Phuket‘s Most Exciting & Stylish Contemporary Luxury Yachts Explore the Andaman Sea, one of the most beautiful yachting grounds in the world Andaman Cruises is a synonym for "Phuket‘s Most Exciting & Stylish Contemporary Luxury Yachts" and the leading luxury yacht charter company on the island. The fleet includes seven vessels in total: the flagship MY Olympia 76, a 23-metre fly-bridge motor yacht for up to 20 guests, or the MY Mayavee 60, a 19-metre motor yacht of the renowned English family of Princess, for example. Due to the top standard of the yachts as well as the outstanding service onboard, Andaman Cruises is highly appreciated by international stars such as football player Cristiano Ronaldo, UEFA President Michel Platini, the German top model Heidi Klum and Hollywood actor Dolph Lundgren. In addition to the private luxury charters the company is also focused on yacht incentives. Among the corporate clients are BMW and Panasonic for instance. Andaman Cruises hosted their management incentives onboard the yachts. “Our company stands for luxury

experiences, lifestyle and premium hospitality. Today, people of all nationalities come from all over the world to enjoy the peaceful and pristine waters of Phuket and the Andaman Sea,” says General Manager Christian Schwind. The archipelagos of the Andaman Sea and its maritime national parks are renowned as some of the most beautiful yachting grounds in the world. Many people say that there is no better experience than to go onboard a yacht and see the breathtaking scenery of limestone rocks, white sand beaches and crystal clear waters around Phuket and the South of Thailand, including Phang Nga Bay and the coastline of Krabi. Guests are able to discover unique destinations and unspoiled spots. And a luxury charter with Andaman Cruises is the most exclusive and most personalised way to do that. These yachts offer all the benefits and facilities of a floating villa – luxury, comfort and privacy.

AO CHALONG AO CHALONG Ao Chalong is the only year-round anchorage at the southern end of Phuket. It is the big shallow bay facing south and is protected by the large island of Koh Lon at its entrance. Only 10 kilometres from Phuket Town by road, this is traditionally the first port of call for visiting yachts, and offers many restaurants and marine service outlets on shore. The one-stop port control centre at the seaward end of the main concrete pier, together with new check-in procedures, is due to become operational by 2015. Currently, best information is to anchor in the bay and head for the immigration office at the land end of the pier to check into Thailand before proceeding to other locations. The long government jetty gives access to the west side of the bay at low water for dinghy and shallow draft vessels, which can be tied on the leeward side at the steps, halfway to the shore. The floating steel pier head allows larger vessels to come along side. There is a fee of 200 baht per yacht visit to access the jetty. Fuel and water are available near the jetty head. Large areas of sticky mud dry on low spring tides, making dinghy access to the beach impossible.

There are two approaches to Ao Chalong. From the south, care should be taken to stay closer to Koh Lon on your starboard side than to the mainland because here both the bank and the reef extend farther than the Admiralty and Thai charts suggest. Just south of the jetty there is a shallow sandbank, so motor until east of the jetty to find the best anchorage. From the east, head approximately 285°, leaving Koh Thanan, the small mid-channel island, to port. From there proceed past the safe water mark and then between the fixed tripod channel marks towards the Big Buddha on the hill. Avoid the shallow bank in the north of the bay to anchor amongst the other yachts. Yachts unfamiliar with the anchorage should proceed with caution, especially in the areas immediately north or south of the pier − including the marina entrance. Many of the recently (2013) laid mooring buoys have broken free, leaving large, unmarked concrete blocks, in some cases close to the surface at low tides. Several yachts have suffered damage and one commerical dive boat sank following a collision. Similarly, exercise caution if picking up one of the red government moorings as reports say that some have failed while in use, casting yachts adrift. Note, however, that these are the only public moorings in the anchorage. All other moorings belong to ‘resident’ yachts. Finally, at the time of going to print, the government marina is incomplete; pontoons and walkways have suffered considerable damage through lack of a suitable breakwater, which sources suggest may be in place by 2015. In the meantime, use with care.

A AO CHALONG

Anchor on the muddy bottom in 3-7 metres well offshore. Preferably well beyond the end of the 800-metre long concrete jetty, or to the north of it, as it is used daily by express ferries of all shapes, sizes and speeds. Holding is excellent and the most likely hazard is other boats with inadequate ground tackle dragging into you in a strong wind. Alternatively, moorings can be arranged at a monthly fee. Check with some of the local yachtsmen at the Ao Chalong Yacht Club for details of cost, location and safety of the moorings. In the southwest monsoon season, this is one of the few perfectly protected anchorages on the island (although some ground swell may be experienced). In the northeast season, on the other hand, conditions can be a little choppy because of the long fetch in the bay and this can make dinghy transfers to the beach uncomfortable. There are about 10 days per month when, due to the tide, dinghy access to the beach is impossible for a few hours. The Ao Chalong Yacht Club is found on the beach half a mile to the north of the new jetty (7°49.634N, 98°20.885E). There is a floating dinghy jetty in front of the club making access possible in all but low spring tides. Twice monthly races for keelboats and multihulls are held and visitors are welcome. The club restaurant and bar overlooks the bay and is a well-oiled yachtie’s gathering place and good for trading information. There is a useful notice board where prospective boat crews advertise their availability, and boats advertise needs for additional crew and items for sale. Monthly memberships are available for visiting yachts.

