duncanson, owner and skipper of Quantum Fusion M took first while in Bareboat Charter, it was Paul Kendall on Lychee who took top spot on the podium. Neils Degenkolw’s Phoenix won first in Cruising A and in Cruising B, Jim Ellis’s Remington, a participant and winner since the first rally in 1998, took first. Multihulls saw first time Regatta participant Sidewinder, owned by Alan Carwadine taking honours. The first-ever Phang Nga Bay Regatta trophy from the 1998 event organised by Ao Chalong Yacht Club
Despite rumours that the event wouldn't happen, the Ao Chalong Yacht
Club (ACYC) stepped in at short notice and organised a successful event that moved approximately 300 people around Phang Nga Bay, from one 5-star resort to another. Fantastic food, great entertainment (DJ Jay Le Shark at The Coconut Village Island and a band), and bands at The Paradise Koh Yao Boutique Resort and Spa and at the Sheraton Krabi Resort and – for the first time – a full range of free flow drinks all included in the crew ticket. The final party at ACYC saw outstanding food and drinks with two bands. The Bay Regatta is a non-profit event. Thanks to the support of sponsorship, the Regatta can continue to provide varied and interesting race courses through some of the most breathtaking maritime scenery in the world to reach unparalleled anchorages and party venues – all factors which contribute to this exciting event that sees participants returning each year. To all participants, sponsors, organisers and supporters of this year's event, thank you for making the Regatta a success. See you on the water next year!

The Norweigan Rockers - The Prodigal Sons
Another glorious weekend of great music under the stars! Raindrops had been in the air and the skies were partly cloudy Friday evening, February 25 when the sun went down and the lights came up and the 6th annual Phuket International Blues Rock Festival took off. But the stars came out for the Phuket All Star Blues Band. The Colin Hill Band, joined by blues shouter Jimmy Fame, were followed by the Rockin’ Angels featuring Latino bassist extraordinaire Andy Gonzalez. Next, Robb Davies & Tony ‘Chainsaw’ Wilson brought their latest version of the Groove Doctors to the party and were joined by George Cordeiro. The spectacular guitar talents of Colin Hill, ‘Singapore Patt’, Robb Davies and George Cordeiro were combined on a raging version of Rockin’ in The Free World. Coming together from every corner of the globe, this all-star congregation made everyone who calls this beautiful island home justly proud. This reviewer was very fortunate to see Cream in 1967 at the Café Wha? in Greenwich Village. My ears are still ringing from that incredible performance in a club the size of our little local Jammin’ Café. How lucky we were to have Rich Harper and his Cream band Disraeli Gears. Clean, crisp and super tight with music and vocals spot on, this is the closest you’re ever going to get to the real thing – in their heyday. Bravo!
MCs Marc Mulloy and Ricky Zen
Rock legend Mason Ruffner followed with his unique style of New Orleans syncopated rhythm that got everybody on their feet. Mason’s years of experience performing and touring with the likes of Bob Dylan, Santana and
more, was clearly evident as he gave a flawless performance that included the original Runnin – which is so hypnotic that it's virtually impossible to get it out of your head. Not only is Mason a gifted singer-songwriter but he's an amazing electric guitarist to boot!

7-piece Malaysian band AkashA went on to entrance the crowd with their beautiful, extremely unusual world fusion music. The crowd pressed the stage and swayed in time to the melodies. They blended percussion, guitar, sitar and other traditional instruments to playing samba, blues, jazz – you name it. It was impossible to stay still as the rhythms wafted through the night. The audience refused to let them go, but after two encores it was very late.

Aspiring Blues singer
A great start to a great weekend of music, and not a single drop of rain to spoil the non stop-fun! Saturday began with Jim Paxton & Stuart Bush who did a great acoustic set of standards and originals. The Torgny Sandgren Blues Band, or simply ‘The Swedes’, played brilliant, high-energy blues rock – all sung in SWEDISH! These young guys rocked the house and though I don’t know a word they said or the name of a single song – it was excellent! John Meyer and his Blues Express from Western Australia were next and John plowed right into his brilliant, hot guitar wizardry that we witnessed in 2009 when he was here with KNiKi. Heavily inspired by the late great Jimi Hendrix, the band played a great set of straight ahead, hard-rocking music. Bassist Peter Oates’ vocals complemented John’s guitar perfectly. The New Machine Plays Pink Floyd was up next and if you're a Floyd fan, we hope you got what you came for. Guitarist and vocalist Mark Emery’s ensemble was nicely filled in with some local lads on drums and keyboards. Favourites of the 2010 festival, the Norwegian Prodigal Sons opened with their familiar heavy Rolling Stones riffs, and front man Kai once again was MC Ricky Zen with admirers
outrageously dressed – this time all in green. The relentless rockers got the crowd roaring with them from the start and finished with an extensive rhythm section playing Sympathy for the Devil. No less than ten people were on stage for their finale. Awesome! During the final break of the night a few moments of seriousness descended on the big crowd as Andy handed over a BIG donation check to members of the Rotary Club of Patong Beach. The money is dedicated to the club’s local children’s education fund. Curtis Salgado, proved, as expected, to be the perfect headliner for a great festival. He literally 'brought the house down' with his superb showmanship. Opening with the classic Hand Me Down My Walkin’ Cane, he blended songs from his brilliant CD Clean Getaway with home-spun blues, rock, and soul. We thought we heard some pretty good harp last year (and we did!) but Curtis is truly a master of the instrument, infusing his infectious blues with his brilliant licks, constantly trading lines with Rich Harper on guitar and Jimmy Carpenter on sax. His vocals on an old soul ballad evoked memories of the great Otis Redding... He hypnotised the crowd with ten minutes of the unforgettable Cookie Dough. Curtis held the crowd like we've never seen here before. Two encores and we still wanted more, but again – it was very late... but what a night to remember! And what a great crowd. Both nights were very well attended, but Saturday’s crowd set a new record, not only for size – but pure, unadulterated enthusiasm. They illustrated what a joy it is to get out and hear real live music played by real, live musicians! Rock AND Roll, baby! Let’s see, just 11 months until next year’s Blues Rock Festival...what to do?

