GAME PREVIEW West Gambier v East Gambier There will be a lot to gain at Malseed Park where West and East Gambier will collide in what already shapes up to be a pivotal game in their respective 2022 Western Border Football League seasons. The pressure will be on the Bulldogs who have suffered an underwhelming start to the 2022 season losing all three games. The team has entered a new phase this year and has scrapped hard with little reward. East had a great chance to get off the mark last week against Casterton Sandford, but threw it away by failing to convert on its chances despite creating more scoring shots and new recruit Garret Ha proving his worth. To rub salt into the wounds, co-coach Matt Scanlon hurt his hamstring during the tight contest and may struggle to lead his men onto the field as they take aim at the Roos. West Gambier only got the better of the Bulldogs once last year, but it was at Malseed Park and Daron McElroy’s team hopes history can repat. The Roos have had an up and down start to the year with two disappointing defeats sandwiching a special win over North where some fearless football made the difference. Last week the services of McElroy were missed due to injury and he has his fingers crossed to be fit for this weekend. The combination of the coach tapping to Lawry Bradley-Brown could be hard to stop for the Dogs. West and East played some great battles in 2021 and the first edition of 2022 could be another classic. Millicent v North Gambier After just a four-day break, North Gambier hopes to push another premiership contender to the edge in what shapes up to be an unmissable battle. Millicent hosts the Tigers and will be looking to put on a show with many fans expected to gather at McLaughlin Park for the blockbuster

Millicent Red, Black & White A sunny and windy day at McLaughlin Park welcomed West Gambier. Both clubs had key personnel out of their sides. The Reserves had an arm wrestle for most of the day. Westies opened the last quarter strongly and looked like they would kick a w ay b e fo r e ex p e r i e n c e d stagers like God, Dredgey, Schultzy and Ferg lifted the tempo a level. The younger guys were brought into the game and got the final result within a couple of kicks. The Seniors notched up a good win. Fifty scoring shots between t h e t wo te a m s , b u t s o m e inaccurate kicking in the gusty conditions. Dylan, Fraser and Fish presented well up forward. Cargs led the midfield well with clearances at stoppages. Boxy, Tincks and Truck continued the rebound and repelling across the middle and back half. The field kicking and handball clearly improved on the previous week. Our smaller, younger players like Worm, The Two C(K)als, Eli were finding plenty of space. The young blokes flying in off the interchange provided spark and vigour. A strong win in the U18’s after a two week break. Jaxon Cushion, Nick Joy and Alex Wez each kicked 2 with singles to Tallan Dunn, Austin Fuller, Kobe

Gibson, Jackson Bowden, Elie Redman and Ty Lang. Best players were Kobe, Eli, Ty, Nick, Ka l a n S h a n k s a n d Pa t r i c k Jennings.

The U16’s welcomed back reinforcements after having to forfeit against the Cats and enjoyed a comfortable win. Ko b e G i b s o n a n d J a c ks o n Bowden kicked a handful each and Max Hunt, Beau Douglas and Jackson Dean all kicked 1. Best players were Jackson Bowden, Kobe, Teej Lawlor, Jett Werchon and Dylan Sigston. The U14’s snatched a come from behind win against an inaccurate West. Oakley Nicholls kicked 2 with Cash Kenny and Campbell Hateley each kicking 1. Best players were Beau, Teej Lawlor, Lenny Tunkin, Ryder Lindner, Oakley and Will Jennings. The 12E’s enjoyed getting back on to the park after a two week layoff. The 12C’s had another good hit out and thanks to West for helping out with numbers. The 12As’s game had to be called off early after a Ryder Lindner suffered a nasty broken arm. We wish Ryder all the best in his recovery. Ladies Day/Night this Saturday as we welcome North Gambier for a senior football twilight fixture.

North Gambier

A beautiful weekend for footy at Vansittart Park weatherwise, a difficult weekend for footy on the scoreboard though. Unfortunately, South Gambier took the points in all grades.

The Under 14s kicked off on Saturday and after a slow start worked hard against a strong outfit for 3 quarters of the game. This group will keep improving under the leadership of Jason Baron. Best players on the day were Elma Buckland, Connor Lunnay, Sam Crispino, James Flett and Esaie Kulimushi. In perfect conditions, the Under 16’s had no answers for a slick South unit. This group saw the benchmark and now know what is required to match them. Aaron Dally worked tirelessly all day and w a s n a m e d b e s t p l a y e r, followed by Ben Braithwaite, Deacon Ilsley, Cooper Turner and Gav Lapartha. The change of schedule for Anzac Day allowed our Under 18’s to start the special day off. With 8 under 16’s filling the ranks after playing on Saturday allowed the game to be played with full numbers, might be the only time it happens…. The crowd that was there early saw a tight tussle to half time, then the taller cleaner skilled opponents run away with the victory in the second half. Best Players were Craig Turner, Jamie Williamson, Brodie Anderson, Richie K and Iowani Coleman. Probably the less said about the Reserves game the better for Tim Young and the group. Young’s phone bill would be huge at the moment with all the calls and messages he is making. Fingers crossed some will understand where Tim is coming from and start training a n d p l ay i n g t o t a ke t h e stress/pressure off the small group that he has. Nick Brown was judged best player, under 18 Zach Clark second best,

