East Gambier v Millicent
North Gambier v West Gambier
No ma er the result between East Gambier and Millicent at McDonald Park today, the spotlight will shine on one man, Shem Balshaw.
Fresh from tas ng victory for the first me since September 2019, West Gambier fancies revenge on North Gambier in a rematch of the previous WBFL grand final.
The veteran Bulldog will play his 200th game for his beloved club and his team mates will do everything they can to salute him with a victory.
The Roos ended their 602-day wait by k i l l i n g C a ste r to n S a n d fo rd w i t h a barnstorming second half and the Tigers be er brace themselves for another fast finish.
The two sides could not further apart on the ladder with the Cats yet to challenge for premiership points, while the Demons have been unbeatable.
West has won each last quarter in 2021 and can bombard the scoreboard in quick bursts which was on full show last week with 94 points a er half me.
The Victorians are in the middle of a rebuilding phase and new A Grade coach Kane Forbes has endured a rough start to 2021.
Tom Holmes con nues to run riot in the middle and Todd McPartlan has added another gear from half back, while Garret Ha and Josh Schapel are in fine goalkicking form.
Last week against West Gambier he would been op mis c at half me, but a drama c drop in inefficiency allowed the opponents to run away to a 94-point win.
However, the sight of yellow jumpers will bring back a lot of memories from the 2019 decider where Sam Stafford kicked the Roos out of conten on.
Despite the lack of success, the Cats can take heart from their only home game of the year when they made sure Millicent earnt the win and returned home with a few bruises.
H o w e v e r, t h e S a i n t s c a n n o t b e underes mated having taken giant strides over recent weeks. Clint Gallio's men backed up a breakthrough triumph over Casterton Sandford with an away win over West Gambier, but could not make it a hat-trick against North Gambier. However, the Saints pushed the reigning premier all the way un l the final siren and were led by the ageless Steve Duldig. The likes of Nick Lock and James Bryne will have their work cut out trying to slow fearsome forward Gene Robinson, who will be keen to return to his best a er falling below par his lo y standards. But last week Millicent displayed its variety of op ons in front of goal including young guns Sam Willis and Jaxon Cushion.
On grand final day Stafford booted six goals and he has warmed up for the rematch with mul ple majors each round including two bags of seven. One of them helped the Tigers return to winning ways under lights in Millicent.
The Saints will eye a poten al opportunity to keep East on the back foot a er the side suffered its first defeat of the season to a rampant South Gambier.
It was an important moment in North's 2021 season having lost the previous two encounters as the squad gets to know each other on the field.
The Bulldogs were cut apart by the Demons' work rate and could miss playing coach Ma Willson a er he went down with a knee injury last week.
The Tigers could be boosted by the return of ruckman Luke Powell, who has plenty of kms in the legs a er comple ng a marathon as veteran Sco Fle and junior Henry Gould took over the du es.
The likely absence of the silky le footer for a couple of games will leave a huge hole in the midfield and place more pressure on the shoulders of co-coach Jayden Eldridge. Despite the pain of round 4, East aims to give Balshaw the perfect celebra on and put its premiership push back on track, but Millicent could make things tricky.
With the winner being awarded a top-four place on the ladder, there is more than just bragging rights on the line these rivals clash for the first me since that last Saturday in September two years ago. Casterton Sandford v South Gambier Casterton Sandford enjoys a home game
Casterton Sandford also won its previous encounter with the Demons in 2019, which was also a sudden-death ba le in the final round of the season. However, today will be a different story as South builds the perfect premiership case. Brayden Kain's side has cked off every single Western Border side except for the Cats with rela ve ease and many expect the pa ern to con nue. The only concern for the Demons is the injury list with Brodie Foster, Jack Casey and Bronson Saffin all in doubt. But one of South's greatest strengths is depth and the club should keep its perfect record intact.

