A diverse line-up in the Charter/Bareboat class saw a mixed bag of results but after four races it was the locally-based Venture, chartered by an Australian crew, who secured victory by a single point from another Australian crew on Uhuru. “The level of competition this year was some of the best we have seen at Raceweek. It was very encouraging to see a large number of sailors from China taking part for the first time, and also the allfemale crew who performed very well throughout in tricky conditions,” said Byron Jones, Managing Director of organisers Media Business Services Co. Ltd. (MBS).
ADVERTORIAL
The 2015 regatta will likely go down as one of the toughest yet; toughest in terms of the competition – with an impressive line-up of international and local boats and crews, the standard of competition was one of the highest yet – and toughest also in terms of sailing conditions – the tricky winds made it tough for race management to get races underway, while the racers had to navigate light and shifty winds while attempting to maximise performances.

Taking place off Phuket's southeast coast, Phuket Raceweek delivers competitive sailing in beautiful surroundings and in a tropical climate – attractive to many of the international sailors. But Phuket Raceweek is more than just the sailing. Social fun at 2015. Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek.

More than 500 sailors and friends recently took part in the 12th Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek. A regatta that has grown from local roots, Phuket Raceweek is today an international event that welcomes sailors from around the world, including an increasingly large number charter yachts. Of particular note this year was a strong showing from China, while closer to home the all-Thai crew on Windstar raced well against tough competition. The 36 boats competing this year were split over seven classes which included the new Corsair Class and two TP52s racing head-to-head in IRC Racing I class. The two grand-prix TP52's Oi! and Kodo, enjoyed some close head-to-head racing in IRC Racing 1 while the largest class, IRC Racing 2, proved to be one of the most exciting. Jessandra II carried their winning form from Samui Regatta and won four out of the five races to claim the class title. However, the margins were close and across the eight-strong class podium places were shared daily, a sign of how close the competition proved to be.

Out-of-the-box just two weeks earlier, the Corsair Pulse 600s were competing in the new Corsair Class and together with the Multihull Racing and Firefly 850 classes a total of fifteen multihulls were competing this year – one of the largest turnouts in Phuket Raceweek’s history.
And the winner is... IRC Racing I Oi!, Peter Ahern/ Scott Bailey/ Fergus Wilmer (6) Kodo, Ben Copley (8)
Multihull Racing was dominated by the three Phuketbuilt Stealth Cats from the Asia Catamarans yard who took all three places on the podium, while in Firefly 850 four wins from five races saw Twin Sharks secure the class title comfortably.

In the Cruising class were a number of local favourites, including the all-Thai crew on Windstar, the all-female crew on Sail Escapes Fargo Ladies and the largest boat in the fleet and former round-theworld racer, La Flute Enchantée. After a slow start on the opening day, it was the Thai team on Windstar who won the final three races to win the class title.

Onshore, the regatta has earned a well-deserved reputation for putting on some of the best regatta parties around and again this year, the parties were exceptional. An opening party with a Caribbean theme sponsored by Mount Gay Rum and presided over by Dr. Punlob Singhasenee, Vice Governor of Phuket and Ms. Anoma Wongyai, Director of TAT Phuket, kicked off four nights of evening beachfront parties which concluded with a stunning firework display on the final night on which the regatta winners were celebrated. In spite of the tricky conditions this year, sailors left Phuket Raceweek happy and vowing to return next year for the XIII Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek. BOATING.LANGKAWI YACHT CLUB REDEVELOPMENT
Langkawi will surely see the same super yachts passing through and is duty free, with easy and generous terms for yachts to operate in its waters.
ROYAL LANGKAWI
YACHT CLUB
EXPANDS REDEVELOPMENT PLANS
RLYC enjoys a location that Thailand’s marinas can only dream about. Deep in Kuah Harbour, and with stunning islands and beaches on its doorstep, the marina also sits right next door to the island’s ferry terminal – the main lifeline to both mainland Malaysia and Thailand. Standing in the marina looking out to sea, look left and all you see is tropical nature in all its glory; look right and there’s the bustling duty free port-cum-ferry terminal.
RLYC enjoys a location that Thailand’s marinas can only dream about.
The Royal Langkawi Yacht Club (RLYC), Malaysia’s biggest marina and home to the prestigious Royal Langkawi International Regatta, closed its shoreside doors in February this year to embark on an ambitious redevelopment programme aimed at expanding and enhancing the club’s facilities and services. Along the way, the project has been reassessed and many additional features have been added to the original programme.

RLYC’s redevelopment works, targeted for completion at the end of November 2015, involve the modern transformation of this 18-year-old yacht club, while retaining essential nostalgic elements of the original structure for their aesthetic and historical appeal.

