With Millicent not getting close in any of the previous clashes, a miracle is required to stop the Demons from cruising into thedecider

The near inevitable sight of South Gambier and Millicent squaring off for a spot in the big one in the qualifying semi-final will become a reality at McDonaldParkthisSaturday.

The Demons had been blazing into the sunset since knocking over the Saints by 57 points in round 11, but the last round defeat took some windoutoftheirsails.

For Saints’ coach Clint Gallio it was an important moment to build some confidence against their archrival ahead of finals, but knows it will not countformuchwhenfinalsarrive. Powerfully built with strong shoulders Bruhn had an amazing leap and could hold his own againsttallerruckmen. By 1955 Arthurson, a talented half back, was the only oneofthattrioleftstillplaying.

Terry O’Donnell was a tough but skilful ruck rover who was often among the goals. He was also a Barber Shield cricketwicketkeeper-batsmanandplayedinNorth’sfirst cricketpremiershipinthemid1950s.

Powerfully built, he was a top class rover of his day He was a regular in the SEBFL’s inter-league team and with Penola’s Mickey Davidson formed a great duo on the ball. The following year, in 1956 he played one season withPenolaalongsideDavidson, inwhatwasDavidson’s final season as injury started to take its toll on the veteran who won the Mail Medal in the first year of the SEBFLin1946.

In defence, North had long kicking full back Ray Thompson, said to be one the best kicks from the goal square in the league and consistently landed the ball in the centre of the ground. He was tall but also had amazingpaceforabigmananduseditregularlytodash downthegroundwithhislongclearingkicks.

BY 1955 North Gambier was searching to recapture the glory days of the late 1940s when the Tigers won three SEBFLflagsin1946,47and48. Later he was a coach of senior colts and chairman of selectors in North’s 1979 WBFL premiership. Waters passed away several years ago in his early 90s yet even today, his work as a junior coach is still talked about at Tigerland. But they had some young stars coming of age and soon theTigerswouldmakeanimpact. Taylor had arrived from West Adelaide where he played and was captain of the 1947 premiership side. He was also coached of West and Glenelg before moving to North One of his West Adelaide premiership teammates was South Gambier wingmanandcoachintheearly50sDougBeaton.

Among them was a champion in the making in a centremannamedTrevorProbertwhowouldlatermake a name for himself at Tigerland. He was typical stay-at home centreman and whenever the North defence was underpressurethebackmenknewexactlywheretokick theballtogetoutoftroublebecauseProbertwasalways there on his own. Suddenly this turned defence into attack and it was a ploy used very well much later by coachesRitchieGreenandBillCocks. At full forward, veteran Joe Waters, who was a ruckman in his earlier years and had played that position since returning from the war, would go on to be a stalwart of theNorthclub.

NorthhadplentyoftalentandthreeMailMedalwinners (Milton Arthurson, Glen Evans, Ian Adams) in their lineup during the early 1950s when surprisingly they found it difficult to either get into the top four or make much impactonthefinals. Bill Hanel had a standout year that season and was one of the Tigers best players during the finals series. He later would become an influential committee member andstalwartoftheKongorongFootballClub. Abrillianttapruckman,Staffordwasastaratjuniorlevel and was ready for senior level the moment he left school. He would go on to play league football at South Adelaide and Geelong and be a part of North’s famous 1964WBFLpremiershipteam. And it is in the mid court that the game could be won and lost, with Jacinta Clark dominating in centre for East, with good support from Tamara Janeway and Ruby Jacobs.Theywill be matched against the Saints young guns in Sophie Skeer and Alannah Pratt and the experience of captain Nicola Batten, who will have a great battle with Clark in a match up that will certainly help decide the final outcome. Keelie Lindner adds versatility to the line-up and she is a hard worker in whateverrolesheishanded. Millicent are the reigning premiersandaredesperateto successfullydefendthattitle. And the pressure on the feeders will be critical given the form of tall shooter Katie Gaffney, who is coming off a strong month of home and away netball, teaming with the experienced Megan Wilson and young gun Jordy Davis, whoalsocantakearole inthemidcourt. This looms as a goal for goal contest with the Bulldogs just getting the better of the reigningchamps–thistime. Black & White East Black George Street, Millicent Phone 8733 1725