GARRETTHA
North Gambier Yellow & Black Congratula ons to Millicent for organising last week, especially the weather, and agreeing to playing most games with 16 a side, which helped us out more than them. By the me the A grade started the shed was certainly rocking, perhaps as some forgot to pace themselves for the later start/finish. The A grade was a cracking game, with both teams fielding numerous underage players. A highlight of our year so far has been watching how well Jus n has coached a team with much less experience than he has had in previous years. We were a bit unsure what to expect a er our previous game, but the boys bounced back well. A few were given tough jobs and keys to our game was Jake Schutz blanke ng the 10 goal forward from the previous week and Sam Stafford snagging 7. With contribu ons from all, other best players were the ever reliable Nick McInerney and Brad Stafford, Nick Brown (who is having a break out year) and Declan Kenny. Also of note was the vintage cameo performance of Sco Fle , whose wife no longer understands the word 're rement' and the debut of Jack O'Connor, who was born quite some me a er Sco played his first A grade game. The reserves got back on the board with a win, with a few new and old players making appearances for the first me this year. A er a fair bit of work in the last few weeks, we are hopeful numbers will keep improving. Best players were Toby De Wit (who is knocking on the door for his A grade debut), Tim Young, Karl Spedding (welcome to the club), Toby Firth, Laurie Persello and Tim Scarth. Unfortunately, the return to football of Adam Creek was short lived, with a stretcher and ambulance required, as it was for Jaky Norman in the u16s. There was no malice in either incident and we wish both a quick recovery, in line with the new concussion protocols which we didn't want to have to worry about so quickly.
V
With 6 u18s in the A Grade the boys were a bit under-manned, but may well have assisted the A grade in wearing out some of the Millicent boys who also doubled up. Best players were Jacob Arthurson, Elijah Firth, Jamie Williamson, Alex Stafford, Brody Allison and Brody Allen. The u16s had a tough day against a strong team. Best players were Jayk Norman, Zayne Young, Darcy Arthurson, Hector Opie and Angus Allen. If the boys keep working hard, their next win won't be too far away. The u14s have had a great start to the year and this con nued on Saturday. Do yourselves a favour and get to the footy early to watch their brand of footy. Best players were Cooper Turner, Zac Cordell, Ben Braithwaite, Iowani Coleman, Aaron Dally and Kade Allen. The u12As had a come from behind win and all of the u12s appear to have had a good day. It was good to see so much yellow and black around the Millicent ovals and courts. This week we are hos ng West, with the Tom Hall trophy (currently held by West) up for grabs. Get around all our teams for what promises to be compe ve games all day.
West Gambier Blue & Red
Started the Day a bit later then usual in a game against a very determined Under 14s side. Casterton had a determined bunch of kids that where to good in the end of the day, Casterton got over the line in a close game. Our boys showed great sponsorship and rallied around each and bounced back to hit the lead in the last quarter. Bailey Noble con nued his good form this year with best on ground supported by Seth Fraser kicking 2 goals, Koby Stratman, Tate Hammond Harvey Croker.
