THINGS TO DO

THINGS TO DO

Phuket Botanic Garden should be on a list of attractions to visit while in Phuket! The site is in the Chalong area not far from Chalong Temple. The garden features an amazing horticultural display split into 30 zones, each containing different species. The site contains a butterfly garden in addition to various other gardens: Herb Garden, Orchards, Sufficient Garden, Orchid Garden, Fern Garden, Cactus Garden, Rainforest, Japanese Garden, English Garden, Bali Garden, Water Lily Garden and a Palm Garden. The Phuket Botanic Garden also serves as a research centre for many rare plant species. Take a picnic lunch and enjoy these immaculately kept tropical gardens.

Phuket has plenty of choices when it comes to places to see and things to do or to try. We hope the suggestions here will enhance your holiday experience and perhaps persuade you to return in the future.

Open from 9am-4.30pm. Closed on Wednesday. The entry fee for non-locals is 500 baht for adults and 300 baht for kids. 102 G3 Phuket Botanic Garden.

If you are here with your family, horse riding is a relaxing and romantic way for you all to explore Phuket's natural scenery. In contrast, a brisk canter along the beach is most invigorating.

A hundred years ago, Phuket City had a prosperous economy based on tin mining, and even back then was an international centre with a large expatriate community of Chinese and Europeans.

There are two clubs on the island: Phuket International Horse Club, easily spotted at the entrance to Laguna Resort, is open seven days a week from 8am until 6pm. Phuket Riding Club is located in the southern part of the island on the road to Rawai Beach, and offers riding tuition for all levels of ability including children. The Club is open daily from 7am until 6.30pm.

They built beautiful homes in the style called Sino-Portuguese – terraced townhouses with narrow frontages and accommodations which stretch back from the road. The interiors often include walled gardens and fountains, and are beautifully furnished with antiques and Chinese inspired decorations. Rommanee Road is a fine example which has been fully restored. Visit Talang Road, Yaowarat Road and Dibuk Road. Nowadays, these streets in the Chinese quarter have transformed themselves into busy thoroughfares featuring antique shops, speciality restaurants and more. 81 B4

The oldest Chinese school in Phuket, Thai Hua School was built in 1911 and has now become the Thai Hua Museum, serving as a community and exhibition centre for baba arts and culture. The museum is a two-storey building with the upper level balconied internally to look down on the ground floor. Many of the exhibits and artifacts relate to the art and culture of China. Some of the old schoolrooms still remain as they were in the past with old school desks and photographs of former students. The Phuket Thai Hua Museum is on Krabi Road. It’s open on Tuesday through Friday from 1 to 8pm and Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 8pm. Entrance is free. It's certainly worth a visit.

10

The Provincial Hall, the Phuket Courthouse and the town branch of the Siam City Bank are further examples of architecture from the past. All well worth a visit. 81 C5 Talang Rd. 81 C4 Rommanee Rd., Yaowarat Rd. and Dibuk Rd.

Niña racing upwind

Invisible yacht wins Langkawi Regatta trophy We won! That is we won six out of our 10 races. We won the regatta series trophy. And we won the ‘Malaysian Multihull Challenge’ Cup. Oh… and we also won the coveted ‘Tunku Abdullah Sportsmanship Award’, voted by participants for competitiveness, fair racing and comradeship on and off the water (although in our case more likely because of our ‘clown’ makeup…). Not a bad haul, really.

And we did all of it while invisible – or at least, invisible to the Royal Langkawi International Regatta’s (RLIR) official photographer, who took thousands of photos but (on most days) none of the leading multihull, Niña. Multihull racers are accustomed to the invisible nature of their chosen yacht style when it comes to racing. The glamour boys and girls in those big, can’t-stay-upright, racing yachts get all the glory – and the photo gallery haul.

Multihullers, however, take comfort in the fact that, unlike their monohull counterparts, the dry martinis don’t need lashing down when there’s a bit of breeze. Of course there are always exceptions and, had the recalcitrant photographer been around, he’d have got some prize-winning shots of Niña’s unseemly acrobatics (bum high in the sky) in a particularly strong gust on the home run from the Round-theIsland-Race. But, of course, we were still invisible...

