GAME PREVIEW West Gambier v East Gambier With five rounds already in the books, fans now have a true understanding as to where their respective club sits in the Bendigo Bank Western Border Football League pecking order as players prepare for the first rematches of the season this weekend.
THOMAS MILES - SE VOICE
Sitting two wins behind fourth-placed Millicent, Wenman will be aware his men cannot afford too many more slips and needs to produce a fourquarter effort against its main rivals. West has pushed every opponent and class operators Lawrey Bradley-Brown, Tom Holmes and Todd Lewis have never been far away from the ball.

Casterton Sandford v North Gambier For the second week in a row, football fans will venture down to Island Park praying for Casterton Sandford to get its first win of 2021 on The two previous East and West encounters at the board. South Gambier’s hard work over the summer has paid off in spades and Brayden Kain’s side is the hot favourite for the flag. However, the makeup of the ladder behind the dominant Demons is anyone’s guess and two sides featuring in the battle for second go headto-head at Malseed Park. The Saints could provide a tougher challenge,
Since a forgetful Anzac Day loss, the Tigers have licked their wounds and charged back into the ascendancy with some fighting wins over Millicent and West. Now North hopes to take its winning form to top notch with a percentage-boosting win just like it did against the Victorians in the opening round. Sam Stafford and Justin McConnell slotted seven and six majors respectively to kick off the season and have hardly slowed down since. Young guns Adam Prosperi-Porta, Jack O’Connor, Henry Gould and Joel Griffith have all made immediate impacts at the top level and some more fresh faces could be given an opportunity this weekend. For the Cats, 2021 is about small signs of development and they have seen some in the last couple of weeks. Kane Forbes’ men have attacked the contest hard during the opening stages of games and made their opponents earn every possession. However, the effort post quarter time is a major concern for Casterton Sandford having conceded 239 points in the last three terms of the previous two games. Be prepared for another tough slog for the V i c to r i a n s a s t h ey search for little wins, while North fine tunes its game.

West Gambier Blue & Red Well a big day was happening at Vansi art park and some great football was played on the day. Started of with our under 14s who came against a strong North Gambier team. The boys started of slow but hit the straps and got going and played some good passages of play during the day. If we con nue to play good football like that we will turn it around quickly with some consistent compe ve football. Best player Koby Stratman who is having a great year and leading from the front, Toby Stutley as compe ve as ever working hard. Harvey Croker, Brodie Szopory and Jordan Heemskerk where named our best players. The under 16s played a great game with a great game off football. The boys are star ng to put some really good passages of play together and working as a team. Billy Wiese keeps scoring goals and is hard to stop forward / on the ball and kicking another 5 was a great return. Brooklyn Winterfield was named best on ground with hard at it approach. Tom Smith, Charlie Carson has found his spot on the wing and is playing some great football, Billy Wiese, Sam Medhurst and Joe Judd were named best players. With some players back in the side it was great to get some reward for effort. Has been a tough year for the 18s with a lot of players missing games at mes. In a ght contest, fair contest it was great effort for them to get over the line in the last quarter. Ba na Say the No 1 goal Kicker with 3 goals is hard to stop when he sees the goals. Special Men on should go to Josh Cornolo’s goal. Started with a full stretch diving smother, to have the ball stay in his hands as he snapped the ball around the corner whilst being tackled by 7 North players to kick the goal from the boundary on a very ght angle. Great effort and a great goal Josh. Aaron Ramsey was great all day giving us plenty of rebound and run out of the

backline and when in the ruck giving us first hands on the ball. Bomber was typical Bomber pu ng his head in places he shouldn’t and pu ng his body on the line. Jack Carson leads the way with his heart every me he takes to the field and was outstanding again, Ethan Gladman and BaNa Say rounded out the best players. Nathan Lewis and the boys are star ng to get more and more confidence and are playing some great football. Thanks to Dirty Dave who put his hand up to umpire be grudgingly but done a great thankless job. We are a er an umpire for the B grade so if you are interested in helping out please let someone know and we will get you out for a run. Best players was the only bloke who makes Billy Ray look like he has good knees in Rowan Fox. Lewis McClintock came back a er a long injury lay off and was good Followed by Dale Robbins, Tom (same age as his jumper) Doolan and Kiwi. In a ght game all day with the biggest margin being the final score it was disappoin ng end to the day. So close again which is a hard pill to swallow, we are improving and the wins will start this week. Lawrence Bradley Brown leads from the front week in week out and con nued again on Saturday. Reece Cowling knows one way which is great and refreshing to see a kid take it on, Todd McPartlan solid and reliable, Todd Lewis, Brandon (bulldog ) Kranz has a heart and gives 150 % every contest along with Alex Jarnevic growing in confidence each week being the best players. Against East we are hungry to get over the line so get out and support the boys and get a win in every grade.
Red & Black
Hello footy lovers and what a season it has started out to be. The East A and B grade started the year of with wins and wins. But now we are facing a tough month as we are waiting for done key payers to return from injuries.
Last weeks game against Millicent was hard to watch at the start as the ball movement from East was extremely slow and it wasn’t until the last quarter they showed some life.
With junior footy been held on the back oval the Mecca will be bubbling with excitement. Special yell out to all the volunteers at the East club. Also quick reminder about the ‘Little Master’ Gary Yellaaaaaaabletttttt Jnr appearing at the club next month, tickets are nearly sold out so get in fast to catch one of the best to ever play the game. Go Dogs.
But last week is gone and we take on the mighty Roos this week at the Mecca. Well it used to be the Mecca when Blocka was leading the ship. As my kids say the home of the best meat pie. I like a steak and I’m looking forward to seeing my under 14s cricket coach Mr Ken Fowels who had volunteered his time over the grill for years. Hoping to see Blocka if he is not s t i l l i n a c o r p o ra t e b ox I n Melbourne as he was for the first 6 weeks of the year. (That new hub must be using some concrete)

