I can not believe the year is coming to an end. It has gone by so very fast in some cases. Other things seem to have dragged on. As we look forward to the New Year, we often think of things we can improve. There are several traditions that many across the globe have – like making New Year’s resolutions. Others include decorating a New Year’s Tree, dressing up nice, tossing tinsel, embracing your heritage,

Workcampers bring nature project to life

A couple of workcampers at Seven Oaks Resort in Mission have been busy this season. Their latest project has been a beautiful butterfly garden. So far, their work has paid off as seen by the abundance of butterflies, birds, and even worms that

Swing into the Landmark on Tower

By Herb Moering Winter Texans may find the new Landmark on Tower to be a “swinging” place to go for an evening of fun, food, and friendly conversation. To get into the swing of things, just sit down at one of the seven swingseat tables in the outside court area, that has artificial turf for grass. The food truck court, which opened Oct. 15, is the creation of Roy Landa, a property developer. He grew up in Alamo, about three blocks from his establishment, which includes his two brothers See LANDMARK pg. 16

New Year’s Eve celebrations

This year has been a long one for everyone, and most people are looking forward to seeing what 2022 has in store for them. Be sure to check out our Parks Calendar for events that are taking place at parks. I know these events fill up fast, so hopefully you have tickets to go some where to celebrate and start off the New Year. While there are many traditions around the globe, the huge one is seeing fireworks shows throughout the world. We could only find a few that are being advertised, which I have included here, but I am sure cities throughout the Rio Grande Valley are holding celebrations and fireworks. So be on the lookout in your city, on their websites, and their Facebook pages. South Padre Island If you are looking to ring in the New Year, why not spend it on South Padre Island? Leave all the worries of the past year behind, and start the year refreshed on Texas’ only tropi-

cal island. There will be many activities happening New Year’s Eve, but the highlight will be the fireworks display being held on the gulf side at 9 p.m. Most of the restaurants and bars will be staying open late to allow visitors to experience the island way of ringing in the New Year. Another popular activity on New Year’s Eve are the buffets at the hotels and the wide span of entertainment. With plenty of options, you can enjoy New Year’s Eve by the beach or the bay. To see upcoming events, visit sopadre.com/event-calendar. Pharr Join the City of Pharr for their first ever New Year’s Eve Ball Drop on Friday. The event will be held at the Pharr downtown Park from 7:30 p.m. to 12 a.m. Admission is free for everyone and they will have a live musical performance by The Spazmatics and fun for everyone.

The Mission Historical Museum presents MHM Lecture Series: Late 19th Century South Texas Ranch Families with Robert Ramirez. Robert Ramirez presents a captivating lecture on Saturday, January 8 at 11 a.m. at the Mission Historical Museum. Admission is free to the public. Coffee and light refreshments will be served. If you have ever wondered how people in the Valley lived in the late 1800’s, or what activities filled a day in the life of a local ranching family, your curiosity will be satisfied by reading “Ranch Life in Hidalgo County After 1850,” a book filled with details provided by the ranchers themselves. The late Emilia Schunior Ramírez, educator, school administrator and college professor, wrote “Ranch Life” as a chapter for a book on the history of the first century of Hidalgo County (founded 1852). Based on interviews with her parents (both born on ranch land) and other relatives, she paints a detailed portrait of life on south Texas ranches. She writes of the hard work, back breaking chores and responsibilities,

chief among them providing water for people and livestock. She also writes with much affection of the camaraderie, feasts, and celebrations on the ranch. For reasons not known, the book on Hidalgo County’s first century was never published, and for nearly twenty years neither was Schunior Ramírez’ manuscript. A professor of Spanish at Pan American College (now UTRGV), Schunior Ramírez died in 1960. Her son Alfonso Ramírez published the first edition in 1971 and for more than 40 years, her “modest booklet” was a valuable resource for others who took up the subject of South Texas ranching history. Now her grandson, speaker Robert Ramírez has published a second edition, which includes an appendix featuring newspaper accounts, photographs from that era and biographies of family members. Robert Ramírez was born in 1949 in Edinburg. He received his bachelors in English from Pan American University. His senior year, he wrote an essay called “The Woolen Sarape” and in 1973, his professor, the late Dr. Edward Simmen, included it in a book entitled The Mexican American: From Caricature to Self-Portrait. Publishers continue to include this essay in college freshman composition textbooks. Ramírez has also produced a slide show based on the book. Which will be presented at the Mission Historical Museum along with book-signing a copy for those who purchase a copy of “Ranch Life” at the presentation. The Mission Historical Museum is located at 900 Doherty Avenue, Mission. The museum is open Wednesday – Friday, 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. and every second Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. For more information on this program or any upcoming events contact the museum office at (956) 580-8646, visit www.missionmuseum.org, or follow on Facebook.

