Back home today to Island Park Cat Fans, back in the sunlight and back onto the winners list hopefully after a less than successful weekend at Millicent, at least the BBQwasgoodtous.
The Under 14 Cats were able to get a couple of goals on the board in a strong third quarter but couldn't quite get over the home team Better players were Billy Rhook, Ayden Nolte, Brody Davis, Toby AuldandNathanRobbins.
The Under 16's came storming home in the last quarter but fell a goal short of the Saints Better players were Oliver Foster, Joshua Jones, Bay McKinnon, Elwood Geary,JeddRhookandCobyRice.
The Reserves welcomed back Senior premiership player Darren Carlin for a game with his boys, Justin, Hamish and Dillan and all were able to walk off the ground, thats the Millicent players I'm talking about. Boof took it easy on the Saints deciding not to break them like he did their fathers, Uncles, oldersiblings.
Better players were Rhys Jolly, Hamish Carlin, Thomas Searle, Kayden Humphries, Brad Millard, FraserBright.
The Seniors got another game under lights but were unable to replicate the previous win, still the
Cats kept trying against a very classySaintsattack.
Better players were Michael Krieger, Damian Wombwell, Nick Schembri, Dylan Ayton and DiarmidCleary

VVansittart Park had our first really wet weekend of footy for 2023 and while we were relatively lucky with therainonSaturday, bythetimethe U12s finished on Sunday, the oval is now comparable with others in the league. Fortunately for the ovals recovery, wearenotbackhomefora month.
Last week it was all about Matthew Chapman playing in his club record 409th senior game. The reserves, led by Chappy who kicked the first 2 goals, got off to a hot start and after a fiercely contested game, the best by far for the ressies for the year, they fell short in a nail biter by 4 points Best players were Will Brown, Jay Turner, Riley Rolph, Sam Shepherd, Tyler Harris and Lacklan Patcel.
Ryans U14s weren’t troubled on the day, having a handy win. Awards weregiventoReidHamilton,Cooper Harris, Sam Baron, Mitchell ChapmanandEthanFlett.
It was a must win game for the U16s to have any chance making the finals. It was a tight contest all day, with Aaron Dallys 5 goals proving the difference. Others to be named in the best were Intha Putt, Alexander Bruce, Kade Allen and Cooper Turner The boys have an 8 point game this week v the Cats and wearehopingtheirformcontinues.
CoachBryanhadanearfulllistinthe U18sthisweekanditshowedonthe park. Goals and best players were
shared, with awards given to Reece McLaughlin, Trae Hamilton, Kade Allen, Deacon Ilsley, Richard KinyabugmaandSebDoody
The seniors was a ding dong battle all day and I am sure the easties consider themselves stiff to lose After a comfortable ½ time lead, we leteastkick6goalsinthe3rdtoonly hold a 2 point lead at ¾ time. Our 1.1 in the last quarter to 0.6 proved to be the difference, and hopefully shocked the boys into not taking their foot of the pedal in the next few weeks. Award winners were Nick McInerney, Jake Schutz, Josh Jenner, Sam Stafford, Sam Egan and TysonChristopherson.
This we venture to Casterton Sandford, with many taking up the bus ride option. Let’s make sure we have wins to celebrate on the way home, which will make for a better trip and allow us to enjoy the upcomingbye.

U14shadanothertoughdayatthe office there's a core of some really good players coming through this side but they're a couple short to compete 4 quarters against the goodsides.
Best players E Clark, J Saunders, A Ferraro, R Grigg, X Farmilo and F Chittleborough.
U16s were close all day against a bigger stronger north side but the boys just couldn't bridge a 3 goal early gap. There doesn't seem to be alot of smiles and positivity in this group at the moment, something the coach and players will have to address or they will keep coming up with same sort of results.
Best players R Lawrence, R Angelino, A McKinnon, C McCracken, B Versteegh and T Grigg.
U18swereoutmatchedalldaybya sidethatjustbatsalotdeeperthan us unlike 16s there seems to be alotmorepositivityandsmilesstill and there seems to be alot of improvement in a core of players that seem to be getting in the best eachweek.

