A trendy little café with a nice 360 degree viewpoint. Very popular with locals and visitors. They have a menu or you can just get coffee and a cake . BILL O'LEARY
Bill O'Leary 26 years ago, Bill O'Leary arrived in Phuket as crew aboard a yacht. Fast forward to 2013 and he's helping develop the marine side of three Malaysian government-backed mega tourism projects. Here's how he went from yachty 'yobbo' to entrepreneur, artist, musician, avowed family man – and now corporate 'suit'. Where are you from? Charleville – Outback Queensland, Australia Tell us something about your ‘early years’. I’m the second of four kids to an Irish immigrant Flying Doctor who worked for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) for 30 years in rural, then far north Queensland. My childhood was a blur of high-flying awe punctuated by institutionalised terror. The awe was flying with Dad when he’d let me pilot, pull teeth, give injections and eat snake amongst the full-blooded Aboriginals. These adventures were offset by long terrifying stints of Catholic boarding-school brutality. Dad was a living legend in the outback and had hundreds of amazing stories we put into a book and screenplay after he died. I remember one flying clinic where he’d circumcised dozens of infants in one session at Aurukun Mission up on the Cape. He reckoned he and the pilot kept the left-overs in a Vegemite jar full of sawdust and used them for months after – as Barramundi bait. Half a dozen end-bits skewered onto a 3/0-sized hook caught so many Barramundi he reckoned it was cheating. When did you move to Phuket and from where? In 1987 after filming ‘Dead Calm’, I sailed on the famous yacht Stormvogel from Hamilton Island on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef through Indonesia to Phuket. How well did you know Phuket before moving? I’d never heard of it before. I was pronouncing it wrong from the start. The Aussie yobo in me loved the notion of sailing off to some magical island in ‘Thigh-land’ called ‘Fwwwuuu-ket’ and visiting those amazing rock formations at ‘Fee Fee Island’ and ‘Fan-ga Nar Bay’. Did you come here intending to work or set up a business? No way! When the dinghy hit the beach, I succumbed to a nasty bout of culture shock going AWOL troppo for a few days that culminated in me getting booted off Stormvogel. I didn’t care – I thought I’d found heaven. Unfortunately I hadn’t retained sufficient funds for a return

ticket. Down and out, I begged Vincent Tabuteau and Jan Jacobs to help them fit out June Bahtra at Rattanchai shipyard – so I lived on deck up the creek in Phuket Town. Those were hard days and sweaty mosquito-bitten nights staring up at the stars. Sometimes now I wish I were what I was when I wanted to be what I am now. Tell us about your life in Phuket. I’m the luckiest foreigner to ever set foot on Phuket. My Seppo [Australian dialect for American citizen – ‘septic tank’] mate Barry Bailey got his melon run over by one of those early jetskis with a hanging outboard motor. So I got his job running the three boats at the newly opened Amanpuri back in 1988. Anthony Lark (Trisara) was the GM and the property had started to set the Kingdom’s luxury benchmark that still hasn’t been topped. We started a charity band called ‘Free Beer’ with hotel GM Larz Ydmark and Laurent Myter and played fund-raising gigs with various visiting rock stars. The Amancruises manager’s job in those early years never felt like work. I was living the dream. I stayed through the top of the bell curve where we managed and operated 26 luxury boats, with 60 Thai crew. I invested in Phuket’s first marine services businesses, Thai Marine Leisure and Phuket Yacht Services with good friends Andy Dowden, Vincent Tabuteau and Jan Jacobs. We sold out to the Prataraprasit family, who built The Yacht Haven marina on the site. Another friend, Tony Green, and I founded Phuket Water Taxi, Steppa Boats and H20 Sportz Indonesia, the first fast charter company, fiberglass boat factory and top end half day diving in the region. More luck came my way when I was invited to invest in Irish Pubs Molly Malone’s and Scruffy Murphy’s – then in the two Pizza Company franchises in Patong. I’m divested of everything now, but I’d probably do it all again if I was given the opportunity. There’s still one thing left from the old days, though. Grenville Fordham (MD of this magazine’s publisher), Andy Dowden and I write and publish an amazing sailing/cruising guide, ‘Southeast Asia Pilot’, every few years and that keeps me pretty busy charting the region. Tell us about the latest development in your professional life? I’ve just started a two-year contract with the Malaysian sovereign fund’s ‘Government Linked Companies Destination Resorts and Hotels and Desaru Coast Developments’. We’re building three mega tourism hotel and themed attraction projects in Johor Bahru, Iskandar and Langkawi. I’m helping plan, build and operate their marinas, workboats, ferries, luxury cruise businesses, beachfronts and coastal areas.
