We all know one of those places… they never advertise but they’re busy. Why? ‘Word of mouth’. People tell their friends, “You must try..” and the word spreads. In this monthly column, we spread the word further about the great-value nooks and crannies that we know about on Phuket.

9am-11pm. Chalong Circle, towards Wine Connection, 200 metres from the police station. This lovely restaurant offers both Thai & international cuisines. The fish with the spicy som tam & the light sandwiches are wonderful . There is an indoor spot for the coffee & smoothies as well as a small outdoor garden . The owners are very sweet and welcoming, always ready for a chat. Reasonable prices & good ambience .

It is decorated with handmade coral necklaces and bracelets and there old school bicycles for rent upfront. The nicest spot in this tiny café is the big sofa with plants around it and there’s good Wi-Fi as well . Hot Tha i coffee and freshly made juices are their speciality along with crab curry (gaeng poo) and more ... A variety of vegetarian dishes are also available . 81 B1

A one-stop shop for many cheap eats, including Hokkien noodles, haw mok , kanom jeen , just about any kind of rice dish , baked goods, sweets, and excellent massaman curry. Deepfried crab meat balls served with plum dipping sauce are a recommended dish . Their food is displayed in the counter so all you need to do is point at what you want. Opens in the morning and gets busy at lunchtime .

The owner is a lovely guy and his happy personality is infectious. There are usually live bands and occasional parties on the weekends. You can pick up an instrument and play along as you wish and with saxophone and guitar in the air it makes for a relaxing night out. Buffet dinners are sometimes offered , depending on the occasion . This place really has a family touch to it and it's the hangout spot for musicians from Route 68.

This restaurant has passed the test of time and is well known among locals. Opens late and closes early, its signature dish is mee ao-kae (ao kae noodles) - Hokkien noodles or Phuket white rice noodles, stir-fried with eggs to give them a rich taste . It's cheap and a great way to get a typical taste of Phuket. include it in

Andaman Cruises is a synonym for "Phuket‘s Most Exciting & Stylish Contemporary Luxury Yachts" and the leading luxury yacht charter company on the island. The fleet includes seven vessels in total: the flagship MY Olympia 76, a 23-metre fly-bridge motor yacht for up to 20 guests, or the MY Mayavee 60, a 19-metre motor yacht of the renowned English family of Princess, for example. Due to the top standard of the yachts as well as the outstanding service onboard, Andaman Cruises is highly appreciated by international stars such as football player Cristiano Ronaldo, UEFA President Michel Platini, the German top model Heidi Klum and Hollywood actor Dolph Lundgren. In addition to the private luxury charters the company is also focused on yacht incentives. Among the corporate clients are BMW and Panasonic for instance. Andaman Cruises hosted their management incentives onboard the yachts. “Our company stands for luxury

experiences, lifestyle and premium hospitality. Today, people of all nationalities come from all over the world to enjoy the peaceful and pristine waters of Phuket and the Andaman Sea,” says General Manager Christian Schwind. The archipelagos of the Andaman Sea and its maritime national parks are renowned as some of the most beautiful yachting grounds in the world. Many people say that there is no better experience than to go onboard a yacht and see the breathtaking scenery of limestone rocks, white sand beaches and crystal clear waters around Phuket and the South of Thailand, including Phang Nga Bay and the coastline of Krabi. Guests are able to discover unique destinations and unspoiled spots. And a luxury charter with Andaman Cruises is the most exclusive and most personalised way to do that. These yachts offer all the benefits and facilities of a floating villa – luxury, comfort and privacy.

The Royal Langkawi Yacht Club (RLYC) was established through the enthusiastic efforts of Founder Chairman and 1st Commodore, the late Y.A.M. Tunku Tan Sri Abdullah Tuanku Abdul Rahman to consolidate sailing sports in Malaysia and in the Asian region. The RLYC has something for everyone: trendy restaurants serving international and local fare; luxury boat charters; poolside barbeques, and a modern 200-berth marina that accommodates mega yachts of up to 60m. Affiliations with other regional regattas resulted in the RLYC hosting its own regatta organised at Langkawi. This brought about the advent of the Royal Langkawi International Regatta (RLIR). RLIR was inaugurated in 2003 by the Former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Y.A.B. Tun Abdullah Hj. Ahmad Badawi. The regatta has grown into one of Asia’s largets and is part of the Asian Yachting Circuit Grand Prix. The idea for the RLIR stemmed from the desire of the RLYC to develop a new world-class international event in Langkawi. The aim was to attract sailors from Hong Kong, the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand and in time, develop into an event that would attract the cream of the world’s yachtsmen. Over the past 12 years, the RLIR has attracted top-class sailors and there has been a tremendous growth in the number of international registered class yachts. There has also been a tremendous increase in the total number of participants, both local and international.

