GAME PREVIEW East Gambier v South Gambier A er three entertaining rounds to kick off the 2021 Bendigo Bank Western Border Football League season, two leading contenders have emerged. Only South and East Gambier remain undefeated and the pair will face off this weekend at McDonald Park in what could be the best clash yet. The home side will make the match of the round an even greater occasion by hos ng a Ladies Day at the “Kennel” where a fundraiser, dinner and auc on is on the schedule. The Bulldogs have also made larger strides on the field as each week has passed. In the opening two rounds the men led by Ma Willson and Jayden Eldridge scraped away with a pair of gri y wins over West and North Gambier. However, East found its best last Saturday night by pu ng away Casterton Sandford easily with many names contribu ng. In his first game back from injury Jake Harrap led from the front by u lising his cra y skills and will be one to watch on the half forward line. Youngster Jessie Plunke has impressed since his debut, while the likes of Jessie Fry, Jayden Eldridge, Mark Rumbelow and Todd Lockwood con nue to give their opponents headaches. Despite an promising beginning, Willson is aware Saturday presents the biggest challenge of the year so far. “South is the most complete side as far as being strong across every line of the ground with outside run, inside toughness and a great forward line,” he said. “They also have a solid defence which did well to keep North under 30 points for an en re game. “It is hard to find a chink in their armor, but we will do our best and will know a bit more about where we are at a erwards.” The Demons are the team on everyone's lips at the moment with a commi ed squad that appears to have very few weaknesses. South showed no nerves on the biggest occasion of the home-and-away season last weekend by thumping reigning premier North Gambier by 94 points. The Anzac Day atmosphere brought the best in
THOMAS MILES - SE VOICE
goal-kicker Kym Eagleson, who kicked his second big bag of the year and is leading a potent forward line which is any defender's worst nightmare. Also in a return campaign for the Demons is Brodie Foster, who can present strong leads, while coach Brayden Kain is inspiring his men on and off the ground. In the midfield South has a number of experienced and younger faces complemen ng the game plan in unique ways with Jack Casey in fierce form a er collec ng the Tony Casadio Medal.
F.L. Unfortunately, the Cats have been blown away on both road trips, but can take heart from their only home game with Millicent. The rivals have also suffered their fair share of misfortune, so it could be a war of a ri on with the last to blink taking home a much-needed victory. Millicent v North Gambier Millicent and North Gambier take centre stage under the Saturday night lights of McLaughlin Park which shapes up to be an intriguing spectacle.
The Demons are experts at nailing the basics and can leave teams behind with their free-flowing style. Kain believes the Bulldogs ba le will be the defining game of the season so far. “The way it set up at the minute we are two top dogs ba ling it out, so it is going to be a good test to see where we are at,” he said. “East has played very well, but we will just focus on what we can control and if we do all of those things right again hopefully it will be enough to get us over the line.”
The Saints have many reasons to believe they can topple the reigning premiers for the first me since 2018. Mostly because the club is star ng to make winning a habit since breaking a 952-day drought two weeks ago, but also one man, Gene Robinson. The hyped forward is enjoying a purple patch of form a er reaching double figures in the goals column in consecu ve weeks.
The two sides played out a ght arm wrestle in the Limestone Coast Super League last year where South came from behind to triumph by two straight kicks. Expect neither side to hold back a punch in the unmissable ba le for an undisputed stranglehold on the top of the ladder.
Led by strong leaders Clint Gallio, Jacob Carger and Tom Renzi, Millicent's midfield has done a lot of heavy li ing to give its main man plenty of opportuni es to inflict pain on the scoreboard. However, the Tigers also posses plenty of firepower inside 50 and are hungry to make a statement.
West Gambier v Casterton Sandford At the very same me on Saturday a ernoon, a bo om of the ladder bout will also take place at Malseed Park between West Gambier and Casterton Sandford.
The side is hur ng a er suffering its first Anzac Day defeat for five years in embarrassing fashion and is desperate to prove it was just a small lapse a er an otherwise solid start to the season. In the forward line Sam Stafford has shone in all three appearances, while coach Jus n McConnell bagged eight goals in his last clash with the Saints. Expert another close encounter to conclude a thrilling round.
It is an understatement to say it is a must-win game for both sides a er the pair featured prominently in the latest WBFL finals series, but did not play last year and went through a restructure. The Roos start as slight favourites enjoying the h o m e - g ro u n d a d va n ta g e , p l u s a m o re encouraging start to the season. The side coached by Steven Wenman has challenged East, South and Millicent, but struggled to deliver in the key moments.