What do you see as your biggest success to date, either here or elsewhere? Being a good Dad for our four amazing kids. If they disagree – I’ll beat them bloody senseless! Whereabouts do you live in Phuket? In Pakhlok just east of Heroines' Monument. What determined your choice of location? I loathe the traffic and wanted to be a 20-minute drive from everywhere – so I stuck a pin at Heroines’ and drew a 3km ring around it. I also wanted to be10m above sea level (tsunami-proof ), with lots of privacy and a straight speed-bump-free access road with no neighbours. Took me a while but I found the perfect plot at Eco Nanua and built a fortress there. What do you like most about living in Phuket? The Whitsunday Islands in Australia are pretty awesome, but Phuket is geographically more diverse and has more to offer. I love the ocean and I’m far less paranoid about swimming and diving in the Andaman Sea. In Oz everything in the water wants to kill you. I love Thailand and Phuket is the best place in Thailand. The island is literally floating right in the middle of the most awesome cruising grounds on the planet. Phang Nga Bay, Krabi, Phi Phi, Racha, the Koh Yao’s, Lanta, The Similans, Surins, Burma and Andaman Islands are stunning and all within easy reach. For a boat guy like me it’s simply paradise on earth. Do you expect to return here after your KL stint? For sure. I’m a Phuketian - having lived more years on the island than anywhere else. Home’s not where you’re born – it’s where you’re prepared to die. What's the hardest/most frustrating thing about living here (and in Kuala Lumpur)? The traffic really shits me – and the growing number of resident expat Thailand knockers. My family is in the midst of getting our Thai Nationality, so I feel more at home here than I do in other countries. Some people wouldn’t be happy in heaven. I wish those that don’t like Thailand just stopped complaining and went back to where they came from. Nowhere’s perfect – why do they think this should be? And in KL? The traffic mostly and I miss being called “Khun Bill”. In Malaysia they call me Mr. O’Leary, Sir, Boss and even William Francis - but I don’t know who they’re talking to. How old are you? 52 last 4th of July. 1961 was an awesome batch – haven’t met a bad one yet.
It's hard to beat the Amanpuri for all three – but it’s exclusive and expensive. Do you do much travelling, either around the immediate area or overseas? Yeah, I love travelling on boats to new places anywhere in Asia. I’ve also got a good mate who invites me fast boating with him in the Mediterranean. I love Italy, Croatia, Montenegro, Amalfi, Capri and St Tropez. With two kids in the states, Venice Beach in California is growing on me too. It’s got fruitcakes just like Phuket. Are you involved in any local charities, clubs or associations? I don’t have much of a social life anymore. I’m over it. The older I get, the more I agree with Shopenheur on the phases of a man’s life. It’s family time or solitude that I actively seek now. Charities? We anonymously support the few worthwhile (in our opinion) island charities. When we have a windfall, we like to pay it forward. I reckon that’s what keeps all this good luck rolling in.
What about your wife and family? My wife is Carolyn. I met her on Hamilton Island when she was 19 and we’ve been happily married for 22 years. Children? Timothy 20 – 3rd year Chapman University California; Bronty 19 – starts at USC in LA in January; Meg 14 and Mia 11 live with us and are studying at The Garden School in KL. Which Phuket schools did your kids go to? Greenhouse and British School (BIS). Then Tim went to NIST in Bangkok and Bronty to Harvard Westlake in LA. What do you think the future holds for you? Continued vitality, health, creativity, prosperity – and if I’m lucky, maybe even a tad of wisdom. Progress not perfection. Nihil Admirari is my way of life. How do you evaluate success? Serenity and peace. It comes and goes, of course, for all of us. When I truly don’t care about the good opinion of others, am happy in my own skin and try to practice patience, kindness, tolerance and love – that’s success. The happier I am, the more successful I am – and vice versa. By these criteria, the most successful bloke in Phuket must be the weathered onetoothed garland seller at the Boat Lagoon lights. Is there anyone happier on the island? He’s my hero. Actually, plenty of successful people live on Phuket – they’re mainly Thais. What’s your dream car? Audi Q7. It’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing. What do you do with your free time, if you have any? Kids, art brut and writing screenplays. Which are your favourite restaurants / clubs / beaches in Phuket? Anything north of Heroine’s Monument or on Surin beach.