South Gambier Red & White We know it’s been a tough year for Casterton Sandford so far but you wouldn’t guess it from the attendance and spirit of everyone at the footy last Saturday. Good weather and a first class day from a bunch of first class people. The seniors began half asleep and could not hit a target in the first quarter with the Cats taking it right up to them. The second quarter saw South gain a scoreboard advantage with coach Kain the leading light with most of the early goals. The third quarter was again a tight tussle with superior fitness seeing us run away in the last quarter. It certainly did not feel as impressive a victory as the final result and the backline boys should to be recognised for this, these boys have turned into a very tight unit. Kaleb Bowd saw more midfield time and had a welcome return to form, with Todd Reid, Jake Tentye, old man Crayfish
V
Howard and Robbie Hein rounding out the best players. Kainy’s 7 goals were the highlight of the match with the Little Master also snagging 4.
Despite losing some guns to the seniors the reserves went on their merry way with another big win. Emerson Marks who could be/ should be playing senior footy and was best along with Adam Kuhl, Mitch Laube, Luke Foran who has been outstanding all year and Duncan Reid. A multitude of goalkickers led by Elmo with 5 and Fish with 3. We really admire the fighting spirit of the Cats and it was great to see a heap of people from both clubs in the club room afterwards. Best of luck to all players and teams this week.

