SOUTH GAMBIER v EAST GAMBIER WEST GAMBIER v CASTERTON SANDFORD MILLICENT v NORTH GAMBIER

GAME PREVIEW Casterton Sandford v West Gambier After almost a month of waiting, the final leg of the 2021 Bendigo Bank Western Border Football League season is ready for take-off. COVID-19 restrictions have slashed the home-and-away segment to just 14 rounds to ensure finals can be completed in time. With just three games left, there is no time for teams to get back up to speed after the long layoff and none are more desperate than West Gambier. The team can still mathematically make September, but must start win every game and hope North stumbles. This Saturday's battle against Casterton Sandford has again been hit by Covid with the current Victorian lock down meaning Casterton Sandford are unable to travel to make this game possible. Three straight defeats have meant West Gambier lost touch with the final four and they hit a new low in the previous clash against South Gambier when only nine points were scored across the entire game. The likes of Lawry Bradley-Brown, Tom Holmes, Todd Lewis and Jesse Pfitzner have carried the team and they will be keen to inspire a victory over the Cats. The Roos have happy memories of the Victorians with a 94-point win back in round 4 where Garret Ha and Josh Schapel both kicked five goals. However, Casterton Sandford coach Kane Forbes would be pleased with his side's progress having compiled its biggest

On an ordinary day we encountered West Gambier at home last week. The ground took the brunt of the bad weather with muddy players on both sides hard to distinguish by full time. The final senior score line showed 8 goals to zero however the game was a much harder contest. Pat Glynn enjoyed the freedom of CHB, Charlie Fisher played well in his first senior game after fantastic reserves form, Mason Hein dominated the rucks, Scott Enderl, Alex Harkness and Dion Stratford in his 200th club game rounded out the best players.

East Gambier

We had another 200-gamer in the reserves with super club man Luke Foran notching up the milestone. Luke is an absolute credit to himself, prepares unbelievably and has dominated this grade all season. No surprise Luke was BOG again in a dominant win along with road runner Elliot Ben and Adam Kuhl who have both hit great form.

The U18s keep sharing it around and playing well. If we can keep this group of boys at South Gambier our future is assured. Big Luke Winterfield is knocking on the door for a senior game and kicked 5 goals along with Alex Ridding who kicked 4. Best players were Dion has been the best club Maxy Lockwood and Harrison man and team mate anyone McBain. could wish for and has had a high quality career for South Good luck to everyone!!! Gambier.

Catch up game done. A big yell out to all the players and parents for being so helpful. A massive yell out to Zena our trainer. 2 hours sleep from work and she battled through four grades of football. With pre arrange holidays, zone and Nick lock putting a ring on his future wife. The A grade still managed to get the job done. Todd Lockwood was on fire up forward kicking 6 goals. Matt Scanlon has made his way home to the kennel and he finished with 3 goals. Harrap had the ball on a string and he was well supported by the Balshaw boys and Burnsy did a great job down in the back line. Well done lads.

ground was Liam Hicks, Jackson, Thomas and Tarps. The boys had a good win and get ready to do it all again this Saturday. With the 18s not playing the 16s took the field, unfortunately they handed the cats their first win for the year. Clarke was named best and goals were kicked by Lilliecrap with 2 majors. The under 14s started off with a win to start the day. Best players were Bruce, McCracken and Gollan.

Gary Ablett is still coming to the club on, he was re-scheduled for 13th of August, but we’ll have to wait again due to the current B grade went much the same and border restrictions. with the A grade having nine out, the B grade found themselves Go Dogs. trying to find a team. Wowee there was some good footy played at Island Park last weekend, every grade had a red hot go, the Under 16's had their first win for the year, the steaks were sizzling, the soup was delicious and the Coffees were hot, the Cats faithful supporters could not complain about the day out. The Senior Cats showed grit and determination in their attack on the ball, tackling was of a high standard, a great effort by this young side and with some fine tuning this week on their disposal may be able to get over the top of the Doggies this week, yes you read correct Cat fans, we welcome East back to Island Park today. Jarrad Smith is playing his 150th club game today and clocked up another birthday yesterday so if you see this great club man and premiership Cat after the game don't hold back on offering your congratulations. The Ressies last week were unlucky not to be closer or even get the win in a low scoring game, a couple of l a p s e s i n c o n c e n t ra t i o n proved costly. Big Petey Hutchins was in form, handing out a couple of don't argues before kicking his 2 goals, Coach Joey McArlein was selling candy and the East boys blood glucose levels were through the roof. James Killey has put his tutu away but his pirouette and bourree were on point as he smashed through his opponents with aplomb. As previously written the Under 16s got their first win for the season, Sam Craig kicking 3 goals for the Cats, Corey Wombwell goes from strength to strength, showing he will be an asset in the senior team for years to come and it was great to have Angus Sweeney back in the side,