The next big marine event on the island after the Kings Cup will be The Phuket International Boat Show (PIMEX) Since 2003 the show has grown into a successful marine and lifestyle show in South East Asia’s exotic tropical playground. Held from 9th to 12th January 2014 at Phuket’s five-star Royal Phuket Marina, with the purpose built exhibition space overlooking the in-water display in a magical setting offering fine dining and spectacular views of the yachts. The show will have up to 50 yachts in the water from 10m to 35m, power and sail, and smaller trailer yachts for the entry level visitors. As many as 120 exhibiting companies representing over 250 brands worldwide will make the 2014 show the biggest ever. All products will be on display; from boats to marine equipment and accessories, charter and diving and sailing holidays, technical and design services, marina construction and a wide range of water sports toys and gadgets. Entry is free and all are welcome. The show opening times will be midday to 8.00 pm, Thursday through Saturday, and 11.00am to 6.00pm on Sunday. Social events will be happening during the show or just take advantage of the fine restaurants around the boardwalk.

Raw Tuna & Blue Swimmer Crab Ravioli White Anchovy / Fennel / Orange & Lavender Écume Ingredients (4 portions) 400 gm fresh yellow fin tuna 4 ea blue swimmer Crab remoulade 40 gm shaved baby fennel 4 ea orange & lavender écume
5 gm mustard cress 5 gm Avruga caviar 20 gm white anchovies 3 gm volcanic salt 3 gm black pepper
Blue swimmer remoulade ravioli filling 120 gm fresh blue swimmer crab meat 25 ml mascarpone 5 gm dill 2 gm parsley 5 ml Forvum vinegar
10 gm cornichons 10 gm spring onion 5 gm preserved lemon 2 gm Maldon salt 2 gm black pepper
Combine all ingredients and mix well, let the mixture sit for 5 hours before you serve and use the mixture for the ravioli filling
To make the raw tuna & blue swimmer crab ravioli Slice the Ahi Tuna into 3mm thick sheets. Place 30-50gm of the blue swimmer crab remoulade mixture onto the sheets. Lay another sheet of tuna on top and press with a ring mold to make the ravioli shape. Finally cut the ravioli out with a ring cutter.
About Executive Chef Justin Baziuk I began my career at the age of 14, working part time after school washing dishes in a fine dining restaurant in Wellington , New Zealand , called The Grain of Salt. From there I moved to the Intercontinental Hotel Wellington as a commis chef. During this time I studied London City & Guilds, Cooking & Culinary Arts and set out to achieve my goal of one day becoming an Executive Chef of a multi outlet 5-star hotel . At 19, I moved to Sydney, Australia, where I was fortunate to get a Job as a sous chef at the Park Hyatt Sydney, later moving to the Four Seasons Sydney (formerly the Iconic Regent Sydney). My first position as chef de cuisine , responsible for the fine dining restaurant at The Four Seasons

Preserved lemon
100 ml fresh squeezed orange juice 100 ml fresh pressed carrot juice 2 gm soy lecithin 1 ml lavender extract
1 fresh citron lemon 50 gm salt 50 gm sugar
Combine all ingredients and cover with water in a pot; bring to the boil and simmer for 45minutes. Remove from the water and cool. Cut the lemons into quarters and remove the inside & pith. Fine dice the skin and cover the diced skin with extra virgin olive oil.