BOATING.LANGKAWI YACHT CLUB REDEVELOPMENT
On shore, in the mainclubhouse building, guests will be welcomed into a new spacious lobby and be led up to stylishly designed rooms on the 1st floor. Instead of nine, as originally planned, there will now be 32 rooms – nine of which will be located on the 1st floor of the clubhouse with balconies offering ocean vistas, yet protected from the sun by the unique original roof styling, shaped like a ship’s hull, which has become the club’s iconic feature.
‘Fisherman’s Wharf’ – a brand new lifestyle zone with retail and beauty therapy outlets, office space, marine businesses and F & B options.
The other 23 guest rooms will be built overlooking the water at the new ‘Fisherman’s Wharf’ – a brand new lifestyle zone with retail and beauty therapy outlets, office space and marine related services as well as F & B options. Given its multiple attractions as a duty free location, easy access to Thailand (Phuket is only a few hours away by road), not to mention the anticipated fully-booked super yacht berths and the business they bring with them – and with an open-arms style of welcome to foreign residents – RLYC management is confident that the smarter Phuket boating businesses will see the
20 berths and 23 more guest rooms than the original development plan called for.
From an originally planned in-water expansion of 30 extra berths, marina management have decided to increase that to 50 new berths of 12 metres, 17 metres, 20 metres and a number of new berths to accommodate super yachts up to 80 metres.
RLYC management is confident that the smarter Phuket boating businesses will see the advantage of setting up an office in Langkawi. It’s interesting to note that, while Thailand ponders how to attract more super yachts and how to deal with them in a legal framework, Langkawi (who will surely see the same super yachts passing through) is duty free, has easy and generous terms for yachts to operate in its waters and – as of November – will have increased its capacity to put on a professional welcome for these highspending ‘tourists’.
RLYC is positioned as the ideal stopover for travellers up and down the west coast of the Malay peninsula, whether by land or sea, quite apart from its attraction as a destination in its own right. Established 18 years ago, the club has maintained its status as a prominent destination for sailors by providing worldclass marina and berthing facilities, as well as food and beverage services in an idyllic island setting. For more information about leasing of shop lots and office space at RLYC, contact: office@langkawiyachtclub.com
All berths in the marina will be equipped with new power systems from 60Amps up to 400Amps, sanitation pumps, safety and fire-fighting equipmentas well as water and fuel for the boats. Boat owners will be assured of 24-hour security patrols.

Apart from the world-famous Hooters girls, Hooters restaurants are all about great quality and good value food, fantastic service and a fun atmosphere. The menu remains true to the ideals of the original founders of the concept: to provide delicious, yet simple food that people love to eat and want to come back for again and again.
Menu items include our signature and world-famous buffalo chicken wings tossed in Hooters’ wing sauce, juicy ‘more than a mouthful’ whopping 250g premium beef burgers, grilled seafood dishes, fresh green salads, sandwiches, and tangy BBQ pork ribs. The growing popularity of wellness as both a holistic concept and a destination-based vacation activity is astounding – and Phuket is right up there when it comes to meeting the wellness demands of tourists and locals alike. Going back only 15 years or so, the nearest things Phuket had to ‘wellness destinations’ were very basic herbal saunas, offering no-frills steam and traditional massage and – if you were lucky – cold drinks consumed on plastic garden chairs. Phuket has come a long way since then!

HEALTH & BEAUTY.THE WELLNESS BOOM
Whichever corner of the wellness ‘market’ you look at, Phuket can cater for it – and isn’t a tropical paradise far better placed to pursue inner and outer wellness than less captivating, and more frenetic, urban destinations? There’s no shortage of options in Phuket today, and the range of facilities and associated products seems to expand in the blink of an eye. Facilities ranging from yoga salas, meditation resorts, detoxing programmes, fitness centres, spas – and the latest trend to improve your body from the inside out, the vegetarian-cum-juice resort.
If you’re looking for a more ‘hardcore’ form of wellness, you’ll find a bewildering array of different venues offering training in Thailand’s national sport aimed at strengthening and controlling your body: Muay Thai. One inescapable fact is that Phuket’s wellness offerings are world class – whether we’re talking martial arts, more ‘standard’ fitness training, hospital-based offerings, natural products or wellness resorts. And, in expat Phuket 2015, if you haven’t got your very own personal fitness trainer on call and a juicer in the kitchen cupboard, you haven’t arrived.
Whichever corner of the wellness ‘market’ you look at, Phuket can cater for it.

HEALTH & BEAUTY.THE WELLNESS BOOM
Phuket enjoys many advantages as a wellness destination, advantages that put it in the forefront of the challengers for international market share.
Thanyaphura
Phuket enjoys many advantages as a wellness destination, advantages that put it in the forefront of the challengers for international market share. Formerly known primarily for its great beaches and naughty nightlife, Phuket has grown up and smart travellers are now coming for a good balance of healthy fun and relaxation and are ripe for the temptation of a wellness experience – whether that means a residential detox, a meditation course, Muay Thai lessons, dental treatment or cosmetic surgical body adjustment. With everyone from small shop-house based ‘traditional’ spas to organic juice purveyors getting in on the act, there’s no doubt that the leader in the field in Phuket – indeed a global leader – is Thanyaphura. Thanyapura started life as an international school, quickly became the biggest and most advanced sporting facility in the region and now encompasses wellness on a mind-blowing scale. The stated aim of their health gurus is to “…help people globally maintain their youth and stay healthy, to improve their vitality and performance and to accompany them through their life while guiding them on the path of wellbeing, anti-aging, prevention, regeneration and healing… “ Whew! And that’s just the body. What about the mind? The Thanyapura Mind Centre “…is at the forefront of the global movement seeking to bring the benefits of mental training into the modern mainstream,” it says on the website, adding that it “…brings the ancient contemplative practices together with rigorous modern scientific methods, including neuroscience and psychology.” (For more information about Thanyapura, see Page 45.)