Yellow & Black

Barry Razz third, Jamie Williamson and Ethan Norman rounded out the best players. The Anzac Day clash lived up to the hype and was ripping game of footy. The game could have been put away at half time but for some inaccurate kicking by our boys. This allowed South to chip away and eventually run out winners in a tight last quarter. Coach Hardy while disappointed with the loss, came away from game knowing the best would be good enough against quality opposition. The game was extra special for Reece McLaughlin and recruit Toby McAllister who played their first senior game for the club. Best player and this bloke has started the season on fire was Sam Stafford, followed Dale Bachman, Jake Schutz, Hamish Telford and Tim McInerney. Toady we are at McLaughlin Park home of the original super snag, again cooperating with Millicent to show case WBFL football with the later start time across all grades with the main game starting at 5.00pm N ex t we e k , we we l co m e Casterton to Vansittart Park for the first time in Season 2022. Welcome to Malseed park for round 4, last week against Millicent we managed to only have one win for the day with the reserves remaining u n b e a t e n f o r t h e y e a r. U nfo r t u n ate l y cov i d a n d school holiday plus a couple of injuries has impacted on the senior team and they were well undermanned against a very Talented Millicent side but to the boys credit they kept fighting for the whole game.

This week we host East Gambier who in turn also have had issues with the dreaded covid and hopefully both sides will put on an enthralling contest. Saturday night will see the club rock to the sound of the juke box shuffle and we hope to see you all there. Stay safe

Casterton-Sandford Blue, White & Red Well it's been a long time coming Cats Fans but it happened last weekend, not a single CastertonSandford footy team lost and we even got a Premiership on the Sunday at Penola in the LCWFL well done to all involved. East Gambier always put on a good show, quality steak, quality schnittas, quality hot dogs, everything done right and how they were able to provide us Cat fans with such good weather I do not know. Love the new look clubrooms, so much more room to move, fridges are cold, seats are comfortable, the welcome was warm. The Ressies are back in town, getting to sing the club song for the first time since 2019, Darren Murrell was so excited that he is contemplating his 8th come back, Whispering Jack is his middle name. Pete Hutchins and Chas Jarrad put on a goal kicking clinic but I think the biggest roar came when Tom Brody kicked his goal in the last quarter to spark the Cats back into action. Joey McArlein and his lads have been working hard and full credit must go to this group, plenty of them have shown they are more than capable of making the step up into the seniors if required. The Seniors were missing a few players but you wouldn't have known it as the group that played looked like they had been doing so for several seasons, great to see Ethan Currie running around again, a hard man to stop he combined well with Ed Pritchard Billy Galpin and the versatile Jack Thompson, will Jack win best

utility this season? He played almost every position on the weekend and looked the goods in them all.

Hamish McCrae was a power house, rucking, tackling, crumbing, goaling, the lad can play, and how's the President going, Dylan Ayton runs on Premium Unleaded for sure, 98 all the way, runs around, purring like a kitten and pounces like a Tiger when the ball comes near, an inspiration to his young cohorts. This weekend we are at Island Park against South Gambier, the Demons are running hot at the moment and we will all have to be on the ball and in full voice to cheer our Cats over the line. After the game it's back to the Clubrooms for presentations and dinner and then a family games night, should be a load of fun by the sounds of things. Carn the Cats! Thank-you to all our valued sponsors including Boonaroo, Nutrien Ag Solutions, Bendigo Bank, and Casterton Secondary College Upcoming Events April 30th Family Games Night May 15th Champagne Breakfast (Sunday) May 28th Family Feud June 18th Miss Casterton