showing growth and talent. It was a great team effort by the Cats and it would be great if everyone gets behind them today to get two in a row! So Cat Fans get yourself to the canteen or BBQ, grab some quality tucker and drinks, lube up the old throat and cheer on the mighty Cats, and East fans, you can do the same and after the game join us at the clubrooms, we'd love to have you there, CARN CATS! Thank-you to all our valued sponsors including Nutrien Ag Solutions, Taylor Motors, Glenelg Inn, Bendigo Bank, Aston Newman Timbers, Casterton Secondary College and Foodworks. Upcoming Events: Sunday 8th August: Degustation Luncheon.

In very very cold winter conditions our 14s started us off well to warm us up a little with a bit of cheer. After starting of a bit frosty we hit out straps and got going despite not kicking straight. Toby Stutely continued his great year with another Best on ground, followed by the straight-line runner Reece Barrett. Robert Case, Tate Hammond and Deacon Gilbert rounded out the best players.

our way early. The old fossil himself Tom Dolan was best on ground followed by Sam Vonduve with his hard attack of the ball. Joel Bull never gives up and burrows in and Alex Pearson is never beaten in the back line to play good s o l i d fo o t b a l l . S p e c i a l Mention goes out to Jay Lane who never says No when I ask him to umpire. It’s a thankless job and the hardest for me to fill every week. He stood as tall as he could on Saturday in the hail, rain and wind, and Jay never wants anything for it except a beer after the game. People like Laney make being a president easy (sometimes when he is not drunk). I really appreciate it Jay Lane it’s not all true what Bruce says about you, you are a good man. So when you see him make sure you buy him a beer and say thanks.

The 16s took to the field ready for a good game and a solid hit out. Our boys where disappointed when they left the field as we are better than that. We started of fast with 6 point quarter time lead. But the strong south outfit held strong and grounded down to take a comfortable win in the end. Nate Davey was judged Best on followed by Talon Johnson, Tom Smith, Sam The end result for the A grade was as gloomy as the weather Medhurst and Brad Cowling. on Saturday. Hard day for The 18s took to the field with football beaten by a good side 11 players and needed the in south. The game was not support of the under 16s, we pretty to watch so we will had 11 players step up and leave it at that. Jessie Pfitzner support the club to give all was best on ground with a kids a game. Great work from great game, followed by Tom the under 16s we really H o l m e s w h o w a s i n appreciate it. We obviously everything. The skipper keeps prepared ourselves for an 8- leading from the front in quarter game as we finished L a w r y B r a d l e y B r o w n . of late with stand in coaches Greyhound Kranz was his Lawry and Todd claiming a last usual pesty self followed by quarter win. Aaron Ramsey D a l e Ro b b i n s a n d A d e n ke e p s o n p l a y i n g g o o d Pfitzner. football and pressing his claim for a senior game. Landon Fridge Lefever is another playing great football and is knocking on the door for a late game. Ethan Gladman showing why he is playing in the late game and the young bull in Harry Opperman playing his second game was great. The Ressie’s come off the ground with a reality check and need to regroup again and bounce back hard. South outplayed them and we lost

North Gambier Yellow & Black Despite the weather and senior football result we had a successful Sponsors day. Thanks for those that attended and we look forward to seeing you all more as the season progresses. Your support, which we receive in all sorts of ways, is very much appreciated. Our day started brightly enough, not only has we had the lights on at 8.30am for the start of the U14 thriller, when the boys held on to get over the line by a point. Best players were Aaron Dally, Will Norman, Kade Allen, Luca Roulstone. Iowani Coleman and Jackson Driver. The U16s are hitting their straps and hopefully haven’t left their run to the finals too late. They had a big win with best players being Reece McLaughlin (2 goals) , Deacon Illsley, Brodie Anderson, Jonty Collins, Darcy Arthurson and Zayne Young.

The seniors never got going after copping some late outs and early injuries. East were far too good on the day, leaving us with plenty to work on over the next couple of weeks. Coach McConnell found himself in the centre of the ground where he had a impact. Best players would have been hard to pick after the first 2, with awards given to Declan Kenny, Nick McInerney, Will Stafford, Mitch Whan, Jake Schutz and Nick Moretti. Save the following dates and see our social media for further information; 27/8/21 (Friday) – Major Auction (note change of date) Thanks to our major sponsors, Stuckey Electrical Contractors and KFC.

