2022 OFFICIAL PROGRAMME ROUND 6 - MAY 14

Saints remain undefeated Portia McRae helps the Saints remain undefeated and the team to beat in season 2022 in WBNA action

SOUTH GAMBIER v MILLICENT NORTH GAMBIER v EAST GAMBIER CASTERTON SANDFORD v WEST GAMBIER

GAME PREVIEW South Gambier v Millicent After the opening segment of the 2022 Bendigo Bank Western Border Football League season, two teams appear head and shoulders above the rest. South Gambier and Millicent have proven their worth as the two runaway premiership contenders at this stage and they are primed for their next installment in their developing rivalry. After the Demons drew first blood at McLaughlin Park, the Saints will be hoping to return the favour when they meet at Blue Lake Sports Park. The only time the rivals met at the venue last year a goal-kicking shootout between Brayden Kain and Gene Robinson occurred where the latter scored more goals, but the former had the last laugh. Only Kain will return and he is in ominous form having kicked six goals last week and he only needs four more majors to bring up the 300goal milestone. Although the likes of Brett O’Neil, Mason Hein, Hamish Stevens and Emerson Marks are on the sidelines, the Demons still possess a lot of talent and Brock Keding has been in unbelievable form flying off the wing. With every grade from Under 14’s to A Grade undefeated on top of the ladder, South can do no wrong at the moment and has an embarrassment of riches at the selection table which makes them tough to beat. “There seems to be a little bit of a rivalry shaping up between us and Millicent over the last couple of years, so these games are always something we look forward to,” Kain said. “When playing the benchmark, you always see where you are at. “They probably play better than us on a bigger ground, so we will have to adjust and try to nullify it. “Getting that repetition against the good teams will be the biggest challenge this year, so we are really excited and might have a few players back. “We want to show the competition going 5-0 is not just a lucky streak.”

backing a young team which believes it can do anything. Millicent’s department of youth has the power at the moment after a side minus Clint Gallio, Tom Hutchesson and Tom Renzi completed a major turnaround away from home over East Gambier. A total of 17 of 22 players were 21 and under and they still overcame a fired-up Bulldogs team. The Saints were fuelled by belief and leading the way were Josh Werchon and Kade Varcoe, while many mature others played big roles which will cause some headaches for Gallio if he or the other experienced heads are ready to return. “The competition is pretty even, but we are really looking forward to playing South again,” Gallio said. “They are a good side with a few players coming back and a big oval does sort of suit us, but East was not overly big and we were able to control the footy there too, so it will be interesting.” No matter who runs out on Saturday afternoon, fans will be in for a treat with the players and even the umpires ready to express themselves. Usually, the clubs call up players from Adelaide, but this time the men in green will be boosted with four SANFL umpires coming to the Blue Lake City for the big game. The quartet have been officiating in the SANFL system for numerous years and are led by former Limestone Coast umpire Ben Thiel, who is excited for the homecoming. North Gambier v East Gambier No matter where they are on the ladder, North and East Gambier always put on a show and Saturday’s contest will be no different. The Tigers hold the high ground after winning the opening round clash where conditions played a factor.

North has also shown more promise throughout the season and appears the nearest challenger to South and Millicent. After a series of losses, the yellow and black burst back to life last with a Sam Stafford six-goal However, the Saints will fancy their chances haul enough to topple Casterton Sandford.

F.L. Nick McInerney has not stopped going in hard and Brett Kennedy has done good things in the ruck since his return. After winning his first North v East game as coach, Ben Hardy is determined to maintain the record at home. “We are looking forward to another big rivalry game against East,” he said. “The boys will be firing for that because it is a big day for the club with the game and a few functions.” The Bulldogs want to even the honours and prove they can compete with those above them. East has played well in patches, but needs a four-quarter effort after kicking 1.6 after quarter time proved costly in the Indigenous Game. Watchout for Jayden Eldridge, Matt Scanlon, Keenan Dwyer and Garret Ha. Casterton Sandford v West Gambier It will be high stakes at Island Park as both sides search for a much-needed win. Casterton Sandford got the job done in round 1 convincingly, but is still searching for its first victory on home turf and Hamish McCrae and Diarmid Cleary are determined to do it. It might have turned out to be a -point loss, but West Gambier should have been encouraged by what it produced in round 4. The Roos pushed top team South to the edge with the help of Michael Minuzzo and Dale Robbins, but were overwhelmed after half time and will aim for a more complete performance. Both sides will be still licking their wounds from tough defeats last week and want to rebound well.

W h at a s p e c i a l d ay to b e involved in. Being a part of an indigenous round for the first time and wearing a specially designed indigenous jumper was a great feeling and privilege for the players involved. A great initiative by East and hopefully something the league decides to run with for all clubs in the future.

The Seniors started slow in the first quarter and allowed east out to a four goal lead at quarter time. From then on the boys fixed a few things and kept them to one goal for the next 3/4. The pressure around the ball carrier was evident and then on the outside we used our speed to a d va n t a g e . S o m e o f o u r younger brigade in Kade Varcoe and Josh Werchon got us going again which was pleasing to see, as we had some experienced leaders out. In the end a great result for our young squad to come away with a gutsy win!

