GAME PREVIEW Casterton Sandford v Millicent The 2021 Bendigo Bank Western Border Football League has thrown everything at Casterton Sandford, but some good news will finally arrive in round 12 this Saturday. The winless team has been bullied by its opposition and injuries each week, but Island Park is the place to be as the club welcomes back none other than favourite son Max Rooke. Before Rooke became the cult figure at the Geelong Cats and winning the 2007 and 09 AFL premierships, he developed his game at Casterton as a junior. At just 17 he made his A Grade WBFL debut and will resume his county football career with years in the AFL system and three grand finals behind him. It will be an emotional moment for Rooke and the town when he runs onto Island Park again, but he will not be the only big name to lookout for. He also managed to entice premiership team mates Matthew Stokes and Brad Ottens to come out of retirement and wear blue and white hoops of a different kind. Just like Rooke, Ottens is a member of Geelong’s Hall of Fame and was the ruckman in 2007, while Stokes kicked more than 200 goals for the club. Casterton Sandford coach Kane Forbes will welcome no less than 580 games of AFL experience with open arms and hopes the trio’s expertise can inspire his battling team to something special.

of tackling hard. Looking at the prospect of facing the likes of Rooke, Stokes and Ottens, Gallio said he is confident his team can win the battle with current gameplan. “Around 580 AFL games and three premierships are pretty handy additions to your team, but it another challenge for our young side and we are looking forward to it,” he said. “I have had the chance to play with some AFL players in Darwin and it is pretty cool. “It will be a great spectacle and there is a buzz around the group, but we will prepare the same.”

North Gambier Yellow & Black Today we welcome East Gambier and our sponsors for our Annual Sponsors day. We really appreciate our sponsors support over the years, particularly the last 18 months, and especially our Major Sponsors, Stuckey Electrical Contractors and KFC. Please enjoy our hospitality as a small way of us saying thanks. Last week it was good to have the border open allowing Casterton Sandford over, who are building up for an exciting week this week with some handy inclusions of Rooke, Ottens and Stokes. Hope it all works out for you. We had a good day in the cold, but with little rain. The seniors had a convincing win in the end, but the score probably didn’t reflect how competitive the game was early and we are fortunate Casterton Sandford did not take all of their chances in the first quarter. We had stand out performers in Brad Stafford (who continues his outstanding form), Henry Gould (who played everywhere and is getting better every week). Other best players were, Justin McConnell (5 goals), Dylan Munn, Toby de Wit, Will Stafford and Bret Shepherdson.

The U16s having been sticking together and had a big win. Casterton Sandford worked hard during the week to put a side on the field and we thank them for same. Best players were Reece McLaughlin, Brodie Anderson, Darcy Arthurson, Mackye Baron and Jonty Collins. The U14s had a good day with some players playing for the opposition and others finding themselves in foreign positions throughout the game. Best players were Will Norman, Zac Cordell, Aaron Dally, Kade Allen, Iowani Coleman & Cooper Turner.

East Gambier Red & Black

Hello readers and what a week in footy. East hosted West on the weekend and there was not much joy on the football front on Saturday. With only 2 out of 5 grades getting the chocolates.

Please get yourself to the club. Gary Abbbbblettt still is coming just waiting for a date, which is hard to pencil in with these uncertain covid times, but it’s looking to possibly be in late August sometime at this stage.

Thank you to the volunteers that did your bit for the club. With the Stay safe and see you all at the club moving forward we need as footy. much support going forward and that starts this week with the mouse cup/auction night at the kennel.

Save the following dates and see our social media for further information; 17/7/21 – Flight Night 31/1/21 – Junior Fluro night 6/8/21 (Friday) – Major Auction 7/8/21 – Tigers Ball Thanks to our major sponsors, Stuckey Electrical Contractors and KFC. Go Tigers. U16 Will Ellis

Other highlights was the first game of Tyler Harris, our 8th U18 debutant for the year and Justin coaching his 150th game, with our stats man advising he has a 75% winning record and he had led us through our most successful era. The reserves returned to the winning table, pulling away after an even first half and giving them a sniff of a finals berth. Best players were Tom Flett (knocking on the door of the seniors, Jordan Mansell (getting fitter each week), Dean Jamieson, Brayden Howard and Ben Tremelling.

