CASTERTON SANDFORD v EAST GAMBIER WEST GAMBIER v MILLICENT SOUTH GAMBIER v NORTH GAMBIER

GAME PREVIEW Despite this weekend scheduled as a bye in the 2021 Bendigo Bank Western Border Football League season, there will be no rest for Casterton Sandford and East Gambier. The pair will go head-to-head at Island Park in the only game played in the Limestone Coast on Saturday afternoon after it was postponed due to COVID-19 restrictions back in round 8. It will take place at the same time as the SA Country Football Championships where some of the region’s best will represent Murray South East against other talented regional players from around the state. The representative zone team includes both East Gambier co-coaches Matt Willson and Jayden Eldridge, so the visitors have some big holes to fill in the centre square. The pair’s absence could draw the Cats into the game, but they still have a lot of obstacles in their way.

Ottens and Stokes will add to their WBFL career tallies. But they provided loads of inspiration for the young Cats team, which is looking to make Island Park a stronghold with this weekend the second of five consecutive games at the Victorian venue.

East has kicked a minimum of 15 goals in each of its last four games with many individuals finding the big sticks to form a versatile Bulldogs attack. Young guns Beau Nunan and Shaun Lock have been particularly effective in recent weeks and showing they are not afraid of any opponent in the big league, while Todd Lockwood and Mark Rumbelow are Ayton has been a general in the backline, but will join the likes of Diarmid Cleary constant marking threats. and Damian Wombwell, who have fought East has also been in fine form at the hard in the middle. other end of the ground with North With both sides also scheduled to meet at the same venue just seven days later, restricted to just three goals last week. The likes of Nick Lock, John Forster and momentum is the number-one goal. James Bryne have been unbreakable and been big parts in the side’s success since East should prevail, but it will not be a simple task and Eldridge expects his team the mid-season break. However, any team will struggle to mates to experience just that. replace players of the class of Willson and “It is always tough playing Casterton, they Eldridge and the Cats will pin their hopes never give up,” he said. caretaker coach Derek Ferguson struggles “When you play them, especially at Casterton they are a strong side with their to find a solution. own brand, so it is going to be a tough one Casterton Sandford has shown signs of to get over the line. improvement lately and scrapped hard against the Tigers and Saints in particular. “But we are going in pretty confident and The entire club hopes to ride on the if we do all the right things like hitting the momentum created on and off the field scoreboard, applying tackling pressure by AFL premiership stars Max Rooke, around the ground and playing our brand Mathew Stokes and Brad Ottens last of football, we should get over the line.” week. The Geelong Cats trio were all on the Casterton Sandford team sheet last week and led a spirited performance in atrocious conditions.

The Bulldogs are in hot form having recorded huge wins over North and West Gambier, plus an honorable loss to Millicent in the last three weeks. East appears to have found cohesion and connectivity from one end of the ground to the other. In the middle Riley Janeway and Jake Harrap have stepped up to gain plenty of possessions alongside their leaders, while Dan Christian has been a welcome Hometown favourite Rooke is expected to addition. Casterton-Sandford Blue, White & Red What a huge crowd at the game last week against Millicent with the return of Max Rooke and his mates Matty Stokes and Brad Ottens, it was a valiant effort by the Cats Seniors. Dylan Ayton was named B.O.G and football was the winner on the day. It was also a big day for another big Cat in 350 game superstar Darren Murrell, who has taken some time to reach this milestone as he has made more comebacks than John Farnham! Darren started his footy with the Hawks in the Casterton Coleraine Under 14s, and pretty much by passed the Under 16s to play seniors for Sandford. He won pretty much every award going in his time at Sandford, even getting a premiership medal as a goal umpire! He was the 1999 Best and Fairest in the Reserves, but played half the year in the seniors, with his yellowy green hair standing out in the ruck and attracted votes. In 2002 he decided to have a crack at the Western Border and made the switch to Casterton, some injuries probably let him down but he learnt a lot and went back an even better player to the South West in 2003. When the 2 clubs merged Darren was all in and didn't let his age get in the way of playing a few senior games, a great club man he was awarded life membership in 2018.