Under 16s started of with a solid first quarter then strung together 4 very good quarters of football for the day. With some excellent passages of play with overlap running and ball movement and hard running. Best players Finn Kenseley, Billy Weise, Harrison Opperman, Ethan Perryman / cary, Joel Day and Jarred Edwards. Reserves Kicked of well with a good team performance and played some good football. Lewie and Dale played their 100th game for the day and played in a big win. Riley Wilson Kicked 8 goals in a great performance reminding Wenmo of how good he is. The fossil of the team Foxy put his hand up for selec on again a er not
talking to his brother-in-law all week a er being dropped from the seniors, with Best player followed by Riley Willson, Joshua Kranz, Kiwi and Dale Robbins. The seniors kicked on a er a hard week on the track to get on the board. Its great to get reward for effort as its been a tough start to the Year with the Coach being told he is out for the year. The boys rallied around and followed the direc ons well. Great to see some players ge ng confidence and believing in themselves and delivering on the day. G HA fist half was outstanding reminding us all the bag of tricks he has. Waldo hi ng the scoreboard but working hard and con nuing to present and give us a target forward. Todd Mcpartlan was solid in defence rebounding ball a er ball to win best on ground followed by the ever green Tom Holmes, Josh Schapel, Garre Ha and skipper Lawry Bradley Brown. This week we head to Vansi art Park to con nue our good form to through all grades and start building our season. We are heading to the Commersh a er the game for tea so come along and support our great sponsors. Fridge
Our first official social func on next week, The Championships North Tennis Open is on tonight so we look forward to seeing the talent and fashions on show. Club memberships are now due. We have kept the amount at $40 and for that you get a stubby holder and s cker, so no excuses and let's see if we can break last years membership record. Payment can be made at club, via Team App or by simply seeing Andrew or Mardi Whan. Thanks to our major sponsors, Stuckey Electrical Contractors and KFC. Go Tigers.

Hello readers and just say. We our boys down back make it real won't talk about last weeks one hard for him. sided result. Well done South. Too good. Shem shemmy shemwar the goat. What ever you feel like calling him. The under 14's had a very big win Shem will play his 200 A grade and the under 16's held their own game for the club. Well done great effort. a er a slow start. Dunny’s boys in the under 18's Stay back around at the club, as we were on fire at the start and I can need to finish off this 3 home game s nt at the kennel. Dinners see a win just around the corner. will be on plus a few might be Well done to Jayden and Kelly for h a n g i n g a r o u n d f r o m t h e raising some much needed funds president club lunch. Yep one of those days. for the local cancer group. This week we take on the Millicent saints. Go a to love the Millicent lads. Tunks, Joel even wormy. They are always thinking that we are just up to no good. Boys just relax. Trust us. As we sort of trust you.

Happy Mother’s Day, to all the Mothers out there. Mother figures, Mums to be, Mothers in heaven and all the Mothers that look a er their partners. On that, women are a unique and wonderful breed. There are so many differences between women and men. For example... A man will pay $2 for a $1 item he needs where as a woman will pay $1 for a $2 item she doesn't need, but it's on sale? When ea ng out and the bill arrives Damian, Ben and David will throw in $20 each even though it's only for $32.50. None of them will have anything smaller and none will actually admit they want change back. Except Bronte, he's the excep on to the rule. When the girls get their bill, out comes the pocket calculators... Men wake up as good looking as they went to bed, Women somehow deteriorate during the night. Women when they start packing a suitcase begin packing a month in advance, writes hundreds of lists, packs the kids’ suitcases too. Schedules all the ac vi es, wakes up at night fearing they've forgo en something, suddenly remembers things she's forgo en and then tries to pack everything that clearly exceeds suitcase capacity. Needing a partner, 2 kids and a dog standing on it to get it closed. A man starts packing his shorts, a tee shirt 5 minutes before leaving. Right, that's me done. And how frustra ng is it wai ng for women to get ready for an event!!! In that "I'll be ready in 5 minutes" I reckon I could fly to the moon and write a poem, but when they are finally ready you've been wai ng pa ently for hours and you haven't got your shoes on yet. You are the reason for arriving late.