MATCH OF ROUND 3 V WHERE YOU
MILLICENT
West Gambier Blue & Red First home game was good with the unveiling of the new footy oval at the back. Been along me since we have kicked the ball around out the back oval. The main reason for the oval is to let the kids the play and enjoy which they all did by the smiles on their faces. All the Under 12s had a great hit out and enjoyed the day. Our 14s kicked us off with a good solid effort, against a very well drilled Millicent team. The boys stated well but fell away in the last kept working hard and registered on the scoreboard in the last and kept South goalless in the 3rd Quarter. Our best players Brodie Szopory, Koby Stratman, Tate Hammond, Kane Gilbert, Bailey Noble with some great marking. The 16s started of slow in the first Quarter, with solid 2nd and 3rd Quarters to finish get our noses in front. It was great last quarter off footy from both sides. Well held on to get the win in a great game. Best Players Joel Day, Nate Davey, Charlie Carson, Talon Johnson, Brooklyn Winterfield and Harry Opperman. The boys will look at con nuing the good form and play Casterton this week. Again limited numbers in the 18s with a lot of boys away, injuries and some playing A grade, makes for a tough job against the best. But the boys with the support off the under 16s put on a great effort and fought it out to the end. The scoreboard does not reflect some of the great work they done with heavy legs and skill errors hur ng in the last hurdle. With a week off we look at rebounding into next year. Nathan Lewis has his first win on the board with a very close game. With a great solid contest the boys had a crack and got the win done. The game was tough, hard and fair with a Young fella in Alex Jarnevic ge ng best player followed
V
by Arron Heron winning his first game in over 100 matches. Brodie (kick it in to the man on the mark) Parsons was third a er given Lewie a fright. Dale Robbins and Jordan Aston round out the best players. Congrats to Dale Robbins on playing his 100th game this week a great achievement along side the coach Nathan Lewis who is also playing his 100th for West. Good luck boys.
The A grade ran out full off confidence and hit a solid Millicent team. What is best described as a poor first quarter followed by an good second kicking 3 goals 5 for the quarter. Coming out of the sheds seems to be an issue as again we had a poor third quarter which just leaves to much to do in the last. Our best player was Tom Holmes who fought hard all game and never stopped and kept trying followed by Jordan Coombe who kept presen ng and giving us a op on forward. Ethan Giddings was third best who never stopped trying and pu ng and put together a couple of g re at s m o t h e rs i n a s h o w o f h i s despera on. It was great to see everyone the club up and running Saturday night with the shuffle night a success, for some. Looking forward to having Casterton/ Sandford at home this week and have another great weekend off football.
Casterton-Sandford Blue, White & Red
Wasn't much joy for the Ca ers on the scoreboard last week at East Gambier but the Doggies put on a good feed and cool refreshments, excellent hosts for the supporters.
The Senior Cats again ran the game out well with a much improved second half but had let the Bulldogs get to far in front. El Presidente Dylan Ayton kicked two goals and was named B.O.G. Jackson Gibbs was also named in the best a er a solid performance along with Ma Killey, Diarmid Cleary. Sam Broomby and Jimmy Boulton. The Reserves had a crack, but with a few regulars missing, couldn't match their more experienced opponents on the scoreboard. Wilba Rowland was our leading goal scorer and the be er players included Jus n Beecher, Jarvis Parsons, Jackson Fitzgerald and James Killey. On the Sunday the Casterton-Sandford
players and supporters a ended the area ANZAC day services, with a par cular good showing at the Digby Dawn Service, great to see both young and old taking the me to honour our brave servicemen and women. This week we travel over the Border to Malseed Park to play the Roos, the Wes es always put on a pre y good show and I'm sure that Fridge will have some choice cuts of meat ready for the BBQ. Neither clubs seniors have had a win yet so expect a cracking game, our junior teams have been pushing hard so don't be having a lie in, get to the ground early and watch the li le Cats strut their stuff. Carn the Cats! Thank-you to all our valued sponsors including Nutrien Ag Solu ons, Taylor Motors, Glenelg Inn, Bendigo Bank, Aston Newman Timbers, Casterton Secondary College and Foodworks.

With the weather looking at finally showing some sun we are stocked up in the bars and ready for the onslaught of red and white army. I also get excited on this day as it's a me how royal family of footy can see how the pheasants are travelling at the kennel.
Footy results from last week all went our way and I would like to thank the card for taking part in the twilight game at the kennel. President club day next Saturday so book your table in for the Millicent game and let your hair down if you have any and have a beer or wine on the club. Thank you again for all the trainers, volunteers and officials that run our club each week. It just would not happen without your help.
