We all know one of those places… they never advertise but they’re busy. Why? ‘Word of mouth’. People tell their friends, “You must try..” and the word spreads. In this monthly column, we spread the word further about the great-value nooks and crannies that we know about on Phuket.
One Chun Café n' Restaurant
81 D4
10am-10pm. On Dibuk Rd, next to the bridge. A Sino-Thai setting with quality food and reasonable prices. Some of the dishes are more or less the same as the famous 'Raya restaurant' (from the same family) but the portions are a bit smaller, the prices cheaper – but the taste is the same . Steamed Pork with Garlic and Pepper Phuket Style , Creamy Crabmeat Curry with Noodles and Prawns in Tamarind and Lemongrass Sauce are "Must Try!!"
Wilai Restaurant
81 C5
7am-2pm. On Thalang Rd, near Thalang/ Yaowarat intersection. Wilai offers many affordable Phuket local dishes without hurting your pocket. The place is pretty simple with plastic chairs and metal tables; no air conditioning. Mee Thai Pad (Phuket Style Fried Noodle), Khao Yum Budu (Rice with Mixed Herbs and Budu Dressing) are both heartily recommended .
Chalong Pier Beer Garden
110 G4
3pm-2am. Take the road to the pier from Chalong Circle. At the end of the road, opposite the car park A great place to see all the sporting events – very large screen plus two 42” flat screens mean that you get all the action , sometimes two or three big sporting events at the same time – football , rugby, Aussie Rules, motorsport... If it ’s on they’re showing it! Cold bottled and draught beer. A really tasty selection of pub grub – fish and chips, sausage and mash , pies with everything plus Jam’s famous beef or chicken stew.
Go Benz Kao Lao Lued Moo 6pm-2am. At the intersection of 81 B5 Phatiphat Rd. & Ranong Rd. A small restaurant which is always packed and hard to get a table , but worth the effort. Serves Kao Lao Lued Moo (Kao Lao is a soup usually served with a bowl of rice; you can choose from pork bone , crispy pork , lung, heart or liver to add in). One of the must-try dishes is 'Khao Tom Hang' (Dry porridge with a choice of pork bone or crispy pork served with a small blow of soup).
Chalawan Kitchenn
110 G1
10am-10pm. Chaofa Rd East, just 30m from Wine Connection. Authentic Thai & European food with a large selection of meals. Signature dishes dishes are Mussaman & Green Curry, Papaya Salad & Fish 'n Chips. Meals from 35baht. Excellent food at great prices. See comments on Trip Advisor. If you enjoy good fresh food put this place on your list.

Today, people of all nationalities come from all over the world to enjoy the peaceful and pristine waters of Phuket and the Andaman Sea,” says General Manager Christian Schwind. The archipelagos of the Andaman Sea and its maritime national parks are renowned as some of the most beautiful yachting grounds in the world. Many people say that there is no better experience than to go onboard a yacht and see the breathtaking scenery of limestone rocks, white sand beaches and crystal clear waters around Phuket and the South of Thailand, including Phang Nga Bay and the coastline of Krabi. Guests are able to discover unique destinations and unspoiled spots. And a luxury charter with Andaman Cruises is the most exclusive and most personalised way to do that. ANDAMAN CRUISES
Christian Schwind Christian Schwind manages one of Phuket's leading luxury yacht charter businesses, Andaman Cruises How long have you been with Andaman Cruises? What’s your position and what attracted you to the job? I joined the company as a General Manager in June 2013. Andaman Cruises is the leading luxury yacht charter company here on the Phuket and well-known for its modern fleet and high standard of service. For example, international celebrities such as football star Cristiano Ronaldo, Hollywood actor Dolph Lundgren and top model Heidi Klum have all been on a cruises with us. It is a great pleasure working for a company that enjoys such a good reputation. I feel honoured to be part of the team. What were you doing / where were you living & working before? For the last two years I was managing Andaman Travel, a small luxury travel agency, which is focused on organizsing individual vacations to Thailand for VIPs and celebrities. Before moving to Asia, I worked as Senior Manager Marketing & PR at the Russian energy giant Gazprom, the world’s biggest natural gas producer. Where are you from? I am from Berlin, the capital of Germany and one of the most fascinating cities in Europe. I spent most of my life there before I decided to take a new challenge in Thailand. What’s special / different about Andaman Cruises? What are its unique points? The quality. Andaman Cruises stands for premium hospitality and an excellent service. That is the reason we are valued by high end luxury resorts, which are really interested in cooperating with us. We share the same philosophy and guarantee the same service standards. Tell us something about your role in the business? I am completely new to the yacht business, but that is not a big deal. I mean, if you want to market or sell a Ferrari, you just need enthusiasm and passion for the product. And that is not very difficult. It is the same situation in the luxury yacht business. Furthermore I want to take up the cudgels for my team, which really is an asset for the company. Without them Andaman Cruises would not be the same. What are the main challenges as they relate to your role? As there is more and more competition in the yacht business, our aim is to keep our leading market position and to increase the number of charters. At the same time we always want to improve the quality of our product.
…and what are the biggest difficulties you have to overcome? The weather – to be honest. What is your main target market? We have been welcoming guests from all over the world: Europe, Middle East, China, Russia, USA and Australia. What do you like most about what you do now? In my eyes it is a gift from heaven to work in the yacht business. The most interesting is to deal with different clients from different countries. It is really fascinating to get in touch with such a diversity of people and to learn about new cultures. What do you (and the business) hope / expect to achieve within the next 3-5 years? We would like to complete our fleet with a few more yachts due to the higher demand over the last years. In addition we want to extend our business and to focus on corporate events and incentives as well. Among our clients are BMW and Panasonic; we hosted their management incentives onboard our yachts. What do you see as your biggest successes to date? From my personal point of view my biggest success was the opportunity to move to another country and to explore a different part of the world. I was well-situated in Germany as I worked at one of the world’s most successful companies for five years. Many friends asked me why I quit my job? And I said, why not? I came to Thailand for the first time in 2008; it really touched me and it was like an emotional firework. Is Andaman Cruises involved in any CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) programmes? Yes, we have been supporting different charity events such as the Phuket Has Been Good to Us Foundation with vouchers, shirts etc. I am truly convinced that a successful company should be socially committed and involved, especially in social and educational projects for kids. Kids are our future and they deserve to have a good start in life. How would you describe your leadership style? I would say that my leadership style is democratic-oriented. I believe in team spirit. Everyone should be able to participate and to bring in ideas to create a better company. But in the end I will make the final decision. What is your over-riding ambition at this stage in your life? My ambition is to be happy.

