james gilbertson
hatherleigh football club
Congratula ons to James Gilbertson on reaching 150 senior games for the Hatherleigh Football Club.
James’ first game of senior football was in 2013 as a Senior Colt where he predominately played a tagging role, James also represented the League in the U17s the same year.
What James lacks in height he makes up for in determina on and enthusiasm which he has shown plenty of as an integral part of the 4 successive Reserves premierships in 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022. No other team in the Mid South East across both seniors and reserves football teams have been able to achieve this feat, there are currently only 4 players who have won all 4.
The Gilbertson name is sure to be around Hatherleigh for many years to come with James and his wife Shaye and their 3 sons, Harvey, Archie and Teddy set to follow in their father's footsteps for many years to come.
Congratula ons from everyone at Hatherleigh on 150 senior games!

opportuni es whilst limi ng ours, they also put our boys under pressure at every contact which we hadn't been used to all year A er 3 very mediocre quarters by our standards, the boys really pushed hard and found a gear in the last, ul mately falling short by less than a goal and giving us a taste of losing for the first me this year. To the guys credit, they fought un l the final siren and will take the loss on the chin and respond the next few weeks to set us up for a big finals. Best players were Shaunn Robinson who defended well all day, Brydon Klingberg who gave us a lot of opportuni es in the ruck, Brayden Rowe and Zeb Elshaug. Well done guys.

Under 11: Last week we had a strong and very talented group down at Port Mac, we came looking very excited and keen on a win. The tackling pressure was great from both teams. Best players were Asher - Wendy's, Jason - McDonalds and Zac who slo ed a few goals to keep it a close game, well done team.
Junior Colts: Last week, we came up against a strong Pt Mac team with a lot of top age players. A er a slow start, we fought hard and were much be er a er quarter me. Best players were Kaden Bell who is in fantas c form, Summer who rucked all day, Jedd who played his best game for the year at full back, Harley Chapple who worked up and down the ground all day and Kobe and Charlie Bromley who were solid down back.
Senior Colts: Last week seen us head down to the bay for a ba le between 1st vs 2nd on the ladder To the Bays credit, they got the jump on us and played some really good team footy, which gave them a heap of scoring
Reserves: Sunny and calm day down at the bay saw us go against a strong Pt Mac reserves. Good hard fight with plenty of link ups saw us go neck and neck for a solid quarter. The bay pushed hard and kept the energy for the rest of the game. Best players went to Nick Cory, Liam English, Zeke Courbois and Nick Joy
A Grade: Last week we went to Port Mac with very good weather condi ons. We started well matching it with the top team with great pressure and passages of play. A er that Port Mac showed us what a top 2 side is all about and played excellent team footy. We take the loss on the chin and keep learning and developing our young playing group. We are humble in defeat as one day when the roles are turned we will be humble when we win. Good morals and respect go a long way. Best players in no order Troy Ha , Braydn Reilly, Hayden Brown, Jack Dawe and Brandon Pi s.

A Grade: It was a glorious day the greeted us last week and the deck had recovered well from previous hammerings. The condi ons allowed us to get into our grove early, playing the style of footy we have been working on all year. The mids were on top, providing quality forward entries, allowing our forwards to u lise the space on offer. Our back six were again rock solid, not giving up many scoring opportuni es and repelling the ball out with skill. The only nega ve of the day was our inaccuracy in front of goals, kicking 22.22. Best players were Mikey Telford, Will Chay and Jed Telfer through the middle. Jack Skeer up forward who kicked 8 goals and Tom Hutch running through the middle and up forward who kicked 4.

