SEMI FINALS PREVIEW September and spring have arrived which means one thing, footy finals and the big names in the Western Border world are ready to put their bodies on the line as the stakes rise to new heights. After a minor-round season elongated by numerous COVID-19 interruptions, the stage is set for a gripping finals series and it all kicks off with double dose of action this weekend. Super Saturday witnesses the top two fight it out for a spot in decider before a knockout contest at McLaughlin Park the following day. South Gambier is leading the race after a dashing minor premiership, while it is hard to split Millicent and East Gambier sitting hot on the Demons’ tail ready to pounce on any opportunity. Recent form suggests North Gambier has a steep mountain to climb, but never underestimate the yellow and black in finals football. South Gambier v Millicent The high-profile action will ignite with the opening semi-final at Vansittart Park where a ticket to ride straight into the grand final is there for the taking. The doorway to the decider was scheduled to be held at Casterton’s Island Park, but due to the Victorian lockdown, teams will now venture into the heart of Mount Gambier at Vansittart Park. South Gambier and Millicent are the big boys fighting it out after proving they are the class of the competition. Both sides have defeated all comers over the course of the season and at their best can show why they have what it takes to go all the way. The Demons have been the most consistent

thanks to their supreme start to the season winning 12 of their first 13 games. Brayden Kain has been an inspirational playing coach letting his actions do the talking in the forward line with a team-best 35 goals. The experienced Kym Eagleson forms the other key part of the forward line, while Brodie Foster hopes to find his best having only kicked four goals in three games since his return from injury. Rustiness could be South’s biggest concern after the side was forced to miss its final round clash against Casterton Sandford due to the Victorian lockdown. Despite the Demons’ dominant 2021 campaign, the side is not exactly charging into finals at full steam after rotating some players and losing heavily to East Gambier. However, they found some diamonds in the rough in the form of Mitch and Noah Sims, who showed they have what it takes to perform at the top level. Key midfields Scott Enderl and Brett O’Neil have not been at 100% fitness lately, but expect them and the entire South squad to rise for the big game. The Demons should be raring to go following an unexpected week off after last Saturday’s Casterton Sandford clash was called off due to the Victorian lockdown. Following one of the most crushing runs to the minor premiership in recent memory, South wants to remind the competition why it is the team to beat. On the other hand, Millicent enters September on cloud nine after knocking over chief-rival East Gambier away from home to seal the second spot in a finals dress rehearsal. The Saints have won six of their last seven games including the previous Demons clash

where their fierce tackling pressure s u ffo cate d t h e ladder leaders. Clint Gallio’s men will look to implement a similar strategy to head into a memorable decider, especially if the forecast showers arrive. Millicent did not win a game in 2019 and skipped 2020 to be primed for this season where recruits Gene Robinson, Tom Renzi, Jacob Carger (who should overcome a calf complaint) and the returning Gallio have played key roles. Robinson is obviously the man to watch in the forward line fresh from kicking 100 goals in the season, while young guns such as Frazer Bradley and Zac McGuinness add plenty of flare. Gallio said he will lead a very driven group into battle. “Obviously from now on you need to win every game of football and we will do everything we can to do that,” he said. “We will look at what we have and have not done well in previous games against South and try to find a happy medium, so we can get the best edge to win. “Our pressure is one of our strengths, so if we can get that going that will help us. “A few boys are battered and bruised, but finals are an exciting time and we will recover well. “To think where we have come from in 2019 is a credit to everyone, but the job is only half done.” The Demons hold the slight edge being undefeated at Vansittart Park, while the Saints lost their only fixture at the venue. But both sides play attractive football, so expect a thoroughly entertaining game which could go either way.
SEMI FINALS PREVIEW East Gambier v North Gambier The traditional rivalry of East and North Gambier will be as fierce as ever when they fight for survival in Sunday’s semi-final at Millicent’s McLaughlin Park. The Bulldogs hold the aces having won all three battles with the Tigers in 2021 including a 79-point thumping in the previous encounter. Despite missing out on the double chance to Millicent at home on Saturday, East has been playing the better football of late. Many candidates from the youth of Keenan Dwyer to the experience of Matt McCallum and co-coaches Matt Willson and Jayden Eldridge have given the side plenty of potency in the midfield. The Bulldogs also have a variety of scoring options from the seasoned Matthew Scanlon to the unpredictable Giancarlo Cooper. One area of concern is the fitness of Jake Harrap, who has missed the last three games due to injury. The Tigers have suffered a couple of stumbles ahead of finals after losing their previous three fixtures. However, with five of the last eight WBFL premiership cups in the trophy cabinet, never write North off in September. Two of the recent defeats were against higher-placed sides, but last week a departing West Gambier proved too strong across four quarters. North is sweating on the fitness of cocaptains Nick McInerney and Brad Stafford, who have struggled to get on the park, but provide plenty of drive in the middle when they do. Journeyman Scott Flett is also under a fitness cloud and will leave another big hole in the stoppages, but the Tigers are confident they have the depth to challenge.