FOOTY JENS HOTEL

WITH A WALK DOWN MEMORY LANE FOOTY: THE EARLY YEARS: SEBFL 1953 NORTH UNBACKABLE PREMIER FAVOURITES Penola given no chance in SEBFL final PENOLA had been South East and Border Football League premiers in 1950 and 1952 and yet in 1953 were given little hope of downing the highly fancied North Gambier in the grand final. To provide an indication of the strength in the Penola club, they had achieved the “double” - that is, won both the A and B grade premierships in 1950 and 52 and now had both sides in the 1953 grand final, yet no-one gave them a chance of winning. Much of that was because of the talent in the North Gambier line up. Since football began after the Second World War in 1946 as the South East and Border Football League only three clubs had won A grade premierships. North won the first three in 1946, 47 and 48, South won in 1949 and again in 1951 with Penola winning in 1950 and 52. The North side was full of talent and had three Mail Medal winners in its line-up – full forward Glen Evans (1949), half back Milton Arthurson (1951) and centreman Ian Adams (1950) – all talented players. Also it had the excellent tap ruckman Joe Waters, tough and talented centre half back Eric Roughana and were led by former West Adelaide and State player Johnnie Taylor. Its roving stocks were led by hard nut Brian McInerney and a young Jack Allison was at centre half forward, although later he would become a premiership centre half back at Tigerland. Kevin Pedlar who was also a future North premiership player was 19th man. Penola had the mercurial Mickey Davidson who was also a Mail Medal winner and Wilf Sprengel who would later play at Millicent and then become the Mid SE League secretary for many years was at centre half back for Penola and was among the best in that position in those days. Going into the match Eric Roughana and Jack Allison dominated the finals series to

finish off great seasons for each of them while Ian Adams in the centre had been in top nick for most of the season. In ruck, Penola’s John Miller who would later win two Mail Medals at centre half back was leading the first ruck and aided well by young Don Pollock who was a tall, strongly built ruckman with an amazing leap. Pollock would lead the Penola rucking division right through until the mid 1960s. Through the season Miller and Pollock had carried Penola to many victories with their tap work getting the ball to Penola rovers Ian Malcolm and Fred Pfeiffer. Pfeiffer’s pace around the packs had been instrumental in many dashes into the forward line where Mickey Davidson and ruck rovers David Scott and Jim McDonald were astute goal kickers. Davidson was the big threat to North. The previous week in the preliminary final against East he was outstanding. He was chosen as a forward but did a lot of damage up forward with five goals. He had played most of his career in the centre or ruck roving but with little striking power ahead of centre, as captain, he moved into attack and against East he kicked five goals in a match-winning performance. Davidson played the position in a different way to most full forwards who normally don’t venture far from the goal square. Davidson’s pace and strength allowed him to roam the forward line and his long kicking made him a danger if he won possession across half forward. What might also be significant was that North had played six home games at Vansittart Park that season and won all of them, giving them a “home ground” advantage over Penola. North and Penola finished top and second on the ladder at the end of the minor round so they certainly were the best two teams to fight out the premiership. Penola playing coach (but not captain) Murray Mooney, who had great experience as a league player with Norwood, had become a very clever tactician and his move of Davidson into attack had transformed the Penola side in the preliminary final.

GREENWOOD Mooney had been playing across half forward where his pace and rebound had been very effective. His big challenge was stopping the effective rucks and rovers and centreline of the Tigers which had been a great supply avenue during the season. Mooney placed great faith in Bungey in the centre to control Ian Adams while Mickey Boneham had pace and skill to do some damage on the wing. As predicted, Mooney and his selectors moved the Penola team around with some odds placements. Don Pollock was chosen to play half forward flank but was more likely to start on the ball while Mickey Davidson, as expected, was at full forward where he would come up against the consistent and long kicking North full back Ray Thompson. The battle between two hard nuts - Wilf Sprengel and Jack Allison would also be worth the admission fee alone as neither gave an inch or would take a backward step if things got tough. Of the four other SEBFL club coaches, two went for North and two chose Penola to win. Terry King (East) and Harry Dennes (West) both picked North to win, mainly due to the Tigers key positional strength and having a better balanced side Freddie Bolton (Millicent) and Doug Beaton (South) both selected Penola to win because of Penola’s determination to fight out the game right to the finish. PHOTO: North ruckman Joe Waters was in good form and his clash with Penola’s John Miller would be crucial to the outcome of the grand final.