Coach McInerney can rightfully be Go Tigers. proud of the U18s performance will go a long way to them securing a finals berth. Best players were Brodie Allen (3 goals with some excellent celebrations), Jacob Arthurson, Zach Clark (3 goals), Seth McRae, Ethan Norman and Adam Prosper-Porta. The reserves put in an improved performance but never looked like winning. Best players were Tim Scarth, Jamie Williamson,

V

Campbell Baker, Dean Jamieson and 2 of the U16s backing up, Jack O’Connor and Jacob Arthurson.

Saints took on the Casterton at Island Park, with plenty of buzz around with the Cats bolstered with the inclusion of three re red Geelong premiership stars Max Rooke, Brad O ens and Ma hew Stokes! A story I've been told is that One son of a gun from Millicent and mad Geelong supporter Alex Wesolowski did the running of water in the A grade with his phone in hand just on the off chance he could get a quick selfie with the Geelong premiership hero's. Could have been more for his dad's benefit?? Congrats to the cats for pulling of such a big draw card event for the town and community.

Brings me to a me Millicent hosted some Adelaide Crows players Mark Riccu o and Ben Hart back in the 90's and I was just a young 15-year-old boy back then, excited to see AFL stars and get up and close to meet them, back then instead of selfies it was autographs and handshakes. The Crows pair were inundated with kids a n d b i g k i d D av e W i l l i s possibly trying to get autographs, when Riccu o asked if I could go grab his and Ben Hart's beer for them. So, I've gone to the bar got these beer’s, the place is packed and I'm cu ng my way back through the crowd ge ng bumped into, spilling a li le beer on one person's back, li le more on someone else's, by the me I get back with the beer's they are both half full. Here you go Roo "I say". Wai ng for a bit praise on a job well done. He looks down on me and in a stern voice he says "did you drink my beer li le boy" I've at this stage got very worried that I might be the first kid eaten by an angry AFL player. Ben Hart was a li le more thankful and signed my paper lolly bag and I disappeared out of Riccu o’s sight for his safety. To this day I'm not sure if he was serious or not.!!

Millicent Red, Black & White

A grade boys finished of a stellar month of footy in a danger game against the cats on their home turf with the aid of 3 Geelong premiership players. But the Saints where up to the challenge to run a w ay 5 0 - p o i n t w i n n e rs . S ta r n g t h e m atc h we l l Millicent Took a 17-point win into quarter me keeping Cats to 1 goal while scoring 3. They extended their lead in the 2nd quarter adding a further 4 goals while in defence only conceding 1 again. Even affair in the 3rd and 4th quarter scoring 2 goals each. Clint was easily best on ground domina ng on the ball all day. Chipper second best kicking 5 goals and giving Millicent another avenue to the goals. Cargs again high among the best. Winny in his first game back was superb all day followed by Billy and Finn. Reserves won by 22 points in a tough affair. Best players Dylan Shanks, Ferg, Reilz, Aiden, Withers and Nick Ash. Making my Mark, The Appren ce The under 16 had a big win with Kalan named best, then Toddy, Harry Mules whose ruck work was a feature, Jack Hagge , Simmsy and Eli. Goals to Eli 4, Jackson Bowden and Simmsy 2, and Wez and Toddy with 1. Under 14s had a good game with Casterton coming back a bit in the second half. Kobe kicked 2 with Thwaitsey, Je and Campbell kicking 1 each. Best Players were Kobe, Charlie D, Thwaitsey, Je , Max Hunt and Sam Gronn. Under 12 players had a great day out against the cats with all players enjoying the games. Results not supplied this week.

