IMAGE ASIA Nina and SuDu 1 The 8th Multihull Solutions Regatta is largest multihull-exclusive regatta in the Asian region and has a competitive edge on the water yet a relaxed atmosphere with many racers. Many racers have said it's the best regatta they’ve ever sailed. See you on the water next year!
Sweet Chariot The Racing Multi's (OMR) title went to Alan Carwardine's Stealth 11.8m Asia Catamarans Hurricane with Mick Coleman's sister ship Java coming in second and Grenville Fordham's Image Asia Nina placing third. John Newnham's Twin Sharks skippered by Brent Gribble won the Firefly 850 Sports title with George Edding's Blue Nose coming in second. Tatiana Bogatyzova's Lagoon 380 Star Fruit won the Open Multihull Class as the only entrant. Without an OMR rating, the Corsair Pulse 600 trimaran participants took advantage of the opportunity to use the Regatta as an exhibition event with Bob Garner's SuDu Red becoming the winner of the Corsair Class.

Helicam film MY Victory in panoramic Phang Nga Bay New Helicam Marine shooting is taking place out in panoramic Phang Nga Bay to show off some of Phuket’s most luxurious yachts – MY Victory – an 85ft motor cruiser designed and built in Italy. This imagery includes shooting interiors/exteriors and aerial angles from new drone helicopters. Many yacht owners choose Phang Nga Bay to showcase their yachts for its great location with the bay’s beautiful limestone ‘cathedrals’ that provide amazing background scenery. This imagery demonstrates that Phuket and its surroundings is a great place for yachting, with many islands within easy reach. Onboard activities and facilities are set up to show how one can enjoy a private yacht charter with so many exotic places to explore. WHERE TO FIND UNIQUE ACCESSORIES IN PHUKET
WHERE TO FIND UNIQUE ACCESSORIES IN PHUKET
Daytime clothes
Where to find unique accessories in Phuket:
Island Bliss Island Bliss shops have been appropriately named – their versatile sleek clothes made of natural materials are all about island lifestyle. Fabrics are 100% natural; most pieces are silk or cotton. Their latest collections also feature a mélange of the two in order to achieve an even lighter natural feel for hot days and what’s more, their attire can be machine washed. While the men’s range isn’t as extensive as the ladies’, the everyday casual yet eye-catching linen shirts definitely belong in the wardrobes of the discerning gentleman who can still dress stylishly in spite of the heat. The top floor of the Surin branch features kids’ fashion as well as a great selection of cushions for home and paintings by local artists.
l a c o l a e k i l p o h S Phuket is an attractive shopping destination for both tourists and locals. The island has products ranging from very affordable items at street markets to high-end designer stores that feature accessories you’d see in glossy magazines. At first glance, clothes, shoes, accessories, jewellery and bags are easily accessible here, yet dressing well and appropriately in year-round high humidity along with soaring tropical temperatures is a challenge for most people.
Beachwear
Hejselberg
A creative Danish fashion brand, Hejselberg produces simple yet edgy clothes for stylish and sophisticated women. Their creations aren’t necessarily made for the evening and can be worn any time. Above all they’re elegant and made from different kinds and combinations of silk. Hejselberg shops also carry other brands of similar styles, in addition to highquality jewellery, tote bags and purses, sandals, belts, and scarves. Ban Boran Textile Well known among locals and expats, Ban Boran is a vintage-looking boutique specialising in genuine textiles. The silk, raw silk, and cotton items are handmade in northern and northeastern Thai villages. Here you’ll find colourful and high-quality clothing as well as bags, wall hangings and tablecloths. Additionally, the shop features a unique selection of silver ornaments made by Ka Riang tribes in northern Thailand – a great gift for someone you love.

Katalina
81 C5
Katalina features great quality bikinis and swimwear designed by the Swedish owner. Here you’ll find everything you need for everyday stunning beach, pool and sailing wear: bathing suits, swimming shorts for men, kaftans, bags, and carefully selected jewellery. The swimwear designs are fashionable and made to stand out. It’s good to know that Katalina has fantastic sales a couple of times per year. Location: Surin main road and Boat Avenue in Cherngtalay
Those consciously opting for natural materials and handmade or otherwise unique accessories quickly learn that quantity doesn’t always guarantee quality. Many stores with classy products frankly overprice their items, making it that much more challenging to dress well for every occasion. Here’s a selection of Phuket’s affordable, fabric-conscious fashion options.