B A0 YON AND PHUKET AQUARIUM

On the west side of Cape Panwa is a concrete jetty serving as a base for the Hydrographic, Fisheries, and Marine Biological Departments. On shore you will find the Phuket Aquarium. Anchor anywhere in the bay in 6-8 metres on a muddy bottom keeping well clear of the floating pearl-farm on the west side. When rounding the cape, use the light on the rock and the safe-water mark to keep well clear of the off-lying rocks and reefs. To the northwest lies Ao Yon. This bay offers good shelter in both seasons and a fine beach and many cruising yachts make this bay their base. Enter from the east side of the bay to anchor in 4-6 metres inside the line of the fish farms on a muddy bottom.

From the Andaman Islands in India to Darwin, Australia… 244 pages with 533 stunning locations illustrating several recommended anchorages in each. Updated Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Andamans and Singapore chapters. Completely new Philippines (Palawan), Indonesia, Raja Ampat and Palau chapters. Hundreds of detailed new charts with GPS anchorage positions, awesome photos and the latest cruising info.

Take either of these roads to the Chalong Circle, a five-way rounda-bout and a bustling commercial centre. From the junction, roads lead to Rawai, Nai Harn, Kata, Phuket Town and the main highway to the north of the island, passing the new out-of-town shopping centres on the way to the airport. Order your copy of the 4th Edition SOUTHEAST ASIA PILOT by 5pm Thursday 19 July and have it delivered to the regatta venue by Sunday 22 July. Price 1,800 baht.

OCTOPUS ELECTRICAL SERVICES

Michael (Mick) Kealy Ao Chalong Yacht Club Commodore, Mick Kealy, has the weathered good looks of an adventurer, mariner and world traveller. He found his niche in life running his nautical electronics business in Phuket… We met at his yacht club (where else?) for sunset drinks. How old are you and where are you from? I'm 51 and I come from the tiny Aussie town of Bunyip, named after a mythical Aboriginal swamp monster, on the Princes Highway east of Melbourne. It has a population of about 950 and my family with my seven brothers and sisters is a fair part of that! I went to school there, then did an apprenticeship in electrical engineering. Once I had that qualification, which gave me the ability to get work anywhere, I started a life of travelling, sailing and adventuring which was a true passion for me. How did you come to Phuket? I did some wonderful trips working on sailing vessels, such as a gaff-rigged schooner, to many of the Pacific Islands. In between sailing and travelling I needed to generate income so I worked in mines and mining towns in Western Australia and the Northern Territory. I'd back-packed to Thailand previously, so when I was offered a crew position on another schooner from Pattaya to Koh Samui, Phi Phi and Phuket, I jumped at the opportunity. I loved Phuket and kept coming and going while I was working on boats in Singapore and Indonesia, so I eventually bought my own sailing boat and then spent a lot of time sailing around the Andaman region. When and why did you set up your business in Phuket? Well fate took a hand! I was sailing my boat off Ralai Beach near Krabi one day when I saw a lovely girl running on the sand. We got talking and it turned out she was an English girl who was also interested in sailing and had worked on boats. We ended up getting married and decided to settle in Phuket about 20 years ago. We now have two children, a son of 18 and a daughter of 15. With a more settled family life starting, I decided to start my own company, Octopus Electrical Services, based at Boat Lagoon in 1997. It was good timing as the yachting and boating community started to grow rapidly in Phuket around that time, so we were busy from the start. Since then we’ve grown to become one of the region’s leading marine electrical companies. What does the future hold for your business in Phuket? I think the exciting new focus for us is on alternative energy such as solar power, which is a personal crusade of mine and, of course, is really needed with the effects of global warming affecting the sailing community in many dramatic ways. How does running a business in Phuket compare with elsewhere? The Thais put a lot of emphasis on developing personal relationships over time and I think I'm fortunate as I am not as tough, or as outspoken, as many Aussies. So I've built up a lot of trust and long term staff loyalty, which has been a great plus for the business. I think my style is well suited to doing business here. In fact, and I don’t believe I'd survive in business back home! What are the specific challenges in running a business in Phuket? Mostly the red tape, which causes inefficiencies and lost