HEALTH & BEAUTY.THE WELLNESS BOOM
This is all well and good, but what about all the other, smaller and diverse ‘mind and body’ businesses on Phuket? There’s no doubt that Phuket – with its tropical climate and easy-going way of life, combined with relatively welldeveloped infrastructure – is the perfect place both to operate a wellness business and to come for a dose of holiday wellness. But, with a handful of notable exceptions, Phuket seems to be selling itself short. When businesses here lift their heads up and compete on the world stage, success often follows. Witness Phuket-based Lemongrass, makers of spa and beauty products. From very humble beginnings, they now have 40 retail outlets in
11 countries and have a thriving export business. Or Phuket International Hospital, who have their internationally peripatetic ambassador for surgical body enhancements filling beds wherever he goes. Phuket needs to invest in coherent marketing and advertising strategies to draw attention to its world-class wellness capability. It needs to target potential wellness travellers at point of origin, to make visitors already with us aware of what they can take advantage of while they’re here – and to educate the island’s wealthy Thai and expatriate community on enhancing its overall wellness. The traditional (and not-so-traditional) spas of Phuket enjoy a long-standing reputation. Phuket has been offering unique and traditional treatments, including herbs, steam and massage, as far back as 1767, when monks played a strong role. Phuket should now find ways to capitalise on that existing reputation and lure people to our island in search of more than just a beach holiday... or a shopping excursion.

TRAVEL.KOH LANTA
TRAVEL.KOH LANTA
LAID BACK LANTA
49
We’re not talking the Robinson Crusoe experience… but forget the rat race and fast food outlets (in fact, Lanta holds only a handful of well-known convenience stores). Catch it soon though; much like Phuket and its nearer environs, it’s inevitable that a faster paced way of life is around the corner.
A TRIP BACK INTO ‘WHAT WAS’ LIFE ON THE ‘ISLAND OF LONG BEACHES’
The 30km long and 6km wide Koh Lanta Yai or ‘Big Lanta Island’, is the largest of the 52-island archipelago known as Mu Ko Lanta National Park that falls under the jurisdiction of Krabi province, southwest of Phuket, which is the primary destination for tourists.
The small town of Saladan at the northern tip, where the ferry pier is, is the liveliest, while the further south you go, the atmosphere is conducive to long walks along the stretches of sand and for viewing the island’s spectacular sunsets. Beach bars and restaurants are ready to quench your thirst and offer quick bites, as well as family or intimate meals as the sun shines or as the evening sets in.
Watch out for the macaque monkeys on the lookout for your valuables and whatever goodies in your bag they can eat. So what is there to do on Lanta? By all means, get your fill of the beautiful beaches. There’s Klong Dao, the most popular beach, but by most standards not busy, with restaurants and stalls of various cuisines, bars and nighttime entertainment. The 4km-long Pra Ae (Long Beach), with plenty of accommodation is more tranquil. Pristine Kantiang Beach, home to the island’s first boutique hotel, Pimilai Resort & Spa, surpasses all in terms of its seclusion and tranquility, while at the southern tip, there are few souls kicking sand and disrupting your tanning sessions…
Secluded, quiet and mellow, Koh Lanta is a breath of fresh air compared to the rest of the busy, party prone ‘greater Phuket’ area.
The end of the road on the southwest of Lanta holds a national park of which Ta Nod Beach and Lighthouse are prominent features. A photogenic area, the small beaches are pristine, the public grounds well-manicured around the rangers’ station and restaurant and the surrounding forest brimming with exotic vegetation and animal life under a rich, thick canopy. Walk the 2km along the nature trail and spend the night in a tent to appreciate the unspoiled expanse. Oh, just watch out for the macaque monkeys on the lookout for your valuables and whatever goodies in your bag they can eat. Even the park rangers are mindful and on the run from these cute but persistent thieves!
Pristine sandy beaches on the west coast, with tropical vegetation covering the relatively flat area of the island and the more mountainous tree hugging region to the south, the natural beauty of the island is mesmerising. Couple it with the fact that the island is home to only a small year-round population, with an influx of visitors during high season from November to April, and the island is truly a Shangri-la for those seeking a place to chill.
Keen to scuba dive or learn / upgrade your skills? There are several reknowned sites to discover, among which Hin Daeng and Hin Muang are noted to be amongst the best in the world. Lessons and tours can be booked in Saladan. Koh Rok Nok to the west of Lanta offers the deserted island experience: overnight accommodation and facilities are available with the chance to appreciate the remoteness and, above all, the land and marine life of the area.