To plate the ravioli: • Place the two ravioli onto the plate 8 cm apart from each other. • On the right hand side of each ravioli place the shaved baby fennel salad • Place a spoonful of the écume at the front of each ravioli & one spoon in the middle of the two – as in the picture • Place the rolled white anchovies on the plate – one next to the fennel salad and one in the middle of the raviolis • Place the Avruga caviar on top of one of the anchovies • Dress with preserved lemon & volcanic salt
Sydney was one of the most challenging positions I've had , both physically & mentally. Lemongrass founder, Bobby Duchowny, studied aromatherapy – a healing art that promotes massage, when combined with specific herb and spice oils, as a method to reduce stress, boost energy and heal certain physical ailments – at the American Aromatherapy Association. Sukko means "Beyond Happiness". My first feeling when I stepped through the impressive gates of Sukko Spa was, "I’m in paradise". Chilled out by the soothing background music, my mind was filled with a peaceful wellbeing as I enjoyed the warm traditional welcome (again from Sukko culture) of the ‘Flower Floating Ritual’ – similar to ‘Loy Kratong’, where the idea is to float away past stresses and wish for luck and joy from that moment on. A variety of 40 spa treatments – prepared by Sukko's certified Thai Herbalist and based on ancient Thai medical theory – is offered at Sukko, in packages lasting from 2 to 4 hours. Each package has a specific purpose and can be selected to suit your lifestyle or the way you feel on the day. These herbal recipes and procedures have been handed down through generations and are totally free of petrochemicals, synthetic perfumes or colouring. Some of the herbs and spices are grown in Sukko’s own herb garden and picked just for your treatment, ensuring they are as fresh as can be. I was pampered with the “Be Balanced” package; a 3-hour experience that left me feeling relaxed and refreshed. Welcome to the Phuket Hot List, our regular series that gives you an inside look into the island scene. This month, we’re cruising around the southern beaches of Rawai and Nai Harn, two areas home to a growing international community, yet with a good dose of local charm still shining through.
Hot Eats Rawai and Nai Harn are blessed to have both a thriving local dining scene and diverse international flavours. From somtam to spaghetti, there are some great finds for foodies here. One of the restaurants that best represents the blend of local and international is Nikita’s, a long-time favourite on the Rawai beachfront. Nikita’s is a place we love to go, not only if we’re craving some good western fare such as pizza fresh from their wood-fired oven or a burger, but also for authentic Thai tastes.
We’ve been told that Nikita’s is set to boost its seafood offerings, with fresh selections to be on full view on seafood boats in front of the restaurant. Certainly there are plenty of choices for Thai and seafood along the Rawai beachfront, but only at Nikita’s do you have a good choice of wine and cocktails to enjoy with your meal. We’re partial to the piña coladas, which always seem to help the evenings roll along smoothly!

Set along Nai Harn’s main Sai Yuan road, DaVinci restaurant has been busy expanding its offerings with the opening of its classic style deli about a year ago. It’s now become the go-to spot for those previously hard-to-find items such as sun-dried tomatoes, walnut cream and white truffle oil. Open at 11am, pasta lovers with a hankering for some delicious noodles for lunch can dine in or take away some homemade lasagna, bolognese, or the deli’s specials of the day. DaVinci’s also expanding its reach geographically, with a new restaurant set to open on Kata Noi at Kata Garden condominium this month.

Hot Sweets Well, we just can’t decide. Where are the best desserts in Phuket? Is it the moist, melt-in-the mouth carrot cake at Delish, topped by a tasty cream cheese icing? Or is it the red velvet cupcake at Spoonful of Sugar, a small morsel of chocolaty sweetness that’s almost too pretty to eat? Or is it the raw chocolate mousse at Friendship Beach, a flavourful blend of raw cacao, avocado and banana with a hint of cinnamon? We never could decide – so we just went for all three! Tough to keep in bikini-ready shape with all these treats tempting us every time we visit the area.
Plunge Tropic Villas, found down a tiny soi off Sai Yuan, have recently opened up a show home displaying their pool villas. With a choice of one- or two-bedroom plans, these look to be ideal especially for couples who want privacy and don’t want a lot of fuss. The villas also have one thing that’s sadly lacking at many developments in Phuket: a design by a certified disability expert that takes into consideration those in wheelchairs or with mobility issues. Hot Sights There’s no shortage of colour along the coastal road linking Rawai and Nai Harn, and we always try to take a cruise along this road if we’re starting to suffer from island fever. Though it attracts hundreds of visitors every day, Laem Phromthep remains an inspirational place and the perfect spot to see the vivid colours of the sea, hills and sky stretching out as far as the eye can see. It’s still one of our favourite stops along this road. Sunset at the cape is magnificent, of course, but expect to share your view with some big crowds. The Phuket Art Village on Soi Naya 2 in Nai Harn is another place to find heaps of colour, as well as a bit of whimsy and bohemian style. This is a village like no other on Phuket, home to a collection of Thai artists who live, work and play in this ever-evolving life-sized art project. They occasionally host art-themed events and welcome visitors any time to explore their homes and galleries.