Joking aside, RLIR takes the prize as our favourite regatta; we can live without the snapshots. We compete each year in four regattas: RLIR (January), Bay Regatta (February/March), Phuket’s Multihull Regatta (July) and Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek (CPHPRW) (July). After a few entries, we ditched Phuket’s biggest regatta, King’s Cup, as too tedious, too expensive and remarkably downmarket onshore. Let’s run through what makes or breaks the rest…

Regatta Bristol Channel Cutter Evelyn – last year’s Ocean Rover winner but merely third this year

But what really makes the difference for Phuket-based boats is that it’s not here! How many of us have a yacht in Phuket, but rarely find time to take it out of Phuket waters? I see a lot of hands raised… RLIR provides the perfect excuse, following hard on the heels of the over-indulgence of the festive season, to get on board and get away – cruising down and back through some of the most beautiful and peaceful islands in the area. The regatta is five days of sailing, but the journey down and back can be as long as you want (if you’re retired) or as long as you can get away (for those of us still earning the bucks).

This year we stretched a five-day regatta to 10 days; next year, we’ve promised ourselves that we’ll turn it into a two-week adventure. For stopover options, check out www.southeastasiapilot.com. This magnificent regional cruising guide is available in print or e-book versions. Next year’s dates are 11-16 January 2016. www.langkawiregatta.com for more info.

Racing Class winner, Peter Ahern, besieged by the media. (Niña’s crew were in the bar discussing tactics)

Phuket’s Multihull Regatta is the one where the photographers have no choice but to shoot multihulls and has great racing in usually good breezes. Ashore, to say it’s laid back would be an understatement; let’s call it the ‘no-party regatta’ in a region where regatta parties are traditionally part of the ‘deal’. Nothing wrong with the event, which sets out to be ‘low key‘, a fact reflected in the cost of entry.

On the water, RLIR offers three completely different options for racing: in the harbour, offshore and around the islands. Clever race management makes the most of all three to provide five days of incredibly varied courses. Onshore, regatta management is getting to grips with its parties, too, and the standards (including a reserved-seat system for the final night) are improving every year.

All the winners together – some heavy trophies on display!

Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek is an outstanding event with great racing and a standard of party catering (food and drink) that leaves all the others standing. It is, however, something of a two-dimensional event – same race area every day and same party venue every night.

Bay Regatta, the cruisers’ live-aboard event, races through great scenery in Phang Nga Bay but often struggles for wind and, to be frank, the parties do leave a lot to be desired. It has also become, in 2015, the most expensive regatta on ‘our’ circuit.

So what makes RLIR different? What puts this one head and shoulders above the rest? First it’s run out of a marina with free berthing for participants. That alone is hard to beat, while part of the benefit is a REAL yacht club bar for post-race refreshment.

Dinghy trips ashore are possible at high tide, where there is a beach with a few huts at the back of the bay and great trails either side of the creek. The bay dries a considerable distance from the beach at low tide so keep an eye on your timing unless you want to do the dinghy drag.

SIX SENSES HIDEAWAY YAO NOI

A

The 56-pool-villa Six Senses Hideaway Yao Noi is built around a small hill and was the first ultra-luxury hotel on the island. Situated on a tiny crescent-shaped all-tide beach between Ao Muang and Long Beach this property offers five star services for the cruising yachtsman. The resort has built a wooden jetty on the north point for ferrying guests to and from the island and Ao Po Grand Marina. Anchorage for the resort is in 4-6 metres on mud outside the hotel moorings near the jetty on the north point. The established Koh Yao Island Resort is just south past the southern headland and there is a walkway through the mangroves at the back of the outcrop joining the properties. Anchor in 8-10 metres on the muddy bottom in front of either of these stylish boutique hotels.

The 4th Edition of Southeast Asia Pilot contains a further eight anchorages on Koh Yao alone. To find out how/where to buy the print version, visit www.southeastasiapilot.com. For the ebook version, search ‘Southeast Asia Pilot’ in App Store or Google Play.

We start our anchorages from the north of Koh Yao Noi with Koh Kudu and Koh Roi which are part of Ao Phang Nga National Park. It is possible to find shelter anywhere in a comfortable depth off either coast so we just name a few of the better locations.

The bay just to the north, Ao Pho Noi, is great for dinghy excursions, and features several small beaches for landing and swimming against a backdrop of mangroves overhung by towering limestone cliffs.

Together they have a population of 14,000 mostly Sunni Muslims who live by fishing, farming and rubber. In recent years there has been some resort development mainly on the east coast of Koh Yao Noi and the south west coast of Koh Yao Yai.

The Paradise Koh Yao is a boutique resort nestled in the palm trees behind the beach. There is a floating dinghy jetty in the north of the bay and yachties are welcome to use the restaurant ashore. There is a regular transfer speedboat to The Yacht Haven several times each day.

