Phuket International Boat Show (PIMEX) 29 March - 01 April @ Royal Phuket Marina
A car treasure hunt in paradise with a difference, the Phuket Invitational Car Rally takes participants over unusual roads and into uncharted country in order to raise money for charity. The route and driving is within the capabilities of any driver and vehicle, but is fun and challenging for the whole family. A driver and navigator are required in each vehicle. The Rally starts and finishes by the Chalong Pier. The event is supported by GOMS, BBAP and other voluntary organisations in Phuket.

It was reported that seven boats and numerous luxury cars sold had a collective estimated value of $17 million USD. The event will cover over 2,000 sqm of airconditioned exhibition space as well as many on-water display boats.

Yacht Charters steps forward for Bay Regatta It’s par for the course when marinas, yacht brokers and the like cross the border into the restaurant business, but Bay Regatta 2012 co-sponsor, Phuket’s iconic Italian restaurant DaVinci, scored a first when they crossed in the opposite direction. Sponsorship of yachting and yacht racing is one thing – and DaVinci has shown other island businesses how that should be done – but what’s an Italian restaurant doing dipping its toes into Phuket’s yacht charter market? According to DaVinci partner, David Roberts, also CEO of Aedas, the world’s largest architectural outfit, the move should come as no surprise. "The restaurant and boats are individual business units, but as part of the same brand they’re complementary – as will be our future real estate and retail businesses. The key underlying thread is our ‘lifestyle concept’, which is not limited to any one type of business.”
David Roberts
A clever master plan or just a bit of a hobby? Neither really… “I don't subscribe to any hobbies; DaVinci is a viable ongoing business, but it all began quite casually over a bottle of fine wine with my business partner Mark Norris,” said Roberts, adding, “As an architect, I’m in the business of creating buildings and places that are ever more a reflection of lifestyle aspirations. DaVinci is my interpretation of what a lifestyle brand can be in Asia and, after the purchase of my first boat in 2010, the charter business seemed a natural progression for the DaVinci lifestyle concept, at the same time as promoting the brand through yacht racing.” From that first boat purchase in 2010, the fledgling DaVinci Yacht Charters already operates four vessels: an Andaman Cabriolet sailing catamaran, a Sunseeker Manhattan 50 flybridge power yacht, a classic sailing yacht, (Willow II – based on a 200 year old design) and the soon-to-arrive DaVinci 007 ‘Hovpod’ hovercraft, while the next

planned acquisition is a pure racing catamaran to carry DaVinci’s regatta aspirations to the next level. The charter operation is headed up by veteran yachtmaster and engineer, Bruce Issell while, as you’d expect, the on-board catering is second to none. On whether it makes sense for a restaurant business to take a crack at the well-established yacht charter market, Roberts said, “DaVinci offers a different approach, whereby boating alone is only part of the experience – and not necessarily the major part. Our bespoke packages meet the expectations and needs of our customers, for whom entertaining, adventure or simple relaxation may be their main motivations.” But where does sponsorship fit into all this? According to Roberts, “As with all my businesses, community engagement is a key pillar of being relevant to the communities in which we live and do business.

This keeps us relevant and tuned in with people and places, as well as informing us on business opportunities, while, of course, enhancing the reputation of our brand. Yachting is great way to get rid of the stress and the pressures of business; I’ve always enjoyed sailing and participated in a few King's Cup regattas back in the 90s – so yachting was a logical choice as a sponsorship vehicle.” Sponsorship has certainly helped establish brand recognition for DaVinci the restaurant; high profile Phuket Raceweek sponsorship for three consecutive years, supplemented by donation of a floating pontoon to Ao Chalong Yacht Club and the purchase of a training Optimist dinghy for young Thai sailors in Ao Yon have all contributed to the brand’s exposure on the water and in Phuket’s media. “Taking on the role as a major sponsor of Phuket’s own Bay Regatta was the logical next step as we move forwards with our yacht charter business,” said Roberts. “Not only does it reinforce that we’re serious about the DaVinci’s yachting arm, but as the region’s premiere cruising lifestyle regatta, there’s a perfect fit. But what about Roberts’ own time on the water? Is this only about business? “I must confess that, although we’re serious about the business side, I have priority on taking the boats out and thoroughly enjoy the time we spend on them with family and friends,” he said. Boat Lagoon
Royal Phuket Marina was opened in 2005 and shares the approach channel with The Boat Lagoon. The entrance is on port, closer to the sea by about 1 mile. The rectangular outer basin has berthing for 76 yachts. The Boat Lagoon is situated further up the channel after a 90-degree turn to port. Services in both marinas are comparable with facilities elsewhere in the world.

Klong Tha Rua was once the main port of the island, long before Phuket Town was built by the predominantly Chinese tin miners who arrived over 100 years ago. Phuket-based entrepreneur and pleasure-boat enthusiast Khun Kanit Yongsakul started the project some years ago, damming the stream and digging the basin to a depth of five metres before reopening the entrance.

The Boat Lagoon was Phuket’s first marina complex. It has been fully operational since 1994. This circular, 168-berth lagoon was originally a tidal flat at the head of a shallow, meandering 2-mile creek, Klong Tha Rua.

A ROYAL PHUKET MARINA
The phase 1 basin has a minimum depth of 4 metres and berths for 76 yachts up to 30 metres. The 60-ton travel lift services a hard stand that can accommodate 40 yachts. Dockside on the ground floor of the condominium blocks are commercial units housing five top class restaurants, a fitness club and many top-level retail outlets. A recent addition is the conference and exhibition centre where the annual Phuket International Marine Expo (PIMEX) is held. Call the Marina Office on channel 79 when entering the channel or phone 076-379397. More information at www.royalphuketmarina.com or email marina@ royalphuketmarina.com. Phase Two will comprise a prestige development of 150 homes and 300 condominiums around an inner locked basin with 250 berths and a minimum depth of 3.2 metres. Royal Phuket Marina, with its stunning architecture, musical water fountain in the central ‘town square’ and already host to many spectacular events, is fast becoming an island landmark. B BOAT LAGOON MARINA
A canal complex of condominiums, a hotel, serviced apartments and restaurants, shops and offices surrounds the Boat Lagoon. Short and long-term accommodation is available overlooking the marina. Boat Lagoon Marina (left) and Royal Phuket Marina