The U18’s and U16’s both had strong wins, while the U14’s went down in a close one. On the back oval, the U12A’s, C’s and E’s all played some exciting footy. If you get the chance, make an effort to get out and have a look at these kids as its enjoyable to watch. Congratulations to Craig Gysbers who, if selected, plays his 200th A Grade game this Saturday. Although wanting to play more Ressies in the twilight of his career, Craig is only too happy to put his hand up and help out the Seniors when required and 200 games is great reward to go alongside his premiership medal. All the best Gizzy. Back to Jens Hotel tonight for presentations.

The Ressies had a good win in a game that was more competitive than the score may suggest. As with the Seniors, it was great to see the younger players in the team leading the way and a big thanks to the 5 U18’s that filled in and more than held their own. With 3 wins through the first round the boys will look to consolidate their position in the top 3 across the next round.

Sam Willis’s experience in the young Saint group has been vital to their success so far this year.

North Gambier Yellow & Black In a pleasing return the winners circle, the A Grade had a good win, easing a bit of self inflicted pressure on coach Hardy. Sam Stafford kicked 6 goals in a dominating performance and for the first time in a few weeks it was hard to pick the best players, due to the performances of many, with other awards given to Brett Kennedy, Tim McInerney, Jordan Hollit, Jake Schutz and Will Thompson. The reserves had one of their stronger sides in and with the U18s appreciating only playing one game, they posted their 2nd win for the year, which is a credit to the hard work of coach Young. Best players were Ethan Norman, Zayne Young, new comer in Izaak Rosier, Jay Turner, Tom Flett and Jacob Arthurson. Coach Shepherdson could be a little frustrated with the U16s after leaving most of their scoring till the last quarter, falling 9 points short. When these guys put 4 quarters together, there results will improve. Best players this week were named Deacon Ilsley, Intha Phutt, Darcy Arthurson, Aaron Dally and Cooper Turner. The U14s got beaten by a bigger stronger Casterton side, with the

V

game finishing early due to a nasty injury to Luca Roulstone, who we hope makes a quick recovery, especially given her representative commitments coming up. Awards were given to Sam Baron, Elmer Buckland, Sav Crispino and Esaie Kulimushi. Special mention to the 12Cs who kicked off the day and looked to be having a great time.

Big day at Vansittart Park today, hosting East Gambier, with must win games in all grades, and the opening of the long awaited womens facility, which is a credit to the original project committee in Travis Hole, Peter Allen, Sharon Day, Jamie Walters and of course Peter Cavanagh. You can all be well proud of your efforts and hope all users of the facility going forward appreciate same. Tonight, we have our player auction and shuffle night. Get you syndicates together to pick up a player group, noting every group will get something back. Thanks to our major sponsors, Stuckey Electrical Contracts and KFC.

With the first real signs of winter last Saturday I think the only ones happy were the farmers with a much needed dose of rain.

U14's our only win for the day the boys had a good slog in the rain best players Lawrence, Saunders, McCracken, Carey ,Mee and Vincent . U16's were out scored all game til the last quarter where they matched a strong Millicent team hopefully gives the lads confidence going into next week best players Te o d o ro, M c K i n n o n , T i l l e y, Lawrence, Gollan and McCracken. U18's were under manned but they had a crack all day best on ground was Dwyer who followed that form into the seniors next was Graney, Smith, Puhara, Tteodoro and Price .

East Gambier Red & Black Seniors with a pre match smoking ceremony and wearing for the first time our indigenous jumper celebrating the culture and there contribution to our great game. It had our boys really focussed and we came out in the first quarter and kicked 4 goals to zip then the Millicent team must of got a good spray at quarter time cause that was about it for our side, we got out played for the rest of the day by the reigning premiers and a few injuries didn't help our cause. You have to be on your game for 4 quarters against this team, best p l aye rs we re C o n n e r co a c h Eldridge, Lock, Flamank, Walters, Gaffney and Rumbelow.

Again the club would like to thank MFNC for coming onboard with for the game, Marcus Wanganeen for designing our jumper, Little Rippa Brewery and Ag Spec for sponsoring the jumpers and everyone else behind the scene Reserves came into the game who made it happen. feeling confident of competitive performance but faced a Millicent side with some very experienced Thanks to Rick and Robyn Adair ex senior players who were just too and family for coming to support good. The side is starting to get a the first Ray Adair memorial game little settled so hopefully very soon which will be a yearly event they'll gel and get that first win between the two sides. best player was Hunt who ran all day on the ball followed by Paech, We head over to Vansittart Park Shepherd, Graney, Dethmore and this week then back at the club that night for the mouse cup not to Carter. late to get tickets.