For a present last year during covid my partner purchased me a week of private lessons with a personal trainer. Though s ll in reasonable shape from footy season the year before, I decided it was a good idea to go ahead and try it. I called and made appointment with someone named Tanya, who said she is a 26-year-old aerobic and fitness personal trainer and athle c clothing model. My partner seemed very pleased with how enthusias c I was to get started.
So, on day 1 they suggest I keep this "exercise diary" to monitor my progress for the week... Day 1 Started the morning at 6:00 AM. Tough to get up, but worth it when I arrived at the gym and Tanya was wai ng for me. She's something of a goddess, with blonde hair and a dazzling white smile. She showed me the machines and took my pulse a er five minutes on the treadmill. She seemed a li le alarmed that it was so high, but I think just standing next to her in that ou it of hers added about ten points. Enjoyed watching the aerobics class. Tanya was very encouraging as I did my sit ups, though my gut was already aching a li le from holding it in the whole me I was talking to her. This is going to be GREAT. Day 2 Took a whole lot of coffee to get me out the door, but I made it. Tanya had me lie on my back and push this heavy iron bar up into the air. Then she put weights on it, for heaven's sake! Legs were a li le wobbly on the treadmill, but I made it the full kilometre Her smile made it all worth it. Muscles feel GREAT. Day 3 The only way I can brush my teeth is by laying the tooth brush on the counter and moving my mouth back and forth over it. I am certain that I have developed a hernia in both pectorals. Driving was okay as long as I didn't try to steer. I parked on top of a Volkswagen. Tanya was a li le impa ent with me and said my screaming was bothering the other club members. The treadmill hurt my chest so I did the stair monster. Why would anyone invent a machine to simulate an ac vity rendered obsolete by the inven on of elevators? Tanya told me regular exercise would make me live longer. I can't imagine anything worse. Day4 Tanya was wai ng for me with her vampire teeth in a full snarl. I can't help it if I was half an hour late, it took me that long just to e my shoes. She wanted me to li dumbbells. Not a chance, Tanya. The word "dumb" must be in there for a reason. I hid in the men's room un l she sent Ben looking for me. As punishment she made me try the rowing machine. It sank. Day 5 I hate Tanya more than any human being has ever hated any other human being in the history of the world. If there was any part of my body not in extreme pain, I would hit her with it. She thought it would be a good idea to work on my triceps. Well, I have news for you Tanya I don't have triceps. And if you don't want dents in the floor don't hand me any barbells. I refuse to accept responsibility for the damage, YOU went to sadist school, YOU are to blame. The treadmill flung me back into a science teacher, which hurt like crazy. Why couldn't it have been someone so er, like a music teacher. Day 6
Millicent Red, Black & White Got Tanya's message on my answering machine, wondering where I am. I lacked the strength to use the TV remote so I watched eleven straight hours of the weather channel. Day 7 Well, that's the week. Thank God that's over. Maybe next me my partner will give me something a li le more fun, like a free root canal at the den st’s... Our A grade boys flexed their muscles and had an outstanding win. Playing their best game of the season. Crags best on and kicking 3 goals, Gallio next best followed by McGuinness, Renzi, Cushion and Tincknell. A great even team effort. Big congrats to Kynan Dunn on making his A grade debut. Ressies had a 14-point win in a hard ba le all day. But we stuck to the task and come away with the premiership points. Jordan was outstanding at full back. Scruff won the ruck all day followed by Nat, Macka, Joey Walks and Jack Hateley. The 18s had a big win against an undermanned East with Josh Werchon leading from the front and supported very well by Hainsey, followed by Aussie and Kalan bagging 3 in his second run for the day, Ty Lang and Toddy. Goals also to Wormy (2), Tizza, Blake, Jed, Toddy, Varcs, Tallan, Deegs and Wezza. 16s had an equally big win with Eli bagging 5 goals in a hard running BOG display, Shanksy with 1 goal next, Blake with 3, Mulesy in the ruck, then Max Rorlach. 2 goals also to Toddy and Riley, 1 to Wezza and Deany. Under 14s went down in a great contest with Dylan Sigston leading the way for the boys, Thwaitsey con nuing his good form and Kobe hun ng each contest. Charlie Damhuis is one to watch and sharpshoo ng Campbell Hateley slo ed all 3 goals. 350 GAMES FOR SAINTS VETERAN Steve Duldig. He played his 350th senior game for the Millicent Football Netball Club last Saturday against old foe, East Gambier at McDonald Park, Mt Gambier. He has played 347 A Grade (kicking 89 goals) & 3 Reserves games (kicking 4 goals). Steve is Supported by wife Lisa and their 2 children Pacey and Edie. A well respected footballer around the league and football community, there isn’t too much he hasn’t achieved. A loyal Saints player who always puts his hand up to help around the club even though Lisa and himself are busy running 2 successful businesses. “The General” also Umpires the U/12s Saturday mornings. Steve is the person every coach would love in their side and at their club. Loyal as they come and often rejecting big offers from rival clubs, he stayed loyal and tasted the ultimate success in 2018 winning his first A grade premiership. His favourite past time is rapping late night at the club to Sir Mix-a-Lots "Baby Got Back". Duldig played his first A Grade game for the Saints in 1995 under coach, Craig Skeer while still part of the Under 18 squad. In 1997 he moved to Adelaide to study for three years, where he played for Port Adelaide – he broke his leg & was forced out of action for a period of time. Returning to Millicent in 2000, he played under coach, Andrew Nitschke & quickly settled into the consistent player that saw him named the ‘General’ of the back-line.
& 2016, where he was able to pass on his knowledge & experience to many of the rising juniors at that time. He has finished runner-up best & Fairest four times, while being in the top five 13 times, but is yet to receive the top overall honour. However, this would not worry the passionate team player. Predominantly a key backman, Duldig was often moved forward or on the ball, with his versatility proving a valuable asset for his team. Duldig has represented the SA Country team several times & won the Kitschke Medal for best player. He has been a re g u l a r W B F L & S E Zo n e t e a m representative. In 2017 & 2018, he was the WBFL Interleague coach, which demonstrated how highly he was regarded within the Western Border Football League. He was awarded WBFL Life Membership in 2017. The 3 point loss in the 2010 Grand Final t o We s t G a m b i e r w a s a b i t t e r disappointment, almost as gutted when he fell runner up in the clubs Miss Universe competition but undoubtably the highlight of his career was winning the 2018 premiership with Millicent & playing alongside his brother, Matthew made it even more special. Steve is a legend of the club, and will go down as one of Millicents best ever players to pull on the guernsey. The team celebrated with a hard fought win in his 350th game, congratulations on great career Steve.

KOBE GIBSON
The Millicent Football club would like to nominate Kobe Gibson. He is the captain of the Millicent Under 14s and has been in the best players in the Under 14s each week. He has also filled in for the under 16s and made the best players in this grade as well. The things that really s cks out with Kobe is that he is willing to include all of his team mates when he has the ball and has a team first a tude.
Netballer of the Month
INDI DWYER
Indi Dwyer might be a junior payer at the East Gambier Netball Club but she is already a hugely valuable asset to the Bulldogs. She represents the club at 15 & under A and B level, playing two games most weeks, and is a development player with the A reserve team, training each week and si ng on the bench when required on Saturdays. A tenacious defender, Indi can take a role in the defensive circle or mid court and is a pleasure to coach. This season she has joined the Green Shirt program as an umpire, understanding how important it is to give back to your club, a lesson learned from her hard working family