The uniqueness of RLIR is that its races are held in the idyllic waters of Langkawi, including a day of races at Kuah Harbour as well as offshore racing. In addition, RLIR is one of the few regattas in Southeast Asia that provides full berthing facilities throughout the week of racing. The duty-free status enjoyed by Langkawi Island is also another good reason for yachts to participate as it provides a perfect opportunity for provisioning and shopping before departing to the next port of call/race circuit. The Prime Minister’s Challenge Trophy – the most sought-after prize – will be presented to the winning team from the Racing Class yachts, followed by the LADA-IRC Challenge Trophy, the Langkawi Sports Boat Trophy, and the Malaysian Multihull Challenge Cup, all prestigious titles to race for. The Tunku Abdullah Sportsmanship Award, introduced in 2009, will be presented to the best team, both on water and land, in memory of the late Founding Chairman and the first Commodore of the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club, Tunka Tan Sri Abdullah Almarhum Tuanka Abdul Rahman. The 13th Edition of the Royal Langkawi International Regatta is scheduled to take place from January 12 to 17, 2015. IMAGE asia is proud to support Royal Langkawi International Regatta as a Media Partner for the second year running.

GUNNING FOR FOREIGN YACHTS?

Gunning for

foreign yachts? rom 1 October 2014, the Phuket Marine Office requires all non-Thai-flagged yachts in Phuket waters to be fitted with a AIS Class B transceiver. Not a bad idea, from a safety perspective, if you’re cruising in busy waters – but Phuket? The officials say it’s about safety, but when Thai boats are not required to fit AIS, we wonder how the safety angle works.

F

Take a look at the chart here, showing data extracted from the website www.marinetraffic.com, a site that displays all vessels using AIS, and you’ll see that in the waters around southern Phuket there were just three boats showing at 07:30 on 16 October. (Two

are tankers standing off, and one is a tanker approaching, the Ao Makham petroleum terminal). The situation had not changed at 11:44 on the same day. Three! And no other boats anywhere near the whole of Phuket island. Where were all the fishing boats, commercial speedboats, charter yachts and more buzzing around those busy waters? Not required to have AIS. So, let’s be clear. It's not about safety – it can only be about tracking visiting yachts… for 'security' purposes. Check out the advertisement below for where to get your AIS gear supplied and fitted quickly in order to comply. You have 10 days from when you checked in. While on the subject of recent changes affecting yachts in the area, one of southern Phuket's favourite anchorages – Ao Yon – is now out of bounds to all boats! An exclusion zone has been created around the Royal Thai Navy base adjacent to the bay, which completely blocks access to the anchorage (see chart). Just prior to announcement of the zone, the harbour department instructed all yachts anchored or moored in the bay to clear out – without notice. And finally (according to information available at the time of going to print), the much-vaunted Chalong Bay Marina that has been plagued by major breakages and weather damage has been closed and all vessels therein "evicted" pending repairs, renovation and the construction of a proper breakwater. Boats are prohibited from anchoring or mooring within 200 metres of the marina during the renovation and construction, although boats will be permitted to enter temporarily to access the recently-opened one-stop service centre, which is based at the troubled marina. There is a tendency for rules and regulations to change from time to time, so visiting yachts are recommended to obtain the latest information to be sure they are in compliance.

On entering Phuket waters you have 10 days to have your yacht fitted with an AIS transponder.

VSET is a ‘restaurant at its extraordinary best’. VSET, pronounced ‘ViSate’, means ‘extraordinary’ in Thai.

Kan Eang, meaning "feel at ease", invites you to unwind with the soothing sounds of the sea & a stunning view of Chalong Bay. Savour freshly caught seafood, Thai delights & selected Japanese dishes.

'Location, location, location' as the saying goes. It doesn’t matter how good you are, if you’re not in the right location, forget it.