Looking forward to a huge block buster A grade top of the table clash. And I just hope our back line can contain 50cent, puff daddy 2Pac, and Kanye in the red and white forward line. (Just remember boyz the pink stretched hummer might not fit through our gate)
In closing I would like to thank Stra y for organising solar for the club. This project has taken a while but it's great to see it finally finished. And yes Mr Glynn we are happy to run a extension cord to your new score board if you think of upgrading from the 1960s look . Go dogs
Hello ladies and gentlemen and welcome to Round 4 at the kennel. Today we host the mighty South Gambier demons.
A massive big shout out to our coach Jayden Eldridge for organising the pink jumpers for today's clash. With Kelly Salevic's help they are pu ng on a ladies day in the club. Some jumpers will be auc oned a er the game and money is going to be donated from this event to cancer groups. Also another huge shout to Kane R a n s o m fo r o rga n i s i n g t h e jumpers and a big thank you to a bloke from the Jens hotel for dona ng the B and A grade jumpers for today's game.

It is always an honour for our club to compete on Anzac Day with North Gambier. The sacrifice made by our service men and women in mes of war is not lost on any of us, we are hugely respec ul and grateful. Many thanks to Kevin Douglas, Robyn Bowd, the RSL, service people and others who helped make the day a great success.
Red & White with one of his best games, Shannon Megaw and Ethan Chuck were terrific. Josh Smith kicked 5.
The big test for both teams is this week at the kennel versus the equally undefeated East Gambier. We like the way the Doggies go about it, they play hard on the ground and support the league with their a endance and spending off the ground so we It has been 4-5 years since we’ve look forward to enjoying their beaten North on Anzac Day in the hospitality and having a great seniors and easily double that for tussle. the reserves so it was great to see both teams record handsome Coach Mud (this week’s birthday wins and play good team-based boy) has the U18s purring with an footy. The seniors were never in 84 point win. Great to see Ethan doubt with their most complete Habets as our best player, his performance. Jack Casey was a aggression and straight ahead monolith (and a talented one at a ack is what we need. In the reserves the old blokes in Luke Foran and Brent Howard con nue to show the young blokes how to go about it. It’s fantas c to have such great players and club people giving back to the team. Millicent Red, Black & White Is cereal a soup? This is one of those ques ons that at first sounds ridiculous and then makes me scratch my head and wonder. Hmm. Or is it actually a salad, and Milk is the dressing? Is a hotdog actually a sandwich? Is sustaining an injury a er a few sherbets at the footy club classed as a football injury or just plain stupidity? These big ques ons could be debated for hours but one that remains pre y cut and dried is the man caught skipping work for 15 years and s ll ge ng paid. If it wasn't for it being an Italian man, I already had in mind who I thought it was. There are a few candidates that jumped to mind. Dave Willis at Millicent Toyota, part of the furniture he's been there that long, some employees think he's a statue. Then there is Dougy at KCA, some say he's a qualified electrician, but if powering things off at the PowerPoint doesn't fix it, he scratches his head more than working out if cereal is soup!! And then the great man Roo Shanks walks around like he's busy but rarely seen out of his office. Roos favourite saying "is I like work; it fascinates me. I can sit and look at it for hours.” I've been asked about Tank, is he an employee at Beaurepaires or Andy's bakery he's spo ed there that o en, at the least he must have shares?? One bloke that didn't skip his Job on the weekend was The Gene Machine, kicking 10 goals in a best on ground display. Was a hard-earned win in trying condi ons but the A grade boys got the job done skipping out to a winning lead early in the 3rd before West come back strong in the last but to Millicent’s credit, they fought it out to the end. Once again with the young guys playing really well. Frazer Bradley was superb at centre half back, Sam Gray rarely loses a one-on-one ba le, Billy Shanks gets his work

ethic from Uncle John and showed class and poise beyond his years. Noah Lang son of midget boxer Doug Lang won plenty of the pill and uses it well. Young Jaxon Cushion in his first game of Senior footy didn't look out of place. Clint o en harassed and held, found plenty of the footy, working both ways and bringing others into the game and Cargs showed off his footy brain with pin point passing rarely was ng the footy and opening up quick avenues to goals.
