Following the disappointing loss to Millicent, a selection of South players travelled down the Jubilee Highway to the “Kennel” and took home the 2022 Mouse Cup. The lucky Demons soaked up the success that night and will be hoping to enjoy a similar feeling when serious business resumes on the field at the same venue. After last weeks’ wake up call South will be fully committed to getting back to its best and rediscover its free ball movement after it was cut off by the Saints. For the first time this year, coach Brayden Kain was limited to just one goal and needs three majors to reach the 300-goal career milestone. He could be the sole major target up forward after his partner in crime Brodie Foster finished the Millicent clash in a tracksuit. Another injury headache to add to the others was created by Jake Tentye, whose is in doubt after experiencing a horrific leg injury minutes before the final siren. East will try to force the Demons into a scrappy and contested fight. This tactic worked against North Gambier keeping the scoreboard even, but the red and black could not persist and eventually the Tigers cruised home. In very windy conditions last Hicks, Jayden Lines, Hunter week we had alot of mixed Mansell, Mitchell Price, Tayne Williamson and Caleb Casey. results. U14s was very one sided but our boys played a good brand of football. Jaiden Picken starred with a bag of 7 goals and was best on ground followed by Jarvi Mee, Riley Lawrence, Cruz McCracken and Lachlan Legray.

Seniors was probably groundhog day in the first half with missed opportunities in front of goal which sabotaged a potential lead. Second half was a slog with the guys only kicking 1 goal 2. We went down by 42points luckily for us Nick Lock had a best on ground performance or we would of gone down by a fair bit more next was Jayden Eldridge, James Byrne, Carl Slape, Luke Johnston and John Forster.

U16s with a good 4 quarter effort by the lads they were rewarded with a 46 point win with another best on ground performance by Angus Clarke then Nicholas Bignell, Julio Teodoro, Elijah Stratford, Tex A big thank you for everyone Tilley and Jack Lawrence. involved in making the mouse cup a huge success. There's no club we respect more than Millicent FNC and last week's results showed why. With a n u m b e r o f p l aye rs m i s s i n g Millicent found a way to win the senior game by 32 points which in fact flattered us, scoring shots were a better indication of the game at 24 to 12.

In the highest standard U18 game of the season so far, South prevailed 85-40. The ball zipped up and down the ground and some great goals were kicked. Thankfully the reserves continued to fly the flag with a convincing 71 point victory. With a number of injuries to senior players the depth of the reserves group has been tested but every player has responded as we'd hope with the team not missing a beat - well done to coach Fonz and his sidekick Whisper. Kym Eagleson notched his 4th double figure bag in the last month with 10 goals, best players were the master Luke Foran, Nick Seager, Kym Eagleson, Ben Milstead, Chris Fallas and

Vause and Hunter Higgins. This week we're at the kennel against our most traditional opponent. Saturday night is meals and awards back at the club starting 6pm followed by Steve Reid's 100 Club draw which is always a great night. There's still time to get a ticket, just let us know via return email. Good luck to all Demons!

What a great win by the Senior boys. Always a tough encounter when meeting South at South and again it did not disappoint. A solid four quarter performance was pleasing to see, and is a good example of how our group is maturing. Once again the young boys really lead the way for us, with Kalan Shanks, Josh Werchon and Kade Varcoe covering huge amounts of ground and were again brilliant in the roles they played. Fraze was dangerous in the air and our whole back six held up really well against a potent south attack, lead strongly by Guinny and Kade Bradley. Bomma was super dangerous up forward providing a contest, kicking 3 goals and creating numerous other opportunities.

solid all game and hard nuts Pratty and Paddy Jennings rounded out our better players.

The juniors travelled back up to South on Sunday and were greeted with even windier conditions the day before as well as some rain later in the morning. The weather wasn’t conducive to attractive footy but all grades slugged it out and provided a tight contest. Big thanks to couple of South 12D’s who filled in for our 12C’s and gave there all to be in our better players. We welcome the Cats to McLaughlin Park today in what is always a tough contest across all grades.

Congratulations to Craig Gysbers who played his 200th A grade game! The Ressies were up against a very deep and talented South team who came out firing, and the lads found the going tough early. Was always going to be a tough one but we found a bit of space in the second half. Digger was good up forward and led from the front coming up the ground to create chances with Nat also putting in a lot of effort all over the ground. Clay Reilly and Trainer Jimmy were