Escape into the magic of Lanta and CHILL on an island of natural beauty.
HOW TO GET TO KOH LANTA On the main road that traverses the width of Lanta Island is the viewpoint that overlooks part of the east coast, the mainland and the channel separating the land bodies, as well as several smaller islands to the south. Stop and admire the view and get a fill of food and drink at one of the several restaurants perched there – then continue downhill through fields and farmland. Charming Lanta Old Town, on the east coast in the south of the island, was once Lanta’s port and commercial centre and is now the district capital. Stroll down the wide street and you’ll find waterfront buildings on stilts, constructed of dark timbers. This is the architectural style of the days several centuries ago when Chinese and Arab boats stopped enroute to trade goods with merchants in ports around the area, including Phuket to the northwest and destinations south such as the island of Penang in Malaysia.
Old Town has several fine restaurants and unique places to shop: Jumbo Hammock sells colourful and (very) comfortable cotton and waterproof hammocks suited for lying or sitting on, as well as storing stuff. These are woven by remote tribes in northern Thailand.
Traditional longtail boat tours offer intrepid explorers the opportunity to discover areas even more off the beaten path.
Arrival to Koh Lanta is by boat. Ferries run from Krabi, Phi Phi and Phuket several times a day during the high season from November through April and early May. Service is suspended during the monsoon season. Speedboats are also available. Transport is also available by personal vehicle or mini van via the car ferry. A bridge is under construction that will connect Koh Lanta Yai to Koh Lanta Noi to the north.
Several services offer boat tours departing from the southern part of the east coast, thereby offering intrepid explorers the opportunity to discover areas even more off the beaten path. Lanta Longtail / Sun Island Tours, for example, offer unique tours by traditional longtail boat, including trips around Lanta and also to nearby islands, which include Koh Ngai and Koh Muk (with its absolutely stunning Emerald Cave, a sinkhole containing water that is flooded with sunlight and surrounded by jungle). Travel to other islands – Koh Ma, Koh Churk and Koh Kradan – can also be achieved by longtail boats and speed boats.
The area provides safe haven for boats from the high winds and seas during the monsoon season, while the long pier makes departure for, or arrival from, sea-going journeys possible at all-tides. If you plan to travel to Koh Lanta in March, be sure to take in the Lanta Festival, which showcases traditional culture and features ceremonial demonstrations, performances, folk games and water sports competitions, as well as food booths serving local delicacies.
Most resorts have pickup trucks and mini vans that will transport passengers to and from the ferry pier or to prearranged destinations. Tourist services will provide a similar service. The best way to get around Lanta is to rent a motorbike. The going rate is 200 Baht per day during the low season, but is slightly higher during the busier months between November and April. There are also tuk-tuks and motorcycle taxis, some of which have sidecars to transport more people. Note that it is advisable to agree on a price before setting off. Accommodation: Scores of places to stay that cater to tourists of all budgets scatter the beachfront of, or are within walking distance of, the nine beaches. There is also accommodation in Old Lanta Town and at the promontory on the southeast of the island. From the budget minded, and gung ho traveller wishing to get out on the road from early in the morning, to those seeking the comfort and pampering that a luxury hotel provides, there is a place to stay for everyone. “Escape into the magic of Lanta and CHILL on an island of natural beauty. “

Venture down to the southern tip of the island to the sea gypsy village, past small lookout restaurants, to the resort with its retro-style seating area on stilts. Take in the sea views and enjoy a well-deserved cold beer after a long journey! Beauty and diversity plus a balance of modernity and tranquility (with the emphasis being on the latter more mentally soothing element) characterise Koh Lanta Yai. Although the island may offer a greater appeal to an older, less party animal crowd, there are still activities to do for the more active. There is a nightlife on the island, just ask a local!
PEOPLE.HENRIK JEPPESEN
27 years old, and with a goal to become the next ‘World's Youngest Traveler’, Henrik Jeppesen from Denmark is a mere 20 countries away from fulfilling his dream, he told me over a cup of coffee at Angsana Laguna Phuket where he was staying.
53
HENRIK JEPPESEN Tell us something about yourself.
How do you handle constantly being on the go?
I was born in 1988 in the Danish countryside, a place where nothing much happens. I knew early on that travelling would be my passion. When I was a boy I dreamed of visiting 50 European countries because I thought the world outside of Europe was a dangerous place [laughs].
I’ve got a lot of patience; over time I’ve found peace in my body and mind. At one point in the past I was very stressed out and even miserable, and then I learned about utilising the pressure points in my body. In fact, I studied old Buddhist techniques that help me relax.
Once I grew older, my dream of travelling to many places came true and by 2010 I'd set a new goal: to visit 100 countries. That’s when I started my hotel blog and began to travel on a full-time basis.
What led you to start the blog about hotels? And when did you decide to pursue the world record? When I first started the project it was all about exploring the world’s luxurious hotels and best dining options, partnering with the best places and featuring them on my website. But at one point few years back I realised that I’d already been to more countries than an average person, so visiting every country and territory in the world became the next step. The current Youngest Traveler was 37 when he set the record, so my odds are really good since I have only 20 countries left. After that, I’ll keep visiting places at a somewhat slower pace.
“My mission is to inspire people to travel the world. To me, travelling is about respecting, and being kind to, all people.” How do you go about visiting all those countries? For five years now I’ve been travelling almost every single day. Starting the project wasn’t easy and it required an investment before the hotels came fully on board. So by 2012 I’d used up my entire bank loan and I’ve been on a very low budget ever since. I go through about 200 emails a day and getting everything organised – booking flights, communicating with hotels, arranging visas and airport pick-ups – is quite demanding as I do it all myself. As I have no income, my budget decides how I go about each trip; right now I’m in Thailand where I’ve been many times before because my visa for another country is being sorted out.
Do you find travelling to all these places risky? I’ve been through various challenges at times and I’ve also had great, unexpected, positive human experiences. For instance, in Somalia I didn’t pay for my visa and that saved me a precious US$100. When we landed, I purposely left the aircraft last and told the immigration officers about my mission. That was a risky move on my part but it ended well. I believe in treating people honestly and kindly, and I trust what my intuition says about people.
What are the best and worst aspects your lifestyle? Of course, the best thing is that I get to explore the world, meet people and get to know their culture. But also I only have a few friends and the odds are high that I’ll never meet the people I connected with during my trips again. It’s a solitary life.

