DIE Wolseley SAPD het die naweek op ‘n plaaslike dwelmsmous toegeslaan en byna 25 000 mandrax pille met ‘n beraamde straatwaarde van meer as R1.4 miljoen gekonfiskeer.

Dit is dié polisiestasie se grootste dwelmvonds en het deel gevorm van die SAPD se taktiese intelligensie-gedrewe operasie.

Vrydag 18 Maart het Wolseley SAPD lede toegeslaan op drie persele in Madanistraat, Pine Valley. Daar is beslag gelê op 25 plastiek sakke met nagenoeg 24 700 mandrax pille in.

Nicolette Samuels (46) wat op die perseel was ten tye van die klopjag, is gearresteer. Samuels is na bewering in ‘n verhouding met ‘n buitelander en het Maandag 20 Maart vlugtig in die Tulbagh landdroshof verskyn op klagtes van handel in dwelms of alternatiewe klagtes van die die besit van dwelms en/of die gebruik van dwelms verskyn.

Sy bly in aanhouding tot haar volgende hofverskyning. Die saak is tot Donderdag 23 Maart vir ‘n borgaansoek uitgestel.

Die polisie het al paar keer klopjagte op die dorp uitgevoer en buitelanders vir die besit van dwelms aangekeer.

In die industrieële gebied was nagenoeg 50% van die ondernemings oop. *Die Witzenberg munisipaliteit en plaaslike sakelui is dankbaar dat geen protesoptrede plaasgevind het nie en dat daar geen skade aan infrastruktuur aangerig is nie. Sakelui gaan reeds gebuk onder ‘n verslegtende ekonomie, die CV-19 impak, beurtkrag en die impak van buitelandse sakelui wat nie enige belasting hoef te betaal nie.

Vriendelike EWP-werkers kry 'n koeldrank

CERES en omliggende dorpe maak al jare gebruik van EWP kontrakwerkers om die dorpe skoon te hou. Die groep EWP werkers help personeel om probleem areas in die dorpe skoon te maak, in woonbuurtes om papiere en plastiek langs riviere op te tel en ekstra blare in die somer op te tel en in sakke te sit. Boosting the local economy and community culture

TO showcase the local talent and budding local businesses within the Witzenberg community, a two-day annual market event was held, which provided an opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate their shared culture and creativity.

SMME’s from local and outside traded with over 2 000 people, which helped to stimulate the local economy, promote local talent and social cohesion in the community.

The event was not only a success for the local community, but also a significant boost for the SMME’s who participated.

“We were extremely excited about the market being hosted again after COVID. It gave us a financial boost and increased exposure for our business,” said one of the SMME participants.

In collaboration with the Witzenberg Municipality, Perdekraal East Wind Farm provided funding for this event, which included sourcing artists to perform at the event, providing sound and stage equipment, arranging for a kiddies corner with playing activities, water slides, jumping castles and other attractions.

A total of 35 SMME’s participated in the event, with 18 being local and 17 from Cape Town and surrounding areas in the Western Cape. The market offered a range of products, from food, toys, art and craft, beach accessories, soft drinks, canned fruit, cupcakes, and face painting.

Additionally, the Perdekraal East Wind Farm made provisions for a private ambulance and first aiders for health and safety reasons and secured relevant stakeholders such as SAPS, neighbourhood watch, the local tourism office and the local security company.

The municipality also provided services for law enforcement, traffic, and volunteers and ensured electricity during load shedding.

“The event brought a sense of belonging and community development, stimulated the local economy, promoted local talent and businesses, and created a conducive environment for social cohesion in the community. The collaboration with different stakeholders increased the impact on future projects, boosted tourism growth and economic activity,” concluded Gwynne Borcherds, Economic Development Manager for Perdekraal East Wind Farm.

Man in straat vermoor

CERES polisie ondersoek ‘n moordsaak nadat ‘n man (25) die naweek in Bella Vista vermoor is.

Met die polisie se aankoms Saterdag 18 Maart op die toneel in Vygiesingel, het hulle die 25-jarige Denrico Jensel in die straat gevind.

Hy het ‘n oopwond in sy bors gehad en is op die toneel dood verklaar.

Die polisie het later ‘n 62-jarige vrou gearresteer. Sy het Woensdag 22 Maart vlugtig in die Ceres landdroshof verskyn. Die saak is tot 29 Maart uitgestel. Begrafnis

IKAMVALETHU Tunnel Farming, a local agri-enterprise based in Nduli outside Ceres, has received a much-needed financial boost to assist in restoring its infrastructure and purchase necessary equipment.

This support has also helped generate employment opportunities for fifteen locals during the restoration of the tunnels, which lasted for two months.

Following a severe storm that extensively damaged the tunnels, greenhouse and even caused some structures to collapse, Ikamvalethu is relieved to have received support to get back in operations.

With the fund provided by Perdekraal East Wind Farm, the SMME was able to fix eight tunnels by obtaining new plastics, zigzags, mistblowers, fertilizer, chemicals and even purchase fuel for the generator during load shedding.

“Through this funding, we are hoping that Ikamvalethu will be able to steer their business back on track and set their sights even higher. They’re not just looking to double or quadruple their output, but to triple it. Moreover, the community of Nduli is reaping the rewards, with more job opportunities during maintenance and production season,” explained Gwynne-Lee Borcherds, Economic Development Manager for Perdekraal East Wind Farm, which provided this funding as part of its Enterprise development initiative.