Speer to host book discussion

By William Renner, Reference Librarian Join us at Speer Memorial Library in Mission on Tuesday, January 25, 2022, for a discussion of the book The Woman’s Hour, to take place in the library’s Community Room at 6:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend and discuss the book. In July of 1920, Carrie Catt travels by train from New York City to Nashville. A tireless crusader for women’s suffrage, she comes to town to take charge of the fight for ratification, by the Tennessee legislature, of the proposed Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, guaranteeing women the right to vote. Over the years, several states have extended the vote to women, but many more have not. Now, under the proposed amendment, women’s suffrage will extend na-

tionwide—but first it must be ratified by three-fourths (36) of the 48 states. Thirty-five states have ratified, but momentum has stalled. Eight have rejected it, three refuse to consider it, and North Carolina will almost certainly reject it also. That leaves only Tennessee, where the prospects look grim. Written by Elaine Weiss, and first published in 2018, The Woman’s Hour is the story of the dramatic conclusion to the 72-year struggle for women’s right to vote. It also tells of the insults and threats— and objects—hurled at suffragettes over the years as they spoke out for a woman to be able to fully participate in her country’s political affairs—in fact, some of the most vehement opposition came from women themselves. We are reminded that the right to vote didn’t “just happen”. We will have some copies of the

DECEMBER 29, 2021

In just a few days, 2021 will come to an end and a new year begins. It is time to look forward to 2022, a New Year. It is time to make those New Year’s resolutions. This past year was a difficult year for many. Covid 19 attacked with a fury. Many lost family members or they lost jobs and much needed income. Now we have two Covid variants to consider as we make plans for the future. The future should hold two resolutions. First of all, let’s win the battle against covid. Second, let’s get back to normal. And how can we win the battle against covid? We should be able to win if we only follow the advice of our scientists and doctors. First, we need to be vaccinated and then follow up with a booster. Then let’s protect ourselves, our friends and our loved ones by wearing a mask. During 2020 and 2021, most

www.wintertexantimes.com

business establishments suffered. Certainly, tours and travel were affected. But even so, conscientious travel establishments continued to offer travel but with safety measures in place. Vaccinations and wearing masks were required. For those who were not vaccinated, negative tests were required before travel was permitted. If we want to return to unrestricted travel, we need to resolve to follow the advice of the scientists and doctors who recommend vaccinations and masks. Can you make that your New Year’s resolution? Can you help the world return to normal? During this past year, some travel agencies, airlines, and cruise ships enforced the recommendations of our scientists. Vaccinations or negative tests were required to travel. Six-foot distancing was enforced. Some cruises were even cancelled. Many countries closed their borders.

A GoFundMe account has also been set up to help the owner and employees. After seven years to make Stefano’s a favorite among the Harlingen community, the general manager says they will start over, according to the news report by ValleyCentral.com. We would like our readers to support Stefano’s any way they can – primarily by visiting their other location. Let’s all help them build back up after this tragic event.

You can even clip their coupon from our Taste of the Valley page for a 10% off coupon. If you don’t get a paper, visit our website and click their ad for the coupon. Our reviews of Stefano’s have always been great. The food and atmosphere at both locations has been a favorite by our Taste of the Valley writer and our staff. They have pizza, calzones, strombolis, soup, cheese bread and more options to enjoy. Their location in Pharr is at 500 N. Jackson. Phone is (956) 884-7715. First time visitor Jerry Cherrier (center), from Alamo Country Club, and his visiting son, Travis (left), were given a tour of the Landmark by owner Roy Landa.

in partnership, David and Gilbert. Roy says his aim is to have a place where adults can come for the food, try some of the 20 craft beer brews and four wines on tap and have their children with them at the same time. The idea for the food truck court evolved from a visit with his father and his 15-year-old son to the Rail Yard bar in Alamo and realizing his son was the only young person there.

Landa said he wanted to have a place where one could bring a grandparent or a kid and not feel odd. His first plan was to open a pizzeria but realized maybe adding another food choice would be better. He applied for a food truck permit but changed to multi food units when he learned the city could offer a permit with a maximum of six. He already owned the property on

the northwest corner of Business 83 and Tower Road, which contained the historical 90-year-old administrative office building once used by the Crest Fruit Company for its adjacent warehouse operation. That significance along with the historical marker and flagpole nearby marking the site of the deadly train/truck crash in 1940 provided the name— Landmark. The food trucks at the east end of the property, has a variety of foods. The six food choices are Mexican-style hamburgers, gourmet tacos, sea food, tater tots with chicken or shredded beef and the waffle bar that is similar to corn dogs. Landa is using the remodeled front half of the 8,000 square foot building for the pizzeria with its two-ton brick iron oven, which cooks at 600 degrees. Inside also are the beers and wines, which are measured out and paid for by the ounce, ranging from 24 to 49 cents. A bracelet tracks usage, which allows an individual to dispense up to 60 ounces. In addition to the regular fare, there are special events that includes