I do admit women could be the smarter gender though. I asked my partner if I was the only one she's been with. She happily said yes, the others were 9 and 10's. Mum said men are like beer bo les, Empty from the neck up. All jokes aside I wish every mother a great and wonderful Mother’s Day. A big crowd for the night game against North, unfortunately going down by 21 points in a ght contest. Congratula ons to Eli Redman on his A grade debut, doing some nice things and held his own. Trying to follow in his brothers footsteps. Let's hope if he does, he gets dra ed to a decent club. Best players for Millicent, the veteran Steve Duldig ge ng best on. And at the other end of the age bracket Kade Varcoe 2nd best with a stand out game, Cargs ba led hard with Cream Willis kicking 3 goals

An undermanned reserves side ba led against a undermanned North side and lost by 17 points. Be er players on the day were Nat, Harry, Macka, Colby, Jack Oppelaar and Starty. Under 18s recorded a solid win with some great team footy played by all. Pete D is doing a great job of managing to get the best from his players while
Millicent Red, Black & White also trying to keep a lot of them fresh for second games each week and thanks to those lads. Dunny slo ed 3 in a BOG performance and is catching the eye, Nick Joy another who is working into form, others to feature Kalan, Jed, Ma Varcs and Blake. Kalan Shanks put in a dominant game in the 16s, tore it up and used teammates well to give the boys a big win. Toddy was back to his early season form with 6 goals and others to feature were Jack Hagge , Blake W, Kobe Gibson backing up from 14s and Tallan Dunn. 14s just missed out a er a great game with Thwaitsey taking some great marks and is a big improver, deserving BOG. Kobe Gibson played a belter also and was backed up by Je , William Wilson, Liam Cawood and Adam Smith. Huge Congratula ons from us all at Millicent Football Netball Club this week to Steve Duldig on 350 Games. An awesome achievement by Digger and he has given his heart and soul to the Millicent FNC over the journey in many ways. One of the best blokes in the game, and also one the fairest, best and most respected players not just here but in Country footy in SA. 200 GAME MILESTONE FOR SHEM BALSHAW Today's round of the 2021 Bendigo Bank Western Border Football League season will not be forgo en any me soon by East Gambier veteran Shem Balshaw. When Balshaw runs out with his team mates at McDonald Park to face Millicent, it will be the 200th me he wears the Bulldogs' jumper. The classy half-forward has been a loyal Bulldog inside the Kennel since his debut against North Gambier in 2004. In the years since he has become a leader at East and captained the club to its breakthrough 2017 flag. However, having been forced to wait to reach the double ton due to a COVID shortened 2020, Balshaw said the milestone had been a source of mo va on recently. “It will be good and has probably kept me going for the last few years to get there,” he said. “During the year before COVID, it (200) was star ng be thrown around that I was ge ng close, so it has been on my mind for a while and could be one of the last things I do as a football player.” Despite the ques ons over how long Balshaw will add to his growing record of games, his form and class have never disappeared. He con nues to lead the charge from the half forward line and his two-goal performance in a ght win over North Gambier this year was par cularly impressive. A er not taking part in the Limestone Coast Super League last year, Balshaw said he has loved the game on and off the field in 2021 and is encouraged by his team's 3-1 start. “I have really enjoyed the year so far,” he said. “The year off has probably done a world of wonders, so I am feeling pre y fit and healthy. “Ge ng out there with the boys and having a schnitzel on Thursday night has been great. “I think if we can keep the injuries under control we are looking pre y good to be around the mark.”
As a fresh young teenager, Balshaw enjoyed a dream debut against the Bulldogs' archrival the Tigers. He said it will be tough to forget his maiden taste of A Grade footy a er making an impression with his very first touch. “I was in Under 18's and we played North Gambier in a pre y fiery game and my first kick was actually a goal from the forward pocket,” Balshaw said. “There were some big boys on both sides and I think we won by less than a goal, so I remember it very well. “I played a couple more games that year before taking part in the B Grade finals series a er ge ng a bit injured.” Following his first foray into the WBFL, Balshaw moved to Adelaide for study and won a flag for Walkerville. But a er just four years away, he returned to Mount Gambier and has remained in the Kennel ever since. Balshaw's name will forever be remembered at McDonald Park having led the club out of a lean period and towards a drought-breaking premiership in 2017. He said he was ini ally a reluctant to take the posi on, but was especially proud to be the first East captain to li the trophy since Peter Dempsey. “I probably fell into the role just because we were such a young team, so I may not have been a natural choice as a captain,” Balshaw said. “But I grew into it over the years and hopefully wasn't too bad. “The 2017 flag was definitely the highlight to achieve the big goal were chasing during those years when we did struggle.” Having spent his en re Western Border career at the Kennel, Balshaw has created many happy memories and cannot wait to play his 200th at the same venue. “The biggest thing is how close the club is,” he said. “Most of my best mates are all from the club and there have been a lot influen al people. “I am sure there will be a few nerves because I have never been able to shake them off over the years, but it should be a great day.”