Everyone has played each other once Cat Fans so we welcome West Gambier to Island Park, they were very accommodating with their hosting of us in Round 1, so lets return the favour today. Last week our Juniors all did very well against North, the Under 16's holding out a fast finishing North, Kaeden Talay kicking 3 goals and with some score involvements was named B.O.G. And the defencive efforts of Rufaro Makore, Riley Hornibrook, Rhys Southern and Sam Craig were also acknowledged. The Under 14's stood up well in the conditions, Jack Rhook booting 3 goals and Jagger Geary 2 goals, with better p l aye rs go i n g to C o n n o r Stephens, Blake Kurzman, Re g h a n Pa rs o n s a n d t h e tenacious Kirby Vise.

good hard goers and will be looking to get revenge for the first round loss, West have only dropped the one game, today may be their second.

After the game today presentations will be on followed by Meals, tomorrow the social club have organised a Champagne breakfast before the Casterton Races, which should be a pretty good show. If you are thinking of going though don't hold anything back today, cheer on the Cats and if you are a little hoarse tomorrow, oh well, Carn Cats! Thank-you to all our valued sponsors including Boonaroo, Nutrien Ag Solutions, Bendigo Bank, and Casterton Secondary College

Upcoming Events : May 15th Champagne Breakfast (Sunday) : May 28th - Family Feud Unfortunately the Ressies and :June 18th - Miss Casterton Sen io rs co u ld n 't get th e chocolates, this week we hope for a change in fortune for the older Cats and for the Juniors to keep on doing what they do best. West knocked off North when they last met in the Seniors so Kaneos lads will need to be on their toes, Rick Killey kicked a bag last week so it would be nice if the boys can keep up the good delivery into the forward line. Last week we ventured to BLSP to face the might of South and unfortunately we did not have a win on the day but all sides acquitted themselves well and if the Seniors had taken their chances the score line may have been a little bit different. Thank you to all those people who came back to the club for tea it was much appreciated. Onto Casterton and if we can

FOOTY JENS HOTEL

WITH Saluting the champions: JOCK O’BRIEN Top level cricketer and footballer IT was a Friday in mid 2005 and East Gambier was celebrating 40 years since their first premiership in 1965 in the Western Border Football League when there was a knock on my office door at The Border Watch. Standing there to greet me was Jock O’Brien who had travelled from Melbourne to be at the reunion. At that time O’Brien was president of the very strong North Melbourne Past Players Association – a club where he played 33 VFL games with distinction in the back pocket during the late 1950s and early 1960s. It had only been a couple of weeks earlier when I had written an article claiming that Jock O’Brien was among the best fast bowlers I played against. At the time we played against each other in the mid 1960s I was just a raw teenager making my way in Barber Shield ranks but playing against the best often brought out the best in you – a fast-track to maturity if you like – and that was certainly the case when facing Jock O’Brien. He had called in to my office to thank me for the kind words I had written in that article and we chatted for more than an hour about the many battles we enjoyed against each other before he headed off for the weekend celebrations. It was in the spring of 1964 when O’Brien arrived at East Gambier Football Club as their prized recruit. When the 1965 footy season began he had an immediate impact in the centre position. East had yet to win a premiership in A grade and O’Brien was probably the difference – the vital missing link - between some of their “also-ran” teams and the side they put out on the field in 1965. O’Brien did not let East down and played some significant and telling games during that season. In the preliminary final against North, the Tigers sent defender John Brookes into the midfield to tag O’Brien and he did that task well, so much so that at three quarter time coach Fred Hepner switched O’Brien to half forward but North erred in not sending Brookes with him. In a flash O’Brien turned the game around with some brilliant play and East won their way into the grand final and their first premiership. One point about O’Brien which some may not know is a story told by former East forward Dennis “Shiner” Smith. He told me after each training session at McDonald Park O’Brien and the two wingmen - Brian “Brinny” Lane and Dennis Sutton would race each other across the oval in a sprint to finish off their training. Both Lane and Sutton were extremely fast and Lane was the quicker of the two but as Smith says, they were never able to beat O’Brien. He was super quick for a man who was solidly built, perhaps a comparison would line him up similar in size to the famous Ron Barassi. In 1966 O’Brien won the local media award for the best player in the WBFL season and West’s Barrie Hudson

