As I have in past years, I am pleased again this year to write an introduction to the 2018 Wyoming Outdoors publication. This is the go-to planning guide for an outing in Wyoming. It offers a wealth of information on hunting, fishing and all kinds of summer and winter pursuits in our great state. If you've been on a Wyoming adventure before and used this guide, you know its value. If you are planning your first trip, with this publication in hand, you have all you need. I was born and raised in Jackson, Wyoming. I have been an outdoor enthusiast from childhood on. I climbed the Grand in high school, am an avid snowmobiler and skier, and hunt and fish every chance I get. I enjoy participating in these activities, as well as others, in Wyoming because frankly the outdoor opportunities here are unparalleled. Our rivers, mountain ranges, and national and state parks and forests provide many things – wildlife, scenic beauty, and something elusive in our busy world -solitude. Our 11,000 farms and ranches provide open spaces and distinctive character to the land. We have bountiful game both big and small. The fifth season in the year to us is hunting season. The Wyoming Outfitters & Guides Association and its members bring this 2018 edition of Wyoming Outdoors to you. These are experienced professionals who know Wyoming inside and out. They can help you put together a great trip to the Cowboy State. Hoping you will visit us soon and best regards, Sincerely, Matthew H. Mead, Governor

Whether you are looking for a premier hunting experience, a family pack trip vacation or a back country fishing excursion, these professionals can offer you a World Class, Memorable, Outdoor Experience. The members of WYOGA spend countless hours, effort and dollars to stay on the forefront of issues that affect all sportsmen. They are committed to protecting our hunting, fishing and other outdoor interests throughout the state. Over the years, WYOGA has fought legislatively to ensure resident and non-resident sportsmen continue to have the proper allocation of licenses to pursue big game and trophy game animals. The members also spend countless hours and resources on the issues that concern sportsmen and outdoor enthusiasts, such as delisting of the grizzly bear, wolf and predator control, and access to public lands. WYOGA has a great working relationship with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. The mutual understanding of proper management and issues that affect both the wildlife and their habitat ensures future generations will enjoy the opportunities that sportsmen experience today.

WHDF & WYOGA BEGINNING THIS YEAR (2018), the Wyoming Hunter Defense Fund will no longer be managed as a separate organization. The WHDF will be managed under the WYOGA umbrella. This move will provide a more efficient tax structure for WYOGA. In turn, this will allow WYOGA to make the best use of funding to provide members with a continued political presence and influence. If you would like to continue to support the WHDF through WYOGA please make your contributions payable to: WYOGA for WHDF mail to: P.O. Box 2650, Casper, WY 82602 Thank you in advance for your continued support!

WILDLIFE MIGRATIONS IN WYO
Wildlife Migrations IN Wyoming Doug Brimeyer Deputy Chief Wildlife Wyoming Game and Fish Department
Elk migration in the Gros Ventre drainage east of Jackson, Wyoming.
WYOMING IS HOME to some of the longest big game migrations in the lower 48 and these animal movements are among the most spectacular and awe-inspiring of any natural phenomena. Across the state, more than 90 percent of mule deer, elk, pronghorn, moose, bighorn sheep, mountain goat, bison and white-tailed deer are migratory. One visit to Wyoming’s high country in the middle of winter, and it’s easy to see that with no vegetation exposed through the deep snow, animals would die if they didn’t leave. Fact is -- Migrations bolster animal fitness and migratory individuals usually outnumber resident populations. Migratory animals are able to move to new habitats, reduce their risk of attacks by predators and avoid food shortages by seeking highquality forage as they migrate. Some seasonal movements can take months as animals stop at key foraging sites to replenish expended energy and rest before continuing on. From highelevation summer ranges in western Wyoming to the low-elevation winter ranges in the southern reaches of the state, mule deer may take up to two months in the fall and another two months in the spring to make their seasonal movements. This means for nearly a third of a year they are trudging along in search of nutritious
12
forage. This adaptive strategy has been repeated annually for generations and is passed on from mother to young. While most Wyoming big game migrate, some do not. Historically, resident populations faced a disadvantage by staying on the same range the entire year and using up resources. However, as predator populations have grown and shifted around, the benefits of staying in one place are increasing. Now migratory big game contend with up to four times the number of grizzly bears and wolves as resident herds that stay near developed areas. Wyoming wildlife managers and researchers have observed reduced survival rates, lower numbers of young and shifts in distribution of migratory elk as herds try to avoid predators. At the same time resident elk herds that reside in areas where predators are controlled and foraging habitats are fertilized and irrigated, have increased in size. There has always been interest in big game movement patterns in Wyoming. Early indigenous people followed game migrations and, in the early 1900s, Wyoming residents attempted to monitor and map annual elk movements from Yellowstone National Park. In the 1930s the Wyoming Game and Fish Department began mapping