FOOTY JENS HOTEL
WITH Since the turn of the century, West Gambier midfielder Tom Holmes has been a mainstay on football grounds from Malseed Park to AAMI Stadium. The 32-year-old has seen it all from winning Western Border flags to playing against the state’s best in the SANFL, but s ll enjoys lacing up the boots and leading the Roos into ba le. “I got bored during the winter last year, so I was keen to get back into it and play,” he said. “A er the year off and I thought it would take around a month to get back into playing, but over the last few weeks I have got a bit of the footy and used it well. “It is very even this year and hopefully we can put up some solid performances in the second half of the season.” Holmes has “become part of the furniture at Malseed Park” having started his career at the same venue in the late 90’s. The ball magnet said his passion for the game started on a paddock on the other side of the Victorian border, which intensified a er a friend introduced him to West. “I lived on a family farm at Mumbannar and had a lot of me to myself, so I just remember watching the AFL on TV and kicking the footy against the shed,” Holmes said. “Dad said I should have been helping him on the paddock, but I was more interested in kicking the footy around. “I went to primary school with a mate called Luke Davey, captain of the premiership sides, who got me out to West Gambier and I just felt at home making lots of friends.” Holmes was a big Shane Crawford fan, but it was not long un l he found himself packing his bags to Adelaide and adjus ng to life at boarding school in Prince Alfred College.
The youngster enjoyed the challenge of compe ng in the city against the likes of Hamish Hartle . However, bigger things awaited the Limestone Coast kid and Holmes became intrenched in the Glenelg junior teams and trained almost every day. All of the blood, sweat and tears on the training track paid off for Holmes, when he was rewarded with a SANFL league debut as a teenager. The then 18-year-old ran out for the Bay for the first me in round 23 2007 against none other than Bernie Vince’s Woodville. Amazingly the game ended in a draw and Holmes kept his place for the elimina on final against Sturt the following week which was another cracker with the Tigers victorious by nine points. The Roo recalls sharing the experience with another Western Border star. “To make my league debut and manage to stay for finals was a massive thrill,” Holmes said. “I played on the wing and Jus n McConnell was in the forward line wearing his long sleeves and he kicked seven goals and I put just about every single one on his chest. “ The commentators said Holmes and McConnell had a bit of chemistry, so we have a bit of a laugh about that now.” Glenelg went down to Woodville in the second week of finals, but Holmes and his team mates went one be er and reached the decider in 2008. Although the Bay could not overcome a mighty Central Districts at AAMI Stadium, Holmes will never forget the special occasion. “I started on the bench, but when I went out there, the pressure was through the roof like nothing I had ever experienced,” he said. “A few mes you just got hammered straight a er ge ng the footy and the game was over before you knew it.” But it was not all bad news for Holmes, who came within reach of the AFL dream when he was invited to a Port Adelaide training camp at Alberton run by premiership coach Mark Williams. Sadly Holmes said “no one really talked to me” during the week-long affair and a knee injury curtailed his 2009 campaign. Home sickness forced him back home later that year, but the leg issues delayed a Roos’ reunion in 2010. Holmes was forced to wait a couple of rounds