was runner-up and also won the best league player under 21. (There is a photo posted elsewhere on this site). In cricket, O’Brien had superb credentials. He played state for Tasmania and was selected to play in an Australian Combined XI (which is one step away from Test selection) in the early 1960s against the touring MCC team and played at a high level in Melbourne. When he arrived in Mount Gambier he was snapped up by Mil Lel which already had recruited Merv Ayris, giving them a potent and lethal opening attack. O’Brien had plenty of stamina to go with his pace and could bowl unchanged all day, sometimes bowling 40 overs in a day’s play. He could bowl at express pace but his real weapon was he was dangerous. After coming off his long run-up he would switch to a shorter run-up but was just as quick. His ability to get the ball up off a good length into the batsman’s rib and throat area always made him a difficult and dangerous bowler. As well, he had a natural outswinger which at his pace made him difficult to drive. He also had an ability to cut the ball away, even on the hard wickets. No sooner had the 1965-66 season started and it became apparent Mil Lel had a super opening attack and O’Brien was immediately selected into the Mount Gambier Whitty Trophy line-up. In a game at Mil Lel against South Gambier early in his first 1965-66 season O’Brien nearly pulled off one of the great bowling feats of all-time when he took a hattrick in the first innings and in the second innings had taken two wickets in two balls with last man in being Bob Hazel when he, as South skipper, declared the innings closed. The declaration caused plenty of angst among the Mil Lel camp as Bob Hazel, who was one of the worst number 11 batsmen one could find, was hardly expected to avoid being the third person in the hat trick. The match was played on the notoriously dangerous Mil Lel wicket which had numerous cracks and made batting extremely difficult. After O’Brien picked up the hat trick in the first innings South’s Kym Holmes did likewise in Mil Lel’s first innings. It was in that match that I first encountered the pace of O’Brien and even though I was only 18 at the time, over the next couple of years we had some interesting battles and surprisingly I always made runs against him. In that match I was the only batsman in four innings to pass 23 when I scored 58 not out in our second innings to help South win outright. I was at the non-striker’s end when O’Brien picked up the two wickets in the second innings so I heard some of the commentary (if you could call it that) about Hazel’s declaration. They weren’t happy! The following year Mil Lel were a definite chance for the premiership and played South in the Barber Shield grand final with O’Brien coming off his long run throughout the day. He ripped through the early batting to have South 3/39 but then Bill McGregor and I righted the ship. I

GREENWOOD scored 104 but also copped a blow to the face just below my left eye (no helmets in those days) when I mistimed the pace of one of O’Brien’s bumpers when trying to hook. I was on 48 and hooked a bouncer to the boundary to bring up my 50. Then O’Brien steamed in and bowled another bouncer - this time a lot quicker – halfway through my hook shot I knew I was in trouble as the ball cannoned into my cheek. It was clever bowling and left me with a black eye and blood streaming from my face but I batted on after a short break retired hurt and O’Brien did not give an inch, nor did I want one, but at the end of the day we shared a respect for each other that remains strong to this day. After I reached my century, O’Brien got me out with a “jaffa” which jagged away sharply to be caught behind with the second new ball. I am honest in saying if I received that ball first up three hours earlier I would have made a duck and the honours would have gone O’Brien’s way and Mil Lel would have won the flag. That’s how fickle cricket can be. In that grand final O’Brien showed his stamina and skill to send down 26 overs of genuine pace to collect 5/88 and then, when batting, scored 30 not out but Mil Lel fell well short of the South target. As an all-round sportsman O’Brien was a star in whatever sport he played. The 1966 WBFL preliminary final was his final game with East Gambier. He then coached, from memory Kongorong. When he left Mount Gambier in the late 60s he had played in an East Gambier premiership, played WBFL inter-league, won a league media best player award, was among the Barber Shield leading wicket-takers in his two years at Mil Lel, played in a Barber Shield grand final and was a member of Mount Gambier’s Whitty Trophy team but above all was admired and highly regarded by teammates and fans of all codes in which he played. He left a legacy with those who played with and against him in both football and cricket and is still held in the highest regard by those same players today. East Gambier Football Club will hold a reunion in July to honour its 1972 (50 years) and 1982 (40 years) WBFL premierships and the players and officials who were part of those great flag wins. • PHOTO: East G a m b i e r ’s J o c k O’Brien is about to gain possession as he sprints after the ball in a WBFL final against Portland. MATCH REPORTS NORTH GAMBIER V CASTERTON SANDFORD Caroline Wakefield was always going to be an issue for Casterton Sandford when they headed to Vansi art Park and the Tigers shooter proved to be a real headache. Her 18 from 19 in the opening quarter to help set up a 10 goal quarter me lead was ominous but to the Cats' credit they refused to be disheartened and ran goal for goal with the home side in the second quarter, which ended at 12-12. The circle defenders ghtened up, while the pressure through the mid court from Tessa Narra and Scarle Jarrad cut down supply to the Tigers shoo ng combina on and a er giving up 22 a empts in the opening quarter, North was reduced to only 13 shots on goal, while improved accuracy from Cats goalers Madalene Cleary and Charlo e Rice saw the reward on the score board and it was only a 10 goal game at the half. Unfortunately it is hard to sustain that intensity and Wakefield dominated the second half ne ng 30 from 32 as her connec on with Brianna Walters, who fed the ball with precision all game, could not be disrupted. Lauren Norman entered the game for North at the main break and she also teamed well with Wakefield, while at the other end Mel Renko and Zarah Crough-Heaton had a strong third quarter, denying Cleary and Rice me and space and crea ng plenty of turnover ball. The 20-7 third quarter put the result beyond doubt and despite a much be er showing again in the last, the damage had been done and the Tigers recorded a 28 goal win. Defender Caeleigh Humphries and Cleary were the Cats best, while Wakefield and Walters were the pick of the Tigers line-up. SOUTH GAMBIER V WEST GAMBIER South Gambier thudded back to earth at the weekend when West Gambier flexed their muscles in a dominant performance that showed why many rate them as a strong premiership chance in 2022.