TEMPLE FAIR TRADITIONS
The Chalong temple fair is coming. You may not see it, but if you’re in the Chalong area in the first week of this month, you’ll certainly hear it. Wat Chalong is Phuket’s largest and busiest Buddhist temple, and every year during the Chinese New Year it hosts an exuberant seven-day festival, full of firecrackers and fun. This year’s fair will run from January 31 to February 6. For those new to Thailand, or who have limited their travels to Phuket’s beaches, a temple fair offers a fantastic, and sometimes bewildering, peek into local colour and culture. Upon arriving, anyone with a notion that a Buddhist temple is a place of quiet reflection will soon learn that silence is in short supply during the week of the fair. The main entrance, 200 metres from Chaofa Road West
Deep fried insects (right), a 'must try' snack for visitors
Aside from silence, however, most everything else is found in great abundance. Starting from its entrance along Chaofa Road West, the temple’s grounds are packed with vendors selling delicious street snacks and a wide assortment of things typically seen at Thai markets and fairs: T-shirts, CDs, toys, handicrafts, fabrics, sunglasses, bunny rabbits (alive), chickens (cooked), just to name a few. We’ve also spotted things that we never knew could possibly be things for sale. Like a bucket of goat skulls, for instance. A big section near the road is reserved for plant and flower vendors, who sell orchids galore and do a roaring trade during the fair. You can also find an assortment of services, like foot massage and portrait photography.

TEMPLE FAIR TRADITIONS
Target shooting games

If the shopping gets to be too much, kids could try out some of the fair’s amusement rides, from bumper cars to a giant bouncy castle to the ferris wheel. Or you could vie for a big stuffed animal or other prize you’ll have to lug around for the rest of the evening at one of the games stands with target shooting, ball-throwing and more. Entertainment is another fair attraction with local flavour, featuring such performers as Thai country music (luk-thung) singers, traditional southern Thai Nang Talung shadow puppeteers and Thai dancers. The main hall of the temple offers a distinctly more serene sight, where the graceful merit-making practice familiar to all Thai Buddhists unfolds. Dozens of people can be seen lighting incense, presenting lotus flowers and making deep, respectful bows to the Buddha image – a moving sight and a reminder of the temple’s main function as a place of worship.
The temple’s grounds are packed with vendors
Some might wonder why the temple fair is always held during Chinese New Year, since Wat Chalong is a Thai, not a Chinese, temple. The answer lies in the 200-year-old wat’s history. Back in the 1800s, during a heady time for tin mining in Phuket, thousands of Chinese labourers migrated to Phuket to work in the mines. In 1876, a Chinese worker rebellion broke out and Wat Chalong’s abbot at the time, Luang Por Cham, played an important role in sheltering terrified residents, calming the angry workers and restoring peace to the island. The abbot is still highly revered for this and other accomplishments under his guidance, and there’s a lifelike statue of him sitting in a hall behind the main temple building. Wat Chalong still maintains close ties with Phuket’s Chinese community, and for decades it has set the dates of the fair around the Lunar New Year to give people with Chinese heritage the chance to join the festivities.
Tips for enjoying Wat Chalong Fair It’s best to go at sunset time, about 6pm to 7pm. With the daytime heat not much is happening before then, and if you go later it can be difficult to find a parking spot. Car parking is impossible at the temple but some is available nearby since residents in the area will allow people to park on their land for a small fee. Also, remember that, even though it’s a festive atmosphere, the temple is a religious place so dress respectfully and avoid wearing beachwear or skimpy clothing.

FISH 4 THOUGHT
Method Start by heating the olive oil in the pan, followed by the finely chopped onion. Cook for a minute and add the cherry tomatoes and chili at this point. Add the clams, followed by the white wine and cook off the alcohol. Gradually pour in the chicken stock to prevent the pan from drying off.
Ingredients 12 fresh clams
3 tbsp olive oil
2 tbsp finely chopped onions
150 gm cooked spaghetti
7-8 cherry tomatoes , halved
Handful of basil
150 ml dry white wine
Chili (optional)
200 ml chicken stock
For perfect cooking of the clams, remove each clam individually as soon as they open. Once all clams are removed, add the spaghetti and basil, and cook for a minute. Add the clams back into the pan, toss around and serve.