The Yao Island Archipelago runs north to south and divides Phang Nga Bay into two distinct cruising areas. To the west and north is Phang Nga Bay and to the East and south are Krabi and the mainland. They are part of Phang Nga province and served by ferry from Phuket, Phang Nga and Krabi.

Reasonably well sheltered, particularly in the southwest season, this anchorage is in 10-12 metres on a muddy bottom, tucked in 100 metres southwest of the small rocky outcrop.

D SABAI CORNER AND LONG BEACH 24 miles from Yacht Haven

The rustic Long Beach and Sabai Corner bungalows to the south also have small restaurants, operating all year round and offering a welcome opportunity to dine out on seafood after several days of cooking on board. However, their beaches are fringed with drying coral banks at low tide, giving limited access. Just north of Sabai Corner is the Villaguna Boutique Resort and all are served by the concrete ring road connecting the beaches and the main ferry terminal. Anchor in 4-6 metres off the southern end of the small bay. E KOH NOK 25 miles from Yacht Haven

Tucked in behind the neighbouring small islets and rocks, this spot offers limited protection in the northeast monsoon season. To the west, a sandy spit runs out in shallow water towards some rocks. Excellent as a stopover on the way to the Koh Hong island group or Krabi, this beach is also good for swimming, with water much clearer than that found in the passage.

Chong Koh Yao Chong Koh Yao is the passage between the Yao Islands, used extensively by local vessels en route to Phuket from the northeast of Koh Yao and the Krabi area. For pleasure vessels, even keelboats it is navigable with care on a mid to rising tide. Rule of thumb; the high tide must be at least 0.5 metres more than your vessel’s draft. The approach from the west is to favour the north coast of Koh Yao Yai heading towards the fixed white tower marker at 8° 5.10N, 98° 34.55E then steer 65° towards the seaward end of the commercial jetty on Koh Yao Noi before passing north of the visible rock. Once clear steer southeast to exit the channel. A ferry service leaves several times daily from the jetty on Koh Yao Noi, landing on Phuket at the inlet called Bang Rong just south of Ao Po.

Rocks in the channel These rocks are visible at all tides and are clearly marked with an isolated danger beacon. Used as a navigation aid transiting Chong Koh Yao, keel vessels should always pass well clear to the north.

PHUKET NIGHTLIFE OUTSIDE OF BANGLA: PARTY LIKE A THAI

PHUKET NIGHTLIFE OUTSIDE OF BANGLA: PARTY LIKE A THAI Saxophone Pub & Restaurant

While the concept of DJ music isn’t entirely foreign to locals (there are some superb Thai DJs on the island) few would choose a dance-floor kind of party over live music. The bands in local clubs play variations of soft and hard rock, Thai pop, and even MTV hits in English. What they all have in common, I find, is skilled musicians and superb vocals. In these clubs, most visitors enjoy the atmosphere by sitting around tables, chatting and laughing, or singing along. Even so, a few dance enthusiasts (such as me) can still find a little room between the tables to “move like Jagger” without many frowns. Also, in many such clubs it’s not at all strange to bring your own liquor and only buy soft drinks and ice at the bar. Dress-codes typically vary from casual to time-hopping into the 1960s and ‘70s, in addition to hipster fashions with colourful attire and glasses with large rims. You’ll find many of the popular Thai live music spots in chic and hip areas downtown in Phuket City. Examples include Sofa Pub on New Dibuk Road (next to the Indie Market), Kor Tor Mor Club on Chana-Charoen Road (near the Seahorse Circle, behind Robinson Department Store), Saxophone Pub & Restaurant (next to the Seahorse Circle) Lard Yai opposite Phang Nga Soi 2 and Ploen Jit (next to Saxophone Pub & Restaurant). 81 D4

If you’v you’ve ’vee ne neve never ver been out for a karaoke night with Thai friends you’ve missed out on an entire universe of fun. Regardless of whether you like to sing or if karaoke is your idea of a good time, this is a musttry for those keen to experience the local culture. In karaoke bars across the island, most parties take place in separate VIP rooms equipped with generous couches, a TV, two microphones and a catalogue of both Thai and English-language hits. As the hostesses seamlessly glide in and out to ensure the beer doesn’t dry up, your private karaoke joint turns into a place of friendship, and lots of fun. I’ve lost my voice more than once during such nights and we’ve even converted a couple of sworn karaoke enemies amongst our friends. Even the wettest blankets who refuse to take the mike end up dancing and singing backing vocals. Music knows no barriers; you’ll feel closer to local culture once you catch a few tunes and familiarise yourself with Thai hip-hop and folk hits, and your Thai friends will attempt to keep up with upbeat Madonna and AC/DC songs. To try this premise out, simply ask the locals where the nearest karaoke bars are. Depending on where you’re staying, there’ll be at least a few of them in yyour area or dozens if yyou find yyourself in the heart of Phuket Town.