The Channel The well-marked channel has concrete pilings set approximately 13 metres apart all the way from Ao Tha Rua, starting at 07° 58.65’ N, 98° 24.9’ E. The channel meanders through the large shallow open bay until it enters the mangrove creek. Both the depth and width of this very tight channel vary along its length. Keeled or deep-draft vessels up to 35 metres length and draft 2.5 metres can enter either side of high tide. It is wise to check with the harbour master on the latest channel dredging information. The shallowest depths in the channel, at the time of writing, were 2.5 metres at a 2.8 metre high tide. While in the open water channel, keep the pilings 10-15 metres off the port side all the way in. Allow approximately 45 minutes from the open water channel entrance to arrival in either marina basin (at five knots, which is the speed limit from the entrance to the mangroves onwards). We strongly suggest deep draft vessels negotiate this difficult channel during the last hour of the rising tide.
Services include 3 travel-lifts up to 60 tons and large concrete areas and hard stand for up to 120 vessels. In the inner basin, there are 170 wet berths and in the approach river another 60 berths are currently being installed. All berths have power and water and there are hot showers and changing room facilities nearby. The harbour master is available during office hours on channel 71 or call 076239055. More information at www.phuketboatlagoon.com or email thana@ phuketboatlagoon.com. The Boat Lagoon is currently the centre of marine services in Phuket, with many service companies located in the ring of shops immediately around and facing the berths. Several boat charter, brokerage and tour companies have joined the more typical marine services, which include haul-out, repair, electrical, canvas, cleaning and others. It’s an interesting and useful mix of water related industries. Quite a few fascinating characters, some with many years experience in Phuket and other ports around the world, can be found working in these shops. There are several restaurants around the marina, including Watermark, Boat Lagoon Resort, The Taverna, Spice Island, Winch and The Bakery.

Photos from 15th The Bay Regatta by RolienPhotography.com
BAY REGATTA WELCOMES STRONG BREEZES Forty-three boats sailed through the stunning karst topography of southern Thailand’s Phang Nga Bay last week celebrating the 15th year of one of the most enjoyable sailing events in the region: The Bay Regatta - Phuket, Phang Nga and Krabi.
The regatta was relatively mishap free, despite enjoying unheard of strong breezes throughout most of the races. The biggest drama was a drunken sailor trying to return to his boat after the opening night party. He couldn’t find his boat, he couldn’t even remember its name, and so after exhausting his fellow longtail passengers’ patience, he was eventually taken back to shore and left to contemplate life on the beach. The Russians turned out in unprecedented strength and put in a very impressive performance at this year’s regatta, with Arbuzov Andrev’s Ruby Tuesday capturing the five-boat Racing Class. Fellow countryman Nikiforov Evgenii’s Gastion placed second and Scott Duncanson’s Quantum Fusion came third. Duncanson’s boat was the fastest through the water for three of the races, but on corrected time was consistently placed behind the Russian boats. In the nine-boat Cruising A class, Neils Degenkolw’s Phoenix took top honours on the strength of three first-place finishes, while frequent regatta winner, Jim Ellis’ Remington had to settle for second place. Richard Macfarlane’s Aida placed third. The 13-boat Multihull Class was won by Andrew Stransky’s Fantasia with David Roberts’ DaVinci coming second and Hans Rahmann’s Voodoo placing third. Two classes saw two boats tied with the same number of points at the end of four days of racing. Gavin Welman’s Rascal and Kevin Perran’s Rusalka tied with eleven points each in the eight-boat Cruising B class, but Rascal took class honours on countback having finished first on the third day. Charlie Preen’s Seventh Heaven came third in the division.

The seven-boat Bareboat Charter division also saw Kochnev Petr’s Tonicola 2 and Kozub Sergey’s Creme Brulee (aka Venture) tie with six points each, both having two first and two second-place finishes, but Tonicola 2’s victory on the final day saw it claim the overall prize. Paul Kendall’s Anchali was third. The Ao Chalong Yacht Club, led by Commodore Grenville Fordham, deserves tremendous credit for a putting on a great regatta. All members of the organizing committee have multiple other responsibilities but they managed to pull together and stage a great event. Principal Race Officer Simon James and his team of on-water volunteers once again did a terrific job, while Kae Wattana and her regatta management team made the logistics look easy. Rolien highlighted the region’s stunning karst topography snapping away as the regatta’s official photographer, while Captain Shane Granger graciously lent his historical vessel Vega as the regatta’s media support boat.
The ‘Fun Regatta’ did indeed live up to its reputation with five nights of revelry and prize presentations, each night in a different tropical venue. The main sponsor of the event was DaVinci Yacht Charters, with Thai Sri Insurance and Neil Pryde also putting cash into the regatta pot, while a whole host of other official suppliers, local sponsors and supporters enable this regatta to keep going – and growing.

Recipe
Goong Sarong Deep Fried Prawns Rolled with Yellow Noodles Ingredients • 1/2 lb fresh prawns • 1/4 ib long life noodles (mee sou – usually available at shop with Chinese ingredients) • 1 tbsp chopped coriander root • 2 tbsp chopped garlic • 1 tsp ground black pepper • 1 cup vegetable oil • 2 tbsp Chinese plum sauce • 1 tbsp ketchup
Preparation Peel the prawns, but leave the hard tail flap. Remove the dark vein. Pound the coriander and garlic in a mortar until a paste is formed. This can also be done in a blender or food processor. Add a little oil if necessary. Add the pepper and the shrimp to the marinade, mix well and let marinate. Soak the noodles in the hot water until soft and then drain. Remove a shrimp from the marinade and wrap with one or more noodles until the shrimp is covered in a 'sarong'.
Drain on a paper towel and serve with small bowls of warm plum sauce and ketchup.
Repeat until all the shrimps have been covered. Fry in hot oil until the noodles are brown and crunchy.
This makes an attractive and unusual appetizer that will undoubtedly cause favorable comments. It's a delightful accompaniment to cocktails and conversation.