VSET is a "restaurant at its extraordinary best". VSET, pronounced "Vi-Sate", in Thai means "extraordinary".
An evening must kick off with an aperitif! And so we did, at DaVinci's super-stylish 'V Lounge' cocktail bar. The restaurant itself is open air, but with enough cover for when the rains come (and with an airconditioned dining room too). The whole place is tasteful, beautifully designed and welcoming, while the children’s play area allows parents to keep their kids in sight while relaxing with a fine meal. Everything at DaVinci comes from the kitchen with the freshest ingredients. Lemongrass founder, Bobby Duchowny, studied aromatherapy – a healing art that promotes massage, when combined with specific herb and spice oils, as a method to reduce stress, boost energy and heal certain physical ailments – at the American Aromatherapy Association. Some years ago while on holiday in Thailand, he visited an organic farm in Petchaboon province and became interested in the natural healing properties of Thai herbs and spices. “I was particularly attracted to lemon grass as it was used in many popular Thai foods, as a medicine for stomach disorders and even as a repellent for mosquitoes,” he recalls. Bobby used lemon grass as his signature herb to create a line of essential oils, face and body creams, shower gels and bath crystals, which he and his wife Palita sold at Bangkok’s world-famous Weekend Market. What started, several years ago, as a modest enterprise has blossomed into a successful operation offering over 90 oils and a wide range of body care products through many outlets, as well as supplying many of Thailand’s top resorts and spas with aromatherapy oils.

And he’s developed a revitalizing mineral muscle soak made from Andaman Sea salt crystals, blended with white orchid and chamomile extracts, to help draw out impurities and soothe and revive tense muscles. “People are sensitive to different scents at different times of day. It’s a good idea to get a variety of essential oils and experiment with what smells and feels good to you,” he says. “Our aromatherapy massage and body oils can be either uplifting or calming to the spirit. They’re carefully balanced hand-blended oils created by adding pure essential oils to nourishing, vitamin E enriched, sweet almond and jojoba base oils. Lemongrass has won many awards, including Condé Nast Hot List 2007, and has been featured in several top magazines, including Time Magazine’s “Best of Asia”. According to Time, “If you want to smell like no one else, try mixing a selection from the more than 90 natural scents at Lemongrass House.” Lemongrass House is located in Cherngtalay and Surin Beach, where you can buy their full range of spa products at modest prices, making perfect gifts for friends and family who can enjoy the aromatic scents of Asia in the privacy of their homes – no matter where in the world they live.
“Our advantage is that we produce the freshest spa products and our stock is never kept longer than three months; using fresh spa products can be likened to eating fresh food rather than processed food.” Based on his years of experiences at some of the top spas in Southeast Asia, Bobby has developed a full line of healthy skin care products. Sukko Cultural Spa
“The Best Spa In Southeast Asia”
SPA & BEAUTY
Sukko means "Beyond Happiness". My first feeling when I stepped through the impressive gates of Sukko Spa was, "I’m in paradise". The Sukko staff are dressed beautifully in traditional Thai style and the spa design, influenced by the ancient Siamese capital, creates a haven of calm yet regal serenity. I felt I had left all my troubles behind.
Chilled out by the soothing background music, I was filled with a peaceful wellbeing as I enjoyed the warm traditional Sukko welcome of the ‘Flower Floating Ritual’ – like ‘Loy Kratong’, where the idea is to float away past stresses and wish for luck and joy from that moment on A variety of 40 spa treatments – prepared by Sukko's certified Thai Herbalist and based on ancient Thai medical theory – is offered at Sukko, in packages lasting from 2 to 4 hours. Each package has a specific purpose and can be selected to suit your lifestyle or the way you feel on the day. These herbal recipes and procedures have been handed down through generations and are totally free of petrochemicals, synthetic perfumes or colouring. Some of the herbs and spices are grown in Sukko’s own herb garden and picked just for your treatment, ensuring they are as fresh as can be. I was pampered with the “Be Balanced” package; a 3-hour experience that left me feeling relaxed and refreshed. This 3-treatment combination began with 30 minutes in the steam room and the Jacuzzi, followed by a Thai Turmeric Body Scrub designed to soften your skin and awaken your senses. The scrub was followed by Sukko Synergy Body Massage (see description opposite). “Is this pressure okay? Too strong? How are you feeling?” my therapist asked me from time to time. “Mmm…perfect…” were the only responses that seemed to suit how I felt. Sukko Spa’s restaurant, Suk Savoey Spa Cuisine, presents a unique concept: "Menu by Blood Types" and "Menu by Elements". For those who want to exercise, the Suk Sanan Club provides a myriad of fitness opportunities, including ‘Rue Sri Dat Ton’ (the hermit self stretching), a traditional Thai exercise or, for something more strenuous, try ‘Thai Martial Arts’, a traditional and effective art of self-defense.