MATCH REPORTS MILLICENT V WEST GAMBIER It was a match that lived up to its star billing as Millicent and West Gambier went toe to toe in a top of the table clash. IN the end, it was the Saints who prevailed by three in an arm wrestle contest that saw the sides rarely separated by more than a handful of goals. West was missing star shooter Sarah Ri er, who was at the 2022 Na onal Netball Championships as part of the silver medal winning South Australian line-up, as well as her sister Jade, who normally teams with Amy Cram in defence, while Millicent s ll had Lisa Duldig sidelined, as well as missing Demi Verbena. Those personnel issues saw a couple of debutantes take to the court with West eleva ng goal keeper Tayla Wilson-Smith and Millicent giving star junior mid courter Lillie Paul her first taste of the top grade. West had the be er of the early going as their fast ball movement was rarely challenged by the Saints defence line, with Lisa McGregor and Claire Hunter combining well to apply scoreboard pressure but the Saints did se le as Paige Nitschke took control of the a ack end of the court and by the first change it was Millicent by one. West again had the be er of the second but this me maintained the rage and with Amy Cram crea ng plenty of turnover ball and Hunter and McGregor con nuing to find good connec on with Mikaela Horrigan and Tara Bryant to ensure by the main break the Roos held a three goal advantage. Finding a way to goal was proving a lot tougher for the Saints but they did just enough to stay in touch, with Hannah Nitschke and Paige Nitschke doing a mountain of work to move the ball through the ght Roos defence. Defensively, at least, it was a different Saints line-up that came out a er the main break. Georgia Clarke ghtened up on McGregor, Por a McRae started to win some ball and Paul also started to make it harder for Horrigan to find the circle’s edge, while at the other end of the court, Daisy Tunkin started to use her speed to good effect and Sanderson stayed closer to home and had her best shoo ng quarter in terms of accuracy with 10 from 12. As the two teams headed into the final break, it was West by two, se ng up a tense final quarter. This me it was the Saints who came out the be er of the two teams and while the errors started to come for the Roos frontline, the Saints showed great pa ence as they looked to find Sanderson in space. Millicent worked their way to a five goal lead but the Roos were not done with and mounted a strong challenge, again on the back of Cram’s ability to create turnovers, with McGregor and Horrigan also ge ng some important defensive touches in the centre third, but in the end, me beat the Roos and the Saints remained on top and undefeated. For West, Hunter was a good target for the first three quarters, McGregor did her usual mountain of work and Horrigan con nued to feed the ball with precision.

Cram was clearly the Roos best, while WilsonSmith got some cri cal touches and Zoe Malseed had a superb ba le on the wing with Tunkin – the two young guns never far from each other’s side for the en rety of the contest. The other epic ba le was Hannah Nitschke and Tara Bryant in the centre. Neither gave an inch and they covered so much ground as they looked to be the main outlet op ons for their team mates. For the Saints, Sanderson was s ll a strong target, Paige NItschke slipped into the goal a ak role seamlessly, while Paul had some good moments, especially at cri cal mes in the final quarter where she created turnovers. Clarke had the tough task of controlling McGregor and had a strong second half, as well as being a key link player, while McRae anchored the defence well and was rarely out-rebounded, a s we l l a s ta k i n g a co u p l e o f p i vo ta l intercep ons. EAST GAMBIER V CASTERTON SANDFORD East Gambier has finally clocked up a convincing win and it coincided with them pu ng out their preferred star ng seven for the first me this season. The Bulldogs secured a 38 goal victory over Casterton Sandford – a team s ll wai ng on having all personnel available but there were some posi ves for the Cats as well. A dominant first quarter set up the win for the reigning premiers as Sarah Lock and Amryn Bosko combined for 16 from 20 to set up a 12 goal quarter me lead. The East shoo ng duo con nued to combine well, as they look to establish their new combina on, and shared the shoo ng du es evenly, which will challenge opposi on defensive teams. The Cats did struggle with supply when it came to scoring but the combina on of sisters and Mikayla Rice showed some promise and with the sisters teaming up a er quarter me, it also freed Gaby Tomkins up to her more familiar role of wing a ack, rather than the shoo ng circle. The other huge posi ve for the Cats was the return to court of Madalene Cleary, who played a half at the defensive end and will only be be er for the run as she returns from an ACL injury. The second quarter was the Cats best as they matched it with the Bulldogs for much of the quarter, only going down by five goals and g e n e ra n g s i g n i fi c a n t l y m o re s c o r i n g opportuni es for quarter, with Mikayka Rice conver ng seven from nine to make her mark. The Bulldogs responded strongly a er the main break, though, with a 1907 third quarter, led by a perfect shoo ng quarter from Amryn Bosko as both Bosko and Lock were able to capitalise on the strong defensive work of The Bosko, Morgan Amy and Bo Creek. In the final quarter, East con nued to dominate but again the posi ve for the Cats was the debut of Chloe Foster, who entered the clash at goal a ack and ne ng five from six in a composed display.

The other highlight of the game was the mid court ba le between Scarle Jarrad, who has been her side’s best in all three rounds, and East co-coach Emily Hunter, as they ran hard, competed for everything and looked to give their side the edge. In the end, the experience of the Bulldogs and their more se led line-up ensured they were never really troubled while the Cats would now be completely focussed on hos ng South Gambier this weekend. NORTH GAMBIER V SOUTH GAMBIER The Demons have final done it – taken the premiership points on ANZAC Day. The high quality, physical contest at Vansi art Park saw South Gambier lead narrowly at every change before remaining composed in the last to actually extend their lead and secure a 10 goal victory. It has been many years since South Gambier has got the be er of North in the April 25 clash and it was only really with five minutes to play that the result looked assured as North Gambier con nued to work their way back into conten on. The victory was built on the back of relentless defensive pressure from the Demons and it was Ellie Bouchier, who won the Shirley Underwood medal for best on court, who created much of the turnover ball. Her combina on in circle defence with mother Brandi Bouchier worked seamlessly together to make access to the Tigers goalers difficult and with Ruby Richter and Imogen Walker working hard to pressure the feeders, South was able to force the usually composed Tigers frontline into errors. Were it not for the outstanding finishing from Caroline Wakefield, who ne ed 41 from 42, the Tigers may not have stayed so close in the contest and her connec on with Brianna Walters, who did not stop running and presen ng all day, ensured the scoreboard never blew out. Wakefield also received good service from Macey Griffith, as they look to build their new look shoo ng combina on. At the defensive end, Mel Renko was at her ght checking best and her combina on with Zahra Crough-Healon had some moments of brilliance, especially in the rebounding stakes, but as a new combina on, they will only get be er and working in synch as the season wears on. When the Demons were close against East Gambier in round two they lost their composure but there was to be no repeat this me, as Richter and the Bouchier defensive combina on con nued to create turnovers, while Walker and Megan Reid controlled the ball un l the space opened up for the young shoo ng combina on of Alyssa Duncan and Lara Munro. The frene c final quarter was all about opportunity, as the Demons held the Tigers frontline to only 11 scoring a empts, while genera ng 20 of their own.