About the Chef Jaree Noisamlee Originally from Trang in the south of Thailand, Chef Jaree studied cookery at Pranakorntai University in Bangkok before joining the famous Mandarin Oriental. When Baan Rim Pa was established in 1990, she was asked to join the small team by Khun Das (Baan Rim Pa’s Managing Director) who had also been seconded from Mandarin Oriental and has been here ever since. Chef Jaree has always been a totally 'hands on' chef and continues to thrive in the kitchen making sure her team keep to the highest standards and quality expected of 'Royal Thai Cuisine'. She runs a very tight ship with a small team of 17 in the kitchen. In high season they can produce up to 700 dishes in one day which can be a major challenge for any team. Baan Rim Pa continues to win many awards including Thailand Tatler Best Restaurant and HAPA (Hospitality Asia Platinum Awards) 2011-2013. If you ask Chef Jaree why she is still at Baan Rim Pa, her reply is simple, "I work for good people and I love to cook Thai food and I love Baan Rim Pa."

Thai
'Location, location, location' as the saying goes. It doesn’t matter how good you are, if you’re not in the right location, forget it. Baan Rim Pa has become one of Thailand’s best-known restaurants, with a reputation stretching much further. It is perched on a cliff, with teak floors and the constant swish of the surf ‘downstairs’. There are some restaurants that just encapsulate the word ‘romantic’ and here, with Tommy Doyle playing classics on his grand piano, the sea breeze and the delicate aromas of world-class cooking in the air, this House by the Sea is one of the most romantic places to eat in Phuket. Situated on a rocky outcrop, overlooking the Andaman Sea, Baan Rim Pa prides itself in superb, authentic Royal Thai Cuisine, an ambience second to none and the most spectacular views on the island. Baan Rim Pa is the winner of the prestigious Wine Spectator Award of Excellence nine years in succession.

With its smart décor and casual ambience along with a superb menu of authentic Italian cuisine, this place to dine is destined to turn heads and attract attention. Kantok Restaurant
Take a journey into the home of real Thai food! Patong Seafood Restaurant was the first seafood restaurant to open in the then village-like Patong. It has changed very little from those days except for a major refurbishment after the 2004 tsunami in which major damage was sustained.
Kantok Restaurant offers you a natural and warm ambiance where traditional healthy food is matched with fun and exciting traditional dance. “The Kantok” table was originally used by the northern households welcoming guests of importance into their homes.
The restaurant was rebuilt as it was in original Thai style with open dining area and a high circular design ceiling. Only the freshest seafood is brought straight from the boat and market to give you the finest selections, which are on display – chilled and ready to eat. The kitchens at Patong Seafood Restaurant are a place to behold, where their chefs with simply so many years of experience, prepare your seafood and other Thai delicacies to perfection.
Our Thai set menu is attentively prepared, beginning with our Thai appetizer platter which includes items which continue to be a rare delicacy these days due to the delicate mix of ingredients to create an old and unique taste. A sampling of our main event including green curry with chicken, Mussaman curry and our famed red duck curry is something not to be missed. End your distinct culinary experience with a local Thai dessert.
The first thing that you will notice are the friendly staff. The smiles, the attentiveness and the helpfulness in making your choice are something you will appreciate and you will then know why many visitors and locals come back time and time again to enjoy this real taste of Thailand. Open daily 08:00-24:00 | Tel: +66 (0)76 341244
Enjoy our classical dance show on Monday/ Wednesday and Friday from 7 to 9 pm and is accompanied by a Thai traditional orchestra. People Profile
Marie-Laure Fleury General Manager of the Boathouse, explains how leading the transformation of Phuket’s iconic resort has provided an ideal chance to pursue her passion for hospitality while still enjoying some peaceful escapes.
Where are you from? I was born in Besançon, France. When I was one year old my family moved to Reims, the capital of Champagne, then we moved to Grenoble, a beautiful town at the foot of the French Alps. I did a lot of skiing. What did you do before you came to Phuket? While studying at a hotel school in Lausanne, Switzerland, I went to Beijing on an internship. Here, I was really bitten by the travel bug. My first job after graduation was at a group of restaurants in Paris, which I found to be narrow, monotonous and boring. I had friends in Hong Kong who convinced me to move there, so I booked a one-year open ticket and arrived in October, the worst time of year in Hong Kong to be looking for work! I was eventually hired by Kim Murphy at Food and Beverage Solutions (FABS) as assistant manager at one of the restaurants it operated. I ended up living and working in Hong Kong for more than a decade at such places as Langham hotel, The Peninsula head office, InterContinental Grand Stanford and Repulse Bay. I also worked for two years at The Peninsula in Shanghai with Peninsula Clubs and Consultancy where we were heading two projects, G’s Club Shanghai and 41 Hengshan Road in the late 1990s, which was an exciting time to be there. How did you find your way to Phuket? Though I loved Hong Kong, I'd got married and wanted to start a family and didn’t think it would be a good place to raise children. I moved to Bangkok to join The Sukothai as executive assistant manager, where I stayed for three years. I loved the job, but living in Bangkok was stressful. I started to feel a bit stuck living in the city and its traffic, especially now that we had young children. By chance, just one day before I was set to go to Phuket for a wedding, I got a call from a head-hunter about a position at Trisara. I was hired as Trisara’s resort manager in 2009, then moved to The Boathouse last year. I’d been to Phuket many times on holiday but had never worked at a resort before. There’s still stress with the job but it’s different here – you can walk out, look at the sea and get some perspective, unlike in Hong Kong where it’s a jungle of buildings and the pace of life is always 150 miles per hour. The Boathouse has recently reopened after an extensive renovation. What has been the response from guests? We didn’t know what to expect, but we’ve been very satisfied with the response. About 40% of our business is from returning guests. Among these I’d say 90% have said they love it. Of the remaining 10%, when they first see it they say that it’s lost its cosiness, but after a few days nearly all tell us they have come to love the new look, which is brighter and more open. What can returning guests expect to find that’s familiar and what’s new? Most of the staff is still here – we lost only about 10 out of 150 during the change of ownership and renovations. We still have Thai and French cuisine, but our award-winning wine cellar is even bigger and we’ve moved the kitchen upstairs to the ground floor so guests can see what’s happening in there. We’ve opened RE KÁ TA, a beach club with a pool that’s open to outside guests. It has its own menu with a strong focus on seafood and living cuisine. We’ve launched a series of events including Chill & Grill, a seafood barbecue to enjoy on a lazy Saturday afternoon, and a Sunday breakfast brunch. The new spa and boutique have already opened and a street-side cafe will soon be next. We'll continue to host celebrated guest chefs and wine dinners.
How does working in Phuket differ from your experience back home and in other countries? Every country has positive and negative aspects. In Hong Kong, there’s more efficiency but not so much service with a smile. Here, it might not be so efficient, but there’s always warm hospitality. I’ve had to learn to slow down. Being a perfectionist, I notice many things that could be improved, but it seems that for a lot of guests such details don’t matter. A number of guests, who are well travelled, have sent letters to say that this is the best place they’ve ever stayed. The staff here really go out of their way to help – it makes my job easier. Back in France, people are generally not interested in being helpful. There seem to be few women hotel General Managers. Why do you think that is? I think it’s simply due to the number of hours you have to put in. You’ve got to love it, have a passion for it, otherwise you’re not going to survive. I’m lucky to have a very understanding partner and great care for my children. I would be unhappy if I weren’t working. What advice would you give to women aspiring to be top-level managers in this field? It’s an extremely rewarding job. Never let the flame die. Whereabouts do you live in Phuket? I live in a house in Kathu with my husband and children aged three and five, which we’re enjoying after living in city skyscrapers for years. What's the most difficult thing about living in Phuket? The lack of cultural life. I miss going out to plays, the opera. I miss the good shopping, so sometimes I travel to Singapore or Hong Kong for a quick fix. What do you like most about living here? The weather is just amazing. And I love the fact that relaxation is really at your doorstep. You can go build sand castles at the beach.