ROMANCE
With long white sandy beaches and classic tropical sunset scenes, Phuket is full of romantic sights. Enjoying a dreamy Valentine’s Day is as easy as finding a quiet patch of soft sand and cracking open a good bottle of wine to watch the sunset together. But for those wishing to go the extra mile to capture someone’s heart in Phuket, here are a few more ideas:
Sky’s the limit For a truly uplifting experience, and an exciting one too, take to the sky and enjoy sweeping views across the Andaman seascape together from the lofty heights of a Helithai helicopter. If the sight of the steep karsts and gem-toned waters of Phang Nga Bay doesn’t spark some romance, nothing will. www.helithaiandassociates.com
villas exude plenty of romance already but for an added splurge you could try one of SALA’s signature romantic experiences: a ‘Champagne Breakfast for Two’; a ‘Bubble Tub Champagne’ with an aromatic milky bath, a bottle of champagne and hot fudge dessert; or the ‘Candles and Flowers Surprise’ that includes rose petals in the pool, a scattering of tea lights around the pool and bathtub, and a rose petal heart arrangement on the bed. Banyan Tree Phuket has long been synonymous with romance on the island, and both its couples spa retreat and honeymoon package entail an immersion into its private world with endless pampering for two. Sharing a bottle of champagne in the jacuzzi, followed by a cuddle and chocolates on the rose-petal-strewn, downy bed is a fine way to celebrate new love or re-ignite passions that may have slipped away with time. www.capesienna.com, www.salaphuket.com, www.banyantree.com/en/phuket
Villa Chi
Decadent escapes Total tranquillity is assured at Villa Chi, one of the villas clinging to the rocks along the Kamala Bay headland at Cape Sienna resort. This three-bedroom modern retreat has its own 16-metre marble pool with a one-storey-high waterfall, a breathtaking view of the sea and sunsets from every room, private butler service and a large projector screen in the master bedroom for snuggly movie watching. Wedding @ Samsara
Palate passions Italy’s among the world’s most romantic places, and Phuket is blessed with restaurants that offer an authentic Italian experience. Soft lighting, a good range of wine and tasty Italian pastas are the hallmarks of Salvatore's in Phuket Town, always a favourite for couples, as well as Da Maurizio in Kalim. Boasting a divine setting overlooking Patong Bay, Da Maurizio puts on some added flourishes for Valentine’s Day including flowing champagne, a special menu for couples and a red rose for the lady. We’ve heard that more than a few marriage proposals have been staged at this long-running romantic restaurant. www.baanrimpa.com, www.salvatorestaurant.com
Da Maurizio
Wedding with a WOW! Renting out a private villa can give a couple’s special day some added intimacy and glamour. Among the villas known for hosting spectacular weddings, Shanti Villa at Jivana estate on Natai Beach in Phang Nga offers a picture-perfect backdrop for a romantic wedding scene: silken white sands, lush gardens, wide terraces and a sprawling villa in a sleek design. A flurry of Instagram photo shares by the wedding guests is all but guaranteed. At a recent wedding in one of the villas in Samsara, a private estate in a magnificent setting on a headland just north of Patong Beach, the bride and groom’s vows were exchanged just as the sun’s rays were transforming the sea and sky's golden glow to fiery red behind them. A dramatic and memorable moment for the couple and their friends and family who watched in awe. www.phuketvillasandhomes.com, www.shibumithailand.com
Romance on the seas Sailing away and exploring some exotic tropical islands for days on end is the epitome of a romantic escape, and there are many ways to do this from Phuket. A typical Faraway Yachting Charters trip starts with a bottle of champagne and fresh fruit to welcome
the couple on board its luxury catamaran. With the well-appointed cabin one side of the catamaran reserved for the couple’s exclusive use, there’s no feeling of intrusion on any part of the journey. The trip may include stops at the islands of Maithon and Phi Phi Ley, the beautiful Railey Beach, plus more remote places. Couples have plenty of time to themselves to enjoy a paddle together on a kayak or a stroll on a quiet beach with a couple of glasses and a cooler with ice and champagne. For those arriving from beyond Phuket, there’s a full VIP treatment from the moment they step off the plane, including fast-track immigration and limousine taxi transport. There’s a fantastic fleet of luxury motor yachts on Phuket, too, such as Andaman Cruises (see page 17) or Da Vinci Sunseeker (see page 19) for indulging in a romantic engine-powered sea journey. www.chartercatamaran.com, info@chartercatamaran.com
Romantic seclusion
Simple pleasures For a more rustic romantic adventure, hire a long-tail boat and head out for a snorkel session for two on Coral Island, or take a long-tail sunset cruise around Cape Promthep. If it’s inspiring views you’re after, drive up to Rang Hill in Phuket Town, or try cosying up in the hilltop sala at the wind turbine lookout point near Cape Phromthep to gaze out at the Nai Harn Bay panorama.