“I was very stressed out and even miserable. Then I learned about utilising the pressure points in my body. In fact, I studied old Buddhist techniques.” What advice can you give those who’d like to do what you're doing? The best advice I have to give is to cut out all the extra costs, to drop everything that isn’t necessary. I travel with very little; I have almost no luggage. But I actually believe that the biggest challenge is first having the courage to go out and do it!
How can people travel cheaply? One of the key things is utilising low-cost companies as well as their last-minute deals that include tickets for just a few US dollars. Rather than choosing as few flights as possible to destinations, opt for a slower and longer trip, pick cheaper interconnecting flights and allow yourself a few days at each of the stops for exploration. Here in Thailand, AirAsia – for example – offers fantastic deals every so often.
You’ve seen most of the world; do you have a favourite place? My favourite place in the world is Cape Town in South Africa – I’m even planning to move there sometime next year. South Africa has beautiful people and there’s so much to see and do; you can
“For instance, in Somalia I didn’t pay for my visa and that saved me a precious US$100... That was a risky move on my part but it ended well.” live such a rich life there. There’s a lot of diversity and all kinds of fantastic food for just pennies. Of course it isn’t ideal, we all know about their crime rates. But I choose to be an optimist – why not believe that over time we can make things better? In the end, no matter where you live, there are things to like and dislike.
What will you do once you’ve set the record? In the future I’d like to experience a more stable life, a life that has a base. I’ll still travel a lot but in a more ‘human’ way, exploring the places I really like; there’s always something new to see. But I do think that having a home, friends and relationships, as well as an income, is all very important. Perhaps I’ll write travel books, as sharing the knowledge I’ve gained on my travels will always be important to me.

TRAVEL.ANCIENT AYUTTHAYA
TRAVEL.ANCIENT AYUTTHAYA
Ancient
Thailand's former palatial capital from 1350 to 1767 – with three palaces and over 400 temples – Ayutthaya today is laid back and relaxed. Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, the ruins of the past mix effortlessly with a modern landscape.
to top things off, you can board at either Hua Lamphong or Bang Sue railway stations, both of which are accessible by the MRT. The railcars make the trip in 80 minutes. Slower trains take about 20 minutes longer. For train schedules and other info checkout the State Railway of Thailand’s website (in English) at www.railway.co.th
Getting there (from Bangkok). It’s a snap (and incredibly cheap) with 21 trains a day on the country’s smoothest railbed. Go in airconditioned splendour in a diesel railcar for a pricey 10 US dollars or so. Or, if your budget is tight, try 3rd class for less than a dollar! And
Arriving in Ayutthaya. You’ll think you’re a superstar when you step off the train. Enjoy the limelight, but give the adoring tuk-tuk and samlor drivers a pass. Instead, head for the delicious smell of BBQ chicken. Walk 100 metres down the side road with the roasting chicken and take the ferry boat to the other side. You’ll no longer be a celebrity, but you’ll be closer to most of the sights and transport costs will be halved. By the way, take a sack of the chicken with you. It’s the best in town. Getting around. Ayutthaya is loaded with samlors (bicycle rickshaws), motorbike taxis and art-deco tuk tuks. The tuk-tuks are older than grandpa but spectacular when gussied up. Single journeys on all transport costs about 20 baht and you can also rent your wheels by the hour or day. If you’re athletic and immune to sunstroke, rent a bicycle from one of the guesthouses and get into the latest health craze. Don’t expect a Lance Armstrong model, but it’ll be cheap.