WITH A WITNESS TO THEIR LIVES Saluting the Champions: BRIAN ‘BRINNY’ LANE East multi premiership player and champion LEAGUE CLUBS CHASE BRIAN LANE’S SIGNATURE WHILE East Gambier’s Brian “Brinny” Lane was both a premiership wingman and rover, kicking six goals in a match against Portland and four goals in a grand final and regularly in the best players, playing on the wing was where he preferred to be. “My father Col brought me up to be a wingman, as I had the pace to cut through lines. I never really like roving,” Lane said. Lane possessed great pace and while he preferred centre wing, he was equally at home as a rover where he scouted the packs with his ballwinning skills and excellent disposal, but it was at centre wing where he played in East’s first A grade premiership in 1965. His pace, skills and ability to get through traffic with some clever dodging and weaving and ability to hit the scoreboard with his accurate kicking for goal and by the end of 1964 he had attracted interest from league clubs on both sides of the border. In early 1965 he was invited to train with VFL club Geelong as well as being include in a squad to attend a summer training camp in Surfer’s Paradise where he took part in two trial matches. Included in that Geelong squad with Brian Lane were some premiership players Graham “Polly” Farmer, Bill Goggin, Denis Marshall, John “Sammy” Newman, captain Fred Wooller, Ken Goodland, John Devine, Wayne Closter and Mount Gambier’s John Yeates. The two practice matches were played with a curtain-raiser prior to the main game, with the teams made up of recruits or reserves players trying to make their way into the league team. When Lane stripped down to play in the curtainraiser, players were told by the reserves coach that if they were taken off at any time during the game, it meant they weren’t good enough and could “go home”. Lane played well in the first half but at half-time the coach pulled him from the game and realising the situation Lane started to shower and change into his street clothes. As he was getting dressed, in walked Geelong senior coach Bob Davis. He saw Lane in the corner and said” “What do you think you are doing?” When Lane responded with what he had been told, Davis said, “Get stripped, you are playing in the main game, that’s why you were taken off”. Lane played in the senior game which included many of Geelong’s 1963 premiership players and

he was playing on a league wingman called David Brown who would become a regular A grade player. Lane soon knew how quick the game was and Brown had almost as much pace as Lane and they had a great duel. So-much-so that Lane was selected to play in the second senior trial. He said it was an unbelievable experience playing alongside Polly Farmer, Sam Newman and others such as Billy Goggin. Lane more than held his own and Geelong’s coach Bob Davis was impressed. However, he did not enjoy his time in Geelong. The club set him up, living in a hotel opposite Kardinia Park, Geelong’s home ground and apart from walking to training twice a week, Lane knew no-one, had little contact with anyone, had no transport and had to walk everywhere. He was lonely. “I got sick of wandering around the streets with nothing to do, so, being a country boy, I headed home,” Lane said. Years later Lane regrets being so hasty because he reckons he could have made it into VFL company. He had the pace, skills, fearless approach and know-how to match it with the best and he certainly came under notice in the two trials and impressed coach Bob Davis who was particularly keen for him to sign with the Cats. Geelong tried to change his mind but he was already back in Mount Gambier. However, fortunately for East, Lane played for the Bulldogs in the 1965 WBFL season and was part of that famous East Gambier premiership. In that premiership year Lane was runner-up to centreman Jock O’Brien in the club’s best and fairest award which gives an indication of how consistent he played throughout that historic year and he backed that up with some great performances during East’s finals campaign. At the end of 1965 the offers came thick and fast from SANFL clubs, Central District, South Adelaide and Glenelg and Lane chose Glenelg and once in the league team he soon impressed coaches, fans and the media with his pace, immaculate ball skills and an ability to know where the ball was and win it. It was interesting that Central District wrote a letter to Lane, expressing the fact they were keen to recruit him and that SA state player, former West Adelaide player and Magarey Medal winner and now playing coach of Central District, Ken Eustace had seen Lane in action and was keen for him to join the club. Eustace and other Centrals officials drove to Mount Gambier at a time when East had a bye midway through the season and went to Lane’s employer where he was an apprentice

GREENWOOD electrician, seeking to speak with him about signing a form to release him from the WBFL and try out with Central District and play there, even though it was halfway through the season. Eventually he chose Glenelg where former South Gambier brothers Doug and Bruce Long were playing. Doug Long played for Geelong and had coached Glenelg but were now coached by former triple Magarey Medal winner and Sturt legend Len Fitzgerald. Even though Fitzgerald was now in retirement and a non playing coach he impressed Lane when his kicking and marking ability, even though he was into 40s by this time. Also at Glenelg at that time were former Millicent players Neil Sutherland and Merv Peek. While the pressure and pace of SANFL was intense and a step up from his WBFL days, Lane soon found his way and became a regular on centre wing for Glenelg during that league season. He played 12 league games and did well but again being a country boy he became restless and returned home to East in 1967 before moving to Victoria to play for Frankston Rovers for two years during which time he won the club’s best and fairest award. At that time he knew East coach Fred Hepner was leaving after five years as coach and Lane had become good friends with Hepner’s brother Graham and they headed to Frankston (Frankston Rovers) to play footy. Lane rates Fred Hepner as a “real player’s coach”. He was a good tactician, and had the respect of players so much that if he told players to a do a job, they did it without question, but what impressed Lane most was that Hepner led by example and if there was a tough job to be done, he showed them how it needed to be done. • PHOTO: Brian Lane training with Geelong in 1965 in Geelong colours prior to their summer camp in Surfer’s Pa r a d i s e . MATCH REPORTS SOUTH GAMBIER V MILLICENT The Saints were missing first choice goaling combina on Tabatha Sanderson and Demi Verbena but with replacements the calibre of SA 17 & Under goal shooter Annelise Janssen and Paige Nitschke, who o en fills a shoo ng role for Millicent, South was always s ll going to have to be at their best to cause the upset. The opening quarter was a ght affair with Millicent enjoying a three goal lead. Despite some second quarter inaccuracy, Millicent extended its lead, as much due to the defensive efforts of Por a McRae, Hannah Nitschke and Georgia Clarke as anything, with the defensive line restric ng South to only 10 scoring opportuni es, compared with the Saints’ 25. The Demons upped the ante in the third, with Alyssa Duncan not just finding more space but also finishing accurately with seven from eight but with Millicent again finding their radar, ne ng 15 from 18 as a combina on, the lead extended to 14 at the final change. A perfect 10 from 10 from Lara Munro and an improved defensive effort from the home side saw South win the final quarter, but, only just, and the final margin was 12. The Demons just made too many unforced errors, while the relentless pressure from the Saints also forced a number of errors that the Millicent players were only too happy to capitalise on. South goal keeper Grace Edwards had a strong four quarter performance in her ba le with Janssen, while Munro and Duncan had their moments when the Millicent defence allowed. In the end, Millicent was able to control the contest, as well as giving Lauren Van Eeden another taste of top grade ac on, and Kayleigh Taylor also injected into the mid court in a testament to the Saints’ depth. NORTH GAMBIER V EAST GAMBIER North Gambier celebrated the long awaited opening of its new clubrooms at the weekend