Casterton-Sandford Blue, White & Red Two in a row here at Island Park and we are back around to the start again, welcome to all North supporters and players, get yourselves a hot coffee, chicken schnitzel and gravy roll and sit back and enjoy the days footy! Last week we found the going a bit tough against the Demons of South Gambier, they put us to the sword, but in all fairness, South have done a great job to get back into the posi on of dominance they now have. South Gambier went through a real rough patch but have worked on their junior development and are now reaping the rewards, the Cats find themselves in the same posi on and I believe in me that we will be back at the top again. Kane Forbes Senior Cats pushed forward early and were a bit unlucky not to have more goals on the board, a vocal Cats crowd kept the boys on the go and we were only 3 points down at quarter me. In the 2nd quarter Gabe Parsons took mark of the year, soaring over not just his opponent but also Sean Smith, Gary Moorcro and Alex Jesaulenko. The rest of the day belonged to the Demons, Ma Killey kept Dozer to just one goal and Pie was named B.O.G. For this effort. Rick Killey, at the opposite end to his brother, made the most of his opportuni es kicking 3 goals.
V
It was pleasing however to see Bevan Wombwell back on the Park and showing his determina on has in no way way diminished. The Under 14s were again the stand out game for the day and if you're able to get down early enough these Cats are the real deal. Jack Wombwell booted 2 goals and the be er players in a great team effort were, Jedd Rhook, Jack Wombwell, Samuel Pa on, Blake Kurzman, Joshua Jones and Kelen Blenkiron. Well hopefully by now you are almost finished your schnitzel roll and coffee, make your way towards the BBQ area, get close to the fire and se le in for a great day of footy, Carn the Cats! Thank-you to all our valued sponsors including Nutrien Ag Solu ons, Taylor Motors, Glenelg Inn, Bendigo Bank, Aston Newman Timbers, Casterton Secondary College and Foodworks. Upcoming Events: Meals at the clubrooms tonight.
The Reserves tried hard but with an ever changing line up, can't find me to gel as a team.

The Tom Hall Trophy has returned to North, with West holding the trophy since we last played for it in 2019. For those who don’t know, North and West shared Vansi art Park un l 1974, when Tom Hall, a well known local sports radio personality of the me, donated the trophy, nicknamed “The Ba le of the Park”, which is played for each season for the first game North and West play at Vansi art Park.
The club was buzzing Saturday night, with a well arranged social func on “The Championships North Tennis Open”. Plenty of good ou its and ordinary table tennis. See our socials for results and photos. In the A grade we fought off a determined West side to win by 21 points a er being down by 17 points at ¾ me. It was good to see the players respond to Jus ns challenge at ¾ me and just goes to show that even if an individual is having a bad day, he can s ll contribute to team success. Best players were Jake Schutz, Bre Shepherdson, Aus n Kitschke, Tom McLennan, Jay Turner and new dad, Nick McInerney. Jus n picked up 5 goals and Sam Stafford 4. The ressies had some more recruits and only needed a few U18s to fill the 22. Welcome to new players, Mathew Ikin and Dean Hamilton. Sam Egan a er his first boxing bout (successful) also took the field for the first me. The scoreboard would suggest that player numbers are not everything and there is a bit of work to do. Best players were Tim Scarth, Toby and Elijah Firth, Dean Hamilton, Tom Madigan and Mathew Ikin.
A bit similar to the reserves, the u18s had their best team on paper for the year, but perhaps their worst result, which will sit with them for a couple of weeks with no game this week. Best players were Elijah Firth, captain Alex Stafford, Henry Gould, Brodie Allen and Seth McRae. The u16s got off to a flyer but couldn’t maintain their form with West ge ng over them by 21 points in the end. A four quarter effort should see them back winning soon. Best players were Darcy Arthurson, Brodie Anderson, Zayne Young, Jonty Collins, Seb Doody and Mackye Baron. The u14s are purring and had another good win. Best players this week were Iowani Coleman, Will Norman, Zac Cordell, Aaron Dally, Kade Allen Luca Roulston. This week we are off to Casterton Sandford, who always give us a tough contest. Lets enjoy their hospitality before heading back to the club for tea and presenta ons. Rosters are out. Make sure you fulfill your duty and if you are unavailable, please try and swap with someone else before simply saying you can’t do it. Club memberships are now due. We have kept the amount at $40 and for that you get a stubby holder and s cker, so no excuses and let’s see if we can break last years membership record. Payment can be made at club, via Team App or by simply seeing Andrew or Mardi Whan. Thanks to our major sponsors, Stuckey Electrical Contractors and KFC. Go Tigers.
U/12 Reports Under 12E - Danny Vinko Great game by the U12E's this week. This group are improving every week, and are enjoying their me out on the ground. Best players this week were William Gannon, Harry Cram, Cohen Minter and Thomas Bryan. Looking forward to what next week brings. Go Tigers Under 12D - Stacey Mullens Under 12D's took on the West side this week in a great contest that really highlighted the skills and drills they've been working on at training, with a lot of shepherding, tackling and team work on show. It was also very pleasing to see a few kick, mark, kick, mark passages of play and one even resul ng in a goal, showing the kids are ge ng more confident in their skills to pick out a target and get the ball to them! Also thanks to West for lending us a few players to even up the teams, great game guys! Under 12C - John Stafford & Sco Montgomery On a deligh ul Mother’s Day (happy Mother’s Day to all mums) the 12c’s took on West Gambier. The boys showed again that the future is bright at ger land, displaying a good brand of team footy. There were a number of passages where the boys hit targets and took some great marks. Best players for the day were Eddie ‘every where’ Buckland, Zayden Light, Thomas Norman and Hardie Stafford.
Under 12B - Adrian Flowers The U12B’s game dedicated to all of our wonderful hardworking Mum’s at North and West Gambier was a very fast moving and well contested hit out by both sides. From the get go and first bounce it was evident that both sides were keen to get control and put the ball between the big s cks. The first quarter displayed an evenly matched contest with plenty of ball being had by both teams. As the second quarter began the Tigers midfield being led by captain for the day Kobe ‘Rolly’ Roulstone started to gain the upper hand. North began to win the clearances, giving forward line players such as James Bryant and crumbing expert Kane Harris first use of the ball and shots at goal. During the main break all players were up and about smiling but very focussed on the coaches instruc ons to use the space at Vansi art Park with plenty of run and accurate passes by hand and foot. The instruc ons by West must have been similar, the beginning of the third quarter immediately put the North back line under pressure, but in one of his best games ever the General Hayden ‘Ha y’ Hunter dominated by reading the play from centre half back and intercep ng the ball on mul ple occasions. The a acking play then became the theme for the Tigers game from that point on. The Tigers con nued to dominate right through to the final siren, with great ball use and team play. It was very encouraging to see the development of individual players Jacob Vinko ge ng his hands on the
ball in his first year and the experienced Jack Dyson standing up with some strong marking on more than one occasion. The game was without doubt the best team performance so far this year, respect for each other, the opposi on team, the umpires and officials which is the number one team rule for the Tigers was displayed by both sides. Great to hear the team echoing the club theme song out of the rooms and super proud to see all players having fun playing our great game. Thanks Team…………..Tigers Together….. Under 12A - Jason Baron On Sunday against West the under 12A'[s played their best team game for the season. Their ball movement was fantas c with a willingness to use handball from marks and free kicks being a highlight. With this run on style of play they were able to break the lines and cause an overlap on numerous occasions. The boys kicked 7 goals for the days, 4 of which were into a strong breeze. Testament to their work ethic, skill level and ability to execute the game plan. It is pleasing to see aspects of training along with our team values being applied to games on such a consistent basis. Awards winners for the day were Fletcher Mobbs, Charlie Wurst, Sam Baron, Laurence Te Whai , Tyler Fiegert and Samuel Swiggs.