Millicent Reserves had a close encounter in an even contest all day down by 2 points at the final siren. Thanks to the 3 under 18s who stepped up this week. All contribu ng well and played beyond their years. Tizza kicked 3 goals Nick Joy kicking 2 and singles to Hazza and Robbie. Best players were Nat, Joey, Hazza, Tinka and Tizza U18s had a solid win with Wormy, Cush, Ty all high in the best and Jack O, Deegan and Shanksy cracking in as well! An under-manned 16s just missed out but ba led hard all day and the lads can hold their heads up a er this one, Sam Hunt, Gibbsy, Blake and big men Toddy and Harry Mules all featured in the best players. Our 14s played blinding team footy to record a big win and Thwaitesy earned BOG honours followed closely by Kobe, Charlie D, Je , Dylan and Sam Gronn. Home night game against North this week, hoping for good weather and a big crowd. Marking my spot, The Appren ce

Tough day at Blue Lake Sports Park last week. The Southies are certainly up and about!
se ng up teammates with good skills when he has the ball.
Unfortunately, a er the Anzac Day ceremonies, we got a lesson in the A Grade from the early season premiership favourites, with our best players being Nick McInerney, Brad Stafford, Jordan Holli , Sam Stafford, Jake Schutz and Hamish Telford. Memorable moments included a special goal from Joel Griffiths and Jay Turner marking a er running with the flight of the ball.
As the season progresses and this team trains and plays together more, I am confident we will see a fair amount of improvement, as we haven’t yet had our strongest team on the ground and we have had a number players just recently join the group at the conclusion of the Women’s season. Thanks must also go to the 3 or 4 under 12’s who have been coming up to play each week, they certainly haven’t looked out of place. We look forward to rest of the season and the team is excited to develop and play good footy for the remainder of the year.
The reserves did not fare much be er than the seniors, with best players being a mix of the old and young, in Seth McRae, Ciaran Buckley, Alex Stafford and Ma Hensel. With nearly all the under 18s having already played a game, they ran out of steam in their late game. Best players were Henry Gould, Jack O’Connor, Brodie Allen, Seth McRae, Brody Allison and Zayne Young. Fair to say the under 16s didn’t have much go their way and with more scoring shots, they were very unlucky to go down by 6 points. Best players were Seb Doody, Angus Allen, Deacon Illsely, Darcy Arthurson and Reece McLaughlin. The under 14’s con nued their impressive start to the season with a good win against South on Saturday. Coach Turner reports that despite missing a number of players and welcoming several new faces to the team over the last 2 weeks, the group is working well together and we are seeing some very pleasing improvement from a number of the kids. If the core of this group s cks together and joins other talented juniors in higher grades at the club, the not too distant future is looking posi ve for North. Best on ground from the weekend and one of the biggest improvers over the course of the season so far was Ben Braithwaite. A acking from CHB, Ben drove the ball forward on countless occasions and was also handy in the ruck when changing on the ball. Second best was Aaron Dally, who kicked 5 goals from full forward and as always showed plenty of class. Third best was Iowani Colemen, who was yet again dominant in the ruck and around the ground and is showing more confidence and leadership each game. Fourth best was Kade Allen, who had plenty of the ball and as always was hard at the ball and opposi on and con nues to show he has a very bright future in football. Fi h best was Zac Cordell who’s a ack on the ball is as good as anyone in the under 14 compe on and is someone who his team mates are glad to have on their team. Sixth best was Cooper Turner who con nues his good season with plenty of hard work when he doesn’t have the ball and
The 12s are doing great things and developing quickly. We will have some of their coaches reports in following weeks. Some of our junior girls, in Eadie Mustart, Erykah Van Gaans, Yenna Joyce, Jasmyn Plew-Jones, Penny Coleman and Kirra Schultz were selected to a end the SANFL's Talent ID and Diversity High Performance Program held in Adelaide last week. Eadie, Erykah and Yenna a ended and from reports, impressed. Well done girls. This week finds us at Millicent, mixing up the order of games and mes, with the A Grade kicking off at 5.30pm. Everyone gets to enjoy a sleep in, which will help pushing through to the end of the A Grade. Given the late finish, the club will not open Saturday night, so make sure you are all ready to a end the first official social func on next week, The Championships North Open. Dust off your tennis gear and see further details on the club facebook page. Club memberships are now due. We have kept the amount at $40 and for that you’ll get a stubby holder and s cker, so no excuses and let’s see if we can break last years membership record. Payment can be made at club, via Team App or by simply seeing Andrew or Mardi Whan. Thanks to our major sponsors, Stuckey Eleictrical Contractors and KFC. Go gers.

North Gambier U/12 A’s The North Gambier under 12a Football team's mo o is RESPECT, OPPONENTS, OFFICIALS, EACH OTHER. As the most senior under 12 side at the club we endeavour to set a high standard for other teams to follow. Players are rotated through all posi ons and encouraged to have a growth mindset, take on all challenges and to not fear mistakes because mistakes are where all the learning is. With such a focus on development i'm finding enthusiasum and the willingness to learn is at a high level no ma er what the score board says.