ROUND PREVIEWS C A S T E R TO N SA N D F O R D V S O U T H GAMBIER This weekend poses a big challenge for South Gambier. The Demons need to back up their impressive win over North Gambier on ANZAC Day with a strong performance and the premiership points when they head to Island Park. The Cats will have set themselves for this clash and would be hopeful ge ng some game me into Madalene Cleary, on her return from an ACL, and Gaby Tomkins, returning from pregnancy, combined with the strong form of Scarle Jarrad and defender Caeleigh Humphries, will see Casterton Sandford challenge South Gambier. Mikayla Rice and Charlo e Rice, also showed promise as a shoo ng combina on last round, while the likes of Ebany Jarrad, Makayla Hutchins and Claire Foster are all though young compe tors who never give an inch. They, will, however, be taking on a South line-up brimming with confidence a er knocking off the Tigers. Ellie Bouchier, in her first game for 2022, was outstanding in defence, taking home the Shirley Underwood Medal, while Ruby Richter also player her best game for 2022 on the defensive wing, picking up cri cal turnover ball. The shoo ng combina on of Alyssa Duncan and Lara Munro also showed great composure in the ANZAC clash. All signs point to a Demons victory – which would be another first for the club in some me, back to back victories.

MILLICENT V NORTH GAMBIER North Gambier will be disappointed with losing their first ANZAC Day clash in many seasons and rebounding will not be easy when they head to Mclaughlin Park to take on the undefeated Saints. But the Tigers have been a club in recent seasons that always seem to rise to the occasion of playing the compe on benchmark Saints and they will no doubt be looking to challenge again. Caroline Wakefield is in stellar form, missing only one goal in the frene c ANZAC Day clash and her ba le with Port McRae will be one of the most pivotal of the match. At t h e o t h e r e n d , t h e d e f e n s i v e combina on of Mel Renko and Zahra Crough-Healon showed glimpses of what it could develop into and they will need to be at their best to quell the scoring power of Millicent, with Tabatha Sanderson, Demi Verbena and Paige Nitschke, all accurate finishers. The ba le in the mid court will be intriguing as Brianna Walters, who was outstanding with her hard running both ways on ANZAC Day, takes on the likes of Hannah Nitschke and Daisy Tunkin, and if they do not find a way to quell the classy Tiger, Wakefield will end up with plenty of ball. Last round, Millicent was able to withstand a strong challenge from West Gambier, with the Roos controlling the contest for much of the match, and if the Saints got out of that without their coach Donna Denton and star goaler Demi Verbena, they should take the points over the Tigers, who are s ll working out their best combina on and developing the chemistry and understanding with a totally new look lineup at both ends of the court.

WEST GAMBIER V EAST GAMBIER Having let last weekend’s clash with Millicent slip out of their grasp, West Gambier will be keen for a strong four quarter performance over reigning premiers East Gambier. The Roos will welcome back sisters Sarah Ri er and Jade Ri er to the court, which will also help their cause. Sarah was part of the silver medal winning South Australian 19 & Under netball team and Jade was in Hobart suppor ng the campaign and both will no doubt be keen to get back to their team mates. The shoo ng combina on of Sarah Ri er and Lisa McGregor are arguably the best in the compe on and with Mikaela Horrigan and Tara Bryant delivering the ball, the Roos frontline will test the East defensive line, with the ba le between Bo Creek, who leads the east defensive end, and McGregor will be on of the matchdeciding ba les. At the other end of the court, Amy Cram is coming off a best on court performance in round three, and she will be eager to resume her partnership with Jade Ri er, as they look to deny easy scoring opportuni es for Sarah Lock and Amryn Bosko. Of course, much of that will depend on the mid court pressure applied by the Roos, with Emily Hunter and Tarsh McCallum, two of the highest quality mid courters in the A Grade compe on. East will certainly enter the clash with more confidence on the back of a strong win in round three and the first ou ng of their preferred line-up but it is hard to see who the Roos won’t take the win and bounce back from their first loss of 2022.