and a er the formali es the A Grade girls backed it up with a victory. Both the Tigers and Bulldogs had players missing and it saw Lauran Norman, who has been a li le Miss Fix It for North this season, take the goal keeper bib, while Cara Nulty debuted on the a acking wing. Issues, too, for the Bulldogs, with Amryn Bosko unavauialblke due to illness and Sarah Lock injuring her calf in the warm up and while trying to make a fist of it, eventually forced from the court, leaving the goal a ack role to Tarsh McCallum, who teamed with Renee Henke. It was locked away at the first change, with North then securing a four goal lead by half me. That was extended to five at the final change before a perfect final quarter shoo ng performance from Caroline Wakefield and Macey Griffith saw the home side home by six. In the end, the fact North had a bonafide shoo ng combi na on, while East was trying to fill some holes, told, with the 50 from 57 proving the difference in the match. East put up 65 shots so there was a clear arm wrestle when it came to me in possession. G i v e n N o r t h d e b u t e d N u l t y, E l y s e Willoughby, who spent a quarter on the defensive wing, and had Norman plying her third posi on this year in A Grade, the win was meritorious, while the Bulldogs would not be too worried by the loss given their own missing personnel. Wakefield’s leadership, the hard running of Brianna Walters and some tough defensive players from Mel Renko and Norman eventually proved the difference, while for East, Tyne Bosko con nued her stellar form on the defensive wing and Emily Hunter provided the drive through the mid court. CASTERTON SANDFORD V WEST GAMBIER West Gambier stamped its authority on its clash with Casterton Sandford early as the 24-9 opening quarter set up the comfortable

DENTON’S

victory. Sarah Ri er was the player doing the damage as she ne er 19 from 22, to go with Lisa McGregor’s perfect five from five as West inflicted their slick ball movement on the Cats defence. The hard running of Tara Bryant and her strong connec on with Ri er and McGregor was proving tough to stop for the home side and were it not for the accurate finishing of young Cats shooter Chloe Foster, the scoreline could have been worse. Ri er backed up her explosive opening quarter with a perfect 17 from 17 in the second but it was definitely a more compe ve quarter from the Cats across the court. Madalene Cleary started to work her way into the contest at goal a ack, while defensively, Charlo e Rice and Caeleigh Humphries, courtesy of some strong work out front from Tessa Marra and Scarle Jarrad, were able to deny the Roos shoo ng combina on as many scoring opportuni es and at the main break it was a 26 goal game. The Cats circle defenders swapped bibs at the half and the pressure on the Rios a ack line did improve and the home side only lost the quarter by two, with Cleary again domina ng the shoo ng stakes courtesy of her strong connec on with the hard running Gaby Tomkins. It was not as polished performance from the Roos in the third and the final quarter also saw a more compe ve effort from the Cats, who, in the end, only went down by six goals in the second half. West has arguably had the most se led lineup of all the A Grade teams in the compe on thus far and they con nue to be a well-oiled machine, not just working well with ball in hand but also pressuring opposi on teams into error courtesy of their relentless defence.

ROUND PREVIEWS EAST GAMBIER V SOUTH GAMBIER Last me these two met, South Gambier just had the edge for the first three quarters but in the end, the Bulldogs were able to steady, force errors and secure the win. The performance will give the young Demons confidence, though, that they can match it with East Gambier and with an injury cloud over Sarah Lock, who hurt her calf during the round six warm up and was unable to make it through the game, South should enter the clash with confidence. Lara Munro and Alyssa Duncan are an emerging shoo ng combina on that just need to find some more consistency and they will do well to hold the front space this weekend and not give East defenders Bo Creek and Morgan Amy the chance to contest balls in the air, which is where the Bulldogs duo shines. At the other end Grace Edwards will match up on Amryn Bosko, who also missed last week due to illness, and that will be one of the most pivotal duels, with Edwards coming off a strong performance on State player Annelise Janssen. Ellie Bouchier will also be cri cal with the South goal defender a great source of crea ng turnover ball, while Ruby Richter and Egan Reid will need to pressure the East feeders and not allow them easy access to the circle’s edge. Reid takes on Emily Hunter and that is another cri cal match up, while Richter will need to use her height advantage to deny Tarsh McCallum, is she doesn’t lineup in the shoo ng circle again, good feeding posi on. Tully McShane and Reid will need to work over me to ensure the Demons work the ball safely through the tough Bulldogs defence with Tyne Bosko on the defensive wing in outstanding form and Hunter always tough at the defensive end.