Found within walking distance of the peaceful Laemka Beach, the Ka Villa site has been a hub of construction activity with 13 villas of the project’s first phase expected to be complete in late 2014. Phases two and three, with another 23 villas, are planned to be finished in the following two years. We’ve been told that 62% of the two, three and four-bedroom villas of phase one have already sold, at prices from 8.4 million to 13 million baht. Highlights of each Ka Villa, aside from the coveted location, include larger than expected rooms all facing the focal point of the pool, high vaulted ceilings in the living room, built-in kitchens and wardrobes and a Jacuzzi in the pool. With the former Evason resort nearby set to make a comeback as an InterContinental hotel in 2014, it looks as though the Laemka area is ready to shift upscale in the near future.

Just steps away from Delish at the Fishermen’s Way business centre, another sensory delight has arrived to the scene – and this one is completely fat-free. Lemongrass, the acclaimed spa products maker with a factory in Cherngtalay, has opened up a branch to serve its southern Phuket scent-seekers. We’re told the massage and essential oils have been the hot sellers since the shop’s opening in September. Even just a brief visit to the colourful shop is an uplifting experience, with so many exotic tropical aromas from ylang-ylang to jasmine all bottled up in various concoctions to help keep the body and mind fresh and clear.

Arbitration as an Option for Dispute Resolution We often receive questions about dispute resolution options in Thailand, and whether filing a case in a civil court is always advisable or whether there are other alternatives. Although court litigation is the most common form of dispute resolution proceeding for seeking compensation for breaches of legal duties, parties to a dispute should be aware that arbitration can be a viable, and in many ways preferable, option to filing a court case. The Thai Arbitration Act B.E. 2545 promulgates basic arbitration rules and procedure for bringing an arbitration proceedings before an arbitrator, or panel of arbitrators. In Thailand, a common used venue for arbitration proceedings is often the Thai Arbitration Institute in Bangkok (TAI). The International Chamber of Commerce in Bangkok (ICC) is another preferred venue, and both the TAI and the ICC are experienced in handling complex arbitration cases in Thailand. Both furthermore have enlisted a number of potential arbitrators with varying expertise for diverse arbitration case subject matter. Overview of Arbitration Parties to a dispute generally must agree to resolve a dispute through an arbitration proceeding. In a contractual dispute, at the time a contract is signed the parties should have considered whether or not to include a so-called ‘arbitration clause’ in the contract whereby the venue and rules of the arbitration proceeding are agreed upon. Many commercial contracts, and in particular contracts in real estate, that are performed in Thailand provide for referral of a case to arbitration in the event a dispute occurs as to the construction, interpretation, or a default by one of the parties under the terms of agreement. It is important to know that under Section 11 of the Arbitration Act, the parties must have in most cases, at some point, entered into an agreement to arbitrate a dispute. It can therefore be said that the parties are voluntarily submitting themselves by mutual agreement to the jurisdiction and binding authority of an arbitration venue.
The most common method of voluntarily agreeing to arbitrate is in the substantive commercial agreements themselves at the time the parties enter into an agreement to do business with one another. Both the TAI and ICC recommend specific language be used as an ‘arbitration clause’ in a commercial contract. Parties may agree to arbitrate under a separate stand-alone arbitration agreement. The arbitration agreement should be in writing and signed by all parties who wish to refer the case to arbitration. In either case, a crafted arbitration agreement is highly recommended because it can set out the basic rules of the arbitration proceeding as the parties prefer, including setting the venue, the primary language in which the proceeding will be conducted, the number of arbitrators, the expertise and experience of the arbitrators, how submissions will be made, and how the costs of the proceeding are to be distributed. With an arbitration agreement in place, an arbitration proceeding may be filed in the venue agreed and the general process is as follows: • The complaining party (the Claimant) files a Statement of Claim setting out the basis for the dispute and the request for an award. The Statement of Claim must generally refer to the agreement to arbitrate. • The responding party (the Respondent) then files Statements of Request (motions) or a Statement of Defense and Counterclaim; • The Parties submit an appointment of the arbitrators panel; • After the arbitrators panel is appointed, the parties meet with the Arbitrator to set out procedural issues and to set hearing dates; • On the hearing date, parties present evidence and argue their case in front of the arbitrators panel; • The arbitrators rule on the case and issue an arbitral award in favour of a party or dismiss the case. Arbitration fees and costs are distributed according to the rules. The timeline for the entire arbitration procedure can vary from six months to over a year. Should the arbitrators issue an award, this award is generally binding on the parties under the Thai Arbitration Act and the arbitration agreement. Enforcement of an arbitral can be initiated in the Thai Civil Courts under law without having to relitigate the factual merits of the case. The main concern for parties enforcing an arbitral award is that the party being forced against can object to the award in the civil courts on certain grounds, but such grounds are limited at law. Notwithstanding, the benefits of time and efficiency of the arbitration proceeding and having the ability to determine the basic rules make the arbitration option clearly a viable dispute resolution alternative for parties entering into contracts to conduct business with one an another, and the arbitration option should be strongly considered with legal counsel at the time of entering into commercial contracts in Thailand.