B Grade: Congratula ons to James Gilbertson who ran out for his 150th senior game for the Eagles on the weekend. The boys started a bit flat and sluggish it took us a quarter to get into the game. Hats off to Nangas who brought some great pressure all day. We had 4 or 5 players out of our regular side, the boys that stepped in done they're roll and just shows the great depth we have in our reserves list at the moment, which leaves us in great shape leading into the pointy end of the season. We ran out 12 goal winners on Saturday, Reidy had the ball on a string across half back taking out BOG. Gilbo kicked 3 goals in his 150th. The Moth has enjoyed been back playing footy again bagging himself 7 goals, 13 in 2 weeks for the skipper. Aultshy work rate was second to none at CHF, Ethan Bowman rounded out the best.
Senior Colts: Against a compe ve Nangwarry side the
boys had to work hard for the points. In finally some dry weather, the group were able to play a brand of footy that is enjoyable to be a part of and watch. Tyson Atkinson had a great day on the ball and hi ng scoreboard. Zak Bowering was solid once again on the ball and taking a lot of marks. Aus n Ne le con nued his good form finding plenty of it. Hudson Nowak was clean off of half back, using the ball well. While, Oskar Howell was a great target up forward clunking a lot of grabs. Next week against Tant will be a great test to see where we are. Well done lads!
Junior Colts: Really pleased with how the team moved the ball last week against Nangwarry. I gave the team a challenge for the game and that was to kick more goals then points this week, being that we have been a li le bit waste full in front of goals. We started off the first quarter really well kicking 6.2, second quarter we were a bit off kicking 3.8, a er addressing it at half me we straightened up finishing the game 15.11 so I was please that the team took that focus on board. Best players: 1st best Riley Haines, Riley bounced back to his best this week giving us plenty of drive through the mid field. 2nd best was Eli Sims, Eli was accurate in front of goals snagging 5 goals, I was please with presents up forwards. 3rd best Harry Gilbertson, it’s been good to have Harry back with his fast pace and good skills. 4th best Ned Fitzgerald, Ned has been in good form the past month, really sets the play up from down back. 5th best Tait Grge c; Tait’s best game for the year, found himself in good posi ons deep forward crumbing a couple of goals.

As we headed over the hill to the home of the Tigers, mother nature decided it was going to give us a bit of everything during the day with 3 out of the 4 seasons and plenty of wind around to just keep things interes ng.
Under 11: With Tant having some reasonable numbers for the U11’s it was game on for the youngest Maggies as they probably had some of the be er condi ons for the day. There was a healthy crowd watching them strut their stuff and just enjoying their football each and every week.

