This cooler weather has been quite welcoming. It has made it feel like winter finally. It hasn’t been too cold, or too nasty wet outside with it either. I think it has been exactly what I have needed to feel like it is the correct season. After it just being a little too warm for Christmas, I was ready for that cooler weather to bring some of the holiday spirit with it. My thing is, I don’t want it to See RAMBLINGS pg. 25

Bloodless bullfights return to Santa Maria

Although he was in a brief retirement, Fred Renk is back at it this season. Due to the hundreds of phone calls received requesting the continuance of putting on the world class bloodless bullfights, Renk is proud to announce they will be coming out of retirement to re-open for at least two bullfights this season. “For the last 20 years we have put on world class bloodless bullfights and will continue to do so as long as people want us,” said Renk. “We cannot turn them down.” The Santa Maria Bullring is one of the only bullrings in 49 states. For now, the Renks, Fred and his wife Lisa, will be managing the events. See BULLFIGHTS pg. 6

Winter Texans giving back left with full hearts

For the second year in a row, Paradise Park RV Resort in Harlingen has made quite an effort to participate in giving back to the Harlingen CISD community. The park has been finding someone in their community to help out the last few years and the Harlingen CISD Clothing Closet has been blessed by them the last two. A couple of years ago, Sharon Bargel, who has been heading up the charitable projects at the park, said they didn’t have a charitable project. It was then that she saw a Facebook post about a Reverse Advent calendar idea. She shared the idea with See HEARTS pg. 28

Bat Falcon makes appearance in US

The Texas corridor is a huge birding spot for many and is a huge migration area for thousands of birds as they escape the colder climates for warmer weather, and then come back through in the spring and summer searching for cooler weather. This year, while we have been finding new ways to entertain ourselves, the birds still continue on their patterns. The Valley is a hotspot to several migrating patterns and the Lower Rio Grande Valley has had a huge fallout this season. In the fall months, South Padre Island was full of color as Buntings and other birds passed through the area. Birders were Bat Falcon. These bulls go to the Professional Bullriding Rodeo after one fight – you can only fight them once – where they will chase the clowns the rest of their life. It was in early December, after getting requests to do shows, that Renk said he wanted to give more to the people that have always enjoyed coming to the shows. So he has planned two great events for this month. The 2022 events will be dedicated to Matador David Renk “El Texano,” QEPD, the sixth American promoted to full title Matador de Toros since 1902. The events will be held on Sunday, January 16 and Sunday, January 30. The young Matador Cayetano Delgado of Monterrey, Mexico will headline the opener, and appear on the 30th before he heads off to perform in Spain. Delgado is a classic matador who performs with sterling statuesque passes that literally make you tremble while watching his per-

In 1986, Renk started promoting American style bullfights by presenting the first ever events with the Houston Astrodome, then the Hemisphere Arena in San Antonio, Chicago and Ft. Worth. This began the American Bloodless Bullfights. Twenty years ago, Renk built the plaza Santa Maria in La Gloria, and started world class events that, to this day, have entertained Winter Texans and other tourists. “I built the plaza for David to have a connection with all the matadors and the bullfight world and continue in later years when for sure I would not be around,” said Renk just before his retirement in 2020. With the loss of his son, he decided to retire and hoped there would be some interest from others to carry on events. “It has gained an interest, and fame, and is inspiring to watch,” Renk continued. The bulls used in the arena are from the ranch of El Sabinal, a ranch that Renk helped to get started and are a pure Spanish blooded animal.

Reneck Revival: Laughter and merriment abound

In a world searching for some breaths of fresh air, Bob and Alta Courney carry a two-hour supply of oxygen for all to share during every Redneck Revival show. The Courtneys, also known as “Pastor Pudge and Sister Sludge” are not really holding a revival – just having some fun with skits, music, and clean comedy – a modern day traveling “Smothers Brothers” reincarnated. The Redneck Revival made its stop at Bentsen Palms RV Park in Mission and by the time it was over there had been plenty of smiles, and abundances of laughter, many miles of walking down memory lane – and even a few tears shed. Alta is an established gospel music performer and, after 38 years as a