On Saturday we played South Gambier and went into the game with 13 under 12a players, 2 under 12b players and 2 players from South's side. WITH Despite playing a starring role for East Gambier in the nough es and two decades of trying, the stars never aligned for Kelvin Cook to taste premiership success.
crunched in a contest halfway through the game, but he played un l the end with a broken arm and was out for about 12 weeks a er that.”
However, Cook s ll enjoyed plenty of special days on the football field and is a well-known figure around the Western Border community. He remains heavily involved in the sport coaching and umpiring juniors as his own kids start their football journeys.
Shortly a er his seniors debut, Cook was on the hunt for a job and found himself jumping across Bass Strait to Mount Gambier and said he did not have to search to far to find a new club. “I didn't have to look to hard for a footy club because I had family at East and my dad's uncle and aunty were life members,” Cook said. “I lived with them for a bit and thought it was the right thing to do. “I flew into Mount Gambier on the Tuesday, had a mee ng with the club on Wednesday, trained Thursday and played Saturday.”
Cook's career actually kicked off almost 1000km away at the South Launceston Football Club. By the age of 17, the fresh-faced youngster was starstruck making his A Grade debut under the guidance of Hawthorn premiership player Peter Curran and said senior footy was a bap sm of fire. “My first impression was I am probably too young for it because of all the big bodies,” Cook said. “But there were some handy players that had VFL experience and older guys who would look a er you, so it was cool to play against decent opposi on at a young age.” Being a Hawks supporter, Cook said it was special to learn so much from the 1985 and 89 VFL premiership player, who gave him an idea of how tough some players are. “Peter was the playing coach in his 40's and he always wore a long sleeve,” Cook said. “I remember one game when he got absolutely
COOK the Bulldogs and played a key role in two grand final making sides. But unfortunately he could not lead the club all the way to a drought-breaking triumph. “It was a great honour to captain and we had some really good teams, but just couldn't get over the line,” Cook said. “In 2006 we played Portland in the grand final and they were the best team by far all year and it didn't ma er who played them. “We then had another go in 2009 against South, but we gave them an eight-goal head start which never ends well. “I am not sure why, but history was against us, so that is why it was really good to see the boys win the 2017 premiership.”
A er being parachuted into the A Grade at McDonald Park in a ma er of days, Cook se led into the forward line of a struggling team in 1998. But the arrival of the late Phil Muhovics as coach and a handful of new recruits brought the Bulldogs charging up the ladder and in conten on.
A er the 2009 defeat, Cook wanted to discover what football was like outside of Mount Gambier and switched to Kybybolite in the Kowree Naracoorte Ta ara Football League and played alongside Carberry.
He said the style of football was “a li le bit different” to Tasmania and formed a strong bond with his comrades Sco Carberry, Ryan Larcombe and Ma hew Ellis inside the forward 50.
By this me, he became a defender and thoroughly enjoyed his me at centre half back. Sadly his grand final woes con nued despite the Tigers losing just one home and away game in his first season.
During the summer of 2000, Cook travelled through the desert to play in the Darwin Football League and said it was a significant moment in the development of his career. “A mate and I played a season up in Darwin and that was one of the best things I ever did,” he said. “I met a heap of good guys from all over the country and played against a really good standard. “A er I came back, I probably played some of my best footy.” Just one year later Cook was presented with the chance to represent some SANFL clubs and said he was close to taking on the challenge. “A er I won the league goal kicking, Glenelg and West Adelaide came knocking,” he said. “I actually signed for Glenelg to play some Reserves footy halfway through the 2001 season, but I did not end up going because I had a few niggling injuries and did not want to leave for the sake of it.” Cook's decision to stay in the South East paid off as he became captain of
A er three years Cook called me on his A Grade career, but returned to the “Kennel” for a swansong in the reserves alongside some mates. A er hanging up the boots for good, he thought it was me to relax, but found himself pulling the East guernsey on one more me. “One of my good mates was coaching the B Grade a couple of years a er I re red and it was his 200th game in Casterton,” Cook said. “When I jumped in the car with him and a couple of others, they asked 'where are my boots because you are playing' and I thought no I am not. “But by the me we got to Casterton they had to organise boots, shorts and everything within 30 minutes and I was playing. “It was good fun kicking a couple of goals, but I could not walk for a couple of days a erwards.” Cook wished he could witness Metallica and Michael Jordan's first NBA championship live, while his favourite spor ng memories were a ending the 2013 and 14 AFL grand finals where his Hawks li ed the premiership cup.