Phuket’s famous for its vibrant nightlife. For many of its visitors, particularly those between 20 and 30, this means exploring lots of bars and nightclubs during their stay. Patong is the hub of it all, with its neon lights, blaring music and noise, along with attractive girls and ladyboys who lure customers into their workplaces. Whether you enjoy the frenetic Patong scene or not, chances are that you’re nonetheless familiar with it as most Phuket residents have partied there at least a couple of times. Go-go dancers, earsplitting DJ tunes and loud mingling are fairly universal in the western concept of fun nightlife yet clubs that feature them typically aren’t the places where one gets to meet locals. So what kind of nightlife do Thais enjoy? No matter where in the world you are, understanding cultural differences and integrating with local life takes time. Phuket is no exception, even though Thais tend to be warm and welcoming towards strangers. Reflecting on the past four years I’ve been here, I realise that some of the social moments I’ve enjoyed the most were with Thai friends, thus exposing me to bits and pieces of their culture. For this reason, I’ve concluded that, in order to party like a Thai, a couple of elements are essential:

30

(AKA when you’re invited to a private birthday party) Faithful to the live music concept, for their birthday celebrations locals typically hire a band, a karaoke singer or even just someone with a guitar. Although it’s customary for the host to provide food or snacks, don’t be surprised if you spot other guests bringing their own food. Furthermore, if you get invited to a table by a happy group of Thais you aren’t familiar with, don’t let your shyness get in the way. Not only refusing them would appear rude but the invitation itself also means that you, too, must be ready to party like a Thai. Cheers, or as we say it here: chok-dee!

U ZENMAYA

Richard Mehr “What makes us who we are here in Phuket is the people we meet; this is the kind of environment where things don’t matter and there are no boundaries, only acceptance,” says Mr. Richard Mehr, General Manager of U Zenmaya in Kalim Where are you from and when did you move to Phuket? In a nutshell, I arrived on Phuket in 1995 and at that time the island numbered but a few thousand expats. Phuket was very different than it is today and the good thing was that everybody knew one another, at least by sight. I came to Phuket as an F&B trainee and worked at Le Meridien, shortly before joining The Boathouse Wine & Grill where I had some serious fun for a few years. Then I travelled back and forth and Phuket became my pied-à-terre. I was born and raised in Switzerland and am very proud of that but I do consider myself a citizen of the world. What made you decide to come and live here? Pure chance. I was offered a traineeship in one the most prestigious hotel chains and and it was in Thailand on a beautiful island; I'd have been a fool to say no! I was keen to live out my dreams and sharpen my experience, and the chance to combine both is not given to everyone, so I consider myself lucky. Like everyone else visiting the Kingdom and the island, I fell in love with the way of life, the food, the scenery and the culture – and back then it was so easy to make friends. The difficulty for many of us was to find a reason to leave the safety and security of our home countries and say goodbye to our families and friends. But then you arrive in Phuket and, somehow, the feeling of insecurity and homesickness evaporates. Tell us something about your work I've been back on the island since February 2013 and I took over this position in September last year after leaving another property in Nai Harn Beach. My work is my passion and I subscribe to the view that a hotel or resort is only as good as the people it employs, no matter the facilities and services it may provide. I try to be an inspiration to my team, leading by example and being fully hands-on in all areas of operation. I’m a very visible GM, constantly “patrolling” U Zenmaya, enquiring as to our guests’ well-being – they can speak to me at any time about any matter. What do you like the most about living here? The weather, the culture, the food, the people. I think all of us here prefer to live life with a sense of freedom. I don’t like to be restricted by rules and regulations; I'm a bit of a renegade when it comes to following rules, especially in my own country. A short anecdote: when I left Phuket in the beginning of 2004 to return to Europe, it was the worst decision of my life. I simply could not reintegrate with my ‘own kind’, my friends and family members had changed… or so I thought, but then realised that I was the one who had changed. I happily returned to Thailand in 2006. What do you dislike about living here? I love Thailand and I love the Thai people. What hurts me the most is to see that Phuket, once the Jewel of the Andaman, is declining and has lost its prestige and shine. It’s overpopulated, there's an oversupply of housing estates, hotels, traffic jams… and so on. I hate to say this but it is not what it used to be. Do you have a family here and where do you live? Actually my parents live next door to me in Rawai and I share a house with the most amazing person in my life, my beautiful girlfriend 'Gee'. I also have two gorgeous daughters aged 8 and 12