V

count on Darren week in and week out, midfielders always knew they would get first use of the ball and w h e n h e we nt fo r wa rd t h e crumbers would be biting at his shoelaces in a marking contest as he would bring the ball to ground. Kurzo wanted to congratulate Darren and say that it has been his p r i v i l e ge to b e p a r t o f t h e wonderful Darren Murrell story. He concluded by saying that Darren is B.O.G. in all facets of life, high praise but true! It doesn't matter where you go, someone will have something nice to say about the big fella whether it be team mate or opponent, well done Darren on 350 games! The Ressies put in a great effort for Darrens milestone, only going down by 22 points and some of the young guns stood out, Nathan Richardson, Casey Jones and Fionn Neeson all getting plenty of the ball, Sam Diegmann stood tall, Cameron Harker impressed and veterans James Killey and Michael Jarrad were solid. This week we are at home again in the catch up game against East, the Doggies are a good bunch, doesn't mean we take it easy against them, no quarter asked for or given, so lets enjoy the day and support or Cats loud and strong, CARN the CATS!!!

FOOTY JENS HOTEL

WITH

The players and spectators who flocked to Island Park will never forget their time watching three Geelong premiership stars getting their knees dirty for Casterton Sandford in the 12th round of the 2021 Bendigo Bank Western Border Football League on Saturday. Casterton’s favourite son Max Rooke made a celebrated return to his junior club and even brought former AFL teammates Mathew Stokes and Brad Ottens along for the ride to create an unmissable occasion. In front of the biggest crowd seen at the country Victorian ground for many years, the Cats appeared inspired by the AFL trio’s presence and kicked the first goal. Eventually Millicent’s fast ball movement proved too strong and the visitors spoiled the party to win by 50 points. But the end result didn’t matter with all of the attention on the Geelong Cats’ return to the footy field in the blue and white hoops. They were easily the most recognizable players on the field with Rooke sporting a rugged fully-grown beard and Ottens’ height towered over anyone else, while Stokes was almost a mirror image from his playing days in the big league. The trio received the full country football experience with the sun out initially before the unrelenting rain and mud set in, while a bright rainbow surrounded the ground during the closing stages to complete the spectacle. Rooke started at half back before making an impact all over the ground on the game and his team mates offering them plenty of advice. However he could not quite play the full four quarters, but still passionately played his part on the bench.

OTTENS & STOKES

Despite sharing the big-man duties with Hamish McCrae and starting at full forward, Ottens was back winning ruck contests just minutes after the first bounce. The 1000th man to represent both Richmond and Geelong enjoyed stints in the centre square and used his long reach to give his team mates first use almost every time even if he finished on his hands and knees. Even after 245 AFL games, Ottens admitted he was unsure how his playing return would pan out, but said Rooke and Stokes plus the club made it an enjoyable afternoon. “I hadn’t played footy in so long, so I was a bit hesitant and unsure what was going to happen, but I just got through and really enjoyed it,” he said. “Max and Matthew are two of my closest footy mates and if I was going to play with anyone it would be them, so it was a lot of fun.” Ottens said he was not anticipating a fairytale victory and was impressed by the way Millicent attacked across the ground. “Max did say it had been a tough year for the club, so I was expecting it to be a tough day and we got pretty comprehensively beaten,” he said. “We looked dangerous going forward, but they are a good team and ran really well moving the ball from one end to the other pretty quickly. “Having a 41-year-old who can’t run probably didn’t help, but it seems like a really good club with great culture.” Playing for the first time in four years, Stokes turned back the clock in his return wearing the blue and white hoops. He had plenty of pace and bounced around the contests, not being afraid of winning tough possessions. Stokes showed off his foot skills with a classy and precise check side pass to a teammate on the boundary line,