elk routes while conducting aerial surveys. By 1945 the department started track surveys along U.S. Highway 26-287 east of Moran Junction as elk migrated toward the National Elk Refuge. Today detailed movement patterns of wildlife are mapped through the use of GPS radio collars. In the late 1990s a University of Wyoming researcher named Hall Sawyer mapped the 100-mile path of the pronghorn in western Wyoming. Soon after, others began collaring elk from herds in Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks and animals from adjacent herds of mule deer, bighorn sheep, moose, bison and mountain goat. One of the more notable mule deer movements was From left to right, migration corridors (blue) and stopover areas (red) in the Sublette, Baggs and Platte Valley mule deer herds from 290 radio-collared mule deer. documented as researchers began monitoring deer east of Rock Springs near Interstate 80. Radio-collared deer traveled 150 miles north to the Hoback area and one collared animal covered 255 miles as it made its way to summer ranges in eastern Idaho. With the ability to precisely map wildlife movements the conservation of migration corridors in Wyoming suddenly started to receive a lot of attention. Game and Fish began working on policies in 2015 and the Commission adopted Wyoming’s Corridor Strategy in early 2016. The strategy builds on a 30-year-old process for identifying important big game seasonal ranges. Corridor designation requires that managers evaluate GPS movement data collected over several years to Wyoming’s expansive habitats are home to some of the most impressive big game migrations in the lower 48, including 150-mile mule deer corridors and elk routes where thousands of animals pour through narrow identify areas where more than one mountain passes. marked animal made a seasonal trek Wyoming Department of Transportation, landowners, between summer and winter range. 2018 HUNTER OF THE YEAR JERRY ARENDS
I WAS BORN DECEMBER, 1944 on a small farm 15 miles NW of Grand Rapids, Michigan. When I was three years old my parents bought a 2000 acre farm near Grant. I have lived in the grant area for the last 70 years. I learned at a young age to work long and hard. After graduating from high school in 1962, I worked with my parents on a small farm implement business, my dad purchased in 1960. He used it to support his farming which had grown to over 3,000 acres. I took over management in 1965, incorporated the business in 1967 and finally started buying him out in 1968. The business was growing fast. I then bought property and built a new dealership and after 30 years of a very successful run, I sold out in December of 1998.

I met my wife Jane and we married January 22, 1971. We have three daughters and two sons. We have 11 grandchildren from 5-16 years old. We bought and sold several farms which was very profitable. We also kept three farms that we rent out. We live on a 40 acre hobby farm that we moved into on July 4, 1971. We raised horses and longhorn cattle. I enjoyed breaking horses to ride and drive. My hobbies are horses, hunting, and snowmobiling. I started hunting pheasant and white tail deer when I was 12. My first elk hunt was 1978. I’ve hunted in Montana, Idaho, Alberta Canada and Afton, Wyoming. My first hunt with Budd Betts, Absaroka Ranch was in 1984. This was also my first elk kill. I hunted with his outfit about 25 times thru 2015 for a total of 17 elk. We grew a great
friendship thru the years. Now my son and three son-in-laws have hunted several years with Budd’s outfit. I will be back out November, 2018 for a cow hunt. Jane and I travel in the summer with our R.V. When we are not traveling we spend a lot of time camped on a 235 acre farm we have on the Muskegon River, which has 1.6 miles of river front. Our kids and grandkids love to be there fishing, kayaking and riding ATV’s. I cannot thank Budd enough for a lot of great hunts and friendship over the years. I thank Budd for nominating me for this award with WYOGA. Thank you all very much. Jane and I are looking forward to seeing you all in Casper on April 6, 2018. Sincerely, Jerry Arends