MILLICENT

Millicent Red, Black & White We hope everyone enjoyed the weekend off for Easter with their families and were excited to be back playing at home for Round 3 against West Gambier. Seniors Once again, all senior teams are to be commended on their flexibility and versatility, seeing a large number of players play multiple high-intensity games on Saturday to assist in all our teams coming away with a win. A Grade – Millicent 51 def West 48 The A Grade girls had an enthralling game right to the end. Saints reshuffled their line-up with the absence of Demi Verbena which in turn seen Lillie Paul make her A Grade debut. Both sides battled hard all game, but it was the saints who lifted and stepped up to their defensive pressure to create turnovers and fought back to take back the lead in the last quarter. Hannah Nitschke ran hard all game at C gaining intercepts at pivotal times while Georgia Clarke at GD showed she can match it with the best. A Reserve- Millicent 61 def West 42 The A reserve side saw a debut from Jemma Hayward on Saturday, a new face to the club this season. Jemma fitted into the goals combinations with ease alongside Kate Walker to lead the side to a convincing win of 61-42, with Jemma being named best player after displaying a hard work ethic all game with her accuracy on show. We also saw Tiarna Verbena step up into the side on Saturday, as well as Sophie Ellis to make a return to the club for the game to help out the side who were short on numbers. Although the team was new to playing with one another, all players made the most of the opportunity, playing some controlled and competitive netball. B Grade- Millicent 84 def West 23 Another fantastic win, played in some good spirits and sportsmanship in beautiful conditions. All players adjusted well to small positional changes, showing great versatility to the group. Looking forward to how our season unfolds as we are beginning to gel as a team, let’s keep building! C Grade- Millicent 55 def West 23 The C grade side produced another strong win this week over West Gambier with the final score of 55-23. It was a great defensive game all the way down the court from the attack line into defence, which was made clear with defending duo coach, Kalli Brown and Kate Patten being named in the best players from the game. Players were able to adjust with ease to being moved around and placed in some different positions, allowing them to maintain intensity and fast paced gameplay for all four quarters. Juniors Our junior sides were also able to come away with wins against some competitive West sides which put our

teams to the test.

V

17 & Under – Millicent 48 def West 35 The 17 & Under side were affected by the ongoing impact of COVID with limited numbers in the side, with the majority of players being asked to play a second game in a senior team for the day. Poppy Venn and Piper Paul stepped up from the 15s to help out and slotted well into the team to create a defensive game enabling lots of turnovers which the attacking end were able to capitalise on with goalies finishing well in the circle to bring the final score to 48 to West’s 35. Under 15As – Millicent 52 def West 23 The 15A side had a strong start to the game with girls doing everything we had discussed. The girls took some time to adapt to changes made throughout the game, but still managed to come home with a win in some warm conditions once again.

Under 15Bs- Millicent 25 def West 23 A tighter game this week in warm conditions, which saw girls having to step up and earn their possessions for 4 quarters. Millie and Eva combined well in defence, tight all game causing many headaches for West attack. Lexi stood strong at WD in her first netball game, earning the Fasta Pasta voucher. Poppy ran strong in C, with Bree finding her feet at WA, Sarah and Zoe worked hard all game, shooting well against tough defence. Well done on a good win girls. Under 13As- Millicent 52 def West 16 Another solid performance from all players to give us a convincing win over West. The girls demonstrated their versatility, being able to play in multiple positions at a strong level with different combinations being made each quarter. Lots of defensive pressure was created all over the court throughout the game, enabling lots of scoring opportunities for us and limiting West’s which was shown on the scoreboard. Under 13Bs- Millicent 25 def West 23

North Gambier

Under 11 North 14 def by South 18 Lovely morning to be playing netball and you all played so well. Fantastic game from south with both teams challenging the lead for the whole 6 quarters. We used the court space much better this week but we do need to make front position when we call for the ball. All in all a good result for our 3rd game. Best players: Emily Berkefield and Piper Mulraney

Under 13B North 27 def South 7 The team performed well in the game against South. We worked hard on our timing when attacking. We also worked well by clearing out and leading towards the ball. Carey Grivell in GS shot very accurately as well as moving to receive the ball. She was also player of the match. Best players: Carey Grivell and Piper Lucas Under 13A North 38 def South 17 The team had a good game against South. The attacking side used the court space to come forward and meet the ball. The defence was strong and solid. Grace Collins did very well in defence by picking up any loose balls. She was named the player of the match. Best players: Grace Collins and Raine Daramani Under 15B North 30 def South 28 he girls came out strong an executed well. With strong defence all court the girls were able to keep control. Some accurate shooting but Milly and Mia saw has lead at every change. We a few lapses South managed to get back in it but we held on for the 2 goal victory. Best players: Milly Allen and Bella Stafford

Under 11s – Millicent 33 def West 4 With ever changing circumstances each week affecting all of our teams, it has been great to watch players step up and put themselves forward to play multiple games in one day, as well as play in higher grades. A big thank you is also to be given to our coaches and committee members working hard behind the scenes to make these changes. Today, our club is celebrating our Breast Cancer round. We invite all players, officials and spectators to come to the game today with a touch of pink in support of this round, with our Ladies Day event also kicking off at 4:45pm for the twilight A grade Footy game against North with plenty of drinks, nibbles and games for all in the private marquee.

