We all know one of those places… they never advertise but they’re busy. Why? ‘Word of mouth’. People tell their friends, “You must try..” and the word spreads. In this monthly column, we spread the word further about the great-value nooks and crannies that we know about on Phuket.

N.C. Restaurant

82 E5

7am-5pm. Opposite Royal Ph Phuket City on Phang Nga Rd. A one-stop shop for many cheap eats, including Hokkien Noodles, Haw Mok , Kanom Jeen any kind of rice dish , baked goods and sweets and excellent massaman curry. Deep fried crab meat balls served with plum dipping sauce are recommended . Their food is displayed in the counter so all you need to do is point at what you want. Opens in the morning and gets busy at lunch time .

Roti Nam Geang See Yak Taew Nam

81 D4

6am-12pm. Taew Nam junction, where Thepkasatri Rd crosses Thalang Rd in Phuket City. This place has been open for over 50 years and it ’s always busy. You can have the choice of the sweet roti or plain roti , served with a small bowl of curry made with your choice of chicken , beef or fish plus fried eggs-sunny side up. All this will cost you about 35-50 baht, including tea!

Chicken Rice Briley (Khao Man Gai)

63 B6

10am-2pm or when the food runs out. Rat Uthit 200 Pee Rd, Patong. Opposite Siam Commercial Bank. Kao Man Gai is a single-dish meal of steamed chicken served on a bed of rice eaten with the dipping sauce plus a bowl of clear chicken soup. Briley is probably the best in town as the place is always packed with locals. Price is 50 baht for a normal dish and 60 baht for the 'extra' one .

Rimtang Restaurant antt

81 C3

9am-5pm. On Thung Kha Rd near the Satree Phuket School, Phuket City. Rimtang is very popular with locals. Serving excellent quality Thai food and local Phuket food . This is the best place for Mango and Sticky Rice . Also don't forget to try Mee Hoon Kra Dook Moo-dry rice noodle topped with fried onion , served with a clear soup and pork ribs. Aside from the food , Rimtang also has a shop selling a wide range of local snacks and souvenirs.

Baan Kanom

The fleet includes seven vessels in total: the flagship MY Olympia 76, a 23-metre fly-bridge motor yacht for up to 20 guests, or the MY Mayavee 60, a 19-metre motor yacht of the renowned English family of Princess, for example. Due to the top standard of the yachts as well as the outstanding service onboard, Andaman Cruises is highly appreciated by international stars such as football player Cristiano Ronaldo, UEFA President Michel Platini, the German top model Heidi Klum and Hollywood actor Dolph Lundgren. In addition to the private luxury charters the company is also focused on yacht incentives. Among the corporate clients are BMW and Panasonic for instance. Andaman Cruises hosted their management incentives onboard the yachts. “Our company stands for luxury

experiences, lifestyle and premium hospitality. Today, people of all nationalities come from all over the world to enjoy the peaceful and pristine waters of Phuket and the Andaman Sea,” says General Manager Christian Schwind. The archipelagos of the Andaman Sea and its maritime national parks are renowned as some of the most beautiful yachting grounds in the world. Many people say that there is no better experience than to go onboard a yacht and see the breathtaking scenery of limestone rocks, white sand beaches and crystal clear waters around Phuket and the South of Thailand, including Phang Nga Bay and the coastline of Krabi. Guests are able to discover unique destinations and unspoiled spots. And a luxury charter with Andaman Cruises is the most exclusive and most personalised way to do that. REGATTA by Grenville Fordham

T

he 27th (2013) Phuket King’s Cup Regatta enjoyed a record fleet of 105 yachts, changeable but mostly adequateto-good winds – and unseasonal grey skies, drizzle and outright rain storms.

Not what King’s Cuppers have become used to over the years, but hardly conditions to dampen the spirits of people from all corners of the world who came to compete and enjoy, many from places where the weather is almost always pretty awful! With two separate start areas, and courses ranging from north of Kata Beach all the way down to Koh Racha (not to mention the dinghies and windsurfers closer to shore), you’d hardly have realised there were 105 yachts plus who-knows-how-many smaller craft competing in the same event.

photo by Bob Mot Tom Howards' beautifully renovated Marie G acted as Start Boat for the racing classes

IRC Zero winner Ray Roberts, One Sails Racing just ahead of 2nd place finisher Peter Ahern's Oi! photo by Max Ranchi www.maxranchi.com

Of course, this is the problem with yacht racing; exhilarating and fun competition for the participants but at best confusing – and at worst a poor second to drying paint – for spectators.

photo by Max Ranchi www.maxranchi.com King's Cup racing fleet doing traditional 'sail past' of the Thai Navy boats in honour of His Majesty the King's birthday

On board the Kata Rocks VIP boat (Thank you Kata Rocks!), this all quickly became apparent. As the boats got off for the staggered class-by-class start, heading left or right depending on which side of the course their tacticians thought (guessed?) was most favourable, questions were asked. “When will they start racing?” Answer: “They ARE racing.” Then, “So why are they all going to different places?” Answer: “Well.. they're actually all going to the same place, just on different roads...” And of course, “But how do they know who’s in the lead?” Answer: “They don’t yet.” And, finally, watching some of the boats finish the first race… “So Boat X just won?” Answer: “No. They just finished first...” Enough! A very fast, elegant Kata Rocks tender made its timely arrival and everyone except me disembarked, thoroughly confused, a bit wet and – yes – bored… Probably hungry too, since they left all the lunches behind!

REGATTA Kata Rocks' extremely competent skipper, Rob Taylor, then proceeded to entertain me for the rest of the day, dodging boats in the start area while they jostled for position, catching up with the fleet at various marks around the course and keeping in touch with some truly exciting, nail-biting tussles. But only if you knew what was going on... This year’s King’s Cup saw several of the class results decided well before the last race day, only two classes finishing with a tiny onepoint difference. Ironically, these two were the fastest (IRC Zero) and the slowest (Cruising) classes. And notably, whereas 10 years ago, most of the participants came from Phuket, Bangkok, Singapore, Hong Kong or Australia and – in the charter fleet, from Europe – 2013 saw the changing demographic of Phuket visitors reflected in the fleet – and on the scoreboard. Three class winners from Japan and two from Russia, with many more Japanese and Russian skippers making it onto the podium. Bring it on!