Six Senses Signature – Ladies Pampering
The winner of several international awards including the Luxury Travel & Style Magazine, Australia as 10th Place Best Overseas Spa 2009, the luxuriously appointed spa at Evason Phuket & Bon Island is spread over three floors and sets a new standard in spa design. The Six Senses Spa provides a relaxing and revitalising experience as well as healing treatments and offers a comprehensive menu of signature treatments and specialist practitioner programmes for holistic wellness, rejuvenation and beauty. Using only natural products including therapeutic quality essential oils as the basis of the aromatherapy skincare products for most of the face and body treatments, skilled therapists create sensory journeys to rejuvenate and balance the senses. The aim of the spa is to offer clients a new kind of spa experience, one that is truly holistic, tailor-made and designed to rejuvenate and energise and ultimately provide the knowledge, tools and support that is required to create a better quality of life for all. It is our mission to deliver spa experiences that are both unique and memorable, and very much beyond expectations. The pyramid of six spheres used to identify Six Senses Spas, represents the philosophy that is fundamental to the human experience whereby the foundation spheres represent the three primary senses of sight, sound and touch. The second level balances upon this foundation by satisfying the more acute senses of taste and smell. The apex sphere symbolizes a sense of elation discovered only by balancing the first five – the unique experience of all senses elevated beyond expectations. Six Senses has created a body temple incorporating the principles of feng shui using fire and water, which delights beyond all expectations. The spa is open and spacious in design, utilising the beautiful outdoors for Asian style treatments and indoor treatment rooms for specialised and signature therapies. Couples treatment rooms with sunken Jacuzzis are available for mini day and day package getaways or a la carte treatments. All guests participate in a health assessment prior to the first treatment so that needs are identified and maximised results are achieved. A great importance is placed on the relaxation element of the spa experience and guests may stay in the spa to enjoy the sauna and herbal steam or rest in grass roofed salas. The Sense Spa endeavours to deliver experiences that are memorable and unique and and that exceed expectations. Discover a range of treatments to choose from and with advice from therapists, find options of body and beauty care, mind and body balancing and juice and herbal remedies.

Spa
The Royal Spa To experience The Royal Spa is to feel the true beauty of nature and reflect on the power of body, mind and spiritual connections.
The Royal Spa and Health Club In the heart of bustling Phuket Town lies a quiet haven of heavenly peace. With the continuous sounds of water, trickling, bubbling and steaming, and with the sweet fruity scents that fill the air, the being is enticed into a flowing stillness of body and mind. The Royal Spa and Health Club is a popular tropical day spa with both locals and visitors alike, which is managed by the Royal Spa Development and Management Company. With an excellent reputation in the spa development industry through its experience and attention to detail, the Royal Spa and Health Club offers a distinctly personal experience. Of the signature treatments, the Royal Stone Therapy is one that is particularly interesting. The Hot Stone massage technique, founded 5000 years ago, uses black volcanic stones, which are heated and placed on the body, producing a profound effect, stilling the mind and easing the body. Unlike many of the high-end spa complexes on the island, which market themselves exclusively to tourists, the reasonable prices and relaxed but professional staff at the Royal Spa, means that many local Thais, as well as tourists, are beginning to use the spa. This has helped to erase the often stiff, and over-formal atmosphere at many of Phuket’s spa resorts, giving the Royal Spa an ambience of authentic relaxation and pleasure. All the therapists working at the Royal Spa have been trained at the in-house 'Phuket Spa Academy', established in 2004, to provide a comprehensive spa training course. The curriculum and assessments provide a measurement of therapist expertise and knowledge within the Thai spa industry. Since then, the Royal Spa Development and Management Company have provided comprehensive and professional spa management, and development programs, for spa retreats throughout Thailand. Their aim is to provide a standard of service and expertise throughout the Thai spa industry, to ensure a high quality of service and standard of treatment, throughout Thailand. It truly offers the ‘one stop services for Thai spa business’ and a quality of relaxed professionalism, rarely found in luxury spa resorts. Right now The Royal Spa have 12 branches that are managed in resorts in Patong, Kata, Karon, Panwa, Ao Chalong and Phuket Town and you are welcome to experience our spas with us anytime. As a special for our 8th year anniversary, we offer 'BUY ONE GET ONE FREE' value.