while he was the final man to score a goal. In the wet dying stages of the game, Stokes won a free kick and nailed the set shot with class. He said it was an honour to wear Casterton’s blue and white guernsey having revealed his family connection to the club. “My cousin played for Casterton and I have been here a few times over the years, so to be able to come and play with Max and Brad was really enjoyable” Stokes said. “I understood the area and the team’s importance to it, so to come with two close mates, have a bit of fun, see some smiles and give back to the small town is what it is all about.” Reflecting on his performance, Stokes said he was just pleased to received the Sherrin from Otten’s hands again. “By coming here you want to play your part, but you realise the expectation of dominating with 40 possessions is well and truly gone,” he said. “It helps when you play with a ruckman who you have an affiliation with and to get a few touches was nice.” Whilst Ottens and Stokes were doing what they love on the football field, their young families were also running around as they turned the game into a big holiday supporting all aspects of the Casterton community. Stokes said he hopes the trip can make a positive impact at Island Park for years to come. “When you come to these things, you don’t just come to play, you try to help in any way you can,” he said. “To leave a mark and pass on any kind of knowledge to the others is important and what it is all about.” The result may not have been the one the home crowd had dreamed of, it will always be a day that will live long in the memory of the Casterton community.

MATCH REPORTS SOUTH GAMBIER V WEST GAMBIER Despite missing key defender Jade Ri er, West Gambier was s ll able to easily account for South Gambier, securing a 33 goal victory. The Roos stamped their authority on the contest early and had an 11 goal quarter me lead. Sarah Ri er was a strong target under the post, while Lisa McGregor was also prolific in securing scoring opportuni es as the West goalers found good connec on with their med court, Carlee Ransom and Tara Bryant. The Roos were able to play a long driving, fast style of play that they love so much and while South defenders Brandi Bouchier and Ellie Bouchier tried to diminish the scoreboard impact, the amount of ball the Roos enjoyed just made it impossible. Mikaela Horrigan stepped into the goal keeper and the versa le talent showed she has strong defensive skills as well, despite normally patrolling the mid court, and she combined well with Amy Cram, who had a strong four quarter performance that saw her the best player on the court. She put doubt in the South feeders minds and took a number of strong intercepts, both in tough one on one contests but also taking the risk of leaving her opponent and chasing ball elsewhere. Cram and McGregor masterminded the victory with Cram ensuring the defensive end was a well oiled machine that denied the Demons me and space and McGregor was the key outlet pass for the Roos and then she engineered the ball movement in the a acking third, also finishing strongly, ne ng 24 from 26 in the opening three quarters when the damage was done. The ba le in the middle between Bryant and South captain Renee Pluckhahn was a great contest with both running hard offensively but also ge ng some important defensive touches. In the end, though, it was weight of supply – West genera ng 88 scoring opportuni es to South’s 58. Imi Walker was a key for the Demons with her strength on the take and ability to find space in the shoo ng circle, while Brandi Bouchier created as much turnover ball as any goal keeper taking on the height and skill of Sarah Ri er could hope for but in the end, the Roos had all the answers. CASTERTON SANDFORD V MILLICENT While Millicent had way more of the ball in the first quarter, the Cats did their best to stay in touch with accurate finishing from Paige Murrell and Tori Broomby helping keep the scoreboard in check. The Cats also had Tayla Guthrie on court again and while Millicent shooter Tabatha Sanderson shot 16

straight in the opening quarter, Guthrie con nued to make life as tough as she could for the tall Saints goaler throughout the match. Unfortunately for Casterton Sandford the eight goal quarter me deficit was 21 and as they did the previous week against South Gambier, the reigning premiers con nued to pout the foot down and the final margin was a convincing 32 goals. That being said, the third quarter saw the Cats really challenge Millicent. IT was Guthrie’s best quarter, keeping Sanderson to only seven goals, while the home side only lost the quarter by three goals. At the main break, Broomby and Murrell swapped shoo ng roles and it also seemed to make a difference as Zhane Crawford and Scarle Jarrad started to find a way through the Millicent defence with Broomby and Murrell again finishing limited opportuni es accurately. Millicent regained control in the final quarter, although again, the accuracy from the Cats shooters was pivotal, ne ng 13 from 16. There is no doubt the Saints are building towards another finals series, and Sanderson’s form a 5er returning from injury has been impressive, while at the defensive end, Hannah Nitschke, back on court a er a week sidelined by illness, showed her value as she created turnover ball with her ght checking defensive skills and willingness to contest everything. Murrell and her smart moves and crea vity feeding was the best for the Cats – her accurate finishing also cri cal – while Guthrie, who enjoyed a run out at goal defence in the final quarter, showed why the Cats would love to have her available every week. NORTH GAMBIER V EAST GAMBIER It was always going to be a tough, ght contest and it did not disappoint as North Gambier challenged East with the Bulldogs rising to that challenge and remaining undefeated in 2021. As it has been in most matches this season, it was all about the start – with East ge ng the be er of the opening quarter to set up a six goal quarter me lead. Given no more than three goals separated the two teams in the remaining three quarter, that stellar start proved pivotal. Playing without Tarsh McCallum, who is set for a few weeks on the sideline, the Bulldogs started with Kate Dempsey at wing a ack and her composure and smarts always meant, she would

