Golf Favorites is underway
Thanksgiving is this week and I do hope you all have a great one. With this, it means that cities throughout the valley are getting ready for their Christmas tree lightings and parades. If you get a chance, visit one, or more, of these and celebrate with your community. It’s a wonderful time of year, and it’s even better when we have the chance to spend it with others.
The weather is great for a round of golf. It pretty much is nearly all year in South Texas. Therefore, we come to you to ask you what your favorite golf course, amenities, golf hole and more are each year. This is our second week of coverage, please look at last week’s issue, and again next issue. This week’s coverage

Holiday Village returns for 12th season
The cottages of Holiday Village Brownsville have moved back to Dean Porter Park and are prepared for the 12th annual yuletide event. With nine new and updated displays, this year there will be a total of 33 fully decorated cottages lining the sidewalks. For those who may not know, the Holiday Village at Dean Porter Park in Brownsville is a collection of miniature cottages, each one measuring about 10’ wide x 8’ deep and over 11’ tall, which are adorned inside and out with the most whimsical and adorable holiday trimmings. The Village is set up in the park every November, free and open to the public, and runs from the Monday before Thanksgiving through the first of the year. This family-friendly attraction is funded by grants and sponsors and organized entirely by volunteers. “We’re so excited to be back at the park this year, having missed our 2020 season due to the pandemic,” said Laurie Ray, Holiday Village Chair. “New to our line-up this year are OrangeTinsel Fitness, Frosty Bank, Our Heroes and Market Center, along with several updated cottages,” said Ray. “We are already seeing a great deal of interest from potential sponsors for our 2022 season. We’re anticipating that sponsorships will soon be waitlisted. The community really enjoys and looks forward to the Holiday Village, and we are all very proud to be part of the project.” Opening ceremonies and the first official lighting of the season took place on Monday, November 22nd. Also returning to the park this year is Fritter, the Holiday Village elf. From the day after Thanksgiv-
ing through Christmas Eve, join in the fun of finding Fritter and enter to win daily and weekly prizes from H-E-B. Patrons can also enjoy delicious treats from a variety of food vendors, as well as performances by many local dance groups, choirs, school groups and more, throughout the nearly six-week long event. Admission is free all day every day, and the cottages are lit at 6 p.m. each evening. Santa Claus will be in the gazebo and available for free pictures every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night through December 19th. More information, entertainment schedules and Elf on the Shelf contest rules can be found at www.HolidayVillageBrownsville,com. Happy Holidays! This year’s sponsors include NovaLink, H-E-B Helping Here, OrangeTheory Fitness, GMS Waste Management, Lower Valley Dental Associates, Frost Bank, Lucy Lopez, the Brownsville Historical Association, BISD, the City of Brownsville and Brownsville Parks & Recreation.

McAllen Holiday Parade to bring music, joy and fun
The McAllen Holiday Parade organizers recently announced more exciting news to celebrate the Christmas season in the official South Pole of Texas, this time with a Rio Grande Valley musical spectacular that will air across the country. A line-up of 13 of the region’s top high school marching bands from McAllen, Donna, Edinburg, La Joya, Pharr, and Santa Rosa will be “Rockin’ Around the South Pole” as they perform in this year’s parade line-up. For parade organizers, the inclusion of the high school bands is more than just entertainment; it is to promote music education and the opportunities that performances like the McAllen Holiday Parade bring. This year’s band line-up will include the award-winning marching bands from McAllen I.S.D.; Donna I.S.D.; Edinburg
Consolidated I.S.D; Pharr-San Juan-Alamo I.S.D.; La Joya I.S.D.; Santa Rosa I.S.D.; and Valley View I.S.D. who will all be performing. Thanks to its partnership with Telemundo 40, the McAllen Holiday Parade, will help bring the McAllen Christmas spirit to a na-
tional Hispanic audience in the top 31 markets for TeleXitos, a Spanish-language network channel owned by the Telemundo Station Group. The network will air the multiple international-award winning parade on Saturday, Dec. 25, at 12 p.m. CST.
The actual event will step off at 6 p.m. on Saturday, December 4, from the McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium, 2001 N. Bicentennial Blvd. There are still a lot of other ways to watch the McAllen Holiday Parade live, including VIP Stadium seating and various parade route seating along Bicentennial Blvd. To purchase VIP stadium tickets, visit at www.ticketmaster.com or at the McAllen Performing Arts Center Box Office or at any one of the McAllen community centers, including Lark, Las Palmas and Palm View. Parade route chair tickets are also still available for purchase at any one of the McAllen community centers, for only $10. Celebrities Mario Lopez and Julian Gil will serve as co-hosts for the parade.