FOOTY JENS HOTEL

WITH With thousands of games chalked up, few families have left a bigger mark on Limestone Coast football than the Ransoms and their presence is still felt today. Keith Ransom Junior was a leading figure on and off the field at East Gambier across the best part of five decades from 1969. However, his expertise was not just confined to “the Kennel” Ransom also helped breed success at Kalangadoo, Tarpeena, Heywood, Glencoe and West Gambier. As one of four boys fathered by former East Gambier legend, Norwood SANFL player and World War II Air Force veteran Keith ‘Hooker’ Ransom Senior, it was always clear where he would end up. But Ransom Junior said he almost became a Roo, before following his father's footsteps. “I actually trained at West as a nine-year-old because my schoolteacher at the time was a coach at West, so he told me to go to one training session,” he said. “But I felt the brunt of it from my father when I got home and I went back to East.” Ransom first pulled the Bulldogs jumper on as a 10-yearold and cut his teeth at unfamiliar venues such as the showgrounds, Reidy Park and North Primary Schools, plus many memorable neighbourhood games against his mates. It only took eight years for him to make his A Grade debut aged 18 and said a lot of his development was down to the wealth of knowledge around East at the time which enjoyed a golden era of four flags in as many years. “I got to watch a lot of the seniors running around the region playing for East in those days,” Ransom said. “The likes of Dave Clarke, Dave Millard, Gary Lazarus, Doovey brothers, Rob Lawson and Zig Golebiowski to name a few. “It was a pleasure to deal with those professionals and their experience was inspiring. “The best thing that happened to myself and my brothers was we got to play with a lot of those fellas before they retired which was an honour.” After breaking into the Bulldogs' top team in 1977, Ransom helped the team reach the 78 grand final, but could not overcome Hamilton Imperials. He first started as a forward, but was soon thrown into the backline and made the position his own being an “attacking ” full back rebounding the ball out of defensive 50. Ransom plyed in a victorious

Interleague side aged just 19, but it was not all rosy and recalls feeling the full force of former Carlton VFL star John Gill. To keep his spot in the senior side in the fiercely competitive environment, he said he had to push his game to new levels physically and mentally. “Preseason was very hard in those days because you were playing with and against some really handy footballers at the time, so it was pretty tough, hard and physical football,” he said. “I think I had about eight or nine stiches around my face in my first five games, so then I realised I had to start fighting back a bit. “You had to suck it up and give as much as you received to survive.” Following the 1978 defeat and the end of an unforgettable age, East went through a transition period. But the new faces were up to the task and kept the club's success going with back-to-back flags. After the first premiership success in 1982, Ransom was given the captain's badge from coach Rob Beattie and did not let the team down. With some out-of-town players departing, a homegrown side retained the trophy in 1983 and Ransom said the journey to those to flags remains with him to this day. “The standard of football was pretty high and a lot of clubs were bringing in players from out of town, so there was a little bit of money going around,” he said. “So we had to progress from 78 and some youngers players came through the ranks. “We just got really good at what we were doing and I pinched myself when I stood up there with my first premiership medal as a senior player. “We had to earn our way to the grand final, so I was very proud of my team mates.” Having enjoyed so much success before the age of 25, Ransom attracted some SANFL interest. He and his brother gave it a crack in a North Adelaide trial game in 1981, but heard nothing back having been forced to “fend for yourself” against the city players. Two years later Ransom and some team mates ventured back to Adelaide and signed a deal to play for Woodville halfway through the 1983 season. They all met the great Malcolm Blight and signed on the dotted line with Kevin Harris, Mike Woods, Fred and Carl McDonald all enjoying successful SANFL careers. However, Ransom choose to stay home, but said he remains “very happy” with how things panned out. Following an “emotionally tough” knee injury which required a reconstruction and significant rehabilitation process, he took a step outside of his comfort zone at McDonald Park to coach Kalangadoo for a couple of seasons. It was not a role Ransom was unfamiliar with having moved the magnets for various underage teams since he was 19. By 1990, he was back at the “Kennel” again, but his second stint only lasted two years due to a move back to the MSEFL to coach Tarpeena. When 1994 rolled around, Ransom was back in familiar territory wearing the red and black, but it turned out to

RANSOM

be his last A Grade season. “I started playing seniors again under Andrew Bromley, but after 10 to 12 games I told him my time was up,” he said. “It was the pace of the game and I just knew it was time.” Ransom went back to the Reserves and coached the team to the 1996 grand final. Despite his credentials, the A Grade coaching gig at McDonald Park remained elusive, so he packed his bags to mentor the struggling Heywood setup. After a couple of seasons of toil, Ransom brought the professionalism and respect back to the Lions and looked to do the same at West. He arrived at Malseed Park with a team languishing near the bottom of the ladder, so he introduced a “you don't train, you don't play” mantra and the Roos responded brilliantly. West charged its way to the club's first flag since 1971 in a thriller against Millicent and in a beautiful show of respect two young Heywood fans ran up to Ransom and gave him a huge hug, while later that night he received a touching phone call from three tearful Lions' players. Following the drought breaking flag, the Roos jumped to back-to-back titles against North Gambier in 2011 and Ransom said the key to the success was development. “A good friend of mine Mike Winterfield joined as my assistant and we corrected a few things around the club and went from there,” he said. “The team had a lot of hunger and found the professional side of football. “We worked with the juniors and trained on extra nights which inspired the boys to play the football they were capable of and the rest is history. “I remember seeing families taking photos with the trophy together thinking that is what it is all about.” Ransom's four-year stint at Malseed Park contained three grand finals and despite some other clubs searching for his services, he thought it was the right time to step away after the 2013 grand final. The 62-year-old still regularly attends matches and keeps a close eye on the Bulldogs and Roos when he is not on the golf course. Some special sporting moments that have stayed with Ransom include watching Essendon come from behind to steal the 1984 VFL grand final from Hawthorn and attending one of the first SANFL games at a packed Football Park, while he enjoyed singing to America and one of his top bucket list items would be watching the Wallabies take on Wales at Principality Stadium.

