Leaving his yearly mark Tripp: The Man in the Red Suit
Have you seen the bougainvillea lately? I have been seeing it as I drive around this past week and it is looking quite beautiful. All that I have seen are full of flowers and are brighter than I have ever seen them. The plant has several different colors, so it looks really impressive when there is a huge grouping of one color, or an array of colors spread out. I especially like the coral, almost peach, colored variety. Although not native to South Texas, the plant thrives in our mild winters. They are drought tolerant and love the sun –

Wright is afraid. It is not concern that his weighty suit could cause him to pass out. Nor that later tonight and tomorrow will be excruciatingly painful…nor that after his terminal cancer diagnosis he has been ordered to relax at home with his feet up to combat the grueling side effects of his chemo treatments. None of that matters when he puts on his red suit. See YEARLY pg. 4
Harlingen has more than meets the eye
When I think of Harlingen, I usually think about the Military Academy and the museum – but there is much more to Harlingen than that. Harlingen has a history that delves deeper than those few things that pop in our head when we think of the city. The City of Harlingen was founded in 1904 by Lon C. Hill – and his home was the first residence in the area. He built the regions original irrigation canals that are gravity-fed. This set the stage for farming that eventually became the mainstay for the area economy. If you visit the Harlingen Arts and Heritage Museum you can also visit Hill’s home. um is also on the grounds, as is the old hospital and a couple of other old buildings. The Museum features photos from Harlingen’s heyday. While I was visiting, they had an exhibit that featured antiques from the days of yore and the days of farming with less technology than we have today. They were having a little contest to see who could name each ‘artifact.’ I can tell you, with a farming background and from watching many old movies, I could name nearly every piece they had on display. About a mile away from the museum is the Iwo Jima Memorial Monument. The monument sits on the campus of the Marine Military Academy. The outdoor sculpture is the original work of art created by Dr. Felix W. De Weldon, a sculptor serving in the Navy at the time of the war. This sculptor was the model that was created to make the bronze sculpture in Arlington National Cemetery. It was given to the Marine Military Academy in 1981. The memorial depicts the six Marines shown in a Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph as they struggled to plant an American flag atop Mount Suribachi on the Pacific Island of Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945. The island had been taken by the Japanese in the early years of the war and the planting of the flag was a symbol to the free world of the struggle going on in the Pacific to preserve freedom. Harlon H. Block, a Weslaco native, was 18 years old when he enlisted in the Marine Corps. On the fifth day of battle on the island of Iwo Jima, his platoon was sent to raise that flag on
the island’s highest point. The flag raising was captured by Joe Rosenthal. Block was killed on Iwo Jima six days after that flag raising. In 1995, during a ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of the battle, Corporal Harlon H. Block was enshrined next to the Iwo Jima Memorial. There is also a Museum on the grounds that features Marine Corps memorabilia and a veteran’s hall of fame. Jackson Street in Harlingen is known as its historic area. It is immersed in history and culture with vibrant murals that bring the revitalized area back to life. Harlingen, like Brownsville, is another great city - as most of our Valley cities are – to just take a walk downtown and enjoy the sites. Historic Downtown Harlingen has been bustling with life for over 100 years. The palmlined business district offers unique shops, great food, history and more. When taking a walking tour of the historic area, you will walk into areas known as Six Shooter Junction and Silk Stocking Row. Downtown Harlingen also features 30 vibrant murals that depict the history and culture of the city. From the old cinema downtown to the historic Route 77, murals can be found both inside and outside many of the buildings. The murals depict the music, wildlife, agriculture, and more that made Harlingen what it is today. A full map and description of the murals can be found online at www.downtownharlingen.com. More information about the history of Harlingen can be found at www. visitharlingentexas.com and myharlingen.us/page/history.