Junior Colts: Almost back to full strength for the Junior Colts allowed Macca some addi onal flexibility around the ground along with giving a few players the opportunity to experience a new posi on which is import part of developing their footy cra . By the me the Juniors started the wind had picked up and took a li le while for the maggies to adapt to the condi ons but once they had you could see they had come to play. The 1st half we had found plenty of the ball across the ground but unfortunately just couldn’t get the score on the board as reward for all the hard work but at the half s ll well within the game only down by 19 points. The 3rd qtr saw the young Maggies li their intensity around the ground and easily had the be er of general play during the quarter and managed to kick a major to make sure s ll in the game. Tant had the wind at their backs in the last and to the teams credit defended really hard in the last and held Tant to only a couple of goals. While the result may not be there, the development and game play has improved out of sight throughout the year and probably one of the be er games the team has played so far this year Senior Colts: What a tough week for our ba ling senior colts but also an exci ng one at the same me with Brycie making his A grade debut later in the day. Having key players out of the engine room in Connor, Nato & Harry and Deano crook meant the numbers were lower than normal and up against the undefeated top side to make things tougher. Tommy threw a few players around and with a couple of players loaned across from Tant to make sure we had something that resembled a game of footy. Unfortunately it was never a contest but to the lads credit ba led out over the 4 qtrs and s ll managed to get a couple of goals through. Thanks to Bam Kent pu ng his hand up and coming across from Kongorong to help make numbers. Best players went to Joe Box, Coop, Bam, Blunay & Blake Ross.
B Grade: Tricky weather condi ons, including strong wind & rain greeted the B grade at Tantanoola on Saturday. Even though the condi ons were tricky the players were able to nego ate the condi ons and provide our forwards in Mitch Varcoe and Cam Auld mul ple scoring opportuni es. Brad Male played another super game in the ruck and gave onballers Tyler Jones and Mark Phillips
mul ple opportuni es to not only move the ball forward they also had numerous opportuni es to hit the scoreboard as well with both players combining for a total of 9 goals between them. The half back line provided run and carry with Jus n Mansell and Joe Foster providing pivotal in stopping any scoring opportuni es from Tantanoola. A er a li le lapse in the third quarter the boys again responded in the last and we were able to eventually run out winners by 111 points. A er the bye we are looking forward to some really challenging games and weeks ahead before finals.
A Grade: Another exci ng day for the club as the strong focus of developing our Senior Colts into Senior players con nues with another sui ng up for his debut game in A grade in Brycie Von Stanke-Dowie. A quiet achiever and new to the club this year has worked hard in the colts and earnt his call up for the A’s this week. One just has to look across the ground to be able to see the con nual development and ability to hold on to our players making our club one of the most successful in the league. With the B’s having copped some of the worst condi ons for the day, it was le to the A’s to ba le a wet slippery ball on an even more slippery oval in some pre y strong (ar c) winds at mes. As per the 1st round Tant went about playing a defensive brand of footy, one that would never see them win the game but at the same me manage the damage on the scoreboard and frustra ng teams. Tant had the scoring end in the 1st meaning our defence had to be on the ball but to the mids good work managed to find plenty of ball to our forwards all be it wide meaning both sides could only manage the singe goal for the quarter even with the maggies having 8 scoring shots. Having the wind in the 2nd we managed to get some ascendancy at mes around the ground with some good clearance work around the ground but never seemed to be able to adapt to both the weather condi ons and the nega ve style of play from the Tigers. Kicking 4.4 to the single goal for term saw the Maggies with a 27 point lead going into the main break. The 2nd half was almost iden cal the 1st with scoring tough in the 3rd as both sides again only managing the 1 major and the last kicking a couple more to end up with a 37 point tough win. Best players went to Tye Mac, Mitch Lowe, Sam Mac, Ma y Fatchen, Ben Gregory & Sam Casey. With the bye now under the belt and the end of the season fast approaching we look to a few tough weeks in what is set to shape the top 4 and its kicks of the welcoming the bay boys this weekend.
Congratula ons to all who helped make the Goods & Service Auc on a success. It was well represented by the community, well done to Gregsy, Creeky along with the help of the 2 Jacks to keep things rolling smoothly & efficiently, thank you to all who donated items & services and also those who dug deep in the hotly contested bidding.