HOLMES before making an unexpected A Grade WBFL debut against Hamilton Imperials a er smashing down a couple of steak sandwiches and borrowing some boots. He said the transi on from the SANFL to WBFL was not an easy one. “It was definitely different,” Holmes said. “The football was s ll strong and I found it challenging each week trying to stay in the side because we had a strong group and they were tough games.” Holmes se led into West’s centre square for the remainder of the season and helped the club to a maiden WBFL premiership in 39 years. He said he will never forget the emo ons a er holding off a fast-finishing Millicent by three points. “It was one of the best days of my life and my greatest football memory,” Holmes said. “A er being at West my whole life, I didn’t realise how many people it impacted and the emo onal experience was awesome.” A er enjoying the high of back-to-back flags and a “career-best” season in 2011, Holmes returned to Glenelg again. Despite pushing the boundaries on the playing and training field and finishing third in the best and fairest count, he admi ed he just “lost the fire” and resumed life in the Blue Lake City once again. Since returning, Holmes has endured three grand final defeats to North Gambier in his third and fourth s nts at the Roos which were separated by a two-year change of scenery at Tantanoola. With hundreds of games under his belt, the running machine conceded it is hard to see giving up the game. “I can’t talk too far ahead, but I am s ll plugging away,” Holmes said. “I definitely enjoy it and get itchy feet when the footy is on TV, so it will be hard to give up.” Holmes has supported Hawthorn all of his life and wished he could have witnessed the infamous 1989 grand final, while he enjoys former teammate Tim O’Brien represent the club now and likes listening to the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

MATCH REPORTS MILLICENT V NORTH GAMBIER Not even a perfect shoo ng performance from Caroline Davey could earn North Gambier the premiership points as the new look Saints ground out a two goal victory over a valiant Tigers.
EAST GAMBIER V SOUTH GAMBIER East Gambier is making a habit of fast starts and the weekend was no excep on as the Bulldogs created a wave of turnover ball, giving goalers Amryn Bosko and Tenille Gray plenty of opportuni es to score.
It was neck and neck for the en re four quarters and even when Millicent worked their way to a six goal advantage in the final term, the Tigers were not done with, working their way back before the reigning premiers secured the crucial two goal advantage as the final whistle sounded.
Lisa Fyfe, Bo Creek and Tyne Bosko completely shut the young Demons forward line down, denying me and space, as they con nually disrupted their forays forward and the transi on was fast and flawless as Emily Hunter drove the middle of the court, connec ng with Kate Dempsey, who was taking the role of the absent Tarsh McCallum, and then leaving the finishing to Amryn Bosko and Gray.
North was missing key u lity Noni McConnell, who is s ll looking to shake off a calf injury, while Millicent had no Kimmi Tincknell, the mul -premiership defender, who was ill and unable to take the court. Tincknell’s absence meant rising star Por a McRae earned her first full game at the top level and while Davey produced a shoo ng performance with no issues, McRae did create turnover ball at cri cal mes, including a pivotal rebound late in the contest.
The first quarter suggested a complete demoli on was on the cards and the 73-31 scoreline was dominant but the Demons did have some shining lights and a er the polished, unrivalled performance in the first quarter, the Bulldogs did end up in a scrappy affair, completely in control but not afforded the same flow of the first quarter.
North Gambier went into the final quarter one goal ahead and ironically, given Davey’s 100 percent shoo ng for the match, it was the Saints who recorded no misses as they secured the two goal win.
Fyfe, Creek and Tyne Bosko con nued to make the Demons earn every goal but Grace Edwards had her strongest game under the post against the premier defensive combina on in the compe on and youngster Lara Munro was not in midated by her highly creden alled opponents and con nued to present.
Lisa Duldig ran hard all day, pu ng in a strong defensive performance at wing defence before moving to centre and leading her team home, while Tabatha Sanderson, who nailed 13 straight in the tense final quarter, con nued to present and cause headaches for the North defenders.
Gray was her usual dominant self, controlling the a ack line, taking plenty of strong contested balls and finishing accurately, while Amryn Bosko proved to be the perfect foil, playing with composure and presen ng just when required with both goalers finishing accurately.