Salvatore’s
Italian
Looking for a break from the tourist spots on Phuket’s west coast – and the best pizza on the island? Follow the locals to Salvatore’s, a rustic 'trattoria' in Phuket Town. Salvatore offers traditional Italian cuisine using only the finest fresh ingredients, such as linguini alla bottarga, sea bass in salt crust, gnocchi with fresh sausage and pizza baked in a wood-burning oven. Other specialties are created with local shellfish, like mouth-watering lobster ravioli and fettucini with crab. Start with the bruschetta, with delicately skinned tomatoes and fresh herbs and beef carpaccio with olive oil. The food is prepared under the careful eye of the Sardinian executive chef and owner, Salvatore Cossu, a fixture on Phuket’s restaurant scene for his cooking skills. He personally shops for the vegetables and fish in local markets. The bread is baked daily; the pastas and sausages are home-made. Ask him about daily food specials as well as wine suggestions. Salvatore offers about 60 labels, including Sardinian wines. The service is warm and the ambience is friendly. But the real star is the food.

LIM's Restaurant & NINE Lounge and Bar
Thai
LIM’s at Kalim Bay is an elegant custom-designed restaurant and a gallery of bold, very abstract art, built on a tropical hillside garden beside one of Phuket’s few natural rivers. Call it a hidden treasure. LIM’s has special offerings of generous portions that combine interesting textures and tastes. There’s a pomelo salad with shrimp that has a fresh, very clean taste. The slices of marinated duck breast rolled in cucumber are very light and match either the Australian or New Zealand red or white wines offered on the menu. Traditional, popular curries can be found on the menu with large king prawns, chicken or duck and there’s a section for vegetarians. Along with NINE Lounge and Bar, this is a restaurant to relax in, to take your time between courses and enjoy the company of your dinner companions. Until now, the pleasure of an evening at LIM’s, a favourite of Thai and expat residents, has spread mostly by discreet word of mouth as the chosen elegant hideaway for the discerning diner. Around Phuket Patong Seafood
International
Thai
Take a journey into the home of real Thai food! Patong Seafood Restaurant was the first seafood restaurant to open in the then village-like Patong. It has changed very little from those days except for a major refurbishment after the 2004 tsunami in which major damage was sustained.
Kantok Restaurant offers you a natural and warm ambiance where traditional healthy food is matched with fun and exciting traditional dance. “The Kantok” table was originally used by the northern households welcoming guests of importance into their homes.
The restaurant was rebuilt as it was in original Thai style with open dining area and a high circular design ceiling. Only the freshest seafood is brought straight from the boat and market to give you the finest selections, which are on display – chilled and ready to eat. The kitchens at Patong Seafood Restaurant are a place to behold, where their chefs with simply so many years of experience, prepare your seafood and other Thai delicacies to perfection.
Our Thai set menu is attentively prepared, beginning with our Thai appetizer platter which includes items which continue to be a rare delicacy these days due to the delicate mix of ingredients to create an old and unique taste. A sampling of our main event including green curry with chicken, Mussaman curry and our famed red duck curry is something not to be missed. End your distinct culinary experience with a local Thai dessert.
The first thing that you will notice are the friendly staff. The smiles, the attentiveness and the helpfulness in making your choice are something you will appreciate and you will then know why many visitors and locals come back time and time again to enjoy this real taste of Thailand.
Enjoy our Thai classical dance show which runs everyday from 7 to 9pm and is accompanied by a Thai traditional orchestra. If you haven’t tried the best red duck curry in town or yet seen a Thai classical dance, it is well worth the effort of doing so. It is beautifully relaxing and an almost hypnotic way to enjoy the evening.