Condominium Meetings of Owners – Does Your Vote Count? It generally happens once per year – owners of at least a single unit in a registered condominium development in Thailand receive a written notice in the post. The notice is usually sent by the condominium juristic person manager and is entitled “Notice of Annual General Meeting of Joint Owners,” or something similar, and states the date and place of the meeting. Along with the notice is a basic agenda or meeting items. And in more professionally managed condominiums there may even be pamphlets of information on such items, and ‘slips’ for voting on key issues to be discussed with draft resolutions for the owners to vote. As most owners of condominium units in Thailand are aware, along with their purchase of the unit, they obtain the right under the Condominium Act of Thailand to vote on certain operational and management issues on the agenda in respect of their condominium at so-called “Meetings of the Joint Owners.” However, often overlooked at the commencement of a meeting, is whether all persons and/or ’owners’ in attendance actually have the legal right to vote at such meeting. Suffice to say many condominium meetings proceed to vote on resolutions of the joint owners improperly, and without inspection of the voting status each person in attendance, leading to resolutions passed or denied without a proper count. Such omissions can lead to disputes over the legality of a resolution, and in the worst cases the filing of court cases. It is therefore incumbent on the chairman of the meeting and the Condominium Juristic Person Manager to ensure all persons voting are entitled to vote and recognise where rules in place stipulate that a person attempting to vote on a resolution may be disqualified. Accordingly, the chairperson and the manager should keep in mind the following general rules at upcoming Annual General Meetings of Joint Owners this ‘meeting season’ in respect of voting rights: Reduction in Number of Votes The default statutory rule under the Condominium Act of Thailand is each owner shall have the number of votes according to the ratio of each owner’s ownership in the common property of the
Condominium. Thus, the default rule in not a ‘1 Unit – 1 Vote’ policy, but is rather related to the size of the owner’s investment. Larger area condominium units will have more votes as they have a larger share of ownership. However, this is not always true. In cases where one owner holds more than half of the total votes, such owner's votes are reduced by statute to the total number of votes of all the remaining owners. This rules typically applies to developer owned units, as developers often hold the Thai quota in their Thai development company and therefore retain more than half of the number of total votes. Arrears on Payment of Common Area Management Fees (“CAM Fees”) Late on your CAM Fees? You may not be entitled to vote under law and the regulations of the condominium, and how late you are on payment will determine your voting eligibility. Under section 18/1 of the Condominium Act, owners in arrears on payments not only may be subject to late payment interest penalties, but may also be precluded from voting at a meeting if they remain in arrears on any part of the past due amount for at least six months. Such default rule, however, may be changed in the registered rules and regulations of the specific condominium. Lessees Are you actually a lessee and not a freehold owner of a condominium unit? If you entered into a lease agreement for the acquisition of a long term lease to a condominium unit, you are not automatically entitled to vote at a meeting of owners as the Condominium Act refers to ‘owners’ only, meaning ‘freehold owners.’ As such, your landlord must have given you a proper proxy to vote on his or her behalf at the condominium meetings. Usually such a proxy should be made part of the lease agreement. Specific Expenses If there is a specific vote or regulation on an agenda to incur expenses for only certain owners, then under the Condominium Act only such owners affected by the vote are allowed to vote. The relevant provision under the Condominium Act is section 46. Authorised Agents Where a joint owner is a juristic person or entity (i.e. a company), only authorised persons or agents acting on behalf of the juristic person or entity are entitled to vote. Authorised persons or agents should hold a proper proxy of power or attorney signed and stamped by the entity’s authorised director if a person other than the authorised director of the entity. Without such a proper appointment, the vote of the juristic person or entity could be challenged as invalid. Proxies Proxies are allowed at meeting of joint owners but the following persons may not hold proxies for another owner under section 47 of the Condominium Act: 1. Board Members or their Spouses; 2. The Manager and his spouse; 3. Employees and/or contractors of the Condominium Juristic; and 4. Employees of the Manager where the Manager is a corporate entity.

The need for integration. The key systems of security are intrusion detection, access control, and video surveillance. If each of these systems is installed separately, administration and training can burden a company or property owner. Intrusion alarms occur on one system, access badges are administered in a stand-alone database, and intelligent digital video technology runs on dedicated computer equipment. Each system requires service, maintenance, administration, and training. ISS single system enables greater flexibility to add security components that can be easily integrated into the overall system, keeping the cost of capital expenditure low, and requiring little additional training.

Phuket’s “catch up” infrastructure The Phuket branch of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) reported in September 2013 that the first 11 months of the fiscal year that began in October 2012 recorded more than 10 million tourist arrivals in Phuket. The full fiscal year that ended in September 2013 is expected to show 12 million tourists visited the island in that year. TAT believes that in the next fiscal year the number of tourists will increase to 14 million that could see tourism income rising to at least THB 240 billion in fiscal 2014. These are impressive figures with an upward growing trend every year. So can Phuket’s current infrastructure cope with the ever increasing holiday makers to Phuket?
PHUKET
Currently there are several infrastructure projects being undertaken around the island, causing much moaning and groaning among Phuket residents about the horrendous traffic jams, especially during the morning and evening rush hour. A couple of years ago, 20 minutes at an intersection in Phuket was referred to as a 'traffic jam', but now more than 20 minutes at the Darasamuth intersection (corner of Central Festival) is to be expected. Construction works are currently in progress to build an underpass at this intersection that it is hoped will ease traffic in that area on its completion later this year – but until then it's more traffic congestion. To add to the traffic woes, the construction of another underpass at the Samkong intersection (corner of Tesco Lotus) began in mid-November (at the start of the high season, no less!) and is expected to complete in 2015. Phuket International Airport took a while to gain its much needed expansion approval, which commenced work in September 2012 and will see capacity increase from 6.5 million to 12.5 million international and domestic passengers a year. The expansion works are currently still in progress, but by the next
fiscall year (2014) 14 million ( ) the h TAT is already l d predicting d ll tourists – already surpassing the post-expansion capacity. Looks like the long queues at immigration counters will continue… Several other projects are currently being commissioned and under consideration, one being the Patong tunnel that will cut through Kathu and is expected to start construction in 2017.The existing steep uphill and downhill road has seen many accidents with tourist laden buses due to brake failures. This very steep road is also dangerous to regular motorists, especially in the rainy season, when the road has little traction and motorcycles have been known to virtually slide down the hill. All the above infrastructure works are “essential” to the future and growth of Phuket, even though it's an continual game of catch-up to keep up with Phuket's rapid growing. The number of new residential projects by both Thai & foreign developers are continuously on the rise, which is only to be expected. To support future growth, the future projections and plans for Phuket are crucial to maintaining brand “Phuket” and hopefully both the local administration and central government recognise this and continue to give Phuket much needed support. EDITOR'S NOTE: This article was written before the political protests reached current levels. Time will tell whether this political unrest has an negative effect on TAT's ambitious 2014 predictions.