We are very lucky to live and play in This week we play the Saints and all the town that we do, away from the going well we will have a favourite hustle and bustle, away from the Cat in Max Rooke running around worries that our city counterparts with a couple of his mates in have. We would like to have a few Matthew Stokes and Brad Ottens, more young people about and jobs these 3 blokes will be able to pass on to accommodate them but that is some of their Knowledge to our just how it is at the moment. young Cats and this will be an invaluable opportunity for those Last week we travelled to Vansittart who get to play and watch this trio in Park to play the Tigers, it wasn't a action. very successful trip but there were plenty of good signs from all grades So get behind the boys today Cat that we can build on. Contested ball Fans and cheer loud and proud, was one of the positives as our CARN the CATS!!! young Cats won plenty of it. Kane, Dylan and Co. have got the team Thank-you to all our valued sponsors building for the future and the team including Nutrien Ag Solutions, is listening. Taylor Motors, Glenelg Inn, Bendigo Bank, Aston Newman Timbers, An aside to the footy though was at Casterton Secondary College and the BBQ at North, Millicent has been Foodworks. the home of the Super Snag for as long as I can remember but imagine my surprise when I attended the Vansittart Park BBQ and there advertised was a Super Snag, I was confused but at the same time curious, could there really be two Super Snags in the WBFL? We once had two Tigers, and almost two Bulldogs, (What is Impish about a Bulldog? Never understood that, Wimps I could have understood) But Two Super Snags, well I had to try it to find out. I was pleasently surprised by the North Super Snag but it was not as good as the Millicent version but still ok, perhaps the Tiger Snag or hunky dory Snag would be a better name and possibly save confusion or a possible lawsuit, unsure as to whether Millicent have a copyright or not.

Last weekend would’ve been one of the big weeks for our footy club, a me when Ash and the Ballarat boys make their annual trip to our home ground to celebrate the life of Ash’s daughter Millicent. In a sign of the current day to day, Ash and the lads were unable to get together as they have for the past 15 seasons and couldn’t make it over to us. The Millicent Falla “Most Courageous” award is one of the highest honours we have as a club and Cargs was a well-deserved recipient on the day when a fair few lads flew the flag high.

Ash and his mates involvement in the MFNC and the respect Millicent earned in her short me was s ll on show throughout the game. I believe the Ash and the boys would have really enjoyed and taken something away from the courage, endeavour and spirit we showed in the senior win.

Millicent Red, Black & White start in the first quarter Millicent Took a 3-point lead into quarter me. A er that South fitness and skill took over kicking 6 in the next quarter. Taking a handy 33-point lead into half me. Millicent ressies ba led hard in the 3rd and kicking a goal and holding South to a goal. But South to strong in the End and won by 41 points. Take a bad 2nd quarter away and the ressies were very compe ve for 3 quarters. Lot to like the way Withers has responded coming back to the ressies side with a best on ground performance, Hugh also running all day and gathering heaps of the pill, Joey doing all the grunt work at the bo om of the packs next best followed by Narnie who kicked 3 goals and presented all day up forward, also Gizzy and James Wa s played well. Making my Mark The Appren ce

Talking about winning, The A grade boys coming up against a undefeated South Gambier ou it came away with an impressive win. Kicking with the aid of the breeze in the first quarter, the Saints boys piled on 7 goals to 1 in what was their best first quarter of footy all year. Second quarter going into the wind they managed to keep South to 1 goal and kicked 2 goals themselves. Taking a commanding 47-point lead into half me. Third quarter was a ma er of me before South showed why they were undefeated and came out and kicked the first goal many believing this was going to be their comeback, but to Millicent’s credit they again gained control with Finn domina ng the ruck dual and Millicent on ballers Cargs, Gallio and Cream on top. And Zac, Billy, S a m G ray, Ka d e B ra d l e y a l l domina ng in defence. Last quarter Millicent again outscored South into the breeze playing their best 4 quarters of footy for some me. So many players contributed and was a great team effort. Running out winners by 78 points Best players were Finn, Zac McGuiness, Billy Shanks, Kade Bradley, Kalan Shanks and Sam Willis. 5 goals to Gene, 3 to Harry Tunkin and Sam Willis. 2 to Chipper and singles to Lang, Frazer and Gallio Reserves come up against an unbeaten South and a er a good