BIG GAME HUNTING
Unraveling the Preference Points Mystery By Jim Schell, Rough Country Outfitters & Guides
“WHAT THE HECK DO YOU MEAN, I didn’t draw my dang Wyoming elk license again!!!” I’m sure most of us have either said, or at least heard this very statement, quickly followed by a few other choice words of disappointment! So, if you are like many Non-Resident Sportsmen, you have at least a few questions surrounding Wyoming’s Big Game Preference Points System! In an effort to help folks better understand how the Preference Points System works, a few facts, figures, opinions and application strategies will be presented. Understanding the dynamics of the WGFD Big Game License Drawing, may be of real benefit to you in successfully drawing that coveted Antelope, Deer, Elk, Bighorn Sheep or Shiras Moose license, when, where and how you wish to hunt them in future years! WGFD first introduced Preference Points for Resident and Non-Resident Bighorn Sheep and Shiras Moose in 1995. Preference Points for Non-Resident Elk, Deer and Antelope began in 2006. At this time, Preference Points are not available to Wyoming Resident hunters for these species. Jennifer Doering, WGFD License Section Manager, states several key points they communicate to their applicant customers are “Preference Points are only considered for an applicants first choice, for full price license applications, and she reminds us that Preference Points must be purchased at least every two years, or they will be forfeited and lost after the second year of not purchasing your points.” Wyoming license draws are allocated at 75% for preference point holders, and 25% for all applicants, providing all applicants an opportunity to draw a license. For a complete run-down on Preference Point totals and drawing odds for each species, check out the WGFD web-site at wgfd.wyo.gov. Brian Nesvik, WGFD Chief Game Warden, commented that “Preference Points were originally intended to provide hunters with predictability and reasonable assurance that over time, their chances of drawing high demand areas would increase. Specifically for Non-Resident, they were intended to help hunters predict how often they would draw a tag for their favorite areas. It appears now, that as the number of Preference Point holders and the maximum number of preference points available has increased, and the level of predictability has decreased, at least for some hunt areas. This conflict with the original intent is definitely something we have been hearing about from Sportsmen.” Scott Talbott, WGFD Director, suggests that “hunters should determine what type of hunt they would prefer, IE; private land, public land, back country, front country, outfitted, non-outfitted, 4X4 or horseback, etc; prior to applying for a license. By reviewing the WGFD web-site Demand Index, an applicant can determine the hunt area they may be successful in drawing a “Regular or Special” license for, based on their personal interests and number of Preference Points they have accumulated at the time of application.
20
So, inquiring minds want to know, why has the Preference Points System became so bogged down? Why have so many sportsmen accumulated so many points? Why is “Point Creep” happening? The answers to these tough questions may be found in a variety of factual data, and personal opinions by many, who have studied the dynamics of, and participated in the Preference Points Systems since its inception. One reliable theory, is that during the previous presidential administration’s depressed economy and uncertain times, many conservative sportsmen chose to just stay home, save their money, and stack up another preference point for the future! And stack em’ up they have, to the tune of 66, 574 NR Antelope point holders, 65,293 NR Deer point holders, and a whopping 77,484 NR Elk point holders!!! Of course, just a percentage of these Preference Point holders actually applied for licenses in 2018. And as the economy continues to improve, consumer confidence, spending and desire to travel has greatly increased, as well as the the number or NR license applications for all of Wyoming’s big game species! However, there is a silver lining in this massive cloud of NR Preference Points! With Wyoming’s generous Non-Resident quota of 16% for Elk, 20% for Antelope Deer and Shiras Moose, and 25% for Bighorn Sheep, many applicants are rolling through the points system each year, creating a virtual “light at the end of the tunnel” for future applicants! In Particular, Wyoming’s Elk population has never been higher, quality has never been better, and we are truly living in “the good old days” for quality elk hunting! In fact, Wyoming’s general permit elk hunting opportunities rival our neighboring states special permit units, and required only three Preference Points to guarantee a license was drawn in 2018! A common misconception among applicants is; the more Preference Points it takes to draw a license, the better the hunting must be! This is not the necessarily the case, as many factors influence the number of Preference Points required to draw a particular limited quota license, IE; local demographics, how many tags are issued per area, is it predominantly private land with limited access, or easily accessed public land or remote back-country wilderness. The dedicated professionals of the Wyoming Outfitters and Guides Association, strongly encourage all sportsmen and women, planning to hunt in Wyoming in the next several years to decide when, where and what type of hunting experience you are looking for. Then, do your research within WYOGA’S statewide variety of topnotch, professional outfitters and guides, offering everything from soup-to-nuts hunting opportunities that will best suit your needs, wants, dreams and desires! In order to guarantee your hunt reservation with one of Wyoming’s top quality, WYOGA member outfitters, we suggest that you book your dates early, even several years in advance ,while you are accumulating the Preference Points necessary to guarantee your license is drawn! Thanks, and good luck applicants!

WYOGA HUNTING STORY CONTEST WINNER
BIG GAME HUNTING
“BEAR STORY” TO HUNT BEARS or not to hunt bears? That’s a question I’ve pondered for many years. I’ve backpacked and hunted the Olympic and Cascade Mountain ranges in my home state of Washington since I was a Boy Scout. After a handful of encounters in some very majestic places, bears took on a special, almost sacred significance to me. For many years I chosen to not actively pursue bears and focused my efforts on deer, elk and turkeys. Then, during a 2015 spring backpacking trip in Washington’s Blue Mountains, I had a stare down with a large blond boar that got my blood pumping and activated an innate desire that had been lying dormant for all these years. Spring bear hunting in my home state is a limited quota hunt that can take years to draw. I knew Robb Wiley of NonTypical Outfitters had a long history of successful bear hunts. I hunted Antelope with Robb in 2014 and was very impressed with his professionalism, character and commitment to giving his hunters the best experience possible. So when I decided to pursue bears there was no question that NTO was my preferred choice. The planning for this hunt started in January 2017 when Robb and I discussed a bear he'd captured on trail camera in a remote drainage in the Bridger-Teton national forest. Some big bears had been taken from this area before so he knew there was good potential. Robb shared with me the type of hunt that I should expect and to prepare myself for “high adventure”. Four months later I meet up with Robb. We loaded up our gear and made the drive to camp. Camp was located alongside a creek in a site not far from where mountain men used to hold rendezvous to trade their fur pelts. I could picture in my mind what their camps might have looked like and felt honored to be sharing the same ground that had been used by these men and the native peoples long before them. After meeting the guides, Dylan and Nick, I checked gear for the next day’s hunt and confirmed zero on the rifle. That evening we enjoyed the sounds of the creek while sitting fireside and discussing plans for the morning. The first day of the hunt, Dylan and I rode our horses to a high vantage point and spent the day behind optics. It was a great day with lots of deer and elk sightings but no bears. Riding back to camp that night was my first experience riding a horse in utter darkness. I was uneasy at first, but quickly grew to trust Clyde, my surefooted mountain horse. Riding across the rushing creek waters toward the glow of a wall tent was spectacular. Day 2, we rode to a different vantage point and spent a long, wet day behind the glass. We got caught by a torrential downpour on an exposed ridge and dodged thunder and lightning while we led the horses to lower ground (this was part of the high adventure Robb spoke of). That evening we watched a good boar Dylan estimated to be about 6' long feed 300 yards away. Now a 6' boar is no slouch but we knew bigger bruins roam this country. I spent several minutes going back and forth whether to take a shot – earning the bear the nickname “HemHaw”. It was difficult to pass this bear up but it was only day 2 of the hunt. I was second guessing myself the entire ride back to camp and hoped I wouldn't regret my decision. The next few days involved more riding to vantage points and glassing, glassing and more glassing. The moon phase was perfect and we were betting on catching a bear "cruising" mid-day setting up a spot and stalk opportunity. By this point in the hunt we had seen two sows, one with twin cubs (cute little buggers) and, of course Ol’ “Hem-Haw”. Nothing was moving mid-day, perhaps because of the warm weather. Regardless, we were getting a little discouraged and the mental toughness game was setting in. The beautiful mountains, abundant deer and elk sightings and Dylan making afternoon cups of coffee helped keep me going. On the ride back to camp that night the stars were absolutely amazing. I hummed some Chris LeDoux songs from the saddle while watching the northern lights ripple across the horizon. I was in my kind of church. Robb had steel targets set out at 400, 500 and 700 yards near camp. Each morning we spent time sending a few rounds downrange. I like having confidence in my gear and validating that the system is dialed in. It’s one thing to confirm a rifle’s zero after a long road trip, but it takes confidence to a whole other level when you can shoot at distance throughout a hunt. Monday night we made a fireside decision to relocate the next morning to a different drainage. It was a more difficult to access area that would require several creek crossings with