Celebrations in honour of His Majesty the King's birthday at Laem Phrom Thep (overlooking the racing fleet) included some distinctly military elements

And the winners... IRC Zero: Ray Roberts (Aus), OneSails Racing, 4th King's Cup win by just 1 point over Peter Ahern’s Oi! IRC1: Bill Bremner (Sing), Foxy Lady VI, 1st King's Cup win by a massive 11-point lead after countless tries. “A dream come true, and a long time coming," said Bremner. IRC2: Yasuo Nanamori (Jap), Karasu, 10 point lead. IRC3: Anthony Root (HK), Red Kite II, 6 point lead with Peter Dyer's local Team Kata Rocks just making it onto the podium in 3rd place. Premier: Ithinai Yingsiri (Thai), Pine-Pacific (aptly named for the winner of what is affectionately called the ‘Furniture Class’). 7 point lead. Sports Boat: Makiko Matsuishi (Jap), IPPAI. 6 point lead. Three out of four boats in this class were skippered by Japanese. Bareboat Charter: David Boekemann (Aus), Venture. 7 point lead over 2nd place, Russian Evgeny Neugodnikov. Open Charter: Nikiforov Eugeny (Rus), Sarawadee. 6 point lead. First 5 places in this class taken by Russian entries. Sunsail Charter: Peter Kochnev (Rus), Rambutan. 6 point lead over compatriot Andrey Novoderezhkin on Team Nord. a study of egg shells, dark chocolate cream, white chocolate mousse, mango sorbet and mocha sauce

Ingredients (Serves 8) Eggs; cut the top with a sharp knife Dark chocolate round garnish Candle

Berries Icing sugar

Cut egg trays, make sure you have 5 slots, painted in orange

Mocha sauce

Dark Chocolate cream 140 gm chocolate 40 gm sugar

60 gm butter 4 eggs

250 ml whipping cream 5 egg yolks 25 gm sugar 1 cup strong espresso 1 vanilla stick; cut in half and scrape the seeds

Melt the chocolate and butter, put the sugar and eggs in a bain-marie and whip till fluffy. Once the mixture reaches 90°, fold through the chocolate mixture.

Bring cream and vanilla to the boil. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg yolks and sugar. Pour the cream and espresso into an egg mixture. Whip properly. Put back into the pan and cook to a rose. Cool down. Put inside the half shelled eggs.

Butter and sugar the empty eggs and pour the chocolate mixture up to the top. Bake for 12minutes. Sprinkle with sugar.

White chocolate mousse 150 gm white chocolate 175 gm whipped cream 2 egg yolks / 2egg whites

25 ml milk 1.5 leaves of gelatin

Slowly melt the white chocolate in warm water, soak the gelatine in cold water. Whip the cream, and the egg whites in a separate bowl. Refrigerate. About Chef Ronnie S. Macuja Ronnie graduated from a Marine Engineering course back in the Philippines and found himself working in a hotel a few months later... so bizarre that until now he finds it hard to believe . He was offered a twoyear apprenticeship by the Manila Hilton International and passed with flying colours. He was part of the team that won top prizes two years in succession in culinary events competing against several International hotels. When he was offered work in New Zealand , he took the opportunity and never looked back . He was employed by Hyatt Regency in Auckland and from being commis chef climbed his way up to be Chef de Cuisine at the Top of the Town restaurant, the hotel’s famous fine dining restaurant.

28

Beat the egg yolks and the milk in a bain-marie until they reach the 'ribbon' stage. Add the gelatin. Fold in the cream and egg whites. Pour into clean half shell eggs. Refrigerate to set.

To assemble the dish Put the hot chocolate cream, white chocolate mousse (scoop the middle and replace with mango sorbet), mocha sauce, garnish with berries and hay and an empty egg filled with a candle light. Ready to serve.

Ronnie is known for his inventiveness in preparing seemingly ‘simple’ dishes in a completely different way. Khun Wallee Pachantabutr sampled one of his culinary creations in New Zealand and invited him on the spot to come to Phuket and work as a chef in her resort. He steered Salabua for 10 years and led them to be one of the best dining experiences on the island . His innovative cuisine has earned him countless well-deserved accolades in the culinary press. As with most true chefs, Ronnie is the essence of humility and politeness. He's so dedicated to his art that he spends hours a day in the kitchen , not only creating new dishes, but teaching and training newcomers, in a 'hands on' approach , to ensure that his staff reach his sky-high standards of innovation and creation . After spending many years at Salabua, he now has a new home in Chalong Bay. With the help of the Pachantabutr family, he opened an exciting place called Vset – an extraordinary restaurant with an extraordinary chef. 'Location, location, location' as the saying goes. It doesn’t matter how good you are, if you’re not in the right location, forget it.

Chino restaurant opened in February 2012. You'll find this Fusion South Chinese cuisine at Central Festival Phuket on the 1st floor. It's easy to find us, easy to take a seat, easy to order and easy to relax.

Baan Rim Pa is one of Thailand’s best-known restaurants, with a reputation stretching much further. It's perched on a cliff, with teak floors and the swish of the surf ‘downstairs’. There are some restaurants that just encapsulate the word ‘romantic’ and here, with Tommy Doyle playing classics on his grand piano, the sea breeze and the delicate aromas of world-class cooking in the air, this House by the Sea is one of the most romantic places to eat in Phuket. On a rocky outcrop, overlooking the Andaman Sea, Baan Rim Pa prides itself in superb, authentic Royal Thai Cuisine, an ambience second to none and the most spectacular views on the island. Baan Rim Pa is the winner of the prestigious Wine Spectator Award of Excellence nine years in succession.

Chino is one of the most cosy places to eat in Phuket. Come along and take a picture at the 'golden' cage or with our nice big bearcat.