The Under 18s had a pre y tough day at the office and from the start struggled to get out of the blocks and never really stemmed the flow of south goals all day. Toddy kicked the only major and be er players were Ma Varcoe, Birthday boy Shanksy, Toddy and Nick Joy. Under 16s on the other hand came out with a bit of fire in the belly from the first bounce and ran out solid winners by 23 points. Best on for the day was Kalan with Harry Gibbs rock solid down back all game, followed by Eli, Snowy, Wezza, Simsy and Harry Damhuis. Goals to Wezza 3, Shanksy 2, Eli, Simsy and Je with 1 each. Under 14 lads were solid winners also with Kobe kicking 4 and earning BOG. Others to go well were Dyl Sigston, Charlie D, Je , Maxy Hunt, Thwaitsey, Toddy, and Campbell Hateley. Goals to Kobe 4, Campbell 3, Je 2, Wilson, Hunt and Kenny 1 each. 12 A went down by 9 goals with be er players, Naite, Louis, Lenny, Cur s, Klaye, Henry and Cruz. 12 C, Goals to Brax 4, Arlie and Levi 1. Be er Players, Brax, Ryder, Levi, Dexter, Campbell M and Axel. Under 8s, Be er players on the day were Dexter Ross, Kobe McGrath and Jed Sunderland with awards to Hunter Hughes, Mark Rigney and Oscar Dodd.

South Gambier Red & White Football is about challenges and t h at ’s w h at M c la u g lin Pa r k presented last Saturday. Full credit to President Joel Redman and coach Clint Gallio for their club’s improvement at all levels handling us our first loss at senior level this season – and as losses go this was a fair hiding. There was no room left for any of our players to hide so we’ll lick our wounds and hopefully learn some lessons. On a tough day Ethan Chuck stood up manfully, Scott Enderl and Dane Handreck didn’t stop trying and the margin would have been e ve n g re ate r w i t h o u t D i o n Stratford and Chris Williams in the backline. On a brighter note congratulations to 4th generation player Noah Sims (son of Darren and Yvette, grand-son of Robert and Maureen) who played his first game and showed some real promise. Noah will play a lot of football at WBFL senior level and higher in future. The ressies continued their winning run albeit with a reduced

V

West Gambier

margin. Charlie Fisher has been in superb form as shown by his 6 goals and BOG performance, Luke Foran has been immense for the group and Henri Capewell and Jimmy Patzel are very smart footballers.

Last week saw East bookend the day with solid wins against our Under 14’s and Seniors, however West took the bragging rights on the day with 3 solid wins in the Under 16’s Under 18’s and Reserves.

The biggest margin for the day was in the U18s and knowing Coach McGregor his foot won’t leave the accelerator any time soon. James Snell is talented and tough young player, Elliot Fisher kicked 5 goals, Luke Winterfield is flying, Ethan and Mitch Sims excelled and Hamish McBain was very good.

T h e U n d e r 1 6 ’s w e r e v e r y impressive with the fast run of Joe Judd and Brooklyn Winterfield through the midfield and Henry James up forward again playing some great football and Brad Cowland down back holding things together.

Both the U16 and U14 teams went down to Millicent. While the opposition earned their welldeserved wins, our club’s policy of putting participation before premierships and running with 2 teams in these grades is getting a lot of game time into a lot of lads which will hopefully improve them and our club in future years.

The Under 18’s were undermanned this week and had a few of the Under 16’s step up and contributed brilliantly to a solid win. Dozer down back was brilliant all game along with Aaron Ramsey in the ruck and Josh Cornolo clunking a few up forward it was a great team effort. The B Grade have had some great tussles this season with East and finally our boys produced what they are capable of and took the

Blue & Red win. Coached well by Nathan Lewis with Couchie his eyes and ears on the bench. Lewie was great around the ground again for his team along with Speedy Waugh through the midfield, Jimmy Keatley down back and Badsie up forward being major contributors also. Onto this week and we head to ladder leader South’s home ground for what will again be a challenge in every grade. We are hopeful we can start to get a few of our players back from injury and get into a settled routine heading towards September in all grades. On a personal note the West Gambier Football Club would like to pass on our deepest sympathy to Michael Mourbey and his extended family on the passing of Michael’s wife Tanya, all at West are thinking of you during this difficult time.