He wasn’t rich and had to work very hard. He bought fish from the fishermen to sell in the market. Then he started to make some money and tried to do many things, some successfully, some not. He had a chance to buy a soon-to-beabandoned tin mine, so he started his own tin mine. After the tin mine era was over, we started other businesses such as gas stations, car dealerships, automobile bodywork and painting, car accessories, golf course, housing and real estate projects. What’s your role in Anuphas group? I studied civil engineering and earning a master’s degree in water resource and environmental engineering. I apply this knowledge to my job. My family wants me to help take care of the real estate part of our business. What projects are you working on now? My priority is the Chao Fah City project, which started with the Honda showroom; that’s why started to work in Honda. I’m responsible for expanding Honda, and we’re opening a new branch in Thalang in the middle of next year. For Mazda we have two branches, including the one we just opened at Chao Fah City. I think a new Ford showroom will be coming soon. We have the master plan for this area to be like an 'Auto Land', a one stop area for cars, just like they have in the USA. What about your family now? I have one brother, Monthep, who’s now living in Florida in the US with his Taiwanese wife and two children. He’s a manager working in the IT department of a group of hospitals. My father, Khun Montri, is a very happy, easygoing man. Every day after he finishes work he goes out to fly his radio controlled airplanes. He’s almost 73 and has been doing that since he was 13 years old. Imagine 60 years playing the same thing! He used to fly them at the airport (he had permission!) when only three planes a day arrived in Phuket; he knew exactly what time the planes were coming so he could land his radio-controlled plane on a real runway! He’s found a very good way to relax, which I think is what makes him happy. I wish I could be more like him in that way. What do you like to do to relax? I like to exercise, sometimes swimming or jogging and I like golfi ng and scuba diving. I just came back from diving in Sipadan, Malaysia. It’s a beautiful island and when you dive you can see how well they protect it. Patong once had beautiful coral reef and marine life, and the beach was one of the best in the world. But see what’s happened now. It’s changed a lot. It’s so sad, we live here but I have to go diving somewhere else. What could be done about these changes? Everyone has to cooperate. Non-profit groups promoting sustainable development are one way forward. For our business, we’re not focusing only on profit, but also on providing work for people and doing good things for the community. For example, we’ve given away a lot of land to use for hospitals, schools, police stations, temples, roads and more. What are the most positive changes you’ve seen? I can see that now people are aware of what we should do to help make Phuket a good place to live, the place to do business in the future. We hear more and more discussion about how Phuket can be sustainable, how we can manage all the problems. Even with the protests now, I can see that the new generation is more aware of politics and the rights of the people. It’s not like before when we thought it was nothing really to do with us. Now

it’s like it's knocking on your door. Everyone’s affected by that. The positive thing I can see is that people feel they’ve got to do something. Not just dreaming, but having real ideas for change. What's the issue that needs to be fixed most urgently? Transportation. It’s not only infrastructure, but the people who use the roads have to follow the rules; we have a lot of accidents. I’m the vice-president of the Phuket Real Estate Association and we’ve run two seminars to discuss how to deal with the transportation problem. Politicians from Bangkok came to the seminars and later on we got funds to improve the roads and transportation in Phuket. The key is cooperation. We already have the information. We have the police, the OrBorTor [subdistrict councils], the department of roads and rural roads and others. They have to use all the data to solve the problems together in a way that’s beneficial for the whole island. People have started using social media to help. I opened a Line channel called “Phuket Traffic" (in Thai), hoping that it would be a tool where the members can share useful information. For example, when drivers see a heavy traffic or an accident they can post it to the channel; some radio stations even use the information. In the morning we host the radio channel 93 from 8.30 to 9.00 to update people on the traffic situation. It’s very easy. Everyone can just type, take a photo or even record their voice to share. What kind of car do you drive? A Honda CR-Z. It’s only 1.5L but with a hybrid engine and hybrid battery. It’s fun to drive, a great design and saves gas. If you expand the trunk you can put in three golf bags! There are only a couple of CR-Zs in Phuket. This model came after the Honda factory in Ayuthaya was flooded in 2011, so they started to import three models including the CR-Z. Was that a nightmare time for you, with Honda under water? We didn’t have any cars for sale for eight months. We could only fix the cars, but we could hardly even do that because before the floods in Thailand there was the tsunami in Japan, which already affected the manufacturing of cars. The car business is not easy. Aside from the Phuket Real Estate Association, are you involved with any other clubs or associations? I’m in the Peranakan Association and my company also supports this. Khun Sukanya Phuttipun, my aunt, is a vice-president. We have been trying to preserve our culture while turning Phuket old town into a tourist attraction. I’m also in the Phuket Environmental Foundation. We have meetings almost every month with people from different industries and some local politicians to try to see how we can make Phuket a better place to live. What do you think the future holds for you? My dreams are not big. I just want to make this place good for living, where I can raise my family, and where perhaps the next generation will remember me as one of the guys who did some good things on this island.