Relish an authentic style of cooking of a diverse array of Italian favourites and new combinations served in a cozy ambiance, or savour pizzas in a separate casual seating area by a wood-fired oven.

VSET is a "restaurant at its extraordinary best". VSET, pronounced "Vi-Sate", in Thai means "extraordinary".

An evening must kick off with an aperitif! And so we did, at DaVinci's super-stylish 'V Lounge' cocktail bar. The restaurant itself is open air, but with enough cover for when the rains come (and with an airconditioned dining room too). The whole place is tasteful, beautifully designed and welcoming, while the children’s play area allows parents to keep their kids in sight while relaxing with a fine meal. Everything at DaVinci comes from the kitchen with the freshest ingredients. The Lasagne Al Forno and the Spaghetti Neri Pomodorini Calamari e Gamberi (all homemade pasta) are superb in their simplicity. For superlative Italian cuisine, with the freshest of ingredients, in a truly classy environment, be sure to try DaVinci and discover a renaissance of food. It's the first gastronomic restaurant at Chalong pier and has a naturally-thatched roof, quaint interior and an open kitchen where you can see Master Chef Ronnie Macuja and his talented team at work. Whether you prefer indoor or outdoor seating, this intimately proportioned venue serves up delicious fare in a homey atmosphere. Multi-award winning chef Ronnie's creations combine established methods with local flare and creativity producing a stellar menu. Notable dishes include: Phuket lobster salad, Foie gras parfait, Cognacflamed Lobster bisque, Australian lamb cutlet, Red snapper steak and Honey-glazed pork belly. These only touch the surface, while a fine wine list adds an essential touch and a tantalising selection of desserts rounds it all off. VSET is centered on the palate, but it's how everything fits together that makes this a truly extraordinary place. Lemongrass House

Lemongrass founder, Bobby Duchowny, studied aromatherapy – a healing art that promotes massage, when combined with specific herb and spice oils, as a method to reduce stress, boost energy and heal certain physical ailments – at the American Aromatherapy Association. Some years ago while on holiday in Thailand, he visited an organic farm in Petchaboon province and became interested in the natural healing properties of Thai herbs and spices. “I was particularly attracted to lemon grass as it was used in many popular Thai foods, as a medicine for stomach disorders and even as a repellent for mosquitoes,” he recalls. Bobby used lemon grass as his signature herb to create a line of essential oils, face and body creams, shower gels and bath crystals, which he and his wife Palita sold at Bangkok’s world-famous Weekend Market. What started, several years ago, as a modest enterprise has blossomed into a successful operation offering over 90 oils and a wide range of body care products through many outlets, as well as supplying many of Thailand’s top resorts and spas with aromatherapy oils.

To visit this home of award-winning spa oils, creams, soaps and so many other exquisite products is a delight. The aromas are enchanting. At Lemongrass, you can enjoy a spa treatment to sample and choose from their huge range, then take home your choice to enjoy at your leisure. They even have a great range of kid’s spa products.

25 percent aloe vera, white orchid and cucumber extracts. And he’s developed a revitalizing mineral muscle soak made from Andaman Sea salt crystals, blended with white orchid and chamomile extracts, to help draw out impurities and soothe and revive tense muscles. “People are sensitive to different scents at different times of day. It’s a good idea to get a variety of essential oils and experiment with what smells and feels good to you,” he says. “Our aromatherapy massage and body oils can be either uplifting or calming to the spirit. They’re carefully balanced hand-blended oils created by adding pure essential oils to nourishing, vitamin E enriched, sweet almond and jojoba base oils. Lemongrass has won many awards, including Condé Nast Hot List 2007, and has been featured in several top magazines, including Time Magazine’s “Best of Asia”. According to Time, “If you want to smell like no one else, try mixing a selection from the more than 90 natural scents at Lemongrass House.” Lemongrass House is located in Cherngtalay and Surin Beach, where you can buy their full range of spa products at modest prices, making perfect gifts for friends and family who can enjoy the aromatic scents of Asia in the privacy of their homes – no matter where in the world they live.

“Our advantage is that we produce the freshest spa products and our stock is never kept longer than three months; using fresh spa products can be likened to eating fresh food rather than processed food.” Based on his years of experiences at some of the top spas in Southeast Asia, Bobby has developed a full line of healthy skin care products. Sukko Cultural Spa

“The Best Spa In Southeast Asia”

SPA & BEAUTY

Sukko means "Beyond Happiness". My first feeling when I stepped through the impressive gates of Sukko Spa was, "I’m in paradise". The Sukko staff are dressed beautifully in traditional Thai style and the spa design, influenced by the ancient Siamese capital, creates a haven of calm yet regal serenity. I felt I had left all my troubles behind.

Chilled out by the soothing background music, I was filled with a peaceful wellbeing as I enjoyed the warm traditional Sukko welcome of the ‘Flower Floating Ritual’ – like ‘Loy Kratong’, where the idea is to float away past stresses and wish for luck and joy from that moment on A variety of 40 spa treatments – prepared by Sukko's certified Thai Herbalist and based on ancient Thai medical theory – is offered at Sukko, in packages lasting from 2 to 4 hours. Each package has a specific purpose and can be selected to suit your lifestyle or the way you feel on the day. These herbal recipes and procedures have been handed down through generations and are totally free of petrochemicals, synthetic perfumes or colouring. Some of the herbs and spices are grown in Sukko’s own herb garden and picked just for your treatment, ensuring they are as fresh as can be. I was pampered with the “Be Balanced” package; a 3-hour experience that left me feeling relaxed and refreshed. This 3-treatment combination began with 30 minutes in the steam room and the Jacuzzi, followed by a Thai Turmeric Body Scrub designed to soften your skin and awaken your senses. The scrub was followed by Sukko Synergy Body Massage (see description opposite). “Is this pressure okay? Too strong? How are you feeling?” my therapist asked me from time to time. “Mmm…perfect…” were the only responses that seemed to suit how I felt. Sukko Spa’s restaurant, Suk Savoey Spa Cuisine, presents a unique concept: "Menu by Blood Types" and "Menu by Elements". For those who want to exercise, the Suk Sanan Club provides a myriad of fitness opportunities, including ‘Rue Sri Dat Ton’ (the hermit self stretching), a traditional Thai exercise or, for something more strenuous, try ‘Thai Martial Arts’, a traditional and effective art of self-defense.