DENTON’S

c er ta in ly n o t b e a liability, having already played in the heat of ba le in the 2019 finals series. Tyne Bosko was back on court a er a couple of weeks’ absence which was a bonus for the Bulldogs. The opening quarter was all about supply with North genera ng 10 scoring opportuni es, with East enjoying double that, and were it not for a perfect eight from eight from Caroline Davey, that early advantage may have been even bigger. Amryn Bosko was on fire for the Bulldogs, shaking off classy defender Maddie Whaites to net 10 of East’s 15 opening quarter goals. In fact, the young shooter proved to be the focal point at mes for the Bulldogs, given so much a en on was on the always dangerous Tenille Gray. It was a game that showed exactly how cri cal Amryn Bosko is to this team because when opposi on defenders throw everything at Gray and stopping her influence, the teenager shoo ng sensa on just keeps ge ng the job done. At the other end of the court, especially in the first quarter, Bo Creek and Lisa Fyfe were able to create enough turnover ball to give East the edge. Creek and Davey have had some classic ba les over the journey and this was another epic duel with Creek keeping the dangerous shooter as quiet as any defender this season with her aerial skills and determina on not to give the Tigers spearhead any easy ball. That being said, Davey, along with the hard running Brianna Walters were North’s best. Davey never stopped presen ng and Walters not only works hard in the a acking third to always be an op on, she also delivers the ball with precision and she also is unassuming in defence, o en winning the ball back in the mid court. Both sides will take something away from the clash. North is ge ng closer and if they can dy up the start will challenge further, while East has been challenged since an easy few opening rounds but con nue to rise to those challenges and they have also worked through significant injuries, which is something team looking to go all the way so o en have to do.

ROUND 8 PREVIEW Casterton Sandford v East Gambier Border restric ons saw this round 8 clash cancelled and this weekend the Bulldogs will head to Island Park to play that rescheduled fixture. The undefeated Bulldogs taking on the winless Cats is an easy clash to p but both sides will have goals in mind when entering the clash. East Gambier started the season domina ng every opponent but teams are star ng to challenge the Bulldogs and as they also face injury challenges, they will be looking to start finetuning and working on back up tac cal plans as the final rounds ck away. For the Cats, the tough 2021 season might be short on highlights but they con nue to improve. They are scoring more than they were at the beginning of the season, They, too, have overcome significant injury and player unavailability challenges and they have blooded a ra of talented juniors who will only benefit from being tested at

of the court as they do in a ack.

the highest level. East wing defender Tyne Bosko, who returned to the court last weekend, will be looking to return to match fitness a er around a month off, so the extra hit out, while the rest of the compe on enjoys a bye, will only benefit Bosko and the Bulldogs defensive unit. For the Cats, it is another opportunity for Zhane Crawford, who has taken ownership of the wing a ack bib in recent weeks, to develop her game against the toughest of opposi on. She has started to really play with confidence, hi ng the circle hard and feeding the ball with accuracy and this weekend is another chance to hone her cra against one of the best wing defenders going around.

Yo u n g C a t s d e fe n d e r C a e l e i g h Humphries will take another step in her educa on as she takes on reigning associa on best & fairest Tenille Gray, while at the other end, Bo Creek, who so o en has to take on tall shooters, will have the challenge of the fast moving, strong driving Paige Murrell in another of the intriguing match ups. You cannot p against an East victory but the Cats will have other benchmarks in mind.