So, let's hope play an elimination final at home on the Sunday. All the best to he has a big finals series. Darren and the lads. The A grade lads had a 24-point victory to cement 2nd spot on the ladder and a semi-final against South. Millicent with the aid of a strong breeze got off to a quick start when Gene was hit lace out with barely a minute on the clock. He kicked truly to bring up the 100. East put on 4 goals to take a slight 5-point lead into quarter time. Second quarter was a tight and even affair. Going goal for goal until Millicent broke the drought and put on 2 goals in a row to take a slender 1-point lead in at half time. 3rd Quarter the ball was pinging from one end to the other with both defences standing up strong. Another tight quarter that went goal for goal but Millicent come away with an 8-point lead. Last quarter Millicent gained the upper hand kicking 3 goals to 1 to run out winners by 24 points. Billy Shanks in defence was solid as was Kade Bradley, stopping many forward entry's and marking and cleaning up everything that came his way. Finn in fine form won the ruck duals and was handy around the ground, Frazer Bradley rarely plays a bad game. Sam Willis had the ball on a string and Zac McGuinness was another that gave his opponent nothing in defence. Best players Shanks, Grimes, McGuiness, Kade, Frazer and Willis
U/14s finished fourth and are also playing the elimination final on Sunday. Coached by Wormy, let's hope they can have a win and we wish them all the best! Similarly in the same position is the Netball with all sides making the finals. With the A reserve, B grade, C grade, u17’s, U15A's and u13’s all finishing top of the ladder. A grade finished 2nd and they will all play on Saturday at North for a spot in the Grand final. Our U15B's finished 3rd and will play Sunday at home in the elimination final. An incredible effort to have 6 sides finish top Wishing all netballers the best. It's an amazing effort to have all footy and netball sides make finals, it's testament to all the coaches, the Millicent Football Netball club committee and volunteers that put in the hard work to try make this club a success. Let's go Saints!! Making my mark….

Our last minor round followed on Saturday, hosting West. Injuries took their toll in the lead up in some grades and we picked up some more injuries on the day. Unfortunately, one of our A grade debutants, Brodie Allen, broke his collar bone which finish what was an outstanding season. We didn’t have our kicking boots on the first quarter and then couldn’t get going, relying on Jake Schutz to kick 3 of our goals. West Gambier Blue & Red Well what a cracker day it was with no rain for the day and some sun shine. The under 14s continued on with the great form and beat a very good north side. We started off slow but hit our straps in the second Quarter to take the lead and never looked back. They have continued the great football they have shown over the last month to run out 6 goal winners. Tate Hammond was named BOG, followed by the speedster Seth Fraser, Toby Stutley, Harvey Croker and Deacon Gilbert. Solid hit out against North who pushed us to the end for another win to continue the great start of the day. It was a great hit out for the boys before they hit finals this week. Again we started slow and finally hit our best late in the game to over run North in the end. Alex commenced playing at East in 2010 in the 12 & Under team. In 2013 & 2014, she started her senior career in B & C Grade as well as still playing juniors. A smart thinking defender, confusing space and reading the play, predicting the opposition’s movements and creating turnovers. Not only is she a brilliant defender, she is a committed Club person. In 2019, she was awarded East’s Club Person of the Year and this year received her C Grade badge in umpiring. I am lucky to be her friend and have watched her grow into an incredible woman. I am so so proud of all of her achievements on and off the court.