TRAVEL.ANCIENT AYUTTHAYA
TRAVEL.ANCIENT AYUTTHAYA
An interesting, but pricier, option is to rent a boat. You can choose a vessel at Chan Kasem. Stop, tour and then get back on your ‘yacht’ for more sights. It’s a great way to see some of the less accessible ruins.
Even if you are not big on ruins and historical sites, Ayutthaya should still be on your hit list. It’s a great introduction to Thai life outside of Bangkok. There’s a charm to rural Thailand rarely seen in the capital city. Ayutthaya is a place where you can find a great adventure.
What to see. Don’t be a Cheap Charlie. Buy a guidebook! There are some inexpensive guides on Ayutthaya that only cover, you got it, Ayutthaya. Unlike that thing with a planet on it, they aren’t the size and weight of a phonebook. Essential sights include Wat Phra Si Sanphet, Wat Mongkhon Bophit, Wat Na Phra Meru, Wat Thammikarat, Wat Ratburana and Wat Phra Mahathat. These are all found within the UNESCO historical park. Once at the park, you can hoof it from one wat to another.
opposite Wat Ratburana and has passable food and a nice view of the temple. If you want to dine on the river, there are four floating restaurants where Thanon Ratchana crosses the river. But it’s Ayutthaya’s hawker food that’s outstanding. If you’re around in the evening, the Night Market is the place to go. At other times, take your pick from what you see on the street. Worried about your tummy? Stick to hot items like the BBQ chicken near the train station. I hesitate to mention it, but Ronald McDonald and friends have discovered Ayutthaya. They hang out near the central market. Ayutthaya sizzles so drink lots water.
Taking a Boat to Ayutthaya
There are two museums worth visiting. Chao Sam Phraya National Museum, near the aforementioned wats, provides an informative introduction to sculptures of Buddha. Over by the night market and main post office is Chanthakasem National Museum. Housed in a former palace, this museum contains a spectacular collection of gold artifacts unearthed from Ayutthaya’s ruins. There’s a lot more to see, including several worthwhile ruins away from central Ayutthaya.
Several companies operate combination boat/bus trips to Ayutthaya. They start with the boat and typically include a stop at Bang-Pa-In to visit the old Royal Summer Palace. The return from Ayutthaya is by bus. Tour price usually includes meals, an English-speaking guide, entrance fees in Ayutthaya and frequently round-trip transport from your hotel to the boat. The boat provides an excellent way to see life along the Chao Phraya, but the time-consuming boat trip leaves little time for visiting Ayutthaya.
Food and drink. Formal restaurants are few and far between in Ayutthaya. And those I’ve tried have been far from spectacular. Thai tourists often head to Moradok-Thai on Thanon Ratchana for the air-conditioning, wine and decent eats. Malakor is conveniently located
windowonphuket.com
Spending the night. If you decide to spend the night, Ayutthaya has numerous hotels and guest houses to suit pretty much every budget. The more sumptuous digs include the Ayutthaya Grand Hotel and the Ayothaya Riverside Hotel overlooking the Pasak River near the floating restaurants. One of the top spots is the four-star Krungsri River Hotel, located near the Ayothaya Riverside, with views of the Pasak River.
You can book a tour at a roadside tour counter or in your hotel. If you prefer to be independent, simply ‘Google’ boat trip to Ayutthaya and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

Okay. Now you have the basics. The rest is up to you. Ayutthaya opens a world never seen elsewhere. To find it, hop on a train or a boat and head for a touch of the past and a day of adventure. You’ll be glad that you did.

ISS Security services
Phuket's quality tile boutique Discover the best solution for your floor or wall, both exterior and interior ADVERTORIAL
Leader in electronic security system integration The need for integration
In stock Italian porcelain tiles and the highest quality European certified porcelain tiles from China, providing superior materials for home and office renovations as well as larger commercial, residential and condominium projects.
The key systems of security are intrusion detection, access control, and video surveillance. If each of these systems is installed separately, administration and training can burden a company or property owner. Intrusion alarms occur on one system, access badges are administered in a stand-alone database, and intelligent digital video technology runs on dedicated computer equipment. Each system requires service, maintenance, administration, and training. ISS single system enables greater flexibility to add security components that can be easily integrated into the overall system, keeping the cost of capital expenditure low, and requiring little additional training.
With showrooms in Phuket and Bangkok, our boutiques offer compact, unconfused displays, taking the "bazaar" out of the tile showroom and presenting you with an easy reference point for all your floor and wall solutions.
We offer a wide range of solutions to flooring requirements in pricing, whilst maintaining the same high standards of material performance and customer care.