Scarle Jarrad and Emily Hunter going head to head in the centre will be a superb tussle. They are both tough, uncompromising compe tors who do as much damage at the defensive end

In wet and freezing condition – making it difficult to play our normal game of netball that’s for sure. North kept us under control for most of the game, and we allowed them to. Soft passes and incorrect placement of the ball was our down fall. We need to ensure that we use the right pass and direct the ball to where it needs to go and stay focused on this task. We had great defence from Grace & Indi and this kept us in the game. Thank you for Jordy coming on into goals and lifting the team with her presence. Bridget and Lillie had another great game and it is great to see the improvement in the confidence and strength of these girls. Lets regroup this week at training, stay focused and work hard. Hope everyone got warm after the game.

Our A grade team, shown some good patches of play throughout the game, but went down to Millicent 46-78. Best players were Paige Murrell and Tayla Guthrie. A reserve unfortunately had a lost today against Millicent 52-66. Best players were Natalie Rhook and Sharna Fidler

17 & Under, lost 35-63 but continues to show some great Our under 11s, unfortunately patches of play. Best players went down to Millicent, 9-30. Caeleigh Humphries and Charlotte Rice 15 and Under A, unfortunately went down to Millicent’s polished A team 12-66. They continue to put some great passages of play together.

Headed down to North this week we began with a crappy start to the first quarter. By 2nd quarter everyone had stepped up and pushed their game to play their own and how we should’ve played the first quarter. With having a not so good start to the game and horrible weather the girls held their own and actually won the 2nd half. Unfortunately going down by 14 and having to adapt to two very different umpiring ends the girls did well considering. Best players Sharna Mckinnon & Alysia Geraghty. B Grade - East 39 lost to North 41 Best Players - Nicola Smith & Zoee Cornolo Award Winners - (Jens Hotel) Issy Whaites (Creek Livestock) Megan Wilson (F45) Becky Grosser Another close game against North, it’s always been a tough game we have had to bring our hardest. Defence of Issy, Erin and Megan made North work hard to receive and score. Consistency in Zoee and Becky through the Middle never disappoint. Nicola and Gemma were working well together and finishing off scoring well. Let’s finish the season off hard. C Grade - East 35 lost to North 47 Best Players - Daniela Waters & Sophie Drew Award Winners - (Hue Colour) Georgia Quick (Dywers Boxing) Daniela Waters (San Piero) Sophie Drew Girls came off to an even start. Finishing first quarter 9 a piece. 2nd quarter requires some crucial turnovers from Sophie and Lucy. Which were scored. In the third the attacks came out firing and brought score back to one down. North had more legs than us in the final. Plenty of things to work on, great shooting by Dan and defence of Sophie. 17s - East 27 lost to North 41 Best Players - Brooklyn Jean & Grace Ferguson Award Winners - (Nourish Nook) Sophie McClean (Boost Juice) Grace Ferguson (Bakers Delight) Ruby Jacobs 15A’s - East 15 lost to North 47 Best Players - Tonique Buford & Bridget Facey Award Winners - (Fasta Pasta) Tonique Burford (Scroll Queen) Jordy Davis (Boost Juice) Bridget Facey

With having a few key players away the girls had to adapt to having new players on court and different combinations. The girls had goals to achieve each quarter which they did well. All girls played well 13B’s - East 15 lost to North 55 Best Players - Lily McIntosh & Tahni Kemp Award Winners - (OK Pie Shop) Isna Mee (Copenhagen) Lily McIntosh (Bakers Delight) Tahni Kemp Had a tough day out in the rain. They supported each other as a team and worked towards providing encouragement to each other on the court. The girls worked tirelessly in defence to get turnovers. They need to work on minimizing their errors down the court and trust in each other to get the nice passages of play that we know they can do. Keep up the fight as we go into another tough match against Casterton this week. 11’s - East 20 d North 9 Best Players - Olivia Hosking & Sailor McCracken Award Winners - (Kaboom) Olivia Hosking (Intersport) Sailor McCracken (Scroll Queen) Ava Hosking The girls had a fantastic win!