MATCH REPORTS EAST GAMBIER V MILLCENT As a second semi final dress rehearsal this match was a cracker and set the scene for another epic ba le this Saturday. East was gunning for the perfect minor round but losing Tarsh McCallum before the first whistle and with star defender Lisa Fyfe suffering a foot injury certainly added to the challenge. McCallum returned to the court a er a long lay off last round and got through the match unscathed but the long term injury flared again during the week and in the end she sidelined herself in a bid to recover in me for the finals. Fyfe suffered her injury setback halfway through the first quarter but remained on court for the dura on of the match, moving back to goal keeper for the final three quarters of the contest and s ll securing as handful of her spectacular intercep ons whenever the Saints looked to go cross court and deep. For the vast majority of the clash it was a goal for goal ba le with both sides having to work hard to secure scoring opportuni es. Defensive intensity was at an all me high and pa ence was the key and both sides refused to give an inch. Millicent led by one at the first break and the margin was s ll one at the main break. Ge ng the ball into the respec ve shoo ng circles was tough but once it was in the hands of the goalers the finishing was accurate. Millicent worked its way to a six goal lead halfway through the third but by three quarter me, East was right back in striking distance, trailing by two. The Saints held a three goal lead for much of the last before the Bulldogs surged again but eventually ran out of me as the final whistle saw them on the wrong side of the scoreboard by just one goal. Every ba le on court was rive ng. Young guns Amryn Bosko and Por a McRae both had their moments. Bosko worked hard out of the circle to open up the space and her finishing was superb, while McRae chased down some cri cal intercep ons and rebounded strongly. Tenille Gray was at her hard working best and ne ed 36 of East's 43 goals,
missing only six goals for the en rety of the high pressure contest, while her opponent Hannah Nitschke just kept ge ng to the right posi ons and if the feed was slightly off she made sure she got a hand on it. Kate Dempsey was composed and con nually provided her team mates with a safe op on in transi on, while Lisa Duldig denied easy access to the circle's edge and led the defensive end with her strong direc on. Hard running and defensive intensity was the name of the game as Emily Hunter and Lucy Denton went head to head with both doing the lion's share of their teams delivery into the circle but also being disrup ve defensively to pick up some pivotal turnover ball. Paige Nitschke and Tyne Bosko had one of the ba les of the match. Bosko was at her ght checking best but Nitschke never stopped working and her connec on with Demi Verbena in par cular set up many a scoring opportunity. Verbena was the architect of the Saints a ack line using her front cuts and stellar ming to great effect and she con nually offloaded to Sanderson, while Bo Creek, who took the job of stopping Verbena from quarter me, did some great work over the shot and was also a key link player. Sanderson was strong under the post, conver ng 47 from 51 and she also took some cri cal rebounds and while Fyfe was clearly hampered, she s ll flew for some wonderful intercepts and was able to create doubt at me in the feeders' heads which produced errors and turnover opportuni es. This was a match that could have gone either way and can only whet the appe te for this weekend, with McCallum and Fyfe's fitness a key to the final outcome. NORTH GAMBIER V WEST GAMBIER As a precursor to this week's knockout semi final between the same two sides, this was a great contest and while West Gambier secured the 10 goal win, giving them two wins out of three over the Tigers, North will know they are s ll a live chance this weekend. West Gambier entered the clash off a haphazard month, where they missed a
match and did not play a contender in the past couple of weeks but the Roos started as strongly as the Tigers, who were coming off a great finetune against the Saints. North shooter Caroline loomed large in the opening quarter, securing plenty of ball and ne ng 12 straight as the Tigers took a one goal lead into the first break. Hard running mid courter Mel Renko was finding great connec on with the star shooter while at the other end, it was much harder work to get through the Tigers defence but with Lisa McGregor and Sarah Ri er sharing the shoo ng du es, the Roos stayed in touch. The second quarter was all about Sarah Ri er. The young shooter caught fire in a major way, demanding the ball at every opportunity and conver ng 18 from 19 as West powered to a seven goal half me lead. Tara Bryant, Carlee Ransom and McGregor all just worked together to get the ball to Ri er and she didn't disappoint, while at the other end, the Roos defence made life tougher for the Tigers, with Jade Ri er and Amy Cram limi ng the scoring opportuni es to help inflict the scoreboard damage. The Tigers weren't done for though, and the a ack line got back on top in the third with North conver ng 16 from 19 to claw their way back to a five goal three quarter me deficit. The defensive end also shut down me and space and worked hard for some cri cal turnover ball through their tenacity and willingness to contest. It was all about Sarah Ri er again in the last, though, as the young shooter again became the focal point for the Roos, conver ng 16 from 19 as West took control and secured the 10 goal victory. Again it was a dominant quarter set up by the defensive end of the Roos, led by 350 game milestone defender Cram, and then the connec on with Bryant, Ransom and McGregor, ensured Sarah Ri er had ample scoring opportuni es to be the difference. S ll covering the loss of Lauren Buddle, North will be be er for a hit out with their new look line-up and the stage is set for an epic 1st semi final on Sunday at Millicent.