PHUKET STREET FOOD SCENE
SCENE Tropical Phuket is most famous for its beaches, but to experience the real heart and soul of the island it’s essential to delve into its local food culture. Throughout Thailand, eating is a joy and an all-day topic of conversation − and Phuket is no exception. When Thais are not busy eating they’re often talking about their last meal . . . or their next one. This is just a theory, but we believe that if people were to learn the vocabulary for Thai food only, they’d be able to follow 80 percent of the chatter here. From the lively markets to street stalls, to tiny family-run eateries with three or four tables, fresh fare is inexpensive and easy to find in every town on Phuket. And with so many roving motorbike food carts, lazy gourmets could just stay home or find a shady spot along the road and wait for the food to come to them! There’s no shame in eating cheaply here. We’ve seen some prominent local businesspeople and politicians happily slurping up 40-baht bowls of noodles at no-name stalls on several occasions. Immaculately dressed office ladies can often be seen at street-side food shops tucking into a plate of khao kha moo (stewed pork leg) or a similarly cheap rice dish, their designer handbags delicately balancing on a plastic stool beside them. Takeaway is also popular, and most every food vendor here will be able to box up and bag their meal offerings and assorted condiments with great skill and lightning speed. Their ability to cinch a plastic bag airtight with a quick wrap of a rubber band is impressive – we’ve never had a leaky bag of fish sauce yet!

One of the easiest ways to find a tasty variety of cheap eats is to visit a local festival, of which there are many throughout the year in Phuket. Some of the best events for satisfying your local food cravings include the Phuket Old Town festival in January-February, the Chalong Temple Fair held annually during Chinese New Year and the Patong Beach Carnival in December. In Saphan Hin public park in Phuket City, there’s usually a festival of some sort or another about every month. The festival themes may vary, but they’re always teeming with food vendors.
Here’s a sampling of some of our favourite cheap Phuket dishes, none of which will cost you more than 50 baht Hokkien noodles. When served in a soup, this is a refreshing dish with round noodles, thinly sliced pork, shrimp and a delicious egg-noodle dumpling stuffed with herbed minced pork. Also in hot demand for the lunch set are ‘dry’ Hokkien noodles, usually stir-fried with a mix of pork and seafood – very hearty and filling, especially if an egg is thrown in.

PHUKET STREET FOOD SCENE
Dim sum. For most dim sum shops you need to arrive early in the morning to avoid missing out on the best of these tiny servings of steamed pork, seafood and vegetables. Diners are charged by the bowl, about 10-20 baht per serving. To find a dim sum shop, look for an open restaurant with either huge metal pots with rounded lids or stacks of bamboo steamer bowls.
Haw mok. This spicy crab mousse cake steamed and served in banana leaf makes for a rich and zippy complement to any meal, especially kanom jeen. Roti. A Thai-style pancake. This fried dough is served either sweet with banana and sweetened condensed milk or savoury with a small curry dish at the side. It was an early-morning beef curry roti that convinced us of something that the locals have long known: spicy breakfasts are a true delight. Kanom jeen Satay. Grilled lightly curried meat (usually pork) on a stick served with a spicy peanut sauce plus a side of sliced onion and cucumber soaked in vinegar. If you turn up at a party with a bagful of satay, you’ll be very popular indeed. Kanom jeen. This is a Phuket breakfast favourite, and it should be noted that ‘some assembly is required’ to fully enjoy this dish. You first need to select your curry – beef, chicken, fish, crab – which is put in a bowl with rice noodles. Then you’ll find a selection of crunchy vegetables including radish, sprouts and green beans, plus sauces, spices and herbs at your table, which you add and mix according to your taste. Artful eating at its best.

The Good and the Cheap Some of our favourite Phuket local restaurants Aroon Restaurant, Thalang Road, Phuket City Serves all kinds of roti, plus noodle and rice dishes. If this is too busy, try Abdul’s next door – also very good! Mee Ton Poe, at the Clock Tower circle opposite the Metropole hotel, Phuket City Open daily from lunchtime. Get there early because it can be difficult to find a table. Its speciality is Hokkien stir-fry noodles and a stall out front sells pork satay at 50 baht per 10 pieces.
Sakoo saimoo
And no meal is complete without a selection of sweets or snacks!
Here are some of our top choices: Salapao (steamed Chinese buns stuffed with BBQ pork or bean), khao tum mud (banana and sticky rice wrapped in banana leaves – only 10 baht per piece!), kanom krok (little round servings of coconut pudding, often topped with corn), kanom buang (crispy wafer with coconut cream and shredded coconut), sangkaya fuk tong (pumpkin and coconut custard), khao lam (sticky rice in bamboo – the black rice variety is our favourite), sakoo (steamed tapioca balls stuffed with pork and peanut, served with lettuce and chili). One sweet that’s almost too pretty to eat is luk chub, a sugary bean candy skilfully shaped to look like tiny fruits, vegetables or chillies. These are just a few of the endless choices of fresh ’n’ cheap eats on sale around the island. With only a few baht to lose if you don’t like a particular snack or meal, there’s no excuse not to be an adventurous and exploratory eater in Phuket. Happy dining!