Senior Colts: Last week we welcomed the top placed Tantanoola for what was going to be a nail biter! The boys started really well, in a high pressure first quarter, having plenty of the play and chances to get a score on the board, but inaccuracy go the boys again finishing 0.5 to Tant’s 0 at quarter me. The second quarter con nued to be intense, once again with plenty of the play and plenty of shots on goal, only managing 1 goal and another 4 points to be leading 1.9-15 to 1.1-7 at the main break. Another goal in the 3rd gave us a 3 kick lead heading into the last. Tant began the fight back and were able to square things up with not long to go un l Zeb Chant kicked a great goal to give us a 1 goal win. The boys were switched on from the start and really had a crack and deserved the victory. We know that we need to con nue working on our goal kicking and skills under pressure in high intense game. The game plan and intent was there all day, it was simply skills and execu on that prevented us from ge ng on top on the scoreboard. Best players sponsored by Key2Sale were Pa y Robinson, Casey Wilson, Riley Morgan, Jack Kain, Zeb Chant and Jacob Spehr Honourable men ons to Kai and Luke who played great games. Kurt who has been star ng to show what he is capable of and Lincoln Bowd showed some of the big boys how to get in and work hard for his teammates.
B Grade: Port MacDonnell 16.9 def Tantanoola 6.3. What a turn of events! The sun shining brightly and not a breath of wind around! A er the DDEECCW? (WT*). “discussion” of an ocean based wind turbine project receiving quite a frigid response from the community, the temperature in the TK box hit thermonuclear hot a er a nail-bi ng win by the senior colts (and I predict it will be the same teams for their GF) it was then our turn to play on a surface that looked surprisingly solid considering the weather of the past week. With a win over the Tigers there was the possibility of a finals berth on the horizon and in a game that everyone knew could go either way, the pressure was on and the boys to their credit stepped up to the plate. With an even contest for the ball thanks to the ruckwork of Rory Na rass, Grady Hutchesson and Chris Driver all over the ground the game found momentum in our favour as Ma “Mortal” Stark earned himself a B.O G. with his persistence to the ball. Ma together with wingmen Ryan Von Stanke and Fraser Lynch, were instrumental in crea ng the play coming through the centre and half forward line.
Debut player Adam Kuhl put his height and leg to good use, helping drive the ball off the CHB line and flanks, also managing to boot 4 goals, one of which was a massive torp from the 60 metre mark earning himself the number 2 spot on the BP list. Isaac “yellow(card) is the new black!” Na rass s ll earned third spot with his tenacity on the ball in the centre and flanks despite the odd lapse in discipline! Luke Pitson and Nathan Tilley moved stealthily through the back line packs while Blair Cu ng presented a welcome target at full forward and before injury in the second half managed to put 3 majors on the board. A surprise “over the head” kick from out of the pack (like father, like son!) earned Ben Newton a total of 2 goals for the day. Mason Brown and Adam Richards also kicked 2 each while Ma Stark and Ryan Von Stanke booted one apiece to round out the total of 16 for the game. With our third win in a row, we have put ourselves in the top four THIS week ….and I say THIS week only because there are other teams who can shape the ladder both on points and percentage. The pressure is now on for the team to take on… The Mission: Impossible (cue the 1960's music)… ALL out to training! ... the fuse is now lit… the mission should you accept it… to win and place yourselves in finals conten on!... GO DEMONS! (boom!)
A Grade: Port MacDonnell 21.19 def Tantanoola 5.4. With the weather holding off nicely we had another big win which has helped cement our posi on at the top of the ladder with percentage. That said, there are s ll two very important matches to play, and both are against quality opposi on. With a very even contest in the opening quarter, we had a small lead by the first break. A er a quick reassessment of the game plan, the second quarter saw us kick on with a 5goal burst and hold Tantanoola scoreless un l the fourth quarter. Tim Sullivan once again did a lot of the heavy li ing in ruck and remains a strong and stabilizing force around the centre. Alex Ridding had another field day with a bag of 7 to add to his haul for the year while Colby Munro trailed hot on his heels with 6 goals of his own, both players earning themselves a first and second on the BP list respec vely Ned Wilke and Wade Chant both helped with the ruck through the back line, con nually stopping the ball moving into the Tant forward area and steadied the CHB posi on, both winning a gong in the BP. Josh Woodall created a lot of drive through the centre while Chris an Howle ran the flanks relessly pushing the ball forward at every chance. Solid and reliable performances from Ethan G, Mark Smith, Zac Williams and Kyall McClean give depth to our game and a real shot at the Flag this season. This week it is Kalangadoo and while they are coming fresh off a bye, if we keep up our work rate and do the hard yards, we may just see some Magpie feathers fly! GO DEMONS!

The weather was great down at Hatherleigh on Saturday, when the sun was out it got quite warm. Both our junior grades were under manned and to give all the goods a run Hatherleigh lent us a few players. They must be commended for how their junior in both Junior and Senior colts gave their all and played in great spirits the children really appreciate a game where everyone plays hard and those who are helping give their all.
This Saturday night sees the major fundraiser of the year for the club our Auc on night. We encourage all players to come along enjoy tea and and bid on some great items up for grabs.
We would we'd like to individually thank our several Sponsors for suppor ng the Nangwarry Netball and Football Club for season 2023. This week we acknowledge Joanne and Gadget for their dona on and the Prince of Wales (POW) for their community give back earlier this year

