Following the challenging circumstances of 2020, it was important for us as councils to offer an opportunity for our community to be able to enjoy entertainment, connect with each other and be exposed to new experiences. It was important for such a significant event to be able to deliver, whatever the pandemic might throw at us. And as such, this year’s festival looks very different to the inaugural event held last year, just days before COVID-19 hit home. So we encourage you to get out where you can, to settle in with family and friends and connect online but, most importantly, be ready to be creative, connected and curious and immerse yourself in everything this year’s Upstream festival has on offer. And remember to continue to support the wonderful arts and culture sector we have right here on the Border and the amazing opportunities and experiences they offer all-year round.

Experimenta Make Sense: International Triennial of Media Art Albury LibraryMuseum Monday, Wednesday, Thursday 10am to 7pm Tuesday and Friday 10am to 5pm Saturday 10am to 4pm / Sunday 12pm to 4pm Until Sunday, May 16 Experimenta Make Sense: International Triennial of Media Art expresses the disconcerting and delightful world of the digital age. Both playful and challenging, each artwork asks audiences to immerse their senses into a ”thinking”, ”feeling” and ”doing” contemplation of what it is to be human in the digital age of technological acceleration. Biologist E.O. Wilson said: “The real problem of humanity is the following: We have Paleolithic emotions, medieval institutions, and god-like technology.” Curated by Jonathan Parsons and Lubi Thomas, Experimenta Make Sense features more than 20 international and Australian artists engaging with this conundrum.

Year 12 Art Show
Notes from the Field: Bogong Centre for Sound Culture
Olive Odewahn: A Country Life
Enjoy an insight into the creativity, innovation and unique perspectives of young people from the Murray region in the Year 12 Art Show. This exhibition brings together the strongest works from the graduating class of 2020 from around the region, shortlisted by a panel of local curators. It is an opportunity to celebrate the quality of works that are being produced at local schools, the diversity of stories and a chance to reflect upon the valuable role artistic practice plays in the development of self-identity.
Notes from the Field presents work from the 10-year history of the Bogong Centre for Sound Culture (B-CSC), an artist residency and forum for experimental practices, situated in the foothills of Victoria’s Alpine National Park.
A Country Life presents a collection of photographs taken between the late 1920s and mid-1960s which form a record of one woman’s experience as a pioneering female photographer. Olive Odewahn’s work is an example of mid-20th century vernacular photography in rural Australia. It is an exhibition of people and places, posed portraits and candid moments, community events, recreation and family. The artist’s shadow makes occasional appearances, as do all manner of farm animals, alongside crowds in Wagga expecting the Queen and the construction of the Hume Dam in the 1930s. The exhibition is curated by artist and photographer Dr Catherine Rogers, with the assistance of Valerie Odewahn.
Notes from the Field gathers works by recent B-CSC residents who travelled from across Australia and from around the world. The exhibition presents a series of sound-based and visual artworks that have been made in, and in response to, the Bogong landscape.

Ode to the Mighty Murray Sculpture artwork by Tobias Bennett Metal Sculptor Noreuil Park Albury
The Murray Cod is a fish of great significance. It is the largest exclusively freshwater fish in Australia residing in the largest river system in the land. For millions of years, Murray Cod have dominated the waters of the MurrayDarling basin. Fossils have been found from 26 million years ago and many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander creation stories describe a giant Murray Cod which originally carved the Murray River in a time before time. Since European settlement, wild populations of Murray Cod have declined significantly to now being listed as endangered, largely due to commercial exploitation and human intervention with the river.
THE ARTIST Tobias Bennett is based in Leeton, NSW. Tobias has been sculpting in steel since 2009 and now creates sculptures for private and public display that explore and sometimes combine both figurative and abstract forms. Drawing much of his inspiration from the natural environment and human folklore, Tobias greatly enjoys the challenge of repurposing and reshaping steel into new forms, taking a raw material and transforming it into an engaging piece of artwork that excites the imagination of the viewer.