MATCH REPORTS WEST GAMBIER V MILLICENT Hard to imagine there has been a more compe ve, more a rac ve opening quarter of netball in the first three rounds as West Gambier and Millicent went toe to toe in a quality 15 minutes that saw the scores ed at 19 apiece at the first break. Both sides welcomed back key players – West with Tara Bryant playing her first game due to State basketball commitments and Nikeisha Facey returned from being sidelined in round two due to illness, while Lisa Duldig showed no ill effects from the calf injury sustained in round one to be back on court for the Saints. The free flowing opening quarter clearly saw a focus on defensive pressure from both teams and scoring became a li le less easy in the second as Millicent created just enough turnover ball to work its way to a seven goal half me lead. Hannah Nitschke and Kimmi Tincknell started to close down space, especially for Sarah Ri er who had dominated the opening quarter scoring, while the move of Duldig to wing defence and Lucy Denton to centre also helped the Saints' cause as Duldig shut down the drive to the circle for the West mid court and created a few cri cal turnover opportuni es. Fortunately for the Roos, Facey and Amy Cram were also ge ng some cri cal touches to keep the home side in touch. The start of the third quarter was when the scoreboard damage was done as Millicent went on a scoring spree, while keeping West scoreless, and the seven goal lead was quickly double figures. Paige Nitschke started to find the circle's edge, Denton was also star ng to deliver some quality ball while Tabatha Sanderson also started to loom large as the young mid court and experienced goaler Demi Verbena started to generate the speed of ball expected of the Saints when in full flight. The lead was 13 by the final chance and 16 at the final whistle as West again rallied through the defensive pressure of Cram, Facey and Jade Ri er. Lisa McGregor put in her usual work rate, while Ri er finished accurately to ensure every opportunity counted for her team and when Carlee Ransom was able to conjure a strong drive she hit the circle hard and fed the ball with accuracy. Both teams would have walked away with valuable lessons learned – Millicent realised it can fight hard when locked in a goal for goal contest despite having no Donna Denton or Hayley Dunn and West Gambier had their pre-season hopes confirmed – when they have their full side they are a compe ve
unit that will only improve as they develop team chemistry. SOUTH GAMBIER V NORTH GAMBIER A er a strong performance against West Gambier, South Gambier was looking to put in a strong ANZAC Day showing against North Gambier and the first quarter was the goal for goal contest the crowd had come to see. Imogen Walker was domina ng the a ack end for the Demons with her strong takes and accurate finishing, while pa ence was the name of the game for the Tigers as Ellen Brown, Brianna Walters and Alycia Close moved the ball carefully to find gun shooter Caroline Davey in space. Some late turnover efforts from Maddie Whaites and Mel Renko saw North sneak out to a three goal quarter me lead. In a bid to quell the influence of Walker, Renko moved to goal defence and in tandem with Whaites, it suddenly seemed a lot tougher to get the ball into the Walker-Lara Munro shoo ng combina on and that also affected some of the shoo ng accuracy, while North started to move the ball more seamlessly through court to find Davey. The other X factor in the Tigers taking control was the work of Brianna Walters, who not surprisingly walked away with the Shirley Underwood Medal. Walters not only used her pace to great effect but also hunted down some important loose balls and every me she had ball in hand she found a team mate. The margin blew out to double figures by the main break and while the injec on of Grace Edwards into the game caused the North defenders some headaches as her height became a factor under the post, the Demons made too many errors as Whaites, Renko and Walters con nued to create turnover ball which was scored with great frequency by North.
club thus far. But in the end, the class and experience of the Tigers won the day by 25 goals with Shirley Underwood Medallist Walters and Renko having the most influence on the contest, with Whaites and Davey also having a big say in the final result. EAST GAMBIER V CASTERTON SANDFORD East Gambier con nues to flex its muscles, cemen ng its top ranking in the A Grade compe on with a comprehensive victory over an inexperienced Casterton Sandford line-up. The Cats welcomed back Scarle Jarrad and she gave some serious bite to the mid court, driving hard and providing leadership for her younger team mates against the star studded Bulldogs. Rising star Chelsey Galpin also made a guest appearance for Casterton Sandford, playing in goals and on the a acking wing, with Charlo e Rice joining the game at quarter me and playing alongside the in form Tori Broomby in goals, who was again the Cats' best. As they have in the Bulldogs got off to a Bosko and Tenille opportuni es which accuracy.

At the other end of the court, Lisa Fyfe and Bo Creek were denying space and me to the Cats, turning the ball over regularly. Kate Dempsey entered the clash for the final quarter and will earn a star ng gig this weekend, with regular wing a ack Tarsh McCallum away for work.