MATCH REPORTS SOUTH GAMBIER V WEST GAMBIER Despite missing key defender Jade Ri er, West Gambier was s ll able to easily account for South Gambier, securing a 33 goal victory. The Roos stamped their authority on the contest early and had an 11 goal quarter me lead. Sarah Ri er was a strong target under the post, while Lisa McGregor was also prolific in securing scoring opportuni es as the West goalers found good connec on with their med court, Carlee Ransom and Tara Bryant. The Roos were able to play a long driving, fast style of play that they love so much and while South defenders Brandi Bouchier and Ellie Bouchier tried to diminish the scoreboard impact, the amount of ball the Roos enjoyed just made it impossible. Mikaela Horrigan stepped into the goal keeper and the versa le talent showed she has strong defensive skills as well, despite normally patrolling the mid court, and she combined well with Amy Cram, who had a strong four quarter performance that saw her the best player on the court. She put doubt in the South feeders minds and took a number of strong intercepts, both in tough one on one contests but also taking the risk of leaving her opponent and chasing ball elsewhere. Cram and McGregor masterminded the victory with Cram ensuring the defensive end was a well oiled machine that denied the Demons me and space and McGregor was the key outlet pass for the Roos and then she engineered the ball movement in the a acking third, also finishing strongly, ne ng 24 from 26 in the opening three quarters when the damage was done. The ba le in the middle between Bryant and South captain Renee Pluckhahn was a great contest with both running hard offensively but also ge ng some important defensive touches. In the end, though, it was weight of supply – West genera ng 88 scoring opportuni es to South’s 58. Imi Walker was a key for the Demons with her strength on the take and ability to find space in the shoo ng circle, while Brandi Bouchier created as much turnover ball as any goal keeper taking on the height and skill of Sarah Ri er could hope for but in the end, the Roos had all the answers. CASTERTON SANDFORD V MILLICENT While Millicent had way more of the ball in the first quarter, the Cats did their best to stay in touch with accurate finishing from Paige Murrell and Tori Broomby helping keep the scoreboard in check. The Cats also had Tayla Guthrie on court again and while Millicent shooter Tabatha Sanderson shot 16 straight in the opening quarter, Guthrie con nued to make life as tough as she could for the tall Saints goaler throughout the match. Unfortunately for Casterton Sandford the eight goal quarter me deficit was 21 and as they did the previous week against South Gambier, the reigning premiers con nued to pout the foot down and the final margin was a convincing 32 goals. That being said, the third quarter saw the Cats really challenge Millicent. IT was Guthrie’s best quarter, keeping Sanderson to only seven goals, while the home side only lost the quarter by three goals. At the main break, Broomby and Murrell swapped shoo ng roles and it also seemed to make a difference as Zhane Crawford and Scarle Jarrad started to find a way through the Millicent defence with Broomby and Murrell again finishing limited opportuni es accurately. Millicent regained control in the final quarter, although again, the accuracy from the Cats shooters was pivotal, ne ng 13 from 16. There is no doubt the Saints are building towards