Phuket Property High Season Rush In anticipation of the coming high season – just a month or so away – we've had a rush of home-owners trying to list their Phuket property for sale or rent. And with Phuket being the traditional 'holiday destination' during that period, when most of Europe’s temperature is dropping rapidly to single digits, this is the perfect time to be in Phuket. For holiday rental properties, especially over Christmas and New Year, it’s getting a little late in the day to list your property; the better prepared holiday renters are already busy making bookings or have already secured bookings and made the necessary plans months before. Having said this, there are always the 'not so prepared' and last-minute holiday renters. Therefore home-owners looking to rent out their property over the Christmas and New Year period could get lucky and secure such a last minute booking. As for properties for sale, its best to complete the listing of your property before December as most real-estate agents in Phuket are busy running around the island with prospective clients to view properties and may not be able to list your property in time. This could mean a missed opportunity to sell your property as the months of December through to April are the busy months for Phuket realtors. The listing of a property for sale is not a convoluted process if home-owners are well prepared. An initial process would be a viewing of the property by the real estate agents. This would then be followed by photo-taking, whether by the real-estate agent or a professional photographer. In anticipation of this home-owners should ensure that the property is spruced up,
maintenance works like a new coat of paint, jet-spraying the driveway completed and trees and grass trimmed etc. As for the internal part of the property, the kitchen should be tided up, beds made and all set up as if guests were expected. As a high percentage of prospective holiday home buyers tend to surf the internet for an overview of properties available for sale where they are thinking of purchasing, the first impressions they get are from the photos on the website. Therefore it's very important that home-owners present their property well. A professional photographer specialising in featuring properties costs between 5,000-15,000 baht and the photo session could take a day or two, depending on the weather, and approximately 3-5 days to prepare and present the high resolution photos, usually on a CD or DVD. This could then be handed to the realtors listing your Phuket property so that they can upload a photo selection to their website, publish or print it accordingly. Next would be the documentation stage and home-owners should have photocopies or scans of title deeds (both front and back), house registration book (also known as the blue book), land lease agreements, building permits, company documents (if the property is held in a company), passport and information of management fees, together with other services on hand. This will expedite the documentation stage all the way to executing an agreement with the real estate agent. Now it’s for the real estate agent to list your property on its website and market it through its many marketing channels – and find a buyer for your Phuket property.

The aim is to produce exciting still imagery as well as material for a TV commercial, combining both real and CGI (computer generated imagery). The Helicam crew achieved the required material by utilising the latest addition to the Helicam fleet, which uses onboard avionics & GPS navigation allowing for pin-point accuracy. The Hexicopter is launched from the bow of the yacht by the pilot Philip; the camera is operated by Mhu. The material is system-worked back at the Helicam studio, prior to being handed over to the client.

I re-joined BEST WESTERN Allamanda Laguna Phuket in March this year as the General Manager. I used to work here as the Hotel Manager running the operations under a GM. The owners asked me to return as GM this time. We've always stayed in touch and it's nice to work with them again. Where were you living and working before? I was Villa Manager at Impiana Private Villas in Kata Noi and BYD Lofts in Patong. I've always lived in Kamala, which now is closer to work… Where are you from? I'm from Holland, but I've been in Thailand for 13 years now. What’s special / different about BEST WESTERN Allamanda Laguna Phuket? We're both a resort and serviced apartments – unique for our space, facilities and staff. We have many staff members who've worked with us for a long time, recognising the guests, knowing what they like during their stay, offering a homeaway-from-home service. Our guests love the property for this as well as the location within the Laguna resort area, offering interresort facilities and inter-resort charges. A unique system. Tell us something about your role in the business? I'm in charge of all departments, ensuring our guests enjoy the best possible stay with us and that the team runs most efficiently. What are the main challenges? Keeping the standards high, being located amongst so many of the top hotels in Phuket. …and the biggest difficulties? To stay on top with more and more competition on the island. What is your main target market? Australian, Russian, Chinese and European tourists.