'IN IN SEA SEA' SEAFOOD BUFFET

Akkaradet Tangsunthornkajit Owner of IN SEA Seafood Buffet When did you open 'IN SEA' and why? IN SEA opened officially on 11 December 2013, but we had been setting up and were open for business earlier than that. I already owned and ran the King Kitchen high-end appliance store here in Phuket and wanted to help enrich the island further with a unique and high-quality restaurant that adds to the experience of travelling here. IN SEA began as an idea to open a seafood buffet that holds freshness and quality as its highest goals. What were you doing before? I was living here in Phuket with my family, running the King Kitchen business with my wife, who is also a big part of IN SEA. I definitely consider Phuket to be my home. Where are you from? My family, that is my parents, originally lived in Phuket. They moved to Bangkok to start business there and I moved back to Phuket to start operations here. What’s special / different about IN SEA? Well, I think at its core, the idea of a seafood buffet is not actually new, but to have one in this kind of beautiful setting, and with this high level of service and quality is something you rarely see. This is a restaurant where you can enjoy yourself, it is a place you can laugh, relax and really enjoy first-class seafood and other dishes.

What do you like most about what you do now? When I spent a lot of time involved with King Kitchen, the focus was very targeted and narrow. The customers needed something specific, but here at IN SEA I'm meeting such a variety of people who are here to enjoy a meal rather than talk business. It's been a real pleasure socialising and befriending new people every day. What do you like least about what you do now? The traffic jams on the way to and from the restaurant. ☺

Tell us something about your role in the business. I'm a shareholder and acting Managing Director. We all carry our weight of course and help in the running of IN SEA, but its day-to-day operations and oversight is my responsibility.

What do you hope to achieve within the next 3-5 years? Great success during which IN SEA becomes a well-known and appreciated establishment, which will hopefully give us the opportunity to expand to other locations.

What are the main challenges as they relate to your role? Achieving consistency in every area, including quality of the food, changing our buffet items to keep it interesting for return guests, and making sure internal management are running smoothly.

What do you see as your biggest successes to date? Actually, my biggest success is building a happy and strong family life. I'm very happy that my family – my wife and children – are very close and important to each other.

What are the biggest difficulties you have overcome? When you work with restaurants, everyday is important. So, creating a culture within our staff to realise how important it is to satisfy our guests every single day was a big achievement. Building that momentum was a key goal.

To what extent does the recession in Europe affect your business? Right now, it doesn’t affect IN SEA to a great extent because we're still seeing significant tourist arrivals here in Phuket, and I feel that overall the standards of people who live on the island are rising. This may change, but right now I don’t think we're affected much at all.

What is your main target market? Both international and domestic tourists as well as locals. It’s a very broad market. What's your approach to marketing? Our marketing has a very broad scope as well, to let everyone know that we exist and what we provide. There's social media which helps spread word of mouth among locals. We try to have key presence in printed media as well, such as billboards and brochures in the hands of people who meet travellers face to face. This is something that we're constantly testing and evolving.

Is IN SEA involved in any CSR programmes? Yes. Since the beginning we have planned to donate 1% of our quarterly profits to a charity of our choice. We feel that to best honour the spirit of our location here in Chalong, which means to celebrate, you have to give back to the community and share in your success. Please give us an overview of your typical day at work. I arrive at the restaurant around 9:00am and start my day with a coffee. Then, I hold small meetings with my kitchen team and service staff. Then I oversee the setting up of the buffet and greet and speak with customers as they arrive and enjoy their meal. From there, things come up all the time and I tackle them when needed. This goes on until the restaurant closes around 11:00, depending on the number and mood of the customers. We are flexible. What is your over-riding ambition at this stage in life? To make IN SEA the success that I and my partners believe it can be. Then to expand from there. Phuket’s probably best known as a place to enjoy a lazy tropical holiday, but those with a taste for adventure will find plenty to do here, too. Beyond the beaches are a host of action-packed activities that not only offer excitement, but great ways to keep in shape and connect with nature, both on the water and inland. Flying Hanuman

Phuket’s shoreline has seen some added colour with more and more kiteboarding enthusiasts seen racing across the sea. Kiteboarding, or kite surfing, offers a great test of endurance and strength to those who learn how to harness the winds using the distinct crescent-shaped kites to power their way across the sparkling waters.

Wahoo Thailand

Most Phuket kiteboarding activity takes place off Friendship Beach Resort in Rawai and at Nai Yang Beach. Those seeking to learn or improve their skills in the sport can take lessons and rent out kite surf gear at shops located there. Nopparat Thara beach in Krabi is another popular kiteboarding spot. Further offshore, more adventures await both for those who yearn for an Ernest Hemingway 'Old Man and the Sea' type of battle against feisty fish on a game fishing excursion and for those who wish for a more Jacques Cousteau kind of adventure exploring the ocean’s depths. Marlin, the species that eluded the old man in Hemingway’s tale, is just one of the types of fish that the Andaman Sea yields to game fishers. Sailfish, wahoo, barracuda, tuna and giant trevellay are other exotic species that fishing fans can expect to reel in on their trips.

Those hoping for a more local style fishing experience can arrange a trip on a long-tail boat, while the long-running Wahoo Luxury Yacht Charter team provides a way to explore Phuket’s fishing destinations in style and comfort with top-notch equipment. Fishing hotspots include the Racha islands while those with more time could organise multi-day trips to the Similans or Koh Ha and Koh Rok. Phuket is a prime launching point in Asia for exploring the depths of the sea, and there are many scuba diving choices for divers of all abilities. Several PADI-certified shops around the island offer instruction and trips to sites near Phuket and on liveaboards out to some of the world’s best diving spots, including the Similan and Surin islands. From the tiny clownfish made famous by the 'Finding Nemo' Disney cartoon to gigantic whale sharks, the Andaman is home to some of the world’s most fascinating marine life.