The Siam Supper Club
International
The Siam Supper Club is definitely an icon!! It screams the word. There are few places in the world that provoke such a sense of time and place. The venue is a long bar and grill that has become synonymous with the cool of a bygone age still leaving it's sophisticated imprint. It's cool... in the same way scotch on the rocks is cool. Beautiful... no glorious jazz filling the few empty spaces. One of the most interesting collections of sepia black and whites remain true to this same time and place. When one is at The Siam Supper Club, one has to give up the mantle of tourist or visitor and for a brief time assume the rank of resident or... Phuketian. For when you're at The Siam Supper Club you are well and truly placed in a subtley lit and timbered comfort zone where a cocktail is still a cocktail damn it, the wines are big and the fabulous food reminds you of how things used to be. Ah! The tropics!

With its smart dÊcor and casual ambience along with a superb menu of authentic Italian cuisine, this place to dine is destined to turn heads and attract attention. Fresh seafood and accompaniments along with various Italian breads that are baked daily in the restaurant make for an unbeatable start. All the pasta is also freshly made at the restaurant and the Gnocchi with gorgonzola cheese and speck and Bolognese style Tagliatelle are a delicious combination of both pasta dishes. People Profile
John Underwood John Underwood has created a unique Phuket centre of design excellence at his Underwood factory and new Brush Restaurant... and he is not finished yet.
Where are you from? I was born into a sheep and cattle farming family in Central Queensland in Australia. It was hot and isolated. Our house was like the classic one you see in that movie 'Australia'. When did you first get seriously interested in art? I went to the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) and then to the new Victorian College of the Arts. One of my tutors was Fred Williams, one of Australia’s most famous artists. So what led you to come to Phuket? I started a company called Artbusters in Australia and through that came under the wing of John Truscott, who had won academy awards for design in film, to do the Brisbane Expo ’88. From there we got jobs at Expos in South Korea and Spain. Through this work I got a job at Seacon Square in Bangkok. It was a tough time after the 1997 crash. In 2000 I came to Phuket. Did you come here intending to set up a business? Yes. We found this disused wood factory (where Underwood is located on the by-pass road). First we rented the factory, then I bought it. It was a stroke of luck. But we had no money. It was tough. Tell us something about your business. I see it very much as an art studio. A boutique style of business. While the world produces mass products, we're doing things that nobody has the time to concentrate on. We've always done art so we keep as close to art and design as possible. What changes have you seen in the business? Every job is similar, but trends change. For example in the 1990s there was a demand for what's called slump glass (melting glass over a pattern) but then it went out of favour, then it came back into favour. The same with mosaics, which we still do a lot of today. How does working in Phuket compared to back home in Australia? I'm much luckier here. I'm a fabricator who works with designers to make their designs into something tangible. Here we don’t have to put up a sign to get work. It comes to us. Also, Thais are very art oriented with good skills. Aussies are not that way inclined. Where do you live in Phuket? We originally lived in a house in Kalim Beach (now the new Brush Restaurant). But the Tsunami destroyed much of our possessions, although not the structure. We then moved here and built our home next to the factory. We slept under the office table for six months.
What do you think the future holds for you? I hope to further develop my interest in eco anything, such as recycling. I believe we should work toward a world which is happy with less, not more. It's much more fun now to work with people and enjoy the experience; and I'd like to do more art. How do you evaluate success? If you wake up in the morning and want to get out of bed to do something, you've succeeded.
What do you like most about living on Phuket? It's the complete opposite of where I grew up on an isolated farm. It's like a paradise. You see people; great climate. I love living in another culture because it keeps you on your toes. I love waking up in the morning and still expect the unexpected. I feel I still have something to offer in Asia.
What do you do with your free time, if you have any? I enjoy this (working with art). I don’t play golf. Artists are artists 100 percent. It's a bit like musicians. I need to travel more. Like my recent trip to Burma.
What's the hardest, most frustrating, thing about living here? The banking system. It's difficult to borrow money here as a foreigner. This can be frustrating for solving short term cash flow problems but I guess it could also be seen as a good thing. It makes you more creative in solving such problems, so you end up with less debt overall. Do you have family here. If yes, what nationality is your wife? Yes. My wife Judy is Australian. I have a daughter, Casey, 18 and a son, Zac, 20, who is studying at the Central St. Martins School of Art in London. Casey has just been accepted by the same university group.
42
Are you involved in any local charities? Yes. One I strongly support is the WWP Thai group, who raise money through an annual calendar. Also a church group that looks after Burmese women. I like to offer opportunities to provide employment.