WITH Some just can’t get enough of football and former Casterton Sandford and South Gambier star Justin Munro still enters field almost three decades after his A Grade debut. Although his playing days are over, Munro has played an integral role in South Gambier’s rise up the A Grade ladder this year. His role as the bench coach allows him to not only stay involved in the game he loves, but also helps keep a close eye on son Colby and daughter Lara in the club’s top football netball teams. Munro said he loves staying around the group and helping coach Brayden Kain where possible. “It has been exciting and I just step in and help where I can,” he said. “Brayden has done a fantastic job this year and it was the best preseason I have seen at South. “Sometimes we have to make decisions from the bench, but Brayden has the final say.” Munro was “brainwashed” into a footballloving family as a youngster and the grounding paid off as he rapidly rose up the ranks. The midfield prodigy stoodout in Coleraine’s junior system and found himself running out with the A Grade side at the tender age of 16. However, Munro recalled his debut could have occurred even earlier. “Coleraine actually wanted me to play a few games the year before (the debut) but I was pretty lightly built and my father didn’t agree with it,” he said. “It was a fast-learning curve coming into senior footy, but it was one I eventually adjusted to. “I took it as just another challenge and met it head on.” Being a Casterton High School student, Munro jumped to Island Park and made an immediate impression for the Western Border rival.
ex AFL players at Kardinia Park as a 17-year-old. Just a few months later, Munro represented the Cats on grand final day which was a hair-raising experience. “It was a bit of culture shock when I went to Casterton going from the bottom of the ladder to the top,” he said. “The grand final was the biggest game I ever played in. “I was very nervous and a bit overawed by the whole occasion which is a bit natural. “We hung in there all game despite not playing our best footy, but South was too good.” Munro’s ascendancy continued the following year when he made a “last-ditch effort” to keep the AFL dream alive by moving up to Adelaide to play in the SANFL. Playing for North Adelaide, the youngster rubbed shoulders greats such as Darel Hart, Shaun Wellman, Josh Francou and Damian Squire. After kicking four goals on a dream debut in the “unbelievably quick” league, Munro caught the attention of AFL talent scouts. Geelong representatives travelled to a couple of his Roosters’ games, while family members John and Barry Gill had previously played for Carlton. However, the Brisbane Bears were the most interested club and Munro said he was agonisingly close to the dream. “The Brisbane Bears rang me a day or two before the draft and said they were definitely going to take me and asked would I be interested in moving to Brisbane?” “I obviously said yes and went to school that day thinking I was bulletproof full of excitement. “But as the draft turned out I did not get picked so it all turned to disappointment. “They did contact me and I think they had around nine picks and I was at number 11, so if some other clubs had picked up their first choice players, I may have been given a chance.” Sadly Munro’s AFL career wasn’t to be, so he escaped the hustle and bustle of the city after two years at North Adelaide and returned to Casterton in 1995.
During his first f u l l season of A Grade in 1992, the onballer was so good he was Having accepted a job in Mount Gambier in the selected in the interleague team same industry he works in today, he spent the and got the chance to play with next season helping South Gambier to
MUNRO premiership success. After another call from Allan “grumpy” Smith, Munro went north up to Queensland and won another grand final for Noosa. At the turn of the century, he returned home to the “Cattery” and took over the leadership duties. But at just 25 years of age, Munro said he was reluctant to take be a playing coach. “I had always pictured myself coaching around 30, so it was probably five years too early and I wasn’t that keen, but the club sold me on the idea,” he said. “We made a preliminary final in the first year, but I found it hard playing in the midfield and trying to coach at the same time, so it was a steep learning curve.” Despite the struggle, Munro coached a young man by the name of Max Rooke, who was at the very start of his journey to AFL premiership stardom. With a few years of leadership experience under his belt, Munro took over the coaching duties at Coleraine. The decision to finish his career at the same club where it all started paid off handsomely with five flags in six years. Munro said the fairytale finish was always something on his mind, but admitted committing to retirement was a struggle. “It was always something I had in my mind,” he said. “My parents still have a farm there and I always said I would come back one day. “Glen Fry put the pressure on me and I suppose we created a bit of a special buzz. “It was extremely hard to hang up the boots because I retired about three times. “I was not good at watching and got itchy feet, but my wife might have burnt the boots after my last game which told me it was definitely over.” Munro has always been a passionate Sydney Swans supporter and gets excitement every single AFL Grand Final day and would love to witness Angus Young and ACDC live one more time.