What do you like most about what you do now? I love the guest contact and working with my team to improve our property and services even further. And what do you like least…? There is no least. We have a wonderful property and a wonderful team! What do you hope / expect to achieve within the next 3-5 years? We hope to still be one of the favourite places in Phuket, with many guests returning for the service given by my team. What do you see as your biggest successes to date? Opening eyes, teaching my team to think out of the box and implementing new operating procedures and methods. To what extent did the 2009 global financial mess affect your business? We miss a percentage of our European guests… Are you involved in any CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) programmes? Yes, certainly. We're part of the Bangtao Green Club, focusing on beach cleaning and recycling programmes. We support Soi Dog, offering highly reduced rates for their volunteers staying with us, as well as donations and providing spoiled sheets and blankets. It's a great foundation helping so many. We also support children foundations on the island, such as Baan Holland. We invite the children for a day of activities at the pool or we visit them with equipment, donations, toys and meals. We're about to launch a WE CARE room, that guests can book on our website. A percentage of the room rate will go to these three foundations. Please give us an overview of your typical day ‘at work’? I check urgent emails first, check the reports and tasks assigned for the day, then meet with my management team for a morning briefing to discuss the daily operation, then walk to the lobby and restaurant to meet guests and suppliers. How would you describe your leadership style? I'm a social leader. I'm close to my team members and work on the floor with them where needed. We even share the office. What is your over-riding ambition at this stage in your life? I enjoy my work and personal life and would like to continue doing so in good health.

Phuket may be the ultimate beach holiday destination in the world, but there’s a lot more to experience than just translucent blue seas, powdery white beaches and guaranteed sunshine. Check out the following ideas for alternative activities to add to your holiday experience.
at Chalong There are, of course, many temples in Phuket, but the most popular is Wat Chalong situated to the southeast of Phuket City. Wat Chalong was built during the reign of King Rama II (1809-1842), and has since been subject to much extension. The temple contains several structures and halls. One of these features a gilt-covered statue of the famous and revered Luang Poh Cham, plus statues of Luang Poh Chuang and Luang Poh Gleum, all ex-abbots of the temple. The Grand Pagoda is decorated with wall paintings of scenes from the Buddha's life and features various Buddha images. The air-conditioned 'exhibition home' of Luang Poh Cham contains lifelike human-sized wax models of Luang Poh Cham, Luang Poh Chuang, Luang Poh Gleum, and Luang Pu Thuad, as well as examples of antique Thai furniture and Benjarong (Thai porcelain designed in five colours).
indmill View Point As the name would suggest, this hilltop boasts a modern windmill – the only one on the island. It can be found on the south of Phuket between Nai Harn and Promthep. This isolated spot offers superb views of the tiny Ya Nui Beach and the main Nai Harn Beach. There are always boats moored off both beaches and in December the anchorages really come alive as the Phuket King's Cup Regatta gets under way. How to get there: Drive from Nai Harn Beach towards the highest hilltop and take the first road on the right. You will spot the windmill on your right hand side. able Ski Here's a great sporting activity for the speed-lover: Phuket Wake Park, situated beside a tropical garden in Kathu. You can try knee boards, double skis, slalom (single) skis, wake boards, ski disks and trick skis. All equipment is available for rent or you can bring your own. Costs range from 900 baht for 2 hours to 1,500 baht for a full day. Open daily 7.30am - 11pm. Also, try Anthem Wakepark in Thalang. The park is built on an existing natural fresh water lake of over 50,000 sqm. Restaurant, proshop, accommodation, excursion, free Wi-Fi and transfer services are also provided. Costs range from 800 baht for 2 hours to 1,000 baht for a full day. Open daily 9am - 6.30pm.
hromthep Cape (Laem Phromthep) This is the most popular and largest of all the view points. The area has been developed to offer extensive views over the sea and there are walking paths from the cliffs to the water's edge for the adventurous. The sunsets are absolutely breathtaking and never the same two days running. If you're romantically inclined this is the place to come in the evenings and hold hands as the setting sun paints the evening skies in towering kaleidoscopes of light and shade. How to get there: Phromthep Cape is a headland on the extreme southern end of Phuket about 19 km from Phuket City. You can drive there via Chalong Junction along Highway 4024 to Rawai Beach, and then follow the signs for 2 km.