Thailand Boat and Bike
adventure Thailand and its Andaman Sea has been a popular choice for sailing, snorkelling, diving and island exploration by boat for many years. Its beautiful coastline, sandy beaches, coconut trees and warm tropical water are what make ocean lovers head to the land of Siam for their dose of aquatic activity.
Away from the ocean – in the mountains, villages and rice paddies, bicycle tourism is becoming more and more popular in Thailand and throughout South East Asia, as tourists seek to discover something off the beaten track, enjoy views at a nice relaxed pace and get some gentle... or not so gentle exercise while on their vacation. James Hembrow of Amazing Bike Tours has come up with a way to combine both of these activities in one action-packed 5-day expedition of Thailand adventure travel. No, they're not suggesting bicycling on water... but they have created a multi-day bike tour that, instead of using hotels and moving to a new destination every few days, will use a boat as the base for accommodation... floating accommodation. So, after each day's biking you can cruise in comfort on the Andaman Sea to the next destination for some more mountain biking activity.
James, the founder of Amazing Bike Tours, told us, “I've always loved the ocean and being on boats; I also grew up doing a lot of biking in Somerset, England. With this new programmme, we've brought together our love of the ocean and biking to create a boat and bike trip. Some of our land-based multi day bike tours are inland, so are not suitable for the combination, but there are so many great areas for biking close to the sea that we thought instead of moving from hotel to hotel, we should live onboard a beautiful boat and get to the biking areas by sea." This 5-day programme includes biking in Koh Yao Noi, Koh Yao Yai, Krabi province and Koh Lanta. The biking terrain will vary from paved roads with little traffic to off road dirt trails. The biking routes take guests cycling through rice paddies, rubber tree and pineapple plantations, past fishing villages and amazing ocean views.

Feature: Thailand Boat and Bike Adventure
Also known as 'The Junk', as she is a traditional Chinese Junk sailing vessel, she has featured in many movies including The James Bond movie 'The Man with the Golden Gun'. More recently she was featured in 'Das Weisse Gold', 'Swiss Family Robinson' and 'Shanghai. A true classic boat, she adds to the experience of the Thailand Boat and Bike Adventure Cruise. It's not all cruising and biking though. While in Krabi province the guests have the chance to climb up one thousand, two hundred and thirty-seven steps to a Buddhist monument perched on a mountain top; the view from the top makes the climb more than worth while. Watch out for all the monkeys on the way up. On the final full day onboard, it's time to give those cycling legs a rest. The Junk visits the Phi Phi Islands for snorkelling, swimming and beach visits. As there are several bike guides taking care of guests, the cycling is arranged in small groups, with a nice easy pace for the casual cyclist, and other groups of more experienced riders tackling some challenging off road trails. All of the planned rides are optional, so guests who prefer to skip a ride and relax onboard, read a book and enjoy the tropical weather can do so.
After five full days of biking, trekking, swimming and snorkelling, the vessel returns to Phuket. The Boat and Bike Adventure is a package that includes accommodation onboard, all meals, snacks, fruit, tea, coffee and drinking water. Trek mountain bikes and helmets are provided, but guests who prefer to bring their own bikes are free to do so.
The floating accommodation is also what makes the trip unique. Amazing Bike Tours have charted The June Hong Chian Lee, one of several junks built in Penang, Malaysia. She's a 30-metre, 140-ton three mast junk with 330 square metres of sail area. Built in 1962 for charcoal transportation, the June Hong Chian Lee was part of a small merchant fleet that traded up and down the coastline from Burma to Malaysia. She was mainly used to transport mango wood charcoal until 1985, then she was restored and redesigned for the first time to serve as a classic yacht. In 1997, she changed owners and was completely restored and set up as a liveaboard vessel. The June Hong is constructed mainly from a hard teak wood called Takien Tong. The Sukko staff are dressed beautifully in traditional Thai style and the spa design, influenced by the ancient Siamese capital, creates a haven of calm yet regal serenity. I felt I had left all my troubles behind. Chilled out by the soothing background music, my mind was filled with a peaceful wellbeing as I enjoyed the warm traditional welcome (again from Sukko culture) of the ‘Flower Floating Ritual’ – similar to ‘Loy Kratong’, where the idea is to float away past stresses and wish for luck and joy from that moment on.

I was pampered with the ‘All-Soother’ package, a 2 1/2 hour experience that left me feeling relaxed and refreshed. This four-treatment combination began with 30 minutes in the steam room and the Jacuzzi, followed by a Thai Turmeric Body Scrub designed to soften your skin and awaken your senses. The scrub was followed by a traditional Thai massage, the pressure applied gently but firmly. "Is this pressure okay? Too strong? How are you feeling?" my therapist asked me from time to time. “Mmm… perfect…” were the only responses that seemed to suit how I felt. My last step, which came all too soon, was the Thai Herb Purifying Facial Treatment, using creams and herbs that left my face feeling smooth and glowing – and even looked good enough to eat! Sukko Spa’s restaurant, Suk Savoey Spa Cuisine, presents a unique concept: "Menu by Blood Types" and "Menu by Element". For those who want to exercise, the Suk Sanan Club provides a myriad of fitness opportunities, including ‘Rue Sri Dat Ton’ (the hermit self stretching), a traditional Thai exercise or, for something more strenuous, try ‘Muay Thai Chaiya’, a traditional and effective art of selfdefense. Parents who come to Sukko to relax can leave their kids at Suk Zon Kid's Club, where they will enjoy with a variety of fun yet safe activities. Sukko Spa, one of Phuket’s most luxurious spas, is located on Chaofa Road just 30 minutes from Phuket International Airport, 10 minutes from Phuket Town, 30 minutes from Kata or Karon Beach and 20 minutes from Patong Beach. It is creatively designed in a contemporary Thai style, set amongst 15 rai (6 acres) of luxuriously landscaped tropical forest.