Spa
Sukko Cultural Spa Sukko means "Beyond Happiness". My first feeling when I stepped through the impressivee gates of the Sukko spa was, "I’m in paradise". The Sukko staff are dressed beautifully in traditional Thai style and the spa design, influenced by the ancient Siamese capital, creates a haven of calm yet regal serenity. I felt I had left all my troubles behind.
A variety of 40 spa treatments – prepared by Sukko's certified Thai Herbalist and based on ancient Thai medical theory – is offered at Sukko, in packages lasting from 2 hours to 4 hours. Each package has a specific purpose and can be selected to suit your lifestyle or the way you feel on the day. These herbal recipes and procedures have been handed down through generations and are totally free of petrochemicals, synthetic perfumes or colouring. Some of the herbs and spices are grown in Sukko’s own herb garden and picked just for your treatment, ensuring they are as fresh as can be. I was pampered with the “Be Balanced” package; a 3 hour experience that left me feeling relaxed and refreshed. This three-treatment combination began with 30 minutes in the steam room and the Jacuzzi, followed by a Thai Turmeric Body Scrub designed to soften your skin and awakening your sense. The scrub was followed by Sukko Special Body Massage, performed by hands, using finger pressure on energy points and smooth strokes along energy lines. During the movements of the massage, the molecules of essential oils in Sukko elegant aromatic massage oils will be absorbed through the skin and into the bloodstream to benefit the nervous system and other parts of the body. “Is this pressure okay? Too strong? How are you feeling?” my therapist asked me from time to time. “Mmm…perfect…” were the only responses that seemed to suit how I felt. Sukko Spa’s restaurant, Suk Savoey Spa Cuisine, presents a unique concept: "Menu by Blood Types" and "Menu by Element". For those who want to exercise, the Suk Sanan Club provides a myriad of fitness opportunities, including ‘Rue Sri Dat Ton’ (the hermit self stretching), a traditional Thai exercise or, for something more strenuous, try ‘Thai Martial Arts’, a traditional and effective art of self-defense. Sukko Spa, one of Phuket’s most luxurious spas, is located on Chaofa Road just 30 minutes from Phuket International Airport, 10 minutes from Phuket Town, 30 minutes from Kata or Karon Beach and 20 minutes from Patong Beach. It is creatively designed in a contemporary Thai style, set amongst 15 rai (6 acres) of luxuriously landscaped tropical forest.

Chilled out by the soothing background music, my mind was filled with a peaceful wellbeing as I enjoyed the warm traditional welcome (again from Sukko culture) of the ‘Flower Floating Ritual’ – similar to ‘Loy Kratong’, where the idea is to float away past stresses and wish for luck and joy from that moment on.

Lemongrass House To visit this home of award-winning spa oils, creams, soaps and so many other exquisite products is a delight. The aromas are enchanting. At Lemongrass, you can enjoy a spa treatment to sample and choose from their huge range, then take home your choice to enjoy at your leisure. They even have a great range of kid’s spa products.
Bobby Duchowny studied aromatherapy – a healing art that promotes massage, when combined with specific herb and spice oils, as a method to reduce stress, boost energy and heal certain physical ailments – at the American Aromatherapy Association. Some years ago while on holiday in Thailand, he visited an organic farm in Petchaboon province and became interested in the natural healing properties of Thai herbs and spices. “I was particularly attracted to lemon grass as it was used in many popular Thai foods, as a medicine for stomach disorders and even as a repellent for mosquitoes,” he recalls. Bobby used lemon grass as his signature herb to create a line of essential oils, face and body creams, shower gels and bath crystals, which he and his wife Palita sold at Bangkok’s world-famous Weekend Market. What started, several years ago, as a modest enterprise has blossomed into a successful operation offering over 90 oils and a wide range of body care products through many outlets, as well as supplying many of Thailand’s top resorts and spas with aromatherapy oils. “Our advantage is that we produce the freshest spa products and our stock is never kept longer than three months; using fresh spa products can be likened to eating fresh food rather than processed food.”
Based on his years of experiences at some of the top spas in Southeast Asia, Bobby has developed a full line of healthy skin care products. For example, his hydrating face and body creams have 25 per cent aloe vera, white orchid and cucumber extracts. And he’s developed a revitalizing mineral muscle soak made from Andaman Sea salt crystals, blended with white orchid and chamomile extracts, to help draw out impurities and soothe and revive tense muscles. “People are sensitive to different scents at different times of day. It’s a good idea to get a variety of essential oils and experiment with what smells and feels good to you,” he says. “Our aromatherapy massage and body oils can be either uplifting or calming to the spirit. They’re carefully balanced handblended oils created by adding pure essential oils to nourishing, vitamin E enriched, sweet almond and jojoba base oils. Lemongrass has won many awards, including Condé Nast Hot List 2007, and has been featured in several top magazines, including Time Magazine’s “Best of Asia”. According to Time, “If you want to smell like no one else, try mixing a selection from the more than 90 natural scents at Lemongrass House.” Lemongrass House is located in Cherngtalay, Surin Beach and Chalong, where you can buy their full range of spa products at modest prices, making perfect gifts for friends and family who can enjoy the aromatic scents of Asia in the privacy of their homes – no matter where in the world they live. Welcome to the Phuket Hot List, a new series highlighting our favourite places around the island. This month, we’re cruising up to Phuket’s often-overlooked Mai Khao area in the island’s Far North to discover an emerging wining and dining scene and a lazy pace of life. Ten years ago you could explore the back roads of Mai Khao and see nothing but towering coconut trees, fields of pineapple, sleepy villages and the odd shrimp nursery and turtle hatchery. Small herds of water buffalo could be seen soaking in the mud or grazing the lush edges of marshlands, with their constant companions, white egrets, hopping alongside or catching a ride on their backs.
idyllic rural panorama remains. That same quiet Sunday drive, peaceful bike ride or lonely stroll around Mai Khao can still be enjoyed today as it could a decade ago, with the added option of wrapping up a day of exploration with a fabulous meal and cocktails. For now at least, Mai Khao’s been stirred but not yet shaken. And, yes, the buffalo do still roam.
These days, however, sprinkled among the orchards and endless casuarina-lined beach are some of the island’s – indeed the world’s – most acclaimed luxury resorts. But for the most part, Mai Khao’s

Hot eats
A more rustic, yet equally divine dining experience is found even further north. Just beyond the Phuket police checkpoint the road swerves westward and runs alongside a row of thatch-hut restaurants serving Thai seafood and ice-cold beer on a stretch of sands called Sai Kaew Beach. The largest and best known is Jakkajan Seafood, especially for its tasty mole crabs (also called sea cicadas), fried with batter or tossed into spicy Thai salads. These are usually caught right at the beach – fresh seafood at its finest! Any of the other restaurant shacks are worth a try, too, if only to indulge in the pleasure of dining while wriggling your toes in the sand.