Defensively, they are also a strong line up with Portia M c R a e a n c h o r i n g t h e defensive line, with Lauren VanEeden, who is tight checking and contests every ball, taking plenty of impressive interceptions, Sophie O’Connor always denyingtimeandspacetoher opponents and Maya Tarrant, who can take on all three defensive posts and get the jobdone. North Gambier enters this 2nd semi final with a 2 1 w i n n i n g re co rd ove r Millicent but the Saints will take some confidence in knowing they have defeated this strong Tigers outfit at leastonce. The Tigers are blessed with height in the shooting circle with Megan Wells and Milly Allen both strong on the hold and accurate on the finish.Allencanalsotakeher skills to the other end of the court and have an impact in Miadefence.Dyson teams with the tall timber with her front cuts and speed on the drive into the circle and when she is not passing accurately to her shooting partner she is takingtheshotherself. Claire Mitchell is another strong shooting option for coachJordanaAllenand, like Allen she can also have an impact at the defensive end if Perequired.nnyColeman and Bella Stafford are the other defensive options with Coleman dominating at goal defence and both players havingthe abilityto read the play and create turnover ball. Eva Crowe and Bella Gysbers are two key players for the Saintsandtheircombination in defence will make life tough for the Tigers. They are undersized against North’s tall timber but they are a tenacious duo and will competeforeverything. North, especially with its tall options at either end should book that first spot in the grandfinal.

North

The 15 & Under A 2nd semi final looms as one of the tightest contests of the weekend as Millicent takes on North Gambier for a spot inthegrandfinal.

Lexi Nichols will also play a role with her work over the ball, making life tough for theTigersfeeders.

Chloe Gysbers and Poppy Thorne will control the mid court, whileBreeWatsonisa versatile performer that can impactateitherend. Millie Matthews is also a leader in the mid court, havingmadethewingattack bib her own, while Sarah Sigston and Zoe Ryan will be looking to get good supply fromthatmidcourt. The Tigers mid court sees Summer Mackereth working hard in the wing defence role, Tillie McEachern taking onanyofthethreeroles,Lily Brook bringing great speed and accurate passing to her role and skipper Tora Jones leadingthewayincentre.

Millicent has Mylee Lynch and Molly Cushion in goals, providing the challenge of a smooth moving goal circle, whereslickballmovementis the key and both are accuratefinishers. ThemidcourtisledbyPoppy Venn and Piper Paul, who are smart players blessed with speed and toughness, while Mia Gysbers brings a steady head and good work ethic and Jamie Lucas is as tenacious as they come and often picks up those importantturnovers. And they will need to be at their best as the Tigers have greatshootingoptions. The defensive line is blessed w i t h t h r e e a t h l e t i c defenders who are as strong on the ground as they are in the air with Mackinlee Alcock, Matti Fauchelle and Edie Easterby, who can also head into the mid court, all capable of making life very toughfortheTigersshooting

The saints have won two of the three encounters in season 2022, losing by 10 the first time round, and thenbouncingbackforthree andsevengoalvictories. Jayme Young, Sarah Brown and Maggie Collins inject plenty of speed and tenacity into the mid court and they will run hard all day to keep providing an outlet for their team mates as they look to work the ball into the shootingcircle.

Brydee Starick, Swaye Lindner, Libby Buck and Kara Murray all bring pace and smarts to their roles in the mid court and they all work harddefensivelyaswell. Their opponents this weekend, West Gambier, are chock full of talent but Millicent appears a class above, havingeasilydefeated the Roos on all three occasionsthisseason. The Saints enter this 2nd semi final sitting pretty, undefeated on top of the 13 & Under A and seemingly Lilaunbeatable.Pearson is a key for the Roos, using her height to great effect under the post and she teams well with Lara Murdoch, who uses her speed and well timed moves toopenupspace. Murdoch’s passing is also precise as is the Roos mid court’s work with ball in

Phoebe Rhook anchors the shooting circle for Casterton Sandford with her strong holds and accurate finishing, while her partners in crime, Adele Murphy and Renee Gorman will provide the strong drives into the circle andbotharehappytoattack thepost. The margins were three, 10 and eight goals in low scoring defensive contests andthereisnoreasonnotto think this final will also be a tight scoreline and a tense contest. It is difficult to see a way where West can upset the saints, who will advance in style to the 2022 13 & Under Agrandfinal.

Courtney Sigston, Lindy VanEeden and Imogen Hales will team with Matthews in the mid court to transition the ball with speed, while the defensive duties will fall to Audrey Galambos, Lainie Rainsford and Isabelle Wilson and their ability to create turn over ball with their strong aerial skills will prove the difference and see the Saints advance to the grandfinal.