What matters to him on this day is that although over 2,000 children have already sat on his lap in Nuevo Progreso’s oversized outdoor chair… while over 1,000 children still wait in the hot sun to pose with the jolly man, to visit the Santa whose infectious “Ho, Ho, Ho” brings a smile to so many. It is a common language… understood by all children. With those few words, they recognize The Man who cares about them. It does not matter that he does not speak their native language. They do not know his secret either…They do not know that “The Man in The Red Suit” is sacrificing much pain for their smiles. They do not see him wince once or twice when they are not looking. Mrs. Clause, his real-life wife, wipes his forehead and Martha Morin, the couple’s helper (who is also an RN, like his wife) puts cold compresses on the back of the Jolly Ole Soul’s neck. The three of them pray he will be back on the same chair next December. He knows the brain tumor in his
spinal cord could be the end of his laughter. Even the MD Anderson cancer specialists wonder how he can tolerate the intense pressure from the pepper-sized growth that is pushing his spinal cord apart. And he crosses his fingers that the chemo he is taking will slow the tumor, knowing the bones in his back will never recede, never go back into place. It is a lasting pain…until there is not anymore. For this season, donning the red suit means everything. Due to Covid-19 the children in Nuevo Progreso and this Santa will not be together this year. Instead, he will ride the fire engine in downtown Alamo’s Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 12. Participants will line-up at HEB at 5:30 p.m. with the parade starting around 6:15 p.m. This holiday will not be quite the same for Tripp. But this year some lucky children will hear his jolly laughter. And they are sure to break into big smiles when they spot The Kindly Man sitting in the fire engine. For many, he will be the genuine Face of Christmas.

The bougainvillea is native to South America. Even though you mainly see the plant as a bush or vine in south Texas, you can see them grown like a tree in Mexico and South America. My in-laws once told me, after a trip to Mexico, about one that they saw where the trunk of the plant was as big as a regular tree trunk. I can hardly imagine how beautiful that would look right now fully in bloom like the bougainvillea that are currently flourishing here in the Valley. Go out and enjoy the scenery – not just for the flowers, but also this lovely weather. ********

I cannot believe that Christmas is right around the corner. We have not even begun Christmas shopping. The kids just put up a Christmas tree this past weekend, but we have not put out any of our other usual decorations. I am looking forward to taking in
some Christmas light shows around the Valley and in San Antonio, though. We try to drive around and see what others have done at least once during the season. Is your park having a Christmas light contest? We would love to come and see them. We also try to give some time to a local charity during the season. This year, there are so many needing everyday items. Times are a little harder for some and I hope we find someone or a charity to give to like we have in the past. Is your park doing anything special this holiday season? Are you giving to a local charity this year? Making blankets? Anything extra you are doing to help someone? Let us know. Send a picture or an email. We would love to hear what you are doing to bring some cheer to someone. Email us at news@wintertexantimes.com.

From the Cheap Seats Helen Wright found a Schwinn bike back in Michigan for $20 and bought it, figuring she may want to ride after she arrived at Bentsen Palm RV Park in Mission. She did not realize at the time how much she would be using it. Wright, a first-year Winter Texan, can now be found along the road or on some Valley trails as part of a growing contingent of bikers at Bentsen Palm. The group, which has about a dozen “members” has been quickly growing in just a few weeks, more than likely encouraged by the near-perfect weather – that seems to have arrived about the same time many of the Bentsen Palm bikers arrived. Coincidence? “The wind followed us down,” said one rider, Cal, who arrived from North Dakota just about a month ago and is a first-time Winter Texan as well. “I found a work camper job here and was looking to do something this winter. We brought them down for a little riding. We had our little route up there in North Dakota but didn't know where to go down here so we met up with this group. I need to get in shape anyway.” On this day, riders just moseyed around on the streets within the park, but they have other routes prepped including about an eight-mile ride to the World Birding Center and back. Lenny Mais, an Iowan and yet another first-timer in Texas, was riding his fat bike, a wide-tired bike good for sand (like at the Island) and snow (not like at the Island…or the Valley) and often times used in extreme endurance races such as the Extreme Muck Ruck competition which includes boulders
and chest-deep mud to trek through. Mais is not using that for those purposes however, but it more than likely comes in handy on some of the sandlike trails nearby. “We wanted to get a little warmer this winter,” Mais said. “I found Work Camper on Facebook, made a couple calls and next thing I knew, we were on our way.” Wright said the $20 investment into her bike was well worth it, and with the COVID-19 pandemic affecting lives across the country, things like biking or walking is becoming more and more popular. Some of the people in the group purchased bikes since arriving. “We arrived on Labor Day and I thought I'd get a chance to ride and then we met all these people,” Wright said. “We've gone down the road and we've tried some trails. It's been a good time, and we've seen a lot of cactus on the trails.” Mais said the group just started and is hoping to expand the number of trails and trips it takes. He said with the Valley wind, the distance they travel is like a serious hour or two of mountain biking, minus the mountains and add the wind. “When we're riding in the morning it's windy but that will drop down later in the afternoons,” Maid said. “We go out about 2-3 times a week and may end up going more. It's an enjoyable time and the weather has been great.” The group does not have a specific goal for distance or any firm rules and regulations. They do have one general goal, however, according to Mais. “Have fun and don't fall down and break any bones.”