Baluchi is in the heart of Patong and in Karon, yet their relaxed atmosphere, with soft background Indian music, creates a great ambience perfect for either family dining or entertaining clients.

It’s the first gastronomic restaurant at Chalong pier and has a naturally-thatched roof, quaint interior and an open kitchen where you can see the talented team working on the menu. Whether you prefer indoor or outdoor seating, this intimately proportioned venue serves up delicious fare in a homey atmosphere. VSET’s creations combine established methods with local flare and creativity producing a stellar menu. Notable dishes include: Phuket lobster salad, foie gras parfait, cognac-flamed lobster bisque, Australian lamb cutlet, red snapper steak and honey-glazed pork belly. These only touch the surface, while a fine wine list adds an essential touch and a tantalizing selection of desserts rounds it all off. VSET is centered on the palate, but it’s how everything fits together that makes this a truly extraordinary place. Baan Rim Pa is one of Thailand’s best-known restaurants, with a reputation stretching much further. It's perched on a cliff, with teak floors and the swish of the surf ‘downstairs’. There are some restaurants that just encapsulate the word ‘romantic’ and here, with Tommy Doyle playing classics on his grand piano, the sea breeze and the delicate aromas of world-class cooking in the air, this House by the Sea is one of the most romantic places to eat in Phuket. On a rocky outcrop, overlooking the Andaman Sea, Baan Rim Pa prides itself in superb, authentic Royal Thai Cuisine, an ambience second to none and the most spectacular views on the island. Baan Rim Pa is the winner of the prestigious Wine Spectator Award of Excellence nine years in succession. On the coast road just north of Patong www.baanrimpa.com

They take pride in using only fresh, authentic Indian spices, freshly ground in their kitchen and fresh (not frozen) meat. Homemade paneer (cottage cheese) and yoghurt, tandoori kebabs, naan and rotis, Mughlai curries and the best Indian long grain basmati rice dishes are just some of their specialties. One can taste the most mouth-watering tandoori kebabs in town, not to mention the variety of breads baked freshly in the tandoor or a delicious variety of prawn, chicken, mutton or vegetable biryani. Baluchi is the only award winning Indian restaurant on the island, serving authentic Indian cuisine using original ingredients imported from India. Baluchi Karon opens 18:30 to 23:30 every day except Saturdays.

I have come to realize that this is in effect ‘affordable therapy’ and can be introduced into the lobby or rooms of a hotel dedicated to colour and vibrancy.

When I asked my father how he keeps coming up with new ideas, he told me he often gets asked this question and responds with, “The answer is simple: survival instinct bites me on my backside and demands that I go forward. When a company grows, as we have, there is always a new project demanding focus and attention.” Paul Ropp has an innovative way of looking at creativity, likening it to a broken arm in a cast: When it’s not in use the muscles atrophy and weaken, however when it’s being exercised constantly it can only get stronger. So I asked him what was next for the Paul Ropp brand, after fashion, and he

gave me a sneak peak of his future venture: the Paul Ropp Art Hotel. This pioneering idea is going to run in line with the themes of his many stores far and wide: a place where people can walk in and smile. The hotel will be decorated head to toe in Paul Ropp attire. Every object, from wall-hangings to bedspreads, to carpets, to furniture, and even doors and decorative art will be designed and made by Paul Ropp. He states, “I have come to realize that this is in effect ‘affordable therapy’ and can be introduced into the lobby or rooms of a

Lemongrass founder, Bobby Duchowny, studied aromatherapy – a healing art that promotes massage, when combined with specific herb and spice oils, as a method to reduce stress, boost energy and heal certain physical ailments – at the American Aromatherapy Association. Some years ago while on holiday in Thailand, he visited an organic farm in Petchaboon province and became interested in the natural healing properties of Thai herbs and spices. “I was particularly attracted to lemon grass as it was used in many popular Thai foods, as a medicine for stomach disorders and even as a repellent for mosquitoes,” he recalls. Bobby used lemon grass as his signature herb to create a line of essential oils, face and body creams, shower gels and bath crystals, which he and his wife Palita sold at Bangkok’s world-famous Weekend Market. What started, several years ago, as a modest enterprise has blossomed into a successful operation offering over 90 oils and a wide range of body care products through many outlets, as well as supplying many of Thailand’s top resorts and spas with aromatherapy oils.