another finals series, and Sanderson’s form a 5er returning from injury has been impressive, while at the defensive end, Hannah Nitschke, back on court a er a week sidelined by illness, showed her value as she created turnover ball with her ght checking defensive skills and willingness to contest everything. Murrell and her smart moves and crea vity feeding was the best for the Cats – her accurate finishing also cri cal – while Guthrie, who enjoyed a run out at goal defence in the final quarter, showed why the Cats would love to have her available every week. NORTH GAMBIER V EAST GAMBIER It was always going to be a tough, ght contest and it did not disappoint as North Gambier challenged East with the Bulldogs rising to that challenge and remaining undefeated in 2021. As it has been in most matches this season, it was all about the start – with East ge ng the be er of the opening quarter to set up a six goal quarter me lead. Given no more than three goals separated the two teams in the remaining three quarter, that stellar start proved pivotal. Playing without Tarsh McCallum, who is set for a few weeks on the sideline, the Bulldogs started with Kate Dempsey at wing a ack and her composure and smarts always meant, she would certainly not be a liability, having already played in the heat of ba le in the 2019 finals series. Tyne Bosko was back on court a er a couple of weeks’ absence which was a bonus for the Bulldogs. The opening quarter was all about supply with North genera ng 10 scoring opportuni es, with East enjoying double that, and were it not for a perfect eight from eight from Caroline Davey, that early advantage may have been even bigger. Amryn Bosko was on fire for the Bulldogs, shaking off classy defender Maddie Whaites to net 10 of East’s 15 opening quarter goals. In fact, the young shooter proved to be the focal point at mes for the Bulldogs, given so much a en on was on the always dangerous Tenille Gray. It was a game that showed exactly how cri cal Amryn Bosko is to this team because when opposi on defenders throw everything at Gray and stopping her influence, the teenager shoo ng sensa on just keeps ge ng the job done. At the other end of the court, especially in the first quarter, Bo Creek and Lisa Fyfe were able to create enough turnover ball to give East the edge. Creek and Davey have had some classic ba les over the journey and this was another epic duel with Creek keeping the dangerous shooter as quiet as any defender this season with her aerial skills and determina on not to give the Tigers spearhead any easy ball. That being said, Davey, along with the hard running Brianna Walters were North’s best. Davey never stopped presen ng and Walters not only works hard in the a acking third to always be an op on, she also delivers the ball with precision and she also is unassuming in defence, o en winning the ball back in the mid court. Both sides will take something away from the clash. North is ge ng closer and if they can dy up the start will challenge further, while East has been challenged since an easy few opening rounds but con nue to rise to those challenges and they have also worked through significant injuries, which is something team looking to go all the way so o en have to do. CASTERTON SANDFORD V EAST GAMBIER The scoreline was s ll lopsided but the Casterton Sandford line-up walked away from their loss to Casterton Sandford knowing they have significantly improved. The last me the two met, East Gambier

scored 95 goals and while it might seem like a small win – the Cats kept the Bulldogs to 69. Missing Tarsh McCallum, who is in a race against me to return in me for finals, the Bulldogs looked a li le unse led offensively and the opening quarter was a quarter of turnovers for both sides as the young Cats defensive line made life tough for East Gambier and Lisa Fyfe, Bo Creek and Tyne Bosko ensured there was no easy ball in the Cats offensive third. Paige Murrell stood tall for the Cats in the opening quarter, using her well med moves and ability to find space where there is none to earn plenty of ball and, most importantly, conver ng accurately, ne ng nine from 10. The quarter me scoreline of East eight goals in the clear, was as close as the Cats would have expected to get, with Fyfe and Creek ensuring it was s ll a comfortable scoreline with their ability to win the ball back, especially any cross court offerings. The second quarter saw the Bulldogs find their mojo as Amryn Bosko and Tenille Gray started to dominate, conver ng 20 from 23 as a combina on as they started to find each other in space with monotonous regularity. The issue at the other end was supply as the Cats only generated seven scoring opportuni es, conver ng five. The second quarter scoreline was not just due to the stunning efforts of Amryn Bosko and Gray but the smothering defensive efforts of the East back three and clearly best on court Emily Hunter. The intercep ons and deflec ons set up the scoring opportuni es and the Cats struggled to find a way through. Both teams swung changes at the half with East 23 goals clear. The Cats just slightly rejigged their line-up while s cking with the same seven, while the Bulldogs gave Alysia Geraghty her first taste of A Grade ac on at goal shooter while moving Amryn Bosko, who had been outstanding in goal shooter, ne ng 16 from 19, to the a acking wing to take over from Casey Horrigan. While the scoreline s ll heavily favoured the Bulldogs in the second half, the Cats showed great signs, The defensive group of Caeleigh Humphries, Ebany Jarrad and Claire Foster con nue to improve and they generated touches and intercep ons that ensured East did not have it all their own way. Tyne Bosko had a third quarter to remember as she con nually won the ball back but her ability, across four quarters, to deny the Cats feeders easy access to the circle’s edge was pivotal in the final wash up. Interes ngly, the same two sides meet this weekend and so the Cats, while only having a week to iron out some wrinkles, will be looking to again improve against the compe on benchmark. The usual suspects were outstanding for East with Hunter, Gray and Fyfe se ng their usual high standards while there were plenty of posi ves for the Cats. The debut of Mikayla Hutchins was a revela on. The young mid courter showed no signs of being overwhelmed by the creden als of her opposi on. Despite being undersized she contested everything, she ran to the right spots and she delivered the ball, for the most part, with accuracy and confidence. Charlo e Rice also con nues to improve and the three young defenders never take a backwards step but are also star ng to find be er posi oning and the game smarts required to stay in play and not a ract whistle.