WITH Island Park will be sprinkled with some AFL greatness this weekend as Casterton Sandford welcomes Geelong premiership trio Max Rooke, Brad Ottens and Matthew Stokes into the A Grade team for this Saturday’s huge Bendigo Bank Western Border Football League battle with Millicent. It will be something of a fairytale for Rooke in particular, who grew up as Casterton Cat many years before he became the cult figure at Kardinia Park. Geelong recruited the utility player straight from Casterton 20 years ago and he went on to play 135 games at the highest level plus playing in three consecutive AFL Grand Finals. Despite reaching the holy grail with the Cats twice in 2007 and 09, Rooke said his junior football club has always remained close to his heart and he wanted to lend a helping hand. “Obviously it is where we I started my career and looks like where I am going to end it as well,” he said. “I played one game for Casterton back in 2013, but I have always loved the town and the people, so after COVID and not being involved in the AFL system anymore, I have a bit more time up my sleeve. “Earlier this year I went back and helped out and when I drove away I felt like I needed to help out even more, so hopefully we can create a bit of excitement back into the town.” Rooke said he still strongly remembers his young years at Casterton which included fronting up in the 2000 Western Border grand final as a 17-year-old. “I played my first Under 14’s game when I was 11

and worked my way through the grades,” he said. “I had some great coaches and I looked up to a lot of those senior players of the time like Justin Munro and Darren Carlin. “I had two years playing senior footy before I finished school and they looked after me as a young player and I loved playing with those guys.” Although Rooke has coached at Geelong, Gold Coast and Melbourne since he hung up the boots in 2010, he managed to entice premiership team mates Stokes and Ottens to come out of retirement and wear blue and white hoops of a different kind. South Australia played a part in Stokes’ journey to the big league when he starred for the WoodvilleWest Torrens SANFL side before being drafted as mature aged player in 2005. His goalkicking prowess and roving skills meant he was formidable force kicking more than 200 majors alongside the likes of Gary Ablett Jr, Jimmy Bartel and Paul Chapman. Just like Rooke, Ottens is a member of Geelong’s hall of fame and was a journeyman of the AFL. Ottens hailed from the Glenelg Football Club and played 129 games for Richmond between 1998 and 2004. But he took his career to new heights as a ruckman and the 1000th player to wear the Cats jumper at Kardinia Park and played a key role in the 2007 flag which ended 58 years of pain. Rooke said he was thrilled to hear the pair were keen to play alongside him again to support the Kane Forbes’ men. “I am pretty lucky to be close with most of my team mates from the Geelong era, but I knew that if it was just me I would not

ROOKE change much,” he said. “Obviously the club is battling a bit at the moment, so I just gave them a phone call and I wasn’t expecting them to say yes, but they both did straight away. “Matthew played two years ago, but Brad and I haven’t played for around six years, so I hope everyone is not expecting us to set the world on fire. “We are not going to be the AFL players we were that is for sure, but it is not about that for us, it is about doing what we can to help the club and country footy. “The Western Border is not the same league as I what I remember growing up. “I was probably one of the last to be drafted straight from the league without going through the TAC or SANFL, so I want the league to be as strong as it can be and hopefully young kids still have that opportunity. “But more than anything we are there to help the players, share our knowledge and give them a bit of extra motivation for the rest of the season and beyond.” The injection of 580 games of AFL experience will give any country football team a boost, but no club needs it more than Casterton Sandford. The new-look side has suffered a horror 2021, losing every game whilst being ravaged by injuries. However, Rooke’s support behind the club has only grown as the pain grew with the former AFL star presenting jumpers to juniors, working behind the scenes and even running a clinic focused on mental health. “Dylan (Ayton) contacted me earlier in the year and since I have left the AFL system, I have put a lot of time into learning about mental health because I have gone through a few things myself,” he said. “One of the similarities I see is just how much the club means to the town at Geelong and Casterton. “So it got to the point I wanted to start helping other people in anyway I could, so did a five-hour workshop with the team about things I have learnt to open up their eyes to a few things. “It was really positive and I have a had a fair few chats with Kane about the little things I have seen at training and games because I am keen to give back to the town that gave me so much. “I looked up to the senior players of the time at Casterton and they helped me a lot, so I want to return the favour and pass it on to the next generation.”