68 E2

who were born in Thailand but live with their mother in Denmark. I divide my time between living at the U Zenmaya property during the week and at my house in Rawai over the weekend. How do you spend your free time, if you have any? I usually spend my free time with my girlfriend. Luckily, there are lots of activities we enjoy doing together, mostly constructive hobbies and fun pastimes, such as going to the movies or spending time with friends. On a more personal level, I also enjoy reading, painting and writing; I write poems, columns and satires, some have been published in various newspapers and magazines in Thailand.

What do you value most in your life? There are a few things that I value, but the most important are family and friendship. Onto these key values, you can graft words such as happiness, respect, honesty, honour, fun…etc. My life’s motto or code of conduct is “essere e sopravvivere” which means "to be and to last". I find it a powerful slogan which has helped me through the hard times. How do you evaluate success? In different ways. At work, success is when I'm performing well and satisfied with my position and the results, knowing that my work is adding value to my company, that our guests are satisfied and of course most importantly, that I bring the necessary knowledge to my team to outperform themselves. The team needs to achieve both individual and team goals, and it's most important in the end to see my team happy. Success in my private life, well…so far I can't say that I'm a fully successful person, since I have still yet to achieve my personal goals. I aspire to be a good partner, a great father, an outstanding leader and a successful businessman, whilst enjoying life and having fun. What do you think the future holds for you? I’d love to grab hold of my crystal ball and read you my future, but I'll have to come-up with a banal answer, I guess. Time will tell, but I know soon enough there will be a change in the stars. I don’t intend to leave South East Asia but I have a purpose; I want to move on to new levels and challenge myself a few more times. Until then I'll enjoy the delights of our beautiful island. AMULET MARKET

AMULET MARKET

Down on your D yo our luck? our l k? Seeking S ki great wealth l h or good d health? h l h? LLooking ook king forr love? lov ve? It’s natural for people everywhere to search for a happier ha a life, and every culture has its own set of superstitions an and lucky charms believed to help change life for the better.

In Thailand, many put their trust into amulets and talismans: small, sometimes beautifully crafted items attached to necklaces or strategically placed in one’s home, workplace or vehicle. Amulets of all sorts may be found at Buddhist temples, and there’s a thriving trade outside the temples at street markets, magazines, even online. Finding the right amulet or collection of amulets is believed to bring about improvements in one’s life, as well as protection from harm. Tucked away in the heart of the historic Old Town district in Phuket Town is a narrow, tin-roofed lane where the amulet trade is carried out daily with great panache. Amulet Alley, found on a tiny walking soi connecting Phang Nga Road and Rassada Road, is so nondescript that many walking around the Old Town streets will pass it by completely unaware. It’s known locally as Nam Nao for the canal (klong) that runs under it.

About a dozen tables are set up along the length of the lane, each displaying neat rows of amulets, talismans and statues, and there are a few small shops behind the tables. There’s a wide variety of designs and colours, but often the amulet traders themselves are the most colourful sight in the market. The small lane reverberates with laughter and chatter, with constant joking and haggling between the traders. Buyers can be seen giving the amulets a close inspection with mini magnifying glasses, checking for authenticity and quality of design. Curious onlookers are welcome to come and take a look at the amulets, and most of the traders are happy to show off their collections and explain a bit about each item. Friendly and relaxed, there’s no hard sell or pushy behaviour here. One trader, when asked about his peculiar -looking belt, quickly removed it from his ample waist and held it up, saying, “Save from the gun! Save from the bomb!” Dangling from his belt were several carved phallic shapes of various sizes, apparently packed with enough power to protect the man from bullets. (Let’s hope they’re never put to the test.) The phallic symbol is one of the most striking images on display, sitting amongst all kinds of figures derived from Buddhist, Taoist, animist traditions. Many Buddha and monk images Hindu and anim rub shoulders with rabbits, monkeys, turtles, dragons and gods and goddesses including Toranee, the longvarious god Earth Goddess of Buddhist legend. One of the pricier haired Ear amulets (1,900 baht) was a painted butterfly pendant with gemstones, which the seller brought out and invited us gemst to smell. sm Its scent was of sandalwood, similar to incense joss sticks at a temple.