N.C. Restaurant, opposite Royal Phuket City on Phang Nga Road in Phuket City With ultra fresh veggies, this is one of the best spots for kanom jeen. It’s also a one-stop shop for many cheap eats including Hokkien noodles, haw mok, any kind of rice dish, baked goods and sweets − and excellent massaman curry. Ko Yoon, Yaowarat Road at the Suriyadet fountain circle, Phuket City The best Hokkien noodle soup shop in Phuket, or so claims a sign hanging in the restaurant’s entrance. It’s like a sauna inside and rather eccentric in design, with dusty Chinese ceramics and silk flowers on the shelves, but it’s a great spot to watch all the comings and goings of the tourists and market people. Jade Restaurant, opposite the police station, Chaofa East Road, Chalong There are many dim sum shops in Phuket but one of our favourites is Jade. They also make a huge and tasty khao thom. Baan Sukapun on Thepkrassatri Road in Phuket City (just south of Nissan) also does a good dim sum, and we love its vegetable sakoo.

Hospitality sector commits to a Safer Phuket
It’s been another record breaking year for Phuket tourism so it may seem somewhat misconceived to hear that there are storm clouds brewing on the horizon, but this is exactly what some are predicting. In June, a delegation of foreign ambassadors visited Phuket with safety as their primary issue. And this concern was recently echoed by the Bangkok-headquartered Central Group that employs and exerts influence across nearly every sector in Phuket. Centara Hotels & Resorts Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing Chris Bailey predicted tough times ahead because “traditional mature markets are giving clear signals that they do not like what they see happening on the island”. Visitors’safety has to be of paramount importance and so Phuket’s private sector is leading the response with an enthusiasm that conveys the strength of their conviction. At a recent meeting of hotel general managers sponsored by Le Méridien Phuket Beach Resort, it was agreed that the time was right for a unified and collaborative approach to safety that would see organisations working together to drive changes in safety standards within Phuket. There was a consensus that, although geographically Phuket is an island, through its international holiday location status, it is a fully established part of the global community and it must eschew parochial standards in favour of a demonstrable and proven move to international safety systems and procedures. This transition is being led by Safer Phuket, a locally based notfor-profit social enterprise that highlights the issues, creates a voice, brings stakeholders together and generates funding solutions. As winners of the 'Innovation of the Year 2013' award, and with the full support of Phuket Governor Maitri Inthusut and relevant departments, Safer Phuket is bringing real change to safety standards in Phuket’s coastal waters.
Duncan Stewart, founding partner explains, “The key driver is economics. Hotels, tour operators and travel companies in Phuket must protect their investment, so when they predict trouble ahead, they respond. The challenges must be faced because a tarnished ‘Phuket’ brand jeopardises their investment in Phuket. Safety must always be a top priority.” A key component of Safer Phuket’s strategy is innovative funding. For example, they have initiated a campaign to build 50 lifeguard towers and to enable the towers and lifeguard service to operate to the same standards as Surf Lifesaving Australia, with funding being made from sponsorship and advertising on the towers. Safer Phuket reports that an increasing number of hotels, companies and other organisations within Phuket are joining and supporting them in the move to international safety standards. Duncan Stewart adds “Together we can effect change, so the more commitment, the quicker the impact and benefits.” If you or your organisation would like to get involved or can make any form of contribution, then Safer Phuket would be pleased to hear from you. www.saferphuket.org www.facebook.com/saferphuket

THINGS TO DO
Things to do in Phuket Traditionally, visitors have flocked to Phuket drawn by its pristine beaches, world-class shopping and sophisticated nightlife (okay, some of it is more enthusiastic than sophisticated) but this island has many more attractions that you should not miss.
Parasailing Ever wish you could fly like a bird, soaring and diving effortlessly with the wind in your face, and experience views of this beautiful island from a new and exciting perspective? Phuket now offers you the chance to do exactly this. It's called parasailing. The parasail is a specially designed parachute which you wear, and which is then towed behind a speedboat; suddenly you are airborne and looking down on mere mortals. There are several operators on beaches and prices start at 2,000 baht. Phuket Thai Hua Museum
81 B4
The oldest Chinese school in Phuket, Thai Hua School was built in 1911 and has now become the Thai Hua Museum, serving as a community and exhibition centre for baba arts and culture. The museum is a two-storey building with the upper level balconied internally to look down on the ground floor. Many of the exhibits and artifacts relate to the art and culture of China. Some of the old schoolrooms still remain as they were in the past with old school desks and photographs of former students. The Phuket Thai Hua Museum is on Krabi Road. It’s open on Tuesday through Friday from 1 to 8pm and Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 8pm. Entrance is free. It's certainly worth a visit.