Kite surfing

Marc Francis Partiti of Sub Aqua Dive Center said, “The most appealing trips for diving adventure seekers are to the King Cruiser wreck, Shark Point and Koh Doc Mai, each of which are by far the richest in terms of diversity and quantity of marine life.”

Cable wakeboarding and cable ski are other waterbased activities that action fans can easily enjoy in Phuket, at both Phuket Wake Park in Kathu and the new Anthem Wake Park in Cherng Talay. The sport is d be pulled straightforward: strap on some skis or a wakeboard and by a moving cable around a course on a lake. Those with th more advanced skills can test their mettle on built-in obstacles. Pro wakeboarders from around the world come to train in Phuket – and they can often be seen performing their truly gravity-defying stunts – but beginners are also welcome to come and have a go. Some might say that driving Phuket’s hectic roads provides enough of an adventure, but a more fun way to explore is by ATV on an offroad trip, some of which take you into lush jungle terrain. More ATV operations are popping up all the time across the island but some of the more popular ones are along the road between Nai Harn and Kata beaches, in Chalong on the way to the Big Buddha and in Bangtao within the Laguna Phuket resort grounds. Go karting offers another behind-the-wheel adventure using specially designed vehicles to race around a track. Kids especially love the thrill of becoming a mini F1 driver for the day, while children not ready to take the wheel may ride along with an adult on a two-seater go kart. The most elaborate go cart track is at Phuket Go Kart Speedway in Kathu, while another track may be found next to Phuket Shooting Range in Chalong.

To find all these great places get yourself a copy of STREETS of PHUKET - 188 pages of detailed street maps, landmarks and local information - with a series of comprehensive indexes. It’s the easiest way to find your way around Phuket. Check www.streetsofphuket.com to find out where to get it – at only 399 baht it’ll save you time and fuel.

Those looking for a less frantic, though certainly challenging, mode of travel may wish to trade in their four-wheeled vehicles for a twowheeled mountain bike. Cycling is not an easy sport to pursue in Phuket generally due to the lack of bike lanes and safety awareness on the roads, but an outfit called Amazing Bike Tours has been taking cyclists to off-the-beaten track places that provide healthy doses of fresh air and beautiful sights. A day trip to Koh Yao Noi offers a peek into the region’s quiet, rural side along a 30km route that includes magnificent views across Phang Nga Bay, while an overnight tour to Khao Sok gives cyclists the chance for some bird and wildlife spotting as they explore the area’s lush rainforest. Ziplining is another way to zoom through a tropical landscape, but with a view from the treetops rather than on a trail. Flying Hanuman in Kathu offers a 28-station course with a wilderness walk and sky bridges as well as several zipline flights, including one that’s 400 metres long. In Chalong, Jungle Xtrem Adventures Park has a total of 72 stations with different circuits for varying skill levels. The journey around the treetops involves not only zipline flights but suspended bridges, walkways and nets. Taking a flying leap is an activity certain to get the heart racing and Jungle Bungy Jump in Kathu has been providing some bungee jump thrills for more than 20 years. Diving off a platform at a height of 50 metres and plunging towards a small lake doesn’t seem like the most sensible thing to do but that’s the point – the aim is to rev up the adrenaline and for just one moment know what it feels like to fly free like an eagle. Auctions in Thailand - How do they Work? With an ever-increasing number of properties in the re-sale market, and in some cases existing in developments where not all of the units have been sold, there is room for commercial auctions to enable faster sale of properties on or before a scheduled auction date. Auctions can summon thoughts of either very expensive artifacts or wines; or in contrast – cheap products that cannot be sold. In relation to properties, auctions are not indicative of the quality of the property, but present an opportunity for a buyer to ‘test the price’ of a property in a controlled environment and see if a good deal can be secured on the date. If a buyer is interested in a property prior to an auction, they can also bid beforehand to potentially secure the property prior to multiple bids on the auction date. Types of Auction In Thailand, auctions fall into a few distinct categories: 1. Distressed Assets, often the subject of non-performing loans, where auctions are conducted by banks. 2. Land Site Auctions for development, where land owners are seeking the best price available from potential developers, to avoid multiple negotiations and to reduce expense. There are also government auctions for certain sites. 3. Private Auctions for distressed properties and non-distressed properties. NOTE: There are more types than listed above. There are laws and regulations governing auctions in Thailand, including those conducted by the Legal Execution Department, which relate to distressed assets. Identifying a Professional Auction Provided general civil and commercial law is abided by, there are no fixed procedures to govern private auctions. They should of course be conducted professionally. To spot a professional auction, and before electing to participate, you should ascertain if: (a) the rules of the Auction are professionally prepared. A good set of rules internationally, which can be adapted for other jurisdictions including Thailand, are the Common Auction Conditions of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors. (b) the properties have been listed in conjunction with either a professional valuation or if not valued, by reference to market prices, and are not listed elsewhere at lower prices. (c) you can view the ‘guide prices’ so that you have an idea of what the ‘reserve price’ may be on the auction date, to assist you to assess whether you should bid beforehand or wait to bid on the day.