The Roos came out firing genera ng plenty of scoring opportuni es as Tara Bryant and Mikaela Horrigan moved the ball quickly and precisely into Sarah Ri er who converted 14 from 18 as the Roos powered to an 11 goal quarter me lead. West defended relentlessly and the Demons were also plagued by unforced turnovers and were it not for Lara Munro and Alyssa Duncan conver ng without a miss, the scoreboard damage may well have been worse. Things se led in the second as South li ed their work rate without the ball and also worked their way through the tough defensive unit of Amy Cram and Jade Ri er with be er pa ence. West s ll had plenty of the ball but improved defensive pressure ensured their accuracy on the feed and the finish was not as good and the turnovers started to come for the Demons. The lead was 15 at the half and in a bid to shake things up, Ruby Richter and Tuly McShane swapped roles, with Richter moving to the a acking wing and McShane to the wing defence role. It did li le to change the complexion of the match, though, with South again struggling to generate scoring opportuni es across the second half, as errors and defensive turnovers con nued to see the ball in Roos hands more o en than not. Ri er con nued to be the target for West and Horrigan and Bryant con nued to run hard and feed with accuracy with Ri er and Lisa McGregor conver ng 20 from 22 in the last to put an exclama on point on the 36 goal victory. The ba le between Bryant and Megan Reid was a highlight of the match as the two young guns worked just as hard defensively as they did in the a acking third, while Richter was also a consistent performer for the Demons. EAST GAMBIER V MILLICENT The grand final rematch at McDonald Park loomed as an intriguing clash as the new look reigning premiers East Gambier hosted the

DENTON’S

to p o f th e tab le Saints. It was a tense, goal for goal opening quarter as perfect shoo ng from Sarah Lock, with 10 from 10 ensuring the Bulldogs were right in the contest and they held a three goal lead at the first change. A er not finding their usual smooth connec on into Tabatha Sanderson, Millicent started to establish their free flowing game with speed on the ball as Paige Nitschke and Lillie Paul, combining for the first me in the mid court, started to work together as a combina on. It saw more supply for the Saints goalers and Sanderson ne ed 12 from 13 as Millicent built a three goal half me lead. Amryn Bosko also worked her way into the contest a er a quiet opening quarter and her nine from 12 ensured the Bulldogs were s ll very much in the game. Bosko and Lock swapped bibs in the third quarter, while Kate Dempsey injected some fresh legs into the mid court at wing a ack but the defensive intensity of the Saints started to take its toll. Hannah Nitschke, Por a McRae, Georgia Clarke and Paul piled the pressure on the feeders and kept the home side to only seven goals for the quarter to extend their lead to eight at the final change. Sanderson was s ll a factor in the last and while Lock and Bosko produced a perfect 14 from 14 between them, they couldn't eat into Millicent's lead and the final scoreline was 5144. Morgan Amy took on the tough task of denying Sanderson the ball and she applied pressure all day and generated some important touches, while Bosko and Lock both had their mes in control of the East shoo ng circle. The hard running, both ways, of Paul through the middle was impressive and gives the Saints plenty of versa lity through their mid court, while Sanderson was again impressive with her accuracy.

ROUND PREVIEWS SOUTH GAMBIER V MILLICENT A er a comprehensive loss to West Gambier things don't get any easier for South Gambier when the Demons host Millicent at the weekend. The young line-up will be looking to get off to a be er start and find some more consistency as they look to challenge the undefeated Saints. Priority one will be denying easy access to star Millicent shooter Tabatha Sanderson. While that direct match up will fall to shooter-turned-defender Grace Edwards, she will need her team mates to do the work out the front to place the feeders under pressure and hopefully force some errors and turnover opportuni es. That means Ellie Bouchier, Ruby Richter and Megan Reid will need to wear their opponents ghtly and try and slow down the usually slick Saints ball movement through Paige Nitschke and Demi Verbena. Lisa Duldig may well be back which only strengthens the Millicent line-up and adds leadership to the court and her ba le with Reid will be one to watch. At the other end, the Demons will need to be safer with ball in hand and find a way through the tenacious Saints defence, while limi ng their errors. Alyssa Duncan and Lara Munro are emerging as a strong shoo ng combina on and they will need to combine smoothly with Reid and Tully McShane to find space against the ght checking of Por a McRae, Hannah Nitschke and Georgia Clarke. It is hard to mount a case for South to upset the ladder leader but they will be looking for a compe ve four quarter performance.

