Millicent’s Tony Hodgens was another of that famous Millicent team who had come from SANFL ranks in Adelaide.

He came to Millicent in the early 1950s and remained there for many years, playing with theclubwellintothe1960s.

Kevin Schultz who would later play for West at full forward was in the Millicent forward pocket and his strength, marking skills gave the Magpies a twin prongedattack. If one was looking at comparisons to players of later eras, Neil McDonald had a similar build and played in a similar way to North star centre half back Doug NortonSmith or perhaps South star Garry Sims. McDonald was a very sound overhead mark with great judgement and hadalongpenetratingkick.

Bubba Stevens was a brilliant, speedy, flashy half forward who was capable of kicking a bag of goals if not watchedcarefully Aswellasbeingaregularinter-league player, he was runner-up to Peter Marrett in the league goal kicking award in 1960 with 41 goals, showing that evenasheenteredtheveteranstageofhiscareerhestill hadwhatittooktobeachampion.

He was one player opposition coaches put in a lot of time to try to curb his influenceinmatches. What was interesting was that Gordon Hutchesson who was 1955 Millicent president would later become president of the Western Border Football League in the 1960s. He was the first of many league presidents who saw the benefit of the WBFL playing in inter-league championshipsinVictoria.

East Gambier has had West Gambier covered in their three meetings this season but the one thing in the Roos favour is they have built nicely over the season and are playing their best netball of 2022 at the business end of the season.

Chelsea Tremelling adds to that challenge with her speed and vertical leap at wing defence, while Anna Bosco also works hard defensively as well as dominating in attack as she hits the circle hard and feeds accurately, along with Aleisha Pearson and Bryna Kuller who also take on feeding roles. East's mid court is all class with Teagan Gray in the middle, Brooke Hicks on a wingandrisingtalentKate Dempsey on the other wing so whichever mid court can get on top will go a long way to deciding theresult.

They will be looking to find a way through the Roos defensive line of Racheal Langford, who is the general of the West back third and Taylor Wilson Smith, who is especially damaging in theair. She will have to put some time into Davey, though, as the young Roo is not afraid of the long range shot and has been in good formwithheraccuracy.

Predicted to be missing State goal shooter Annelise Janssen this weekend, Millicent still has an embarrassment of riches with Abby Denton all class in the shooting circle and probably set to team with Ella Easterby, whose speed and ability to get defenders heads turning will ensure the scoreboard keeps tickingover.

Defensively Alysha Coon and Kate Dyson will not be u p s e t i f J a n s s e n i s unavailable but they know they will need to be at their best and take every opportunity to create turnover ball if their team is tobeachance. They contest everything, p r e s s u r e t h e s h o t relentlessly and rebound strongly so North will have little room for error in deliveryoraccuracy They will also rely on pressure out the front from the likes of Brooks, Jones, Tentye and Morello so the ball is delivered into the shooting circle under pressure, perhaps forcing errors. At the other end of the court, A Grade goal keeper Portia McRae anchors the defensive end and her partnership with Lauren VanEeden, who has also tasted A Grade action this season, is a tough one to crack.

South has plenty of quality in its line up as well and it has taken most of the season but they have now settled on its strongest combination.

Kalli Brown leads the defensive line with her never-say-die attitude and ability to read the play, while Kate Batten is a tight checking defender who allowsnoeasyball.

The shooting combination of Ava Norma and Lauran Norman worked well together against the tough Cats defence in the 1st semi final and they will need to work together again to open up space for each other. The Saints will advance to what will hopefully be another epic battle with South Gambier in the grand final. Millicent is coming off a high quality 2nd semi final and it is hard to mount a case for North Gambier, given the quality and experience of the Saints line-up.

Themidcourtisalsoriddled withhighqualitytalentwith Daisy Tunkin, another regular in seniors for the Saints, Sophie O'Connor and Maya Tarrant, who are both tight checking wing defenders, and Lillie Paul andSaigeGibson, whodrive hard and deliver the ball withprecision.

Shooting accuracy will be a key in this battle with the Saints prevailing in a tight one.

At the other end of the court

The Tigers also have speed andqualityinthemidcourt, with Coco Mackereth starring in the knockout semi final, Alyce Tentye as tough as they come, Gianna Morello an unassuming but effective attacking option andHayleeBrooksandZarly Jones bringing tight checking to the defensive wing and that quintet will need to be at their best to quell the influence of their Saintsopponents.

It means both teams will need to apply the defensive pressure up the court to deny easy ball to the respectivespearheads.