Another week done and dusted and Round 9 is complete.
We had a great start to our ever improving under 14s who are growing and playing better and better each week. We never got the win but the growth in t h i s s i d e h a s b e e n excellent, its great to see the kids improving every week. Our under 16s and 18s came across the bench mark and learnt a few valuable lessons but are remaining positive and have belief. The reserves are continuing on with a hard fought win and never really could put south away and the seniors was the same and it’s a credit to south who have faith in the kids. We are building
West Gambier West Gambier
nicely and have another huge test again with playing Top side Millicent this week. Lets hope the rain stays away and the ovalholdsup.
This week we also have past players day up in he club from 12pm and then down in the beer shed, Be some stories exaggerated no doubt and plenty of laughs. Great to see some old Westies at the club reminiscing from the good oledays.

VWell the swell of pink and vibrancy from Ladies' Day brightened up the arctic and gloomy weather conditions last week. From all reports a stellar time was had by all including the CastertonSandford Ladies who joined the festivities in the Millie Room.
Considering the slippery and heavyconditions, theSeniors had a comfortable 55 point win Bolstered with the return of Harry Tunkin and Eili Redman from Glenelg, the young Saints displayed a confidence in the wintry conditions to create space, overlap and freed up players to share the ball around and converge this hard work into scoring opportunities. Cargs was in brilliant touch and rarely wastes a possession to finish with 2 goals. Frazer chimed in with 2 and Dredgie keeps his tally ticking along with 2 also. Jaxon, Eli, Gidda and Kobe each finished with singles.
Hamish McRae was named best player in his best game for the club; Tunks was dangerous (not as dangerous as Trev on a Saturday night though); Jack Verbena was verycraftywithhisreadingof the play while Fish and Bill had a good day out sharing the ruck duties in a day that
Millicent Millicent Red, Black & White
really suited ducks Ginny was good across half back and many players chimed in with exactly what the team expectsfromthem.
The Magoos had a 65 point win and moved the ball with astonishing poise given the conditions. Pidge continued his very good form and was namedbest,NoSurprisesNat second best, Aussie Fuller next, then Wattsy with his dash from half back , then Brad Tilley Thomas Chant showed his versatility and moved up the ground to sneak into the best players. Watch for his prowess tomorrow on long neck day as Head Chef Thomas in charge of the Rotisserie. Smithers and Muzz were goodalso.
Arguably, the big door prize f o r t h e d a y w a s t h e Stevenandmattduldig Show in the forward line. Matt finished with 4 goals (there's still debate whether a couple of 'passes' were actually misplaced shots on goal) and Digga with 3. We send our respect and gratitude to the Duldig family on Brian's passing and acknowledge his valuable contributions and presencearoundourClub.