NORTH GAMBIER V EAST GAMBIER North had the be er of the first round clash between these two rivals and it looms as another classic ba le and clearly the match of the round. A er a shaky start to their premiership defence East has started to se le and find some momentum, despite a narrow loss to Millicent at the weekend. The Bulldogs are s ll not only looking to build chemistry with their new look line-up but also sor ng out which combina ons work best. Coming off a good performance against Saints shooter Tabatha Sanderson, East defender Morgan Amy has to take on the tall mber again with the in form Caroline Wakefield and she will be hoping pressure from the likes of her defensive unit team mates Bo Creek and Tyne Bosko will force some poor delivery into the tall shooter, giving her a chance to earn some turnover ball. Emily Hunter and her ba le with quiet achieving North centre Brianna Walters will be a key, with Hunter not just dynamic with her offensive driving but relentless with her defensive pressure. And with Walters and Ashlee Kalantarian both so precise with ball in hand, the Bulldogs will need to deny the two mid courters any easy ball. Sarah Lock and Amryn Bosko started to look more comfortable working together in the round five loss to Millicent and they will need to be at their best as the new look Tigers defensive line of Mel Renko and Zarah Crough-Heaton is star ng to gel as a combina on and working together to create intercept opportuni es.

CASTERTON SANDFORD V WEST GAMBIER The Cats are set to host a rampaging Roos line-up this weekend, with West fresh from a comprehensive defeat of South Gambier. Casterton Sandford will need to focus on a strong start and then look to keep control of the scoreboard so it doesn't get out of control. Of course, that is easier said than done w i t h a We s t l i n e - u p t h a t h a s n o weaknesses. Lisa McGregor and Sarah Ri er are an accurate shoo ng combina on that work well together, Tara Bryant, Zoe Malseed and Mikaela Horrigan are hard running young mid courters, blessed with speed and all crea ve with ball in hand, while defensively Amy Cram and Jade Ri er are coming off a game where they created turnovers at will. For the Cats there have been posi ves for debut coach Jodie Humphries to build upon. The return of Madalene Cleary to the lineup has been a boost for the a ack end and she is also bringing out the best in Charlo e Rice, while at the defensive end, Caeleigh Humphries and Ebany Jarrad never give up easy ball, while Tessa Marra on the defensive wing has helped up the pressure on the opposi on feeders. The second ranked Roos should secure a comfortable win, while the Cats will look to find some consistency and not allow the scoreboard to blow out.

This looms as a goal for goal contest and a much ghter scoreline than the round one clash with East turning the tables on a day where North will officially open their clubrooms.

North Gambier Yellow & Black Under 11's North 0 vs Casterton 17 Well done to all the girls for playing in very cold and wet conditions. We showed more control this week to keep possession and take it down the court. Unfortunately, we were unable to score but we tried hard. We still need to work hard on our leads and passing. Everyone performed well despite cold and wet conditions. We were strong on attack and distributed the ball well. Our defence was solid, and we managed to utilise and score from the turn overs. Best players: Georgia Nulty and Mischa Human Under 13B's North 19 vs Casterton 5 Our girls adjusted well to the cold and wet conditions today. They kept on fighting for every ball. The one area that continues to be a challenge for us is throwing balls away. We make unnecessary and basic mistakes. We tried a different combination with Carey and Ava on GS and GA, considering Lacey will be unavailable from July. It was new but hopefully with consistency and practice we will be able to score more. Overall, a good effort to build on. Under 17's North 39 vs Casterton 38 Casterton were a force to be reckoned with on Saturday, which means the girls had to work hard to secure the win. We were a little slow to start, allowing the Cats to gain the lead at the end of the first quarter. However, our defensive pressure this week was again outstanding, providing us with numerous opportunities to narrow their lead and get in front on the scoreboard. Despite our excellent defensive work, we still struggled to convert our hard-fought turnovers into goals. We will continue to work on creating space, strong leads, and timing so we can ensure a smoother transition into attack. The girls didn't give up though and their persistence paid off with a one goal win. Best players: Alice Tentye and Haylee Brooks C grade North 49 vs Casterton 35 A great win by the girls. A great defensive effort by Bec, Tara and Justine and was finished off with some accurate shooting by Keeley, Georgia and Zarly. Keep working hard at training and as a team and those W's will keep coming. Best players: Justine Forrest and Keeley Quinn B grade North 41 vs 42 It was a tight contest with some great passages of play throughout the court. Our defence played a persistent game creating turnovers against Casterton's target goals shooters. It will push us to come back stronger next week with only losing the lead in the final minutes of the game. Best players: Brianna Fuller and Katie Dyson A res North 62 vs Casterton 50 This week saw a very young side take the court against an experienced Casterton team. It was goal for goal in the first quarter, with very little defensive turnovers. North were able to capitalise on turnovers and edge in front by 3 at half time. Cara Nulty and Lauren Norman played well and shot accurately in the goal circle. North ran away by 12 in the end. Best players: Lauran Norman and Cara Nulty A grade North 69 vs Casterton 41 We were focussed to put out a good performance today, after working on moving the ball quickly and working on our angles on attack. We started well and were able to convert turnovers and were up by a comfortable margin at half time. The Third quarter saw both teams produce some scrappy play, and it was also a messy start the first half of the last quarter. North were too strong in attack and were able to get the win this week. Best players: Libby Morgan-Howe and Caroline Wakefield