listening to bands on weekends. He plans to rotate the bands, wanting to give a chance on the outdoor stage to many of the 200 local bands he understands are in the area. There are opportunities for wouldbe-singers to take a turn at karaoke during the week. On Dec. 22, children were invited to have their picture taken with Santa, which Landa posted on his Facebook page, although many parents took their own photos. He also provided the 700 plus kids with a toy gift. About once a month, Landa holds a market night, with the first one drawing about 70 vendors. “The Market Before Christmas” was the latest on Dec. 23, where last minute gifts could be obtained. He says there are about 400 vendors from which to draw. At market night was converted Texan Jerry Cherrier, a first-time visitor from Alamo Country Club. The former resident of Wisconsin, said, “It appears to be a nice family setting.” He added, “It’s relaxing See LANDMARK pg. 18

while also providing a relaxing spot for the guests to visit and enjoy. “The complete vision and outcome, along with all the hard work, is all thanks to both of them,” said Cathy Sutton regional manager at Seven Oaks Resort. While in their search for just the right plants, garden nurseries have thanked them for their vision to create this habitat for the birds and butterflies of the area, she added. There are at least ten different bird feeders. There is even one that holds an orange and jelly for the birds that have a sweet tooth. “We have really begun to notice a lot more birds have taken an interest in the garden,” said Sutton. “We have also been successful in

attracting the monarch butterflies as well,” Sutton continued. In late October, early November, plants that supports all phases of the Monarch life cycle were put in the garden. They saw immediate results. “We have been noticing a lot of monarch caterpillars, and have been able to watch their entire transformation in changing from a caterpillar to a chrysalis, and then finally the amazing butterfly.” It’s been so successful they will be starting the process of creating another bird and butterfly garden elsewhere in the park while still adding to the current one. “There is an amazing crew of See NATURE pg. 24

with festivities and choices of food and drink.” His son, Travis, visiting from Minnesota, loved the state-of-the-art beer taps. Jerry’s wife, Sue, called the place “a treasure.” Landa, who had given the Cherriers a tour of the Landmark earlier, is considering a Winter Texan Day, probably with a late afternoon start time Corn hole competition takes place outside twice a month. A lot of people come to see the teams compete, which are created through a blind-drawing. Landa said he is very passionate about the property, which can be seen in the lighting and sound system with its 16 speakers both outside and inside. He also has 16 high-definition security cameras and off-duty police officers for added security. Even the spacious restrooms include a few special features. Most of the renovations were the work of his employees along with the cre-

ation of the outdoor furniture. His interest in the historical is going to play out with a wall of Alamo history in the building. He has been collecting old photos of Alamo business places, people and events that he plans to mount on a couple walls for customers to view. It is intended to honor many who made Alamo what it is today. It’s also a reminder to him of things he saw and did growing up. It is obvious the businessman is proud of his latest accomplishment, which he credits the city of Alamo of having been of important help along the way. And this three-quarter million food truck court investment is one of the ways of giving back which old and young alike can enjoy, he indicated, hopefully jettisoning their smart phone technology for a while. The Landmark on Tower is open Tuesday through Sunday, with hours of 6 to 10 p.m. weekdays, and 6 to 11 p.m. on weekends.

eating New Year’s food, praying, toasting, making noise, giving a gift, the countdown to a midnight kiss, singing “Auld Lang Syne,” and sending thank you notes. One that we have added to our traditions is eating black eyed peas. We have made a couple of different recipes over the years, and plan on trying a new one this year that incorporates bacon and some other things that are included in the New Year’s food category. And you can’t forget the cornbread. I will admit we don’t do this every year…. My husband and I are the only ones that usually eat the dish in our household. But I remember growing up with the tradition and having it at home or at my grandparents’ farm. What are your traditions that you do every year? Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

workcampers here at Seven Oaks,” exclaimed Sutton. “Robin and Korine are a perfect example of how awesome all of our workcampers are.” “We are so blessed to have them, and thankful for the work that they do for us.” The bird and butterfly garden is just one of the most recent additions to the park. Seven Oaks Resort has undergone a lot of changes in the last two years. They have newly

paved roads, a new pole barn, revitalized pool pavilion, and plans on revamping the dog park. Other updates and improvements are also planned throughout the park. “An incredibly huge thank you to Robin and Korine for their hard work, dedication, and leadership in transforming some grass and a couple of trees into a beautiful bird and butterfly garden sanctuary that will be loved for, and by, many generations,” said Sutton.