There is no reason this shouldn’t be another ght contest with the Bulldogs experience jsudt ge ng them over the line again. WEST GAMBIER V NORTH GAMBIER Always a tough match up, the clash between West and North at Malseed Park will be the match of the round. The Roos con nue to stamp their authority on the compe on as the most likely challenger to Millicent and if North cannot limit supply to Sarah Ri er, there is no chance the Tigers can secure the win. Ri er is not just finishing accurately but earning a stack of scoring opportuni es, thanks to her strong combina on with Lisa McGregor, as well as the connec on with the emerging mid court of Mikaela Horrigan and Tara Bryant. Denying Ri er too much ball will not just fall to the North circle defenders but also the pressure placed in transi on and the key feeders, meaning the likes of Brianna Walters, Libby Morgan and Lauran Norman will need to deny the Roos mid court strong feeding posi on, while the ba le between McGregor and Mel Renko will be match defining. At the other end, West has a similar issue as they look to deny Caroline Wakefield too much supply. Jade Ri er will be the direct match up and she has had some strong ba le with the Tigers spearhead but she will also be hoping the support from defensive partner Amy Cram and defensive work from Zoe Malseed and Bryant outside the circle will help force the Tigers into delivery errors. West is the more se led of the two lineups, with North s ll nkering with what is already a new look line-up, that has also been impacted by player unavailability, giving the Roos the edge again in what should be a close contest.

MILLICENT V CASTERTON SANDFORD This weekend presents the young Cats with another great learning experience when they head to McLaughlin Park to take on the undefeated Saints. Casterton Sandford con nues to nker with its line-up and saw some promising signs with new look defensive and shoo ng combina ons at the weekend. Madalene Cleary, in her return from an ACL injury, con nues to work her way back, and she combined with Chloe Foster at the weekend and could well be the shoo ng duo of choice moving forward. D e fe n s i v e l y, C a e l e i g h H u m p h r i e s con nues to be the backbone of the back third and at the weekend she combined with Charlo e Rice and given it was their first ou ng as a duo, there were signs they could develop into a tough combina on. The mid court of Scarle Jarrad, Tess Marra and Gaby Tomkins are hard running and relentless defensively and they look to have started to form a great understanding as they link through the middle of the court. All those combina ons will be tested with Tabatha Sanderson and Demi Verbena set to return a er being sidelined last weekend, with the mid court of Paige Nitschke, Lillie Paul and Georgia Clarke, con nuing to cover the absence of Lisa Duldig, moving the ball with speed and precision. At the other end Hannah Nitschke and Por a McRae con nue to make life tough for opposi on shoo ng combina ons and it is hard to mount a case for the Saints not enjoying another comfortable victory.

East Gambier Red & Black A GRADE - East 44 lost to North 50 We nearly got there girls. With injuries and illnesses leaving us without our two goalies, I think we adapted well to our changes. Renee played a phenomenal game at GS sinking most our goals. Awesome job to play backto-back games. Tarsh you really stepped up and held your own once again in a position you are so unfamiliar with, but you did what we needed and help create open space in the circle. Might be bringing back that junior GA. We had great patience in attack and we should be proud of how we played. Strong drive down the court out of defence. Still can work on a better one on one. Let’s hope we can get back on track soon. Best Players – Tyne Bosko & Emily Hunter Awards – Renee Henke (Creek Livestock) Tarsh McCallum (OK Pie Shop) A RES – East 40 defeated North 32 A nice consistent game, and with a few players away we all played our roles to get the win. A really good game defensively right down the court, which created numerous turn overs that we were able to score on and slowly increase out lead. Nice strong finish, good game girls. Best Players – Chloe Perryman & Kate Dempsey Awards – Chloe Perrryman (Nourish Nook) Kate Dempsey (Fasta Pasta) B GRADE – East 26 Lost to North 50 Not one of our better games. With a few players missing, windy conditions and North hungrier for the ball, we couldn’t get the win. Thank you to the girls that filled in. Time to work harder and refocus for this week. Best Players – Nicola Smith & Shannon James Awards – Nicola Smith (Jens Hotel) Shannon James (San Piero) C GRADE – East 44 defeated North 21 With a firie start from the attack line came a strong scoring advantage. Defenders made an impression with many turnovers converting in the first half. Multiple changes caused some challenging gelling for the girls but something to work on. Can't wait to see what's in store this week. Best Players –Shannon James & Tamara Janeway Awards – Shannon James (Gym Challenge Meals) & Eryn Caruso (Zambrero’s) 17’s – East 20 lost to North 58 The start of the 2nd round and we are now looking to improve on our scores etc. The 3rd quarter was really good, which saw better passing options and we kept the court opened. we all need to keep reoffering and give our passers options, not wait for someone else to be there. Work harder and put the extra effort in. I know you all have the ability to do this