A GRADE - East 44 lost to Millicent 51 This was a good game for us. We played well, just need to try eliminating our small errors and work on a stronger finish and more confidence. Really good ball usage and patience around the circle to feed the ball in the right front position for our goalies. Defensive pressure was great. Lots of positives to take from the game and things to work on for next time we meet. A RES – East 43 lost to Millicecnt 55 Although we didn't get a win on the board, we did play some really good minutes of netball. A slow start allowed them to jump on us early, but we were able to adjust quickly and respond well. Some areas of concern from the week before were improved on. Continue to work together and have that confidence in each other. Best Players – Renee Henke (sponsored by Red Swamp Holdings) & Chloe Perryman (sponsored by BP Motorsport) Awards – Renee Henke (Creek Livestock) Chloe Perryman (San Piero) B GRADE – East 25 Los to Millicent 56 Excellent first quarter but unfortunately couldn't sustain that for the other 3. Millicent played a quick controlled game that we tried to replicate, let's play our own game. G re a t d e fe n s i v e p re s s u re a n d passages of plays, but not training showed on the court. Let's re-group and work hard this week, we are better than this. Best Players – Michelle Richardson & Nicola Smith Awards – Nicola Smith (Nourish Nook) Michelle Richardson (Zambrero's) C GRADE – East 34 defeated Millicent 26 A very scattered game with the rain not helping. The attacking end took a while tot settle in but began to get the flow in the 2nd quarter. Defensively it was a tight contest which allowed for multiple intercepts. Was a good win to the top of the table. Well done girls. Best Players –Shannon James & Katie Gaffney (sponsored by Lake City Transport) Awards – Shannon James (Jens Hotel) & Jacinta Clark (San Piero) 17's – East 16 lost to Millicent 53 After a bad 1st quarter, we regrouped to play a much better 2nd half. Our transition and movement were stronger, and this saw our score improve. We must keep working on what we practice at training. Overall, we achieved what we had set for the game. Best Players – Matilda Lamb & Indi Dwyer

East Gambier Red & Black Awards – Indi Dywer (25 Acres) Raine Scott (Bakers Delight) 15A's – East 5 lost to Millicent 51 Going into this round, we knew it was going to be a tough, fast game. With players away, the cold, wet weather and players put in positions they wouldn't normally play, the challenge was even harder. It took a while for us to get our heads in the game, but once we did, there some awesome, positive plays that we could take away from the game. We improved in the last 2 quarters, even though the scoreboard may not have shown it. A huge thank you to our fill ins and thank you to all of you for helping in other grades. Best Players – Lily McIntosh & Tahlia Geraghty Awards – Cedar Scott (OK Pie Shop) Katie Kerr (McDonalds)

15B's – East 19 lost to Millicent 32 A slow start to the game with minimal turnovers had us enter the second quarter down. The girls came together in the second, third and fourth creating space and increasing voice on the court which allowed us to get a bit of momentum and back into the game. A tough week with many away or, playing multiple games so, a big thank you to Jolie, Tahni and Indee for stepping up. This week's loss was not disheartening by any means, I'm incredibly proud of how far the girls have come so far. Best Players – Ellie Chittleborough & Millie Button Awards – Ellie Chittleborough (Fasta Pasta) & Millie Button (Scroll Queen) 13A's – East 2 lost to Millicent 61 Tough game today girls. We have a little bit of work to do, but we can only improve from here. Well done Millicent you all played a great game. Best Players –Indee Stratford & Tahni Kemp Awards – Jolie O'Dea (Boost Juice) Indee Stratford (Wendy's) 13B's – East 12 lost to Millicent 39 Good game today girls. Bit of a slow sta r t , b u t yo u l i ste n e d to o u r instruction's ad kept your heads up. We have a few small things to work on at training this week, but all in all a great effort. Well played Millicent. Best Players – Sailor McCracken & Isana Mee Awards – Sailor McCracken (Kaboom) Ava Hosking (Hungry Jacks) 11's – East 4 Lost to Millicent 29 What a great game today girls. The first of the wet weather for the netball season was at North Gambier on Saturday, with showers throughout the day. JUNIORS: The Under 11’s started the juniors off for the day with a convincing win 17-0. Outstanding play came from Kate & Eliza to keep the North team to a score of nil all game. Makayla, Phoebe, Ylana & Chloe had their skills on display in the Under 13B’s game, to get them the win 19-5.

It was definitely our first taste of real wintery netball last Saturday against South, with lots of rain. Some pleasing results to finish off the first round. Congratulations to Under 15 player Tully Lindner who played her 50th club game.