MATCH REPORTS NORTH GAMBEIR V CASTERTON SANDFORD The Cats welcomed back a former star at the weekend but it was not enough to get them over the line against an ever improving North Gambier that is building nicely towards the business end of the season. Tayla Guthrie was on hand to shore up the Casterton Sandford defence line but she did have arguably one of the toughest jobs in the Western Border A Grade compe on – denying Caroline Davey easy ball and a plethora of scoring opportuni es. And unfortunately for the Cats, Davey was a key factor with a best on court performance that saw her net 45 from 53 as the Tigers took control of the contest early and just built on their dominance to secure a 38 goal victory. Despite the disrup on of two blood rule infringements that saw Lauran Norman take tot the court twice for North Gambier – once in the mid court and one in her more familiar role of goal a ack – the Tigers were unfazed with a consistent four quarter performance. Noni McConnell was also influen al for the Tigers as her ght checking, willingness to contest and ability to read the play and hunt the intercept, ensured there was plenty of turnover ball for North with Mel Renko and Brianna Walters connec ng those defensive efforts with the shoo ng circle with Ellen Brown and Davey and the conversion rate ensured the scoreboard was always in the Tigers’ favour. It was the experienced players for the Cats that led the way with coach Tori Broomby again being her side’s best alongside 300 gamer Scarle Jarrad. Broomby con nues to be the general of the Casterton Sandford a ack line, while Jarrad is simply inspira onal with her work rate – her hard running both defensively and offensively to give her side the best chance of being compe ve has been exactly what has made her the respected player at her own club and in the compe on. Despite the comfortable margin, the Cats would be pleased to have only conceded 62 goals to the powerhouse Tigers who have regularly scored around that mark against more fancied and experienced opposi on. MILLICENT V SOUTH GAMBIER The clash at McLaughlin Park between Millicent and South Gambier started in a similar fashion to their round two clash with the Demons matching the reigning premiers and at quarter me the Saints held a slender three goal lead.

A perfect shoo ng performance from Lara Munro and the strong holding of shooter Grace Edwards, combined with some important defensive touches from Brandi Bouchier and Ellie Bouchier saw most of the quarter a goal for goal contest and were it not for some turnover ball created by young Saints keeper Por a McRae, the Demons might have been even closer. Tabatha Sanderson was always going to be the biggest headache for the Demons And so it proved with the returning shooter ne ng 16 from 19 in the opening quarter, followed by 19 straight in the second as the Saints started to take control. By half me the margin was 13 as the speed of ball from Lucy Denton, Demi Verbena and Paige Nitschke started to become difficult for the Demons defence line to control, while the defensive effort from the Saints also stepped up as they looked to shut down the Demons well before the ball reached the accurate Munro and strong holding Edwards. The third quarter put the result beyond doubt as the ght checking pressure from Denton and Lisa Duldig started to see a high error rate from the Demons and with Sanderson and Nitschke finishing strongly from their high number of opportuni es, the three quarter me margin was 21 with the Saints looking to con nue to pressure South into mistakes and capitalise at the other end. Sophie Ellis entered the clash at goal defence in the second half and she certainly made life tougher for Munro, while South also made changes in the last, moving Renee Pluckhahn from centre to her more familiar role of goal defence, with Hannah Witherow taking the centre bib and Ellie Bouchier moving from goal defence, where she had garnered some cri cal turnover ball, to the defensive wing. But in the end, the Saints were just too good. The classy delivery from Denton, Verbena and Nitschke ensured Sanderson was an almost unstoppable scoring machine, scoring 70 of Millicent’s goals, while at the other end, despite missing Hannah Nitschke, who was sidelined through illness, the defensive end not only had great contribu ons from Duldig, McRae and Kimmi Tincknell but found a great back up in Ellis, as the reigning premiers con nue to finetune ahead of the 2021 finals series. EAST GAMBIER V WEST GAMBIER The Bulldogs remain undefeated but the injury count is star ng to add to the challenge of a season