V

Best Players – Chloe Lines & Raine Scott Awards – Raine Scott (Boost) Tonique Burford (San Piero) 15A’s – East 13 lost to North 76 Going up against a dominant North team was always going to be a hard task. The effort provided in the first 2 quarters was great to see but we did lack that a little going into the final half of the game. Moving forward we’ll work on continuing that determination throughout the game regardless of score line and build on the relationships between our defenders, mid court and shooters to provide smoother passages of play down the court. Best Players – Sharni Clark & Abby Lines Awards – Abby Lines (Hungry Jacks) Millie Button (Bakers Delight) 15B’s – East 35 lost to North 37 After a tough game in the 15A’s the girls regrouped and, with a level head went into the 15B’s game the most competitive I’ve seen this season. Our attack line was on fire and the movement of the ball down the court was everything we could have asked for and more. The circle defence put constant pressure on and created t u r n o v e r a f t e r t u r n o v e r. Unfortunately, we didn’t come away with a win but the girls should not be disheartened by any means. The teamwork and effort of each and every individual was fantastic to see. Best Players – Sharni Clark & Millie Button Awards – Sharni Clark (Natural Born Grillers) & Millie Button (Wendy’s) 13A’s – East 5 lost to North 39 A fantastic game today girls. You have improved so much since our last meeting with North and the score reflected this. You stayed focused and tried your hardest all game. Well done girls. You should be really proud of your efforts. Best Players –Tahni Kemp & Mia Little Awards – Mia Little (Fasta Pasta) Tahni Kemp (McDonalds) 13B’s – East 5 lost to North 27 All the girls did a really good job today. We put some of you in positions you don't normally play in, but you gave it everything. You never gave up and tried your hardest. Well done girls. Great effort today. Best Players – Izzy Cook & Ava Hosking Awards – Vespa Scott (25 Acres) Isana Mee (Scroll Queen) 11’s – East 27 defeated North 4 Best Players –Liana Dickson & Isabelle Neilson Awards – Scarlett Dwyer (OK Pie Shop) Liana Dickson (Hungry Jacks)

South Gambier Red & White

Always a tough outing when we opponent into error and also take on Millicent and the weekend brought the ball down the court with her usual style. was no exception… It is safe to say our B and C Grade teams have started to find their mojo and after both had disappointing heavy losses in round one bounced back to secure really hard fought close victories…

The other great game from the weekend was the n ail biting 17 & Under game…

It was equally tense in the B Grade where Leyna came back from her COVID isolation to lead the attack line, combining with Sophie to get the ball in good shooting position…

Shout out to Matho as well who is knocking it out of the park with the watermelon and mandarins!!!!! Not to mention the after match nibbles…

After a lacklustre opening quarter, the girls just kept working to get back into the contest and only go down by one goal against the The C Grade victory was set up by premiership favourites… some strong defensive work from J e s s M c G r e g o r b e fo r e s h e Lara was great on the finish, Alyssa succumbed to an ankle injury and was her usual clever self in thankfully Misty Dalton was there showing leadership and setting up to take the defensive role and the attack line, Milla, Chelsea continue to apply the pressure Ryan and Ellie were strong and create turnovers. through the mid court, Jade got some important touches and was Mel and Tara were also part of important as a back up pass when that defensive effort and they the pressure was on, while were also critical in moving the Alannah, Sophie and Chelsea D u n n w o r ke d o v e r t i m e t o ball down court… produce errors from the Ange Queale provided great drive Saints…some very promising through the mid court and signs… launched some huge passes into he shooters, while Ash showed Hopefully everyone has grabbed she can play on the attacking wing their new playing uniform now just as well as she can in goals and and just a reminder to register if in the first half she also secured a you haven’t yet and Kirsty has few interceptions which were been or will be in touch regarding critical in keeping the C Grade apparel and club fees… ahead on the scoreboard… Thanks again to everyone who is Brooke Winterfield was back doubling up, sitting on benches, where she belongs – shooting helping with match day duties and goals – and along with Ella just being prepared to help where finished the good work of their needed…our volunteers have t e a m m a t e s t o e n s u re t h e been more important than ever this season… premiership points were there.