U11s The little roo girls came away with a great win in terrible weather conditions. Mackenzie and Molly got us off to a great start. Excellent defensive pressure in the mid court from Phoebe and Aggie saw us pounce on any loose balls. Harper, Ruby and Chaneil were very impressive in defence. Miah as always got her hands on plenty of the ball and used her team mates with some great give and go. Jorja played a great game on the wings with some great driving down the court. Mackenna continues to improve. Overall, in the conditions both sides played a great game. West 11-South7 Best players Miah Jackway and Aggie Thomas Game day awards U/13Bs What an amazing win this week, stringing plays together, moving really well and working as a team. Everyone stepped up and put 190% in, in very wet and cold conditions. Trying somewhat new positions or positions that you may think wasn’t right for you, but doing more than enough to show the amazing work you have put in so far this season, and walking away with a massive win. Attacks to defence and everyone in between you were magnificent and well deserve a huge pat on your back for your outstanding work. Well done for Sara for stepping into goals, you worked amazingly, and Isla, brilliant job for having a go in defence. Thanks to Molly for sitting bench, and maybe next week my goal is to remember everyone’s name! West 25-South 2 Best players Eva Povey and Sara Richards Game day awards Eva Povey and Isobel Richards. U/13A Our game at south found us playing in some trying conditions, but the girls pulled through it by playing as a team. We continue to work on minimising our errors, maintaining our focus and court strategy. It was great to see Libby play a tougher game and Lara continue to pass and drive well into the circle. West 50 – South 10 Best players Alice Allen and Lila Pearson Game day awards Libby Buck and Lara Murdoch U/15B This week saw our girls come up against a very focused South team. It was a very wet and winters day and our girls needed to change and adapt their playing style to suit the conditions which they did quite well. A big thanks to Tully Lindner for helping us out again this week. Choosing best players cannot have been an easy task this week with our entire court working hard to keep us in front however Macy Pearsons grit to get turn overs definitely didn't go unnoticed, and Miley Vivian's work in and around our goal ring was amazing. Well done to all the girls. West 35 – South 24 Best players Macy Pearson and Miley Vivian

U/15A Tough weather conditions, with winter setting in with rain most of the game. For most of the game it was a real tight arm wrestle with both teams going goal for goal with West being up at half time, but south winning out by one goal at full time. Great plays from Tully Lindner in centre & Ella Jolley winning most of the passes off the line saw some easy goals with Lucy Simpson and Imogen McGregor working well in the ring together. Defensively it was tight with some great hands and rebounds from Ellie Xanthopoulos and Hayley Cowie. Better luck next time girls. West 34 – South 35

Blue & Red Best players Tully Lindner and Lucy Simpson Game day awards Imogen Mcgregor and Hayley Cowie Under 17’s We had our first wet wintery game for the season at South’s home ground. It was a very tough game for the under 17 girls but they played hard for all 4 quarters. Maddie Milich and Hannah Seidel had a very tough job against a very strong South goalie combination. Both girls worked well and with Stevi Clayton at WD and Charlotte Scott at C put pressure on their attacks. Halle Boult at WA worked the ball well into our goalies, Jordy Hereper and Aleisha Pearson worked hard to get our goals in against some very tall defences. After half time Amity Sheedy came on at WA and Kirra McKenny at WD. Both girls gave us some fresh legs but the game slowly got away from us. We will continue to work hard at training and hold our heads high. West 21 – South 68 Best players Amity Sheedy and Maddie Milich Game day awards Maddie Milich and Stevi Clayton. C Grade A great game today with lots of positives despite the welcome to winter sport with the terrible rain. Our girls displayed some brilliant pressure in the defence positions, locking down the oppositions shooters which was great to see. Attacking flowed a lot better thanks to some drills and skills that were implemented at training. Lots of great work, from our girls and we look forward to next week at Casterton! West 19 – South 43 Best Players: Madelyn Sutherland and Mikaela Campbell Game day awards: Alyssa Campbell and Izabella Pollifrone B Grade This week we were focused on scoring from our centre passes, and unfortunately this proved to be a tough assignment against the strong South defence. With more training and focus, the goal conversions will come. West 14 – South 56 Best players Maddie Milich and Kellie Buck A Reserve The first quarter we started out a little slow with the wet and cold conditions, which saw us coming into our second quarter a few goals down so we knew we had work to do we were goal for goal not making up any ground so we a couple changes to the mid court made all the difference, with everyone working hard we come away with a win.. West 43 – South 37 Best players Claire Hunter and Racheal Langford A Grade Very happy with today's game and the result. We started the game strongly and continued that trend right throughout the match. It was our most consistent game to date which was very pleasing. Once again, our defensive unit created many turnovers which was converted in attack. I thought Zoe had her best game yet getting many clean intercepts and attacking hard all game. Tara was so consistent, creating a wall in defence and feeding with precision. Very proud of Mik for bouncing back from a quiet game last week showing everyone what she is capable of. Keep doing what we are doing and the results we all want will come!! West 68-South 32 Best Players Tara Bryant and Mikaela Horrigan This week we head to Casterton to take on the cats. Fingers crossed for some clearer weather, and some good wins! Go West! Keep your eye on the red and the blue!!