Visit holiday themed sandcastles
As one of our sponsors, Sea Turtle, Inc. gets a special place.
You can visit holiday themed sandcastles at South Padre Island. The sandcastles are an ongoing thing and this year the sculptors have worked hard to get things done. The Christmas village is currently open for vis-
itors. The village is comprised of 10 massive sand sculptures and several smaller ones. The sculptures are created by some of the most talented sand sculptors from around the world.
Located in the center of the town’s entertainment district and free to view (although donations are welcome), the sculptures are preserved, maintained, and updated on a rotating basis. The village can be seen on west Marlin St. right under the Ferris wheel. The sculpture garden was originally created within a 60’x30’ tent in 2019 by an international crew of sculptures in town for the annual SPI Sandcastle Days. That first year, sculptures had a display and musical light show. The display saw over 35,000 visitors from November through January. There are sculptures at the location year-round now. The village is typically open from noon until dark. The project, conceived and proposed by Lucinda “Sandy Feet” Wierenga, has now been a staple of SPI. The project is sponsored by local businesses and other donations. For more information, visit www.sandcastleisland. com.

While it may be a little farther than most restaurants, the Baffin Bay Seafood Company, located in Riviera, is certainly worth the effort to get there. The restaurant sits right on the coast of Baffin Bay, a well-known fishing spot for black drum, redfish and speckled trout. One of the most popular items on the restaurant’s menu is black drum ribs, usually served with hand-breaded onion rings. The Baffin Bay Seafood Company may just be the only restaurant to serve these tasty ribs fried with cornmeal. They are delicious! Especially with their homemade tartar sauce made with special secret ingredients. In addition to the black drum ribs, we tried the grilled and fried drum, which were both delicious. We just had to sample the fried shrimp and grilled shrimp. Both are very good, and my personal favorite was the big, plump grilled shrimp with a delicious fresh-catch taste. Steaks and chicken are also available for those who aren’t in the mood for a great seafood dinner. Save room for their delicious desserts! You’ll enjoy rounding out your meal with molten lava cake, brownies with ice cream or New York cheesecake. A trip to the Baffin Bay Seafood Company, combined with a sightseeing trip to the King Ranch, might just be unbeatable. The restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. They are located at 1294 CR 2360 E on the coastline in Riviera.