Accessories Siam Porosus
Indy market
For authentic leather lovers of both genders, this large and exotic leather shop has all the accessories one could ever hope for. Bags, clutches, wallets, jackets, shoes, sandals, jewellery, belts, key chains, and passport and phone covers are just some of the products they retail. The leather products vary, as do quality and prices. This is more than just a shop: there’s a presentation room where you can learn the difference between various kinds of leather and get professional advice on exotic leather products. All items at Siam Porosus are legal and are produced at a special farm in Thailand.
For highly authentic and handmade local accessories we recommend the trendy Indy market that runs every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings. BRICE BORIN
Brice Borin “I’m a strong believer in the hospitality business. Nowadays, businesses forget the essentials which all come down to: ‘welcome to my hotel,” says Brice Borin, General Manager of Regent Phuket Cape Panwa.
Where are you from and how long have you been in Phuket? I’m originally from France but it’s been almost 30 years since I left; I’ve lived in 12 countries since. In November I’ll have been in Phuket for five years – I came here in 2010, for the hotel’s pre-opening. We’ve been operating for two years now and, as we continue to develop and spread our wings, we’re pleased with what we’ve achieved so far. Had you been here before, on business or vacation? Yes, I’d holidayed in Phuket about three or four times before, so knowing the place before moving here was a good thing. I’d moved here from the Maldives and coming to a bigger island was a nice change. I really like the fact that here you can have it all: a good working and social life paired with a day on the beach on Sundays. Phuket has a good balance of things: activities and sports for adults and kids, mini-golf, restaurants, parties, beaches – it’s all here. Is there anything at all you dislike about Phuket? No, not really. I think it’s always possible to adapt yourself to the circumstances and many years of travelling to different countries teaches you to do exactly that. So there’s nothing in Phuket that really annoys me. Where do you live, and do you have a family here? I rent a house in Cape Panwa, only five minutes away from the resort. My wife is Thai and we have a seven-year-old son. I find that it works really well to have a home separate from the resort; it helps clear the mind. And I love Cape Panwa, it’s still quiet and authentic, I definitely feel at home when I return here from another part of the island. What do you do in your free time? The free time I have is divided between my family and sports. I enjoy standup paddle boarding and on this side of the island we get to do it all year long because of the calm waters. I also love running, biking, and playing tennis. I’m a believer in a ‘good body good mind’ philosophy. Plus, here in Phuket it’s easy to keep fit and the Panwa area is great in that way. We’ve also got some great cycling locations and you’ll see many people cycling at sunset.
28
How do you evaluate success? Success in life is to have work you don’t feel as work, plus a family and good health. I’m not one of those who are obsessed with finances and material goods; I’m surrounded by a great team and good people, and to me that’s success. Tell us something about your work. When you’re running a hotel, every day is different and that brings a new challenge, a new focus. Each guest is different and we need to constantly adapt ourselves. So part of the key is to continuously train your team, helping them improve their knowledge and service, but there needs to be a balance between the pressure you put on them and the guidance and support you supply. You also need to be there for them; be part of the team. You should be able to laugh with them as well. What do you think the future holds for you? As a hotelier you never know what the future will bring so I don’t really plan ahead too much. Travelling and moving is a part of life and me and my family have adapted to that. So who knows…? I’m a citizen of the world. But every time I’ve had a chance to work in Thailand, it’s become more of a home for me. And even after so many years away from France, naturally I still miss my family and the cuisine. Are you involved in any local charities, clubs or associations? Yes, and Regent Phuket Cape Panwa tries to support local charities that no-one else does. We’ve supported a home for the elderly and a few local schools. I’m also vice-president of Skål Phuket (a charitable international hoteliers’ association) where we are working to bring our charitable efforts up to the next level. So far we’ve raised assistance for other causes, such as for the Phuket Sunshine Village, and we’re developing another project for a charity in eastern Thailand that’ll commence later this year. PHUKET’S GENTLE GIANT
Phuket’s a place where everything happens at a fast-forward pace. For hundreds of years since the tin-mining days of yore, dreams of riches have been at the centre of the island’s energy.
Big ideas for Phuket are usually concocted and carried out by starryeyed entrepreneurs. But the biggest idea for the island yet comes from a surprising source: the sacred beliefs of a peaceful religion founded more than 2,500 years ago. Rising from the hills of Chalong, forming a gleaming presence that can be seen from clear across Phuket’s south, sits the Big Buddha. Some years ago, the huge statue was commissioned for a temple in Kata, but at some point someone looked up to the top of the verdant hill rising behind the temple and thought, “Why not?” Thus, an ambitious plan was born.
the project had not been completed within the permitted scope and timeline, and ordered it to be finished within the year. By and large it was. Before reaching the steps to the Buddha, visitors pass through a large hall with amulets and other religious artefacts for sale and donation boxes aplenty. The sparkling white Burmese marble that adorns the Buddha statue’s exterior, from the spiral hairpieces to the ears and fingernails, was paid for, piece by piece, by visitors and locals keen to add their names as benefactors to the project.
The Big Buddha project is helmed by Suporn Wanichkul, Chairman and Founder of the Phra Phuttha Mingmongkol Eaknakakeeree Foundation, who says that not only is the project a homage to the Buddha, but it also aims to promote cultural tourism in Phuket and introduce visitors to a side of the island away from Patong’s party zone. “Now, when people think of Phuket they will not only think of beer bars or ago-go bars with girls dancing around a pole,” he says. Predictably, perhaps, if you believe the Buddha’s pronouncement that “life is suffering”, the rise of the Big Buddha has not been without its problems. A project of religious significance sited well above the island’s 80m limit on construction makes for a tangled web of building approvals and concessions. It culminated when local officials complained that
Indeed, the entire project has been financed by donations alone, a remarkable feat that shows Phuket’s solid economic standing and international appeal. Visitors are invited to donate a set amount for one square marble tile, on which they may write a message. Tiles on display show an incredible variety of languages, hopes and well-wishes. But has it been too much of a good thing? Has the overflowing car park and packs of tour groups tromping around cluelessly undermined its sanctity and meaning? On a frenetic island where money is sacred, is the sacred now at risk of turning into a money machine? The struggle of the Big Buddha’s direction could be seen as a microcosm of Phuket’s larger fight to balance money, power, culture and community. It’s the burning question on the mind of many for Phuket: “What’s next?”