Speaking of buffalo, far too many restaurants around Phuket serve meat that’s called beef but looks and tastes more like a buffalo that’s led a hard and famished life. Not so at Dok Bua restaurant in the Maikhao Dream Villa Resort, which is giving beef lovers something to cheer about with a special menu featuring marvellously marbled Wagyu beef every evening from 6pm to 10pm until the end of April. Tataki, consommé and rib eye are among the dishes on offer (from 650 baht), for an added touch of succulence to enjoy with those sunset views. Daytime diners could trek a bit further north to Maikhao Dream’s sister resort on Natai Beach, which has just launched a Sunday Brunch that includes heaps of giant lobsters and a chocolate fountain.

The SALA Phuket Resort, meanwhile, also aims to please the palate with its Fisherman’s Catch barbecue on the last Saturday of each month. With big swimming pools, rubber-tree shaded gardens, and wicker chairs to swing in under the tall casuarina trees, there’s more than a hint of barefoot luxury to indulge in here along with the fine food. This romantic tropical setting could also be why the Sala is so sought-after for weddings, with at least nine wedding events already booked this year. The Sala’s also teamed up with the neighbouring Anantara, JW Marriott and Renaissance resorts to turn Phuket’s north into something of a foodie paradise, with the North Phuket Culinary Arts Festival held last December and a Grapes & Grazing wine maker dinner series planned for four days this July. Details are yet to be revealed but will be posted soon on the website www.northphuket.com.

Hot Sight The island’s first link to the mainland, Sarasin Bridge, was built in 1967. Last year, a new bridge replaced it, but instead of tearing it down some enlightened officials decided to turn Sarasin into a pedestrian attraction. Converted into a walking promenade, the gleaming white bridge has already hosted local fairs and serves as a shining example of ‘reuse and recycle’ that both locals and visitors can enjoy for free. Be sure to walk over to the mainland and pick up some of the juicy pineapples on sale for as little as three for 10 baht. We hope this idea spreads south, since truly public spaces are hard to find in Phuket.
Hot Cause Holidaymakers aren’t the ones only to enjoy a welcome escape in Mai Khao. The award-winning Soi Dog Foundation, near Wat Mai Khao, runs the largest private shelter in Thailand for dogs that have been the victims of cruelty and abuse. Many of these dogs are adopted both locally and internationally. At last count, the foundation had sterilised and vaccinated over 36,000 dogs and cats on Phuket. It’s also at the forefront in pushing for animal welfare protection laws and combating the illegal export of stolen pets to Vietnam for dog meat. Soi Dog welcomes visitors from Monday to Friday, 8am-noon and 1-4pm. See www.soidog.org for further details.

The latest resort to find its way north is the Holiday Inn Phuket Mai Khao Beach Resort, only open since September but already racking up some rave reviews on Tripadvisor and elsewhere. Fans of the brand will find this a quiet complement to the long-running and popular Holiday Inn Patong. The Maikhao Dream Villa Resort, meanwhile, has also made a splash, literally, with each of its 22 villas having one (or two!) private pools plus a gigantic shared pool. It celebrates its first anniversary in April.

The Phuket Exhibition and Convention Centre has been on the brink of being built for nearly two decades, with the project falling victim to political squabbling time and time again. Finally, last year, a building design was completed, 2.6 billion baht in funding was approved, and a site in Mai Khao’s Tah Chat Chai area was selected. It looked like all systems go. But then a new national government was voted in, massive flooding hit central Thailand, and some officials began to raise questions about the project’s impact on the environment. There are conflicting reports on the reasons for the latest delays, but it looks as though Phuket’s convention centre dreams will remain entangled in Bangkok’s murky political vortex for some time to come. For those who long for an undisturbed patch of sand in Phuket, however, this may be a blessing in disguise.

Feature
From Russia with Love (or how I came in from the cold)
Growing up in the north-west of England during the Cold War era on a diet of Hovis and Emma Peel, my only thoughts of an Anglo-Russian alliance were based purely on James Bond’s liaison with Tatiana Romanova, the beautiful Soviet Embassy clerk in From Russia with Love. Having been coerced into believing she had been recruited by the KGB on a mission to seduce Bond, she had actually been fooled by Spectre into taking part in an assassination plot to kill him. Needless to say the suave British Secret Agent won the heart of the Russian beauty foiling the dastardly plot in the process. Just as well or we'd have missed 40 more years of 007 and he's still going strong. From that date on I imagined all Russian girls to look like Tatiana. And to be fair a lot of them do! I could never have imagined then that the day would arrive when I would be actively seeking a Russian alliance to assist with our increasing numbers of Russian clients. I had interviewed several Tatiana look-alikes in my quest for the right persons and as enticing as those long legged lovelies were I knew they would not be suitable for the job, well not the job I had in mind anyway. Finally I was introduced to Sergey, the owner of a company aimed purely at the Russian market, and a partnership arrangement was struck. Tropical Homes RE would supply the expertise in the Phuket real estate market and Sergey would give us the line of communication we needed to target the Russian market more effectively. In the deal we also got George, or Georgey, a very talented young Russian guy with an unparalleled knowledge of English, so much so we were all convinced he had been educated in the UK or US but no, he had lived on a diet of American and British movies and pop culture. The reason I am now relating this is because I have discovered I really like Russians. They’re funny and self deprecating and not at all the rude and arrogant people I had been led to believe. I think the problem many people have is when they encounter a Russian who can’t speak English and, as many cannot, the awkwardness caused by the lack of communication is taken as rudeness. This is ignorance caused by misunderstanding, a bit like the early explorers when they encountered the natives for the first time. Sure there will be some rude Russians but no more than there are rude English, and French, and Americans, and…..
Most definitely not she replied and when I caught up with her she said she didn’t trust Russians. When I recalled the episode to George he said he didn’t blame her. I think it’s a combination of reasons, one being the Russians are relatively new to the overseas real estate market, any real estate market for that matter, so they don’t believe a Russian agent can have a thorough knowledge and expertise in it, but maybe more importantly they are more than a little afraid of being ripped off! The problem lies in corruption in Russia. In Russia corruption starts at the top and filters down through society to the point it becomes part of everyday life. It has now become so endemic in Russian society nobody trusts anybody anymore. Russia’s not on its own in this respect of course but it seems a shame. Imagine a Brit or a Frenchman saying he preferred not to deal with a fellow countryman, it wouldn’t happen. More enlightening I have learned a great deal from my Russian chums in a few short months. I had been familiar with past tales of Russian people queuing for bread and groceries but I didn’t expect young George to remember it. As a young boy he would queue for bread every day and milk every 3 days carrying his 3 litre container with him because that was all his family were allowed to have. That was just 25 years ago. Today they are queuing to buy Premier League teams and Superyachts and are doing more than a little to fuel the residential market in Phuket. After centuries of oppression they, like their Chinese comrades, are seeking the luxuries of life we in the west have taken for granted and they are seeking it with a passion. I know there are those who are afraid of the Russian invasion, not the same invasion we were afraid of when I was the young man watching From Russia with Love, but of Phuket becoming overrun by Russians but I, as another farang, say welcome them with open arms. With 250 million of them within a 7 hour flight you better get used to it, they are here to stay!
Another thing I have discovered is that Russians don’t really trust, of all people, Russians! This was recently brought home to me a couple of weeks ago when I was contacted by a young lady from Moscow who spoke reasonably good English. She said I had been recommended to her so upon discovering she was Russian I suggested she might want to be accompanied by George, a fellow comrade so to speak.