The circle of support in this community has been demonstrated through the positive impact of this funding, which has benefitted disadvantaged community members and the piggery community in Nduli.

As a result, community members received free cocktail tomatoes and third-grade tomatoes, and the piggery community received waste from Ikamvalethu’s farm for free. Looking ahead, this funding will continue to benefit the community through employment opportunities created by Ikamvalethu in the long run.

Ikamvalethu expressed gratitude for the support it received from the Perdekraal East Wind Farm and recognises the impact it has had on the community.

“The funding provided much-needed relief and enabled us to put our experience to good use. We hope to continue growing and providing opportunities for the community in the future,” concluded Andrew Aloni, Director of Ikamvalethu Tunnel Farming.

Changes to Western Cape Blood Service’s blood donation deferral periods

DURING March, the Western Cape Blood Service revised their blood donation deferral policies and made changes that may impact your next blood donation date.

“We hope that the changes will result in fewer people being turned away from donating blood”, says Dr. Caroline Hilton, Lead Medical Consultant at the Western Cape Blood Service.

A deferral period is a waiting period applied when a donor does not qualify to donate within the specified time due to various reasons, including certain activities or illnesses.

Some of the policy changes mentioned above include reducing the deferral periods after dental procedures and

stricter deferrals were put in place following strokes or transient ischaemic attacks (‘mini strokes’).

“With the new changes put in place, we want to reassure the public that the safety of both the patient and donor will always remain our utmost priority” says Dr Hilton.

From now on, insulin-dependent diabetic blood donors can donate blood, provided their blood sugar levels are well controlled and they do not have any known diabetic complications. In addition, people with pacemakers can also donate blood.

However, a confirmation letter is needed from their doctor stating that they are asymptomatic and the device was inserted more than 6 months before the day of donation.

People using intravenous recreational drugs were previously permanently deferred. Due to improved confidence in the testing methodologies used to detect specific viral infections in blood donations, they can now donate after a 3 month deferral. In addition, donors who have undergone a cardiac bypass or stent will be permitted to donate 6 months after the procedure without the previous requirement of a letter from their doctor, provided that they are asymptomatic.

Donors who underwent cosmetic procedures such as Botox, Micro-needling, and laser therapy can now donate immediately after these procedures, provided the treatment was performed by a registered practitioner using disposable needles.

“These changes were carefully reviewed and compared to national and international policies, and we hope it will bolster our blood stocks,” says Dr Hilton.

The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) is appealing to all donors to donate blood as blood stocks are critically low. “We always aim to have a blood stock level of 5 days. Currently, there is a critical shortage in the O-negative blood group, with only a 2 day supply left. The A-positive blood stock is also declining as we only have a 3 day supply left”, says Marike Gevers, Public Relations Manager at WCBS.

The need for blood and blood products increases annually, and to meet the province’s demand, WCBS need to ensure that collection targets are met. Each day the blood service needs to collect 700 units of blood. “Ideally, we want 1 - 2% of the Western Cape’s population to become active blood donors. An active blood donor is classified as someone who donates blood once a year, even though you can donate 6 times a year. At the moment, only 0.92% of the population are active blood donors, yet 75% of the population will still require blood or blood products in their lifetime,” says Gevers. If you’re between ages of 16 and 75, weigh 50kg or more, are in good general health, and lead a safe sexual lifestyle, you should be able to donate. Blood donation only takes 30 minutes of your time and you can donate blood every 56 days. It is never too late to donate blood. Gevers also encourage donors that haven’t donated blood in a while to find their closest blood donation clinic and to continue their lifesaving journey. SANBS blood stock levels improving but still under pressure

BLOOD stocks are slowly increasing but remain lower than the five days cover required.

Since the beginning of the year, the demand for blood has been consistently higher than the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) collections especially for blood groups O and B.

“We would like to thank our donors for increased collections, but we are not in the safe zone yet. We urge everyone including active donors, lapsed donors and potential donors to continue donating consistently to ensure ongoing adequate national stocks,” says Thandi Mosupye, SANBS Senior Manager: Marketing, Communication and Brand.

To adequately cater for the country’s blood requirements, an allocation of 3 500 units of blood is needed daily to serve the needs of hospitals and clinical requirements.

Five days cover on average is the minimum safe supply needed in the blood bank. Currently SANBS is collecting enough blood supply for three days which is an improvement from 2.7 days but remains under the national requirement of 5 days.SANBS has 83 blood banks supporting close to 500 transfusing facilities.

Vaccinate your child against measles before 31 March

THE Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness reminds parents, guardians, and caregivers that they have until 31 March 2023 to vaccinate their children against measles, as part of the national campaign.

This will contribute to increased protection against and contribute to the elimination of measles. An outbreak has now been declared in all the provinces in South Africa, except for the Eastern Cape.

The current laboratory confirmed measles cases in the Western Cape stands at 10, which have all been reported in the Cape Town metropolitan district.

Measles surveillance has been intensified across the province and healthcare workers have been urged to be on alert to detect, investigate and manage all suspected or confirmed measles cases appropriately. Blood samples are routinely collected from suspected measles cases which meet the case definition of a rash, fever and one of the ‘Cs’ (cough, coryza, and conjunctivitis).

STEINTHAL atlete het onlangs goed presteer tydens die WesKaap atletiekkampioenskappe in die Dal Josafat stadion.