MATCH REPORTS EAST GAMBIER V MILLICENT It was only a ma er of me and Millicent’s stunning undefeated run has ended at the hands of East Gambier. The rampaging Bulldogs started the match favourites against the reigning premiers – results in the first four rounds and the new look for the defending champions shaping that view. Not since round 14, 2018 when West Gambier secured a 10 goal victory had the Saints suffered a loss and the weekend’s highly an cipated round five clash was always going to be a classic. The ba le of the top two did not disappoint, with Millicent holding a two goal lead at quarter me before East worked its way to a two goal half me buffer. That lead was extended in a hard fought third term and sat at seven before the final quarter where East conjured significantly more scoring shots to take the premiership points with a 12 goal final margin. Millicent came into the match with a plan for the star studded East line-up but four minutes in, those plans had to be revamped when tall goal shooter Tabatha Sanderson dislocated a finger. East captain Tarsh McCallum put her physio skills to work and put it back in for the opposi on’s spearhead but Sanderson was unable to con nue and headed for x-rays. It saw Lucy Denton move to goal shooter, Por a McRae come onto the goal keeper role, Hannah Nitschke out to goal defence, Kimmi Tincknell to the defensive wing and Lisa Duldig back to centre. Despite the disrup on, Millicent did enjoy the quarter me lead but that was the last me in the match they did lead as accurate shoo ng from both teams ensured the match was an arm wrestle. Denton was impressive in goal shooter for the Saints and she scored 25 from 27 in the final three quarters, showing great composure in the heat of ba le. But East was able to create more scoring opportuni es and with Emily Hunter controlling the mid court and Tyne Bosko ge ng some important touches at wing defence, the Bulldogs kept building their lead gradually. The accurate finishing of Amryn Bosko and Tenille Gray was also a factor, especially in the third quarter where their 17 from 17 was part of turning the match in the home side’s favour. Kimmi Tincknell was best for Millicent, alongside Denton, with her ability to create turnover ball and also help transi on the ball was pivotal. The impressive victory from the Bulldogs now sets them up very much as the hunted – the new benchmark of the compe on. NORTH GAMBIER V WEST GAMBIER Another clash that was expected to be ght and absolutely delivered. Both North Gambier and West Gambier are looking to
develop new look line-ups and have already suffered from the inconsistency that can bring – West struggling to defeat South Gambier and then taking it up to Millicent and North also taking it up to Millicent but being no match for East Gambier. The first three quarters were the goal for goal ba le an cipated as the tall mber at either end – Tigers shooter Caroline Davey and West shooter Sarah Ri er were strong targets and accurate finishers, ensuring almost every scoring opportunity that came their way ended up on the scoreboard. Davey was coming off a 100 percent shoo ng performance against Millicent, converted 39 from 44, including no misses in the second half and while she was clearly the Tigers’ best, young defender Jade Ri er never gave up the fight and was one of the Roos most impressive performers in the victory. At the other end, Sarah Ri er showed why she is considered high end talent in the halls of power at Netball SA, ne ng 46 from 49 in a best on court performance. North led by one at the first break, before West put the foot down to take a three goal lead into the half. By three quarter me the stage was sent for an epic finish with the scores ed at 50 apiece, built on the back of some cri cal turnover ball from the North defence and a 100 percent shoo ng performance from Davey and Ellen Brown, who ne ed 20 from 20 to bring North back into the contest. No one could have predicted how the final quarter panned out. Jade Ri er got some cri cal touches, restric ng poten al match winner Davey to four a empts, and along with Amy Cram created enough turnover ball to give West the edge in supply as Tara Bryant, Carlee Ransom and Lisa McGregor were precise with ball in hand, showing pa ence un l they could find Sarah Ri er in space. It saw West dominate the scoreboard to take the quarter 16-8 and secure the win. Brown’s work rate was excep onal out the front of Davey, while Mel Renko had a great ba le with McGregor. CASTERTON SANDFORD V SOUTH GAMBIER It was just not the Cats day as they hosted South Gambier in a match where both sides were gunning for a breakthrough victory in 2021. The opening quarter was ght as the defenders from both teams made finding the goalers in space a difficult task and in the end it was the weight of supply that saw South enjoy a four goal quarter me lead. South had 25 scoring shots to 14, with the height of shooter Grace Edwards coming into play as she dominated the rebounding duels and earned the chance for second and third opportuni es to score. The second quarter was also ght as Cats defender Caeleigh Humphries started to win some important ball and Scarle Jarrad’s strong driving saw Casterton