LEGAL MATTERS.SUPRISING LAWS
LEGAL MATTERS.SUPRISING LAWS
Surprising Laws in Thailand Jared Spindel
O
ne of the questions I’m often asked is what some of the differences are between Thai law and law in the places I previously practiced, Canada and the United States. My standard answer involves a brief overview of the differences between civil law and common law and is almost always a snooze fest. It’s a fine question to ask, as it seems interesting, but it usually takes around three seconds for boredom to overwhelm everyone in the room. That’s usually because I’m asked the question in a business context, and the professional guy that I am, I feel compelled to give a professional, albeit boring answer.
Passing school buses Back home in Canada, you’re not allowed to pass a school bus that is picking up or dropping off a child. In Thailand, all you’re required to do is slow down and pass the bus with care.
Fortunately for you, my purpose here is not just to inform you, but also to entertain you. As such, I’m not going to address the boring differences between Thai law and law in Canada in the USA, but instead highlight some of the surprising, lesser known laws I’ve discovered in my time in Thailand.
Pregnant drivers There is nothing wrong with asking a pregnant woman to drive somewhere. Unless, that is, you are her employer. In such case, if you require her to drive somewhere, you could face up to six months in prison.
Possession of playing cards As you may already know, gambling is largely prohibited in Thailand. It’s legal to play the state sanctioned lottery and to lay down a few baht on the ponies at the track in Bangkok, but that’s it. What you may not know is that the mere possession of 121 or more playing cards is enough for you to face a prison sentence of up to three years. So, if you must sit through the occasional game of “Go Fish” with your kids, be sure to have no more than two decks of cards in the house, or the next game you play may be with your cellmate (and if this happens, remember to only have 2 or less decks of cards in your cell).
Sexually harassing employees Do you feel the urge to slap an employee’s butt every now and then? If so, I hope you got your butt slapping in before 2008. Between 1998, when the Labor Protection Act was enacted, and a 2008 amendment, it was illegal to sexually harass women and children in the workplace, but the prohibition on sexual harassment did not extend to men.
Surnames upon divorce After getting married, either spouse may use the last name of the other according to agreement. This probably won’t shock you, although you might be somewhat surprised by the progressive gender neutrality of this law. What is more surprising is that if a marriage is dissolved by divorce or a judicial decision, the spouses MUST revert to their former names. If a marriage ends by death, however, the surviving spouse may opt to keep the married name.
Holiday entitlement While there are a minimum of 13 holidays that employees get to enjoy (usually coinciding with government or other traditional holidays), employees do not get to choose the dates of these days off work. When it comes to vacation days, employees in Thailand are not guaranteed any in their first year of work. Once a full year of work has been completed, employees in Thailand are guaranteed only six vacation days by law. The number of vacation days guaranteed by law does not increase any further; an employee of 30 years is still only guaranteed six vacation days (in addition to the 13 statutory holidays) by law.
Motorcycling monks If you’re caught riding a motorcycle without a helmet, you could face a 500 baht fine. Unless you’re a monk, in which case it’s legal to not wear a helmet.
Impersonating a schoolboy/schoolgirl It is illegal to wear a student uniform or clothes similar to a student uniform if (a) you’re not a student and don’t have special permission to wear the uniform; and (b) it's for the purpose of deceiving another person into believing you’re a student. This is a somewhat reasonable law, as you can imagine there being sinister purposes for the deception. The penalty, however? Up to 1,000 Thai baht.
Red lights It may surprise you to learn that cars in Thailand are required to stop at red lights.
Impolite taxi drivers Female construction workers There is no prohibition against employing female construction workers. However, if a female construction worker is employed, it is illegal to require her to work on scaffold ten or more metres above the ground. Nine metres, that’s fine. Ten metres, that may lead to a prison sentence of up to six months.
Horn honking
It was illegal to sexually harass women and children in the workplace, but the prohibition on sexual harassment did not extend to men.
The Labour Protection Act explicitly allows people who get sterilized to have as much time off from work as a doctor prescribes.
So, you’re driving along the road and you see your old pal walking by and want to get his attention. You better roll down your window and yell, because under the Land Traffic Act you could be fined if you honk your horn for any reason other than to avoid an accident.
Sterilization = Time off work Have you already used up your annual leave, but you still want some time off from work? You should consider getting sterilized. The Labour Protection Act explicitly allows people who get sterilized to have as much time off from work as a doctor prescribes.

I’m a bit young to have watched the late 70s / early 80s TV show “Taxi”. However, I believe that many of the characters in that show would have had trouble operating in Thailand, as taxi drivers in Thailand may be fined if they are impolite or sarcastic to passengers. I did a few minutes of research for this admittedly poor Taxi joke, and Wow, what a cast! Judd Hirsch! Danny DeVito! Christopher Lloyd! Andy Kaufman! Tony Danza! Maybe the next article will be a review of Taxi...

Gems you won’t find in guidebooks
PHUKET INDY MARKET Indy Market (Laad Ploi Kong in Thai) is located on Limelight Avenue, along Dibuk Road in the heart of Phuket Town. Although relatively small, it has a unique vibe and is a favourite gathering spot for creative characters. This lively market operates on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 4:30pm till 10pm. It’s very popular with locals, especially teenagers and young adults, as it features a stage with live music and performances in addition to food and shopping stalls.
blend in with the feel-good crowd. The food options, too, are plentiful and tempting – Thai-style kebabs, spicy salads, deep-fried pork and giant crispy rotis (Thai pancakes), among other delicious snacks.
Here, you’ll find all kinds of handcrafted goods as well as reasonably priced clothing and accessories. It’s a great place for unique gifts such as personalised handmade key chains, artistic handbags from Bangkok, a selection of appealing cacti and distinctive jewellery pieces, to mention just a few of the many items for sale.
According to Khun Narong Promjitta, the market’s manager, Indy Market’s concept is ‘Express Yourself’. Since 2010 when it opened, the management’s aim has been to make it into more than just a marketplace. Having such a street was Mr. Narong’s vision – to give Phuket’s teenagers a place to express themselves creatively.
At Phuket Indy Market you can also buy makeup, have your nails seen to, or even have your portrait done and, of course, you can enjoy a cool drink as you
But it’s not only Phuket’s teenagers who get to express themselves at Indy Market; vendors are founts of creativity through their products, and visitors do the

same with their colourful clothing and accessories at this oasis of freedom and open-mindedness. During its first year, when the volume of guests was still manageable, the management was able to coordinate the style and theme for the following week and vendors would show up wearing a funny hat, for example.
play, seeking exposure outside their family and school circles. Some performers come from other provinces, and for many this is their very first chance to get honest feedback from a broader audience. Additionally, every 1st December, on International AIDS Awareness Day, there’s a music contest that’s become well known over the years.
As the market gained momentum, new ideas were introduced, but essentially the main theme hasn’t changed and this is still a creative hub that embraces everyone looking to express their individuality.
Welcoming young talent is something the management is proud of, especially as the first year’s winner, Tanon Jumroen, went on to win the Thai version of the famous international show, The Voice.
The market’s music podium is open to all and embraces musicians and entertainers alike; anyone who love to play music and perform. Often, high school bands