Patong Beach has virtually no other developments that are within 80 meters to the beach and are available for outright ownership, making this a unique opportunity for investors. The location will not only strengthen the ability to rent the units once completed, but will also strengthen the potential for capital growth as there are few locations that are as close to the beach as this project.
The quality is seen by its attention to detail in the design components of the resort, including the tropical architecture and the contemporary interior décor. The individual units have large beds and wardrobes, pantry and dining facilities, spacious bathrooms with tube and showers, a lounge are with a couch and entertainment center plus a writing desk.

FOREIGNERS WORKING IN THE KINGDOM: A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THE LAW GOVERNING WORK PERMITS
Thailand is one of Asia’s premier destinations for foreign investors and expatriate workers. Like most countries, however, employers and foreign employees must comply with a set of laws governing the employment of nonThai nationals in the Kingdom. This article will provide an overview of those laws, and specifically, the rules governing work permits. Work Permits Generally Thailand’s primary law governing foreigners working in the Kingdom is the Alien Working Act (2008) (the “AWA”). The AWA requires that nearly all foreigners be issued a work permit by the Department of Employment of the Ministry of Labor in order to legally work in Thailand. Only diplomatic staff and those granted special permission by the Thai government, and other special personnel are exempted from the requirement. To apply for a work permit, the foreigner must either have legal residence in Thailand, or be authorized to stay in the country temporarily (e.g. pursuant to a non-immigrant business visa). Alternatively, an employer in Thailand may apply for a pre-approved work permit on behalf of a foreign employee while that employee remains outside of Thailand. Importantly, in most cases, a foreigner will not be issued a regular work permit if he or she entered the country via a tourist visa. A typical easily understandable example of a quandary relating to temporary stays and work permits is that of a visiting foreign musician or band planning to perform in Thailand. Such activities are generally deemed work, and require the appropriate permits. Work permits are valid for a maximum of two years. However, permits are often issued for one year until the foreigner has been working continuously for a number of years and the employer can prove the employee’s income and/or tax payments meet a certain threshold, and that the position is on a managerial level. In such cases, the authorities may be more generous with the time they grant. Before the work permit expires, the foreign worker must apply for renewal, and can continue to work until a decision is made on the renewal. It should be noted, however, that prior to the first issuance of a work permit, the foreigner cannot work in anticipation of being granted a permit. If employment is terminated, the permit must be returned to the relevant authority where the employer is situated. Moreover, an employer is obligated to notify the local authority upon the termination of the foreign employee. If the employer fails to do so, the authorities may not approve new work permits for new foreign employees.
Employer requirements Employers that wish to employ foreign nationals must also meet certain requirements. Thai-incorporated employers, for example, must have a minimum paid-up capital of 2,000,000 THB. Generally, one foreign worker can be employed per 2,000,000 THB in paid up capital, but such companies may only employ a maximum of 10 foreigners. Foreign-incorporated employers operating in Thailand can employ foreigners if they remit and invest a minimum of 3,000,000 THB in Thailand. Such employers are permitted to employ one foreigner for every 3,000,000 THB. However, if a foreign employee is legally married to a Thai spouse, the capital and/or investment requirements are decreased. The 10 work permit-limit may be exceeded under special conditions. For example, more than 10 foreign nationals may be employed if the employer paid at least 3,000,000 THB in taxes in the preceding year; or, the employer employs at least 100 Thais; or, the employer works in the tourist sector and brought at least 5,000 tourists to Thailand the previous year; or other limited circumstances. Additionally, there are special provisions for employment of foreign employees who have certain specialized skills under Board of Investment (“BOI”) rules, or in specific industries. However, it is important to note that an employer must genuinely employ Thai workers. Employing Thai workers under ambiguous titles, such as “advisers”, or using nominee employees through accounting or other companies, may draw scrutiny and investigation for illegal activities by the authorities. Conclusion Work permits are an important, but often overlooked or misunderstood component to doing business in Thailand. The statutory penalties for working without a permit are stiff – violations are considered criminal acts, and may include fines and even prison. Moreover, companies that hire foreign workers in contravention of the law may run afoul of the authorities, and have difficulty continuing to do doing business in the Kingdom. As such, it is vital that both employees and employers be aware of the regulations governing work permits and the legal employment of foreign nationals.
Foreign workers are only permitted to conduct work within the field and position that is stated on the work permit. Moreover, a foreigner is only allowed to work for the employer that is stated on the permit and in a specific geographic location. Any change must be reported to the authorities. If a foreigner is found to be working in contravention to what is stated on the permit, the authorities can issue a revocation and the employee will be subject to a fine. Criteria for Work Permit Approval Under Ministerial Regulations issued by the Ministry of Labor, there are certain criteria that authorities must consider when deciding to issue a work permit. Some of these criteria include the political, religious, economic, and social situation in Thailand at the time of application; the availability of Thais to perform the work; and the overall benefit to Thailand by issuing the work permit. Examples of benefits include, among others, creating employment opportunities for Thais; and contributing to the country’s economic development.