time. Slowly over the years I've seen improvements in these areas, but there's still a lot more to be done. Apart from that, one of the biggest problems facing everyone these days is traffic, which just slows everything down and makes things take longer to achieve than they should. Where do you live in Phuket? I rent a small house in Chalong which is low maintenance and backs onto the jungle. As the price and situation suits my present circumstances, I haven’t bothered looking into purchasing a property. Have you always lived around Chalong? When I first arrived in Phuket, I stayed at Nai Harn Beach, which is beautiful and peaceful. I enjoyed the beauty and the lifestyle of southern Phuket – Nai Harn, Rawai and Ao Chalong – and the area's great for sailing as there's always a safe anchorage somewhere, depending on the wind direction. Basically, southern Phuket offers a sensational choice of restaurants, great water sports options, beautiful scenery and a varied mix of nationalities, which all together makes it a great area to live in. What car you drive? A Toyota 4-door Vigo pickup. It's perfect for my as I can drive the kids around in the back to all sorts of sports and events – not to mention during Songkran Festival. What charitable or community work do you do? I’m the Commodore of the Ao Chalong Yacht Club, which is a voluntary position. I’ve been doing this for most of the last eight years and I've been on the committee for about 18 years. The club is very friendly and family-orientated and runs a huge number of events, races, courses and social activities, so in many ways it’s my social life as well as something that I enjoy doing for the community. I've also had a a few different boats and done a lot of racing – in which, I'm happy to say, we've placed pretty well over the years. What does the future hold for you? I'm very lucky! My work, which I love, is an extension of my life’s passion for sailing and travel, so I'm sure that I'll want to keep working. I think the idea of retiring is totally overrated. So I'll keep managing Octopus Electrical Service, I just need to find a way to get more time off for other interests. There’s no doubt that Phuket's getting more crowded and urbanised, so I might in future look at moving down towards Krabi where a number of interesting new marina developments are starting up. What does happiness mean for you? Family and friends. I have two great kids who I love to hang out with and share stories with. I'm also very close with my own family in Australia who I see regularly. Living in Phuket would not be the same without the great friends I have here. Apart from that, I enjoy being busy and discovering new things, whether it's travelling, sailing or in my work.

BACK TO THE FUTURE BY SAYANG ROPP

BACK TO THE FUTURE BY SAYANG ROPP

Paul Ropp: My love of history has shown me that some of the greatest things I witness today have been created in the past and brought forward to be continued and admired in the present.

Paul Ropp began his flare for fashion in Goa India in the early 1970s with his creation of the Chinese Tibetan Tea Shirt Company. Moving forward to Bali, in 1978, he gave birth to what is now known as the Paul Ropp franchise. Flash forward to today, and we are currently being introduced to his newest creation: a limited edition line of fashion dubbed "Back to the Future". "My love of history has shown me that some of the greatest things I witness today have been created in the past and brought forward to be continued and admired in

the present. This can be seen in architecture, art, literature, music, and fashion – colours, sizes, and styles may change yet the concept remains antique; simply reapplied to fit the needs of the present." Paul Ropp details his inspiration from the cyclical recycling of antique ideas that will continue to remain applicable and admirable in the present, because they continue ss to hold the foundational aspects of timeless aid, value and endurance. As Paul himself has said, "I thought it would be interesting to show the public some of the product I made years ago, and to see if that productt still g holds up today. The result of doing so, using social networking, has been absolutely ds astonishing. Many of our world-wide friends have shown interest in past styles and ideass dating back to 15 years ago. What all of this has shown me is that all great incredible expression that was appreciated in the past, still holds up in the present, and likely so in the future". And thus, with this, "Back to the future" has been born – a limited edition collection that can only be accessed via competitive pre-order.

LA BODEGA TAPAS BAR

Ingredients 1 small onion

1 tiger prawn per person

1 green pepper

½ kg mussels

1 red pepper

½ kg clams

1 glove of garlic

1 tsp sweet paprika

200gm green beans

500gm of short grain rice (ideally Japanese or alborio)

1 squid (½ kg baby squid) 300gm baby octopus

Method In a flat, not too high but large pan or casserole, cook the chopped pepper and onions in olive oil for a long time – until the point when you have only sweetness and the fried flavour of the vegetables. In the middle of this process add the finely chopped garlic. Add the squid and baby octopus chopped into small pieces, sautée, then take off the heat, add the paprika, and put back on the heat. Add 2 ½ times the rice volume of water and bring to boil. Then add a few threads of saffron if possible, salt, the green beans, the mussels and the clams and then the rice. From here the dish is going a need approximately 17-20 minutes to finish, so half-way though add the tiger prawns. You will know when it is ready as it is the moment when the rice is cooked, but add a little bit more time, especially when you use Japanese rice.