DENTON’S

that has East Gambier a s t h e c l e a r premiership favourite. Already missing Tyne Bosko, s ll recovering from a f r i e n d l y fi re i n c i d e nt at t h e SA C o u nt r y Championships on the June Long Weekend, the Bulldogs now face poten ally a month without star mid courter Tarsh McCallum, a er she was forced from the court with an injury that has threatened to do exactly what is had now – sideline her for some much needed recovery me. Despite losing McCallum early, forcing a reshuffle where youngster Kate Dempsey moved from the defensive wing to the a acking wing, and Chloe Perryman again promoted to the A Grade defensive wing, East managed to hold on for am eight goal victory. Dempsey arguably looked even more at home on the a acking wing and that should come as no surprise, given she announced herself as a genuine contender for a permanent senior role in the 2019 finals series, while Perryman brings tenacity and physical presence to the defensive end in the absence of Bosko. The opening quarter was an even affair ending with a ed scoreline of 14 apiece. It was second quarter where the damage was done, where turnover ball from Bo Creek, who celebrated her 250th appearance for East at the weekend, and a strong shoo ng performance from Tenille Gray and Amryn Bosko – the duo conver ng 16 from 20 to set up a six goal half me lead. The second half was an arm wrestle but the Roos needed to be able to overcome the deficit and just couldn’t make the inroads required. Jade Ri er certainly got some important touches at the defensive end and with sister Sarah con nuing to be a strong focal point at the other end of the court, West had their chances but just not enough. Sarah Ri er started the match with 11 straight goals and then con nued to be cri cal, with her third quarter also outstanding, ne ng 11 from 13 but in the end, Creek did enough to curb the scoring, not just one on one with Ri er but also hun ng the intercep on throughout the goal third. The Roos con nue to challenge the top sides and seem to build each week. Of course, judging the weekend’s performance given the key personnel missing is problema c but the ba le amongst the top four sides con nues to produce high quality, intriguing games and points to a stunning finals series.

ROUND 12 PREVIEWS SOUTH GAMBIER V WEST GAMBIER The first me South and West met, it was a ght contest with only 10 goals separa ng the two sides. The round two clash was nothing short of disastrous for the Demons and their worst performance for the season by some distance. It means this weekend's clash is somewhat of an unknown but given West has just pushed top ranked East to the limit, the Demons will be facing a confident Roos ou it and will need to start well and out in a four quarter performance to avoid another lopsided scoreboard. South defenders Brandi Bouchier and Ellie Bouchier had to try and deny tall Millicent shooter Tabatha Sanderson easy ball last weekend and now they take on rising star Sarah Ri er – another tall shooter and one who also doesn't mind the long range shots. It is the case of another weekend, another huge c h a l l e n g e a n d t h e m o t h e r- d a u g h t e r combina on will again be hoping the mid court of Renee Pluckhahn and Hannah Witherow make life tough for the feeders because if Carlee Ransom and Tara Bryant and given easy access to the circle, the scoreboard will be extremely difficult to control. At the other end, South has a tall shooter of its own in Grace Edwards and her strength on the hold and ability to pull in the difficult ball improves every week, so West defenders Jade Ri er and Amy Cram will need to be at their best and they can also not ignore Lara Munro who has been a revela on in her debut season with her long range accuracy and willingness to a ack the post. One of the key ba les will be West wing defender Nikiesha Facey taking on Demon wing a acks Alyssa Duncan and Imogen Walker. Duncan is a smart player who plays in goals and knows just where to place the ball, while Walker is strong in the air and hits the circle hard. West clearly starts favourite with Sarah Ri er in outstanding shoo ng form and coach Lisa McGregor working so well with her young shoo ng partner and with Cram and Jade Ri er coming off a strong performance against the star East shoo ng combina on, the Roos should con nue to build towards finals with a strong victory.

Millicent had a tough opening quarter against South Gambier at the weekend but as they match wore on, so did the Saints dominance and that looms large for the Cats as they host the reigning premiers. Paige Murrell, Tori Broomby and new addi on Zhane Crawford have started to form a hard working offensive set up but with Por a McRae, Hannah Nitschke, Kimmi Tinknell and Lisa Duldig patrolling the defensive third, finding easy ball in range will be a challenge. Even when you add in 300 gamer Scarle Jarrad, who is a hard running mod courter, the Cats will s ll have a tough day to find avenues to goal. The other end of the court was also impressive, as the speed of ball from Demi Verbena and Paige Nitschke made life tough for the South defenders and will also test the Cats defensive line. They con nued to find Tabatha Sanderson in space and she is clearly fully recovered from her finger injury that kept her off court for weeks un l round 10. The accurate delivery and her strong hold and strong hands will mean the likes of Ebany Jarrad, Claire Foster and Caeleigh Humphries will have to try and cut the ball off before it gets as far as Sanderson if they are hoping to keep the scoreboard under control. Lucy Denton is about to head off for na onals as part of the SA 17 Under team so would be an unlikely starter this weekend but the Saints' depth will be able to cover that absence, despite the fact the young midcourter has been in great form and was agian influen al in Millicent's convincing round 11 win over South. NORTH GAMBIER V EAST GAMBIER If ever there was a me to end East Gambier's undefeated run in 2021, this is the weekend so North Gambier is in prime posi on to be the first. With Tyne Bosko and Tarsh McCallum sidelined, the Bulldogs will field a makeshi mid court. Kate Dempsey is certainly up to the challenge and will probably take the wing a ack bib, while the wing defence posi on might be as li le more problema c as A Reserve player Chloe Perryman has filled that role, but it is ge ng to the point of the season where players cannot con nue to fill in the higher grade.