MILLICENT
East Gambier Red & Black
It was only last week when Millicent finally got the better of East Gambier, albeit by one goal. It was the Bulldogs first loss for the season in what was a high quality contest that has whet the appetite for the 2021 finals series. East was missing Tarsh McCallum last weekend and there is also an injury cloud over defender Lisa Fyfe, who finished the match but did suffer a foot injury, and coach Emily Hunter will be sweating on her team mates' fitness. There is no reason not to expect another goal for goal, tense battle this weekend.
V
the defensive wing Tyne Bosko never gives an inch and she is also key to the Bulldogs' transition from defence to attack.
The good news is their team mates are high quality. Amryn Bosko has had a stunning debut season in A Grade at goal shooter, showcasing her smarts and composure in every match, while the other end, Bo Creek is a tenacious defender, strong in the air and brilliant with her pressure over the shot.
The Saints are also a star studded line-up that have developed over 2021 as the reigning premiers got used t o l i fe w i t h o u t D o n n a Denton and Hayley Dunn. Portia McRae has been a revelation at goal keeper for the Saints and her combination with Hannah Nitschke looked to have really clicked in the weekend's victory.

At the other end, Tabatha Sanderson is strong under

Paige Nitschke has grown into the wing attack role, while Lucy Denton and Lisa Duldig regularly swap roles and are as effective defensively as they are in offence. West's Tara Bryant and Mel Renko will face off in the middle of the court in what will be a pivotal battle, while the match up that will see West coach Lisa McGregor and North defender Noni McConnell spending the match side by side will be one that absolutely decides the outcome with McGregor so pivotal to the ball movement of the Roos. North Gambier shooter Caroline Davey will play a vital role in today’s result

Both teams will be spending this week sorting

Of course the respective goal attacks cannot be ignored either, given they are both creative, smart players, with Sophie Ellis connecting well with Janssen and doing a mountain of work outside the circle as well and Alycia Close also safe with ball in hand and blessed with

East Gambier and West Gambier are facing off in the A Reserve first semi final with plenty of talent on show as they both battle to live on in the 2021 season. This is new territory for Millicent as it has been some years since they have featured in the B Grade finals and they are not just featuring but have been the benchmark all season. The B Grade final rests mainly on the two State Governments but if Casterton Sandford can hit the court on Sunday they will start overwhelming favourite over North Gambier.
South Gambier
It will be the team that looks after the ball the best that claims that first grand final spot, especially when both have strong defensive lines that will certainly create turnover balls – Millicent's Nicole Domaschenz and South's Charlene Riley have got that job done at the defensive end all season.

Both teams are also versatile with players that can take on roles in different areas of the court. The season results saw Millicent win the first two contests comfortably before South took their last clash by one. This one will also be tight with the Saints advancing.

The Cats have plenty of quality and are the reigning premiers in this grade, dating back to 2019 of course and they have won all three clashes this season with the margin increasing every time.
With Lorree Lane in the mid court, Annalee McKinnon in defence and then the smarts of Lauren Cleary and Kerri Harvey in the attacking third and Eilidh Murray anchoring the shooting circle, the Cats have no weaknesses and a wealth of experience.
North Gambier Yellow & Black
North Gambier has Sarah Dally in form, along with Ash Whan, Elyse Willoughby and Keeley Quinn and this Tigers line-up is tenacious but the Cats should have the better of the scoreboard if the match goes ahead.