Phuket’s Wine Scene

Phuket is witnessing a rapid evolution of the range and quality of wines available and the social and dining situations in which they are happily quaffed. From a ‘beer and som tam island’ a few years ago, Phuket is becoming a full-blown wine connoisseur’s haven. From beer to Bordeaux in 25 years When Lisa Sol was the charming PR Manager of that iconic haven of fine food and wines, Boathouse Wine & Grill on Kata Beach, she opined that Phuket had been a "beer and som tam culture" when she arrived some 20 years previously. "I can clearly recall, that you couldn’t actually find a good bottle of wine around the Nai Harn area where we lived”, she said. “Phuket in the late 80s was very much a ‘beer and som tam’ island. The demand for wine hadn’t really started and many of the foreigners who did live here were ‘yachties’ like us and had 'grotty yachtie' tastes."

In the intervening years, Phuket has seen a huge influx of well-heeled foreign residents and repeat tourists from all parts of the globe that has fuelled the demand for the best in food and wine. Unsurprisingly, where there's a wellfunded demand, a complementary supply rapidly springs up to satisfy it, and so today's wine market in Phuket is close to world class in the selection of wines available, and probably ahead of world class in the dining situations in which they can be enjoyed. Phuket's marvelous tropical ocean-side vistas lend themselves to perfect restaurants and resorts such as Boathouse, Villa Royale, Baan Rim Pa and Catch Beach Club, in which fabulous wine events are regularly staged.

Phuket’s wine pioneers

Phuket’s Wine Scene

Randy Chinn observes that, “Importers today have really increased the variety of wines available in Thailand and, unlike in the mid-90s, we see a lot of New World wines from America, Chile, Argentina, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa which tend to be more fruit forward and easier to drink.”

The wrath of grapes Phuket’s enthusiastic embrace of all things oenophylic [Ed: had to look that one up! Basically means wine-loving.] has not been bolstered by successive governments' wine taxation policies. Says Randy Chinn, “Thailand’s wine tax is one of the highest in the world, so the prices compared to western countries are very high.”

But why pay through the nose? Acqua

Boathouse is a personal creation of renowned architect Mom Luang Tridhosyuth Devakul, better known simply as Mom Tri, a descendant of the King Mongkut Rama IV. The Boathouse was the first location in Phuket to seriously promote a local wine culture in the early 1990s and regulars flew into Phuket just to wine and dine there. Boathouse undoubtedly has one of the best wine cellars in Thailand, which is overseen by famed wine guru Georges Ciret. The cellar includes 750 labels and 7,500 bottles from 18 countries and guests are offered some 30 wines by the glass.

So far, we've been talking about the 'posh' places where you can enjoy wines from "OK" to the "pretty damn good" in splendid luxury. But what about drinking wine at home – which, after all, accounts for the majority of wine consumption in the west? Today, it's hard to believe that 12 years ago there wasn't a single dedicated wine shop on the island. Wine Connection put that right 11 years ago. "Wine Connection was the first speciality wine shop to open in Phuket 11 years ago in Chalong. Since then we've grown to be the largest chain of wine shops in South East Asia," said Michael Trocherie, Wine Connection's founder and CEO.

Georges explains, “The enjoyment of fine wine is a composite human experience which embraces setting and environment, complementary cuisine and good company, as well as music and even art.” Certainly Boathouse through the years has been a leader in all these aspects of Phuket’s wine revolution. Next came another legendary pioneer, Tom MacNamara at Baan Rim Pa, ‘the House on the Cliff ’ on the Kalim headland just north of Patong Bay. Tom came to Phuket for game fishing in 1988 and in 1990 turned his lovely house into a restaurant serving Royal Thai cuisine. To accompany this, he built another fine cellar and staged many wine events, bringing in Steven Roberto to oversee them. Steven went on to open Envison in Surin and started opening up the wine culture in that sector of the island. Randy Chinn, Baan Rim Pa Group’s Director of Wine says, “When I first arrived in Phuket in the mid 90s, the dominant wines in the market were from France and mostly at the lower end of the quality spectrum. Basically France shipped wines they couldn’t sell at home to a naive locality like Thailand where people used to ‘drink the label’ meaning they drank more for ‘face’ than from any real appreciation of what was in the bottle.”

The millennial revolution From around the turn of the millennium, the sophistication of Phuket’s wine market started to grow exponentially, driven by burgeoning tourist arrivals, settling retirees, villa owners and sailing and maritime sports enthusiasts – many of whom were well-heeled and knew a thing or two about good wine. Wine dinners and visits by wine makers became regular events with resorts and restaurants like Trisara, Boathouse, Villa Royale, Baan Rim Pa, The 9th Floor, and latterly Acqua and Blue Elephant leading the charge.