“YELLOW and black, were from Tigerland” –andsothefamousfootysonggoes.
But in reality the AFL football club which boasts the Tiger as its mascot - Richmondbears the colours of predominantly black andyellowsash, notyellowandblack–orat leastmostofthetime.
Now this might seem like nit-picking and it probably is but as legend has it, Richmond based its Tiger mascot on the Bengal Tiger whichislargelyyellowwithblackstripes.
With all this AFL rubbish about forcing visiting teams to wear non-clash colours, many here in Mount Gambier could never understand why Richmond took so long to adopt North Gambier’s colours of a yellow jumperwithablacksashasa“clashjumper” when playing away from home. That would havebeentheidea“clash”colours.
Of course, it is now history that when Richmond won their 2017 premiership againstAdelaidetheydidsowiththe“clash” colours of yes you guessed it, yellow jumper andblacksash.
Some Richmond die-hards were appalled with the jumper and even suggested when the premiership photo was taken they revert back to the normal black jumper with yellow sash, but the players would not have it and the yellow and black jumper was preferredandusedforthephoto.
But going back to the Bengal Tiger there is a great story that emanated back in about 1976 when several North Gambier footy officials visited Tigerland in Melbourne and were impressed – let’s say very impressedwith two Bengal Tiger skins which hung famously in the club’s headquarters at Punt Road.
Then North Gambier club manager Bob Potter (who died recently in his 90s) led the expressions of envy and was keen to get a TigerskinjustlikeRichmond’s.
The North officials were later walking down Bourke Street and came across Shopper’s
Paradise store which sold various animal skins – just whattheofficialswerelookingfor
WITH G GRREEEENNWWOOOOD D
The store was fresh out of a Tiger skin but promised they could deliver one in the comingweeks.
Theymentionedapricetagof$1500.
Back home in Mount Gambier supporters weresoondiggingdeepintotheirpocketsto donatetoafundtobuytheTigerskin.
A few weeks later news arrived that the Melbourne store had a Tiger skin, however there was also additional news - there had beenapriceadjustmentof$1000!
The reason for this was the Tiger skin came with a full blown body which had been stuffed. It also had its mouth wide open, teeth well and truly showing, appearing to giveoffthefamousTigerroar
After verification of its authenticity North members dug deeper into their pockets for more cash and the Tiger was collected and placedinaglasscaseforsafe-keepingduring travel.
The Tiger was then placed in the clubrooms, pride of place, in its case and the all-up cost, thatisTigerandglasscase,totalled$3050.
But the Tiger soon got tongues wagging and for years has become an attraction for visitingpatronsandfootysupporters.
One thing that is certain – the Bengal Tiger shows more of North Gambier’s colours than it does when Richmond are playing at home and also North Gambier has the “real thing”–RichmondonlyhastwoTigerskins!
AUTHOR’S NOTE: When I wrote a story for The Border Watch after North announced the Tiger had been purchased back in 1976 and installed in the clubrooms, much of this detailed story above was unknown, especially what North paid for the Tiger Thanks to Maureen Aston, wife of former West Gambier 1959 premiership rover Trevor Aston, she found a “Sun Pictorial” newspaper clipping (Herald Sun today) and much of this article and additional information came from Geoffrey Wright in hisweekly“TheWrightRoad”series.

Sarah Ri er has again had a dominant opening half to set up an 18 goal victory for the reigning premiers over South Gambier atBlueLakeSportsParkattheweekend.
The star shooter ne ed 32 from 38 in the opening half, se ng up a 14 goal half me lead and while the Demons turned the match into an arm wrestle in the second half in a vastly improved performance, they wereunabletomakeinroads.
Given they were taken on the 2022 premiership line-up, the young South lineup is definitely making strides and will con nue to work towards greater consistency and securing more scoring opportuni es for Gracie Dalton and Alyssa Duncan, who again made the most of their opportuni esintheshoo ngcircle.
But in the end, West Gambier was just too strong with clinical ball movement in a ack and a relentless defensive line-up that consistently create turnover ball and make the opposi on front line work over me for everypossession.
The connec on between Lisa McGregor and Ri er, as well as the hard running and pinpoint delivery of Tara Bryant, made life tough for the South defensive line although Sophie Wight and Ellie Bouchier did s ll disrupttheflowfrom meto me.
Megan Reid had a good ba le with Bryant and was a key link player for the Demons, while the accurate finishing of the Demons goalers ensured the Demons stayed in touch, conver ng 46 from 58, but the misses were generally turnovers with Jade Ri er and Amy Cram domina ng the air in the rebounding duels and any cross court aerialapproachesfromSouth.

At the other end, Renee Henke was also on song, missing only two goals for the match, as both sides struggled to create scoring opportuni es courtesy of some impressive full court defensive pressure from both sides.
There was only a three goal difference at half me, with the Tigers having wrestled backthelead, butitwasinthethirdthatthe match was won and done in a 14-6 quarter that set up an 11 goal three quarter me lead.