DENTON’S
Sandford con nue to match it with the Demons. The defensive pressure of Renee Pluckhahn, Brandi Bouchier and Ellie Bouchier was able to again restrict the scoring opportuni es and were it not for the accuracy of Paige Murrell (Cameron) in the opening half, ne ng 17 from 19, the Cats might have trailed by more. The Demons were again finding plenty of avenues to goal thanks to the strong driving of Imogen Walker and Alyssa Duncan who hit the circle hard and fed Lara Munro and Edwards with precision and by half me the difference was seven. The stage was set for an epic second half with both teams swinging the changes in a bid to gain the edge. Cats coach Tori Broomby moved into goals alongside Murrell, while Humphries and Foster swapped defensive roles and Madison Mutch moved to the a acking wing, while for the Demons, Olivia Patzel entered the game at centre and Hannah Witherow took the defensive wing. The Cats got the be er of the start in the second half but then Humphries fell awkwardly, injuring her wrist and forced from the court – the good news for the Cats is she has been cleared of structural or ligament damage and might only be sidelined for a couple of weeks. No sooner had Humphries been forced from the court than Murrell, who was clearly impeded by a back issue, struggled to three quarter me but then also had to vacate, with Haylee Rhook taking the wing a ack bib with Charlo e Rice going back into goals. It was clearly unse ling for the home side but the shining light was the debut of Ebany Jarrad who took the goal keeper bib in the last quarter and while Edwards s ll secured plenty of scoring opportuni es, Jarrad took some rebounds, got some important touches and took a handful of clean intercep ons in aa debut that will comfort the Cats that they can cover Humphries un l her wrist heals. The margin was 19 at the last change and 30 at the end, with a lack of accuracy in the final quarter from the Cats seeing the score blow out arguably beyond what the general play suggested. South’s hard earned victory was built on the defensive pressure of Pluckhahn and Bouchier and the strong posi oning of Edwards, while having Walker back in the line-up gave the a ack line speed, strength and smarts. Lara Munro also con nues to impress. Jarrad was the best for the Cats as she ran hard all day having to offer and re-offer me and me again as she controlled the mid court, while Foster, Jarrad and Humphries – Casterton Sandford’s trio of young defenders – showed enough to provide light at the end of the tunnel for the Cats. Murrell also showed her usual smarts and reliability and Broomby will be hoping her back recovers in me for this weekend.
ROUND 5 PREVIEWS SOUTH GAMBIER V MILLICENT South Gambier is coming off a breakthrough win over an injury hit Casterton Sandford but it faces a reigning premier coming off its first loss since Round 14, 2018, and the Saints will be looking to finetune and bounce back strongly. Tabatha Sanderson could well be sidelined a er disloca ng her finger early in round five but Millicent has an embarrassment of riches in the shoo ng department and last weekend Lucy Denton did not miss a beat when taking the goal shooter bib to replace Sanderson. The Demons will be without their university students for this round but will see this as another opportunity for their young guns, Alyssa Duncan, Ellie Bouchier and Lara Munro to con nue their educa on and there is nothing be er than learning up against the best. Grace Edwards' height in the Demons shoo ng circle will test Hannah Nitschke and Kimmi Tincknell and Por a McRae would well earn another gig in the goal keeper spot, having done a stellar job in the past two weeks. In last week's win it was Brandi Bouchier and Renee Pluckhahn se ng up the win with their ght defensive work and they will need to be on song again if the damage to the scoreboard is to be limited. Millicent will bounce back and probably empha cally.
Emily Hunter
CASTERTON SANDFORD V NORTH GAMBIER The Cats must wonder what they have done wrong with Meg Fennell, Caeleigh Humphries and perhaps even Paige Murrell on the injury list. Fennell and Humphries rob the Cats of defensive talent and Murrell is the wise head in the shoo ng circle but the Cats are tenacious and always fight out every game. Ebany Jarrad debuted in defence for Casterton Sandford and showed great promise, contes ng in the air, working the ground hard and also reading the play to secure a couple of stunning intercep ons and Claire Foster is on the improve every week as she adapts to life as a senior defender. More responsibility will fall to coach Tori Broomby and skipper Scarle Jarrad as they look to encourage their younger team mates but it will be a tough ask for the Cats with North coming off a disappoin ng last quarter fade out against West. Maddie Whaites and Mel Renko are forming a tough defensive combina on for North, while Brianna Walters adds class to the mid court and Caroline Davey does not get any shorter and is coming off a 100 percent shoo ng performance in round four and only a couple of misses in the last round. North will secure a strong victory as the Cats con nue to back their young talent.