With 40 outlets in Thailand alone, ranging from pure wine shops to bistros, delis and bar/grill restaurants, Wine Connection has led the market in affordable wines, with a choice of more than 500 carefully selected labels from around the world.

2014 and all that Phuket’s wine market today displays enormous variety and sophistication. Newly-opened Kata Rocks offering the island’s first Enomatic wine dispensing machine, featuring 24 different wines served under argon gas with a stored-value swipe card to allow you to tipple to your heart’s content. Or 9th Floor sending their gorgeous waitresses for sommelier training to upgrade their skills. And of course the wine dinner, brunching and beach club bonanza just keeps on growing. But let’s give the final word on all this to Ian Lancaster, Charge de Presse of the Chaine de Rotisseur gastronomic society in Phuket who says, “Life is too short to drink inferior wines and SKI (Spending the Kids’ Inheritance) leads you into drinking even better wines.”

We’ll drink to that!

Twin Palms Resort on Surin Beach pioneered both Sunday brunches and beach clubs with their fashionable Oriental Spoon and Catch outlets, both of which also became havens of quality food and wine consumption

BOATHOUSE WINE & GRILL

Bryan Burger Executive chef of Boathouse Wine & Grill How long have you been with Boathouse Wine & Grill? What attracted you to the job? I've been with Boathouse by Montara for two and a half years. I first started with Boathouse as the chef for RE KÁ TA Beach Club, before being promoted to Executive Chef late in 2012. In my current job, I look after both RE KÁ TA Beach Club and Boathouse Wine & Grill. What attracted me to the position were the location and the opportunity to work at an iconic Phuket resort with a wonderful team. And, not many chefs get to work with a view from the kitchen like I do! What were you doing / where were you living and working before? Before joining Boathouse, I was working at Six Senses Destination Spa on Koh Naka, just off Phuket, as Executive Chef. At Naka our cuisine was focused on health and how, through food, you can help to rebuild and repair your body, which was a great learning experience. Before Thailand, I'd worked in Singapore, Koh Samui, Taiwan and Ireland. Where are you from? I come from a small city on the east coast of South Africa, called East London. Tell us something about your role in the business? I'm in charge of ensuring that both our kitchen outlets operate to the guidelines that we've set up. What are the main challenges as they relate to your role? As a chef, one of the main challenges has to be sourcing of products. It's not easy at times to find the product that we need. We're lucky to work with some great suppliers and producers, both locally and internationally, that help us to source the products we need. What do you like most about what you do now? There are many things that I enjoy about my job, but the one that stands out is the team we have at Boathouse. Everyone is dedicated to offering our guests the best experience from the time they walk in the door till they leave. And what do you like least…? Being right on one of the most beautiful beaches in Phuket and not having enough time to enjoy it!

What do you see as your biggest successes to date? That would have to be the success of Boathouse Wine & Grill in this year’s Thailand Tatler’s Best Restaurants. Although Tatler doesn’t rank its listings, our restaurant actually scored the highest overall in Phuket Please give us an overview of your typical day ‘at work’. How do you schedule your time? Normally I get to work around 8.30am and do a quick check on breakfast. After that, off to the morning meeting followed by some emails. Then lunch service. After lunch we have a quick meeting with the senior kitchen team members to discuss any events or special requests for the day. In the late afternoon we have a bit of time to try out some new recipes or work on menus for events to come. At around 5pm we start with dinner service. After 9.30pm it’s time to head home and spend some time with the family. We work long hours and sometimes it's hard, but when you have a good team to support you both at home and in the kitchen it's a lot easier. How would you describe your leadership style? I'm not a chef that shouts if someone does something wrong. For me to be a leader is to be firm but at the same time to be able to listen and develop the team. What's your over-riding ambition at this stage in your life? For me that would have to be opening my own restaurant one day. Every chef dreams of that!

Lemongrass House

Lemongrass founder, Bobby Duchowny, studied aromatherapy – a healing art that promotes massage, when combined with specific herb and spice oils, as a method to reduce stress, boost energy and heal certain physical ailments – at the American Aromatherapy Association. Some years ago while on holiday in Thailand, he visited an organic farm in Petchaboon province and became interested in the natural healing properties of Thai herbs and spices. “I was particularly attracted to lemon grass as it was used in many popular Thai foods, as a medicine for stomach disorders and even as a repellent for mosquitoes,” he recalls. Bobby used lemon grass as his signature herb to create a line of essential oils, face and body creams, shower gels and bath crystals, which he and his wife Palita sold at Bangkok’s world-famous Weekend Market. What started, several years ago, as a modest enterprise has blossomed into a successful operation offering over 90 oils and a wide range of body care products through many outlets, as well as supplying many of Thailand’s top resorts and spas with aromatherapy oils.