ROUND 9 PREVIEW SOUTH GAMBIER V EAST GAMBIER East Gambier was a li le rusty when it took on the Cats on July 10, despite s ll recording a strong victory, and they will have been working hard on the training track to get their mojo back as finals approach. S ll missing Tarsh McCallum, Kate Dempsey would appear to be the likely replacement and she has slo ed into this frontline many mes before, proving her worth at the top level. With Tenille Gray and Amryn Bosko forming the most prolific shoo ng combina on in the compe on, South defenders Brandi and Ellie Bouchier will have their work cut out for them. The East shoo ng duo have been sharing the shoo ng du es so neither can be le una ended or they will do significant scoreboard damage. The Bouchier defensive combina on have proven to be tough to combat but with Emily Hunter hi ng the circle hard and delivering the ball with precision, much will depend on the Demons mid court slowing down the usual fast flowing ball movement favoured by the Bulldogs, especially with Tyne Bosko and Lisa Fyfe star ng those offensive runs with their strong centre third drives. Renee Pluckhahn is a good match up physically for Hunter and that centre posi on will be a ba le to watch. Fyfe, Bosko, Hunter and Bo Creek, were certainly on fire for the Bulldogs on July 10, con nually crea ng turnovers and South will need to be safe with ball in hand and show pa ence in ge ng the ball into shooter Grace Edwards and athle c goal a ack Lara Munro. You cannot mount a case for the Demons to upset the Bulldogs

and you would expect the more se led and experienced East line-up to secure a lop sided victory. NORTH GAMBIER V MILLICENT Last me the two met it was a nailbiter and there is no reason to think it will not be another arm wrestle. Both sides revolve their game plan around tall goal shooters – North with experienced star Caroline Davey and the Saint's Tabatha Sanderson, who is so strong under the post. Por a McRae will no doubt get the job on Davey and it was last me the two sides met that the young defender first showed how ready she was for a permanent A Grade berth, while at the other end Maddie Whaites will use her ability to read the play and dominate the front posi on to try and quell Sanderson. The issue both keepers have is the precise delivery that will come from those out the front of these two prolific shooters. McRae will combine with Kimmi Tincknell, Lisa Duldig and Hannah Nitschke to slow the delivery into Davey, as they look to shut down the pace of Brianna Walters and Ellen Brown, while at the other end the close checking Noni McConnell and Mel Renko will control what happens in the mid court and defensive goal third to ensure Demi Verbena, Paige Nitschke and Lucy Denton cannot move the ball with their usual speed. Millicent have been challenged a number of mes in 2021 but have only slipped up against the undefeated Bulldogs and they will again prevail in a ght tussle. W EST G A M B I E R V C A ST E RTO N SANDFORD With the contest looking unlikely to

proceed at the me of print due to t h e c u r re n t Victorian lockdown, we’re hopeful this contest can be rescheduled. West Gambier haven't hit the court since July 3 and Casterton Sandford since July 10 so this weekend will be as much about blowing out the cobwebs as anything. The young Cats were really star ng to hit their straps and improving every ou ng but the inability to train and play for the majority of the past month will not have helped that development. Defenders Claire Foster, Ebany Jarrad and Caeleigh Humphries will look to make life as tough as possible for the Roos frontline but with the experience of Lisa McGregor and Carlee Ransom, the hard running of Tara Bryant and the strength on the hold and accurate finishing of Sarah Ri er, it looms as a tough day out. Bryant's ba le with Scarle Jarrad through the middle will be intriguing with both working hard defensively and offensively. The Cats frontline will need to be pa ent and careful with ball in had with Amy Cram, Jade Ri er and Nikeisha Facey forming a formidable back three and they work well together to shut down me and space for opposi on line-ups. Tori Broomby will lead the frontline with her experience and smarts and finishing accurately will be the key to staying compe ve. West should record a comfortable win but if the Cats are able to pick up somewhere near where they le off they will certainly ensure West earns the premiership points.

challenges with injury and player unavailability have done a great job - in fact both have even taken the court - just to show the girls how it is done!!! Both teams are finals bound and we look forward Belinda has been unbelievable to seeing how these newbie working with our A Grade girls and coaches continue to get the job while there have been some done. lopsided scoreboards there have also been a stack of positives. She has mixed up effort. training, worked on individual With five games to go this is as good a time as any to send a big thank you to all our coaches and umpires - the season doesn't go on without them.