Stained Glass Museum announces opening date
The Gelman Stained Glass Museum in San Juan is scheduled to open its doors soon. The 16,000 square foot state-of-the-art museum is home to the most comprehensive collection of stained-glass windows in the United States. The museum is conveniently locatedacross from the Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan Del Valle. The museum, still currently under construction, is scheduled to open its doors on December 1. Days and hours of operation have yet to be determined. The building replicates the Latin-cross cruciform architecture of European medieval cathedrals, providing a sacred setting for these antique stained-glass windows. The windows have been salvaged from deteriorating churches around the country. Prior to opening, they will host an inaugural organ concert with
Dan Miller on Sunday, November 28, at 5 p.m. Doors open at 4 p.m. Among the oldest instruments in Western music, the organ stands as quintessential of concert hall and worship music. Immerse yourself in this organ solo concert in an authentic cathedral setting that effectively replicates the acoustics of Gothic monasteries. Miller has been a church organist since age 15 and has served at various notable churches. Miller is currently the organist for St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Beaverton, Oregon. He also serves many churches nationwide as a guest organist for their worship services. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.gelmanmuseum.org. Alamo Country Club
Alamo Country Club Peaceful and serene, this course was once considered a hidden gem. It is still a gem, but it is definitely not hidden. Boasting some of the tightest fairways and strategically placed traps, ACC is a dreamy course that will jump up and bite you when you least expect it. It’s a thinking golfer’s course, which means you’re probably better off bringing just a long iron, a pitching wedge and a putter – just so you don’t have to
think too much. You need to be accurate on this scenic and fun-to-play course. Address: 438 Country Club Dr., Alamo Phone: (956) 787-0907 Description: 9-hole, par-35 semi-private course Website: myalamocountryclub. com Golf Pro: Monte Medley, General Manager Yardage: Back tees – 2,332; For-

They are currently filling in sand traps and are hoping to bring in a new fleet of golf carts soon. Wide open and long, Cimarron will challenge you on every single hole, either by length or by making sure you prepare for your second shot widely before even hitting your first shot. No. 18 is a beautiful hole that offers golfers to show how long they can hit both their drive and second shot. Even if you clear the water on the second shot, you face a green that will either reward you for your bravery or make you walk off it thinking… what if? Address: 1200 S. Ebony Hills Golf Course
El Niño Golf Course
Ebony Hills Golf Course Ebony Hills has a simple layout with very few obstacles in your way, making it a dream course for any level of golfer to attack the greens aggressively and practice shots one wouldn’t dare try on a tougher layout with all sorts of hazards. One reminder though, like its sister golf course Los Lagos, the wind can do dastardly deeds to your golf ball, and your round. And while it may be simple, that doesn’t mean you could just rip everything mindlessly, even though that does seem like fun. Number 9, a 380-yard, par = 4 that goes a bit to the right, is the gem on this course – you must find the left
side of the fairway to hit it into the green at the right angle. Address: 30 W. place. A compact, but nicely laid out course, El Niño is affordable and will still give you challenges, whether it is from tee to green, or green to pin. You won’t recognize the greens, there’s been a lot of work done on them to make the ball roll truer, which means better scores (or more aggravation when it doesn’t drop). Address: 511 E. PVAS celebrates Giving Tuesday
This GivingTuesday, November 30, consider donating $1 to Palm Valley Animal Society (PVAS) every time you have wanted to adopt a pet or help an animal in their care. GivingTuesday is a global giving campaign built by individuals, families, organizations, businesses, and communities worldwide. It encourages people to take action to improve their communities, give back in better, more imaginative ways to the charities and causes they believe in, and help create a better world. GivingTuesday demonstrates how every act of generosity counts and that they mean even more when we give together. NOVEMBER 24, 2021 RAMBLINGS From pg. 1
During this time of year, I like to reminisce back to my younger years. Back to gathering at my grandparents’ house. Eating whatever veggies were brought in from the field within the last week – plus the customary green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, stuffing, turkey, and ham. My aunt always made a white cake with coconut – very reminiscent of your traditional Italian cake. We would gather late in the morning, eat lunch, and sometimes stuck around for leftovers for dinner. These days – with work and family obligations – I tend to enjoy a more quieter holiday season, but I still miss those days of a house full of people, sharing stories, laughing, watching TV, putting puzzles
together, eating all day, walking around the farm seeing what kind of mischief we could get into. I hope y’all have a great Thanksgiving holiday and take time to remember what you are thankful for. ********** As always – we enjoy hearing from you. Tell us what you have been up to this season. Let us know what you are doing for your community, or what you are discovering about you community. If you are doing something special for others this holiday season, or having an event in your park, we want to know. Even after the holiday season, we want to share your news. Send us photos, news items, contact information, to news@wintertexantimes.com.