Little Egret Mural artwork by Chris Henderson - SIRHC Rear wall of Kathmandu store (529 Dean St) City Walk Volt Lane Albury
Chris Henderson - SIRHC Albury is surrounded by beautiful countryside and wildlife and this mural is a dedication to all the people who have cared for the land for thousands of years and continue to do so. From First Nations Wiradjuri people who cared for the land pre- and post-colonisation and the farmer of today who works in regeneration and landcare, this mural is for the land and its carers. THE ARTIST Chris Henderson aka SIRHC (Chris spelt backwards) grew up in Eldorado in North East Victoria where he developed
his deep love and passion for wildlife. SIRHC attended a local high school then on to TAFE to study graphic design in Wangaratta. After that he moved to Melbourne to kickstart his art career. In Melbourne he was able to experiment and develop his style into something totally unique. His style is very Australian but exciting, bright and bold and holds its own amid the Australian emerging contemporary art scene. SIRHC’s deep fascination for Australian wildlife and the weird shapes created in the human form has contributed greatly to his process and inspiration. 11

Mural artwork by Kirrily Anderson Townsend Vet Clinic 383 Townsend St Albury
Mountain Pygmy-possum There are fewer than 2000 critically endangered Mountain Pygmy-possums left in the wild with three populations of Mountain Pygmy-possums living in the alpine and subalpine rocks of our neighbouring Alpine regions - Bogong High Plains and Mt Buller in Victoria and Mt Kosciusko in NSW. An emerging threat is the reduction in the possum’s key food source over spring, the Bogong Moth. Bogong Moths normally migrate from Queensland, NSW and western Victoria towards Mountain Pygmypossum habitats. But for the past two years they haven’t arrived. There are several possible reasons. As well as drought and pesticide use, bright lights from towns and cities are thought to lure and trap the moths along their migration route. This mural is to highlight their stories and inform people of their plight.
Kirrily Anderson THE ARTIST Award-winning artist Kirrily Anderson makes one-of-a-kind art with a nostalgic bent. Influenced by the intricacies of the natural environment, her work embraces tiny details that call the viewer to slow and see the often unseen. From a graphic design background to visual art, street art and workshops for children, with turns in commercial illustration, curation and event management thrown in, Kirrily has evolved into a multidisciplinary artist whose work aims to connect people, places and memories and whose focus is now a happy blend of murals, visual art and creative workshops. 12

Mural artwork by Kade Sarte Substation between 312 and 317 Wagga Rd Lavington
Bird Box Beginnings The title of this mural came from an idea when the artist first visited the location and was inspired by the local birdlife jumping and flying around in the greenery of the area. Although on a busy main street, the back of the building and around the sides there is very little foot traffic and the wildlife is living happily. The building is shaped like a box so the name was derived from that - the ideas went hand in hand.
THE ARTIST Kade is a Lavington lad who has spent most of his life in the area and specialises in large-scale murals with brush and spray can. Although he has been painting on and off for 12 years, his interest developed seriously in 2017 when he moved back to Albury from Queensland. Work began to grow around town and eventually this progressed into travelling around the broader region. Now Kade spends his time working for himself, creating art throughout the area; whether it be a large commissions or murals on children’s bedroom walls, he paints it all.

Home, Sweet, Butterfly Mural artwork by Kristina Greenwood Wilson St car park entrance between 519 and 521 Wilson St Albury
This mural is a homage to the beautiful butterflies that live in our region with their host plants. Its purpose is to invite curiosity and aid the public in butterfly identification. As well, it encourages the incorporation of sustainable plants in our gardens, to support and invite these delicate but vibrant pollinator friends. THE ARTIST Kristina Greenwood is an Albury-based artist, with a background in both fine art and illustration. A love for plants, patterns in nature and the human experience blend together to form her surreal, vivid, explorations of the inner world. She conveys this complex inner landscape by combining mixed media with fluorescent pigments, to illustrate work which is vibrant and imaginative.