Amulets and talismanic items are made with bronze, gold, silver, stone, bone, clay and other materials. Many are skilfully designed, but an amulet’s worth is based on much more than its artistic value. Collectors and life-improvement seekers look not only at the object’s design but also its age, historic importance, and, especially for amulets, the blessing of an important monk. The stories behind the amulet: which temple it came from, which monk it was consecrated by, and whether it’s known to bring good luck to others all come into play when considering its value. Beliefs in the potent power of amulets still remain strong in modern Thailand, most strikingly so with the recent craze over the Jatukam Ramathep amulet. Created by a temple in Nakhon Sri Thammarat province for many years, its popularity grew when a local police chief claimed that the amulet had helped him solve many crimes. The policeman’s death in 2007 then sparked a national frenzy over the amulet, with prices of original designs fetching millions of baht, plus millions more copies were sold around the country.

Given the intricacy of determining an item's value, as well as the ease with which copies may be made, it’s nearly impossible for non-expert buyers to know if the item is worth the price given. In any case, there are many at Amulet Alley that can be picked up for as little as 100 baht. Those searching for larger or higher-priced images may want to bring along a knowledgeable Thai friend or do some research to gain a better idea about an item’s current worth before negotiating a price. One final tip: when browsing for amulets and other items, be sure to handle them in a respectful manner since they are considered sacred items. Good luck!

Getting there: Amulet Alley has two entrance points. One, on Rassada Road, is near Salvatore’s restaurant, about 30 metres east of the Suriyadej Traffic Circle Fountain. The entrance from Phang Nga Road is directly opposite the Sang Tham (Serene Light) Shrine. 81 C5

The penalty for drinking and driving for a violation can be up to six months in prison and a fine of up to 60,000 Thai baht. That is subject to increases by the Alcoholic Beverage Control Committee.

Having a big night out?

Know the rules!

You should also be aware that if you harm, injure or kill someone whilst driving intoxicated, you could be charged with ‘reckless driving causing injury or death,’ which are quite serious charges in Thailand with potential hefty prison term penalties far exceeding the basic drinking and driving penalties.

K

nowing my business and professional background, several friends and family members from abroad have asked me in the past if there are any laws in respect of drinking in Thailand, and whether they are enforced. I usually get asked this question from someone on a first trip to Thailand, mostly out of curiosity and interest after observing what appears to be the rather lax and carefree ‘party-centric’ approach that some tourists take in Thailand’s highly touristed resort markets. Naturally, the answer I usually give is – of course there are laws and regulations about alcohol and drinking in Thailand, just like there are in your home countries! And yes, the rules are definitely enforced, even if at times enforcement seems to be lacking. To sum it up simply, alcohol sales, distribution and prohibited uses are now largely regulated by a law enacted in 2008 known as the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act, B.E. 2551 and its related ministerial regulations. The act defines what constitutes an ‘alcoholic beverage’, the selling, advertising and marketing of alcoholic beverages, and more. It also largely details who can sell alcoholic beverages, where they can be consumed, at what times, and the penalties for violations. So, what are the important rules visitors to Thailand should be aware of – simply stated, without needing a few drinks to overcome the boredom that comes from reading details about the law? Here are some practical answers to the most common questions we have come across (even if some seem to have obvious answers):

I am a 19 year old Canadian national and going to Samui for a trip with my friends. Will the local bars and pub be permitted to sell alcohol to me? Not legally. Under section 29(1) of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act, sellers of alcoholic beverages may only sell to persons aged 20 and above. However, there is no specific stipulation in the Act requiring sellers to check purchaser identification for age verification. The penalty for violating the above section is a fine of up to 20,000 Thai baht, or a term of not more than one year in prison.

Last weekend at a popular beach club in Phuket, I saw a bartender selling multiple bourbon shots to someone who was clearly drunk and disorderly. Are there any rules prohibiting the sale of alcohol to drunken persons? Yes, potentially, if it was clear to the bartender that the person buying the drinks was ‘unconscious’ from drinking, or lacked the capacity to understand the circumstances due to being drunk. Section 29(2) of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act sates that no person can sell an alcoholic beverage to a person who has lost consciousness due to being drunk. The penalty for violating the above section is a fine of up to 20,000 Thai baht, or a term of not more than one year in prison.

I was on my first trip to Bangkok and noticed a number of signs at various temples and public parks I visited that alcohol was not permitted. Is there a law prohibiting alcohol at these locations? Yes, definitely. Section 31 of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act prohibits the consumption of alcohol at temples, places of worship, public parks, public educational institutions and a number of other public locations and public health facilities. The penalty for violating the above section is a fine of up to 10,000 Thai baht, or a term of not more than six months in prison.