WEST GAMBIER V EAST GAMBIER Clearly the match of the round and a chance for West Gambier to see how they have developed over the previous five rounds. East Gambier enters the clash clear favourites, especially a er ge ng through a ght contest with the reigning premiers Millicent last round, powering through the last quarter to a 12 goal victory. It was basically a 30 goal margin in round one but West did have personnel missing and the new look line-up was yet to gel. Last weekend's eight goal victory over North Gambier, another last quarter blitz similar to the Bulldogs over the Saints, would have filled the Roos with confidence, especially with the youngsters leading the way – Jade Ri er in defence and Sarah Ri er in goals. It is hard to mount a case for the Roos to make up that deficit with East coach Emily Hunter controlling the mid court, Lisa Fyfe, Bo Creek and Tyne Bosko defending as a unit and not allowing teams me or space, and Tarsh McCallum delivering the ball with precision to accurate goalers Tenille Gray and Amryn Bosko but West coach Lisa McGregor would be looking for a significant improvement in the scoreline. If Sarah Ri er can con nue her strong form in goals, Tara Bryant match it with the hard running Hunter and Amy Cram and Jade Ri er work in tandem to deny easy ball for the East goalers, the deficit should be reduced.

West Gambier Blue & Red Round 5 saw our Roo's head over to Tiger land to take on North Gambier. Our Junior girls were able to secure wins in our Under 11's, 13B's, 15B's who got their first win for the season (well done girls) and Under 17's. Although all our Senior girls gave it everything they had we were only able to secure the win in the A Grade game and what a game it was, the score was pre y much goal for goal with the 3rd quarter score being 50 all. West were able to keep pushing in the final quarter to come away with the win.

Saturday was always going to be a big game for the East A-grade girls against Millicent. As expected, they really put the pressure on early which resulted in Millicent leading by two goals at quarter me. Credit to East, who worked hard all game to maintain possession of the ball and score off any turnovers which resulted in a 12 goal win. East know it’s s ll early days and have the whole season ahead of them. They will need to con nue to build as a team and prepare for another two tough games coming up against West and North. Millicent have always been a very strong and compe ve side and know how to work the ball down the court. With 2 of our main players away this week we brought up and had Isabella Lamb and Kate Dempsey hit the court for us. Lauren Harvey con nued to be a standout in the mid court un l injuring her leg. Defence had an extremely tough gig and played so well together, with Michelle Richardson stepping up and being a senior voice, and Erin Hudson playing great tough defence when hi ng the court. With the amount of changes made we all adapted to playing those posi ons, Teagan Gray and Casey Horrigan worked well together in the circle, the girls just seemed to lose hope and give up in the last half which was very disappoin ng. Moving onto next week, we need to improve on working hard ll the end and con nue to play like we have been the first 4 rounds. Ma lda Lamb and Ambah Beveridge had to work hard to find space in the circle and be in good scoring posi on. Indi Dwyer and Tonique Burford worked well as a defensive team to try to curb the influence of a tall accurate shooter. Both girls contested balls in the goal circle and were able to take many intercepts. Tahlia Geraghty, Jordan Davis and Keelie Neilson had to work hard to transi on these intercepts to the a ack. Going to be a tough compe on this year in B grade, the girls started strong and worked hard to gave each other lots of posi ve a tude. Millicent are undefeated and it shows why, very strong. Nicola Smith and Gemma Hunt played outstanding in the goal circle, with the help of feeding from Zoee Cornolo and Becky Grosser. Defence had their work cut out for them, with goalies who were strong in holding. But Amy Feast and Erin Hudson did their all to try and get turn over and rebounds. Megan Wilson got hands to ball, before moving down to GA, as Gemma went down with injury. Issy Whaites gave lots of defensive pressure over the ball. Good effort girls!

South Gambier Red & White Well done to the A Grade team and especially coach Belinda Scanlon. The Cats had some injuries both before and during the match but the girls made sure the result was never in doubt a er half me as everyone played their part. Belinda has worked so hard at this club across all age groups but especially in her role as A Grade coach and this is reward for effort. Having Imi back was a bonus and she controlled the a ack line with her drive, strong takes and precise feeding. Alyssa was really controlled through the mid court and took some important defensive intercepts. Grace was strong under the post, Lara con nues to impress and finishes from long range and Hannah was tenacious at wing defence and important in the transi on from defence to a ack. Olivia Patzel played her second game for the club and was all class in centre and Ellie con nues to show she is comfortable at this level and got a number of important touches. The win was arguably set up by Brandi and Renee who are fast becoming a formidable defensive combina on and they made life really tough for the Cats a ack line, crea ng plenty of turnovers. To win by 30 was a great effort from an

The A Reserve had a great first half with Mykaela ge ng some important touches, Milly finding good space and finishing well, Megan showing she is ready for senior netball and Kaitlyn running hard all day. Tori was also cri cal with her ability to get her hands to balls and Mel was as ght checking as ever. Tully did her job well both on the a acking wing and at goal keeper, while Mel hit the circle hard and found the goalers in space. B Grade had another good win in a close contest, C Grade dominated, as did the 17 & under gals, while the 15 & Under A fell agonisingly close a n d t h e 1 5 & U n d e r B ga l s welcomed Gracie Dalton to the line-up and she had a great second half. The 13 & Under A had a great win and the 13 & Under B not only passed 10 goals they hit 20 and only lost by four in a game where everyone played so well, with Zara, Halle and Lily leading the way. The 11 & under gals played in the worst of condi ons with all the girls con nuing to improve...