(d) the parties operating and supporting the auction house are professional and have appropriately prepared the relevant documentation, particulars of the property and method of sale. Prior to an Auction Before an auction, it should be noted that in many cases you will be permitted to conduct due diligence on a property to check legality of title; to conduct a survey, and a valuation of the property. The idea of a professional private auction is not to ‘force’ bidders to bid for unknown properties on the date. Bidders have opportunities to check the property prior to an auction date. Therefore, it is possible to set up appointments to view the property, inspect and to appoint independent lawyers to conduct due diligence checks. Making a Bid In many private auctions, you can make a sealed bid in which the terms of your offer are confidential between you, the auction house, advisers and the seller. If your bid is accepted, the property may be taken out of the auction listings and you may secure the property without the possibility of being outbid on the auction date. If you make a bid for a property to be auctioned, you will often be required to support the bid with a real deposit, unlike the case in so many other property transactions in Thailand, where a very small deposit may be required for ‘reservation’ of a property. Due to the fact that by making a bid, you may be prompting withdrawal of the property from the market and a seller would consequently lose the opportunity to sell to another third party, you must support your bid with a real deposit and therefore you must be properly prepared before submitting a bid. On the Auction Date On an auction date, the opportunity to conduct due diligence will have passed. If your wish to dispense with due diligence because you know the properties concerned, or know the results of prior due diligence, or wish to take a risk on bidding due to the price point, then you can commercially choose to bid. If you are not in such a situation, then you should seriously consider not participating. To attend a professionally managed auction, you will be required to present your identification documents, and to demonstrate that you are a real potential purchaser of the property, by presenting cheques for deposits on the properties you intend to bid for. If you do not bid, you will retain the cheques. If you do bid, then the cheque will immediately be used as a deposit, and you will enter a binding agreement to purchase the property upon the fall of the hammer. This will be supported by paperwork, but post-bid you will have been deemed to have made a binding offer. After the Auction There will be a gap between the auction date and when the property is transferred to you. You should arrange a law firm to assist you with the preparation of documents to transfer the property interest – which could be condominium foreign freehold; condominium Thai quota; leasehold land and building ownership; leasehold apartment ownership; or freehold land (which can only be transferred to a Thai national or Thai company and where foreigners are involved in such a company, with the strong requirement that the rules relating to Thai companies, the Land Code and other provisions of law are adhered to). Auctions are Fun Fun is a key word for Thailand, and although auctions are serious in so far as you will be committing monies to the purchase of a property, the fun in an auction exists where you are confident about your preparations to participate, and you enjoy the process of ‘testing’ price to obtain a good deal. Negotiating through bidding in an auction environment can be a test of nerve; resolve and focus. HÉLÈNE & PETER WOOD

Hélène & Peter Wood Peter Wood and Hélène Fallon-Wood, one of Phuket’s pioneering expat couples and founders of Tamarind Villas private pool estate, talk to us about life, leisure and helping others in Phuket. Where are you from? Hélène: I’m from Greystones on the ocean south of Dublin, Ireland. Peter: Kelly’s Corner, Dublin. When and how did you find your way to Phuket? Hélène: It’s Peter’s fault! In 1989 he met a Norwegian gentleman on a diving instructor’s course who led Peter to believe that he owned Marina Cottages in Kata Beach, which had one of the first established dive shops in Phuket. Peter went out to have a look, came back and said we’re going to live in Thailand. At the time I had to get out a map as I had no idea where it even was. Tell us more about your early years in Phuket. We just had a ball. Nothing happened with the dive shop, then we looked at doing Similan boat trips, but that never materialised, so we set up an export company based out of Chiang Mai. We sourced and exported goods to retailers back home and eventually opened a shop in Ireland – furniture and décor from mostly Vietnam and Thailand. First we lived in Karon Beach but there was no community of expats yet, then we discovered the Ao Chalong Yacht Club and decided we’d move. We rented a place behind Jimmy’s Lighthouse in Chalong, an area where a sailing fraternity kind of hung around. Then we moved to Fisherman’s Way. You ended up getting into property development. Can you tell us more about that? At Fisherman’s Way we had a beautiful house on the ocean and our rent was cheap as chips because we’d been there for years. Obviously the owners realised that the houses were much more valuable than what we were paying, so they came to us and said we had only one more year on our rent. We started looking for a house to buy but couldn’t find anything, so we decided to build. So Peter went back into what he always did in Ireland, which was to build homes for families. Our first development was Coconut Grove with 12 homes, one of which is where we still live. Then we built Coconut Palms, another development of 12 houses. We bought more land [on Soi Suksan 1 in Rawai] with a view to selling homes as well, but then Europe and the rest of the world started to go bust, so we decided that we’d keep them after finishing the building and rent them out holiday homes. Any new developments? For this project, Tamarind Villas, we’ve completed 22 private pool villas and a tennis court and now that we’re at full occupancy we’re just about to start building more on adjacent land.

Hélène, tell us more about your role as Honorary Consul for Ireland. I feel very privileged and proud to represent the Irish here. I was appointed by the Irish government to look after Irish people in Thailand, and I’m very firm in that belief. I’m here to help the Irish if they get into trouble, lose their passport or whatever, not to tell the Thais how to run their taxi drivers, jet-skis, etc. If I’d wanted to do that I’d have gone into politics. Tell us more about your family. Our son Brian, 18, is studying in the UK at Downside Abbey. He was at Harrow in Bangkok but we moved him to Downside for his last two years because he wants to go to university in Ireland. Are you involved in any charity work? Hélène: I help raise funds for the Life Home Project, a shelter for women and children affected by HIV/Aids, which was set up in 2001. Early on we were losing a woman a week because of a lack of drugs, or because they come to us too late. Now the copy drugs are so good and regularly available that we’ve started to become more of a children’s home – a refuge for children infected or affected by HIV. Our main goal now for the women is to help them recover and get re-established back into the community. We do at least one fundraising event a year, the most recent a golf tournament at the Blue Canyon Country Club. What do like to do in your spare time? Peter: I’m an avid golfer and a member at Blue Canyon and Loch Palms. I sail competitively and join all the monthly races at the yacht club and the King’s Cup Regatta each year with my yacht Windstar. Hélène: I’m not a Sunday racer, more of a gin and tonic sailor. I like to bike, I do yoga three times a week privately and we have a gym here, which I use every day. We travel a lot. I travel more than Peter because I really have that bug in me. What do you like most about living in Phuket? The weather, the food, the easy way of life. It’s getting a bit more strict in terms of rules and regulations in business but it’s like that anywhere else. In general there’s just a great ease about living here. What’s the most difficult thing about living here? Hélène: I'd love to speak more Thai but then again I’m an impetuous person who tends to fly off the handle so not having the fluency in Thai has probably saved me at times. I hope to come over as sensitive but I’m quite a forceful person. Any staff who start working for us are terrified of me until they get to know me. I have to rein it in. But we are who we are and I suppose after 20 some years here I’m nearly getting it perfected!