waters swollen from rapidly melting snow pack, then a climb on foot up a steep ridge tangled with snow drifts and blowdown. Tuesday evening found Dylan and I sitting on the spine of a ridge looking across a deep canyon toward a series of intersecting finger ridges. This was our first time into this area so, to be honest, I wasn't terribly optimistic. We spent several hours glassing, waiting for the magical last light moments when bears often like to appear. At exactly 8:01 PM I was scanning the far side ridge passing from right to left when my glass fell upon a very large bear bathed in the light of the setting sun. After spending nearly 40 hours behind optics this week, it was an absolutely unbelievable moment to gaze upon this animal. I whispered to Dylan..."there's a bear...and he's huge... that's him". I gave a description on where to spot the bear and he started scanning. Next thing I hear is "yes sir that’s him… that our super cruiser...” The next 30 minutes were a test of patience and self-control. The bear was moving down the ridge and would ultimately shave off a lot of yardage so we let him come. I had to convince myself I was looking at a bear and not a gorilla - he looked like a dump truck waddling downhill. I spent this time in prayer asking for the Lord’s guiding hand. Dylan kept me calm by saying “this is what we came here for...this is what we've worked hard for all week...we've been taking these shots on steel all week.” This really helped me to focus. By this time I'd established a solid shooting position and had the bear in the scope. We were sitting on a slight downhill so I had built up a solid position using my pack, puffy coat in a stuff sack, and shooting sticks. This is a position that Robb taught me earlier in the week and one I practiced each day. This position makes a very solid field rest and allows for a natural point of aim. The bear stopped at a range of 520 yards. The kestrel was calling for 7.4 MOA up. Dylan kept repeating to me...”break down the shoulders”. These big bears are tough customers and breaking down the shoulders is the best way to anchor them. I went through my mental checklist; elevation and windage dialed, parallax adjusted, focus on the reticle, gentle trigger press, and follow through on the trigger. I told Dylan that I was on the bear and ready for the shot. I recall him saying "as soon as he turns broadside...point of the shoulder". I could see him plug his ears through my peripheral vision. I took a couple deep breaths and started my trigger press. The break felt clean and the 300WSM sent the 200 grain Hornady ELD-X on its way at 2900 fps. Even with a muzzle break I was not quite able spot the shot, but as I recovered from the recoil I could tell the bear had reacted. It looked like he hunched slightly and then quickly started to move. I chambered another round but was unable to get back on the bear before he was gone behind some trees. After the shot, we listened intently for crashing or death moans but the distance and the creek sound in the drainage below made it impossible to hear. The next few minutes we were finally able to mentally relax, take stock of what happened and recount events. We were both still in disbelief that this magnificent bear had appeared and that we just took a shot at such a spectacular animal. I gave thanks to God and had faith that the shot was true. We packed up our gear and started descending down the ridge to where the horses were tied. It's now dark and we reach the horses by headlamp. We start riding, cross the creek and try to find our way up the other side. We were both excited to confirm a hit and recover this bear. Things got a little western as we pushed the horses
up the ridge, around blowdown and over some slopes that were best not tacked in the dark. We stopped, got ourselves calmed down, then dismounted and led the horses to a safe point where we tied them then climbed the rest of the way on foot. There was no point in getting a horse hurt or one of us taking a fall…more of the as promised “high adventure”. We climbed about 500 feet on foot to where we last saw the bear. With headlamps we did our best to pinpoint the exact location where the bear was standing. We searched for blood via headlamp being careful not to disturb the area and damage sign. We picked up tracks but no blood. We stayed on the trail as it entered snow on the backside of the ridge but found no blood in the snow. How can that be I'm thinking? We followed these tracks in the snow for approximately 50 yards and decided that pressing further in the dark at a potentially wounded bear was a bad idea. We decided to come back in the morning to resume the search in daylight. It was a long, quiet and solemn descent back down the mountain and ride to camp. Doubt had crept in and without finding any blood in the snow I was concerned that I had blown this opportunity. The next morning we talk with Robb on the phone, explain events and reported that based upon no evidence of a hit we concluded it was a “clean miss”. Robb told me that bears are tough and can go a long ways, even with a good hit (thus the need to break down the shoulders), and that all that hair absorbs blood like a sponge. Then Robb said, “Ron I’ve been watching you shoot all week, there is no way you missed that bear…. I’m going to meet you guys at the trailhead and we’re going to get your bear”. After some breakfast, we saddle the horses and a pack mule and make our way back up the mountain. In the daylight, we are able to find a much easier path and ride the horses without danger. We tie the animals up about 100 yards from the top and resume our search. We start looking for hair and blood at the location of the shot but none was to be found. We started looking for a bullet crater in the event I had missed. Robb instructed us to fan out and start moving down the last known travel route of the bear. After about 40 yards of careful tracking I hear Nick shout out "Hey guys I've got a bear over here...you better get over here!!!” Now my mind interpreted this as I've got a live bear over here so with the rifle in the high ready I hustled in his direction repeating "Where? Where?". I now caught sight of Nick and can tell he's looking at the base of a nearby tree surrounded by deep snow. As I approached I could see the mound of a bear at the base of the tree. We carefully approached and with Dylan and Robb now beside me my doubt was replaced with the surreal reality of success. Robb sidled up beside me and said…”Clean miss, huh?” We celebrated and gave thanks to the Lord for helping us find this bear. It was all we could do to pull him out from under the tree and up onto the hill. The shot had impacted in the right shoulder, took out the lungs and exited just aft of the ribs. The bear died quickly. We had been within 20 yards of him last night but had walked around him in the dark. It was just the Lord’s way of testing my patience and allowing us all to be present together when we found the bear. After laying eyes and hands on the bear, Robb made it clear to me the trophy quality of this animal. It didn’t take much discussion to convince me that a life-size body mount is the only way to honor this creature. The hide when stretched from nose to tail measured 7'4" and the skull measured right at 20". He is a bruiser with one ear split clean in half and the left upper incisor tooth pointing forward at about 45 degrees from an old injury. After taking pictures we packed meat and hide down to the horses. It was a bit of a mountainside rodeo convincing the mule to shoulder this bear but he finally calmed down and accepted the smell of danger. Watching Robb hypnotically convince this mule was fascinating and one of the highlights of the trip for me. This week in the mountains of the Wyoming Range was a gift from the Lord, an epic adventure that culminated in taking the bear of a life-time; a week where I made new friends and memories worth far more than the price of admission. It was an adventure I will never forget and will never grow tired of re-telling the story to family and friends. Bears are more sacred to me now than ever and I can’t wait to have “clean miss” home where I can give thanks for him every day.