SPA & BEAUTY

To visit this home of award-winning spa oils, creams, soaps and so many other exquisite products is a delight. The aromas are enchanting. At Lemongrass, you can enjoy a spa treatment to sample and choose from their huge range, then take home your choice to enjoy at your leisure. They even have a great range of kid’s spa products.

25 percent aloe vera, white orchid and cucumber extracts. And he’s developed a revitalizing mineral muscle soak made from Andaman Sea salt crystals, blended with white orchid and chamomile extracts, to help draw out impurities and soothe and revive tense muscles. “People are sensitive to different scents at different times of day. It’s a good idea to get a variety of essential oils and experiment with what smells and feels good to you,” he says. “Our aromatherapy massage and body oils can be either uplifting or calming to the spirit. They’re carefully balanced hand-blended oils created by adding pure essential oils to nourishing, vitamin E enriched, sweet almond and jojoba base oils. Lemongrass has won many awards, including Condé Nast Hot List 2007, and has been featured in several top magazines, including Time Magazine’s “Best of Asia”. According to Time, “If you want to smell like no one else, try mixing a selection from the more than 90 natural scents at Lemongrass House.” Lemongrass House is located in Cherngtalay and Surin Beach, where you can buy their full range of spa products at modest prices, making perfect gifts for friends and family who can enjoy the aromatic scents of Asia in the privacy of their homes – no matter where in the world they live.

“Our advantage is that we produce the freshest spa products and our stock is never kept longer than three months; using fresh spa products can be likened to eating fresh food rather than processed food.” Based on his years of experiences at some of the top spas in Southeast Asia, Bobby has developed a full line of healthy skin care products. Sukko Cultural Spa

“The Best Spa In Southeast Asia”

Sukko means "Beyond Happiness". My first feeling when I stepped through the impressive gates of Sukko Spa was, "I’m in paradise". The Sukko staff are dressed beautifully in traditional Thai style and the spa design, influenced by the ancient Siamese capital, creates a haven of calm yet regal serenity. I felt I had left all my troubles behind.

Chilled out by the soothing background music, I was filled with a peaceful wellbeing as I enjoyed the warm traditional Sukko welcome of the ‘Flower Floating Ritual’ – like ‘Loy Kratong’, where the idea is to float away past stresses and wish for luck and joy from that moment on A variety of 40 spa treatments – prepared by Sukko's certified Thai Herbalist and based on ancient Thai medical theory – is offered at Sukko, in packages lasting from 2 to 4 hours. Each package has a specific purpose and can be selected to suit your lifestyle or the way you feel on the day. These herbal recipes and procedures have been handed down through generations and are totally free of petrochemicals, synthetic perfumes or colouring. Some of the herbs and spices are grown in Sukko’s own herb garden and picked just for your treatment, ensuring they are as fresh as can be. I was pampered with the “Be Balanced” package; a 3-hour experience that left me feeling relaxed and refreshed. This 3-treatment combination began with 30 minutes in the steam room and the Jacuzzi, followed by a Thai Turmeric Body Scrub designed to soften your skin and awaken your senses. The scrub was followed by Sukko Synergy Body Massage (see description opposite). “Is this pressure okay? Too strong? How are you feeling?” my therapist asked me from time to time. “Mmm…perfect…” were the only responses that seemed to suit how I felt. Sukko Spa’s restaurant, Suk Savoey Spa Cuisine, presents a unique concept: "Menu by Blood Types" and "Menu by Elements". For those who want to exercise, the Suk Sanan Club provides a myriad of fitness opportunities, including ‘Rue Sri Dat Ton’ (the hermit self stretching), a traditional Thai exercise or, for something more strenuous, try ‘Thai Martial Arts’, a traditional and effective art of self-defense.

The legalities of using beach land in Thailand

M

any of us notice that beach land in Thailand appears to be used for all sorts of activities. The use of public property is a topical subject currently, and therefore it will be useful to provide information as to the legalities of using beach land for a better general factual and legal understanding of the issues, as opposed to the urban myths that are often passed between sips of mojitos, the break of the latest deep house anthem – or waiting for the next taxi fare or umbrella user to appear. The beach does not belong to private individuals or companies The domain of the public state includes state property reserved for the public interest or for common benefit of the population, which includes beaches, according to Section 1304 of the Civil and Commercial Code. Further, any property, which forms part of the public domain, is inalienable, except by virtue of a special law, or a Royal Decree which means: you can’t sell, assign or deal commercially with beach land, without such special law. Associations and groups – vendors In Karon Sub-District in Phuket, local people set up an unregistered association named the ‘Beach Umbrellas Group’ for the management of cleaning the beach and selling beverages and food and renting umbrellas and sun loungers. The rules for this group are: (i)

members must be born in the area of Kata or Karon

(ii) alternatively, members must be on the lineage of persons born in the area of Kata or Karon previously involved in such activities of the group (iii) snacks are permitted, but not restaurant style food (iv) all umbrellas and sun loungers must be of the same style and colour (v) no additional umbrellas or sun loungers outside the existing stock and pool can be used