Walker also exited the clash, giving the Demons a chance to work on combina ons without the rarely available university student, and the sister act of Zoe and Alyssa Duncan had to work over me to find the circle's edge and deliver the ball to Munro and Edwards. Give the frequency with which the ball kept entering the Tigers' a acking goal third, the defensive combina on of Brandi Bouchier and Renee Pluckhahn ba led manfully so o en coming close to forcing a held ball and making Close and Davey earn every scoring opportunity. ROUND 4 PREVIEWS MILLICENT V NORTH GAMBIER Clearly the match of the round as the Tigers travel to McLaughin Park to take on the reigning premiers. North would be hoping u lity Noni McConnell recovers from a calf strain that had her sidelined on ANZAC Day a er injuring it in the round two warm up so they can put a full strength line-up out on court. For Millicent it is another week of looking to stop supply to a tall shooter as Hannah Nitschke again looks to use her smarts and athle cism and the support down court of her team mates to combat Davey, who is a scoring machine for the Tigers. Kimmi Tincknell will look to find the balance between close checking on Alycia Close while also providing some help defence to Nitschke and Lisa Duldig will be looking to replicate her efforts in round three by piling pressure on the Tigers’ feeders. The ba le in the middle between Lucy Denton and Brianna Walters will be fascina ng. Both players can run all day and like to impact the contest at both ends of the court and both are the key feeders for their respec ve sides. To take on the shoo ng combina on of Tabatha Sanderson and Demi Verbena, North will no doubt look to Maddie Whaites and Mel Renko to provide a similarly smothering performance as they did on ANZAC Day and coach Karen Gould also has Jessie Li le and McConnell to take a defensive role if she wants Renko back in the mid court. The Saints also have op ons with Paige Nitschke decep vely influen al at wing a ack but also able to head into the shoo ng circle and Denton could also fill a shoo ng role, while Millicent has already blooded a ra of young talent that can step on court if required. Much like Millicent’s round three contest, the weekend looms as a ght affair with the Saints jst ge ng the edge when it counts. EAST GAMBIER V SOUTH GAMBIER The Bulldogs might be without star mid courter Tarsh McCallum this weekend but with Kate Dempsey ready to move seamlessly into the role – a role she played in the 2019 finals campaign for East – it is hard to see how South will be able to challenge the imperious East line-up.
Amryn Bosko and Tenille Gray have been unstoppable in goals, while at the other end Bo Creek and Lisa Fyfe con nue to s fle opposi on teams and with the help of Tyne Bosko and Emily H u n t e r, c o n n u e t o l i m i t t h e s c o r i n g opportuni es for all opposi on. Hunter is a dominant mid courter and is coming off a stellar round three performance, while Dempsey is hard working and reliable. And while the East line-up is as se led as any in the compe on, South, rivalled only by Casterton Sandford, is the least se led as coach Belinda Scanlon looks to blood young talent and inject experience from the club’s departed university students. The form of Lara Munro in goals has been a posi ve of the tough start to 2021, while the height of Grace Edwards has given the Demons a target. Alyssa Duncan con nues to work into her role at wing a ack and delivers the ball with accuracy, while Hannah Witherow is a hard running mid courter who never gives up and defensively Brandi Bouchier and Renee Pluckhahn are forming a good understanding and while they will not have to tackle another tall holding goaler, they have the unenviable task of restric ng the scoring opportuni es of the most prolific scoring shoo ng combina on of the first three rounds.
Scarle Jarrad also looms large through the mid court given her ability to influence a contest as an a acker and as a ght checking defender, while Caeleigh Humphries, who is a rising star of the compe on will face another huge challenge when she takes on Lisa McGregor, hot on the heels of her ba le with Tenille Gray, but the young defender would have already taken some lessons from that encounter and will certainly make McGregor earn every possession. Ongoing injury concerns for Meg Fennell have not made life easy for the Cats as the star defender turned mid courter has had to ba le those issues but she has been cri cal as an on court leader and the Cats will be hopeful she can exert her influence again. Carlee Ransom and Tara Bryant will be be er for the run together last weekend and the Cats will need to try and deny them easy access to the goal circle if they don’t want shooter Sarah Ri er to dominate, with the 17 & Under State squad member not just looking to take shots from under the post but happy to tackle the long range a empts as well. West should rack up win number two for the season, while the learning curve for the inexperienced Cats con nues.