Spa
Lemongrass House To visit this home of award-winning spa oils, creams, soaps and so many other exquisite products is a delight. The aromas are enchanting. At Lemongrass, you can enjoy a spa treatment to sample and choose from their huge range, then take home your choice to enjoy at your leisure. They even have a great range of kid’s spa products.
Bobby Duchowny studied aromatherapy – a healing art that promotes massage, when combined with specific herb and spice oils, as a method to reduce stress, boost energy and heal certain physical ailments – at the American Aromatherapy Association. Some years ago while on holiday in Thailand, he visited an organic farm in Petchaboon province and became interested in the natural healing properties of Thai herbs and spices. “I was particularly attracted to lemon grass as it was used in many popular Thai foods, as a medicine for stomach disorders and even as a repellent for mosquitoes,” he recalls. Bobby used lemon grass as his signature herb to create a line of essential oils, face and body creams, shower gels and bath crystals, which he and his wife Palita sold at Bangkok’s world-famous Weekend Market. What started, several years ago, as a modest enterprise has blossomed into a successful operation offering over 90 oils and a wide range of body care products through many outlets, as well as supplying many of Thailand’s top resorts and spas with aromatherapy oils.
“Our advantage is that we produce the freshest spa products and our stock is never kept longer than three months; using fresh spa products can be likened to eating fresh food rather than processed food.” Based on his years of experiences at some of the top spas in Southeast Asia, Bobby has developed a full line of healthy skin care products. For example, his hydrating face and body creams have 25 per cent aloe vera, white orchid and cucumber extracts. And he’s developed a revitalizing mineral muscle soak made from Andaman Sea salt crystals, blended with white orchid and chamomile extracts, to help draw out impurities and soothe and revive tense muscles. “People are sensitive to different scents at different times of day. It’s a good idea to get a variety of essential oils and experiment with what smells and feels good to you,” he says. “Our aromatherapy massage and body oils can be either uplifting or calming to the spirit. They’re carefully balanced handblended oils created by adding pure essential oils to nourishing, vitamin E enriched, sweet almond and jojoba base oils. Lemongrass has won many awards, including Condé Nast Hot List 2007, and has been featured in several top magazines, including Time Magazine’s “Best of Asia”. According to Time, “If you want to smell like no one else, try mixing a selection from the more than 90 natural scents at Lemongrass House.” Lemongrass House is located in Cherngtalay, Surin Beach and Chalong, where you can buy their full range of spa products at modest prices, making perfect gifts for friends and family who can enjoy the aromatic scents of Asia in the privacy of their homes – no matter where in the world they live. The Royal Spa To experience The Royal Spa is to feel the true beauty of nature and reflect on the power of body, mind and spiritual connections.
The Royal Spa and Health Club
Some treatments & packages at The Royal Spa
In the heart of bustling Phuket Town lies a quiet haven of heavenly peace. With the continuous sounds of water, trickling, bubbling and steaming, and with the sweet fruity scents that fill the air, the being is enticed into a flowing stillness of body and mind. The Royal Spa and Health Club is a popular tropical day spa with both locals and visitors alike, which is managed by the Royal Spa Development and Management Company. With an excellent reputation in the spa development industry through its experience and attention to detail, the Royal Spa and Health Club offers a distinctly personal experience. Of the signature treatments, the Royal Stone Therapy is one that is particularly interesting. The Hot Stone massage technique, founded 5000 years ago, uses black volcanic stones, which are heated and placed on the body, producing a profound effect, stilling the mind and easing the body. Unlike many of the high-end spa complexes on the island, which market themselves exclusively to tourists, the reasonable prices and relaxed but professional staff at the Royal Spa, means that many local Thais, as well as tourists, are beginning to use the spa. This has helped to erase the often stiff, and over-formal atmosphere at many of Phuket’s spa resorts, giving the Royal Spa an ambience of authentic relaxation and pleasure. All the therapists working at the Royal Spa have been trained at the in-house 'Phuket Spa Academy', established in 2004, to provide a comprehensive spa training course. The curriculum and assessments provide a measurement of therapist expertise and knowledge within the Thai spa industry. Since then, the Royal Spa Development and Management Company have provided comprehensive and professional spa management, and development programs, for spa retreats throughout Thailand. Their aim is to provide a standard of service and expertise throughout the Thai spa industry, to ensure a high quality of service and standard of treatment, throughout Thailand. It truly offers the ‘one stop services for Thai spa business’ and a quality of relaxed professionalism, rarely found in luxury spa resorts. Right now The Royal Spa have 12 branches that are managed in resorts in Patong, Kata, Karon, Panwa, Ao Chalong and Phuket Town and you are welcome to experience our spas with us anytime. What should you look for
in a real estate agent? Having been in real estate for the past 30 years, I think I have a clear idea of what you should expect from a Real Estate Agent. Unfortunately, they don’t always provide the professional service they should. Perhaps the key word here is 'professional', as there are no requirements in many developing countries like Thailand to be licensed. This means that anyone with a shop window and a basic knowledge of a few properties could set him or herself up as a real estate agent.
As with all businesses, first impressions are often the best; does the agency appear professional or is it simply a shop window with pictures in it? Does it have a comprehensive website with details of who the principals and staff are? What are their qualifications? Assuming you've found yourself a competent professional agent (despite my previous observations there are several on Phuket), they should have a thorough knowledge of the property market in their area. They should be able to show you the best (if not all) properties and developments which fulfill your requirements and fall within your budget – including those that you may not have been aware of. More importantly they should know of any problems a developer or development has had, or might be facing. They will know the history of the developer and development or property and owner – especially important during a recession. An agent should be familiar with all aspects of Property Law in Thailand and be able to advise on the benefits and downsides of the different types of ownership available, whether Foreign Freehold Condominium, Thai Freehold, Leasehold, Protected Leasehold, Offshore companies etc. He should be aware of currency restrictions, the movement of currency and the best way to get a good deal on currency. Ironically, all professional and experienced investors use the services of an agent, whereas an 'amateur' (ie anyone other than a professional investor), might think he has a better chance of getting a good deal by going it alone. This is unlikely. An agent can usually negotiate a better price on behalf of his client for several reasons:
contacted me a year later wishing to sell his 'properties', sheepishly pointing out that he had bought a second property at the development, a larger villa, but had not contacted me as he thought he'd get a better deal going direct. The irony is that the first client had bought the same 20+ million Baht villa for 700,000 baht less through me – a big saving – and was able to enjoy my services to follow up the construction of the villa, send him photographs, keep him updated, give advice etc. A good agent will not only assist you to make the purchase, he will advise on which lawyer you might use, whether an international or a local Thai law firm, follow up all the documentation, see through the build process if it's an off-plan purchase and, if required, rent it for you when it's not occupied. Most importantly he has local knowledge, an absolute imperative in any market. Most good developers have attractive sales and marketing material but, worryingly, so do the bad developers. Neither, of course, will point out any negatives about their development. A good agent should be a professional advisor and negotiator, not a salesman, and most of all remain unbiased, yet at the same time willing to voice an opinion based on his knowledge.