Helicam off to a flying Headstart

Helicam Electric Helibot

HeadStart International School Phuket has rapidly evolved and developed and is now one of Phuket’s leading International Schools. The new HeadStart International School will be built on 15 rai of land next to the Wichit Police Station on Nasua road, which connects Chao Fah West and Muang Chao Fah road. The new school will accommodate up to 750 students from 18 months to 18 years old and will have more than 12,000 sqm of purpose built educational facilities. The construction of the new facilities is set to start by March 2014 and scheduled to be completed by May of 2015, in time for the beginning of the 2015 academic year. Mr. Jazon Edouard of Headstart School commissioned Helicam to obtain aerial views of the location which they used to combine with a 3D computer CGI of the new school property, creating a vision of the built project and its proximity to Central Festival and central links. On location the Helicam crew flew into action using the remote piloted helicopter camera platform equipped with a 24mega pixel camera. The pilot /photographer positions the camera platform and positions the camera using ground monitor to compose the imagery. Using this system Helicam is able to obtain the desired imagery, which is then system-worked back at the Helicam office before being handed over to the client for their marketing needs. PHANG NGA BAY

With its dramatic landscape of steep karsts rising out of a calm, jewel-toned sea, Phang Nga Bay is the one place that no visitor to the Andaman region should miss. But what’s the best way to see it?

Many tourists set off every day on packaged tours to the bay and sadly – especially in the peak season months – there are often scenes of hundreds of people spilling off tour boats and crowding out the bay’s beautiful beaches and caves. A savvy traveller knows that to see a sight in its full glory, it’s better to chart your own path. And in Phang Nga Bay this is easily achieved. You could charter a luxury yacht and explore in sumptuous style and comfort, but for those lacking the budget or looking for a more traditional way to venture into the bay, there’s the mighty long-tail boat. The Hongs

The long-tail boat is a true symbol of coastal Thailand. Every travel book, article and video about Thailand’s beaches and islands will include images of this colourful vessel. These hand-crafted boats travel along smoothly, albeit loudly, most adorned with garlands and scarves around the curved bow as an offering to the sea spirits for protection. Its swiveling rear engine with a propeller at the end of a long shaft is the ‘tail’ that gives the boat its name. Long-tails are generally owned or operated by local men who are also fishermen or otherwise well-versed in the sea and sights in the area. You can catch a long-tail boat from several departure points in Phang Nga province, just over the bridge from Phuket. There are several signs along the road for ‘James Bond Island’ tours, but probably the best touring boats are found at Surakul Pier in Takua Thung about 12 kilometres west of Phang Nga Town. They’re large, well maintained and have a canopy roof for shade. Plus there’s attention to safety with all passengers given life jackets before they board the boat, including child-sized jackets for children. The price is 2,500 baht for the boat for the day, which could seat a dozen passengers comfortably. They will depart as soon as your group is ready, ideal if you wish to avoid the crowds and go in the early morning hours or afternoon. The first part of the journey is more like a jungle tour as the boat glides through an inlet flanked by mangrove forest. After about 20 minutes the water opens up to the sea and – behold! – you’re treated to your first sight of the bay’s famed karsts. From here there are several places to explore, but the following describes a typical journey.

66

s

g The Hon

PHANG NGA BAY The Hongs. A hong, or room, is a cave found inside some of the karsts, formed when the middle of the peak collapses into the sea. Though these little oases have become a popular and sometimes crowded sight, it’s still worth venturing in to see these true wonders of nature up close. Narrow access means that the only way in is by sea kayak, which can be hired at one of the floating barges just outside the hong entrance. The caves are a challenge to navigate, meaning that your kayak will be paddled by a guide, and there’s an extra cost for this at 400 baht per person. The guide takes you through a series of caves, some with only a sliver of space between the water and cave walls, meaning you have to get cosy with your boat-mates and lie back flat on the kayak to get through. As you squeeze through, be sure to look up at the cave walls around you to catch a sight of the sparkling stalactites: nature’s bling. If you’re keen to do more ‘honging around’, try booking a separate trip with John Gray’s Sea Canoe, eco-conscious kayak experts who will take you to lesser-known, less crowded caves.

Bond, James Bond. Love it or hate it, there’s no denying that Koh Khao Phing Kan – better known as James Bond Island – has some of the most beautiful topographical features in the world.

on James B

d Is.

A popular destination since it was made famous as the island hideaway of the criminal Scaramanga in the 1974 film The Man With the Golden Gun, it’s now often decried as a tourist trap. But arriving here via your own chartered boat gives you the chance to visit during the island’s quieter hours and explore without any time pressure. The small island with tall cliffs rising straight up from the sea has a perfect little beach that offers a view of Koh Tapu, or Nail Island: yes, that’s the one in all the postcards. But the fact that millions of people have seen it makes it no less stunning. Khao Ping Kan

yee Koh Pan

Koh Panyee. To see the best of Koh Panyee, this Muslim floating village attached to the base of a towering karst island, be sure to get there either early in the morning or in the late afternoon outside of the tour group hours. The front of the village is lined with scenic yet unremarkable restaurants and many souvenir stalls. Sneak down the narrow walkways to the other side where the village’s community life is better revealed. Here’s where you’ll see the local villagers simply leading their lives: washing clothes, preparing meals, praying, seemingly oblivious to the spectacular Andaman scenery around them.

Panyee football pitch

Take a look at the village football pitch and you’ll soon understand why this tiny town is home to some regional champion teams. The pitch is built on a floating raft with all four sides open to the water. Having good ball control means avoiding a splashy fall into the sea. From here, it’s a just short return trip through the mangroves and back to the pier. All in all, this do-ityourself long-tail tour offers a low-key yet fun way to putter around Phang Nga Bay and take in its magnificent sights at your own pace.