team efforts also. Some really good passages of play on display. Best on was Tayte Virtanen played with a lot of heart and never gave up all day
Senior Colts: Boys played a really good first half ge ng themselves just behind by 2 goals but unfortunately fell away in the last half. Very proud of the boys determina on and effort to win the ball.
B Grade: Ah, well done to the boys, they all had a crack and gave a 100 percent out there, we were very under manned so thank you to everyone who showed up to play and put their hand up to help out, we are s ll a chance to make finals so we need everyone out on the track. Also to all the under 17s that helped out thank you and well done to Tayte for stepping up and playing his 3rd game for the day, and we wish Benne a speedy recovery
Earlier this year the club was lucky enough to be selected by the POW as the local community club to receive $5 from every main meal on a Monday night. Thank you to all who supported this great cause. We thank the POW for their kind dona on and encourage everyone to call in a have a drink when possible.
Spor ng clubs would not survive without sponsorship, so we thank you very much.
Under 11: The sun was shining bright and early for us in Hatherleigh. With the assistance from the opposi on we got a good game in with plenty of space to run. It was an even contest for the en re game with great skills and execu on shown. Everyone put in a good effort and tried for the whole game.
Junior Colts: Travelled down to take on Hatherleigh this week. We had good numbers on the day which we pleasing. Not the greatest result and unfortunately our first quarter wasn't our best. But can't fault the endeavour and heart shown by the boys for the remaining 3 quarters. Once we got going we showed we can match up with any team, just got to be able to capitalise on our inside 50s. It was s ll a great game to watch with some great individual efforts but also some great
A Grade: We travelled down to Hatherleigh to take on another team well entrenched in the final 4. It concluded a 3 week fixture where we played 1st, 2nd and 3rd on the ladder We arrived at Hatherleigh with a different side to previous week's introducing 2 new debutantes. We congratulate Jayden Moore and young colt Calais Borman playing their first senior football game for Nangwarry Football Club. The game for us was played in 2 halves. The first half we were disappointed with our lack of pressure and were easily distracted from playing the brand of football that we as a group have worked hard as a team together all year allowing Hatherleigh to control the game and score easily. We addressed this at half me and a response was noted from the outset. Our intensity li ed. We applied more pressure and our ball control and run was much be er allowing us to be much more compe ve. Not only did we slow the scoring rate of our opposi on we were able to hit the scoreboard ourselves. In the end we were able to kick 5 second half goals whilst restric ng Hatherleigh to 9 goals. To put such a young team on the park and to see them dig in, respond and refuse to roll over I could only walk off very proud of this young group and we can all see the founda on for future on field success for this football club is clearly set. Best players for the day were Jack Stocker, Luke Thomson, Tyler Virgo, Thomas Vanderhorst, Logan Gibbs and Joel Virtanen. Next week we play host to Glencoe and we look forward to playing in front of all our loyal supporters before our biggest fund raising event of the year, Auc on Night. See you all there.

Last week we played Mt Burr at home and faced some close contested games. Although we only came away with 1 win from the 4 games, we were in the lead at some stage throughout all the matches.

Junior Colts: The Junior Colts con nued their huge winning streak as they marched over their opposi on. It was cold early on in the morning and condi ons were probably the worst for this game. The boys came away with a 9.10 (64) to 2.2 (14) win. 3 games to go to ensure they finish with a top 2 posi on on the ladder and enter finals in great form. Best players were Kallan Price, Kade Mulraney, Connor Tweddle, Tighe Hurley and Les Jagger.
Senior Colts: The Senior Colts played a fantas c game against a highly fancied opponent and were up all game. We lead at 3 quarter me by 2 goals, but in the last quarter Mt Burr started extremely well and kicked 3 quick goals to take the lead. The final 10 minutes were very close and intense with both teams scoring and figh ng for the lead. In the end we went down by 4 points, but the boys should be proud of the improvement they have shown since their last ou ng against Mt Burr Best players were Declan Mutch, Kaleb Price, Lachlan Brierley, Marcus McGrath, Digby Richards-Fennell and Bailey Dale.
B Grade: For the first me all year the Reserves had 18 adults playing and only required the senior colts to fill
up the bench. Hopefully, players con nue to be available over the last few rounds we search for our first win. We started the game very well coming into quarter me with the scores basically level. A er this though, the Burr ran away with it and some poor discipline from our boys lead to some easy goals. We ended up going down by 58 points. Best players Sam Hentschke, Josh Agars, Mitch Li le, Shannon Megaw, Jayson Finnis and Bevan Lipscombe.
A Grade: The Seniors were looking to con nue their late season form and con nue upse ng sides above us on the ladder. The game was even for most of the match, but Mt Burr took control of the 2nd quarter and went into the half me break with a 4goal lead. We were then able to respond and kicked 7 goals in the 3rd term to lead slightly at the final break. The last quarter was close and we ended up going down by 9 points. A much bigger improvement from our first ou ng against the Burr. Best players were Tom Edwards, Brodie Glynn, Darcy Williamson, Zacc Cocks, Dylan Childs and Harry Comley.
This week we travel to Nangwarry and look forward to the contest against them. We are also having our Rump and Red Night a er the Nangwarry game back at the RSL. Tickets are $45 and it will be great to see as many people as possible there to dress up for a formal event with our sponsors and a nice meal that we don't have to prepare ourselves.