WYOGA HUNTING STORY CONTEST WINNER
BIG GAME HUNTING
“ALWAYS LOOK BEHIND…” BY AARON LENTZ
AFTER AN EXCEPTIONAL 2016 ELK HUNT, my father and I couldn’t wait for another opportunity to hunt with SNS Outfitter and Guides. Fortunately, we didn’t have to wait long and successfully drew antelope tags in 2017. We quickly made travel plans and started counting down the days until our return to Wyoming! While my father had taken several Wyoming antelope in the 1970’s, this would be my first opportunity to chase “speed goats”. I have always been intrigued by antelope because it is such a unique species to North America. With only one preference point, this was not considered a “record book” hunt and my expectations were focused on spending quality time with my father, enjoying the wide open landscape, and harvesting a beautiful antelope buck to share with friends and family. Upon arrival in Casper, we met our guide for the week, Randy George. Within minutes we started to develop a friendship and camaraderie with Randy that fellow hunters and outdoorsmen can certainly appreciate. I was impressed by his guiding experience and his knowledge of the ranch we would be hunting. On top of everything else, the weather forecast looked perfect. There was no chance I would be able to sleep the first night in camp! The next morning dawned clear and crisp. After a hearty breakfast, we were on our way and within minutes we were glassing antelope. We spent the morning exploring the ranch and saw hundreds of antelope, including some beautiful bucks. Randy convinced us that it was worthwhile to be selective this first morning and look for one of the spectacular bucks that called this ranch home. It wasn’t long until we spotted a true monster. Even at 500 yards, the mass and height of his horns stood out among the sagebrush. It set
up for a perfect stalk and my pulse began to increase. There was one small problem. The buck was on the neighbor’s property. After checking our GPS position, we confirmed that this buck was off limits and regretfully moved on in search of another Wyoming giant. Needless to say, our optimism was sky high after this encounter. We continued moving around the ranch and spotted numerous herds of antelope. It was late morning when we pulled to the top of a tall rise in order to glass the valley in front of us. Maybe it was having one too many cups of coffee in the bunkhouse, but my father felt the call of nature and walked to the back of the truck. He immediately notified Randy that we had just driven past a good buck feeding in a low swale. Randy took one look through his binoculars and quickly announced, “he’s a toad!” I had never heard
this expression to describe an antelope, but Randy’s excitement dispelled any doubts about his size. We swiftly planned our strategy and within minutes I had a stable rest from 200 yards out. The shot was true and a once-in-lifetime antelope was on the ground. As we approached, he just kept getting bigger and bigger. The old warrior had a complete cataract that likely blinded any vision from his left eye. This was serendipitous as we had driven within a hundred yards of him just minutes earlier. His position in a low spot combined with the course of the road almost saved him that morning. As a practicing urologist, I appreciated the irony of what led to my father spotting the massive antelope! After harvesting my buck, it was time to find something special for my father. It didn’t take long and that afternoon we jumped an amazing non-typical antelope with a third horn growing just above his eye. The extra horn partially obstructed his left eye. Whether it was his limited vision or the ongoing rut, this buck was wild and unpredictable. It took two days of glassing, hiking, and stalking until everything came together. A buck that we couldn’t get within 500 yards of was ultimately taken at less than 50 yards after the most exciting stalk I have ever been part of. The buck’s unique frame and elusiveness highlighted an unforgettable 3 days of hunting. I can’t thank Randy George and SNS Outfitter and Guides enough for their professionalism, hard work, and friendship. My father introduced me to the outdoors and sharing this experience with him is a memory that will last a lifetime. Without him, the trip and the magnificent buck would have never happened. Now I guess it’s time to book that mule deer hunt…