Phuket commits to high safety standards and safer waters The arrival of a new year has also seen the launch of a major new safety initiative within Phuket's marine sector. The initiative is called 'Safer Phuket' and will focus on five key areas, namely enhanced lifeguard capabilities, implementing international training standards, consistent beach management regulations, and the establishment of a world-class search and rescue service. Phuket is a magnet for tourists and it is this success that has prompted the recognition that success must also mean higher marine safety standards. Safer Phuket’s origins emanate from the widely reported delegation meeting between Governer Maitri and 18 European Community representatives in June of last year, where it was determined that focus and attention was needed within the marine sector. The initiative therefore enjoys the endorsement of Governor Maitri Inthusut, several governmental departments and HM Ambassador Mark Kent of the British Embassy in Bangkok. The campaign will be run and managed by a newly formed social enterprise which will operate on a 'not for profit' basis. Peter Grimes, a Safer Phuket co-founder explains, "The need for improving safety never goes away, so we chose to be a social enterprise business such that we can secure ongoing revenues which will allow us to build a structured, sustainable platform and support infrastructure for the safety programmes that we will introduce.

Duncan Stewart, Safer Phuket managing director and cofounder, feels there is room for optimism in the move to the higher safety standards, stating "We feel that Safer Phuket can make a real difference because we have unequivocal crosscultural, political and island-wide organisational support. Together with our partners, we have a collective vision shared and endorsed by the appropriate political and commercial forces, which will provide the framework necessary for a safer future for Phuket. Duncan Stewart continues "But most importantly, what is clear is that change will be driven and supported by hotels, travel operators, tour companies and the embassies of visitor countries and that these organisations have guest safety as a priority. For example, given the choice between a tour boat company that has a fully-trained and certified skipper, and crew to RYA international standards, versus one that operates to the old system, we have no doubt that these organisations want to protect their brands and their reputation by working with suppliers and companies of similar values and standards to themselves. Therefore, market forces will prevail with trained and certified operators becoming most profitable. Money talks and a commitment to high standards is a proven path to long term prosperity." Khun Tarin Tachthongchan, executive co-ordinator, believes the time is right. "With the 4th Asian Beach Games scheduled to be held in Phuket in 2014, the eyes of the world will be upon us, so we have launched the 2nd Wave funding campaign to build, man and operate 50 new lifeguard towers across all of Phuket’s main beaches. The lifeguard stations and professionalising of the islands lifeguards will be entirely funded by advertising and sponsorship of each tower. The positive news is that Safer Phuket is already in discussion with interested sponsors and supporters, even before we officially launch." More information at www.saferphuket.org or www.facebook.com/saferphuket

IMAGE asia welcomes the opportunity to partner with Safer Phuket to help bring about improved safety on Phuket's beaches and the surrounding waters.

THINGS TO DO

Phuket has plenty of choices when it comes to places to see and things to do or to try. We hope the suggestions here will enhance your holiday experience and perhaps persuade you to return in the future. Karon Viewpoint

Karon Viewpoint Sometimes referred to as the 'Three Bay

Dim Sum

Viewpoint', it's located between Nai Harn and Kata Noi Beaches. This is a tastefully developed facility with a Thai-style sala, which offers superb views on several levels. From here Kata Noi, Kata and Karon beaches can be seen and out to sea is Koh Poo (Island). Without doubt one of the island's best views! How to get there: Kata Viewpoint is located along the road between Kata Beach and Nai Harn Beach, just five kilometres from Kata Beach.

Phuket Botanic Garden Phuket Botanic Garden should be on a list of attractions to visit while in Phuket! The site is in the Chalong area not far from Chalong Temple. The garden features an amazing horticultural display split into 30 zones, each containing different species. The site contains a butterfly garden in addition to various other gardens: Herb Garden, Orchards, Sufficient Garden, Orchid Garden, Fern Garden, Cactus Garden, Rainforest, Japanese Garden, English Garden, Bali Garden, Water Lily Garden and a Palm Garden. The Phuket Botanic Garden also serves as a research centre for many rare plant species. Take a picnic lunch and enjoy these immaculately kept tropical gardens. Open from 9am-4.30pm. Closed on Wednesday. The entry fee for non-locals is 500 baht for adults and 300 baht for kids. For more information contact: + 66 7636 7095.

Mee Hok Kian

Oh Aew

Try local foods The island has a unique cuisine and both its entrées and desserts are a combination of local and Chinese cooking styles. International visitors shouldn’t miss the opportunity to sample the mouth-watering and unique offerings of Phuket’s kitchens. We have the inside track on toothsome dishes which will tempt your taste buds. Please allow us to offer a few examples: Oh Aew: An unbeatable Phuket dessert which is made from jellied banana-flour mixed with boiled red beans, ice, and sweet red syrup: available at Lok Tiean Local Food Centre, Intersection of Yaowarat Road with Dibuk Road, Phuket City Dim Sum: This is a steamed dumpling, filled with a choice of every imaginable variety of sweet or savoury filling, sometimes accompanied by Chinese herb chicken soup and condiments. Oh Tao: (Also known as Hoi Tod Hokgian). This is a fried oyster dish prepared with eggs, flour, bean sprouts and taro root. It’s a favourite Phuket snack. Mee Hok Kian: This is made with large yellow noodles similar to Japanese Soba. Mee Hok Kian can be served with pork-bone soup and/or dried noodles. A delightful variety known as Mee Hok Kian Pak includes fried noodles, soup, egg, fried onions, pork crackling and a choice of pork, fish or squid. Recommended Mee Hok Kian restaurants are Mee Ao Gay, located on Poonpol Road, and Mee Sapam at Sapam Village, Thepkasattri Road. Mee Sue: Phuket’s breakfast noodles with a salty taste and white colour when uncooked are boiled and flavoured with oriental spices. They can be served with sliced pork or chicken accompanied by boiled rice or rice soup.