A Grade North 55 vs West 65 This was not the result we were looking for heading into finals. However, we know we were far from our best. We will regroup and bring our best game to finals. Best players: Noni McConnell (Federal Hotel) and Mel Renko (Fasta Pasta) A Reserve North 40 vs West 34 The game started evenly and North were finding it hard to convert turnovers caused by great defensive pressure. It was a 10 all first quarter. The second quarter was the similar to the first, with West putting up a strong, physical fight. Some changes were made in the third quarter and this saw North pull away by 6 goals and were able to find ideal feeding position. North were able to hold that lead and keep up that defensive pressure. This was a great game to go into finals next week. Best players: Jessie Little (BFT gym towel) and Alycia Close (Fasta Pasta) B Grade North 55 vs West 45 A great end to the home and away season girls. All players put in 100% and did their parts. Some really strong work from Keeley and Sarah in goals with Abbey and Elyse so so close on every single pass into our defence circle. Our mids drove well and were able to deliver some good ball into the goalies. Well done girls and looking forward to playing like this in the finals. Best players: Brianna Lush (Di Giorgio wine) and Sarah Dally (Fasta Pasta) C Grade North 56 vs West 26 After a slow start, we eventually switched on at the end of the first quarter. We continued to build and work as a team to get an easy win over a rather young West side. Well done girls. Best players: Kirily Kramins (Fasta Pasta) and Katies Dyson (Fasta Pasta) Under 17’s North 42 vs West 61 The girls again this week got off to a great start and put together a strong first quarter. Unfortunately following our strong start, the girls weren’t able to convert our hard-earned defensive turnovers down our attacking end which ultimately saw us lose touch with a strong West side. Special mention to our two Kate and Katie, who worked hard in defensive all game, with Kate winning back plenty of the ball for us. Well done on making the finals girls, looking forward to our game on Sunday.
Best players: Kate Winterfield (Federal Hotel) and Katie Dyson (Fasta Pasta) Under 15 A’s North 46 vs West 28 A shakey start to the game with West capitalising on some of our errors. We eventually got going and with some accurate shooting by Cara and Macey (100% by Mace in the 1st and last quarters) and with some timely intercepts/rebounds by the defenders Stella, Luca and Tenielle we were able to pull away and get a good win to end the home and away season. Looking forward to the final series with these girls. Best players: Jayme Young (Federal Hotel) and Macey Griffith (McDonalds) Under 15 B’s North 20 vs West 36 start, but sadly couldn’t contain the intensity for a whole 4 quarters. I am super proud of how much the girls have improved over the season. Best players: Mia Dyson (Federal Hotel) and Summer Mackereth (McDonalds) Under 13 A’s North 59 vs West 30 Congratulations girls you should be proud of your efforts against West. Defence over the ball, reading the play & contesting was a highlight. Wonderful accuracy by our goalies. Looking forward to the final series with you all. Best players: Isabella Stafford (Federal Hotel) and Raine Darmaani (McDonalds) Under 13 B’s North 24 vs West 35 Girls had some great passages of play and tried really hard to close the score between us and West. The girls have done so well throughout the minor rounds, we look forward to the finals and the girls putting in all their effort. The girls have a had a great season and should hold their heads very high. Best players: Macie Allen (Fasta Pasta) and Mischa Human (McDonalds) Under 11’s North 20 vs West 23 Great game by all today against a very strong west team. You have all grown in the understanding of the game and the skills required to play. We had a loss, but such amazing teamwork was shown to finish of what’s been a successful season. Well done girls. Best players: Stella Yeates (Lip balm) and Addison Kamphuis (Lip balm)

nikesha facey Keish started playing at West Gambier in 2017. Keish has played in the 17’s and A-reserve teams. In 2021 we have seen her take the court in her first full year in A Grade and has found her feet in the competition t h ro u g h t h e ye a r ca u s i n g headaches for her opposition. She is a hard and tight checking defender and is able to create many turnovers throughout the games. She plays an important role in the sides attack line. She is a versatile player but is a quiet achiever. This girl will play a vital role in our finals campaign. Keish is also coaching the 13A’s this season. Congratulations Keisha on reaching your 100 Game milestone.

SOPHIA POLLIFRONE
Sophia started playing in 2018 at West Gambier in the under 11’s and is now part of the 13B’s team in 2021. Sophia is a quite player on court and follows instructions well and puts in 100% at every game. She loves to play in WD and enjoys shooting goals too. She has come a very long way
A Grade - We had a really tough game in the A-grade on Saturday. We did go down by 1, but it definitely wasn’t a disappointing loss as there are a lot of positives to take away from the game. Millicent have a lot of talent within their team and experienced finals players, but we are excited for the challenge of playing them in the first final. B Grade - What a way to finish off the season, not the results we wanted but the girls tried their best with team members out with injury. Now to support East teams in the finals, good luck to them all. 13A - Millicent 79 - East 5 Best Players - Sharni Clarke, Lily McIntosh Awards Lily Foster - Athletes Foot Charlotte Crute - Fasta Pasta Katie Kerr - Bakers Delight Not the best way to end a season, but t h e g i r l s h ave p ro g re s s e d a n d developed their skills hugely throughout this season. There was some positives from the game, strong attacking at the ball, grounding of feet with minimal stepping and great patience with their passing. Some of the girls played in positions they hadn't played in before and did extremely well. Under 11s - Well that’s a wrap for the season! The under 11’s played their last game on Saturday! Although they did not win the game the girls maintained their goals each quarter! This young group of girls are strong, determined children who have the biggest heart for netball! Each one of them has improved week in and week out, bringing something new to their games each week! It has been an absolute privilege coaching these young girls and I look forwards to watching them grow throughout their future years!