· The seller doesn't want to lose the agent, who is more valuable than a single client because of his access to many clients. · The agent stays impartial and detached, whereas the buyer will often too easily show his hand and miss the opportunity to bargain. I could give many examples of this, but perhaps the following is the best: In one large scale development I had two clients at the same time, one an experienced Indian property investor with a huge portfolio, the other a canny (so he thought) buyer from Yorkshire. The former went on to buy eight properties of different types within the development and asked me to negotiate for him on each occasion. The latter bought one small condo and

LEGAL RESTRICTIONS ON FOREIGN BUSINESSES IN THAILAND
In our previous article we gave potential foreign investors in the Kingdom of Thailand an overview of business organizations existing in the Kingdom of Thailand. Besides having an overview understanding of the legal structures of various entities in Thailand potential investors should understand the legal restrictions on foreign businesses in Thailand. Restrictions are imposed on some business activities for foreign investors unless special permissions have been granted; and certain business activities have been reserved only for companies having majority Thai ownership. Participation in certain types of businesses is governed by the Foreign Business Act (1999) to any person or company that falls within the definition of “foreigner” as specified in the Act. The legal definition of a “foreigner” pursuant to the Foreign Business Act is: (i) a natural person who is not of Thai nationality; (ii) a juristic entity that is not registered in Thailand; (iii) a juristic entity incorporated in Thailand with foreign ownership accounting for one-half or more of the total number of shares and/or registered capital; (iv) a juristic entity incorporated in Thailand with foreign shareholders accounting for one-half or more of the total number of shareholders in the juristic entity; and (v) a limited partnership or ordinary registered partnership whose managing partner or manager is a foreigner. Interesting for potential foreign investors is that in March 2007, a draft Amendment to the Foreign Business Act was issued by the members of the National Legislative Assembly. The significant change made by this amendment is with respect to the definition of “Foreign company” to be extended to include voting rights, whereby if foreigners have majority voting rights in the company (although they are minority in percentage of shares and number of shareholders) the company is still considered as a “foreign company” pursuant to the Foreign Business Act.
Restricted Businesses: There are three business sectors in which majority foreign participation is prohibited or restricted pursuant to the Foreign Business Act. These extensively encompass the following: List One: Businesses which foreigners are not permitted to carry on due to special reasons. Businesses in this category include activities relating to publishing and broadcasting, agriculture, forestry, fishing and trading in real property. List Two: Businesses relating to national security, art, culture or local custom. List Three: Foreigners are prohibited from engaging in businesses in areas in which Thais are not yet ready for competition with foreigners unless permission is obtained from the Director-General of the Business Registration Department, with the concurrence of the Committee of Foreign Business. Generally those businesses listed in List One are absolutely prohibited to foreign investors unless there is an exception contained in a special law or treaty. The businesses under List Two and List Three can be conducted by foreigners if they receive an Alien Business License. Moreover the Act provides that the minimum amount of registered capital of a private company that is a foreigner by definition must be no less than two million Baht or not be less than three million Baht in the case where the type of business requires the approval of the Minister of Commerce or the DirectorGeneral of the Business Registration Department. Please note that if a business is not mentioned on the above lists a foreign investor in principle can conduct business in this sector in Thailand. However the foreign investor should notice and check before investing that there could be other laws and regulations to prevent foreigners to conduct the certain business.
74
Exemptions: The Foreign business Act is not applicable to a foreigner who engages in certain businesses in Thailand with the permission of the Thai government for definite duration, or whose activities are covered by negotiation between Thailand and other countries. Furthermore, exemptions to the majority foreign ownership of companies are granted to companies that obtain Board of Investment Promotion Approval. There are also corporate structures available to prevent majority shareholders from making certain decisions or taking certain actions on behalf of the company through specially tailored Articles of Association. Bilateral Treaties: In the year 1968, Thailand and the United States of America signed the Treaty of Amity and Economic Relations. This Treaty provides that nationals and companies from either country will be accorded national treatment in respect of establishment or investment in companies engaging in commercial, industrial, financial and other business activities within the territories of the other country. Thus, citizens of the U.S.A. can freely invest in enterprises in Thailand by claiming an exemption to the Foreign Business Act pursuant to the mentioned Treaty of Amity and Economic Relations, which such exemption at the time of publication was still being upheld by the Thai authorities at the Ministry of Commerce. However, the Treaty specifically