PRCA rodeo clown, a retired Bob was ready for a change of pace. Bob had always made people laugh as a rodeo clown, and that trait didn’t leave him once he left the rodeo. Instead, he continued to make people laugh. “I started as a rodeo clown, traveled all over the world for years and did the comedy for that since I was 20,” Bob said. “When I retired and all I wanted to do was drive the bus; I started telling jokes and it turned into something we didn’t expect.” What it’s turned into is being named five-time Comedian of the Year among other accolades. They were once nominated for the CMAs (Country Music Awards) for Comedian of the Year. “We didn’t win,” Bob said. “But, hey, neither did

A revival may be coming for those interested in square dancing. Lessons and square dances are popping up at Winter Texan parks across the Valley. More importantly, both veterans and “newbies” are finding a keen interest in taking part. A few couples attended recently at Mission Bell RV Park in Mission, where Robert Ferguson teaches a weekly class Friday afternoons. Chuck Berry, not to be confused with the rock ‘n roll Chuck Berry, and his wife Phyllis are part of the newbie group. “We started just about a month ago and saw that Robert was offering it,” said the Topeka, Kansas resident who lives at Tradewinds RV Park. “We’ve taken some Western dancing, but we were raised on classic rock ‘n roll. I had an aunt and uncle that square danced, and it looked kinda cool but never got involved.” Now, they’re hooked, and the Mission Bell recreation center is the perfect place for square dancing. The dance floor could contain dozens of square dance groups, which consists of four couples, in a square. The center and the dance floor especially, Berry said, were made for square dancing. With appropriate music playing in the background, Ferguson would make calls such as Circle Left, Allemande Left, Do Si Do, Right and Left Grand and others, creating a dance where, when all the partners are in sync, is much like watching a symphony perform in perfect rhythm. Donna Ferguson (no relation) would know a lot about that. A C-1 (highly advanced) dancer from Fulton City, Wisconsin, is in her 24th year coming to the Valley. She began square dancing before she started making the treks to the RGV. Donna began square dancing in

1986. She remembers running into several people who recalled to her that their first memory of square dancing began in the high schools, with one week of gym class reserved to learn the basics. She had already “put in two hours of square dancing this morning,” and came wanting to share some advice for the beginners. “Pay attention to my shoes,” she said. “They are bowling shoes. They don’t slip but they let me slide enough on my feet where I just don’t stop like in tennis shoes. That is the best advice I ever received from square dancing. You can order them on the computer but get a quality name. They’ll last you.” Donna added that she’s not much of a television watcher but thoroughly enjoys reading. However, “I’d prefer to be out dancing, especially during the day.” In fact, her plan was to go home and call up a friend to plan some more outings. Ferguson teaches at Mission Bell in Mission, but there are others out there. Take a look at our Parks Calendar to find other classes and square dances throughout the Valley.

Denny’s: I keep going back

I have to admit, it’s hard for me to stray away from the breakfast choices at Denny’s. I’ve been a fan of “Moons Over My Hammy” since I walked into my first Denny’s in the early 1990s in Florence, S.C. I also love the omelets, skillets, and slams However, recently I stopped in determined to grab some lunch and pry myself away from my breakfast comfort zone. This was almost a challenge-the-restaurant meal. I’m usually disappointed with battered fish. It usually ends up battered minnow – all batter OR DISH and little fish. I’m also all or nothing with fish WITH PURCHASE OF ANY COMBO MEAL you get one chance only because I’m either gonna Not valid with any other offers. I was extremely pleased that it met all my criteria, something that I rarely find. Am I too picky? Nah. My daughter’s reaction to the bourbon bacon burger was simply – it was ‘really good. I could eat it again.’ Trust me, that’s a roaring endorsement. Speaking of her reaction, I could eat that fish again. I was impressed. As I pulled into the Denny’s, one of the first things that caught my eye was a drive-thru lane. I rubbed my eyes and looked again – it was still there. “We realized that drive thrus were very successful and that’s what we had to do. We called corporate for permission and we came up with how to WINTER TEXAN SPECIAL do it. Now they are flying down here to see how we do it and are going to try to get up to 50 of their FREE FRIES restaurants across the country to do it.” 1/2 Basket Denny’s has always been trendsetters in the With Park Badge food business - especially in the breakfast business. Now they continue to do the same, here in Weslaco the Valley, with business operations. 1015 S. Inter. Larry the Cable Guy.” The duo have a knack for turning oldies into “goodies again” and have recorded songs like “Wal-Mart Greeter,” “Ghost Chickens (in the Sky),” and “I Am My Own Grandpa.” Their one-liners pop in and out through the show. They share stories about themselves and others and have a bag full of impersonations. The show is a good, clean mix of comedy and music. “I brought my step-ladder with me tonight,” Bob said. “I didn’t know my real ladder.” Bob was the original comedian at Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede in Branson and has worked with Parton along with country music great Glen Campbell. He’s also known for being an animal trainer, having trained animals for movies and stage. Alta was a member of the original cast of The Promise, in Branson and was born into Gospel singing royalty. Her older brother is long-