Davey ne ed 44 of North’s 59 goals and was a standout for the Tigers, while Brianna Walters backed up her ANZAC Day performance, when she took home the Shirley Underwood Medal, with another hard running effort that saw her impact at both ends of the court.
New Demons defender Renee Pluckhahn certainly had her moments despite being matched against the classy Gray, while Alyssa Duncan was the key feeder, making good posi on on the circle’s edge in what was a tough ba le with Tyne Bosko.
Given North is s ll nkering with its line-up, the Tigers would be thrilled with a four quarter performance that saw them match it with the reigning premiers, while for the second successive week, the new look Saints found a way to grind a win.
East Gambier con nues to put the runs on the board and will be anxious to take on the Saints, arguably bearing the burden of favouri sm against the reigning premiers, while South Gambier will be throwing everything at the Cats in both sides’ best chance of a breakthrough
DENTON’S
v i c to r y w i t h n ew look, inexperienced line-ups. WEST GAMBIER V CASTERTON SANDFORD Injuries are not helping Casterton Sandford’s cause as the inexperienced line up looks to con nue to develop and compete against the compe on’s best but the Cats can take heart from recoding their highest score for the 2021 season thus far as its young list con nues to work hard and learn. It was always going to be a tough ask against West Gambier with the experience of Carlee Ransom, Amy Cram and Lisa McGregor and then there’s the height of Sarah Ri er and her unassuming sister Jade at the other end of the court so the task, given West had pushed Millicent to the limit the previous week, was enormous. Natalie Rhook answered Cats coach Tori Broomby’s S.O.S and took the goal keeper bib to cover for Meg Fennell and her leadership in the defensive third was cri cal, as was Broomby’s in the offensive third as she looks to con nue to develop her young line-up. In the end though, it was all about weight of supply and West had a lion’s share of possession with Sarah Ri er conver ng at ever y opportunity, making the most of the hard driving and accurate feeding of Ransom, who was back to her best on the a acking wing. Madison Mutch ran hard all day for the Cats and her connec on with Broomby, who made every post a winner, including conver ng eight from eight in the second quarter, ensured the Cats kept the scoreboard cking over with their limited opportuni es. A er challenging but not defea ng Millicent the previous round, West would be pleased to again put in a polished performance, while the Cats will be turning their a en on to hos ng South Gambier and their best chance yet for victory.
ROUND 5 PREVIEWS EAST GAMBIER V MILLICENT For the first me in arguably a decade, East Gambier will start hot favourite in its clash with reigning premiers Millicent, having brushed aside the other four teams in the compe on. East Gambier has some new faces but it is a star ng seven without a weakness, while the Saints are rebuilding without Donna Denton and Hayley Dunn. The good news for the reigning champs is they have been challenged in the past two rounds but have found a way, while East will have pencilled in this match as a chance to truly message just how good this 2021 combina on could be. No team has got within 30 goals of the Bulldogs in the first four rounds. Lisa Fyfe is playing as well, if not be er, than her best and fairest medal winning season in 2017, and her combina on with Bo Creek already looks solid and there is no be er defender in the compe on against tall shooters. Tyne Bosko con nues to be the unheralded cog in the defensive group at the Bulldogs but her ability to shut down opponents and double as a cri cal offensive link player will loom large in this top of the table contest. Emily Hunter will take on either Lucy Denton or Lisa Duldig and that will be a ba le worthy of the entrance fee alone, while Tarsh McCallum will bring her speed and smarts to the contest and her connec on with Tenille Gray and Amryn Bosko will need to be at its best to limit the opportuni es for the Millicent defenders to create turnover ball. Gray is as good as she has ever been – hard working, strong and accurate on the finish – and her combina on with Amryn Bosko is potent – the duo has been sharing the scoring responsibili es, adding to the challenge for defensive opponents. Millicent’s Kimmi Tincknell and Hannah Nitschke will have to work over me to work the front posi on and not allow any easy ball for the East shoo ng combina on and they will also be relying on Denton and Duldig to pressure the East feeders and not allow the ball to move with speed into the Bulldogs goal circle. At the other end, Tabatha Sanderson will need to be strong in here posi oning and hands as Creek and Fyfe contest every ball, especially those in the air, while Demi Verbena’s smarts will be cri cal as she looks to keep Fyfe occupied and away from the intercept and her long range finishing will be pivotal.