excludes the enterprises engaged in communication, transportation, fiduciary functions, banking involving deposittaking functions, the exploitation, ownership or trade of land or other natural resources or domestic trade in indigenous agricultural products. Please note that the mentioned Treaty of Amity and Economic Relations between Thailand and the United States of America has expired and negotiations between the contract parties are ongoing. However, registrations under the Treaty are still accepted and allowed as temporary measures until the negotiations are completed. CONCLUSION With knowledge of the legal restrictions for foreigners making business in Thailand potential investors in the Kingdom of Thailand have several options to structure a business entity in Thailand and conduct their business in different sectors. In any case potential investors in Thailand should seek for legal advice before conducting business in Thailand. The numbers game A changing of the guard of Australian airlines took place within three days in February that brought yet another new carrier to Phuket, underscoring the island’s intense rivalry with its main competitor, Bali.
On 22 February, Strategic Airlines – Australia’s newest full service carrier – touched down in Phuket and three days later V Australia, also a relatively new carrier from Richard Branson’s Virgin Group, took off for the last time after less than two years servicing Phuket. The trouble for Phuket is that Strategic also launched a Perth-Bali service which flies from Brisbane to Bali three times a week compared to once a week to Phuket, using an Airbus A330-200, featuring 30 business class seats and 243 economy class seats. Strategic also operates Perth-Derby-Denpasar; Brisbane-Port HedlandDenpasar and Brisbane-Townsville-Denpasar. To compound the comparison with Bali, the A330-200 has fewer seats than the Boeing 777 of V Australia, which has more than 300 seats, making it the largest twin jet in the world. So in terms of Phuket attracting more Australian visitors in 2011, the island has its work cut out. Already Australian visitors are being eclipsed in numbers during this high season by the Russians and Chinese, although the bulk of Australian tourists come in Phuket’s low season (May-October) when the winter weather at home forces them to look for suitable holiday spots. Generally, however, Australian visitors overall are in the top five each year. Bali, of course, is closer than Phuket but it comes with conditions. While Thailand had its fair share of political problems in 2010, forcing many cancellations, Thailand is still projected as a relatively safe destination for tourists. This is borne out by the 2010 arrival figures, showing a total of 3.5 million arrivals, a 22 percent increase over the previous year. This came with a massive boost from Russia and China, the latter starting direct flights with Hainan Airlines via Beijing, and the former with mainly large charter groups from Moscow. Traffic surpassed the 2007 peak year by 19 percent with a 28 percent increase over 2009. Other international airlines directly servicing Phuket include Dragon Air (Hong Kong); Jetstar (Australia); AirAsia, Firefly and Malaysian Airlines (Malaysia); SilkAir and Tiger Airways (Singapore); AirAsia (Bali); Air Berlin (Germany); Qatar Airways (Doha, Middle East) via Kuala Lumpur and Asiana Airlines (South Korea). There are also numerous charter flights from Sweden, Taiwan, Japan, Russia and other parts of Europe. Domestic flights bringing in connecting passengers from Bangkok include those on Thai Airways International, AirAsia, Bangkok Airways and Happy Air, a Phuket-owned start up that flies to Ranong. Latest figures show Bali had almost 400,000 Australian visitors in the year to August, 2010, a 47.45 percent increase from the year before. Australians made
76
up 23.83 percent of the overall tourist arrivals in Bali, reaching 1.67 million in totally January-August, 2010. By comparison, between January-June Australian arrivals in Phuket were up 13 percent to 326,084, still a healthy increase, but considerably below Bali. With Strategic, a former charter airline, looking to expand its international network, it will be intriguing to watch how the airline does on the Phuket route, especially as V Australia claimed it could not make enough profit on the route flying a B777. This may be true, as the aircraft is slightly larger than the A330-200, and therefore costly to run on a route of only around 8-9 hours full of passengers in economy class, where the profit margin is much lower than business class. It is a fact of life for airlines servicing tourist destinations like Phuket that the margin (or yield as it is called in the airline industry) is much lower because of the predominently economy class passenger numbers. However, Phuket has some advantages over Bali to offset distance from Australia. For example, the Australian government often issues travel advisories against travelling to Bali because of the terrorist threat. Australians are particularly sensitive to this advice because of the 2002 Bali bombings which killed 88 Australians and wounded many more. Such advisories were issued against Thailand last year because of the Red Shirt uprising, something that outraged Phuket tourist operators as the island was bundled in with a confrontation that was actually confined to a small part of Bangkok and was not emulated or repeated on Phuket, which was completely separated from the Bangkok violence. In fact a campaign to foreign governments to be more judicious in how they word their advisories was started by one prominent Thailand hotlier. Whatever the attractions, or distractions, however, it is fair to say that the more direct flights from Australia to Phuket that can be launched, the more competitive the island will be with Bali.