25 percent aloe vera, white orchid and cucumber extracts. And he’s developed a revitalizing mineral muscle soak made from Andaman Sea salt crystals, blended with white orchid and chamomile extracts, to help draw out impurities and soothe and revive tense muscles. “People are sensitive to different scents at different times of day. It’s a good idea to get a variety of essential oils and experiment with what smells and feels good to you,” he says. “Our aromatherapy massage and body oils can be either uplifting or calming to the spirit. They’re carefully balanced hand-blended oils created by adding pure essential oils to nourishing, vitamin E enriched, sweet almond and jojoba base oils. Lemongrass has won many awards, including Condé Nast Hot List 2007, and has been featured in several top magazines, including Time Magazine’s “Best of Asia”. According to Time, “If you want to smell like no one else, try mixing a selection from the more than 90 natural scents at Lemongrass House.” Lemongrass House is located in Cherngtalay and Surin Beach, where you can buy their full range of spa products at modest prices, making perfect gifts for friends and family who can enjoy the aromatic scents of Asia in the privacy of their homes – no matter where in the world they live.

“Our advantage is that we produce the freshest spa products and our stock is never kept longer than three months; using fresh spa products can be likened to eating fresh food rather than processed food.” Based on his years of experiences at some of the top spas in Southeast Asia, Bobby has developed a full line of healthy skin care products. SPA & BEAUTY

Sukko Cultural Spa

CHAMPION BODYBUILDER “The Best Spa In Southeast Asia”

Wilaiporn Wannaklang

Sukko means "Beyond Happiness". My first feeling when I stepped through the impressive gates of Sukko Spa was, "I’m in paradise". The Sukko staff are dressed beautifully in traditional Thai style and the spa design, influenced by the ancient Siamese capital, creates a haven of calm yet regal serenity. I felt I had left all my troubles behind.

Wilaiporn Wannaklang (Jum) is a 39-year-old single mum. But she’s also a champion bodybuilder, winner of many awards. For someone so physically developed she’s disarmingly soft spoken and full of surprises. We chatted at Vijitt Resort in Rawai – the sponsor of the Phuket Classic bodybuilding competition 2014. Where are you from? I’m from Lopburi and have been here in Phuket for four years now. What made you decide to come and live here? Well, at first I was thinking about working as a personal trainer in Bangkok, Pattaya or Chiang Mai. But I heard that there were a lot of foreigners in Phuket and this sort of work is popular with foreigners. Thai people figure you should not pay for personal trainers! When I came here I thought wow! This is my sort of place; the social life, the people, and everything. However none of the gyms wanted to hire me so I went freelance and now I make good money.

Chilled out by the soothing background music, I was filled with a peaceful wellbeing as I enjoyed the warm traditional Sukko welcome of the ‘Flower Floating Ritual’ – like ‘Loy Kratong’, where the idea is to float away past stresses and wish for luck and joy from that moment on A variety of 40 spa treatments – prepared by Sukko's certified Thai Herbalist and based on ancient Thai medical theory – is offered at Sukko, in packages lasting from 2 to 4 hours. Each package has a specific purpose and can be selected to suit your lifestyle or the way you feel on the day. These herbal recipes and procedures have been handed down through generations and are totally free of petrochemicals, synthetic perfumes or colouring. Some of the herbs and spices are grown in Sukko’s own herb garden and picked just for your treatment, ensuring they are as fresh as can be.

How did you first get into bodybuilding? Before I started all this I was just 38 kilos and after only three months I started to develop and entered competitions and saw other people’s bodies and thought I’d like to be like that, and I loved the social life. What sort of diet do you have? At first it was very difficult as I didn’t know much about anything and people gave me all sort of advice. But eventually I made my own decisions and I discovered that I have a fast metabolism and burn off food very quickly. I can even eat chocolate and ice cream, whereas for other people (who want to stay in shape) that could be a problem. Not for me! But then I thought, if I can control my weight I can do this for other people, too.

I was pampered with the “Be Balanced” package; a 3-hour experience that left me feeling relaxed and refreshed. This 3-treatment combination began with 30 minutes in the steam room and the Jacuzzi, followed by a Thai Turmeric Body Scrub designed to soften your skin and awaken your senses. The scrub was followed by Sukko Synergy Body Massage (see description opposite).