What a coincidence. Recently I explained in one of my communications about how San Antonio remembered the birth of Christ with luminarias lighting the way for Mary and Joseph as they searched for a place for the child's birth. While it is not the same thing, what an opportunity it is for all of us to see 2,000 luminarias lighting the pathways at Quinta Mazatlan in McAllen. What a sight that will be. Quinta Mazatlan is dedicated to spread appreciation of our natural flora of the Rio Grande Valley. The trails will be open on December 16,17,18 and 19 from 6 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. Tickets must be bought in advance with timed entries. There is a $5 per person entry fee. This is your chance not only to appreciate the luminarias and their special meaning but also to lend a helping hand to a very worthwhile organization. Have an enjoyable evening. Quinta Mazatlan is located at 600 Sunset Dr., McAllen. Call them at (956) 681-3370. ********
I know it is just December, but I am already thinking January 1 and New Year’s Resolutions. How many times did you resolve to lose weight, cut
WINTER TEXAN TIMES
out sweets or stop smoking? I know! I made many of those same promises only to forget them some two weeks later. But January 2020 was a little different. Instead of a negative resolution, I made a positive resolution that I did not forget. Are we not to accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative? Well, that is what I did. I vowed that I would remember to say please and thank you and to greet each person I met with a smile and "good morning". How simple, but what a difference it made - not just for me, but for all those around me. It was a win-win situation. I thought I would make other people feel good and I hope it did. But even as my salutations to known and unknown brought a smile to their eyes, that smile was reflected back to me and so it made me feel better also. Now what can be better than that? Now that I have challenged you to make a positive resolution, I need to also make a positive one. And what shall it be? Well, that's the challenge. We have almost a whole month to think about it. In the meantime, I am going to enjoy this beautiful month of December.
Christmas trees on display
The Christmas Extravaganza is now on display at Harlingen Arts & Heritage Museum featuring the creative ways people decorate Christmas trees. The exhibit runs through December 31. Trees range in themes and types depending on business and organization that set up the tree. There are several trees inspired by the Spanish heritage in the area and feature sombreros, zarapes and flowers. There are also more traditional trees with white lights and ornaments. There is
a small tree with decorated sun hats and flowers, and another with historic photos of the area. The North Harlingen Rotary tree is decked out in gold and blue. There are small trees and large trees. Some of the trees are made of wood displays, while another includes decorations on the wall. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. It is located at 2425 Boxwood St. For more information call (956) 216-4901. Admission is free; donations accepted.

Texas Master Naturalist Training registration open
The Rio Grande Valley supports two chapters of Texas Master Naturalist and both chapters are taking applications for the new class training that will begin January 7. The deadline to register is December 18. For the 2021 training session, the chapters will join efforts and provide virtual training; attendees will need a computer, iPad or Android pad. Using a smartphone is not recommended. In addition, field trips are a required element of training and will be online or in person depending on current county and departmental public health guidelines. Outdoor field trips will require appropriate masks and social distancing. Residents over the age of 18 and Winter Texans are welcome to join either of the chapters, despite residential location. The Rio Grande Valley chapter generally covers Cameron and Willacy counties; the South Texas Border chapter supports Hidalgo and Starr counties. The chapters share Cameron and Hidalgo counties. Texas Master Naturalist is a unique educational volunteer program sponsored by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Texas Sea Grant Program and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Both chapters share sponsors: Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Agent Tony Reisinger in San Benito and Javier De Leon, Park Superintendent at Estero Llano Grande State Park in Weslaco. “Texas Master Naturalist is a citizen volunteer program whose members have diverse interests and who become involved in myriad activities to learn about, work with, and help educate others about the special habitat and ecology of the Rio Grande Valley,” said Reisinger. “When nature is left to itself, a unique ecosystem develops -- after hundreds of years,” Reisinger said. “Today, that unique ecosystem is what Texas Master Naturalists learn about and help sustain: the Rio Grande Valley’s native habitat and the critters that depend on it.” Classes are taught by local university professors, and other field experts, including those from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department; National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration; and U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Students attend weekly Thursday classes from 6 to 9 p.m. beginning January 7, through March 25. Special field trips provide unique access and learning opportunities. Even with the social distancing mandates, trainees will still be able to join volunteer teams with other chapter members and work among the hundreds of local partners in activities at federal, state and local wildlife parks, coastal naturalist programs, cities, schools, and other public entities as restrictions lessen and more opportunities are again available. Volunteering options to chapter members and trainees may include studying ocelots and other mammals, to joining cutting-edge university studies, developing public native gardens, learning about native plants and habitat, citizen science projects, bird migration and shore birds to Gulf and beach inhabitants and trends, docent positions and native field guides. “Virtual classrooms this year may open the opportunity to those who, in the past, have been hesitant to join this organization,” said chapter sponsor De Leon, from Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. “It is our hope to encourage more Valley residents to take advantage of this unique learning experience and volunteer opportunity.” The cost is $150 and includes textbook, fees, t-shirt and one-year membership. Full scholarships are available. Requests for scholarships are also due by December 18. Note that scholarships are chapter specific.