PHUKET’S GENTLE GIANT
PHUKET’S GENTLE GIANT To fend off the overwhelming feelings of lust, longing and hunger, Siddhartha sat in meditation and pointed the fingers of his right hand down towards the ground, summoning the earth goddess Toranee. A statue of Toranee is housed in a shrine by the steps to the Big Buddha. Wringing her long hair, Toranee released a flood of water that washed Mara away, helping clear the way for Siddhartha to become the Buddha, the Enlightened One. Though Phuket’s Big Buddha project is no stranger to scepticism and controversy, one thing is certain: those of us who might feel a little lost in paradise at times now have a gentle, guiding beacon to look for in the sky 108 G2
Quick Facts On the Big Buddha hilltop, however, there are encouraging signs to be found. In the large meditation hall on one afternoon, a small group of Thais and foreign tourists are seen receiving blessings from two monks, a peaceful scene familiar to anyone living in Thailand, but for visitors it reveals the contemplative, tender side of Thai culture not always evident in the brash tourist areas. And one need only look to the monument itself for more answers and inspiration. Fittingly for Phuket, an island with hedonistic pleasures aplenty, the Big Buddha silently sends a message of calm and spiritual strength through its seated subduing Mara pose.

Width: 25.45 m at the base. Height: 45m, making it 10 m taller than Christ in Rio de Janeiro and nearly as tall as New York’s Statue of Liberty, which is 46 metres from foot to torch. Made of: Reinforced concrete adorned with white jade Burmese Marble. Daily visitors: As many as 1,500 in high season.
In Buddhist lore, Mara was a demon who was something of an ancient Soi Bangla sex-show tout. During the young prince Siddhartha’s journey towards enlightenment, he was met by this devil of desire. Mara inundated him with a host of naughty temptations, even offering up his own young daughters in an attempt to lure him away from his spiritual path.