Where do you live in Phuket? I stay around Nai Harn. Why Nai Harn? At first I lived near Dao Roong but it was too… crowded and the traffic was terrible. But I started going to Rawai gym and thought, why not live around here? It’s close to the beach and there are many nationalities here and most of all it’s not too crowded.

“Is this pressure okay? Too strong? How are you feeling?” my therapist asked me from time to time. “Mmm…perfect…” were the only responses that seemed to suit how I felt. Sukko Spa’s restaurant, Suk Savoey Spa Cuisine, presents a unique concept: "Menu by Blood Types" and "Menu by Elements". For those who want to exercise, the Suk Sanan Club provides a myriad of fitness opportunities, including ‘Rue Sri Dat Ton’ (the hermit self stretching), a traditional Thai exercise or, for something more strenuous, try ‘Thai Martial Arts’, a traditional and effective art of self-defense.

Red Chili Restaurant The philosophy behind Thai cuisine is that food is an everyday medicine for health and longevity. Rich in spices and medicinal herbs – with anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory benefits to name just a few – the Thai and international buffet at Red Chili Restaurant promises a fun and healthy dining experience with a view of Phuket’s Big Buddha and the surrounding lush green scenery.

1st place - 2012 & 2014 World Bodybuilding & Physique Federation (WBPF) Women Bodybuilding (50kg class).

What do you like the most about living in Phuket? Well, there are a lot of foreigners and I learn a lot from them. You could say that I learn something new every single day here. Also the Thai people here accept a lot more than, say, in the countryside. You can see that someone like me is sort of special but Thai people here don’t stare at me like in the provinces.

Do you have children? Yes, the first one is studying in Bangkok at university, while the younger one is with my mum. My husband has passed away.

Some of Wilaiporn's achievements

Do you drive a car? And if so what type? I’ve only been driving a few months: I drive a Ford as it’s good value. It was a good deal.

What’s the hardest/most frustrating thing about living here? Foreigners who have lived here for a long time but who have not really learned much about our culture. Some people have learned all their Thai culture from uneducated bar girls but what do they know? You can’t teach what you don’t know.

Lunch Buffet ( Daily 11am – 2pm) THB 220 Dinner Buffet (Daily 5.30 – 9pm) THB 300

How do you evaluate success? Well, I have found success through bodybuilding and I think that when other people appreciate that achievement I think that’s success. When I first became a bodybuilder my family didn’t accept it – it was contrary to their traditional view of what a Thai lady should be and they never expected me to be successful at it.

Are they proud of you? Oh for sure!

1st place - 2012 Siam Classic Women Bodybuilding Open 1st place - Women’s Bodybuilding class of the Mr. Thailand competition (three years in a row). What do you do with your free time, if you have any? I really don’t have any! Do you travel a lot? Yes! I’ve just been in Macau where I competed and won first prize in the Asian Championships. What’s your favourite place in the world? Thailand, but I’m open to other places that may be even better. Maybe somewhere in Europe I don’t know, but for the moment it’s Thailand.

If each of these systems is installed separately, administration and training can burden a company or property owner. article which is likely to be used for, or has been obtained through the commission of, an offence or whose possession constitutes an offence. (The Criminal Procedure Code, Section 93)

Is that legal Mr. Police Officer?

Are the rules different for stopping and searching a vehicle? Can the Police just randomly stop vehicles? If it is a public or private vehicle, the police can stop and search in accordance with the same rules as Section 93.

C

If a woman is pregnant and on the way to the hospital to have a baby, can the police stop the private car if the private car is going too fast to get to the hospital? Yes, the police can stop the private car if the private car is going too fast (Land Traffic Act 1979 Section 67). The driver must not exceed the speed limit prescribed by regulations regardless of the circumstances.

ertain rules and regulations in Thailand are centered on ensuring that false statements are not made about the Police and it is quite right to ensure that an institution is not unnecessarily damaged when carrying out its important duties and functions. However, many ordinary civilians do not understand or have access to the law, to rules and regulations relating to the Police or to criminal acts, nor how criminal cases are supposed to be handled in accordance with law. Therefore it is worth looking at a summary of the types of questions and scenarios that civilians might encounter:

If a cement truck driver has an accident, is it the duty of the police to carry out a blood test for alcohol and drugs? Yes, an investigating officer shall, so far as is possible, collect every kind of evidence for the purpose of ascertaining all facts and circumstances in respect of the alleged offence, identifying the offender and collect evidence to assist in proving the guilt or innocence of the accused. (The Criminal Procedure Code, Section 131)