Under 15A North 59 def South 7 A strong start to finish by all players. Ava and Cara were instrumental wherever they were placed and made crucial tips or strong drives onto the ring. Kelsie Anderson and Ruby Mitchell both had stand out games with many intercepts and rebounds. Maggie Collins combined well with the Macey and Elodie to provide leads down the court. Sarah Brown always the quiet achiever is finding plenty of space on the court. The girls look forward to the challenge that lies with Millicent. Best players: Ruby Mitchell and Kelsie Anderson

Yellow & Black Under 17’s North 29 def by South 67 This week we had a few players out, which wasn’t ideal as we knew South were going to be tough opponents. We started a little slow, allowing South to get a comfortable lead, but despite this we did not drop our heads. The second half was much stronger. The girls worked hard on creating space in attack and blocking the drive in defense, which brought us back into the contest. Our defensive pressure created a number of turnovers that were converted with some sharp shooting, narrowing the margin. Although we did not achieve the outcome we had hoped for, it was a great game that we can build on. A big thank you also to Ava Collins and Cara Nulty for stepping up and helping us out. Best players: Alysha Coon and Gianna Morello C Grade North 31 def South 50 A stunning day for the Anzac Day match. The team started off strong with accurate shooting and movement in the ring from Zarly Jones and Keeley Quinn. The defence was tight and made it hard work for the South attack. South slowly crept away with the lead, however the p re s s u re t h at t h e N o r t h g i r l s maintained throughout the game didn’t let them get away too easily! West Gambier Blue & Red It was a sensational day for netball at Millicent last Saturday with a few very close games and lots of positives to take away. Congratulations to Under 15 player Lucy Simpson, who played her 100th game for West over the weekend! Under 11s Last Saturday we faced a very strong Millicent side. It was great to see Zoe shoot her first goal! Jorja played a great game getting some nice touches. Harper and Aggie tried hard in defence. Chaneil improved as the game went on. Kenzie played her best game for the season. Little Phoebe and Kenna gave their all, picking up lots of ground balls. Thanks to Eva and Hannah for sitting on our bench. West 4 – Millicent 33 Best players Mackenzie Fisher and Jorja Disher

Under 13B This was going to be one of the hardest weeks with half of the team away. We had Libby, Alice, Lila, Analeigh and Swaye fill in for us. With Hannah’s first game for the season she showed why she was in the 13s with her exceptional defensive skills. Eva showed how effortlessly she can move and shoot in goal attack and knew where to put the ball for our other goalies. Matilda dominated at both ends, naturally a defender and attacker showing her confidence and maturity in leading. Ella moved throughout the mid court well. Unfortunately we didn’t win only going down by 2, special outstanding mentions to Lila and her 9 goals in one quarter and Libby for stepping up as WA and then into GD and having a screamer of a game. West 23 – Millicent 25 Best players Ella Mckenny and Swaye Lindner Game day awards: Eva povey and Hannah Jackson Under 13A Covid has continued to disrupt our trainings and game day preparations and we certainly weren’t up to the challenge of taking on Millicent’s physical game. We walked away with plenty to work on and will be focusing on making sure we get the basics right. West 16 – Millicent 52 Best players Alice Allen and Lila Pearson Under 15B We took on a strong attacking Millicent side. We were lucky to have Hayley Cowie and Maggy Dyson help the team out. We could not have been prouder of the girls determination. Our attackers worked incredibly well together to gain shooting opportunities, helped out by the mid court who never stopped running. The defence of Zarah and Macy was the best I have seen from them. This game showed the girls exactly what they are capable of, and its exciting to see how they grow as a team each week. West 22 – Millicent 23 Best Players Zarah Sugden and Macy Pearson Under 15A A tough game against a quality opposition last week. Lucy moved well in goals making the most of her scoring opportunities, with Ellie at the other end defending hard against her opposition. Tully played in multiple positions, showing her versatility. We had a chance to try a few combinations and with a bit of practice we will see it pay off with a win. Welcome back to Maggy who played a great game in defence. A big congratulations to Lucy playing in her 100th game. West 23 – Millicent 52 Best players Lucy Simpson and Ellie Xanthopoulos Game day awards Tully Lindner and Ellie Xanthopoulos