There is no case that can be mounted for the Demons to conjure an upset but it will be a great learning curve for the inexperienced line-up to take on the compe on benchmark and look to develop and improve their own games. CASTERTON SANDFORD V WEST GAMBIER The Cats will host the Roos at the weekend and w i l l b e l o o k i n g to p u t i n a n i m p rove d performance a er experiencing what East is pu ng out in season 2021. West might be coming off a loss but they gained some confidence from having their preferred line-up and the challenge they posed to the reigning premiers. The defensive duo of Amy Cram and Jade Ri er con nue to gel as a combina on and they will need to work together again as experienced campaigner Tori Broomby looks to marshall the troops in the a acking goal third to try and ensure the Cats make the most of every scoring opportunity.

East Gambier Red & Black A Grade - East 95 defeated Casterton 12 Best Players - Tenille Gray & Emily Hunter Awards Winners - (Creek Livestock) Tenille Gray (Beau e Studio) Emily Hunter (South Eastern) Lisa Fyfe Saturday we faced Casterton/Sandford at our home grounds and finished with a convincing win. The defensive combina on of Bo Creek, Lisa Fyfe and Tyne Bosko got the team off to a great start with strong defensive efforts, turning the ball over to allow us to get out in front early. Transi on down the court flowed nicely in the hands of Tarsh McCallum and Emily Hunter feeding it into the goalies. The Goalie combina on between Tenille and Amryn was outstanding shoo ng 95 goals between the two of them. Tenille was awarded first best for the game. Shout out to a talented east junior, Kate Dempsey who took to the court in the last quarter in A-grade and fi ed in perfectly. With a couple new players welcomed to the East Gambier family they have fit in and adapted very well to playing with the A reserve crew. South Gambier Red & White
A big day for our 11 & Under girls with a tough 11-8 win - the first of the season and for many the first of their careers!!!
We have 15 girls in our squad and 12 were there on Saturday to enjoy the win - all 12 girls playing their part... Elsie had a great game, having a real impact in the second half at goal keeper; Maya was a cri cal link player at goal a ack; Mackenzie was a tough as always, playing on both wings, with her passing a highlight; Paegan ran hard in centre and did some great work defensively; Holly also sued her height to get some cri cal touches; Ellie showed her defensive skills with some fantas c intercep ons and rebounds, while Lucy Dening had an impact at both ends of the court and shot some wonderful goals; Lily formed a great goaling combina on with Lucy Dening and also rebounded and finished well; while Ruby made some great space at wing a ack and worked really hard to win the ball back; Courtney was as smart as always and made good decisions with ball in hand; while Zara defended hard and drove down the court to be important in our transi on into a ack. And while a 6-29 loss might not seem like cause for celebra on, for the 13 & Under B team the improvement the girls showed was amazing. Defensively they stuck to the task despite being outsized and made life as hard as they could for their North opponents; while their transi on play was impressive as they found good space, led to the ball at
every opportunity and made great decisions with ball in hand. Scarlet shone in goals; Zara had her best game for 2021; Lily and Tegan worked hard through the mid court; Sophie and Aaliyah shared wing defence du es and both got important touches, while Halle showed her defensive prowess with some great intercep ons and Kadie ba led hard against a super tall opponent and stuck to the task and won back the ball with her tenacity. The A and A Reserve had a tough ANZAC Day with club captain Renee having her best game since joining the Demons in the A Grade. The 17 & Under, B and C Grade had another good weekend on court with Bella Morale in stellar form and her defensive combina on with Misty was cri cal in the C Grade win, while the B Grade con nue to get stuck in tough first half tussles before pulling away from opponents. A shout out to Jaymee O'Neil who turned 30 this week and is as consistent and important to the B Grade team as she has ever been - captaining the side in 2021. The 13 & Under A and 15 & Under A had tough encounters against opponents who are rated highly in the premiership race but showed some great determina on and work ethic, while the 15 & Under B had a ght narrow loss and con nue to improve.

A grade - North 65 South 40 A very compe ve start by both sides saw a small margin in favour of North. A few posi onal changes by both teams allowed North to se le and begin to play with some freedom. South were extremely compe ve and with me will be solid young developing side. Brianna Walters was a key player in a ack and defence, ge ng hands onto balls or taking vital intercepts. She was punishing in her deliveries into the goal circle with just her first game under her belt, she will be someone to watch. We congratulate Brianna on winning the very respec ul and special Anzac Day Shirley Underwood Medal also. Mel Renko was thrown into GD and took the opportunity to show her leadership and class. Maddie Whaites found her feet and worked beau fully with Mel to put pressure onto the circler feeders. Alycia Close held her ground and although quiet, she was punishing to South in her delivery to Caroline Davey. Best players: Brianna Walters and Mel Renko
A res - North 83 South 37 North started the game of with a quick succession of turnovers and goals. North’s midcourt moved the ball fluently down into their a acking end with precision and this resulted in a high scoring quarter for North.