Tracy is doing a great job with the A reserve line-up, given how many new faces are in the line-up and the fact it is a group that have never played together before when a lot of clubs' A Reserve teams have moved through the ranks together at a club. Balancing the junior talent and the senior players and developing the players individually and as a team has been challenging but Tracy has risen to that challenge. Larnka and AK took on the B and C Grade teams and with a lot of

skills and team play and her lineup is also set for finals. Someone else who is getting the job done is president Andrew Matheson - working hard on the third court project and a number of funding opportunities to get the lights upgraded... A reminder to everyone about tonight's quiz night and also to get back to Belinda about the senior bus trip to Casterton on July 31.

Congratulations to Gemma Hunt who received her C Grade netball umpiring badge!

A Grade - East 69 d Casterton 27 Best Players - Emily Hunter & Tenille Gray Awards Winners - (Athlete's Foot) Lisa Fyfe (Lima & Co) Bo Creek (Beautie Studio) Emily Hunter We started the game a little flat off the mark, but our defensive efforts all over the court saw us maintain a small lead. Once we settled in attack, and played safer netball, we built on our lead. It is hard to maintain our intensity each week, but with finals in sight, our challenge is to maintain the same intensity we had round one A Res - East 48 lost to Casterton 58 Best Players - Casey Horrigan & Tori Kitschke Award Winners - (Hue Colour) Issy Lamb (Salts Of the Earth) Tori Kitschke (Dwyer's Boxing) Sharna McKinnon B Grade - East 26 lost to Casterton 40 Best Players - Nicola Smith & Brooklyn Jean Award Winners - (Creek Livestock) Issy Whaites (Nourish Nook) Brooklyn Jean (San Piero) Ruby Jacobs The girls played very well considering they had a few players out. Little errors cost them the game but they never dropped their heads and continued to play their best, supporting each other. The juniors Brooklyn Jean and Ruby Jacobs stepped up and created havoc in defence! Playing smarter and looking after possession will get you guys over the line next time.

East Gambier Red & Black A great game played by all 7 girls. Excellent shooting by both goalies with great feeding & driving out of defence. Our defensive pressure & 2nd attempt were good seeing us win the turnovers. Our transition from defence to attack was great. Good to see this all coming together. Well done & keep up the good work 15B's - East 40 lost to Casterton 45 Best Players - Millie Button & Tahlia Geraghty Award Winners - (Natural Born Grillers) Tahlia Geraghty (Boost) Tonique Burford (Copenhagen) Bridget Facey We knew this game was going to be tight and tight it was. Each team winning 2 quarters each. Unfortunately Casterton won the 2 quarters with slightly higher scores and took the match by 5 goals. Everyone played a great game with some strong leads, defensive pressure and excellent shooting. Incorrect Passing options and some bad passes is what let us down. Mental fitness is what we need to lift and work on here to improve this. we are back this week to play Casterton again, so lets see if we can improve on the above and take our game that one step further. well done girls. Really happy with our game as a whole. A few players missing meant we had a few out of position but adapted quickly. Our drive and ball movement out of defence was a lot better than previous weeks and our space and work rate in attack allows us to score off a lot of turnovers. Let's back it up again with another strong game this week! 15A's - East 51 d Casterton 31 Best Players - Tonique Burford & Matilda Lamb Award Winners - (Kaboom) Matilda Lamb (Scroll Queen) Jordy Davis (McDonlads) Tonique Burford

North Gambier Yellow & Black A Grade North 36 vs East 44 A slow start saw East take the lead due to unforced errors by North. The girls chipped away and were consistent throughout the game. The girls took away some important points and team goals from that game. The break will be a good opportunity to prepare for the upcoming vital part of the season. Best Players: Caroline Davey ( The Nourish Nook) and Noni McConnell (The Nourish Nook) A Reserve North 58 vs East 42 North started strongly in wet conditions and were able force some turnovers early in the first quarter. East again made some changes in the defensive end and this slowed North’s attack down in the last quarter. Even though North had two players out this week, they still won convincingly by 16 in the end.