Which general law provides powers to the Police? The Criminal Procedure Code. Under which law can a Police Officer decide to stop and question or search a member of the public? A search may not be conducted upon the body of any person in a public place, save where it is performed by an administrative or police official when there is a 'reasonable suspicion' that such person is carrying with him any article which is likely to be used for, or has been obtained through the commission of, an offence or whose possession constitutes an offence. (The Criminal Procedure Code, Section 93) Are there different rules for day and nighttime searches? Yes, a search in a private place must be conducted in the daytime, save: 1. Where the initial search has been processed in daytime but it is not yet completed, in which case the search may be completed at nighttime. 2. Where there is utmost exigency, or where there is an exception permitted by another law, under which the search may be conducted at nighttime. 3. Where the search is for the purpose of arresting an extremely bad person or a seriously wanted outlaw, it may be performed at nighttime, but special permission of the court must be obtained according to the criteria and procedure prescribed in the regulations of the President of the Supreme Court of Justice. (The Criminal Procedure Code, Section 96) May a Police Officer break into a premises, including where resistance is offered? If a wanted outlaw resists the admittance of the official, the official shall be permitted to exercise physical force for the purpose of

accessing the premises and, where necessary, may force his way by opening or destroying any gate, door, window, fence or other similar barricade. (The Criminal Procedure Code, Section 94) If a Police Officer visits a house or land, can he she go into the house or enter onto the private land? Why? No. Searching a private place without a search warrant or a court order is prohibited. (The Criminal Procedure Code, Section 92) If someone reports a crime, do the police have a duty to attend to the report? Under what circumstances can the police simply choose not to investigate? Yes, the police have a duty to attend to a report of a crime. An investigation must be carried out without delay. Such investigation may be held at any place or any time as deemed appropriate without the accused being present (The Criminal Procedure Code, Section 130). However, an investigative officer may not conduct an inquiry in the following events: 1. When the victim requests assistance but declines to make a regular complaint. 2. When the victim institutes a prosecution by him or her self without having made a complaint. 3. When there is a written complaint which is anonymous, or when the person making an oral complaint refuses to disclose his or her identity or to attribute to him or her self the note or complaint (The Criminal Procedure Code, Section 122) If someone is being assaulted what can the Police do if the assault is still in process? An administrative or Police official may arrest any person without a warrant or order directed by a court if the person in question commits a flagrant offence pursuant to section 80 of the Criminal Procedure Code. If the police suspect someone is carrying drugs, under what circumstances can they stop and question or stop and search the suspect? If a cement truck kills someone, do the police have the power to arrest the driver and automatically charge him? The answer is contained within the meaning of an 'Administrative or Police Official', which means an official vested by law with the power and duty to keep the public peace. This definition includes chief gaolers, customs and excise officers, harbour department officials, immigration officers and all other officials when performing acts in connection with the arrest of offenders or the suppression of crime which they have the duty to supervise or suppress. (The Criminal Procedure Code, Section 2 (16)). Therefore, yes, the Police do have the power to arrest that cement truck driver.

Upon receipt of such application, the court shall immediately hold a hearing for the applicant. There are, of course, many other laws and regulations which many will simply not be aware of when encountering events which may befall them in Thailand: assaults, robberies and thefts, fleeing the scenes of road traffic accidents, rape, threatening behaviour with guns, ransom and kidnap to name just a few examples. It is best to know what the regulations are and, in times of severe trauma and stress, to check the rules with a qualified and licensed Thai attorney-at-law who is competent and has experience in matters of criminal law.

If a locked safe in a hotel has missing items, do the Police have a duty to investigate how the items became missing? As per the above, yes, because an investigating officer shall, so far as is possible, collect every kind of evidence for the purpose of ascertaining all facts and circumstances in respect of the offence alleged, identifying the offender in order to assist to prove the guilt or innocence of any accused. (The Criminal Procedure Code, Section 131) If a Police Officer shoots someone when he is off duty – what is the punishment for the Police Officer ? Are there any special rules about Police behaviour when off duty? Whoever, murdering the other person, shall be punished by death or imprisoned from 15 years to 20 years. (Thai criminal Law, Section 288) Can a Police Officer use his gun when he is not on duty and not in uniform? No, because under The Thailand Gun Act, 1947, section 8 Bis, Police Officers cannot use their guns when not on duty and not in uniform. Is it legal for a Police Officer to drink whisky in a karaoke bar, on duty and in uniform? Such an act would be illegal because under The Police Act 2004, section 78 (12) the Police may not behave in a way that is "inappropriate". If a Police Officer makes a mistake in procedure during the arrest process, can the suspected criminal challenge the Police Officer? Yes, such a person can challenge the arrest process because, under The Criminal Procedure Code, Section 90: “Where any person is alleged to be unlawfully arrested in a criminal case or in any other event, the following persons shall be entitled to submit a motion to the court which is empowered to exercise