HUGHESKRUPICA CONSULTING I heard there is no 'precedent' system of case law in Thailand. Does this mean that defamation cases are irrelevant to my case?
Be careful of What you say!
No. In defamation cases, it is important for a Thai qualified and competent lawyer to search case law for supporting cases under which certain words, actions and statements in certain circumstances were considered defamatory. This will support such lawyer in drafting the 'complaint' to submit to the court, and also at trial. Life became better in many ways after the age of the Internet took off. However, just like making guns and ammunition readily available has proven statistically that gun deaths increase – compare the UK and the USA on gun deaths – when it comes to defamation, the opportunity to defame using the Internet or your email account as a weapon grew exponentially and continues to grow now.
I
studied and grew up in London, which is officially one of the most multicultural cities in the world. It has its challenges and issues, but it also has its fair share of benefits and dynamism due to the diversity of people living there. I am still a fan of London, but have found happiness in life, work and surrounds in Phuket to date. Except for the driving experience.
There is no harmonisation of global law on defamation. If you are in Thailand, or intend to spend time in Thailand, then avoid making assumptions about what is acceptable – or flirting with danger when you write or speak.
In comparison, Phuket is also becoming more and more a diverse place. It is diverse in terms of the Thai people living and working here – many different provinces represented on one island with little islands next to it, a diverse spread of nationalities of tourists, and let’s not forget the long term and most-of-the-year residents who also have a broad mix of backgrounds, languages and cultures. When you put all of these people together in one place, with laws that were written perhaps not with this mix in mind, a certain amount of confusion can ensue. In business circles in Phuket, I have often heard exclamations from foreigners directed to others of "you can’t say that – it's 'slanderous' " and "that’s 'defamatory'"or even "that’s 'libelous'". Not understanding the differences between those acts is a common fundamental error. In the age of Google, some even think they can save a few pennies, pounds or dollars by 'Googling' the Thai law relating to 'defamation' and then take a guess and try to trump the Thai law exams, Thai lawyer license and criminal litigation experience of a Thai Attorneyat-law by simply reading an extract of the Criminal Code and assuming what is 'defamatory' and what is not. I don’t recommend that as an approach to understanding what is criminal, and what is not. In short, be careful what you say, what you write, how you write it, who you write it to, when you write it, how you publish it and how you share it.
“Whoever, in good faith, expresses an opinion or statement: … (3) By way of fair comment on any person or thing subjected to public criticism; or… Shall not be guilty of defamation.”
Surely I can say whatever I like, if it is true ?
No, you should not do that. Filing a criminal complaint is a very serious matter which is reserved for the police or for individuals who choose to conduct a private criminal prosecution. These are two different procedures. If you incorrectly file or file a false criminal complaint, then the other party may sue you for falsely filing criminal complaint against them as per section 175 Criminal Code:
This effectively means that if a personal attack is made and even it if is true, if the attack doesn't "benefit the public", then defamation shall have occurred, provided the other parts of the law regarding defamation are satisfied. In other countries, truth is an ultimate defence to many forms of defamation, slander and libel. The distinction and exceptions in Thailand must be noted and understood.
If I write a review on Tripadvisor – Is that Defamation? It could be in Thailand, if your review is designed to damage and is not subject to any exceptions. However, most of the time, unlikely not.

I am unsure if something was defamation, but I didn’t like it. Can I just file a claim and see if the claim will 'stick'?
However, please note the exception to the exception: “but he shall not be allowed to prove if such imputation concerns personal matters, and such proof will not [be of ] benefit to the public.”

Yes, potentially. Although there is a protection under s.329 Criminal Code which states:
Here are some examples of trouble spots relating to defamation in Thailand: There is in fact an exclusion for violation of defamation laws in the Criminal Code under Section 330 “In case of defamation, if the person prosecuted for defamation can prove that the imputation made by him is true, he shall not be punished.”