Junior Colts: The boys showed a new level to their game last week with a great effort against a top side. Defensively we looked like a different team compared to when me played Glencoe last. Finn was outstanding in the backline and con nued those efforts when moved onto the ball. Logan’s abili es down back are second to none and paired with Jackson’s hard running and effort to get the ball the pair were nearly unstoppable. So much improvement from everyone this season and you can expect that to con nue into the last two rounds.
Senior Colts: Last week we had a super win against a very determined Glencoe side that ran it up to us all game. In a very important game for our finals chances the boys put in a great team effort. Best players were Sam Hunt, Brady Sharp, Jackson Dean, Charlie Bevan, Cohen Montuori and Bradlee Lawson.

B Grade: It was always going to be a tough game going to Glencoe and hoping to come away with the points. This was certainly true in the first quarter, where, despite having more of the ball, the 3 goal each scoreline indicated it was going to be a close game. However, a er quarter me we only conceded 1 goal and kicked 10 ourselves to run away with a comprehensive victory. It was our most consistent game for the year with strong performances from all of our players. It was great for Natedog to be involved in his first win as a senior footballer. Best players were tough to pick but it was hard to go past our captain Jacob Gregory who not only kicked his first goal for the year, added 3 more just for fun. DJ was dominate across half back, Brodie kicked 5, Lachie had his best game (3 goals) as a very small forward, Brock provided a huge amount of run and Morrie & Ed helped set up the win in the first half. We look forward to a big occasion this
A Grade: Good to be back on the winners list a er a tough game at Glencoe. We got the start we were a er but to Glencoe’s credit they wouldn’t go away and a hot third quarter by them had us figh ng hard in the last quarter to come away with the win. Happy with the way the boys finished off the last quarter and stood tall against a hard pressing Glencoe side. Thanks to Ed Ballantyne for being the late call up a er playing a quarter and a half of the reserves. Best players were - 1. Je Bowering who had a huge last quarter for us, shouldering the ruck du es and figh ng tooth and nail as he always does. 2. Spanksy who was another to have a big last quarter, rolling from the ruck into the ruck rover posi on and doing what was needed to win. 3. Sam Wallis who once again spoiled every ball that came his way and rebounded from defence me and me again. 4. Kal Bevan who finished the day with 5 goals and a huge first half. Happy to have him back with us for the Glencoe game and wish him all the best for the rest of the year in Adelaide. 5. Josh Fiebig who moved onto the wing a er half me and played some good old classic Fiebig Football. Really helped us set up the last quarter. 6. Swaggy who kicked 5 goals too and looked dangerous each me the ball was in his hands. Proved he does listen to me a er correc ng my half me speech. Well done and thank you to all involved in making the 2023 Mt Burr Sports Carnival a successful night! Some ques onable dance moves (Je ) and costumes (Rossy) but what a night it was.

Robe too good, but we live to fight another day. Jacob Arthurson was outstanding all day, and Sean Madden played another strong game. Brad Long was very good across half back, with Riley Maconachie finding plenty of the footy also.