Join Songkran Festival in Phuket No visitor who has ever been here during the month of April can have avoided coming into contact with the enchanting, hilarious, and occasionally exasperating and downright dangerous watery explosion of public celebration which is Songkran. Thailand's most celebrated festival is Songkran – the Thai new year. It starts on April 13 and lasts for between three and ten days, depending on where you’re resident. For most, it’s lots of fun and an excuse to cool off at what is usually the hottest time of the year.
A mass water throwing in Phuket is generally confined to a single d day (13 April), and to specific zones − in Phuket City at Saphan Hin and at Rawai Beach, Kata/Karon Beaches, Nai Yang Beach, Surin Beach and Patong Beach, Songkran in Patong usually begins the evening before – April 12, when normal activities in the bars cease, and the world's biggest water carnival begins. If you’re staying in one of the tourist centres like Patong, there really is no way of avoiding a soaking, unless you stay in your hotel. For more information on Songkran festival contact: Tourism Authority of Thailand Phuket office, Tel: 0-7621-1036 or visit website: www.tat.or.th/phuket.

Anaesthesia If you ever need an operation, even a small one, there's one group of specialists that you'll be pleased to meet in order to make your experience more pleasant and less painful – the anaesthetists.
Anaesthetists are highly trained physicians whose area of expertise, anaesthesiology, has a relatively short history, with most advances being made in the last 100 years. Through the use of drugs to bring about partial or complete loss of sensation and consciousness, either to the bodyy as a whole or part of it, the anesthetist’s primary role is to ensure that an unpleasant experience is as safe and as painless as possible. Before the 1800s, patients who required surgery had to Befo endure endu unbearable pain and suffering with intoxication from alcohol being the only know means of dulling the fr alc experience. It has been reported that patients were frequently experien strapped to the operating table, fully conscious whilst limbs strappe were aamputated and the body invaded by the surgeon’s
knife. One case reported by Sir Robert Liston (a leading surgeon in the Victorian era) describes how his patient broke loose from his restraints in the middle of an abdominal operation, fled to the toilet and locked himself inside. Liston broke down the toilet door and dragged his patient back to the operating table to finish the operation. Liston was also famous for the speed in which he completed his operations, as well as for the fact that he cut off the finger of one of his assistants during his quest to complete a procedure as fast as possible. Thankfully things have progressed considerably since the days where sickening screams erupted from the operating rooms. Marijuana, hashish, opium and acupuncture were all used in China and India as anaesthetics. Ether and chloroform became popular in western countries during the late 1800s to put patients to sleep – but

Useful info Anaesthesia
The next major advancement came when drugs could be introduced intravenously, directly into the blood circulation, with barbiturates being used to put patients to sleep quickly, without having to rely on inhalation of the drugs which were particularly unpleasant. Muscle relaxants were introduced in the early 1950s and then came a major advance in the form of Halothane, a revolutionary inhalation agent which was much safer and easier to use. Refinements have continued, with less potent and less toxic forms of analgesia and muscle relaxants being available to the anaesthetist today.
complications were common, with some patients not waking up, a terminal side effect. Nitrous oxide, more commonly known as laughing gas, was also introduced around this time and is still used today. Cocaine became the next major advancement in anesthesiology – as a local anaesthetic, where only a particular area of the body could be desensitized by local infiltration of the drug or a spinal block could be used, producing lower body paralysis and loss of sensation, without having to render the patient unconscious. Controlling a patient’s airway and breathing is a vital function for the anaesthetist. Administering a full anaesthetic used to result in cessation of breathing, meaning that the surgeon had to complete the surgery before the patient died from lack of oxygen. It was not until the 1920s that anaesthetists perfected the skill of introducing a tube into the airways, more commonly known today as endotracheal intubation. Once a tube was inserted, it made controlling respiration much easier, giving the surgeon valuable time to operate with more skill and precision.
Anaesthesia is now very safe, with mortality rates of less than 1 in 250,000. It's also a very specialised area of medicine and we should all be thankful that amazing advances have been made to reduce what was once, to say the least, an unpleasant experience.