2018 HONORARY LIFETIME MEMBER AWARD BIG GAME HUNTING
MARION SCOTT
AM A LIFELONG RESIDENT OF NORTHEAST WYOMING and lived all my 85 years on the Ranch on north Wildcat Creek where my grandfather homesteaded 101 years ago. I started hunting at an early age and shot my first Mule Deer buck at 14 years old. We started taking nonresident hunters about 1949 so began my guiding experiences for Mule Deer and Pronghorn Antelope. I married the love of my life, Mary McClure in 1953 and she has continued to be my best friend, hunting and business partner since. We raised 4 wonderful daughters and have 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great -grand child, all great family additions and such a blessing for us. Mary and I got the sheep-hunting bug and over 40 years hunting, each of us has a Grand -Slam of North American Wild Sheep along with 15 other North American species each. Mary and I started building our outfitting and guiding business on our Ranch soon after our marriage. My good friend and outfitting mentor, Leo Tass of Buffalo, WY encouraged us to join the WY. Outfitters Association. We began growing the business leasing hunting on nearby ranches and hired part time guides. In 1975 we attended our first WYOGA meeting in Dubois where Leo was elected President and chose me for his Secretary. Thus began my long period of working with the Association as a board member and two years as president.

For several years I helped my brother Bill Scott guide for the Chrystal Springs Ranch where Teton Village is now. When the Ranch sold, Bill and I got the wild idea to buy a hunting camp in Jackson Hole. Larry Moore, who had come to Jackson with Bill after they were discharged from the Armed services, died at a young age. We bought Larry’s Granite Creek hunting camp from his widow and leased the Ranch. Bill was the licensed Outfitter. We operated the camp for about ten years until it was interfering too much with our Ranch outfitting so we sold it. Safari Club Int. now owns the Granite Ranch and runs their Outdoor Leadership School there. It’s been a great life, Ranching, Outfitting and hunting has been very good to us. Over the years we have developed a very successful outfitting operation and made many friends worldwide. We are now booking two and three years ahead as our hunts are very popular with our many clients. We know our hunting and ranching business will continue in good hands with our grand-son-in-law and granddaughter Pat and Amanda Fiedor taking over. I was honored to serve my country by serving eight years in the Wyoming Army National Guard and still ranch and guide. Safari Club Int. honored Mary and I with the North American Professional Hunter Award in 1993 and the C. J. McElroy Award in 2007. Thank you WYOGA for this very special award, Mary and I are honored and humbled to receive it. Marion Scott

2018 GUIDE OF THE YEAR TROY LAIRD
THE HIGH HONOR AND DISTINCTION of being selected as the WYOGA “Guide of the Year” for 2018 goes to Troy D. Laird of Tyler Sims Outfitting (TSO) located in McFadden, Wyoming. Any hunter who has shared time with Troy will speak of his infectious grin and his knowledge of hunting in the Cowboy State. The one term which is always present in a description of Troy Laird is “professional guide”. One of Troy’s guiding values and principles is to bring the highest professionalism to everything he says and does. Troy started life in the winter of 1966 in Perry, IA. He graduated from Basin High School (WY) in 1986 where he played football, basketball, and wrestled. When not playing sports, Troy spent his free time hunting and fishing. He still pursues hunting and fishing in his leisure time and has ranged from border-to-border and coast-to-coast following his passion for the outdoors. Troy now lives in Laramie, Wyoming where he has raised his family. Troy owns and operates