PHUKET MARKETS

PHUKET MARKETS

Best markets in Phuket 2 Banzaan Market, directly behind the island’s largest shopping mall, Jungceylon, is also quite a sensory overload. Along with juicy ffresh fruit, handicrafts and souvenirs upstairs you can also get a reasonably priced meal.

Phuket Town’s trendy 3 Indy Market takes place every Thursday and Friday on Dibuk Road from 16:00-22:00 and is a must for those who enjoy live music, art and creatively produced handicrafts. 4 Lard Yai (meaning ‘big market’) also operates nearby and is open on Sundays with the same running hours as the Indy Market. It also offers inventive handicrafts and a carefree atmosphere, largely because its vendors are the same gang as at Indy.

Phuket Markets

In the south of Phuket, the 5 Monday-and-Thursday market along Wichit Road near the Seashell Museum operates from 16:00-21:00 selling a head-spinning mishmash of jeans, mangoes, bananas, eggplants and iPhones. Kata Beach has several options. 6 The market by the Chaba Resort in central Kata can seem overpriced when it comes to food, but its fresh products are on par with island-wide prices. In 7 Cherng Talay (near the Laguna Complex) the large open-air market diagonally opposite the police station operates Wednesday and Sunday from 13:00-20:00. 8 Karon Temple Market (Tuesday and Saturday 16:00-22:00) sells the usual fruit and vegetables and quirky souvenirs, all with a tangible welcoming atmosphere; probably because it’s situated in the temple grounds.

The clearest lens through which to glimpse the heart of Phuket’s society is its market places. Local markets are downright chaotic, vibrant, overpowering and exotic. In short, they’re fascinating places to explore.

Phuket has countless markets, ranging from the daily central 'talad yai' (big market) on Ranong Road in the provincial capital, to twice-weekly ambulatory 'talad nat' markets all over the island. There’s also another category of market known as a 'talad sot' (‘sot’ means ‘fresh’ in Thai.) These are ‘wet’ markets operating at the same location several times a week. No matter – they’re all attractive and captivating places to visit.

In short, there’s one near you. Bone up on Thai numbers and jump into this quintessential Thai shopping opportunity.

Naka market 1 Naka Market is the Big Daddy of them all: it was first called the 'talad tai rot' (car boot market) and its original moniker more than adequately indicates its origins. Situated on Chao Fa West Road just south of Central Festival Phuket shopping mall, it’s often compared to Bangkok’s enormous Chatuchak Market, even though it’s nowhere near the size. Naka Market’s 1,000 stalls sell about everything you could possibly imagine but, unlike talad nats, Naka majors on clothing; fashion accessories; electronics; wood-carved souvenirs, and household goods rather than fresh food. Operating from 16:00 – 21:00 on Saturdays and Sundays, it’s a buzzing hive of activity and can get pretty frenetic past six o’clock. It’s best to get there at around four in the afternoon to escape the later crowds.

Market hints • It’s an absolute given never to accept the original asking price for non-food articles at any type of market in Southeast Asia. The best way to bargain an item down is to smile and halve the price. The vendor will automatically (and sometime dramatically) refuse the offer so raise your bid until you feel the price is right. If you're convinced that you're being hoodwinked, slowly walk away and you’ll generally receive a last-ditch offer. But by and far away the most successful bargaining tactic is to smile!

Talad sot and talad nat markets These markets operate twice-weekly in locations all over the island. Generally selling curry pastes (take some home – they’re delicious), pyramids of vividly-hued and sometimes startling-looking fresh fruit and vegetables, seafood, chicken and red meat, along with an odd assortment of kitchen sinks, Toyota transmissions, and the odd stormtrooper helmet, not to mention lingerie. Okay, maybe the latter few are an exaggeration but only just… Muck in and enjoy the experience. And believe it or not you can sometimes score a cocktail or a frosty beer for a song here: all-in-all, an unforgettable yet pungent experience.