Paige Nitschke is as unassuming as her East opponent Tyne Bosko but she is effec ve and she knows just where her goaling team mates like the ball. Given the challenge West and North have posed to the Saints, the Bulldogs look the winners, but no team should underes mate the reigning champs and East will need to be at their best to secure the highly an cipated victory. CASTERTON SANDFORD V SOUTH GAMBIER This is a ba le of two new look line-ups filled with inexperienced campaigners but both will be desperate to take the points and inject come confidence into their squad. South will be able to u lise some of its university departures this weekend with Imi Walker almost certain to take the court and that alone ps the scales in the favour of the Demons. Her first three rounds were outstanding and she influences the contest no ma er what role she is asked to fill. Grace Edwards’ height also looms as a factor, especially if Meg Fennell is s ll sidelined and Natalie Rhook or Sharna Fidler might earn a call up to tackle the Demons recruit. Cats coach Tori Broomby has not let leading this young side affect her own personal form and her ba le with Brandi Bouchier looms as one of the pivotal contests in the clash, while star Demons recruit Renee Pluckhahn will also be looking to use her ability to read the play and her ght checking to create turnover ball for South and young goaler Charlo e Rice will need to be at her best and use her ability from long range. Scarle Jarrad is arguably the most important Cat on court, with her strong driving, leadership and ability to not only be damaging in a ack but also to do some defensive damage. The match also looms as a clash of two of the rising stars of the compe on, South goaler Lara Munro and Cats defender Caeleigh Humphries. Munro has shown great composure and work rate in her debut A Grade season, while Humphries contests strongly and does not allow her opponent any easy ball. Casterton Sandford mid courter Madison Mutch is coming off her best performance in the top senior grade which will be a huge confidence booster as she takes on the hard running Hannah Witherow. In a way the Cats are unlucky that Walker and some of her university alumni are back in the
region for a social event and it will give South the edge and the Demons should be the team that takes the point in what will be a hard fought contest. NORTH GAMBIER V WEST GAMBIER The Tigers would feel confident a er a strong showing on ANZAC Day and taking Millicent right down to the wire but it is not a fait accompli against the Roos, who con nue to build and develop their young line-up. Every match up is en cing and the cloud surrounding the fitness of Noni McConnell looms large over the contest. Young West shooter Sarah Ri er has been in stellar form and presents a challenge for Tigers defender Maddie Whaites, who is rarely beaten and will make the teenager earn every scoring opportunity. Mel Renko and Lisa McGregor are two of the most respected players in the compe on and both will be looking to take charge of the match up and lead their side to victory. Nikeisha Facey has shown great promise at wing defence and her work over the ball and willingness to contest every ball will place pressure on whoever North hands the wing a ack bib. The ba le of the speedy and hard working Tara Bryant (West) and Brianna Walters (North) will be exci ng and another one of those on court match ups that both sides will be eager to win. Carlee Ransom has been back to her best in 2021 and North is yet to se le on a wing defender, but it be er be someone prepared to deny the classy wing a ack me and space or she will con nue to delivery Sarah Ri er and McGregor plenty of scoring opportuni es. Jade Ri er will face another huge challenge this week as she takes on Caroline Davey, fresh from a perfect shoo ng performance but with Amy Cram out front, looking to make life tough for either Alycia Close or Ellen Brown, Jade Ri er will have plenty of support from the wily defender but the speed of either Close or Brown on the front cut will have to be respected as both can finish accurately. North should be confident from its close encounter with Millicent and take the points in a nailbiter.