View Points If you are looking for a change from the beach, why not check out the views from Phuket's hilltop view points? You will experience magnificent vistas, cool breezes and most view points have refreshments available. Don't forget your camera. Windmill View Po
int
Karon Viewpoint: Sometimes referred to as the Three Bay Viewpoint. View point is located between Nai Harn and Kata noi Beaches. This is a very tastefully developed facility with a Thai-style sala, which offers superb views on several levels. From here Kata Noi, Kata and Karon beaches can be seen and out to sea is Koh Poo Island. It is one of the island's best views. How to get there: Kata Viewpoint is located along the road between Kata Beach and Nai Harn Beach, just 5 kilometers from Kata Beach.
Phromthep Cape (Laem Phromthep):
Rang Hill: Rang Hill lies to the northwest of Phuket City. The hilltop has been landscaped into a park and fitness facilities are offered. A winding tree-lined road takes you right to the summit where a sala offers shade during the day. Once there you can enjoy views of the city and beaches on the south and southwest of the island. Try a visit at night when the lights of the city are like a million diamonds scattered on night blue silk.
This is the most popular and largest of all the view points. The area has been developed to offer extensive views over the sea and there are walking paths from the cliffs to the water's edge for the adventurous. The sunsets are absolutely breathtaking and never the same two days running. If you are romantically inclined this is the place to come in the evenings and hold hands as the setting sun paints the evening skies in towering kaleidoscopes of light and shade. On top of Promthep Cape is a very pretty structure, the Kanchanaphisek Lighthouse which doubles as a museum. It was constructed in 1996. If you want to check the times of sunsets, ring the Phuket Meteorological & Radio Station on +66 (0)76 211494. How to get there: Phromthep Cape is a headland on the extreme southern end of Phuket about 19 kilometres from Phuket City. You can drive there via Chalong Junction along Highway 4024 to Rawai Beach, and then follow the signs for 2 kilometres.
Windmill View Point:
Khao Kad 360° Viewpoint: Khao Kad offers wonderful views of the Andaman Sea beaches and neighbouring islands from a different perspective – from Cape Panwa in Vichit district. Sunsets are on a par with Promthep. Visitors are faced with a stiff climb up 138 steps. Once there the fresh breezes and tranquil surroundings are a sufficient reward. The viewpoint has good parking facilities and services.
As the name would suggest this hilltop boasts a modern windmill – the only one on the island. It can be found on the south of Phuket between Nai Harn and Promthep. This isolated spot offers superb views of the tiny Ya Nui Beach and the main Nai Harn Beach. There are always boats moored off both beaches and in December the anchorages really come alive as the Phuket King's Cup Regatta gets under way. How to get there: Drive from Nai Harn Beach towards the highest hilltop and take the first road on the right. You will spot the windmill on your right hand side.
How to get there: Take Sakdidet Road as far as Baan Muang Thong (Muang Thong Village) or follow the signs to Makham Bay and turn right just before arriving at Panwa Cape. The turning is well signposted.

Economy-Class Syndrome and Deep Vein Thrombosis I spend a lot of time flying cramped in economy class seating, and lots of people ask me about economy-class syndrome or its proper name, deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Anyone can get economy-class syndrome, you do not need to be in economy class at all. People in business and first class have developed it as it’s related to low cabin pressure, low humidity and dehydration. Relative humidity is 20-25% in the Arabian deserts, while optimum comfort is around 50% humidity. In-flight cabin humidities gradually fall on long-distance flights and in many cases can be as low as 1%. That’s pretty dry, and also the reason why people do not urinate much on a long flight unless they have drank plenty of liquids. This low humidity, dehydration and low cabin pressure coupled with your blood getting thicker and your veins constricting because of the dehydration, and your heart rate slowing and blood pooling because of gravity in your legs and lack of exercise, all contribute to getting a DVT. You can also get DVT’s from prolonged train or car travel and it’s more common than initially thought. London’s Heathrow airport has reported one passenger death a month. In Australia, a law firm has filed 1,000 DVT claims against six airlines in one year.

Narita airports records show that on average, 100-150 passengers are treated for DVT immediately upon arrival each year or which 3-5% dies. Even former Vice President Dan Quayle nearly died from a DVT during a 1994 flight and we see quite a few cases from travelers here in Phuket. DVT, blood clots, form in the deep veins of the legs, usually between the ankle and upper calf. They can occur in a matter of only a few hours. Problems really happen when the clot breaks off, usually as the plane descends or when it decompresses and the clot travels through the bloodstream and obstructs a vessel in the lungs, restricting blood flow. This condition is called pulmonary embolism which seriously damages lung tissues and causes poor lung function, which can be fatal. The time taken for the clot to travel from the legs to the lungs may take days, even weeks. Taking this time frame into account leads researchers to believe that even more people die from DVT than what the current statistics are showing.

If you’re going to be in a leg cramped position for several hours, you are at risk. The risk increases if you are obese or tall. Smokers and anyone with a history of leg clots or recent leg or pelvic surgery are also more prone to developing a DVT, as are the elderly. If you have varicose veins or a history of venous problems, the chances of developing a DVT continue to escalate. If you are planning to travel and your legs are going to be cramped, exercise. Those funny cartoons that are shown with the little man or the air hostess stretching their legs will get you started. Better still, get up out of your seat and walk around for a few minutes every hour. When flying drink lots of liquids to avoid dehydration which causes the blood to thicken and the vessels to constrict. Avoid alcohol and coffee, as this will contribute to the dehydration. You can also take an aspirin before the flight and every 6 hours during the flight or if you have considerable risk factors, discuss this with your doctor who may give you a shot of Heparin before the flight. Heparin is
an anticoagulant which stops the blood from clotting. Researchers also recommend wearing compression stockings, particularly for those at risk. These garments help put pressure on the leg muscles and assist in retuning blood flow to the heart have been shown to help minimize the risk significantly. Usually, the development of a DVT will not be obvious. There maybe pain and warmth in the lower legs or a prickly sensation in the legs. Swelling of the feet or legs may occur, but this occurs in most people on long flights who are not mobile anyway, and swelling of the legs, feet and ankles can be a normal response to the humidity, dehydration and just being inactive for a long period of time. If you develop shortness of breath during or up to a week after a flight, this could be an indication that a clot has moved to the lungs and a pulmonary embolism has developed. If shortness of breath occurs, don’t delay seeking emergency medical assistance.