It was arguably Kaitlyn’s best game for the club as she dominated at wing attack, while Shelby was as reliable as ever, ta k i n g c h a rge w h e n i t wa s necessary in the tense final minutes of the match. This was another match set up by the defenders in the first half where Bella and Maca just kept turning the ball over, rebounded strongly and were key in transition… Naomi showed a new side to her game when she moved to wing defence and hassled her

West Gambier Blue & Red A fairly successful day all in all last week over at Casterton. Congratulations goes to Maddie Milich and Kirby Hunter who reached their 100 games milestone with West on the weekend! U/11s - West 17 – Casterton 9 The little roo girls had a great game against Casterton. Great shooting by Molly and Zoe had us off to a great start. Some great passages of play by the mid court. Chaneil got her hands on plenty of the ball. Aggie as usual played a great game in defence. Harper provided plenty of drive for the girls. Jorja was a little superstar shooting her first goal. Mackenna and Phoebe got better and better as the game progressed. Ruby also had a stand out game grabbing plenty of loose balls Best player Harper Lindner and Chaneil Cowland U/13B - West 7 – Casterton 22 A well fought game in the first half but their height and some of our turn overs unfortunately going against us. Exceptional work from Isobel and Sammy. Sara, Claire and Matilda working well in the defence. After a slow start with goals Isla and Eva came together with Matilda helping out. Ella holding her own in WD. Improved in defence but need to come in front so we can work together well. Let’s go west!! Best players: Ella mckenny and Sara Richards Game day awards: Sammy Foster and Isobel Richards U/13A - West 44 – Casterton 7 A cold early start in Casterton but it was pleasing to see that the Cats have really improved since we met them in the first round. Our girls are working hard on their individual skills but are also coming together well as a team and have each other’s back. We came away with a convincing win but we will need to be on our toes next week when we face North. Best Players Lila Pearson and Swaye Lindner Game day awards Lara Murdoch and Analeigh Anderson U/15B - West 44 – Casterton 35 Unfortunately we were down both a shooter and a defender last week, but were lucky enough to have Imogen and Maggy fill in. The girls showed great movement in and around the ring, resulting in our highest scoring game to date. Ava and Miley welcomed Imogen in to help shoot, while our mid court appreciated Maggys drive in defense. A very special shout out goes to Maya, who simply seemed to be everywhere as an option, and really opened the space up on the court. Best Players Imogen Mcgregor and Ava Reid Defence U/15A - West 41 – Casterton 25 This week the girls came out of the blocks fast, scoring the first few goals and although we were down at the first quarter break the girls looked confident, they could bring it back. Great defence from both Maggy and Mikayla resulting in some wonderful turnovers. The goalies seemed to get in a better rhythm in the last quarter to come away with a great win. Well done girls. ️ Best players Alex Hudson and Maggy Dyson Game day awards Lucy Simpson and Maggy Dyson U/17’s - West 33 – Casterton 48 Another tough game for my girls going down to Casterton by 15. They get on the court and work hard and I can see them trying to do what I have asked them to do which is all I can ask. The defence, Hannah Seidel and Maddie Milich worked brilliantly again this week with Maddie playing her 100th game for West. Maddie is one of those players that all

coaches love to coach. If I asked her to play GA or any position she doesn’t normally play, she would get in there and do her very best without any complaint. Love your work Mads. Jordy Hereper and Aleisha Pearson are playing great as a goalie duo, with Amity Sheedy, Halle Boult and Stevi Clayton supporting them around the goal circle. Kirra McKenny played a great pressure game at WD and gave 100% for the whole game. Kirra is the same at training, she will go so hard for the entire hour. She is like the energiser bunny. Great job Kirra, awarded first best player today. Charlotte Scott was out injured today, hopefully she will make a quick recovery and we see her back on the court soon. Best players Kirra McKenny and Maddie Milich B Grade - West 26 – Casterton 42 The B grade hit the court Saturday with a renewed purpose. Communication all over the court was fantastic. Passing and timing looking a lot better for all four quarters. Defensively Maddie and Courtney were getting their hands on plenty of the ball, and the mid court were able to move the ball down to the scoring circle. Casterton’s defence was tight and Darcy, Kristy and Ra worked tirelessly to get around and score when the opportunity arose. Zoe and Kirby were relentless and kept the opposition accountable. Keep up the good work girls! Best players Maddie Milich and Ra Hare C Grade - West 44 – Casterton 37 Couldn’t be prouder of the girls walking away with our first win for the season! The whole game was phenomenal to watch and the girls did not give up and fought hard for every goal and it was seen with the awesome pressure the whole way down the court. Some great passages of play seeing the girls backing each other up and offering the second efforts. It was a whole team effort and the girls very much deserved it, we look forward to keeping up the momentum and taking on the tiges again! Best players Mikaela Campbell and Lisa Boyd A Reserve - West 52 – Casterton 39 Covid struck again our team again which saw us take to the court with yet another different line up. It's great that we can be versatile and that we came away with a win against a close checking Casterton team. We started better this game but still took a little while to adjust in attack. Bryna ran hard all game and Claire positioned well against a taller defender and shot consistently. Anna played a terrific game at WD and caused some headaches for the Casterton attack line. We struggled a little with our consistency bringing the ball out of defence into attack, but once again steadied and pulled away in the last quarter. Well done to Aliesha playing back to back games and thanks to Hannah and Halle from U17s for sitting bench for us! Best Players Claire Hunter and Bryna Kuller

A Grade - West73 – Casterton 41 Another good win today. A great start really set us up for the rest of the game. Sarah was unstoppable in the goal ring and was fed well all day by Mik and Tara. Once again, our defensive unit worked well together to create loads of turnovers. I'm really loving what we are starting to put out on court each week. Best players Sarah Ritter and Tara Bryant This week we welcome North to Malseed park. Good luck to all our teams! Keep your eye on the red and the blue! Go west!