I am unhappy with the quality of my condominium unit which I bought in Phuket. I then joined an online forum 'action group' and circulated a good few harsh words on the developer – especially because my sink faucet was faulty. I am now concerned my words might reach the wrong party. Am I in danger?
3 Bedroom, 4 Bathroom Family Home Spacious open plan living, dining and kitchen area In mature development with large swimming pool Secure location in quiet Soi, with CCTV & electric gate Large Patios on Ground & First Floor Large tiled covered areas outside and shade awning Solid Construction in excellent condition Mains water, Electricity, Phone, Cable TV & ADSL Full Chanote Title
“Whoever, taking the false information to charge the person in the Court with the commission of the criminal offence…shall be imprisoned not more than 5 years and fined not more than ten thousand baht.”
I was involved in a court case and the other party’s lawyer started to say untrue and unfair things about me. These statements were translated to me in the courtroom and I was upset. Can I sue the attorney-at-law for defamation? Be careful, because under section 331 Criminal Code: “The Party in a case or party’s lawyer expressing an opinion or statement in the proceedings of the Court in favour of his case, shall not commit an offence of defamation.”

"ISS has been recognised as the World's Best Outsourcing Service Provider 2014"
Lifestyle cycling in Phuket In recent months, Phuket residents seem to have been increasingly bitten by the cycling bug with cyclists coming out in droves especially in the early mornings and evenings. It’s great to see people of all ages taking to the sport and getting their daily dose of exercise. From the south of the island right up until the Sarasin Bridge, cyclists are out on the roads whatever the time of the day. Sadly and dangerously, cyclists are forced to share the road with all sorts of vehicles as there are currently no dedicated bicycle lanes in Phuket. However there are plans from the authorities to improve the road infrastructure which will hopefully include bicycle lanes. Cycling is fast becoming a lifestyle activity and sport and it’s this kind of lifestyle that makes Phuket attractive to many who are considering moving to, and living in, Asia. The warm and sunny weather, great food, training facilities, lower costs of living all add up to be an extremely attractive package. There are professional athletes like Tour-de-France cyclists living and training in Phuket as well as Olympic swimmers, tennis players and even F1 racing drivers who use Phuket as a base or stop-over when they’re in Asia.
Instead of mega projects, developers may consider building smaller housing developments with lesser properties like in a culde-sac environment.
"We are the world champions in outsourcing!" Our 534,200 employees have been voted world best outsourcing provider by IAOP.
What we do
In America or Australia, a cul-de-sac is sometimes called a ‘court’. Cul-de-sacs have many advantages over normal roads; they reduce noise and pollution since there are less cars and traffic passing by; crime is also reduced because there is only one way out of the road, making it easier for any would-be criminal to be caught by neighbors or police who’ve been called to the scene, additionally, very few traffic accidents occur on these roads. A cul-de-sac is much safer for children who are able to play in the quieter street environment.
Closed Circuit TV (CCTV) Access Control System Central Monitoring Service Fire suppression System System Integration Metal Detection Devices Visitor Management Systems Intruder Alarm / Auto Parking System
In short, instead of larger projects, developers should look into building smaller building schemes to cater to this upcoming market.
The need for integration.
There’ll be a big appetite for properties from this lifestyle group in the near future and developers should be looking to cater to this market to pin down exactly what those demands are. Affordable housing is probably right up there in the bucket list (USD$300,000 & below) together with modern, open designs easily incorporating indoor and outdoor living with low maintenance and even lower common area fees. The current idea is to keep monthly costs and expenses as low as possible without sacrificing services, facilities, or security.
The key systems of security are intrusion detection, access control, and video surveillance. If each of these systems is installed separately, administration and training can burden a company or property owner. Intrusion alarms occur on one system, access badges are administered in a stand-alone database, and intelligent digital video technology runs on dedicated computer equipment. Each system requires service, maintenance, administration, and training.