Do the laws of Thailand give any guidance as to who is defined as an ‘alcoholic’? The Alcoholic Beverage Control Act does indeed provide a rough definition of the term ‘alcoholic.’ It defines an alcoholic as "someone who drinks alcoholic beverages in a manner that such person desires to habitually drink so many alcoholic drinks until the person's physical and mental condition has been affected so adversely, and alcohol withdrawal syndrome is going to be presented when the person ceases to drink.” According to the Act, an alcoholic may apply for treatment at the Office of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Committee.

My friends and I are from Australia and on our last trip to Phuket, a 7-11 vendor refused to sell us a case of beer at 3pm. Why wouldn’t the vendor sell to us? Currently, regulations of the government and the Alcoholic Beverage Control Committee interpreting Section 28 of the Alcoholic Beverages Control Act permit the selling of alcoholic beverages by vendors between the hours of 11am to 2pm and 5pm to midnight only. There are limited exceptions to this rule for international airports, and certain legally registered entertainment venues in certain locations.

The penalty for a vendor violating the above regulation is a fine of up to 10,000 Thai baht, or a term of not more than six months in prison.

I am an ex-pat living in Bangkok and have never seen beer or any other alcohol sold in a vending machine in Thailand. Is this illegal? Yes. Section 30(1) of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act prohibits selling alcoholic beverages by automatic vending machines in Thailand.

I am a German ex-pat in Bangkok. Last weekend while out with my colleagues, I saw a metropolitan police officer questioning the owner of a bar about what appeared to be sale of alcohol to persons under the age of 20. The bar owner appeared to refuse to cooperate and produce the owner’s alcohol sales license, and he was then arrested. Why did that happen?

Under the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act, police officers generally have authority to investigate violations of the Act by sellers of alcoholic beverages. They may enter establishments that sell alcoholic beverages to the public during opening hours, and ask for production of documents. Under Section 44 of the Act, anyone who obstructs the duties of the official could be liable for a fine of up to 20,000 Thai baht or a term of not more than one year in prison.

My wife and I will be heading to the sunny beaches of Phuket this holiday season and intend to hire a car. We want to know whether it is legal to drink and drive in Thailand, or should we always hire a taxi to get around after a few drinks? You should definitely take a taxi or find other means of transportation if you have been drinking. Under Section 43 of the Land Traffic Act of Thailand it is prohibited to drive and operate a vehicle whilst being intoxicated. Being a foreign national in Thailand or not having a Thai driver’s license is irrelevant to the charge. The definition of ‘illegal drinking and driving’ is usually established by determining the Blood Alcohol Content of the violator as being higher than 0.5%, which is as a rule of thumb for most persons under normal circumstances, a bit less

sset for optimal safety and is a very enjoyable ccruising speed. TThe venue provides all the equipment you'll need for rental. This includes wakeboards, water skis, gloves and vests. There are a w vvariety of ways a beginner can start out and Cable Ski accommodates that. For their first time, most people ride on the kneeboards. These allow the rider to get a feel for being on the water, being pulled and navigating the turns. Once this is achieved, then you can try to stand. Besides being beginner-friendly, the Phuket Cable Ski also caters for advanced riders − and occasionally a professional wakeboarder will pop in and show off his skills. The lake boasts a number of ramps for jumping and some rails to do grinds and you'll often see the more serious riders doing back-flips and flying through the air to a cheering crowd.

Wear a vest for the water. That’s my advice when you decide to take a visit to one of Phuket’s most interesting attractions. The Cable Ski is a unique aquatic sporting venue in Asia and it caters for just about everyone. It consists of an oval shaped man-made lake with a cable suspended over the top, a dock fully stocked with all the wakeboarding equipment you need, a restaurant with patio seating, a running track and even an adjacent Thai massage. All of this is conveniently located just over the hill from Patong, next to Kathu Waterfall. The Cable Ski lake itself is 410 metres long, 110 metres wide and two metres deep. It was designed specifically for the sports of wakeboarding and water skiing. As such, a concrete walkway surrounds the lake

at water level. This prevents the water from becoming too choppy. A cable runs suspended over the lake and is connected to machinery at four corners. At the dock, the riders will don their wake-boards and gear, then line up to ride; one-by-one the attendee will hand them a rope that's connected to the cable above.

your balance. Having a good physique is helpful if you hope to become an advanced rider, but the sport itself is a great way to increase your fitness level − and it’s more fun that hitting the gym repeatedly. 'Be prepared to fall' is the best advice for novices. Acquiring skill at the sport requires determination as well as confidence. You can’t be afraid of falling into the water and you also have to be prepared to swim back to the sidewalk. However, you needn’t worry about having to carry your board all the way back to the dock as the staff will kindly drive out on a motorbike and return you to the starting position.