North Gambier

Under 11’s North 4 vs East 27 We tried some new combinations today but still struggled to get down to the scoring end and finish off. There were some signs of space and good passing and how it works but we need to be able to be quicker with our passes and decision maker. Best players: Stella Yeates and Addison Kamphius Under 13A’s North 39 vs East 5 We used this game to adjust to our new team structure (as Megan Wells moved up to under 15B). Zoe Davidson and Lacey Allen's attack line continues to grow strongly. Lacey Allen made strong and accurate passes to the goalies. Mia Griffith, Georgia Nulty and Mischa Human in different combinations in GA and GS were unstoppable and accurate under the post. Their transferable skills were also seen in defence, where they teamed up with Raine and Grace Collins. They took intercepts and rebounds to provide the team with good opportunities. Surely a game to build our confidence going forward. Best players: Lacey Hunter and Ava Halloran (sponsored by Halloran Diesel) Under 13B’s North 27 vs East 5 Today was one of our better games so far. We managed to get some rhythm into our attacking side. Jenna Baron joined our team from today onwards. She was strong in GA and formed a good goalie combination with Carey Grivell. Otherwise, it was a full court effort, from GK to GS, everyone worked hard. Tayah Jones, Ava Halloran and Amelie Adams played well together in defence while Mackenzie, Piper and Lacey Hunter managed the mid court. We still need to work on getting our passes stronger and more accurate. Overall, a better performance. Best players: Lacey Allen (sponsored by Niche homes) and Georgia Nulty

Under 15 A’s North 76 vs East 13 Another strong win by the girls this week making strong connections from defence to attack. Macey Griffith was able to connect nicely with Cara Nulty and Ava Collins in the ring. Kelsie Anderson and Ruby Mitchell continue to prove why they are such a good duo; defending strongly out in front, boxing out for the rebound, and knowing when to come off their players for an intercept. Maggie Collins and Sarah Brown continue to combine well through the midcourt providing strong leads and being patient with the ball when the pressure is on. Jayme Young was a welcome addition after breaking her elbow and immediately her presence was felt on court. The girls know they will come up against a stronger west side next week and will be preparing for round 7. Best players: Maggie Collins (sponsored by ILM) and Sarah Brown Under 15 B’s North 37 vs East 35 We had shaky start which then meant we couldn’t quite get a good run on. But after a bit of a rev up at 3 quarter time the girls pulled themselves together and made a 9 goal turn around to come away with a 2-goal win. Lily Brook had an amazing run in C and WA while Mia worked hard in the goals. Best players: Lily Brook (sponsored by Squashbrook) and Mia Dyson Under 17’s North 58 vs East 20 The focus for today’s game was to work hard

Yellow & Black and play smart netball for four quarters. The girls were asked to put what we had been practicing into our game, and they certainly did not disappoint. All players worked hard off the ball to create space and lose their players, providing a number of strong options in attack. The defensive pressure was again excellent, creating a number of turnovers. Our drives out of defence were timed well, linking seamlessly with our attack line. Decisive moves in attack, backed with precision passing allowed our goalies to score convincingly. It was an outstanding effort by the whole team, securing a strong win for Ava Norman’s 100th junior game for the Tigers. Great effort girls! Best players: Ava Norman and Zarly Jones (sponsored by Greg and Christine Kennedy) C grade North 21 vs East 44 The girls put up a good fight against East this week. The pressure was strong in all areas of the court, making the opposition really work hard to get the ball down the court. We had some excellent intercepts and turnovers in defence, and good movement in the attack end too. Best players: Justine Forrest and Shay Merrett B grade North 50 vs East 26 North 50 def East 26 Well done girl on a great game. We came out strong right from the start and was able to maintain it for the full 4 quarters. The defence down the entire court put the pressure on East allowing us to get some great turn overs. Our goalies Bri Fuller, Hannah Fox and Ava Noman reading the play off each other extremely well making it hard for the East defenders. A great team effort girls. A big congratulations to Georgia McInerney on her 150th senior game and to Ava Norman for her 1st senior game. Best players: Nat Fox (sponsored by San Piero) and Maddy Pegler A res North 32 vs East 40 North Ares girls worked well with new combinations and line up of players. Congratulations to Katie Dyson on your first Ares game who worked well in the mid court. Alice Tentye had a good battle in C with Alysha Coon and Elyse Willoughby working hard in defense with Bailey Young. New attack combination of Rylee and Ava Collins working well. Best players: Alice Tentye and Katie Dyson A grade North 50 vs North 43 This weekend we faced the reigning premiers again. Despite winning against them in the first round, we knew it was going to be a tough battle to get the win. Player unavailability meant we had a different line up this week, welcoming Cara Nulty and Elyse Willoughby into the side. It took some time to establish the new combinations, which meant the scores were tied at the end of the first quarter. We settled in the second and our excellent defensive pressure provided us with numerous opportunities to get in front on the scoreboard. Despite our defensive work, there were times that we struggled to convert our hard-fought turnovers into goals. However, we continued to persist and with strong leads and improved timing we created the space required to ensure a smoother transition into attack. The last quarter was definitely our strongest, allowing us to finish positively and come away with a win. Best players: Brianna Walters and Lauran Norman