• Wear trainers or shoes/sandals with a grip as sometimes after a rain shower the going underfoot can get a bit slippery (with the exception of covered markets such as Naka, Patong’s Baanzan Market, Phuket Town’s Talad Yai and its walking-street markets). Ever tried walking through mud wearing flip-flops? You’ll end up with an unwanted but vivid Mohican stripe up your back – that is if you don’t altogether lose your footwear in the sludge. • Several Patong markets also have peripheral tattoo shops that command prices far lower than back home. Beware though; a beer-fuelled westerner recently had his left bicep labeled ‘right’ and his right, ‘left.’ Apparently he didn’t mind at all… until the next morning.

THINGS TO DO

THINGS TO DO

• Oh Aew: An unbeatable Phuket dessert which is made from jellied banana-flour mixed with boiled red beans, ice and sweet red syrup

The oldest Chinese school in Phuket, Thai Hua School was built in 1911 and is now the Thai Hua Museum, a community and exhibition centre for Baba arts and culture and influences. (Baba culture is a product of mixed Malay-Chinese marriages interractions, predominantly based in Malaka, Penang and Phuket.) The museum is a two-storey building, the upper level balconied internally to look down on the ground floor. Some of the old schoolrooms still retain old school desks and photographs of former students. The Phuket Thai Hua Museum is on Krabi Road and is open Tuesday to Friday from 1-8pm, Saturday and Sunday from 9am-8pm. Entrance is free. It's certainly worth a visit. 81 B4

Bungy jump: Taking a flying leap is an activity certain to get the heart racing and Jungle Bungy Jump in Kathu has been providing some bungee jump thrills for more than 20 years in Phuket. Diving off a platform at a height of 50 metres and plunging towards a small lake doesn’t seem like the most sensible thing to do but that’s the point – the aim is to rev up the adrenaline and for just one moment know what it feels like to fly free like an eagle. Jump!

• Oh Tao: (Also known as Hoi Tod Hokgian). This is a fried oyster dish prepared with eggs, flour, bean sprouts and taro root. It’s a favourite Phuket snack. • Arpong: One of Phuket famous local desserts. The flavour is quite sweet – it’s a golden-yellow roll desert which is soft inside and crispy on the outside. The ingredients for Arpong are rice flour, egg yolk, coconut milk, water, salt and yeast. These ingredients are mixed together, then stored overnight. Then, when it’s time to create Arpong, the mixture is divided amongst tiny pans and spread into a circle. 53 D4

Go karting: Go karting offers a behind-the-wheel adventure using specially designed vehicles to race around a track. Kids especially love the thrill of becoming a mini F1 driver for the day, while children not ready to take the wheel may ride along with an adult on a two-seater go kart. The most elaborate go cart track is at Phuket Go Kart Speedway in Kathu, while another track may be found next to Phuket Shooting Range in Chalong.

• Loba: A local Phuket local dish which is made from head, ears, tongue and entrails of pigs and stewed in soy sauce, then deep fried served with fresh cucumber and sweet, sour and spicy sauce. • Dim Sum: This is a steamed dumpling, filled with a choice of every imaginable variety of sweet or savoury filling, sometimes accompanied by Chinese herb chicken soup and condiments. • Mee Hok Kian: This is made with large yellow noodles similar to Japanese Soba. Mee Hok Kian can be served with pork-bone soup and/or dried noodles. A delightful variety known as Mee Hok Kian Pak includes fried noodles, soup, egg, fried onions, pork crackling and a choice of pork, fish or squid. • Mee Sue: Phuket’s breakfast noodles with a salty taste and white colour when uncooked are boiled and flavoured with oriental spices. They can be served with sliced pork or chicken accompanied by boiled rice or rice soup.

This is the most popular and largest of all the viewpoints. The area has been developed to offer extensive views over the sea and there are walking paths from the cliffs to the water's edge for the adventurous. But do take care close to the cliffs! This is nature. The sunsets are absolutely breathtaking and never the same two days running. If you're romantically inclined, this is the place to come in the evenings and hold hands as the setting sun paints the evening skies in towering kaleidoscopes of light and shade.