Mural artwork by Tamara Murray Wagirra Trail Padman Park between Bungambrawatha Creek and Kremur St Boat Ramp near the bat colony
There’s more to see Upstream Albury-Wodonga has far more to see beyond the mighty Murray River. A place rich in history, culture, arts and nature. A place where people come together - to meet, to holiday, to celebrate the strong community spirit that exists across the two cities. A place where First Nations peoples and their culture and connection to country is respected and celebrated.
Tamara Murray
THE ARTIST Tamara May Murray is a proud member of the Barkindtji and Muraroah tribe on her mother’s side, the Yorta Yorta and Dhudaroah tribes on her father’s side. She grew up on the Namatjira mission in the small country town of Coomealla. For Tamara, her art is not simply paint on a canvas. It’s a story, it’s a place, it’s someone she has met along the way that has inspired her. It’s a deep connection to the land and her culture. It is a story that has been passed down. 16

Birds of West Albury Wetlands A cutout photographic paste–up installation by Ian Sutherland Volt and Amp Lanes Albury
A series of cutout photographic paste–ups of local birds will form a large–scale mural. With a mix of flying and groundlevel imagery, there will be plenty of action for tall and small to capture a selfie with a feathered friend. This work will be bright and colourful, playful and joyous and will give locals a chance to view a wide array of local birdlife, which they can go on to spot for themselves on future walks from Wonga to the weir.
THE ARTIST Ian Sutherland has been a keen birdwatcher and naturalist since he was knee-high to a brolga. One of his earliest memories is of turning over rocks to look for small and interesting critters in the back paddock and watching wedge-tailed eagles circling overhead at his grandparents’ home in Mia Mia in central Victoria. His photographs have been published widely in Flying Fruit Fly Circus, HotHouse Theatre and other organisations’ promotional material as well as in the Fairfax press and other publications. Ian has also worked as a science and maths teacher, revegetation worker, disability employment support worker, as cafe owner and shark measurer. 17

Seven Cases THE ARTIST Sculpture artwork by Yvonne George Bonegilla rail siding Murray Valley Hwy Bonegilla Adjacent to the High Country Rail Trail
Seven Cases pays respect to the more than 300,000 migrants who passed through the doors of the Bonegilla Migrant Reception and Training Centre between 1947 and 1971.
Yvonne spent her formative years on a New Zealand sheep farm and in a small coastal town, where she became an avid collector of natural forms. From the drying seedpods found in creek beds to the eroded, polished, and or skeletal forms washed up along the rugged west coast - the land and sea soon cluttered her room and became the inspiration behind her creative expression. Undertaking a Bachelor of Ceramics in Bendigo, she began producing figurative forms which is where her sculpting career began. A few years after graduating - her work, methods and materials developed and expanded from ceramics to using steel, copper, bronze, aluminum, cement, stone and more recently resin. Strengthened by 30 years’ experience as a fulltime professional artist and sculptor, Yvonne works out of her gallery located at Bendigo Pottery in Epsom. As organic forms continue to inspire her works, she says her sculptures and art will always be changing and developing.

Mural artwork by Dr Treahna Hamm 11 Elgin Boulevard Wodonga
Seasons of Stories The mural encompasses stories based on the celebration of “place” along the Murray River through the inspiration of the Upstream festival. Incorporating Indigenous perspectives of life and culture, the mural also highlights the local landscape - its shapes, meandering journey lines and special sites in which Wodonga is acknowledged as a great meeting place of cultures, identities, histories and life. The river which is a strong life force within itself, radiates life on many levels creating a relaxed environment for recreation conducive to the celebration of people and place.
THE ARTIST Dr Treahna Hamm has been a practising artist nationally and internationally for more than 30 years and holds a Doctorate of Philosophy (School of Education) at RMIT University. Her artworks are composed with multilayers of stories garnered from her Yorta Yorta experiences of living by the Murray River in Northern Victoria and southern NSW through contemporary practices including printmaking, painting, photography, public art, sculpture, possum skin cloaks, murals and highly individual fibre weaving. She works with abstract forms as well as traditional designs from her Indigenous heritage.
The title relates to the many experiences, stories, activities of life which culminate in the Upstream festival in an ever-growing urban environment loved by many. 20