M I L L I C E N T V CASTERTONSANDFORD
The 78-33 scoreline is no doubt comprehensive as Millicent got the job done against Casterton Sandford at the weekend but for the Cats is was a marked improvement – keeping the Saints to16 less goals than last me they met and also scoringmoreprolificallythemselves.
While the condi ons played a role, adding some more experience to the line-up seemed to pay dividends for Casterton Sandford with the shoo ng combina on of Tori Broomby and Paige Murrell looking dangerous but suffering from some inaccuracy, while the defensive line also addedaveteranwithSharnaFidlertakingto thecourt.
Butasisalwaysthecasewhentakingonthe Saints, Millicent just creates so many scoring opportuni es, built on clinical ball movement in a ack and relentless defensive pressure through the mid court andgoalthird.
Tabatha Sanderson proved unstoppable at the post, ne ng 66 of Millicent’s 78 goals, including 16 straight in the second quarter, while Lisa Duldig was outstanding on the defensive wing, shu ng down the dangerous Madeline Pa on, who was coming off two outstanding performances, and marshalling the defensive third for the saints to ensure the cats struggled to find a waythrough.

ROUNDPREVIEWS
EASTGAMBIERVSOUTHGAMBIER
South Gambier put in a much improved performance last round in its 16 goal loss – matching it with reigning premier WestGambierinthesecondhalf–butit won’t mean much if the young Demons can’t push for victory this weekend againsttheBulldogs.
ThesameappliesforEastGambiermind you, given the Bulldogs only put in one poor quarter against third ranked North Gambiertolosebyonly10.
Reducing errors with ball in hand, accurate shoo ng and consistent defensive pressure across four quarters will be the key in this contest, with both sides, given their new look 2023 lineups, strugglingforconsistency
Each match up looms large in the final washup.
Promising young goaler Gracie Dalton will need to bring a good level of aggression and commit to standing her ground as she takes on tenacious East defender Morgan Amy – who is coming offastrongperformanceinRound9.
At the other end, Sophie Wight will need to be at her ght checking best to limit the opportuni es for East shooter Renee Henke. Wight can dominate the air and her speed onto the ball makes her a good match up for Henke, who is one of the rare moving shooters in the compe on and her long range accuracyisdangerous.
Tarsh McCallum looms large for the Demons as she is such a key link player for East so Tully McShane will need to focus on denying the star wing a ack easy access to the circle’s edge and she will also need to pressure every feed int the hope of producing a rare error from thereliablepremiershipmidcourter.
South defender Ellie Bouchier has the ability to take this game by the throat and she will need to find the perfect balance between denying Casey Horrigan easy ball, given Horrigan is so accurate on the feed, but also ensure she dominates the rebounding duels andalsousesherabilitytoreadtheplay tocreatesometurnoverballforSouth.
The other goal a ack-goal defence ba le is probably one of the most important ba led on the court with South playmaker Alyssa Duncan taking on East coach Bo Creek, who has been a

Southwilldowelltokeeptheballoutof the air and avoid crosscourt balls if they don’t want Creek and Amy to take the gameawayfromthem.
The centre ba le sees two completely different style players going head to head.
East’s Chloe Perryman is strong in air, physical in the contest and a defensive star, while Megan Reid is hard working and simply runs all day, an understated playerwhorarelymakesamistake.
If South harbours any thoughts of finals in 2023, they simply have to win this contest but either way it will be a ght one.

Premiers West Gambier took the round five clash by two goals and the Saints will have been working on ways to combat their 2022 nemesis so it should beamatchfortheages.

Millicent has a few defensive op ons and may well try a few op ons with Por a McRae, Lauren Van Eeden and Kimmi Tincknell all capable of holding downadefensivepostinthecircle.

It really is too close to call when these teams meet but Ri er’s long range conversion would well prove the difference.
CASTERTON SANDFORD V NORTH GAMBIER
CastertonSandfordhostNorthGambier his weekend, coming off an improved performance against Millicent, but knowing things get no easier taking on theTigers.
The Island Park clash sees the Cats facing a similar challenge as they did in Round 9 – a tall shooter with a classy shoo ng partner – so it will again test the likes of Caeleigh Humphries and Ebany Jarrad, who will also be looking for the mid court to apply pressure to theNorthfeeders.