His wife, Tina, is an experienced RN at Ivinson memorial hospital who keeps the house running smoothly when Troy is out guiding. Troy and Tina have three children. His two sons are DJ and Lee. Darci is their daughter. Troy and Tina both practice “random acts of kindness” and follow the
philosophy of “paying it forward”. Troy has donated a great number of days to the Outdoor Dream Foundation either guiding young kids or traveling in the summer to see them. Troy Laird started his guiding career with Steve Sheaffer Outfitters of McFadden, WY in 2003. He later started his employment with Tyler Sims Outfitting and it is with TSO where he developed his reputation as a professional guide. TSO is well known for having a very high percent of return hunters. Many of those returning hunters request that they be teamed up with Troy. For countless hunters across America Troy Laird is the face of Wyoming and the hunting and fishing industry. Sportsmen ask to hunt with Troy by name and enjoy just spending time with this exceptional man in the beautiful Wyoming outdoors. Troy Laird is deserving of the award of WYOGA “Guide of the Year” and will be an outstanding representative of our industry!

2018 HONORARY LIFETIME MEMBER AWARD BIG GAME HUNTING
GLENN TAYLOR
GLENN TAYLOR SAYS HE MIGHT have been “born to be an outfitter”. He was born in 1934, the same year that his parents, Verland and Joella Taylor, obtained their first outfitter’s license. You might say that Glenn grew up with the business. He and his brother learned early to be independent and to work with horses. When the family lived on the Elk Ranch, Glenn and his brother drove a team and sleigh to school at the Moose Head Ranch. It was quite a distance for two boys in the 2nd and 4th grades. Glenn has attended every school in Teton County except Zenith and Alta. He graduated from Jackson-Wilson High School and attended the University of Wyoming. It made a big impression on Glenn when his father Verland was tasked with tracking and killing a problem grizzly. After an 11-yearpursuit, tracking the old grizzly on snowshoes, and using 13 shots from a rifle too small for the job, Verland was finally able to prevail. The huge bear scored 9th in Boone and Crockett records for that year - 1945. Hunting and fishing were an essential part of the family’s livelihood every summer and fall. As their opportunities grew, Verland and Joella established permitted, back-country camps: on the head of the Gros Ventre in 1948; a oneyear temporary camp in 1949 on Pilgrim Creek; and a summer/fall location on the south fork of the Buffalo River. As Glenn was approaching adulthood, his parents purchased a ranch on the upper Gros Ventre River and later, one on Lower Slide Lake. Of course they were interested in moving their hunting operations closer to home. After a chance encounter on the trail, Mr. Faler from Pinedale encouraged Verland to apply for a campsite that Falers didn’t intend to occupy on the Gros Ventre River just north of Chateau Lake.

For several years, Glenn, along with his parents, operated the camp on the South Fork of the Buffalo and the Gros Ventre Camp. They finally consolidated their camp to the Gros Ventre location, which has been operated by three generations of Taylors continuously since 1952. The family emphasis has always been on good stewardship, taking care of the resources, keeping a clean camp, and providing life-long memories for their many satisfied customers. 1960 brought the entire family good fortune when Glenn married Marian DiStefano. She fit in with the ranching and outfitting operations seamlessly and became a necessary part of both endeavors. Verland and Joella; Glenn and Marian; and later, Brian and Amy blended ranching and outfitting, taking care of a small cattle herd as well as the horses needed for both businesses. Outfitting being a seasonal business, Glenn and Marian always supplemented their income with cattle, timber, firewood, some construction work, and any other opportunity to keep the proverbial wolf from the door. Marian sold milk and kept an economical home while Glenn picked up every job he could. Glenn says, “I enjoy what I’m doing, whether I’m riding my horse, driving my pickup, or whatever there is to be done.” He does believe in the adage: “The outside of a horse is good for the inside of a man.” His good attitude has probably contributed to his health and longevity. Glenn and Marian raised their family on Slide Lake. Their son Bruce has helped with guiding and packing at times, but has a business of his own in Sheridan, Wyoming. Daughter, Linda, is a teacher and like her dad, loves to ride good horses. Laura, their youngest, also works in education and has often expressed her respect for her parents’ examples of hard work, citizenship, and good
520-620-9313
manners. Their son, Brian, and his Wyomingborn wife, Amy, have chosen to follow the family traditions of ranching and outfitting. There are nine Taylor grandchildren. The Taylor family is very proud of their long history of providing hunting, fishing, and summer pack trips. Their hard work is tempered by awesome views, vast skies, humbling silence, and if you’re lucky enough to have a camp cook like Joella, Marian, or Amy, great food. The cook tent on the Gros Ventre has always been a welcoming sanctuary after a strenuous afternoon of hunting or a return from the early “dawn patrol.” Glenn has not gone to hunting camp for a few seasons. Amy and Brian now have their name on the Taylor permits and on the same beautiful camp location. Their two children go to camp with them whenever their own jobs aren’t in the way. Their hope is that their care of the land and the wildlife will ensure that the heritage of hunting will be passed along for generations. After spending years in the hospitality business, Glenn has met many people from all walks of life. Some spend only one season but others have become treasured friends, returning to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, and other life events. A long career has seen Glenn give back to his chosen industries and to his community. He served two terms as chair of the Jackson Hole Outfitters and Guides Association and one term as chair of WYOGA. He has been a member of the board of directors for the Wyoming Stockgrowers Association for many years and was on the Wyoming Livestock Board for six years. Glenn served as president of the Jackson Hole Cattle and Horse Association and several terms on the board of directors. He was elected to the local school board and is a Master Mason. Glenn lost his beloved Marian a couple of years ago. It was a hard blow, but he has found comfort and solace in caring for his land and his cattle. He still rides his range allotment on most summer days. He is proud of Brian and Amy and of their strong desire to keep the Taylor Family camp a recreational destination for lucky hunters and guests.