(vi) an annual membership fee of 1,000 to 2,000 THB per year is payable (vii) a taxation payment to the Municipality Office is imposed on the Beach Umbrellas Group (viii) memberships can only be transferred to persons who meet the eligibility criteria and must be subject to permission from the head of the Beach Umbrellas Group (ix) members receive a special identification/membership card with the signature of the local mayor, as issued by the Municipality Office There are different rules and regulations amongst associations in other parts of Phuket, such as Layan Beach and Bang Tao Beach. Further, Patong Beach also has different local rules. One common rule that cannot be changed by any local authority, is the rule of law relating to public property for the benefit of the public. What are locals and tourists allowed to do on beaches, all of which are public? There are no restrictions on using public property unless specified by a special law or Royal Decree. Therefore even a beach, which appears to have access blocked by a hotel, can be used by tourists, and locals alike. It is illegal for anyone to try and prevent such use. Often, some areas of the beach are made to look private, but this does not affect the law. Further, tourists and locals are not restricted from using the beach such as taking their own towels, food, beverages, or even umbrellas, to the beach. Set back rules / permanent structures / temporary structures For safety, any permanent buildings must be a certain distance from the beach. In order to comply with the regulations for a permanent building, individuals or companies must obtain a building permit. Not obtaining a correct building permit is a violation of law. Temporary structures are also not permitted unless they fall within the powers granted to associations such as the Beach Umbrellas Group, provided those powers derive from law and are properly issued and utilised by the municipality in charge. There is no difference between using cement or wood in relation to complying with these laws. For those that cry out for laws to be enforced in relation to use of public land, they should bear in mind – and be prepared to accept – that enforcement of law in a just and fair society means enforcement of law equally, without prejudice, and with the same application of law to any infringements. Please enjoy your Long Island Ice Tea or your Fermented Fish Guts Papaya Salad with extra chillies, whichever is your preference.

Intrusion alarms occur on one system, access badges are administered in a stand-alone database, and intelligent digital video technology runs on dedicated computer equipment. TRAVEL AROUND PHUKET

Phuket Old Town’s Fifteen ago, the historic Phuket Old Town district in Phuket Town was a charming but slightly faded place in danger of being lost to modern development. But Phuket residents and tourism figures saw the potential in preserving and promoting Phuket’s fascinating past, and a restoration effort of the Old Town was launched.

Soi Rommanee

In the years since, the five main Old Town streets, Dibuk, Thalang, Phang Nga, Rassada and Krabi roads, plus Soi Romanee and other small lanes have been given an uplift. Much to every photographer’s delight, unsightly power lines along Dibuk and Thalang roads have now been buried, allowing the beauty of the centuries-old Sino-Portuguese buildings to shine through. More power line projects are in the works for other streets. Soi Romanee has seen the most striking changes. This narrow oneway lane was once a rowdy red-light street for Chinese immigrants back in Phuket’s heady tin-mining days. Then it saw a decline, and up until about five years ago most of its buildings sat in an unused and crumbling state. Since then, nearly all of the two-storey structures lining the soi have been given a bright new coat of pastel-toned paint and some hip cafes and offices have opened up. A one-stop shop explaining Phuket’s past is found along Phang Nga road. This new Phuket City Information Centre has photos and displays that explain the meaning behind the different architectural details of the buildings in the area, plus models of an old-style well and oven. Here, you can pick up a free booklet called ‘Enchanted

60

Phuket Town’, published by the Phuket City Municipality, that’s brimming with information, in Thai and English, about Phuket Old Town and nearby attractions, as well as a suggested walking tour and map. Next door, another transformation has taken place at the On On Hotel. Built in 1929, the hotel’s intricate white facade has made a striking presence in the area, so much so that it was chosen as a backdrop in the film ‘The Beach’ starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Inside, it had a rather grand lobby area but the guest rooms upstairs were small and rather dingy. The oldest hotel in Phuket Town, up until a couple of years ago it offered cheap accommodation commodation favoured by backpackers on a tight budget. et. But the hotel has recently undergone an extensive renovation and major facelift. Now rebranded ‘The Memory at On On Hotel’, it has retained its charm – and even some dormitory rooms – but with choices like ‘The Memory Junior Suite’ things have clearly changed at On On.