If you're the kind of person that worries about calorie content, then the cable ski is the place to eat. Riding the lake is a great way to burn fat, build those stabilising muscles that we so rarely use and to train

Once an open hook arrives at the dock, the rider will be pulled away. The set speed for open riding on the lake is 28 km/hr. This is

Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation Background During its grand opening celebrations in March 2002, the JW Marriott Phuket Resort and Spa and the Minor Hotel Group donated US$45,000 to launch the Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation to raise funds and awareness of the plight of the critically endangered giant leatherback turtles as well as other turtle species nesting in the area Mai Khao is one of the few Phuket beaches that continue to welcome nesting turtles. Turtle eggs are also rescued from nearby beaches where a necessary natural and peaceful environment can no longer be guaranteed. The eggs are then given to the Phuket Marine Biological Centre (PMBC), Department of National Park and the Royal Thai Navy who provide a safe home for them to hatch in; one where the young turtles can gain strength before finding their true home in the sea. The foundation funds these programmes.

Growth Over the last few years, the Foundation has broadened its environmental efforts to not only ensure the conservation of leatherback and other turtles but also to preserve the environment with the involvement of local communities, schools, universities, government organisations and other NGOs. The MKMTF is dedicated to educating the larger community about the plight of sea turtles here in Phuket and how we can support them. Efforts by the Foundation and its supporters include an integrated coastal management plan with its partner the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, including beach and reef cleaning, educational workshops, recycling projects, mangrove tree planting, turtle rescue/release and support of other marine conservation organizations.

Sustainability Funds are raised for the foundation by its members and partners such as JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa, Anantara Hotels and Resorts and the Marriot Vacation Club International who ensure a sizable annual donation goes to those Marine Conservation Units which ensure many worthy projects such as the Nesting Beach Patrols & Hatchery Program including the Marine Animal Stranding

Rescue Project to help bring awareness of turtle protection and encourage the participation of all stakeholders to preserve our natural surroundings.

The Future Our new partnership with the International Union for the Conservation of Nature brings the foundation into the global arena, and this opens the doors to thousands of relevant support structures and resources: www.iucn.org The foundation works closely with local authorities including the National Parks Office, the Fisheries Department and Phuket Marine Biological Centre to plan and execute conservation programmes in order to ensure that Mai Khao Beach remains an environmentally pristine area for turtles.

Annual programmes and activities • Marine Turtle Rehabilitation Shelter & Education Centre at JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa • Visiting schools programme to the Marine Turtle Rehabilitation Shelter and Education Centre • Mai Khao Turtle Fun Run and Mini Marathon in September every year • Turtle release at the JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa in April every year • Turtle release at the Anantara Layan Villas in March every year • Annual donation programme for Marine Turtle Conservation Program to Phuket Marine Biology Centre • Department of National Parks and Royal Thai Navy activities and events • Wetland and mangrove integrated management plan with IUCN including mangrove plantings • Beach and reef conservation activities with the Prince of Songkla University • Annual ‘Ride for the Turtles’ from the JW Marriott Phuket to the JW Marriott Khao Lak

This is the most popular and largest of all the view points. The area has been developed to offer extensive views over the sea and there are walking paths from the cliffs to the water’s edge for the adventurous. The sunsets are absolutely breath-taking and never the same two days running. If you are romantically inclined this is the place to come in the evenings and hold hands as the setting sun paints the evening skies in towering kaleidoscopes of light and shade.

This hill towers over Phuket City and is easily spotted as the crest is crowded with wireless masts. The approach road is narrow but in reasonable condition, and allows views of the island’s eastern beaches. At the top, is a jogging track. The hill is a favourite place for locals who come here after a day at the office to exercise or just to chill out. There are no specific facilities provided but it is very pleasant to visit the Khao To Sae shrine and pay your respects. Well worth a visit if you can make the time.

On top of Promthep Cape is a very pretty structure, the Kanchanaphisek Lighthouse which doubles as a museum. It was constructed in 1996. If you want to check the times of sunsets, ring the Phuket Meteorological & Radio Station on 076 211494. 125 c2