At Non-Typical Outfitters we offer an unmatched hunting opportunity. The amount of time spent before the season scouting for your trophy animal and preparing for your hunt is one of the things that separate us from the rest. We have a diversified hunting area with cabin accommodations as well as our forest camps. Here at Non-Typical Outfitters we have a focus on hunting one animal and taking that animal with one shot. We now offer a summer shooting class to help hunters obtain the skills for that one shot kill. This class is a practice of practical field positions for effectively killing big game with one shot and will give you the skills to make that one shot count, whatever the terrain, the animal, or the mountain throws at you.

BIG HORN HUNTING IS OUR PASSION
At Lost Creek Outfitters we offer guided hunts for rocky mountain big horn sheep, mountain goat, elk, mule deer, and antelope. We offer hunts in two locations, in Cody on the Shoshone Forest and on private land near Casper. Our mission is to maintain our commitment of being a small high quality, hunting and pack-trip, operation. We strive to be the best outfitters in the business, not ‘just one of the good ones.’ We truly value and cherish our clients and the great friends they become. We want their experience with us to be prized for a life time. We are strictly a fair chase, legal operation who loves the wildlife and the opportunities we have to pursue them. We study and live with the game, we hunt and love sharing our experiences and knowledge with others.

IMPORTANT NOTICE!!! HUNTING WITH AN OUTFITTER IN THE STATE OF WYOMING
DON’T BE A VICTIM OF UNLICENSED OUTFITTERS OR GUIDES
Wyoming holds hunters responsible for knowingly booking with an unlicensed outfitter. Wyoming law states: W.S. 23-2-418. Compensation of person not licensed under this act prohibited; penalty.
BIG GAME HUNTING
PROFESSIONAL GRAPHIC DESIGN
(a) No person shall directly or indirectly compensate a person holding himself out as engaging in the business of or acting in the capacity of an outfitter or a professional guide unless that person provides proof that he is a licensed outfitter or professional guide as required by this act. (b) Any person violating this section is guilty of a misdemeanor as prescribed under W.S. 23-2-417 (a).

BIG GAME HUNTING ADVENTURE 2019
Nonresident deadlines
Jan. 31 — Elk Feb. 28 — Moose, Bighorn Sheep, Mountain Goat, Bison May 31 — Deer, Antelope
Nonresident big game license applications start January 2
Laws 1997, ch. 79, § 3, provides: “The Game & Fish Department shall, through its publications, and other reasonable means, including providing information when mailing licenses to successful applicants, notify all applicants for game and fish licenses of the provisions of W.S. 23-2-418.” W.S. 23-2-417. Violation in general; penalties. (a) Any person violating any provision of this act is guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of not to exceed five thousand dollars ($5,000.00). (b) In addition to subsection (a) of this section, the court may in its discretion, revoke any license issued under this act or W.S. 23-1-101 through 23-6-208, to any person violating this act, for the remainder of the year in which the conviction occurs, and may suspend the person's privilege to receive any license under this act or under W.S. 23-1-101 through 23-6-208, for a period not to exceed five (5) years. If you are compensating anyone for hunting outfitted services, request to see a copy of their outfitter’s or guide’s license to be sure they are legal. Professional Guide licenses must be signed on the back by the employing outfitter. Outfitters are licensed for specific areas and species that are listed on their license. It is against the law for them to operate outside of their authorized areas. Licensing is for the protection of the public to ensure they have a safe and enjoyable trip. Landowners are exempt under W.S. 23-2-406 (a) (iv) (B) which states: "Landowner" means any person, firm or corporation holding title to, or occupying under a contract of purchase, agricultural land or any person whose family owns at least a majority of the stock in a Wyoming Corporation and who provides services specified in this paragraph on lands owned by the corporation and used primarily for agricultural purposes. Anyone wishing to receive further information on outfitters and guides, or a list of licensed outfitters in the State of Wyoming, may write to the Wyoming State Board of Outfitters and Professional Guides, 1950 Bluegrass Circle, Suite 280, Cheyenne, WY 82002.
Apply online at wgfd.wyo.gov
A current list of licensed outfitters is also on our website: http://outfitters.state.wy.us or you may call 1-800-264-0981.