time Gospel star Gene Reasoner and her younger brother and sister make up the contemporary Gospel group “Of Mud and Mire.” Alta transforms into, among others, Minnie Pearl, shares the stage with Kermit the Frog, is the “Ghost Chicken” and performs as an Indian tribal member, even surprising Bob with her uncanny knack for tribal harmony. Bob also transforms, singing “What a Wonderful World” as Louis Armstrong, before Alta impersonates Ann Margaret and Bob follows suit with Kermit at the end of the song. The show also takes time to give tribute to peace officers, especially those who have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. Fun and light with sprinkles of off the cuff interaction with audience members, the Redneck Revival show is just plain enjoyable. It’s clean, they’re original and memorable and they have plenty of fresh air to share.

Welcome to Texas

Welcome home. By now most of our Winter Residents have arrived and we are so glad to have you back in the big, wonderful state of Texas and the sunny Rio Grande Valley. If you drove down, then I am sure you were once again impressed by how big - and varied - Texas is. If you flew in - especially if you came from Canada - you were probably just a little shocked when you stepped off the plane. What a big difference it is between European Quebec and the tranquil palm lined roads of the Rio Grande Valley. It is quite a shock. From East to West and North to South, all these different areas have their own personalities. Yep, Texas is a Whole Other Country. The Institute of Texan Cultures in San Antonio says that Texas was settled by about 27 different ethnic groups. What an influence those

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. others in the park, and once the season started, it was fully embraced by park management. It was then that they felt the need to do something each year during the holiday season. Last year, because of COVID, they were told they would have to do something on their own instead of using park facilities or services. Again, Bargel saw something that piqued her interest. She saw a piece on the local TV news station that indicated the HCISD Clothing Closet needed winter coats for children in grade pre-K through high school. She soon learned, there was a need for other things. The Clothing Closet needed underwear, socks, shoes, and other clothing items. “I was sold on the idea that this was where we could make an impact for others less fortunate,” said Bargel. Soon, flyers were distributed throughout the park. Totes were placed at the end of her driveway for collections. She stored donated items in a spare room until distribu-

tion day. Last year, even with the lower turn out, residents donated about 600 items. This year, they delivered nearly 1,100 items that were either donated or purchased with donated monies. Items they delivered last week included underwear, socks, shoes, shirts, gloves, and other miscellaneous clothing items. “We are thrilled with the response of our very generous residents,” said Bargel about this year’s donations. “We’ve gotten comments that residents appreciate that kids within our own school district will benefit from these donations.” As for next year, she said, they’ll see if someone has a different idea to donate to or if they will continue to donate to HCISD. Bargel said, her and her co-chair, Jan Walter, both feel strongly about helping those in need, volunteering, and sharing their blessings with their community. This is just one of the ways they feel they can give back to the community they love so much.

“I believe we need to share our blessings and good fortunes of being here with those less fortunate, to make their lives a little bit better,” said Bargel. “The Harlingen community and the Valley in general have been very welcoming to us – we need to give back.” In the past, residents have donated food and personal items to Loaves and Fishes and Sow the Word. Other residents get involved with volunteering at a local thrift store, Valley Baptist Hospital, the Food Bank and packing backpacks – and maybe others that I am not aware of, said Bargel about the many things the residents do for the community. “Our quilting group has made weighted blankets and lap quilts and donated those as well. “It’s the spirit of doing something worthy and good for others,” she said. “Hel-

ping others, especially kids, always brings out our most generous spirits. “I have a heart full of emotion for projects like this – helping those whose lives may not be as blessed as mine,” continued Bargel. “I’ve been through tough times myself. Doing a project like this, donating to causes I believe in and have a heart for, gives me a full heart and a sense of purpose.”