MILLICENT

Millicent Red, Black & White A Grade- Millicent 50 def South 38 With Tab & Dem out we made more changes and the opportunity for Annelise Janssen to play her first A Grade game! She combined well in goals with Paige. Georgia played her best game for the season taking intercepts all over the court. Great versatility girls and well done to Kayleigh Taylor and Lauren Van Eeden who came on at 3/4 time to play their role in the win. A Reserve - Millicent 38 def South 29 Last week we had a new combination once again. After a slow start, found our goalies more freely. We were able to capitalise on our strong defensive work, with a solid effort in the last quarter to push out our margin. B Grade- Millicent 29 lost to South 31 Trying to pass over the top of tall players in windy conditions and south girls playing a very strong, physical game seen us go down by 2points C Grade - Millicent 33 lost to South 36 The tough windy conditions challenged us again. In a tight competitive game South got the best of us and came away with a win. Alannah Pratt had a great game running hard through the centre. We just need to stay positive and work hard at trainings to have a good pay off on Saturdays. 17s - Millicent 52 def South 51 Great first half with some consistent finishing. A lot of changes made which we were able to adapt to even in the tricky weather conditions. We were able to create lots of turnovers, however we weren’t able to convert and score from these, leading us to only win by one goal. 15Bs - Millicent 19 lost to South 23 The windy conditions made it very tough for us to find scoring opportunities and capitalise on our turnovers. The girls worked well as a team and were able to create some great plays down court and support each other in defence.

15As Millicent 60 def South 15 We entered the match without Edie, Mackinlee and Matti and were able to adjust quickly to create early turnovers and score well. Thanks to Eva, Emily and Kalani for filling in. Our versatility and ability to adapt to changes has been very pleasing. Well done girls

13As Millicent 64 def South 5 An impressive high scoring game in windy conditions and with 7 out of the 8 players rotating into the goal circle. A great demonstration of the girls versatility and their ability to adapt to different positions and combinations. The South team never gave up but Millicent’s height advantage and close checking defence combined with their speed and accurate passing were too hard to contain. 13Bs Millicent 32 def South 1 After a strong start in rough conditions down both ends with the help of Amarlie and Olive in the goal circle and Isabel and Imogen doing some excellent defence, we allowed the girls versatility to shine! Lindy, Imogen and Audrey all had a go at goals, and did an excellent job, and Lainie also had a go at wing attack and did worked awesomely! Our mid court consisting of Ella, Courtney, Lindy and Indi did an incredible job transitioning the ball and chasing everything up! The girls played well with a strong start and finish, and are ready to take on next week! 11s Millicent 15 def South 2 In very windy conditions the girls found it hard to find the net and get a score on the board early in the game! Well into the second quarter they adjusted to the conditions and shortened their passing game and and with some good transitions down the court into attack they soon got the rewards! The second half continued to flow their way with some great turnovers and passing into their attacking circle! Another great team game coming away with a win!

Casterton-Sandford Blue, White & Red

With much anticipation throughout Casterton with the local races on Sunday, Island Park was a buzz as the Casterton-Sandford girls took to the court against West Gambier for the second time this season. SENIORS: G a b y, Te s s a , S c a r l e t t & Charlotte made great passages of play throughout the game, but unfortunately our A Grade side couldn’t come away with the win losing 41-73.

The A Reserve game saw the Cats girls leading at half time, but despite the efforts of Claire, Bridie & Sharna, the girls couldn’t hold their lead and lost 39-52. B Grade players this week in Emma & Kerri fought hard for every ball across the court leading the team to a 42-26 win. The score line was close in the C Grade with both West & Cats girls desperate to bring home the win. Brittany, Zoe & Chantelle executed their roles on the court to keep the losing margin to a minimum 37-44. The Under 17’s made a great comeback after their one-goal loss last week to win 48-33. Ebany, Makayla, Marissa & Sophie all played a significant part in the win.

JUNIORS: The Under 15A’s had a tough, hard fought game, but unfortunately lost 25-41. Indi, Chelsea & Amelia demonstrated terrific skills in both defence & attack. Indi, Brydie, Caitlyn & Matilda never gave up but couldn’t quite match the skill level of the West Gambier Under 15B’s & lost 35-44. Under 13A players in Ylana, Marlee, Makayla & Brooklyn made certain of each and every pass, but with a few well-timed intercepts from West players, they couldn’t match the goals being put on the scoreboard by the opposition, losing 7-44. Our Under 13B’s were keen to hit the court early on Saturday morning with the promise of a good game. Adele, Marlee, Rachel & Renee worked hard to stretch their winning margin to 22-7 by the end of the game. Hannah & Skye showed off their skills in the Under 11’s on the weekend. With some fast footwork the West Gambier team had to push themselves to get the win over Casterton 917. Goodluck to everyone in Round 7 at Millicent.