TRAVEL AROUND PHUKET

Blue Elephant

Shrine of Serene Light on Phang Nga Road has been home to Chinese-speaking men with hammers and chisels for a few years now, as the 1891 shrine has been undergoing a major restoration. Formerly a private shrine belonging to a prominent Phuket family of Hokkien Chinese origin, the entrance was once tiny and hard to spot on the road. Now it’s been opened up and there are not one, but two, elaborate arches along the entrance path with fierce dragons among the intricate detailing along the top. At one side of the main shrine a new blue and white building in traditional Sino-Portuguese style is in construction, and the shrine’s interior has been painted and carefully restored. Be sure to visit the room behind the Chinese god statues, where large murals of Chinese warriors are found, part of the original design that have now been restored.

The former Standard Chartered Bank building at the corner of Phuket and Phang Nga roads is being turned into a museum for the Baba-Peranakan culture that thrives in Phuket and elsewhere around Southeast Asia. Baba-Peranakan grew from the blending of Chinese, Malay and Thai cultures following the large influx of Chinese immigrant workers to the region in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The museum is still under development – at the time of writing it was open only occasionally and there was a modest exhibition of women’s traditional Baba attire on display. The 100-year-old building once housed Phuket’s first foreign bank and sits opposite the town’s original police station and clock tower, also under renovation.

On On Hotel

One of the stately old mansions along Krabi Road now houses the Blue Elephant, a branch of the international Thai restaurant and cookery school found in London, Paris and other cities in Europe and Asia. This former governor’s residence was built in 1903; it has long been a stunning sight for people passing by, even in its dereliction. When Blue Elephant took over, it spent millions of baht in restoring the building to its former elegance, with added modern flourishes. It’s now a must-visit place for both cuisine and history buffs, and its stylish surrounds have made Blue Elephant a popular choice for wedding receptions and magazine photo shoots. Next door sits Chinpracha House, one of the few mansions in Phuket that are open to the public. The current owners are descendants of the original builder Prapitak Chinpracha, the son of an immigrant from the Fujian region of China who made his fortune in tin mining. The 110-year-old home has been maintained in pristine condition and is chock-full of a collection of photographs, furniture and artifacts from China and old Phuket. Its cool, tranquil interior feels a world away from the hot, hectic resort areas of Phuket -- a perfect antidote for those needing a break from the beach.

THINGS TO DO

Phuket may be the ultimate beach holiday destination, but there’s a lot more to experience than just translucent blue seas, powdery white beaches and guaranteed sunshine. Check out the following ideas for alternative activities to add to your holiday experience.

Sapanhin

95 C3

This is a public park located by the sea at the end of Phuket Road. Here there’s an old dredger-shaped monument called (somewhat unimaginatively), the ‘60 Year Mine Monument’, which was built on the headland at the southern end of Phuket Road in 1969. This commemorates one Captain Edward Thomas Miles, an Australian who brought the first metal ore-dredger to Phuket in 1909, hence the ‘60 year’ bit.

Walk way at Sapanhin

In former times, Sapan Hin was regarded as the gateway to Phuket because the promontory was the chief trading port for freighters. As time went by, more land was reclaimed and developed into parks and public facilities, which now include a sports centre, large playing fields, restaurants, and the Island’s boxing stadium. It’s also the site of two colleges – Phuket Community College and Phuket Vocational College. Every day many Phuket residents visit Sapan Hin for jogging or just to enjoy walking along the mangrove-lined paths. In the evenings people turn out to play tennis, basketball, volleyball, soccer, lawn bowling and takraw. Others come to picnic and enjoy snacks and drinks available from the small market. At the south end of Sapan Hin is the Kiew Tian Shrine, which plays a significant role in the annual Phuket Vegetarian Festival. All the street processions end here.

To get to Saphin Hin just hop in a tuktuk or taxi; they all know it. Or drive yourself there using Streets of Phuket.

THINGS TO DO

Phuket is a small island and our rivers are similarly of limited size. We can't compete with Niagara or Victoria when it comes to waterfalls. However, we do have several very picturesque falls and during the southwest monsoon a large amount of rain falls on the hills and the run-off can produce some spectacular volumes over the falls, all of which remain accessible by road Ton Sai and Bang Pae falls located in the Khao Phra Thaeo National Park are excellent examples and at 18 metres high, are the tallest. Combine a visit with a tour of the park and see the Gibbon Rehabilitation Centre. Near the falls is a restaurant and several kiosks selling inexpensive snacks. Why not bring a bottle of wine and make a picnic? Nearer to the main resorts is Kathu Waterfall which is a tad smaller than Ton Sai but has a shaded walk through the jungles above the falls – the only sounds to disturb the serenity are the calls of wild birds and the whispering sibilance of the rushing waters. Don’t forget your camera. At the foot of the cascade is a small restaurant – a favourite meeting place for Thai families on the weekend.