Whooping Cranes Are Making Their Way to the Texas Coast
AUSTIN — With the first sightings of iconic, endangered whooping cranes along the Texas coast being reported, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) is reminding Texans to be on the lookout for these impressive birds as they move through the state. Whooping cranes are the tallest, rarest birds in North America. Currently, there is a population of around 506 individuals. Thanks to coordinated conservation efforts, whooping cranes are slowly returning from the brink of extinction. Whooping cranes make a 2,500mile journey from their Canadian breeding grounds in northern Alberta’s Wood Buffalo National Park to the coastal marshes of Texas each year. The migration south to Texas can take up to 50 days. During their migration, whooping cranes seek out wetlands and agricultural fields where they can roost and feed. The birds often pass large urban centers like Dallas-Fort Worth, Waco and Austin. Though whooping cranes rarely stay in one place for more than a day during migration, it is important that they not be disturbed or harassed at these stopovers. As a federally protected species, it is illegal to disturb or harass these birds. With sandhill crane and waterfowl hunting seasons opening and whooper migration in full swing, TPWD urges hunters to be extra vig-
ilant. Whooping cranes are sometimes found in mixed flocks with sandhill cranes, which are gray and slightly smaller. With their all-white body plumage and black wingtips, whooping cranes may also resemble snow geese, which are much smaller and have faster wing beats. A video detailing the differences between snow geese and whooping cranes can be found on the TPWD YouTube Channel. There are several other non-game species that are similar in appearance such as wood storks, American white pelicans, great egrets, and others, but a close look will reveal obvious differences. More information on look-alike species is available online. Wade Harrell, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Whooping Crane Coordinator at the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge (NWR), says the first of the season was a family group consisting of two adults and a juvenile on the Aransas NWR, along with another tracked bird that arrived in the Port O’ Connor-area, both on Oct. 29. Harrell says typically most all of the tagged Whooping Cranes he studies are on the move in November as they head for their wintering grounds. The majority of the birds arrive on the Texas Coast in December. Once whooping cranes arrive on See CRANE pg. 23

their wintering grounds, many stay in the same general area. Younger birds, however, often haven’t paired yet and may wander a little off their usual flight path, using areas quite distant from the Aransas NWR area. Harrell says due to the La Niña weather pattern forecast for this winter, the Southwest is in for a drier, warmer season. While this past summer was relatively wet and freshwater wetlands currently have water, a dry winter may require the use of freshwater wells on the Aransas NWR and surrounding areas to provide freshwater to the whooping cranes later in the winter. The USFWS is encouraging landowners to consider providing freshwater on their properties as well to aid the birds during their migration and wintering period. The public can help track whooping cranes by reporting sightings to TPWD’s Whooper Watch, a citizen-science based reporting system
to track whooping crane migration and wintering locations throughout Texas. More information about Whooper Watch, including instructions for reporting sightings, can be found online and by downloading the iNaturalist mobile app. These observations help biologists identify new migration and wintering locations and their associated habitats. Biologists remain optimistic that continued research and restoration work will ultimately lead to improved numbers of whooping cranes and say that new pending federal legislation, the Recovering America’s Wildlife Act (RAWA), could help in a big way. RAWA would provide the funding needed to continue the important conservation work that is vital for whooping cranes and other species throughout Texas. Learn how to help through the Texas Wildlife Alliance’s online toolkit. Texas Wildlife Alliance is a grass roots coalition formed to support RAWA.

The Salvation Army seeks holiday volunteers
While some may think it is still a little early to unpack the holiday decorations, The Salvation Army has been hard at work, planning Christmas programs for several months. Now, as the red kettles are appearing outside stores, and Angel Trees are being set up, volunteers are needed to help ensure men, women, and children in need throughout our community experience the joys of Christmas. Volunteer as a Bell Ringer – Register to Ring The Salvation Army needs volunteer bell ringers from now to December 24, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. The annual Red Kettle Campaign is one of the Army’s primary fundraising efforts of the year. Every dollar collected in the red kettles support the wide range of services and programs provided throughout the year right here in McAllen, including feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, offering emergency financial assistance, providing toys to children, and more. For more than 125 years, The Salvation Army’s red kettles have been a symbol of good will during the holiday season. Visit www.RegisterToRing.com and simply select the location, date and time
you would like to ring. You can split a shift with a friend or sign up as a group. Individuals, families, groups of friends or co-workers, and church groups are all welcome.” Volunteer to Support the Angel Tree Program Through the generous support of community donors, The Salvation Army will provide gifts for 1,800 children this year. They are seeking volunteers to help manage Angel Tree locations and later help sort and distribute gifts to program participants. Volunteer to Serve Holidays Meals For many years, The Salvation Army has served Thanksgiving and Christmas meals to approximately 1,700 residents. They are seeking about 50 volunteers to sign up for two - three hours for each of the holiday meals. Grab your entire family or sign-up to give back all on your own; there’s always time to start a new holiday tradition. If you’re interested in volunteering for Angel Tree, holiday meals, or something else, please call The Salvation Army at (956) 682-1468. To make a donation, or for more ways to engage with The Salvation Army, visit www. salvationarmytexas.org/McAllen/.

Palm Gardens Ladies tour Harlingen
The Palm Gardens Ladies Luncheon group started off this season catching up with old friends, getting to know some of the new residents, while enjoying a great lunch at the New York Deli in downtown Harlingen. After a nice, leisurely lunch, the group of 18 ladies ventured out to the streets to view the more than 20 larger-than-life-size murals which depict various aspects of the Rio Grande Valley’s history and
WINTER TEXAN TIMES
culture. In addition to the amazing murals that are part of the walking tour, there are many more wonderful murals to see in the downtown area. The group meets monthly and sets out to experience many of the unique and interesting venues the Rio Grande Valley region has to offer. Some past outings have included the Gladys Porter Zoo, Quinta Mazatlan and a riverboat cruise, to name a few.