designed by well-known Thai actors and pop singers. The clothes sell for 180 baht with 20 baht going to the charity. The market is also a home to the second ‘Coworking’ space on the island (www.HATCHphuket.com). Coworking spaces are a growing global movement and they differ from the typical office environment by being available for rent by the hour, day, or month to help independent professionals and organisations. These creative offices offer a place of synergy for those who otherwise work in isolation and can be a great platform for meeting other independent workers and frequent travellers who don’t have fixed offices. As the Indy Market approaches its fifth anniversary this September, the management continues to hone and improve the concept. They’re determined to keep the stall rental prices low, keeping it accessible to all. The biggest upcoming changes include altering the layout and grouping goods according to their types: there’ll be sections for handmade arts and crafts, fashion, accessories, beauty services, food and much more.
Whether you’ve never visited this little gem, or you’re already a regular, make sure you head to Limelight Avenue on a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday afternoon and evening at least once in a while. Come alone or bring along your family and friends – either way, you’re bound to leave richer in spirit because of this unique Phuket experience.

Day tour of the viewpoints For a change from the beach, rent a car or motorbike and take in some of the island’s breathtaking views. Start at Rang Hill, to the northwest of Phuket City. A winding tree-lined road takes you right to the summit of Rang Hill, where a sala offers shade during the day. Once there you can enjoy views of the city and beaches on the south and southwest of the island. Then on to Khao Kad on Cape Panwa, which offers wonderful 360° views of the Andaman Sea beaches and neighbouring islands from a different perspective. There’s a stiff climb up 138 steps but once there you’re rewarded by refereshing breezes and sunsets here are on a par with Cape Promthep. Next
drive across the island to the west coast and take in Kata-Karon’s 'Three Bays Viewpoint'. It’s located between Nai Harn and Kata Noi Beaches and offers superb views on several levels. From here Kata Noi, Kata and Karon beaches can be seen and out to sea is Koh Poo (Island). Along the way between viewpoints, keep an eye out for roadside refreshments or plan your day using Where to Eat in Phuket to identify great places for drinks and food.
Old Phuket Town
Ton Sai and Bang Pae Waterfalls
A hundred years ago, Phuket was a prosperous tin mining town, and was an international centre with a large community of Chinese and Europeans. They built beautiful homes in the style called Sino-Portuguese – terraced townhouses with narrow frontages and accommodations stretching back from the road. The beautifully furnished interiors often included walled gardens and Chinese inspired decorations. Explore Rommanee, Talang, Yaowarat and Dibuk Roads where the buildings have been lovingly restored to their former glory and now feature antique shops, speciality restaurants and more.
Ton Sai and Bang Pae Waterfalls: Located in the Khao Phra Thaeo National Park, these waterfalls, at 18 metres high, are the tallest on the island. Combine a visit to the falls with a tour of the park and see the Gibbon Rehabilitation Centre, where gibbons captured as babies for illegal aspects of the tourist trade are gently reintroduced to their natural environment. Near the falls are a restaurant and several kiosks selling inexpensive snacks. Take along a bottle of wine and make a picnic… 24 G2

APCWL Lifestyle Expo has over 20 premium cigar brands confirmed and has attracted some of the leading companies in the luxury products and consumables industries, including Beluga Vodka, CRAFT ‘Craft Beers’, Whisgars™, The ChindAsia Club, Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show and Phuket International Boat Show (PIMEX). The event is also pleased to announce two new landmark exhibitors, Pernod Ricard and William Grant & Sons. These world-famous companies are global leaders in the whisky, spirits and wine industries and hold some of the most prestigious brand portfolios in these sectors.
Hillman Lentz, CEO and President of organisers Hathor Investment Group, explains: “I never imagined such an overwhelming response to a launch event. These are exactly the sort of conditions that will foster the growth of APCWL Lifestyle Expo as a groundbreaking event. The three-day event will contain gala dinners, private invitational parties and an APCWL Lifestyle Conference, featuring educational workshops and forums with special guest speakers. PHUKET LIVING.MAI KHAO MARINE TURTLE FOUNDATION
Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation Background During its grand opening celebrations in March 2002, the JW Marriott Phuket Resort and Spa and the Minor Hotel Group donated US$45,000 to launch the Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation to raise funds and awareness of the plight of the critically endangered giant leatherback turtles as well as other turtle species nesting in the area Mai Khao is one of the few Phuket beaches that continue to welcome nesting turtles. Turtle eggs are also rescued from nearby beaches where a necessary natural and peaceful environment can no longer be guaranteed. The eggs are then given to the Phuket Marine Biological Centre (PMBC), Department of National Park and the Royal Thai Navy who provide a safe home for them to hatch in; one where the young turtles can gain strength before finding their true home in the sea. The foundation funds these programmes.
Growth Over the last few years, the Foundation has broadened its environmental efforts to not only ensure the conservation of leatherback and other turtles but also to preserve the environment with the involvement of local communities, schools, universities, government organisations and other NGOs.