POR TOR FESTIVAL
With its spirit-possessed mediums performing shocking acts of self-flagellation, the Phuket Vegetarian Festival is a colourful spectacle that’s become famous around the world. But a month before the Veg Fest is a more gentle, yet no less important, event for the island’s Hokkien Chinese community: the Por Tor Festival. The Por Tor Festival has a long, rich tradition in Phuket and similar festivals are held throughout Southeast Asia, China and Japan. Known also as the Hungry Ghost Festival, it starts on the first day of the waxing moon on the seventh lunar month of the Chinese calendar. During this month it’s believed that the gates of hell are opened, allowing ghosts trapped inside to return to earth to enjoy feasts prepared by their living relatives. It’s also a time to help those who may be wandering lost in a deathly realm: the forlorn spirits of those who died suddenly or died away from family, or otherwise missed the chance for a proper send-off.
POR TOR FESTIVAL
The festival’s first day is typically spent at the family home, where an elaborate feast is prepared. The table is set with all the dishes placed in the middle, plus a plate of rice for each of the departed relatives. Sticks of incense speared into each serving of rice are lit, then all the family members sit off to the side or go to another room. When the incense is burned through it indicates the ghosts have finished dining, allowing the living relatives to come to the table to start their meal. Feeding their forsaken dead relatives gives the living a chance to show respect to their ancestors. Preparing meals and making offerings at the Chinese temples are acts of loving kindness and mercy, giving shelter and sustenance for suffering, starving spirits.
The name of the festival in Phuket originates from the Chinese god Por Tor, who is the king of hell. He’s the gatekeeper and judge to whom the recently departed must make their case in their quest to reach heaven. At the Por Tor Gong shrine near Saphan Hin in Phuket Town, temple walls are lined with murals depicting this entrance to hell, as well as gruesome scenes of the punishments Por Tor metes out to hell-bound spirits. Every Chinese shrine around Phuket stages ceremonial offering events, but the Por Tor shrine is the main one since it’s dedicated to the Por Tor god. Red turtle cakes, called ang ku in the Hokkien dialect, are the most vivid offerings prepared for the festival, and Phuket is the only known place where such turtles play a ceremonial role. The turtles, which represent longevity, are made with glutinous rice flour and decorated with a fondant icing. The colour red is
chosen for good luck, success and wealth, while some turtles are in white for purity and others are in yellow to represent high status and royalty. Phrases like ‘good luck’ or ‘good health’ are inscribed on the cake as well as name of the person, family or business making the offering. Several shops around Phuket Town specialise in making the turtles, and some order very large and elaborate turtles, costing 50,000 baht or more. Local historian Khun Chaya NaTakuathung, who offers culture tours with Phuket Heritage Trails, says some believe the inclusion of turtles in the festival originated from early Hokkien migrants to Phuket, who had a difficult passage by sea from the Fujian region of China. The journey reminded the migrants of a story in Buddhist legend about a Chinese Taoist monk who made a journey to India to learn more about the Buddhist teachings that were spreading across the region. While at sea a storm swept up. The monk began to pray and a huge turtle rose up out of the sea. Some believe the turtle led the ship to shore while another story tells about how the turtle lifted the ship on its back and carried it to safety. In addition to the turtle cakes, an abundance of food dishes are proffered for the famished lost souls. The temples are brimming with bags of rice, whole roasted ducks, pork and chicken, piles of fresh fruit and vegetables. Even whiskey and wine cooler bottles are on offer, keeping things festive.

'Chok Dee' or 'Good Luck...'
Despite the seemingly dark themes of death and hell, the Por Tor festival is a lively, family-oriented event. Not only is it a feast for the ghosts, but a fascinating feast for the senses that offers an inside peek into Phuket Hokkien culture, perhaps in more accessible and palatable ways than the better-known Vegetarian Festival.

The annual running event took to the island’s roads with more than 5,700 entrants of all ages and abilities from 43 countries competing at a various distances in an atmosphere of community fun and charity fundraising. Mario finished the 42km marathon in a nifty time of 02:55:35. The LPIM trophy complements the third annual partnership with its sister race – the Italian 10km Igrani Run – in an initiative by Laguna’s sponsor, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), which also sponsors the Igrani Run. “I’ve run over 40 marathons since 2005 so far,” said Maglinao. “I had a good start today but I tried to save energy during the first half because I knew it was going to be very hot later in the race. I picked up in the second half and went into the lead after 21km,” he said. “This is my first time at LPIM and I love it. I’m definitely coming back to defend my title next year. For those of you who are training to be a marathoner, keep training and work hard. It’ll bring success. See you at next year’s race,” he concluded.