Of course playing coach Emily Hunter patrols the mid court and she is as dynamic as they come, working hard defensively and driving hard to the circle's edge in a ack. Her ba le with Mel Renko looms as one of the key ba les of the contest, with Renko arguably one of the most consistent performers in the compe on and always at a high level. Both sides defensive plans revolve around two dominant shooters – East Gambier looking to deny tall Tigers hooter Caroline Davey too much ball and North's defensive set up looking to make life tough for athle c goal a ack Tenille Gray. The quality shooters are certainly the key targets for their respec ve sides but both sides would be all too aware that their shoo ng partners cannot be le unchecked. East's Amryn Bosko has been sharing the shoo ng load with Gray and her ming on the lead and ability to hold strongly has her ranked equally as dangerous if le with too much space. North's Ellen Brown has pace to burn and not only does she deliver the ball with precision to Davey but she also is not afraid of the long shot. To deny easy ball to Davey and Gray will take a full team effort. Bo Creek, who celebrated her 250th game last weekend, has had some wonderful ba les with Davey and her aerial strength will certainly be a factor, while the ability of Lisa Fyfe to take the spectacular intercep on and the pressure from Hunter will hopefully be enough to assist Creek in keeping Davey quiet. At the other end, Maddie Whaites and Noni McConnell are building a strong combina on, with McConnell coming off her best game at goal defence for the season, and they will need to work together and rely on pressure from Renko, Tenielle Barry and Lauren Buddle outside the circle to force errors from the East feeders. This looms as a goal for goal contest with East just sneaking over the line despite the challenges.

In the second quarter we had Amy Feast go down with a severe ankle injury. Changes and the shock made the girls concerned. But continued to be strong and push through the win the game by 6.

A perfect team game by all the girls, their driving down court, passing, pressure over the ball and backing each other up was the best we have seen all season. The defensive pressure from Katie, Skye and Lily F, resulted in turned over ball and timely intercepts, Indee and Lily Mc made a lot of space and drove well onto the circle feeding our goalies with pin point passing, and Ellie and Sharni played beautifully in the circle with strong driving, rebounding and passing into the space. Overall a fantastic team effort which deserved the win. Thank you to Jolie for sitting bench for us. 13B’s - East 4 lost to West 33 Best Players - Skye Wilson & Indee Stratford Award Winners - (Athletes Foot) Mia Little (Boost Juice) Jolie O’Dea (Scroll Queen) Chloe Little

The second quarter, North this weekend scoring 22-20. Well started to find their feet a bit more done girls! and our girls really had to turn it up a notch to hold their lead. There were some great passages of play with the ball flowing well. The defenders had fought hard all day with their intercepts and rebounds, the mid courters backed the defenders up really well picking up loose balls, feeding and intercepts at centre passes. The goalers had 2 different combinations and all three of them shot with accuracy and worked the ring well together Overall, the girls tried their hardest and all know the areas they need to improve on to get a good solid four quarters together. A good solid training again this week, regroup and bring on next week. Cat Of The Week goes to Charlotte Rice. Charlotte umpired, coached and managed to play out 2 games even though she hit the deck in the U17's grazing all up the side of her leg. It certainly was a chilly morning on Saturday when we headed to McDonald Park to take on East Gambier. The day started well with some great wins in the 11’s with Isobel and Ruby taking out the best players. 13B’s had a very convincing win, with Lara and Analeigh in the bests. In our 15 sides the 15A’s came away with the win 23 – 41 with Lucy and Leila leading the way and the 15B’s having a narrow loss, Macy and Imogen judge best for the game.