Under 17s We worked on coming forward and lots of pressure at training and right from the get go the under 17 girls put this into practice. Millicent are always a force and can get into your head, but my girls played their game and didn’t let the day get to them. Our first ¼ we ended up 10 to 7 down which was a great start. Jordy in GK and Charlotte GD kept the pressure up all ¼ and didn’t let the Millicent goalies have it all their own way. Stevi at

C and Kirra at WD were pivotal in our defence efforts as well. Our second ¼ got away on us, but to the girls didn’t drop their heads. Hannah and Aleisha kept working the ball around the circle but a few wayward passes let Millicent get on top of us and we were down by 16 at half time. The 3rd quarter was much better and we were very even. The day was quite warm and our girls didn’t give up. Amity came on at C giving us some fresh legs. She worked well with Halle getting the ball down the court into our goalies but by ¾ time we were down by 20. To our girls determination and never give up attitude our last ¼ was our best. We kept up with our plan and it really worked well. Jordy went into goals with Aleisha and straight away made an impact on our score line. With some excellent passes into the goals from Halle and Stevi, we pegged back the score to be down by only 13 at the final whistle. Daena and I had hard time to pick only 2 best players, every girl did their job today and I was so proud of each and every one of them. West 35 – Millicent 48 Best players Stevi Clayton and Charlotte Scott Game day awards Jordy Hereper and Aleisha Pearson. C Grade Really tough game against a strong Millicent side over the weekend! With two of our defenders out, there was added pressure applied to our remaining players to work hard for all four quarters. Despite the score margin, our girls played and fought so hard in many aspects of the match. Lots of positives to be taken as well as constructivism to improve this week at training and prepare for another strong game against East this coming weekend! ️ West 23 – Millicent 55 Best Players Lisa Boyd and Olivia James

B Grade Player availability continued to plague the B grade for our match up against Millicent, calling on Maddy Sutherland and Lisa Boyd to help out. Unfortunately Maddy suffered an ankle injury in the first quarter which saw Kirby Hunter take the court in an out of position GK. Kirby and Abby, in her first game this season, battled hard against a smooth Millicent goal circle. At the other end Kristy, Carly and Ra faced some stiff opposition from the defence. The game had a lot of positives, with the team coming together for some great passages of play down the court. Lisa Boyd played an awesome game at WD, while Kristy had a solid game in the circle earning them both game day awards. West 23 – Millicent 84 Best players Ra Hare and Kellie Buck A Reserve A tough gig this week coming up against a strong Millicent line up after the break. Millicent opened strongly and created a lead which we struggled to close over the rest of the game. Many positional changes added to us being a little unsettled in finding our flow but on a positive, exposed areas of opportunity to work on going forward. To their credit the girls worked hard all game and finished the last quarter a more determined team. West 42 – Millicent 61 Best players Chelsea Tremelling and Jasmine Davey A Grade Firstly a big thankyou to both Claire and Tayla for stepping up into the A grade this week - you both played vital roles in our team. It was a hard fought game with a few mistakes in the last quarter letting us down. The pressure built in our defensive end was brilliant which gave our attack plenty of opportunities to convert. A few things to work on and to take away from the game. Keep putting in the hard work and our results will come. West 48 – Millicent 51 Best players Amy Cram and Mikaela Horrigan Good luck to all our teams this week, we are back at home taking on East. KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE RED AND THE BLUE! GO WEST!

A GRADE - East 64 defeated Casterton 26 This was the confidence boost we need heading into the next two weeks. Our transitions across the court worked well, and our composure to slow down when needed and feed into the right space to our goalies worked beautifully. Fantastic defensive pressure by all really gave us a great lead. Solid first quarter was exactly what we wanted, and we continued from there. Need to work even harder this week. finishing well under the pressure of the match… Congrats to coach Tanya Hood who has broken the drought…

Hopefully the girls can build on that win in the coming weeks, This time is was Ellie Bouchier including this weekend… taking home the medal after she played arguably her best Th C Grade got the job done, game since being elevated to A while the 17 & Under girls Grade last season. played a superb four quarter Ellie combined perfectly with mum Brandi to make life tough for the North shooters and while Caro still only missed one for the day, it was the lack of opportunity that was the key. Speaking of best games – Ruby Richter was on fire as she pressured the North feeders to make sure the passing into Caro wasn’t accurate. Her tight checking and ability to get her hands on the ball to create turnover was amazing. Imi and Megan shared the centre and wing attack roles and they ran hard all day and in the frenetic final quarter, were really safe with ball in hand, making sure the ball as delivered with accuracy to Lara and Alyssa… Lara and Alyssa combined well all match, with Alyssa doing a mountain of work up the court but also clearing good space for Lara in the shooting circle, with both girls attacking the post and
